If you want to run an I2C bus over very long wires, at high speeds, this active terminator could prove very useful! Stick it on the end of your long bus and it will automatically detect when the pullups are activated (e.g. SDA/SCL are floating) and yank them up. You can see here it turns a sawtoothy 800KHz bus into a beautiful square wave! The first step in a robotics project is to get a motor spinning. Once you've done that you quickly learn that not all motors go the same speed, even if they are the same part number! There are always variations that relate to voltage, environment, and manufacturing changes. This motor has a magnetic wheel and two hall effect sensors already attached. Using this motor is a breeze, and it's a nice small motor as well, in the 'standard' N20 size. This week's EYE on NPI is a new twist on an old familiar classic - cables and components from Harting (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/h/harting/t1-industrial-single-pair-ethernet-connector) for a new implementation of Ethernet connectivity called "Single Pair Ethernet" (https://www.single-pair-ethernet.com/en). We're interested in this because we have found that a lot of devices could benefit from a powered/wired network capability but Ethernet jacks are kinda huge and stiff - a single twisted pair cable could make wiring IoT devices easier and a lot less expensive because we don't need nearly as many conductors - wire is not cheap! - and we don't need a separate power adapter. Ethernet was invented in the 70's, and although it has been improved greatly, the underlying connector and cabling has not changed much. SPE is designed to be compatible with existing Ethernet installations, there's going to be a translator chip, but the upper transport layers like TCP/IP will be the same. We're actually big fans of Ethernet compared to WiFi - since there's physical access you don't have to deal with SSIDs, passwords, or enterprise management. (https://learn.adafruit.com/alltheiot-transports) That makes it ideal for IoT because one thing that's super annoying about IoT products is deploying and updating when the WiFi credentials change. While we do see some IoT devices with Ethernet, it's not as common as dropping in WiFi support. Perhaps, given that you still need to plug in power, SPE can make some headway into the industry. The specifications allow for up to 1000 meter long cables, 1 Gbps data rate and 50 W power transmission. (https://www.harting.com/SE/en-gb/single-pair-ethernet) Not all at once though, for example 1 GBit/s is only up to a distance of 40 meters. There's going to be some interdependence on those three stats that depend on the transmitter, receiver, and cabling quality. So there will probably still be 8-conductor Ethernet cabling for high speed + long distance configurations. In fact, when you look at the expected customer base from Harting, there's a lot of infrastructure, robotics/automation, and monitoring, but no home or office computing. The biggest customer right now for SPE is industrial automation - basically getting factories all wired over IoT. (https://www.single-pair-ethernet.com/en/applications) Factories don't want to depend on a wireless network - heck we don't even rely on WiFi when streaming our video show. SPE could be a nice upgrade from CAN (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN_bus) where you're still using 2 wires, but you get the benefit of Internet compatibility. We think another group of products that will be popular with SPE is IP cameras, especially once one big vendor makes SPE products. Every facility has dozens of security cameras, and by definition they're going to be really spread out over the building and grounds. That means the powering and wiring is going to be really annoying. With SPE, you can get power and data anywhere, over long distances. Another really nice thing that SPE consortium came up with - you know how that little tab on the RJ-45 cable always breaks off? The connectors for SPE range from basic to waterproof varieties, and all of them are designed for secure latching with durable metal tabs! Cool stuff to check out, specially for engineers working in automation and industrial technology, you'll want to take a peek at the SPE specifications. There's many companies that are part of the SPE design specification, so you can be confident it will be a well-supported new spec. Embed a strand of fairy lights inside, and set it on top of a Circuit Playground Express. The onboard NeoPixel lights provide a lovely, flickery torch effect. This gorgeous lamp glows from the inside out. Add a piece of shiny copper tape to the base, and you can change light modes with a touch of your finger. Capacitive touch control is just like magic! We've provided a simple 3d printable base model, or you can get creative and design your own display mount. We made ours look like Viking Dragon Ships to go with our Dragon Wall Sconce, and now we sail into sleep at night with fiery dragonish gargoyles watching over us. Difficulty Electronics Build: Easy This is a great beginner project if you're new to electronics. The wiring is really simple, and there's no soldering required. Software / Coding: Easy We've provided code you can drag-and-drop to program your Circuit Playground using MakeCode, Microsoft's free online coding program. It's easy to customize our code or come up with your own. Physical Build: Challenging Making the resin block is the hardest part of this project. There are a lot of ways it can go wrong, and epoxy resin can get expensive when your first or second pour doesn't go right. Our pixel dust library for Arduino was an easy port to these RGB matrices - this is a 32 x 64 matrix with a Feather M4 + RGB Matrix Featherwing for easy wiring. An accelerometer is used to determine the tilt and then some particle physics math draws the pixels as if they were reacting to gravity. Today we're trying out some pneumatics! These are air-pumps and valves that allow folks to make inflatable project. We start with a pump that pushes air into a balloon thru an open valve. Then we close the valve to verify the ballon stays inflated. Then we release the valve and the air empties out! This BNO080 chip is a lot like the popular BNO055 - it has built in sensor fusion and pops out quaternions for you ready made like a toaster strudel. We've found its super stable, and pretty easy to use! There's I2C and SPI support, our upcoming breakout has level shifting and everything to use it quickly. Bryan wrote a CircuitPython library so you'll be able to use it on any board. But how to test it out? This week's EYE on NPI takes a hint from the advice we're all getting to keep physically isolated - the ACS37002 current sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/allegro-microsystems/acs37002-current-sensor) is a physically isolated sensor that takes advantage of the Hall effect to accurately measure power draw with full electrical isolation. Let's take a look! The ACS37002 is a 400kHz fully integrated Hall-Effect current sensor with very high accuracy, making it ideal for use in control loops of the most demanding power conversion applications. Current flows through the internal conductor coupling the magnetic field generated to the Hall sensor IC. As a result of no physical connection between the current and the IC, high voltage isolation is achieved. The current is sensed differentially by two Hall plates that subtract out interfering external common-mode magnetic fields. The sensor is factory-trimmed to provide high accuracy over the entire operating range without the need for customer programming. The sensor has an analog output and a reference output for signal integrity in noisy environments. A fast over-current fault output is included, having a user-configurable threshold via an analog input pin, providing short- circuit detection and enhanced system protection. The sensor also has four user-selectable gain options in the same device with two logic inputs without the need of extra components. This provides designers flexibility, and minimizes the overall bill-of-material for systems that need different current sensing ranges. At some point in an engineer's life, they have to measure the voltage, current or power of a circuit - for example, to make sure the circuit doesn't have a short or open, to verify that a battery is charging, or to adjust motor torque. Measuring current can be a little challenging - we can use low side sensing, where we stick a small resistance at the bottom of our circuit, and amplify the voltage difference from ground. (https://learn.adafruit.com/portable-solar-charging-tracker/analog-stuff) That makes a ground differential, which is often undesirable. Or you can have high side sensing, where you measure the difference between the highest voltage and a resistor drop. Sometimes this is challenging because the device you're measuring is much higher voltage than the circuitry doing the measurements, and the high common-mode makes that difficult. Or maybe you're measuring AC or high voltages and you want to keep your circuit isolated for safety! These Allegro current sensors are really nifty in that they are electrically isolated - there's no op amp connected to the sense resistor. How does this work? Instead of multiplying a voltage drop, we instead measure the magnetic field emitted by the current passing through the sense resistor. A hall effect sensor can measure the amount of field and then back-calculate the current passing by. This allow for very high voltage isolation. In the ACS37002 case, it's rated for 4.8kV isolation. Hall effect sensors are also very fast/responsive, so they can measure AC currents very easily, without introducing inductance like a current transformer would. The ACS712 (https://www.digikey.com/products/en/sensors-transducers/current-sensors/525?k=ACS712) is a famous chip from Allegro that was released a few years ago and is very popular for robotics, home automation and other high current measurement applications (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/allegro-microsystems/current-sensor-ics). This new sensor improves on the ACS712 - there's a 3.3V version of the ACS37002, the internal resistance is lower, the non-linearity is half as much, there's an adjustable range pinstrap and the current range is much higher - up to 66A! There's also a lot more configuration options, with gain ranging from 200 mV/A to 33 mV/A. This chip would make a great upgrade when you want better performance and comes in an easy-to-use SOIC 16 package. Want to upgrade your robot, scooter, or solar panel? 4" DPI Display HAT progress This project is somewhat slow going (you can see it on my desk in this old video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKv75lVAMsA) but we've gotten all the hand-wiring from this Raspberry Pi + DPI TFT display and turned it into a HAT. we have the display initializing and displaying - next up we have to tweak the sync signals, something seems to be a little bit off with them. We're so close! after that, we'll try adding a touch overlay.
