Historically this maybe meant a delay of a few weeks or at worst, months. Now some parts are delayed 2 years! We're revising some designs we were about to launch with 'flip flop' designs - where we lay out two alternative packages. We've been using the IS31FL3731 for a while to do monochromatic LED driving/dimming. But for RGB LED driving, we need moar channels! So we're trying out the IS31FL3741, which can handle an astonishing 351 individually-dimmable LEDs in 39x9 matrix. Divide by three for RGB LEDs, and you've got a 13x9 24-bit color display, all controllable over I2C! This week's EYE ON NPI is super-brainy but also good looking (or maybe it's good at looking) - the Intel RealSense Camera Depth module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/intel-realsense/id-solution-f450-f455) is ready for embedding in your product to add instant facial recognition with excellent quality hardware and software from Intel. Long-time viewers of EYE ON NPI know that we're suckers for sensors and edge computing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_computing) AI products - devices with machine learning capabilities (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_learning) that can function without the use of Cloud Computing or internet connectivity. Why? 1) More security controls: if it can't connect to the internet, you don't have to worry about data being used elsewhere by people who aren't supposed to have it 2) More privacy controls: if it can't connect to the internet, you don't have to worry about data being used elsewhere by the people who are supposed to have it but maybe are planning on selling it or misusing it 3) Installation and usage flexibility: can install it in places without good network connectivity, don't have to worry about a Verizon outage taking your product down. There's also other important parameters that may be improved by edge computing: lower power, smaller PCB, lower cost, no subscription fees. All good stuff! This platform is available in two packages: one is a slick USB-connected rectangle (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/intel-realsense/82635DSF455/13670508) that can be mounted with a 'camera tripod' 1/4-20 screw, and one that's a bare PCB with a FPC connector (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/intel-realsense/82635DSF450/13670511). That's really neat in our opinion because it means you can use this technology with an every-day computer by plugging it into a USB port or doing a full integration into your product design. We picked up one of each. Of course, if you're just getting started, you may want to go with the all-enclosed one since its so easy to get going. We downloaded the Windows enrolling software (you can also enroll via the API, but this is a nice app) and updated the firmware. Then we practiced enrolling. Enrolling a face is always going to be a little annoying because it really needs to get good data. You really want to be close up, and have your head straight-on to the camera. It took a few tries, however once done it worked great during detection even when far away. We previous covered RealSense on EYE ON NPI, but that was with a LIDAR camera. (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/09/17/eye-on-npi-intel-realsense-lidar-camera-eyeonnpi-lidar-digikey-digikey-intel-adafruit/) This uses two every-day cameras to do depth calculation, so it's a lot cheaper and smaller. The module is only a few mm thick! The thing that really sold us on this module is the simplicity of usage - once you've got people enrolled, everything is done through a serial port/UART. That makes it incredibly easy to integrate into any kind of system - from a microcontroller to a single board Linux computer to a desktop running MacOS. And there's a full API for RealSense (https://github.com/IntelRealSense/RealSenseID) on the Intel GitHub repo (https://github.com/IntelRealSense). The 54-pin FPC connector on the module exposes pretty much everything on the PCB assembly. Best of all, the price of the full products is really low - it would be hard to DIY your own solution for less than the $87 each module costs. And with the heavy lifting of the face recognition done completely on this device, you can reduce the complexity of the rest of your design. Like, literally you could integrate this into your design in less than a week. USB controllable panel mount and tower-light samples What can we say, we like tower lights and other notification systems. But they're often 12V and require a controller. These alerts are panel-mount friendly AND come with a USB cable for power and data. When plugged into a computer or Raspberry Pi they appear as a serial port. In this tutorial I walk through creating a curvy rectangular shape using the spline tool in Fusion 360. I show how to use symmetrical and equal sketch constraints to create a shape thats flexible and parametric. Whenever one side of the shape is effect, the other side is perfectly mirrored. One corner of the shape features a bezier handle with a sketch dimension (length and angle) making it easy to adjust a single corner and automatically update the other three. This technique was used in an upcoming project that uses spline curves to create a kitty paw shape. This week we've got a few things we've been hacking on. We tested out jepler's ESP32S2 camera support in CircuitPython. It works really well! Now that we have OV7670 and OV2640 camera modules supported we can move on to designing some hardware. We also wrote up a ISSI IS31FL374x (https://www.digikey.com/short/8q0nmn25) driver which is a more powerful version of the IS31FL3731 chips what we've used for our charlieplex wings. This driver can handle 160 independent RGB LEDs with constant-current adjustment and 8-bit PWM per LED. We would use these for boards that have more than ~50 NeoPixels/Dotstars because 'smart' LEDs are about 10 cents each on reel. It's getting hot here in New York City, we could use a little help cooling off, and this week's EYE ON NPI an ultra-cool blast of Nordic engineering - the nPM1100! It's the first power management IC from our favorite low-power-wireless company, Nordic Semiconductor. We've featured them on EYE ON NPI before - the Nordic Power Profiler Kit II (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/12/03/eye-on-npi-nordic-power-profiler-kit-ii-eyeonnpi-digikey-nordictweets-digikey-adafruit/) and the nRF53840 microcontroller (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/03/20/eye-on-npi-nordic-semiconductors-nrf5340-bluetooth-eyeonnpi-maximintegrated-digikey/) - and we've been using Nordic BLE chips for quite a while in our Bluefruit line of boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rf-evaluation-and-development-kits-boards/859?s=N4IgTCBcDaIEYBsCuBTAZgJyQSwC4gF0BfIA) For us Nordic is synonymous with Wireless and Low Power. That's their bag, and if you need something that's BLE and runs on a small battery for a long time, it's probably the product like you're going to use. Even Apple, who have gotten serious into designing their own silicon used the Nordic nRF52 series for the AirTag (https://www.ifixit.com/News/50145/airtag-teardown-part-one-yeah-this-tracks) When you make products that are designed and marketed to be used for low power wireless - like motion trackers, beacons/tags, fitness watches/bracelets, environmental monitor, etc. the power management system becomes less of a independently-run subsection of the electronics design. As we've seen in other EYE ON NPI's, there may be times when you drop the voltage down or raise it up to change quiescent current and RF transmission. A lot of Cortex chips we've seen lately have integrated buck converters that can be enabled/disabled on demand - they have higher quiescent current than LDOs, but may have lower overall run current during high draw. Buck converters also require an inductor, of course, and will have higher noise. Getting long life from battery is very hard, much harder than people think, and requires good firmware, hardware and integration design. Given the creating of the PPK2, it seems obvious to us that a lot of Nordic's time has been spent trying to get their their customers going with the battery performance they need without doing their design for them. A lot of time folks don't understand the way quiescent currents add up to drain batteries. To solve this for Nordic's customers, they've pulled the PMIC's that were historically integrated into the nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-QIAA-R7/11200025), nRF5340 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF5340-QKAA-R/13559661) and nRF9160 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF9160-SICA-R/12339212) and super-powered it into the nPM1100 (https://www.digikey.com/short/38n9f9dv) - an all-in-one battery charger, regulator and buck converter. Ultra-small form factor PMIC 2.075 x 2.075 mm WLCSP package 400 mA battery charger Termination voltage: JEITA compliant 4.1 V or 4.2 V selectable Charge current: 20 mA to 400 mA Highly efficient Buck regulator Output voltage: 1.8, 2.1, 2.7 or 3.0 V Current limit: 150 mA output USB compatible input regulator Overvoltage protection Ship mode disables power output Quiescent currents: 800 nA typical, 460 nA in ship mode Drivers for charge and error LEDs -40°C to 85°C operating temperature Things we like - this chip is fully standalone and strapped with resistors or pins so you don't have to configure it over I2C or 1-Wire or anything and two direct LED outputs for instant visible feedback with a bi-color LED. Works with USB but has input protection for higher voltages in case something gets mis-plugged. Three-in-one integration design means you can pick and choose the pieces you want. It's clearly designed for boards that use sporadic power, and has a 'ship mode' to reduce power draw while its in storage/shipment to the customer - many of these devices don't have a true Off button/switch, so before the first use they'll want to be disabled/enabled with soft-switch buttons to wake up. In Nordic's case studies, they were able to up the run time of a wearable health-monitor bracelet by taking advantage of the buck converter to reduce run-time quiescent current. While designed for Nordic wireless chipsets, this PMIC would be well suited to wearable/low-power designs and you know that Nordic takes low power very seriously so this chip will hit the ground running with a tiny chip that does it all. Adafruit seesaw is a near-universal converter framework which allows you to add add and extend hardware support to any I2C-capable microcontroller or microcomputer. Instead of getting separate I2C GPIO expanders, ADCs, PWM drivers, etc, seesaw can be configured to give a wide range of capabilities.
