Pixel Dust on RGB Matrix displays
Our pixel dust library for Arduino was an easy port to these RGB matrices - this is a 32 x 64 matrix with a Feather M4 + RGB Matrix Featherwing for easy wiring. An accelerometer is used to determine the tilt and then some particle physics math draws the pixels as if they were reacting to gravity. Today we're trying out some pneumatics! These are air-pumps and valves that allow folks to make inflatable project. We start with a pump that pushes air into a balloon thru an open valve. Then we close the valve to verify the ballon stays inflated. Then we release the valve and the air empties out! Testing out BNO080 using CircuitPython and 3D Web Serial
This BNO080 chip is a lot like the popular BNO055 - it has built in sensor fusion and pops out quaternions for you ready made like a toaster strudel. We've found its super stable, and pretty easy to use! There's I2C and SPI support, our upcoming breakout has level shifting and everything to use it quickly. Bryan wrote a CircuitPython library so you'll be able to use it on any board. But how to test it out? Quaternions are not human-readable, so we're gonna use Melissa's awesome 3D model viewer, it reads quats over Web Serial and spins a bunny model around! EYE on NPI - ACS37002 electrically isolated current sensors
This week's EYE on NPI takes a hint from the advice we're all getting to keep physically isolated - the ACS37002 current sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/allegro-microsystems/acs37002-current-sensor) is a physically isolated sensor that takes advantage of the Hall effect to accurately measure power draw with full electrical isolation. Let's take a look! The ACS37002 is a 400kHz fully integrated Hall-Effect current sensor with very high accuracy, making it ideal for use in control loops of the most demanding power conversion applications. Current flows through the internal conductor coupling the magnetic field generated to the Hall sensor IC. As a result of no physical connection between the current and the IC, high voltage isolation is achieved. The current is sensed differentially by two Hall plates that subtract out interfering external common-mode magnetic fields. The sensor is factory-trimmed to provide high accuracy over the entire operating range without the need for customer programming. The sensor has an analog output and a reference output for signal integrity in noisy environments. A fast over-current fault output is included, having a user-configurable threshold via an analog input pin, providing short- circuit detection and enhanced system protection. The sensor also has four user-selectable gain options in the same device with two logic inputs without the need of extra components. This provides designers flexibility, and minimizes the overall bill-of-material for systems that need different current sensing ranges. At some point in an engineer's life, they have to measure the voltage, current or power of a circuit - for example, to make sure the circuit doesn't have a short or open, to verify that a battery is charging, or to adjust motor torque. Measuring current can be a little challenging - we can use low side sensing, where we stick a small resistance at the bottom of our circuit, and amplify the voltage difference from ground. (https://learn.adafruit.com/portable-solar-charging-tracker/analog-stuff) That makes a ground differential, which is often undesirable. Or you can have high side sensing, where you measure the difference between the highest voltage and a resistor drop. Sometimes this is challenging because the device you're measuring is much higher voltage than the circuitry doing the measurements, and the high common-mode makes that difficult. Or maybe you're measuring AC or high voltages and you want to keep your circuit isolated for safety! These Allegro current sensors are really nifty in that they are electrically isolated - there's no op amp connected to the sense resistor. How does this work? Instead of multiplying a voltage drop, we instead measure the magnetic field emitted by the current passing through the sense resistor. A hall effect sensor can measure the amount of field and then back-calculate the current passing by. This allow for very high voltage isolation. In the ACS37002 case, it's rated for 4.8kV isolation. Hall effect sensors are also very fast/responsive, so they can measure AC currents very easily, without introducing inductance like a current transformer would. The ACS712 (https://www.digikey.com/products/en/sensors-transducers/current-sensors/525?k=ACS712) is a famous chip from Allegro that was released a few years ago and is very popular for robotics, home automation and other high current measurement applications (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/allegro-microsystems/current-sensor-ics). This new sensor improves on the ACS712 - there's a 3.3V version of the ACS37002, the internal resistance is lower, the non-linearity is half as much, there's an adjustable range pinstrap and the current range is much higher - up to 66A! There's also a lot more configuration options, with gain ranging from 200 mV/A to 33 mV/A. This chip would make a great upgrade when you want better performance and comes in an easy-to-use SOIC 16 package. Want to upgrade your robot, scooter, or solar panel? 4" DPI Display HAT progress This project is somewhat slow going (you can see it on my desk in this old video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKv75lVAMsA) but we've gotten all the hand-wiring from this Raspberry Pi + DPI TFT display and turned it into a HAT. we have the display initializing and displaying - next up we have to tweak the sync signals, something seems to be a little bit off with them. We're so close! after that, we'll try adding a touch overlay. EYE on NPI - Würth Elektronik ShielDIY
This week's EYE on NPI is super new and shiny - literally! This shiny gridded metal sheet (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wurth-electronics/shieldiy-do-it-yourself-custom-shielding-cabinets) is a great new idea from Würth Elektronik (https://twitter.com/we_online), it's called ShielDIY and can be used to easily make custom RF shields or enclosures. Würth Elektronik has created a do-it-yourself custom shielding cabinet kit, the ShielDIY. The ShielDIY kit is a fast prototyping solution for board level shielding cabinets. The kit is made up of nickel silver sheet with a thickness of 0.2 mm. The sheets feature lines carved every 5 mm for easy bending and cutting. To build a prototype, cut along the carved lines before bending to obtain the desired shape. OK, this NPI is definitely one of those "OMG I didn't know that existed, now I need it" type items. If you're building sensitive or noisy projects, with lots of EMI from speakers, magnetics, motors, or RF, you probably know that a grounded metal cabinet will greatly help reduce electrical noise, you're building a little Faraday cage around your electronics! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage) You see these on various products Digi-Key stocks, especially radio modules. For example, the Pi 4 has a metal tin around the WiFi chip section to help reduce emissions. (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4296). When you have a popular product, its easy to get a custom tin made. When you're prototyping or testing, especially at the RF stage, something like the ShielDIY can help you speed the process by letting you try different tin shapes and sizes. The metal sheet has grid slices every 5mm so as long as you're cool with metric you should be able to make a wide range of sizes. Cut with metal snips or metal-friendly-scissors. You can then solder together the folded sides and solder the whole thing to the ground plane of your PCB. Super easy and effective! If you do any RF testing, or RF work, you'll definitely want to have a sheet of this stuff in your toolbox for less than a Tubman. You can order from Digi-Key today and have it tomorrow! Epoxy resin, alcohol inks, sand, and seashells come together to make a magical luminous ocean experience for your wall or desk. Each piece you create will come out unique, colorful, and beautiful. The electronics assembly is pretty simple - the only soldering you'll need to do is stacking and assembling the Feather and FeatherWing. The LED matrix plugs into the FeatherWing and into the wall using connectors, so doesn't need to be soldered at all. Epoxy resin is tricky by nature. Temperature, humidity, and dust need to be managed with any resin project. However, as resin projects go, I've found this to be about the easiest one I've ever done -- and also the hardest to mess up. Stray bubbles or dust motes in your resin actually add depth and interest to this particular project - more bubbles make the ocean waves look more realistic! And as you'll see, mixing and pouring all the pretty colors is incredibly satisfying. The software and coding requires a little bit of setup if you haven't used CircuitPython before. Once you're set up, you can copy and paste our code and images or dig in and customize with your own artwork. EYE on NPI - Display Visions DOGS102N-6 Display
This week's EYE on NPI is going to the dogs ... Display Visions DOG Mini Graphic LCDs! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/electronic-assembly-gmbh/compact-low-power-mini-graphic-lcd) You know we can't resist checking out new displays - we've always loved adding graphical interfaces to our projects and products. From the Digi-Key highlights page: DISPLAY VISIONS' EA-DOGS102 series graphic LCDs are available in an FSTN positive transflective, STN negative transmissive, and FSTN positive reflective version. These displays have a 2.54 mm pitch and can be soldered directly or plugged into socket strips. Therefore, cumbersome gluing procedures, the need for designing a special mounting device, and error-prone cable connections that may lose contact are no longer a concern. This LCD family was designed for use in German industry and will have an availability of 15+ years. The extremely efficient ratio of external dimensions to the active display area helps in designing very compact devices. Furthermore, its low-power use [single supply 2.5 V to 3.3 V (typically 250 µA)] makes it ideal for handheld applications. We've seen some DOG displays before, they were used in the Pimoroni Display-o-Tron HAT (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2694) - you can tell these by their distinctive mounting style. Unlike common LCD modules which are pretty chunky (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1447), these are slim and svelte with direct mounting pins that are bonded onto the LCD glass so you can selective solder them without extra hand-labor. Note that they don't come with back-lights by default - so if you want back-lighting you'll need to get separate LED modules. These LCD's also don't have built in touch-screens, but you can get a resistive overlay to use like any other resistive touchscreen (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/display-visions/EA-TOUCH102-1/1481-1201-ND/4896840) These displays happen to have a UC1701 controller chip, for which we found a couple easy-to-use Arduino code libraries. (https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=008830049033802121810%3Azgsyidwem5w&q=uc1701) We loaded one of the u8g2 examples onto an ItsyBitsy and had it displaying in a few minutes! You just need SPI plus a few controller pins - no high voltage booster required. There's a few options for display type, If you're not sure of which one you want, there's a little simulator application available from the EA website (https://www.lcd-module.com/treiber-tools-updates/tools.html) that lets you select different types (e.g. blue dye, black+white transflective) and backlight LEDs. There's also a few demo graphics you can use to gauge what text and graphics will look like on the display.
