BNO080 or BNO085 with USB to Serial Cable

The BNO080 all-in-one 9 DoF IMU board is pretty nice - it can output accel/mag/gyro data as well as fuse sensor data together to give you Euler or quaternion orientation vectors. This sensor also has I2C, SPI and UART interfacing. UART means you can plug it into an FTDI cable directly and then run our BNO08x library to read the sensor data directly from a computer running Python! #adafruit #BNO080 #9dof Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

7 Color E-Ink Display demo with Raspberry Pi

We just got our 7-color E-Ink display from Waveshare and its really cool! There's python code for drawing bitmaps to the display from Python. We are looking to maybe make some projects with this kind of display. It seems to have the same exact 'pinout' as other E-Ink displays we've seen. There are 7 colors - white, black, red, orange, green, blue, purple and they're a little watercolor-y which is a nice effect. Images must be dithered because you cannot 'mix' colors in E-Ink displays, only display one of the 7 available colors per pixel. #raspberrypi #adafruit #eink Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE on NPI - Digilent Digital Discovery

This week's EYE on NPI is all about discovering new things - the Digilent Digital Discovery with High-speed adapter bundle (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/d/digilent/digital-discovery-with-high-speed-adapter-bundle). The Digilent Digital Discovery™ is a combined logic analyzer and pattern generator instrument that was created to be the ultimate embedded development companion. Digital Discovery was designed to optimize channels, speed, and portability. A small form factor facilitates easy storage and provides a whole suite of advanced features to allow you to debug, visualize, and simulate digital signals for most embedded projects. Digital inputs and outputs can be connected to a circuit using simple wire probes or breadboard wires; alternatively, the Digital Discovery High Speed Adapter and impedance-matched probes can be used to connect and utilize the inputs and outputs for more advanced projects. We're big fans of the affordable and powerful Digilent Analog Discovery (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4652) so when this logic-analyzer version popped up on https://digikey.com/new we snapped it up to check out. The specifications of what you get, for the price, are pretty amazing: 32-channel digital logic analyzer (1.2…3.3V CMOS, 8 channels at 800MS/s*, 16 channels at 400MS/s*, and 32 channels at 200MS/s) Digital Bus Analyzers (SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, Parallel) 16-channel pattern generator (1.2…3.3V CMOS, 100MS/s) 16-channel virtual digital I/O including buttons, switches, and LEDs – perfect for logic training applications A programmable power supply of 1.2…3.3V/100mA. The same voltage supplies the Logic Analyzer input buffers and the Pattern Generator input/output buffers, for keeping the logic level compatibility with the circuit under test. In particular, 32 channels of 200 MS/s logic analyzer input is rare to see in a sub-$1000 logic analyzer. 8 channels of 800 MS/s is also incredible, if you need that kind of speed, it's very hard to find an affordable analyzer. The wide/fast rates means this analyzer would be great for analyzing wide 8/16/24/32 address/data busses that normally you wouldn't have enough pins for. You could also check on fast protocols that normally aren't logic-analyzer friendly like RGB matrix and parallel TFT displays. Inside is a Xilinx SPARTAN FPGA and some memory for buffering signals. Like many logic analyzers, the Digital Discovery connects over USB and uses free desktop software for communication. The software in this case is called Waveforms, and is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux including Raspberry Pi (https://store.digilentinc.com/waveforms-download-only/). The same software is used for the Analog Discovery, so if you've got one of those, it'll be familiar. The software is powerful and has a lot of options and capabilities, so we definitely recommend going through some of the tutorials available on Digilent's site, like this nice walk-through on analyzing an old-school NES controller - here's a hint, it uses a serial latch! (https://blog.digilentinc.com/nes-controller-digital-discovery-waveforms/). What I use logic analyzers for is usually decoding I2C and SPI transfers while writing drivers. So I was happy to see a range of built in analyzers such as I2C, UART, CAN, even HDMI! To test it out, I connected the analyzer up to a BNO080 sensor I'm working on. I enabled I2C datalogging on the two initial pins. You can see the data stream with decoded hex values and read/write flags on initial addresses. You can also open up the events tab to see the data as a list with timestamps. The event data (or even the raw pulses) can then be exported to a spreadsheet. There's also a powerful scripting system. You can perform analysis, read data and decode protocols. (https://blog.digilentinc.com/decoding-vga-on-the-digital-discovery/) There's also a logic waveform generator you can script as a simulator for devices. (https://reference.digilentinc.com/learn/instrumentation/tutorials/hd44780_digital_discoverystart) We're pretty confident saying that for the price, this is the fastest, most powerful, capable and customizable logic analyzer you can get. And for students, it's super affordable and easy to store. Pair this up with an Analog Discovery for a full EE lab without giving up tons of desk space. Pick up a Digital Discovery from Digi-Key today at https://www.digikey.com/short/zfhz4r . You can pick up the version with high speed probe kit, or, if you aren't planning on using over 200 MS/s, the affordable basic version is at https://www.digikey.com/short/zfh997

We wanted to try out the Arduino Portenta that has arrived, and what better way than to test it out with our STEMMA QT boards? There's a 5 pin expansion port, which exposes the I2C pins and power+ground. Using our handy MKR to STEMMA cable https://www.adafruit.com/product/4483 we can plug in any of our 50+ sensors and displays. Braincraft HAT tester

Before we can start fabrication of a new design we need to design a tester - that way we can verify all the components and firmware are working they way they ought to. In this case, the Braincraft HAT https://www.adafruit.com/product/4374 has a TFT display, two microphones and two speaker outputs. We can use the speakers to test the mic's and vice versa by playing a sine wave through each speaker and then checking the sound level on the matching mic. We should see a big difference! the TFT is tested by having the text show up on it, and next up I'll add headphone jack and joystick tests. A quick but effective full-coverage test is essential to getting our high quality electronics out there. #adafruit #braincraft #machinelearning Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

N20 encoder motors!

The first step in a robotics project is to get a motor spinning. Once you've done that you quickly learn that not all motors go the same speed, even if they are the same part number! There are always variations that relate to voltage, environment, and manufacturing changes. This motor has a magnetic wheel and two hall effect sensors already attached. Using this motor is a breeze, and it's a nice small motor as well, in the 'standard' N20 size. EYE on NPI - Harting Single Pair Ethernet

This week's EYE on NPI is a new twist on an old familiar classic - cables and components from Harting (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/h/harting/t1-industrial-single-pair-ethernet-connector) for a new implementation of Ethernet connectivity called "Single Pair Ethernet" (https://www.single-pair-ethernet.com/en). We're interested in this because we have found that a lot of devices could benefit from a powered/wired network capability but Ethernet jacks are kinda huge and stiff - a single twisted pair cable could make wiring IoT devices easier and a lot less expensive because we don't need nearly as many conductors - wire is not cheap! - and we don't need a separate power adapter. Ethernet was invented in the 70's, and although it has been improved greatly, the underlying connector and cabling has not changed much. SPE is designed to be compatible with existing Ethernet installations, there's going to be a translator chip, but the upper transport layers like TCP/IP will be the same. We're actually big fans of Ethernet compared to WiFi - since there's physical access you don't have to deal with SSIDs, passwords, or enterprise management. (https://learn.adafruit.com/alltheiot-transports) That makes it ideal for IoT because one thing that's super annoying about IoT products is deploying and updating when the WiFi credentials change. While we do see some IoT devices with Ethernet, it's not as common as dropping in WiFi support. Perhaps, given that you still need to plug in power, SPE can make some headway into the industry. The specifications allow for up to 1000 meter long cables, 1 Gbps data rate and 50 W power transmission. (https://www.harting.com/SE/en-gb/single-pair-ethernet) Not all at once though, for example 1 GBit/s is only up to a distance of 40 meters. There's going to be some interdependence on those three stats that depend on the transmitter, receiver, and cabling quality. So there will probably still be 8-conductor Ethernet cabling for high speed + long distance configurations. In fact, when you look at the expected customer base from Harting, there's a lot of infrastructure, robotics/automation, and monitoring, but no home or office computing. The biggest customer right now for SPE is industrial automation - basically getting factories all wired over IoT. (https://www.single-pair-ethernet.com/en/applications) Factories don't want to depend on a wireless network - heck we don't even rely on WiFi when streaming our video show. SPE could be a nice upgrade from CAN (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN_bus) where you're still using 2 wires, but you get the benefit of Internet compatibility. We think another group of products that will be popular with SPE is IP cameras, especially once one big vendor makes SPE products. Every facility has dozens of security cameras, and by definition they're going to be really spread out over the building and grounds. That means the powering and wiring is going to be really annoying. With SPE, you can get power and data anywhere, over long distances. Another really nice thing that SPE consortium came up with - you know how that little tab on the RJ-45 cable always breaks off? The connectors for SPE range from basic to waterproof varieties, and all of them are designed for secure latching with durable metal tabs! Cool stuff to check out, specially for engineers working in automation and industrial technology, you'll want to take a peek at the SPE specifications. There's many companies that are part of the SPE design specification, so you can be confident it will be a well-supported new spec. Get started by picking up some cables and connectors at Digi-Key so that you can design SPE into your next product: visit https://www.digikey.com/short/zrvt71 to order Harting SPE connectors and have them in hand tomorrow! #EYEonNPI #DigiKey @DigiKey
