This week's EYE ON NPI has frickin' ceramics with frickin' lasers on its head - it's a Wurth Elektronik Vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) infrared laser emitter (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wurth-electronics/wl-vcsl-vertical-cavity-surface-laser) . These pick-and-placeable components look a little like large LEDs, and they sort-of are. Ooh we're fabbing QT Py RP2040 https://www.adafruit.com/product/4900 as fast as possible, folks love these adorable boards. With an RP2040 chip plus 8MB flash plus QT connector plus NeoPixel and two buttons...what is not to love? We want to get these tested as fast as possible, so we're using the Teensy 3.6 as a mass storage host, it 'drag's the UF2 over to the drive which then performs the self test. We're drunk on Trinkey's here - we tested our four pending designs: slide trinkey, neokey trinkey, rotary trinkey and prox/light trinkey. All working well, we made Arduino and CircuitPython definitions for all four, and wrote a little example code. We also got a funky rotary encoder sample, a Kano Motion Sensor unboxing/teardown and a preview of BUNDLE FLY - the new CircuitPython library manager built into the adafruit learning system! We also started thinking about a Trinkey for connecting any I2C sensor, maybe a QT Trinkey...which we're going a slightly different direction with. Rotary encoders are fun but a real pain to implement, especially if you don't have a real time OS. This seesaw-powered board give you a rotary encoder with I2C interface, the lil Cortex M0 is cheap and powerful enough to handle the gray code toggle counting, and then pass back the value to the I2C controller whenever requested. You can chain a bunch together on one bus for lotsa twisting fun. We're going to add a NeoPixel and then fabricate! We're finally getting back to some really old seesaw projects. Seesaw is our "i2c to anything" protocol/chip firmware. We're on a bit of a tear, playing with mechanical interface elements like mechanical keyswitches and now rotary encoders. This week we finished our 4-key I2C breakout, we had a yucky edge-case condition in our firmware where an GPIO IRQ could come in while we were handling one already, which caused a lockup. We also finished a very old project to make an I2C rotary encoder, while we were in the seesaw code we extended the code to support up to 16 encoders on arbitrary pins, we're planning on making a 4-encoder I2C breakout with NeoPixels. We also got our prototypes back for some more trinkeys! We're also thinking of making a 4-potentiometer seesaw board.
