Remember before we had ringtones, when every phone had the same tones to alert you when a call came in? Incredible we lived like that, like savages! This week's EYE on NPI will make you feel the same way about audio alerts, with this awesome new product from PUI, the API-4260-LW150-2-R (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/pui-audio/api-4260-lw150-2-r-programmable-indicator) - it's a programmable audio alert speaker with MP3 support, and now we can't understand how we lived without it. Like our Sound FX boards (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2342) or CircuitPython (https://circuitpython.org/), it shows up as a 4 megabyte disk drive. We created our own custom EYE on NPI alert system by converting our WAV file to MP3 (to save space) using Audacity (https://learn.adafruit.com/microcontroller-compatible-audio-file-conversion). Then apply power and immediately the audio file starts looping! You can make the MP3 as long as you like, it just needs to fit in the 4MB disk drive space. The PUI Audio API-4260-LW150-2-R is an audio programmable indicator (API). Instead of using software that only works on operating systems and some devices, programming the API only requires adding .MP3 and .WAV files to any computer that supports USB thumb drives. A larger 4 MB storage size allows for longer files or sequential playback of multiple files, while the internal DAC allows for files with sampling rates up to 48 kHz. The 150 mm lead wires and mounting flanges allow for easy product integration while activating the API-4260-LW150-2-R is as simple as supplying 7 VDC to 24 VDC. With 100 dB of output at 10 cm (with a 1 kHz file recorded at 0 dB), users can employ the API in most ambient conditions. It complies with FCC Part 15 Class B, CE EN61000-6-1, and CE EN61000-6-3. The speaker is surprisingly loud and you can't beat the simplicity of this design. The price isn't that much higher than non-programmable audio alert systems, and you save a ton of time on integration and programming: you don't have to add MP3 playback to your product if it's just to play alerts. Thanks to the recent end of the MP3 patent pool, no licensing is required! (https://blog.adafruit.com/2017/04/18/is-mp3-now-patent-free-makerbusiness-technicolor/) What we like is the simplicity - simply power it and it does it's thing, so it can be integrated into any existing design without engineering re-work. We were curious on what's powering this thing so we opened it up. Inside we found an XL2576 5V switching regulator (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/texas-instruments/LM2576SX-ADJ-NOPB/LM2576SX-ADJ-NOPBCT-ND/3440107), a Winbond 25Q32 FLASH chip (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/winbond-electronics/W25Q32JVSSIQ-TR/W25Q32JVSSIQTR-ND/5803982), and a GZUT-MA2 'all in one MP3 player' chip. The chip output goes into an audio amplifier chip and to an 8ohm 0.5W speaker. Simple? Yes! Effective? Indeed! Using the plug-in MatrixPortal board we just released last week, we were able to make a sign that we brought to the Ruth Bader Ginsburg memorial vigil in NYC. The code displays three initials and then scrolls through an image of the Justice. We used the matrix magnetic feet to temporarily attach it to PT's bag, it was solid but easy to remove at the end of the night. This weeks EYE ON NPI gets REAL with the Intel RealSense LIDAR camera. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/intel/lidar-depth-camera-l515) This surprisingly powerful camera is easy to use and has both color and LIDAR depth output data. This makes it perfect for use in robotics, interactive art, 3D scanning...all sorts of projects where spatial sensing is required. It was announced in 2019 but didn't start shipping until a few months ago. Almost 10 years ago, Adafruit sponsored a Kinect-hacking bounty (https://blog.adafruit.com/2010/11/10/we-have-a-winner-open-kinect-drivers-released-winner-will-use-3k-for-more-hacking-plus-an-additional-2k-goes-to-the-eff/) to take an off-the-shelf video game accessory and turn it into a tool for anyone to use. The open source cross-platform drivers spawned hundreds of awesome projects, from the scientific and artistic, to the humanist and just plain silly (https://blog.adafruit.com/category/kinect-hacking/). With the Kinect discontinued (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinect), it's been a challenge to find a low cost alternative with an easy API. Until now! This little sensor is smaller than a tuna can and is a complete system with plug-and-play USB type C port for power and data. There's even an BMI085 IMU inside! (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/bosch-sensortec/BMI085/828-1083-1-ND/8634943) Intel RealSense's L515 is a type of solid state LiDAR technology-based depth camera. It uses LiDAR technology to scan a full scene allowing it to provide a point cloud with up to 23 million points of accurate depth data per second. It delivers consistent high depth accuracy throughout the supported range of the camera starting at 25 cm up to 9 meters. The accuracy of the L515 within its operational range is less than 20 mm Z error at maximum range. With an internal vision processor, L515 achieves motion blur artifact reduction by an exposure time of less than 100 ns (nanoseconds), ideal for capturing rapidly moving objects with minimal motion blur. Additionally, the 4 ms photon to depth latency allows real-time applications such as autonomous navigation. An RGB camera, gyroscope, and accelerometer round out the capabilities of the device for high-quality performance and use case flexibility. Smaller than a tennis ball, the Intel RealSense LiDAR Camera L515 has a diameter of 61 mm and is 26 mm in height. Weighing in at around 100 g (3.5 oz), it is designed to be easily situated on any prototype or attached to a tablet or phone for use in handheld room scanning or volumetric measurement applications. The L515 uses the same open source Intel RealSense SDK 2.0 as all other current-generation Intel RealSense Depth Cameras, which is platform independent, supporting Windows, Linux®, Android™, and macOS. This includes wrappers for many common platforms, languages and engines, including Python, ROS, C/C++, C#, Unity, Unreal, OpenNI, and NodeJS, with more being added constantly. Features Depth FOV (field of view): (H × V) 70°±2° x 55°±2° Depth resolution: Up to 1024 x 768 depth resolution (XGA resolution) Depth frame rate: 30 frames per second RGB frame rate: 30 frames per second RGB resolution: Up to 1920 x 1080 RGB resolution RGB FOV: (H x V) 70° ±3° x 43° ±2° Use environment: Indoor Inertial measurement unit: Bosch BMI085 Range: From 25 cm to 9 m range Connection type: USB-C® 3.1 gen 1 connection Dimensions: 61 mm diameter x 26 mm height Mounting: Two M3 x 0.5 mounting points and one 1/4 20 UNC thread mounting point It shows up in a few ways when you plug it into your computer. For integration into projects that use OpenCV or other camera-based inputs, you will see a dual UVC camera one called 'Depth' which is the LIDAR and one called 'RGB' which is a regular camera that you can overlay over the depth data. The Cameras are really high res, as well - 1024x768 depth resolution and 1920 x 1080 RGB resolution. Compare that to the Kinect's 640x480! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinect) We like that this sensor has industrial-quality sensing with engineer-and-maker-friendly development. No NDAs for datasheets, no signups for code - everything needed to get set up was shockingly convenient. (https://www.intelrealsense.com/get-started/) There's even a developer center (https://www.intelrealsense.com/developers/) with firmware upgrades, documentation, code samples, and a community group. There's a lot of support, so we think this is a great option for low cost depth sensing - a really fabulous NPI! Interested? Of course, you are! This week's EYE on NPI brings you Analog Devices' ADT7422 ultra-high accuracy and precision temperature sensor. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/analog-devices/adt7422-01-c-accurate-digital-temperature-sensor) With an astonishing ±0.1°C rated accuracy, you can use this sensor for real-time, calibration-free temperature sensing. A built-in I2C ADC interface provides 16-bit data, so you could use this sensor with any microcontroller or microprocessor and get 0.0078 °C resolution. And you can have up to 4 of these sensors on a single I2C bus by changing the I2C address pins A0/A1. ADT7422 is ADI's first ±0.1°C accurate temperature sensor that doesn't require any external circuitry for operation. It can easily replace more complex and expensive solutions that use alternative sensor technologies such as thermistors or RTDs. In addition, high-precision silicon sensors (ICs) are preferred options for a range of emerging applications in the healthcare market such as vital signs monitoring instruments for clinical and home use. Features ±0.1°C accuracy specification enables the end product to measure temperature with accuracy that was only possible for thermistors and RTDs Doesn't require external circuitry: smaller, lower power, and lower cost than older sensing technologies Fully tested and calibrated solution: doesn't require system calibration to achieve desired ±0.1°C measurement precision The highest accuracy of ±0.1°C comes is achievable between 25°C ~ 50°C. From −20°C to +105°C the accuracy is ±0.25°C and from −40°C to +125°C its ±0.50°C. For high temperature ranges, such as for use with scientific or food processes, you probably want to go with a PT100/PT1000 RTD sensor interface (https://www.analog.com/en/applications/technology/precision-sensor-interface/temperature-sensing/rtd.html) - for example verifying the temperature of a yogurt processing system, or a chemical heater. These sensors are more tuned towards human/bio measurement - for example a long-term temperature/health monitor that uses skin temperature, implanted glucose monitor, or an incubator - all places where you want very high accuracy! Interfacing with the chip is really simple, in fact we were able to borrow a lot of code from the ADT7410 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4089) library we wrote a year ago (https://github.com/adafruit?q=adt7410&type=&language=) and read out the temperature in both C and Python. Analog Devices also has 'pure C' drivers available on GitHub (https://github.com/analogdevicesinc/no-OS/tree/master/drivers/temperature/adt7420) We picked up one of Analog Device's dev boards. You can see a few interesting details like PCB slots to help keep the chip thermally isolated. There's also an Arduino-compatible Eval shield (https://www.analog.com/media/en/dsp-documentation/evaluation-kit-manuals/dc2026cfe.pdf) you can use to plug and play this sensor, but we found it works perfectly fine with plain 0.1" jumpers, just make sure you're giving it 3.3V for power!
