Next up for seesaw - analog input support
We're slowly getting through to all the things we coded up for seesaw https://github.com/adafruit/seesaw and porting it to our Arduino-library-version here https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_seesawPeripheral . We've got digital in and out, now doing analog input. Thankfully, we should be able to quickly adapt to other chips that have Arduino core support which will make development/debugging easier. #adafruit #seesaw #arduno Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Great Search: Finding An Eval Board For Your Chip!
Catching up to a project we started last month - we need to redesign some of our boards due to the chip shortage. We decided to move from the SAMD09 to the ATtiny816 (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/05/18/the-great-search-a-very-inexpensive-seesaw-8-bit-microcontroller-thegreatsearch-digikey-digikey-adafruit-microchipmakes/) because it seems available/low cost and capable enough. Once you've spec'd the chip, it's nice to get an eval board or two. This will get us going quickly! I'll share some tip for what I look for in an eval board, as well as how to find an eval board even if one doesn't exist for your chip (!) —————————————- Catch live airings of The Great Search in the Desk of Ladyada broadcasts – playlist https://youtu.be/46zAO_3-ozY —————————————– Visit the Adafruit shop online – http://www.adafruit.com LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/

IoT Smart Fume Extractor
Build a smart DIY fume extractor with an Adafruit FunHouse and CircuitPython. Use a PWM fan and the EMC2101 controller to change the speed based on readings from an SPG30 air quality sensor. Learn Guide https://learn.adafruit.com/funhouse-fume-extractor/ Project video by Liz https://youtu.be/3rwHkWDBnlA Use CircuitPython libraries and ESP32-S2 to connect to WiFi and log sensor data to a feed and display it on a dashboard with Adafruit IO. Use the FunHouse’s built-in TFT to display bitmap graphics with fan speed and air quality. Use the built-in buttons to select options like choosing to log data. CircuitPython makes it easy to customize features, experiment with other hardware and quickly iterate. The electronics are housed in a 3D printed enclosure that snap fits together. Use a carbon activated filter to adsorb smoke from solder fumes. The fan controller and air quality sensor are connect with STEMMA QT cables for a plug-and-play circuit. A mini fan mounted in front of the air quality sensor directs fumes for sampling and measuring. The ports on the FunHouse make it easy to power 5V peripheral. Porting our seesaw SAMD09 core to ATTINY
Seesaw is an open source microcontroller friend for other chips. It provides a variety of capabilities such as UART, ADC, DAC, extra GPIO, etc. to chips that don't have them. We've used the SAMD09 for seesaw for years, and it's been great. But now we can't find any SAMD09 on the market for a year or two - so it's time to redesign! We're going with the ATtiny817 and megaTinyCore https://github.com/SpenceKonde/megaTinyCore with great success so far! #SAMD09 #ATTINY #Seesaw Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Desk of Ladyada - The Desk of Ladyada - STEMMA seesaw in Arduino with megaTinyCore
OK it was a little rainy out yesterday so we finally got around to porting our CMSIS/arm-gcc 'seesaw' core over to Arduino. Thankfully https://github.com/SpenceKonde has written an awesome Arduino core for this chip so we were able to get up and running very quickly! Check out their tindie at https://www.tindie.com/stores/DrAzzy/ Using an eval board for the tiny817, and some CI tooling, we quickly added support for almost all of the seesaw commands and published the code. We'll also show how we will customize firmware with #define's The Great Search - Finding An Eval Board For Your Chip! https://www.digikey.com/short/f5wb212b Catching up to a project we started last month - we need to redesign some of our boards due to the chip shortage. EYE ON NPI - 3305 Series Open Bottom Low-Profile Receptacles
This week's EYE ON NPI is all in on keyboard hacking, just like us! The Mill-Max 3305 series open bottom, low-profile, solder mount receptacles are specifically designed to make mechanical key switches hot-swappable. The 3305 series is designed to be soldered into a 0.060” (1.50 mm) minimum mounting hole with an ultra-thin retention shoulder so plugged-in components sit nearly flush to the board surface. The open bottom design is meant to accommodate varying lead lengths, making this a very versatile receptacle. These sockets are popular in the keyboard building and modification community for allowing folks to have PCBs that allow socketing or direct-soldering of switches without any height changes or PCB layout changes. Compared to previous sockets manufactured by Mill-Max, the 3305's are lower profile and have gold plating for long-life reliable contacts. Cherry MX switches (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/cherry-americas-llc/MX1A-E1NW/20180) have a standardized pinout, with a large center hole - two optional side-stability holes and two normally-open contacts. Cherry offers a wide range of switches with the same pinout/physical shape but with different mechanical attributes - some are smooth/linear, some are loud and clicky. Of course, many people like to customize what the switches are on a keyboard. Now, hopefully your keyboard manufacturer comes with different options for keys. but maybe you're doing a build or its an older design you want to update. You can carefully de-solder switches to replace them, but it's much better to socket them like we do with chips. (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2203) Sockets do exist for MX switches, (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4958/13997772), at this time both Gateron and Kailh make em. The good news is they work quite well - but they do require a new PCB layout for the SMT pads. All good for folks making new designs. But, sometimes you don't have the ability to change the design - or for some constraint reason you don't want to use these sockets. That's where the Mill-Max 3305's come in! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/millmax/3305-series-open-bottom-receptacles) These ultra-slim ferrules can be soldered into existing plated through holes that are made in a PCB design. After soldering them in, two per switch, they accept the rectangularish contacts on MX and compatible switches. Best of all, they come in pick-and-place tape so you can integrate these into your manufacturing process or solder by hand. Now, you might be thinking "this seems really specialized to a specific purpose, why bring this up on EYE ON NPI?" Aha, because while these are designed for use with MX switches, these could be used to socket all kinds of through hole parts without changing PCB layout or height. For specialized parts, sensors or tubes or specialized displays, there may not be a plug-and-play ready to go socket available. But you still don't want to solder it right into your PCB? Check the lead sizes...you may be able to use these inexpensive sockets! Best of all, since they're open-bottom you can go with any length chip lead. Various lengths of Mill-Max 3305 sockets are in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment. (https://www.digikey.com/short/45bfzdj7) Order today and you can start socketing securely by tomorrow morning! See at Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/short/45bfzdj7 See the Mill-Max video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ig6UFJOF5g

The Great Search: SMT PTC Fuses
For the KB2040 board we're working on, we want to add a PTC fuse. These fuses auto-'heal' after they cool down and they're pick and place friendly, so they're easy to use. We're going to add one to this board so it has similar behavior as the Pro Micro it is pin-compatible with. PTC fuses are available in a few different voltages, current ratings and sizes - let's find the one we need for this tight-fit PCB! Adafruit Macropad RP2040 bring-up test
We put together our hopefully-final prototypes for the Macropad we're working on at the office. Now we're home and it's time to bring up the design. We like to do our bring-ups in Arduino, so we're using the Philhower Arduino core to make a definition and verify all the hardware works. The new part here is the OLED, which uses a new chipset, but similar enough to other OLEDs we wrote a driver pretty fast. This test program lights up all the switch neopixels, tracks the rotary encoder direction and pushbutton, and scans I2C connected to the Stemma QT port. So far so good! #adafruit #keyboard #macropad Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Assembly of Macropad Prototype
We're back to working day-shifts in the office, which means access to our mega-oven for prototypes. We loved ya, lil reflow plate, but for bigger protos like this an oven really does a great job. We're pasting the components by with a syringe, then hand placing the parts for two protos. After a trip through the oven, we do a little hand-cleanup of bridged pads and then it's time to bring up the board! Desk of Ladyada - Macropad Bringup & Calculator Py
This week on the Desk of Ladyada we're doing the bringup of our hopefully-final revision of the RP2040 macropad we're working on. Arduino is working solidly, and CircuitPython is getting there. We have to get the OLED driver bugs ironed out but the hardware seems solid! Next up, we've acquired a TI calculator running a fork of CircuitPython. Let's check it out and see what has been added. The Great Search - SMT PTC Fuses https://www.digikey.com/short/24zcmdwc For the KB2040 board we're working on, we want to add a PTC fuse. These fuses auto-'heal' after they cool down and they're pick and place friendly, so they're easy to use. We're going to add one to this board so it has similar behavior as the Pro Micro it is pin-compatible with. PTC fuses are available in a few different voltages, current ratings and sizes - lets find the one we need for this tight-fit PCB! #adafruit #deskofladyada #thegreatsearch Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Macropad RP2040 bring-up part deux - CircuitPython time!
Now that we have my hardware validated in Arduino, it's time to get it running in CircuitPython as well. We needed to write a little patch to the core to fix a row/col swap so that the SH1106 driver will work right https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/pull/4864 however, once we got that fixed, the display/buttons/encoder are working perfectly. Next up maybe we can get the onboard audio working so that the final PCBs can be ordered. #adafruit #python #arduino Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

We sure love our Cherry MX compatible switches, but let's be honest....they're kinda big. What if you want something svelte? The Kailh CHOC v1's are much shorter. Here are some samples we are testing out of clicky white and linear red Choc1's with two color options for keycaps and PCB sockets. Watch out - these are totally incompatible with MX-series sockets and caps! EYE ON NPI - Raspberry Pi RP2040
This week's EYE ON NPI is easy-as-pie: it's the Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC0908-7/14306009), finally available for purchase in tape and reel for manufacturing. The RP2040 is one of the most hotly-anticipated EYE ON NPI's of the year - it's been a few months since we've been enjoying the RP2040 in devboards. Adafruit has featured it in many popular dev boards like the QT Py RP2040 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4900), Feather RP2040 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4884/14000603) and ItsyBitsy RP2040 https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/4888/14115610). Thanks to the Raspberry Pi Foundation, Adafruit got a few early reels so we could develop our layouts and board designs - that whetted the appetites of a lot of developers who saw the massive number of designs available from Sparkfun, Pimoroni, Seeed and others and wanted to join in the fun! Well, now you can because Digi-Key is stocking the chips in reels for anyone to purchase. They're available in 7" reels (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC0908-7/14306009) with 500 chips in a spool, or in 13" reels (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/raspberry-pi/SC0908-13/14306010) with 3400 chips. At a cost of $1 each pre-quantity (quantity pricing is not yet determined) For that $1, you get a lot of technology: RP2040 Chip features: Dual ARM Cortex-M0+ @ 133MHz 264kB on-chip SRAM in six independent banks Support for up to 16MB of off-chip Flash memory via dedicated QSPI bus DMA controller Fully-connected AHB crossbar Interpolator and integer divider peripherals On-chip programmable LDO to generate core voltage 2 on-chip PLLs to generate USB and core clocks 30 GPIO pins, 4 of which can be used as analog inputs Peripherals 2 UARTs 2 SPI controllers 2 I2C controllers 16 PWM channels USB 1.1 controller and PHY, with host and device support 8 PIO state machines The RP2040 uses the Cortex M0+ core, which is is good for microcontroller projects. It's not fast enough or capable of running Linux like a Raspberry Pi computer but it can run Arduino/MicroPython/RTOS pretty easily. To make up for the M0 core, the chip is run very fast, at ~130MHz, much faster than many of the Cortex M0's we've worked with that tend to run at 48 Mhz or so. Since it is an M0 chip, it does not have a floating point unit or DSP hardware support - so if you're doing something with heavy floating point math, it will be done in software and thus not as fast as a Cortex M4. For peripherals, there are two I2C controllers, two SPI controllers, and two UARTs that are generously multiplexed across the GPIO - check the pinout for what pins can be set to which. There are 16 PWM channels, each pin has a channel it can be set to (ditto on the pinout). While its not a full crossbar-type chip, it's easy to find pins for your peripherals. You'll note there's no I2S peripheral, or SDIO, or camera, what's up with that? Well instead of having specific hardware support for serial-data-like peripherals like these, the RP2040 comes with the PIO state machine system which is a unique and powerful way to create custom hardware logic and data processing blocks that run on their own without taking up a CPU. For example, NeoPixels - often we bitbang the timing-specific protocol for these LEDs. For the RP2040, we instead use PIO object that reads in the data buffer and clocks out the right bitstream with perfect accuracy. Same with I2S audio in or out, LED matrix displays, 8-bit or SPI based TFTs, even VGA! In MicroPython and CircuitPython you can create PIO control commands to script the peripheral and load it in at runtime. There are 2 PIO peripherals with 4 state machines each. While the RP2040 has lots of onboard RAM (264KB), it does not have built-in FLASH memory. Instead, that is provided by the external QSPI flash chip. You will need to provide external FLASH memory using QSPI NOR memory. The flash chip is shared between the program it's running and any file storage used by MicroPython or CircuitPython. We like this GigaDevice chip (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/gigadevice-semiconductor-hk-limited/GD25Q80CSIGR/9484688) but just about any QSPI flash memory will work just fine. You'll also need a 12 MHz crystal and lots of capacitors and some passive components to finish off the design. With top-notch documentation, lots of board examples, firmware-aplenty, and of course a rock-bottom price, its an excellent chip to use for just about anything. Especially with the PIO peripherals, this chip can 'punch up' quite a bit and perform tasks or process data that normally would require much more powerful chips or advanced peripherals - things like cameras, TFT displays, motor drivers, PDM/I2S/PCM encoding and more. Sign up to be notified the moment the RP2040 chips are in stoc
