This all-in-one Metro design is Arduino UNO shaped so it works with shields, and features an iMX RT1011 500 MHz processor with 128K of RAM and QSPI memory. Even though it doesn't have a ton of RAM, it's got a nice speediness to it which we really dig. Here we are testing out CircuitPython 6 with the AirLift WiFi co-processor to get data from the interwebs and display it on an OLED. The OLED plugs right into the stemma QT connector so its really easy to get sensors and displays attached! This new Metro features the USB/WiFi/PSRAM capable ESP32 module - we are testing it with Arduino (there's a branch for ESP32S2 support and it seems to work OK!) You don't need to catch actual fairies, or chase down a real rainbow, but it will look as though you did! Decorate it with your favorite stickers and place it on your windowsill, and I guarantee you it will attract both rainbows and fairies into your life. And couldn't we all use more rainbows and fairies? Difficulty Level This is a very easy beginner project that's perfect to do with kids who are interested in learning about making things light up. The assembly is easy enough for kids as young as 4-5 (with a little help from an adult). Kids that young can also pick their own colors with the MakeCode drag-and-drop app, and slightly older school-aged kids will have fun coding the whole project by themselves. If you're a Grown Up Kid like me who still loves rainbows and fairies, this is a great place to get introduced to programmable lights, and you'll end up with a stunning piece of art when you're done. This week's EYE on NPI is a breath of fresh air! How do we know it's fresh? Cause we have a brand new Sensirion SGP40 air quality sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/sensirion/sgp40-d-r4) hooked up and ready to be our digital nose. We loooove Sensirion sensors, and we stock a whole bunch in the Adafruit shop. (https://www.adafruit.com/?q=sensirion&sort=BestMatch) They are renowned for their excellent prices and quality on temperature, humidity and gas sensors, so when we saw this pop up on Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/new, we quickly picked up a few pieces to check out. The SGP40 is Sensirion’s digital volatile organic compounds (VOC) sensor designed for easy integration into air treatment devices and air quality monitors. Based on Sensirion’s CMOSens® technology, the SGP40 offers a complete sensor system on a single chip and features a digital I²C interface, a temperature-controlled micro-hotplate, and a humidity-compensated indoor air quality signal. In combination with Sensirion’s powerful VOC algorithm, the sensor signal can be directly used to evaluate indoor air quality for applications such as triggering the gradual fan control of an air treatment device. Both the SGP40 chip and VOC algorithm feature unrivaled robustness in the final application over their lifetimes. Pushing the multi-pixel and multi-hotplate approach to the next level of individual control of each sensing element, the SGP40 enables a drastic reduction in power consumption, making it suitable for battery-driven applications as well. Sensirion’s state-of-the-art production process guarantees high reproducibility and reliability. Gas sensors are really interesting, they are all essentially resistive sensors, where the exposed silicon has a metal oxide layer (MOX) that is susceptible to ambient gasses. There's a heater element that you need to turn on, then wait till the silicon chunk can react with the air. The resistance changes with the amount of organic compounds in the air and you can measure the resistive differences. (https://www.sensirion.com/en/environmental-sensors/gas-sensors/) Now for many gas sensors, you basically get 4 pins: two for the heater, and two for the resistor. You have to power the heater, then use a resistor divider or op-amp to read the resistance and back calculate. There's no built-in calibration available. What we like about the SGPx0 series is that you don't need the power control or analog input. This isn't Sensirion's first gas sensor, we've already stocked the SGP30 for a while, (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/adafruit-industries-llc/3709/1528-2531-ND/8258468) and there are a few things we really liked about that sensor that are the same on the SGP40. First is a dead-simple I2C interface, you send it some commands, it responds with the normalized resistance data reading. No complex code required, it's trivial to port to any microcontroller. With a humidity sensor on the same microcontroller, you can feed the ambient RH to the SGP40 and it will improve the resistance calculation. Yow, this active terminator is really amazing, I'm able to run a 100 KHz I2C connection over a 100 foot CAT 5 cable we had lying around the house. Remember before we had ringtones, when every phone had the same tones to alert you when a call came in? Incredible we lived like that, like savages! This week's EYE on NPI will make you feel the same way about audio alerts, with this awesome new product from PUI, the API-4260-LW150-2-R (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/pui-audio/api-4260-lw150-2-r-programmable-indicator) - it's a programmable audio alert speaker with MP3 support, and now we can't understand how we lived without it. Like our Sound FX boards (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2342) or CircuitPython (https://circuitpython.org/), it shows up as a 4 megabyte disk drive. We created our own custom EYE on NPI alert system by converting our WAV file to MP3 (to save space) using Audacity (https://learn.adafruit.com/microcontroller-compatible-audio-file-conversion). Then apply power and immediately the audio file starts looping! You can make the MP3 as long as you like, it just needs to fit in the 4MB disk drive space. The PUI Audio API-4260-LW150-2-R is an audio programmable indicator (API). Instead of using software that only works on operating systems and some devices, programming the API only requires adding .MP3 and .WAV files to any computer that supports USB thumb drives. A larger 4 MB storage size allows for longer files or sequential playback of multiple files, while the internal DAC allows for files with sampling rates up to 48 kHz. The 150 mm lead wires and mounting flanges allow for easy product integration while activating the API-4260-LW150-2-R is as simple as supplying 7 VDC to 24 VDC. With 100 dB of output at 10 cm (with a 1 kHz file recorded at 0 dB), users can employ the API in most ambient conditions. It complies with FCC Part 15 Class B, CE EN61000-6-1, and CE EN61000-6-3.
