A wild Kee Boar appears! It's a shiny KB2040!
A lot of folks like using Adafruit parts for their Keeb builds - but with the itsybitsy not being pin-compatible with the pro micro pinout, it really wasnt very easy without some sort of adapter plate. now we're seeing lots of people use circuitpython for keebs, which is awesome! why not try our hands at spinning up a pro-micro-compatible RP2040 board? the RP2040 is plenty powerful, low cost and makes for an excellent keeb driver chip. we tried to mix together the things we liked most about the sparkfun pro micro rp2040 (Qwiic/QT I2C port on the end, so good!) the Elite-C (castellated pads & pins for D+ and D-!) and our existing 2040 boards (boot button can be used for user, 8MB QSPI flash, onboard NeoPixel, jumper for skipping the diode/fuse for high power RGB LEDs or USB hosting). we even got it to all fit on a 2 layer PCB with 7/7 routing - just needed to make the smallest caps and resistors 0402. ground plane didnt suffer too much either - take a look! (hat tip to JLCPCB who fixed up their gerber render to manage castellated pads) #adafruit #keeb #keyboard Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Desk of Ladyada - EYE SPI some Mechanical Keeb PCBs!
We did a bunch of lil things this week, let's check them out: We designed a Kee Boar with the RP2040, based on the Pro Micro pinout but with some cute extras. Our snap-apart ortho keeb breakout PCBs arrived, as did our RP2040 macro-pad PCBs. We also tested our Zippy click-wheel breakout and are looking for a replacement chip for seesaw (that we can get in stock!) THE GREAT SEARCH - Don't overpay for out-of-stock parts, find Digi-key alts! https://www.digikey.com/short/q7c5j24m https://www.digikey.com/short/t72d3fvq The great search is here to help you with your not-so-great parts shortage! This week we're looking at a twitter thread of folks commiserating over AWOL components. Tobias is frustrated to see a 30 cent part, the TPS27081A (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/TPS27081ADDCR/3671584?s=N4IgTCBcDaICoAUDKYDsAGAHARgIIAIQBdAXyA) go for $15 from unscrupulous brokers! (https://twitter.com/Dg3Yev/status/1391155677675073538) Maybe we can find some pin-compatible alternatives for them? Open source stories - Supporting MicroPython - ASK AN ENGINEER clip https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/04/29/happy-8th-birthday-micropython-micropython-micropython-and-adafruit-sponsoring-join-in/ We celebrated MicroPython’s previous birthdays, last year in NYC we were dealing with shutdowns, death, sickness, and more – so we did not get a chance to do a post. But with a new year and 2021 going in the right direction, we are making some noise about the 8th birthday in all the ways we can! Happy Birthday! We have stocked the official PyBoards from Damien, made direct donations to Micropython to support Damien’s work, make and share contributions, based on CircuitPython core on MicroPython and NOW with GitHub sponsors, we did a $5k sponsorship. Their goal is $5k a month in sponsors, so 1 full month is on us. We hope other companies and orgs that use MicroPython will consider doing a monthly or one-time as well. Companies / orgs can now sponsor, so this was Adafruit sponsoring. #adafruit #micropython #circuitpython

EYE on NPI – TI BQ25792 I2C Controlled, 1-4 Cell, 5-A Buck-Boost Battery Charger
This week's EYE on NPI is one I've personally got an EYE on for a few months: the TI BQ25792 I2C Controlled, 1-4 Cell, 5-A Buck-Boost Battery Charger. This luxurious charger caught my eye a few months ago and now it's available for purchase and I'm really excited about it. This chip does everything you could ever want from a battery charger. We showed off a charger chip last week that was designed specifically for ultra-low current and voltages - great for TEC's or small solar cells. But what if you want HUGE charging capabilities? The TI BQ25792 has you covered, no matter your application. First great thing - support for any size battery. We have lots of battery packs in the Adafruit shop, and in particular we use 1S batteries - if there's more batteries they are wired in series. But there's lot of folks who are building robotics that require higher voltages, so they have 2S, 3S, or 4S batteries. This charger can handle any of em, and you can configure the battery pack size using a simple resistor on the PROG port. Second great thing - support for just about any voltage power supply input. Once you set the battery size, the output charging voltage has to be 4.2V-per-cell. Normally that means that if you're charging a 1S battery, you'd want a 5V power supply (4.2V plus some headroom). For 2S you want 9V to 12V, etc. Sometimes you'll see buck or boost chargers that let you have a lower or higher voltage. This chip is a buck-boost so you can have anything from 3.6V to 25V input and it will do the right thing to get you the voltage you need to charge the battery pack you have. There's some efficiency-loss on conversion, but much less than a linear supply and you don't have to worry about needing the exact-right power adapter or USB power supply. (https://e2e.ti.com/blogs_/b/powerhouse/posts/universal-and-fast-charging-a-future-trend-for-battery-powered-applications) OK we've done the output, we've done the input. Now lets look at the creamy middle: This charger has our favorite TI-capability: VINDPM and IINDPM - the ability to track the input voltage to make sure it is not drooping from over-draw. Say you have a battery, you want to charge it at 2A, but the wall adapter maxes out at 1A - you don't want the voltage to collapse on you, it's better to charge slowly at 1A than not at all at 2A. VINDPM/IINDPM auto-monitors the voltage and if it starts dropping, it will reduce the current draw. There's also ICO, which attempts to find the max-power-point for the power adapter, which may not be the exact same thing since there's different buck-boost efficiencies at different voltages. For when you're using USB for power, the charger can auto-detect the 'Apple-style' resistors used to set the max-draw current available. (In theory, we acknowledge it's probably better to just VINDPM/IINDPM when possible but we figure it's also polite to stick to the max-current-draw set by the chargers. Finally, there is an "OTG" mode where the converter 'turns around' and can be a buck-boost that runs off the battery to charge another device. Really a wonderful chip with a lot of capabilities and looks like no matter what it is you're trying to charge or power! I'm ordering some BQ25792 today for a new design I'm working on. From the looks of this datasheet, TI really stepped it up here (pun intended!) to make a battery charger everyone will love. Check out TI's video for a lot more details (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjk5YWrt8Ww) The BQ25792 is stock right now, for immediate shipment from Digi-Key (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/BQ25792RQMR/13577777) See on Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/short/3q2mnt5t

The Great Search: Alternatives to TL074 Op-Amps!
We noticed a few synth-makers getting worried about not being about to source TL074 quad op-amps! https://twitter.com/theavalkyrie/status/1381800012162666497 https://twitter.com/otdispace/status/1382920010042081283 We thought we'd spend this Great Search looking at the TL074 - why its so great and what to look for in an alternative. We asked 'guest' - the co-designer of the x0xb0x to drop some knowledge on us: the 074 is pretty much the toyota corolla of opamps. its not the best at anything in particular, but pretty good at everything. its the second cheapest opamp out there, comes in dip and soic, has relatively low current consumption, low distortion, and reasonable bandwidth and slew rate. the noise is ok-ish low, but the thing that really makes it an all around performer is the low bias current. its down in the pA range, which means you can use it for S/H or VCO,VCF, etc that require a range of currents down to the nAs. a lot of people used the LM358 because it is the cheapest opamp, but it has high bias current. the 074 can also handle high voltage rails which helps with SNR. it was designed for audio use, and was one of the first real mass market opamps back in the late 70s (if i recall correctly). the 741 was the first, and this was meant as an improvement over that. the 074 and 084 were made at the same time, and 074s were selected for lower noise, better distortion, and lower offset voltage, and then marketed at the audio market. the 084 was sold to everyone else. Who doesn't love the TL074? Apparently a lot of people - so let's look at a backup-option. It may not be as cheap/good but maybe it'll be in stock! Desk of Ladyada - Auto-generating detailed pinout diagrams & an RP2040 Macro Key P
This week's Desk of Ladyada is a little light on hardware, as we spent some of the weekend outside and the rest on some software hacking! We used to get very nice pinout diagrams made for our boards by a fellow named Pighixxx. They ended up doing a crowdfunding project that didn't work out and they stopped replying to emails. We like having pinout diagrams but also know that if it's too hard, we won't keep up. Check out Bill Binko's video for a manual technique https://blog.adafruit.com/2019/07/11/automating-the-making-of-beautiful-pinout-diagrams-for-microcontroller-boards-documentation-at_makers/ Much like our Fritzing tool which can generate 99%-ready fritzing objects, having an automated way is best! We looked at the Sparkfun Graphical Datasheet tool (https://github.com/sparkfun/Graphical_Datasheets) and its a step in the right direction - but we didn't want to have to create a CSV for each board because I am very lazy! So we're experimenting with using the Fritzing file, circuitpython pin file, and a single chip-pinout spreadsheet to help us get something 'good enough' even if it isn't as beautiful as the Pighixxx ones. I'll talk about some of the tools we ended up using and why we still need a human to wrap it up. We also made the first draft of an RP2040-powered 3x4 macro pad with rotary encoder and OLED that we'll show off. The Great Search - Alternatives to TL074 Op-Amps! https://www.digikey.com/short/85mv3mrm We noticed a few synth-makers getting worried about not being about to source TL074 quad op-amps! https://twitter.com/theavalkyrie/status/1381800012162666497 https://twitter.com/otdispace/status/1382920010042081283 We thought we'd spend this Great Search looking at the TL074 - why its so great and what to look for in an alternative. #adafruit #digikey #thegreatsearch Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

SAMD51 Parallel Image Capture from OV7670 Camera in CircuitPython
Did you know the SAMD51 has a PCC (parallel capture) peripheral, for reading in camera/video data? that's right, you can directly wire up OV7670/OV2640-like cameras to a SAMD51 and then read out image data into a RAM buffer. We just got support into CircuitPython as well, so we can read a buffer, as seen here, then pipe it back out over SPI to a TFT. Could be great for image recognition, tinyML, DIY cameras, IoT monitoring, etc! The camera almost-perfectly plugs into a Grand Central, you have to cut the two pins for 3V/GND and rewire them, as well as adding I2C pullups. RP2040 Camera Image Capture in CircuitPython
Did you know the RP2040 PIO periperals can be configured for reading in camera/video data? that's right, you can directly wire up OV7670/OV2640-like cameras to a RP2040/Pico and then read out image data into a RAM buffer (thankfully theres a ton of RAM on the RP2040). EYE on NPI – Bosch BME688
This week's EYE ON NPI smells so sweet, it's the BME688 digital nose gas sensor from Bosch! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bosch-sensortec/bme688-4-in-1-environmental-sensing) The BME680 is a very nice gas sensor released a few years ago, and remains the only temperature-humidity-pressure-gas sensors that we've ever seen. Small and easy to use, at Adafruit we've sold tens of thousands of BME680 sensors on breakout boards so we're very excited to see the next-generation of BME68x chips arriving and in stock at Digi-Key. The BME688 is completely back compatible to the BME680, in fact over the weekend we added support to the latest Bosch C API (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_BME680) So, like the BME680 you get a high-grade temperature, humidity and pressure sensor that can measure humidity with ±3% accuracy, barometric pressure with ±1 hPa absolute accuracy, and temperature with ±1.0°C accuracy. Because pressure changes with altitude, and the pressure measurements are so good, you can also use it as an altimeter with ±1 meter or better accuracy! I'm going to order some ASAP to turn into a breakout board, it looks like this chip is fully pin-compatible with the BME680 so if you need an example circuit that we know works, check out our open source BME680 design. (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-BME680-PCB) If you're looking for a great all-in-one sensor, and particularly if you've been using the BME680 and want to upgrade, there's thousands of BME688 stock at Digi-Key right now at a great price! (https://www.digikey.com/short/0vjw0b8q) Order today and you will be smelling success by tomorrow afternoon.
