Chances are you've been warned by your suppliers that many parts are in short supply, and lead times have stretched into the many-months or even a year! Here at The Great Search we feel ya, we've seen many components evaporate. Parts that were discontinued-but-still-available are now 'really really discontinued' But no worries, with a little search-skills we're often able to find replacements. So it's no surprise we'll be doing a few 'alternative' search shows! This week we're going on the hunt for a replacement to the APX803-26SAG, our favorite auto-reset supervisor - a little chip that has helped countless designs wake up cleanly. It's no longer available, will we be able to find a drop-in replacement?

DVD bounce demo for Metro iMX RT1011
We're playing around, testing things on the upcoming Metro M7 https://www.adafruit.com/product/4950. This time we're doing a TFT shield demo to test out displayio and our ILI9341 driver. We made a fun bouncing DVD demo with transparent pixels. Our code allows a dynamic number of DVD logos for bouncing pleasure. Mostly this is us seeing how a 500 MHz processor feels with CircuitPython! It was Arduino Day yesterday, check out Arduino's YouTube channel for recorded streams. We tried out an Arduino board support package for the RP2040/Pico with success! We got the Feather RP2040 and our QT Py both up and running with some demos. NeoKey designs are starting to make it into the shop. We sketched up a possible new Trinkey design and a breakout for a fancy new CO2 sensor. On the QT front, we're going back and QTifying some older designs still. This week we redid our old 7-segment breakouts - ancient stuff! We also spent a lot of time snagging components so we can keep in production for the next 6 months plus. QT Py RP2040 running Arduino code!
We tried out our Feather RP2040 with this early Arduino core for the Pi RP2040/Pico https://github.com/earlephilhower/arduino-pico and that worked out so we wanted to then try out our upcoming QT Py 2040 https://www.adafruit.com/product/4900 as well. We plugged in our OLED with Stemma QT, and then popped a temperature sensor on the end. After configuring the I2C pins, it worked great. Trying out Arduino Core for Pico on a Feather
We saw this nifty Arduino core for the Raspberry Pi Pico / RP2040, developed by earlephilhower https://github.com/earlephilhower/arduino-pico and decided to take it for a spin! It's early, and there's a few caveats but it works! Here's our test of I2C with a temperature sensor and SPI with a TFT display. USB Serial also works. Pretty neat stuff, this is just us trying it out while we wait for the official Arduino core for the RP2040. EYE ON NPI - One-Touch FFC/FPC Easy-On Connectors
See this product on Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/short/rn8rw873 This week's EYE ON NPI is keeping things easy, with an innovative new approach to flex connectors: introducing the One-Touch series of push-button FPC connectors from Molex! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/molex/one-touch-ffc-fpc-easy-on-connectors) Molex's connectors have a visible release button that allows for easy release operation. An innovation that will keep assembly and maintenance of flex connectors safe and easy. We use flex cables a lot in our electronic design. (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=fpc&sort=BestMatch) They are inexpensive, slim, durable, and easy to use. The connectors are likewise, inexpensive and un-intrusive. If you want to pass 20 to 50 (ish) contacts from one place to another, an FPC is going to be the way to go, no crimping, no housings, all pick & place friendly. Nearly all of our displays use flex connectors on em, which means the boards we have on the other side have an FPC connector. We tend to use either 'push/pull' connectors, these tend to have top-contacts. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/molex/0541324062/24047840) Or we use flip-top connectors, these tend to have the contacts on the bottom. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/molex/0512964094/3044821) These work great... almost all of the time. But once in a while, the little ears on the side of the connector come loose. Or sometimes they break off! And if the little insert breaks at one of the small hinge pieces, the whole connector needs to be replaced. And these connectors are really annoying to rework. Sometimes we just scrap the whole board because its so difficult to repair. That's why we really liked the look of the One-Touch FPC connectors from Molex (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/molex/one-touch-ffc-fpc-easy-on-connectors) when we saw them pop up on the Digi-Key new products page (https://www.digikey.com/en/new-products). No yanking, twisting or pulling. They work just like other FPC connectors you're used to, with similar footprints and both right-angle (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/molex/2004850440/13588615) and vertical style available. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/molex/2004850540/13588607) FPC's can be inserted and will auto-lock in place. To remove, press on the button and remove the FPC. They are rated for 20 insertion and removal cycles, which should let the board make it through quite a few maintenance/rework/repair cycles! The Molex One-Touch FPC connectors are available in a few of the most popular sizes from 10 to 40 pins, in 0.5mm pitch (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/molex/one-touch-ffc-fpc-easy-on-connectors) and will make a very nice upgrade for your next product design where you've seen a history of broken or damaged FPC connectors. Super Fast RP2040 Testing with Teensy USB Host
We want to make lots of Feather RP2040s, so we can ship them to all the folks who are wanting them - so its important for us to make the test procedure super fast and simple. Thanks to Thach's intrepid work with USB, we can now use the Teensy 3.6's USB host support to 'drag and drop' a UF2 file over the USB interface to program it. At 100 KB/s, we can load our test program, verify all the hardware, and load a demo program all in under 2.5 seconds. The QT Py RP2040 is ready to go, and we ordered PCBs! We're also experimenting with different Trinkey designs, like one with a rotary encoder. EYE on NPI – Analog Devices AD5413 Digital-to-Analog Converter
We're living in a digital world, but eventually, every engineering project has to get down to the analog level. This week's EYE ON NPI is the Analog Devices AD5413 (https://www.digikey.com/short/pbqzchnr) is a 'swiss-army DAC' - a digital to analog converter that has a lot of extras to make it very easy for engineers who like to deal with bits and software, not analog components. Especially for those that need reliability and accountability in their electronic components! Usage is pretty simple, the protocol is a classic SPI transmission. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Peripheral_Interface) 32 bits form one transmission, with one start bit, 2 address bits, 5 register bits, 16 data bits and 8 CRC bits. The two address bits are a little like I2C, even though this is SPI - you can have four AD5413's on one SPI bus with the same CS pin. A little uncommon, but maybe useful in low-pin-count or chained connections. The 5 registers let you set the voltage or current output, modes like single-ended or split-supply, check diagnostics and chip ID. Slew-rate management and overshoot compensation is all configurable. There's even a die temperature monitor! Compare this to most basic DAC chips where you only 'write' to the DAC, there's no registers or read-back for status. With 14-bit voltage or current output, it's got high resolution and multi-project usage. It's designed specifically for industrial uses, (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/analog-devices/ad5413-digital-to-analog-converter) but we think it could also come in handy for analog electronics situations where you have biassing needs that require a split supply. Sure you could use a 0-3.3V DAC and then do a bunch of analog op-amp circuitry to get the range you want, but why add that complexity to your life? You'd have to deal with offset voltages and op-amp specifications when the AD5413 chip does it all! Reading through the datasheet, (https://www.analog.com/en/products/ad5413.html) it's clear ADI really thought about everything that could go wrong in the field. The whole product is designed from bottom up to make reliability and error reporting easy to manage. For many products, the high integration may make it the only chip that is required for the analog-front-end. That leaves you, the engineer, with more time to work on firmware, and less time re-spinning boards and spec'ing feedback paths and compensation capacitors.
