This week's EYE ON NPI product is under a lot of pressure to perform, and does the job with aplomb ... because this week's NPI is the Bosch BMP390L high-precision barometric pressure sensor. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/bosch-sensortec/bmp390l-pressure-sensor) This is the latest in a long line of excellent barometric pressure sensors from Bosch. Why we remember the BMP series back when it was a wee BMP085 - it seems like just about every year there's been an improvement: the BMP180, BMP280 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/2651/5604371) - still a very popular chip! And the BMP388 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/3966/9685338) With each generation comes an improvement in the pressure accuracy and precision. Earth's ambient barometric pressure changes with altitude - because air gets thinner the higher you go. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_pressure) There's a simple calculation that can be used to determine relative altitude changes and, if you know the sea level pressure (which usually doesn't vary much) you can use that to determine the absolute altitude. The better and more accurate your pressure readings, the better your altitude calculation output. Historically, these sensors could give you about 1 or 2 meter accuracy in altitude detection. This new version has a relative accuracy of 3 Pascals, which translates to about 25 cm. All in a tiny 2mm x 2mm package with both I2C and SPI interfaces. (https://www.bosch-sensortec.com/products/environmental-sensors/pressure-sensors/pressure-sensors-bmp390.html). This makes them great for use with drones: paired with a GPS and IMU, you'll get great absolute-positioning and improve altitude stability. Since barometric pressure is also used to perform weather predictions, this sensor is also excellent for any sort of ambient weather detection - just like the 'analog' barometers we had when I was growing up. Low pressure means air is moving in bringing clouds, storms and wind, high pressure means air is moving out so there will be fair weather without clouds. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressure_system) In addition to pressure, you also get temperature sensing, which is used to calibrate the pressure reading, but can also aid in environmental sensing. Thankfully, this chip is pin compatible with the BMP388, so we were easily able to put together a demo to test this out. We updated our GitHub repo for the BMP3XX series to add support for the BMP390 as well so you can use any Arduino-compatible to talk to this fancy new chip (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_BMP3XX). Bosch also has a C API that we found easy to integrate into any existing framework - you just provide the underlying I2C/SPI calls. Make a display for your display! Show off your message to the world. This guide will show how to set up and assemble a Matrix Portal and RGB Matrix display, then make a transparent pocket in your backpack, purse, or messenger bag to show it off. There is also a simple code example that displays your bmp images in slideshow fashion. Use the onboard buttons to switch between folders and play different messages, or pause on your favorite image. Set your bag down and the onboard accelerometer will sense that you're not moving and dim the screen to save battery life. You can also use any of the other Matrix Portal code samples to get you started. Get ready to have fun with all the features the Matrix Portal offers. Plug directly into the back of any HUB-75 compatible display (all the ones we stock will work) from 16x32 up to 64x64! Use the included screws to attach the power cable to the power plugs with a common screwdriver, then power it with any USB C power supply. (For larger projects, power the matrices with a separate 5V power adapter) Then code up your project in CircuitPython or Arduino, our Protomatter matrix library works great on the SAMD51 chipset, knowing that you've got the wiring and level shifting all handled. Here's what you get: ATSAMD51J19 Cortex M4 processor, 512KB flash, 192K of SRAM, with full Arduino or CircuitPython support ESP32 WiFi co-processor with TLS support and SPI interface to the M4, with full Arduino or CircuitPython support USB Type C connector for data and power connectivity I2C STEMMA QT connector for plug-n-play use of any of our STEMMA QT devices or sensors can also be used with any Grove I2C devices using this adapter cable JST 3-pin connector that also has analog input/output, say for adding audio playback to projects LIS3DH accelerometer for digital sand projects or detecting taps/orientation. GPIO breakouts including 4 analog outputs with PWM and SPI support for adding other hardware. Address E line jumper for use with 64x64 matrices (check your matrix to see which pin is used for address E! Two user interface buttons + one reset button Indicator NeoPixel and red LED Green power indicator LEDs for both 3V and 5V power 2x10 socket connector fits snugly into 2x8 HUB75 ports without worrying about 'off by one' errors. The Matrix Portal uses an ATMEL (Microchip) ATSAMD51J19, and an Espressif ESP32 Wi-Fi coprocessor with TLS/SSL support built-in. The M4 and ESP32 are a great couple - and each bring their own strengths to this board. The SAMD51 M4 has native USB so it can show up like a disk drive, act as a MIDI or HID keyboard/mouse, and of course bootload and debug over a serial port. It also has DACs, ADC, PWM, and tons of GPIO, so it can handle the high speed updating of the RGB matrix. Meanwhile, the ESP32 has secure WiFi capabilities, and plenty of Flash and RAM to buffer sockets. By letting the ESP32 focus on the complex TLS/SSL computation and socket buffering, it frees up the SAMD51 to act as the user interface. You get a great programming experience thanks to the native USB with files available for drag-n-drop, and you don't have to spend a ton of processor time and memory to do SSL encryption/decryption and certificate management. It's the best of both worlds! Comes with one fully-programmed and assembled MatrixPortal, preprogrammed with a rainbow digital sand demo for 32x64 LED matrices. Does not come with an RGB Matrix (use any HUB75 compatible matrix) or a USB type C power supply! A Raspberry Pi with PiTFT makes for a perfect ESP32 tester/programmer, we just have it run esptool and program in a self-test sketch to the ESP32, then read the output from over the USB serial connection. The self test checks all the pins are connected properly - not floating, not shorted - as well as the power supply voltages and battery charger functionality. Meanwhile, the ESP32 has secure WiFi capabilities, and plenty of Flash and RAM to buffer sockets. By letting the ESP32 focus on the complex TLS/SSL computation and socket buffering, it frees up the SAMD51 to act as the user interface. You get a great programming experience thanks to the native USB with files available for drag-n-drop, and you don't have to spend a ton of processor time and memory to do SSL encryption/decryption and certificate management. This weeks EYE on NPI is a sensor with a magnetic personality and we're really attracted to it...You guessed it - we're looking at the latest 3D magnetic field sensors from Melexis, the MLX90395 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/melexis/mlx90395-triaxis-magnetometer) These are some of the few high-magnetic-field sensors available, with up to +-120mT, that's 1200 Gauss! Incredible when you consider many of our common magnetometers for IMU usage top out at +-50 Gauss. The sensor also has high precision, with 16-bit output and built in over-sampling since magnetometers can be a little noisy. This sensor isn't great for IMU usage -- you'll want to stick to ~1 Gauss ranges for detecting Earth-level fields (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth%27s_magnetic_field). But it is excellent for magnetic field sensing such as that of a rare earth magnet. These chips are often used for 3D motion sensing of an object, when it has a magnet embedded in it. Especially joysticks and other user controls, you get the environmental robustness of optical with the cost of mechanical. Plus you get Z axis motion which optical doesn't like as much. With a little bit of math you can detect various motions, positions, twists and distances, all without any mechanical wear. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMbkFrGe5Ws) The sensor is available in both 50 and 120mT ranges, and in a few packages. We happen to like the QFN because it's pin-compatible with the earlier MLX90393 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4022). Note that it is not code-compatible with the '393. For interfacing you can use I2C or SPI, with free-running or one-shot modes. There's an interrupt pin for data ready checking, and a trigger pin if you want to trigger readings with GPIO rather than requesting over I2C/SPI. We whipped up a driver over the weekend for people to use to get readings with an over-sample filter to help smooth out the readings. (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_MLX90395) It's great to see revisions of sensors come out that give us better accuracy and precision, with wider ranges and lower prices and the MLX90395 does not disappoint. When ordering, check the last few digits of the product order code since there are two versions. The -10x series is 120mT and the -00x series is 50mT, you'll get a trade-off of precision and range. In this project we’re making a tombstone with Adafruit’s Matrix Portal! Guide: https://learn.adafruit.com/tombstone-matrix-portal We upgraded this foam tombstone with an RGB matrix so we can display animated graphics. The Matrix Portal is a plug-n-play dev board that makes these types of projects fairly easy. We designed and 3D printed these brackets so we can attach this to things like halloween props, picture frames or just some foam core. The 3D skull is just a bitmap sprite sheet that is animated using Circuit Python! With Circuit Python, you can animate sprites sheets and display them on the matrix. STEMMA Friend is your I2C pal - I2C scanner demo This little board is something we designed to help me with I2C device development. It's got a SAM21 on the back, and two I2C ports (one STEMMA QT and one Grove compatible JST) We imagine it will be sort of a Swiss Army Knife of I2C hacking. First demo is a simple I2C scanner. Just tells you what addresses ACK on the I2C bus. Handy for a first check of new designs! The MLX90395 is a new magnetometer from Melexis, its ultra high range, can do +-120mT (that's milliTesla not microTesla!) so its great for detecting strong magnetic fields.
