Paper Craft Crystal Gem LED NeoPixel Strand DIY Tutorial

Full tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/no-solder-papercraft-crystal-light-strand These crystal gemstones are made from iridescent cellophane wrap (from the craft store, like you find in fancy gift baskets) that has been crinkled up and then run through a laminating machine. They can be cut by hand with a utility knife, or cut out on a vinyl cutting machine like a Cricut or Silhouette. Then they are folded into shape, tab-in-slot style, and finally we add a small piece of iridescent cellophane inside to mimic the crystalline occlusions. This is surprisingly convincing -- they look like the real thing, but are light and flexible -- perfect for cosplay applications or just stringing up around the house. The crystal patterns in this guide are designed to slot perfectly around Adafruit's NeoPixel Dot strand. Each strand has 20 lights, and we've included crystal patterns in varying shapes and sizes, so you can customize the look of your strand. EYE on NPI - Power-Only USB Type-C(R) Receptacle

This week's EYE on NPI features a product I've been looking for - a USB Type C connector that is designed for power-only applications. CUI just released one, with a nice SMT/THM mixed package that's easy to solder and rework... and the price is nice! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/cui-devices/power-only-usb-type-c-receptacle) (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/cui-devices/UJC-HP-3-SMT-TR/2223-UJC-HP-3-SMT-CT-ND/12173367) As an ideal solution for power only applications, CUI Devices’ UJC-HP-3-SMT-TR is a 6-pin USB Type-C receptacle delivering up to 60 W of power with a 3 A current rating and 20 VDC voltage rating. Housed in a surface-mount package, this USB Type-C connector removes the data transfer pins to create a more cost-effective option for designs where power or charging is the sole function. The UJC-HP-3-SMT-TR is further compatible with standard USB Type-C plugs, taking the accessibility and simplified design integration of the widely adopted Type-C connection and applying it to power-only applications. USB Type C is a very capable & advanced interconnect system that has connector, cable, signal and software specifications. USB C is defined by a specific shape of USB connector and was designed to take that universality a step further by being the one connector for almost anything including data, power/charging, video and audio. The connector is also reversible, it has no up or down orientation! While USB C does make some things a lot easier, there is also lots of confusion and uncertainty surrounding it. There are different voltages and current limits, and a TON of pins - XKCD even made fun of the complex Type C pinout in a recent comic (https://xkcd.com/2317) For most folks who have only recently gotten a handle on the complexities of USB with 4 pins and differential signaling, the 24 pins of Type C can be a little scary. The connectors are also significantly more expensive and difficult to solder - 24 pins in a reversible case is a lot of pins! For example here is a full-pin version of the same connector style (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/molex/1054500101/WM12856CT-ND/5843891) Its about $1.25 in quantity and has pins underneath the connector! Now compare that to this connector (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/cui-devices/UJC-HP-3-SMT-TR/2223-UJC-HP-3-SMT-CT-ND/12173367) which is under $0.50 in quantity. That's a big BOM cost change! Of course, its less expensive because of the simpler contact structure - that trade-off means you can only use this connector for power applications, there are no USB data lines at all! The only lines that are available are VBUS, GND, and the CC1 and CC2 lines. Don't leave those CC lines floating! They are required for setting the voltage/current draw of the sink. Use two 5.1K resistors from each pin to ground to indicate a 5V. A common misunderstanding is that you can use one resistor - nope! This way the device clearly defines itself as a 5V sink. EYE ON NPI - u-blox C099-F9P Application Board for ZED-F9P GNSS RTK Module

This weeks' EYE on NPI is more like EYE to the SKY, as we feature u-blox's low cost GNSS RTK eval/application boards. Digi-Key has plenty of stock of u-blox ZED-F9P eval boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/u/u-blox/c099-f9p-application-board), which are a fully-featured RTK application boards with a GNSS RTK module, WiFi module, Arduino-compatible headers, multiple power options including LiPoly charging, and easy-to-use configuration software. The price is under $250, bringing a multi-node RTK setup within many engineer's budgets. (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/u-blox/C099-F9P-2/672-1110-ND/9817935) RTK is a pretty interesting technology that has developed over the last few years, but even we had to do some research to understand it. GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satelite System, which for most people is synonymous with GPS - the American GNSS. There are some other, newer, GNSS's like GLONASS (Russian) and Galileo (EU). Now, GPS and GNSS receivers are super common and inexpensive, you can pick up a fully-integrated GPS module like the SAM-M8Q (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/u-blox/SAM-M8Q-0-10/672-1054-2-ND/7393574) for about $13, it even comes with an tuned path antenna. These little receivers work very well for outdoor location identification, and they work anywhere in the world. There is one drawback that folks bump into when using GNSS - and that is the precision of location. Even if you are in the middle of a field, and you've got a perfect view of the clear sky, GNSS accuracy is around 3 meters / 10 feet. Which is pretty good for a $13 module, and for general navigation and asset tracking, 10 feet is a fair tradeoff. For some applications, like autonomous cars or agricultural equipment, surveying, or drones - 10 feet won't cut it. If the location is jumping around, it could cause the machinery to veer off course, smashing into a building or cliff or human! For these high-tech use cases, we need to boost the GPS accuracy and precision, which we can do by adding RTK. RTK stands for Real Time Kinematics, a way of precisely determining location and orientation ... in real time! How it works is pretty amazing. We already know how GNSS works - by getting timecoded signals from 3 or more satellites that circle the globe and comparing the time code deltas, we can triangulate where were are approximately on earth. Now say we have two GNSS receivers somewhat close to each other, say within a mile. Each one is going to receive pretty similar signals, and will see the same satellites. The receivers can then perform calculations on the phase of the same signal they received, and compare the differences between them. The differences will be incredibly slight, and the measurement requires good quality sensing, because we're measuring the signal of a 1.5GHz transmission from literally space. That precision sensing is why the price of RTK has historically been in the thousands of $ to get a setup, especially since you need one base station and one+ rovers. Thanks to u-blox's engineering and market skill, they've gotten a full development kit that can be used as a standalone base station or rover for under $250! (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/u-blox/C099-F9P-2/672-1110-ND/9817935) But, if you're aware of how to best use RTK, there's some amazing use cases that have been waiting for this kind of precision orientation and tracking capability. So, if you've ever wanted to play with RTK, there's no better application board to start with, and you can pick one up today at Digi-Key, just search for 672-1110-ND on digikey.com Don't forget you'll need two boards (unless there happens to be a public RTK base station somewhere nearby you). Make Python powered protest signs ... Black Lives Matter / Say Their Names ...

We made a BLACK LIVES MATTER light up protest sign for night time use that works and looks great using a 64x32 RGB LED Matrix, Adafruit Feather, and CircuitPython. These panels are normally used to make video walls, here in New York we see them on the sides of busses and bus stops, to display animations or short video clips. You can make them portable and informative. The matrix can also display the names of Black people killed by the police which the Washington Post compiled in to a database which is a datasource on GitHub. See: saytheirnames.glitch.me

EYE ON NPI - MOLEX Cable Creator

We've spend a lot of EYE ON NPI weeks on the niftiest sensors, microcontrollers, and wireless eval boards. But every engineer knows that your design can have the coolest tech in it, and then fail because of a bad mechanical connection. Cabling and connectors are not as sexy as a Bluetooth chip, but they are essential to any design - and a poor quality cable may not fail for weeks or months, bringing the whole product down for want of a single bad crimp! That's why we were psyched to see this new service from Digi-Key and Molex (a juggernaut in the connector industry!) called Molex Custom Cable Creator. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/m/molex/custom-cable-creator). This is awesome because there's a frustrating 'dead zone' in cable needs, where you can't use an off the shelf cable, and you're not ready to have a cable factory make 10,000 pieces. Even for only a single cable, crimping and crafting cables is a challenge (say that 5 times fast!). You have to have the right crimp tool, which can be surprisingly expensive and difficult to use, and you have to be super careful not to nick the wires - where strain can build and crack the wire when moved. The Molex Cable Creator allows users to choose from many different product connector families, circuit sizes, wire gauges, UL styles, cable lengths and more. To meet the needs of unique applications, the proprietary pinout configurator provides options to select individual connections and wire color. Popular Molex series like Pico Blade, Micro-Fit, Mini-Fit, Milli-Grid, Pico Clasp, Nano-Fit, Ultra-Fit, KK 254, DuraClik, Mega-Fit, Clikmate and so many more Custom Cables can be created by your request. The new Custom Cable Creator is a revolutionary tool poised to dramatically help wiring harness designers develop solutions to meet their exact needs. The amount of customization now available, customers can easily design their own pinout for the wires and greatly simplify cable routing and management. Let's go through the process ourselves. First up visit the Custom Cable Creator here (https://www.molex.com/molex/custom-cable-creator/digikey/) We're going to make a matching connector for a barcode scanner we stock on Adafruit (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1203). The scanner connects using an 11 pin Molex cable with PicoBlade connector - 1.25mm pitch. Start by selecting the Side A connector, there's over a dozen choices from 6.7mm pitch down to 1.0mm pitch. We picked PicoBlade 1.25mm. Then select the number of rows and circuits - in this case single row, 11 circuits. You can pick the cable end type, either receptacle or plug. In this case we want a receptacle so it plugs into the scanner. The image will update based on your choice so you have a good sense of what you've got selected! Next, pick the cable length and wire gauge. I want a cable about 6" long, that's 150mm. The scanner doesn't draw a lot of power so 28 AWG is fine, that will make it flexible. Onto the other side of the cable - since the wire gauge was set in the previous step, you can't go with any connector you please - only some will let you connect the gauge wires. Another option is...no connector! Say you want to solder this to a perfboard, choose "Single ended" to get bare wires at the end. In this case, I want to connect the 4 USB pin wires to my single board computer. The connector will fit into 0.1" header so I choose KK 254 which gives me a 0.1" receptacle at the end. In this case I want 4 circuits for the 4 data pins Here is also where you pick pinout configuration and cable colors. Since we're only using 4 wires, we want to make sure they're inserted into the right slots. In this case, we'll be populating slots 1 through 4. I'll set the colors to match the USB standard, that's always a nice touch. To wrap up, pun intended, we pick the cable bundling or wrap. I would do these for thicker cables, woven braid in particular is my favorite kind of covering! Now we finish placing the order. Cables are super customized so the sample cost won't be automatically calculated. Someone will email you to complete the order and pricing for a sample and then for larger quantities. If you don't need a complex cable, there may be an off-the shelf one available. If you're not a fan of wire crimping, you can get pre-crimped wires for standard Molex connectors, in a variety of colors and lengths.
