Super fast SPI speedup for RP2040 displays
We re-spun our STEMMA Friend design from a SAMD21 to an RP2040 to take advantage of the more-powerful chip, to make it CircuitPython-friendlier and faster at doing stuff like I2C sniffing. While porting over the Arduino code (which pretty much works just fine) we noticed the display is a little sluggish due to SPI data being sent over one byte at a time with a delay. Testing Arduino Nano RP2040 Connect with CircuitPython I2C
Liz submitted a PR to add support for the Nano RP2040 to CircuitPython and we thought to try it out! So far so good, the digital pins all toggle right and we were able to see the built in LSM6DSOX chip on the I2C port. We have a driver for this IMU so hey, why not wire up a quick demo? We have an external OLED wired up on the same I2C bus, reading acceleration/gyro data and displaying it just fine. Timelapse Build of RP2040 QT Trinkey Prototypes
After dinner we like to unwind with a tall glass of .. solder paste? sure why not! let's put together two quick prototype boards of a Trinkey that uses an RP2040 chip and fits in the same size and shape as our standard-issue QT sensor breakouts (1" x 0.7"). After stenciling on some paste we hand-place all the components. Then they get reflowed on our cute lil mini reflow plate. During reflow sometimes we have to poke at some parts to get them to sit flat. Glider App demo test
Glider is a new app we're working on that will allow folks to program a CircuitPython board anywhere, with a mobile device like a phone or tablet (it will also work on desktops, but we sorta recommend USB ports if you have em) Glider sends and receives files over BLE using a simple protocol we've developed that is simpler and easier to implement than BLE's object-transfer-protocol. One of the nifty things about interpreted languages is that we can run new code by sending text files, no compilers needed - so this should work very nicely. Right now we're just doing protocol testing, here's us sending and receiving files. BLE can be very fast, thanks to some tricks we've learned from when we developed our Bluefruit Connect & Circuit Playground apps. EYE ON NPI - FT23XHPQ High-Speed USB Bridge with Type-C/PD3.0 Controller
This week's EYE ON NPI is from long-time Maker-buddies FTDI Chip (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/f/ftdi/ft233hpq-usb-bridge): The FT233HP (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/ftdi-future-technology-devices-international-ltd/FT232HPQ-REEL/13981010) and FT232HP (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/ftdi-future-technology-devices-international-ltd/FT233HPQ-TRAY/13981013) builds on decades of work FTDI (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/future-technology-devices-intl) have pioneered in making excellent quality USB controller ICs. This chip has taken the successful FT232H (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/ftdi-future-technology-devices-international-ltd/FT232HQ-REEL/2614626) that we're very fond of and added first-class USB Type C support with PD3.0 control. (https://www.usb.org/usb-charger-pd) Now in case you haven't tried them out yet, we make some nice FT232H breakouts here at Adafruit (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2264). This chip from FTDI is similar to their USB to serial converter chips (https://www.adafruit.com/product/284) but adds a 'multi-protocol synchronous serial engine' which allows it to speak many common protocols like SPI, I2C, serial UART, JTAG, and more! There's even a handful of digital GPIO pins that you can read and write to do things like flash LEDs, read switches or buttons, and more. The FT232H breakout is like adding a little swiss army knife for serial protocols to your computer! We recently even gave this chip a bit of a refresh by adding a Stemma QT port, an I2C mode switch, and a USB C port. However, that USB C port doesn't do anything fancy with USB C - it just has the bare-minimum resistors to let the upstream port know to give it 5V and use classic USB D+ and D- lines The FT232HP, on the other hand, is a full new version of the chip with individual CC1/CC2 pins that are used to communicate with the upstream port to tell it what voltage level and current level desired. With PD, we can request up to 20V on the power pins (https://www.usb.org/usb-charger-pd) - and it can do this fully automagically by configuring an external EEPROM chip that is wired up on a PCB. You can program the EEPROM as many times as you like, using the FTDI Prog tool or via a command line tool (https://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/AppNotes/AN_551_FT4232HP_FT2232HP_FT232HP_Configuration_Guide.pdf) Once configured you can also use GPIO pins to adjust the PD settings, or even use a built in I2C peripheral engine that can be configured by a separate microcontroller. Besides the fancy new USB C power delivery control - the FT232HP and FT233HP also of course have the GPIO-control goodies we love about this series. The MPSSE peripheral set can mimic a wide variety of popular and useful protocols such UART RS232, RS422, RS485, 8-bit parallel, JTAG, SPI and I2C controllers. We've got Adafruit Blinka support for MPSSE (https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpython-on-any-computer-with-ft232h) and while we haven't tested it with the FT232HP just yet, we're pretty sure it is going to be largely compatible (besides perhaps having a different USB PID). If you're making a product that needs USB C PD, and maybe some GPIO control over USB - this chip could really do a great job at saving you months of development time. Particularly if you can use the MPSSE control software on a computer to avoid any firmware writing at all! Or, if you do have a microcontroller, you could get rid of half your power supply by dropping a DC jack input and going with a smart USB adapter with PD source control. The FT233HP has more pins than the '232HP and adds a USB Sink PD port as well as 8 more GPIO pins. The Great Search: A Very Inexpensive seesaw 8 Bit Microcontroller
The Great Search is here to help you with the not-so-great parts shortage! As we're doing more seesaw-powered boards, we want a very inexpensive, simple, but fully-inclusive microcontroller. It can be 32 or 8 bit, not too particular about the core chipset, but we need to have 3 to 5V power/logic, internal crystal/oscillator, built in FLASH and RAM (EEPROM would be nice too!), ADCs, GPIOs, timers, and all that stuff. And we want it to be cheap! But with big stock outages, our biggest priority is a chip we can get in under a year. Lets see what we find on The Great Search. But since we want it to support any and all QT boards, we need more RAM and storage than the SAMD21 can provide. We probably cannot buy any SAMD51's for like a year - but RP2040 is a good option! Lots of RAM and we stuck an 8MB flash on there. The idea is you can attach a QT sensor or whatever on top with some nylon standoffs, maybe it will even auto-detect which sensors are plugged in! EYE on NPI – Sensirion SCD40 and SCD41 Compact CO2 Air Sensors
This week's EYE ON NPI is a timely one - the Sensirion SCD4X (SCD40 and SCD41) a fantastic upgrade to the Sensirion SCD30 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD30/8445334). Sensirion were clearly working on this sensor for a few years, but got some excellent timing as they finished and released it right when demand for CO2 sensors skyrocketed. Carbon dioxide, aka CO2, is a gas that is an essential part of the Earth's atmosphere and life in general. However, while essential, it can have negative effects when concentrations exceed certain levels. It can impact the entire planet via global warming. But it can also have very local effects, for example on indoor air quality. Elevated levels of CO2 can lead to reduced cognitive ability and other health related concerns. Therefore, monitoring CO2 levels of inside air can be useful as a part of gauging general air quality. Folks have had CO2 air-quality sensors in buildings and homes for a long time, but now they're extremely popular because CO2 levels are correlated with air freshness. Outdoor air is about 400 ppm CO2. Us humans love to breathe in air, extract the O2 and fill rooms with CO2. That means when there's poor ventilation to the outdoors, and lots of humans, the air is going to get higher and higher CO2. (https://theconversation.com/how-to-use-ventilation-and-air-filtration-to-prevent-the-spread-of-coronavirus-indoors-143732) We consider under 1000 ppm to be 'good' but really we want to keep it under 600 ppm if we can since that has been shown to reduce transmission of airborne disease (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/ina.12639) First, let's talk about the SCD-30, since this the next generation sensor. The SCD-30 is an NDIR sensor, which is a 'true' CO2 sensor that will tell you the CO2 PPM (parts-per-million) composition of ambient air. Unlike the SGP30, this sensor isn't approximating it from VOC gas concentration - it really is measuring the CO2 concentration! That means it's a lot bigger and more expensive than eCO2 sensors, but it is the real thing. Perfect for environmental sensing, scientific experiments, air quality and ventilation studies, and more. However, its...kinda chunky and requires hand-soldering. Thus the awesome introduction of the SCD4X series which comes in four part numbers: SCD-D-R1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD40-D-R1/13684001), SCD-D-R2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD40-D-R2/13684003), SCD41-D-R1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD41-D-R1/13684000) and SCD41-D-R2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SCD41-D-R2/13684005). The SCD40 and SCD41 differ in price and precision. SCD40 is base accuracy, with a specified range of 400 to 2000 ppm for continuous measurements, good for vast majority of indoor measurements. SCD41 is high accuracy, specified range 400 to 5,000 ppm, with both continuous and single shot mode supported: perhaps better for scientific or industrial or low-power use cases. Both have the same instructions and footprint so you could swap them easily on the PCBs. It was really easy for us to get an Arduino demo going with the SCD4x because Sensirion has written drivers for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Python and even MakeCode! (https://github.com/Sensirion/?q=scd4&type=&language=&sort=) Add to that, there's a cute breakout board with JST-PH connector and breakout pads so you can quickly wire it up and get data into your favorite platform. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/sensirion-ag/SEK-SCD41-SENSOR/13684004?s=N4IgTCBcDaIM4GMAmAWEBdAvkA) The sensor can run from 3 to 5V but we've noted that it needs very low ripple - so use the quietest power supply you have access to. With built-in humidity and temperature sensing as well, it's an all-in-one air measurement sensor about the size of a skittle. You can pick up SCD40 and SCD41 sensors at Digi-Key. EYE SPI with my little eyes ... a 1.69" TFT with Flex Connector!
Sparkfun came up with Qwiic and really changed how easy and fool-proof it is to use I2C sensor - and likewise we dig the new flex connector standard that DFRobot came up with for their displays. It has 18 pins so plenty for SPI, I2C, power, and a few extra GPIO. It's designed for displays so we're calling this EYE SPI! We hope it becomes a standard pinout way to connect SPI displays to microcontrollers! Let's put together some breakout boards. This is a breakout for a round-rect 1.69" TFT. It's not the best time to be working on TFTs, given the shortage, but we wanted to wrap this one up anyways. Zippy iPod-like Rotary Encoder Breakout Test
These rotary encoder user-interface elements remind us a lot of very old iPods (before it was all touch wheel interface). The middle wheel is a rotary encoder, and there's 5 buttons in addition (up down left right and center). We made a breakout to test the footprint and whipped up a little demo - the Feather reads the buttons and encoder and light up the attached NeoPixel ring to match.
