This week's EYE on NPI is going to the dogs ... Display Visions DOG Mini Graphic LCDs! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/e/electronic-assembly-gmbh/compact-low-power-mini-graphic-lcd) You know we can't resist checking out new displays - we've always loved adding graphical interfaces to our projects and products. From the Digi-Key highlights page: DISPLAY VISIONS' EA-DOGS102 series graphic LCDs are available in an FSTN positive transflective, STN negative transmissive, and FSTN positive reflective version. These displays have a 2.54 mm pitch and can be soldered directly or plugged into socket strips. Therefore, cumbersome gluing procedures, the need for designing a special mounting device, and error-prone cable connections that may lose contact are no longer a concern. This LCD family was designed for use in German industry and will have an availability of 15+ years. The extremely efficient ratio of external dimensions to the active display area helps in designing very compact devices. Furthermore, its low-power use [single supply 2.5 V to 3.3 V (typically 250 µA)] makes it ideal for handheld applications. We've seen some DOG displays before, they were used in the Pimoroni Display-o-Tron HAT (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2694) - you can tell these by their distinctive mounting style. Unlike common LCD modules which are pretty chunky (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1447), these are slim and svelte with direct mounting pins that are bonded onto the LCD glass so you can selective solder them without extra hand-labor. Note that they don't come with back-lights by default - so if you want back-lighting you'll need to get separate LED modules. (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/display-visions/EA-LED39X41-W/1481-1152-ND/4896791). These LCD's also don't have built in touch-screens, but you can get a resistive overlay to use like any other resistive touchscreen (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/display-visions/EA-TOUCH102-1/1481-1201-ND/4896840) These displays happen to have a UC1701 controller chip, for which we found a couple easy-to-use Arduino code libraries. (https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=008830049033802121810%3Azgsyidwem5w&q=uc1701) We loaded one of the u8g2 examples onto an ItsyBitsy and had it displaying in a few minutes! You just need SPI plus a few controller pins - no high voltage booster required. There's a few options for display type, If you're not sure of which one you want, there's a little simulator application available from the EA website (https://www.lcd-module.com/treiber-tools-updates/tools.html) that lets you select different types (e.g. blue dye, black+white transflective) and backlight LEDs. There's also a few demo graphics you can use to gauge what text and graphics will look like on the display. This week's EYE ON NPI is buggin' out - with TDK Invensense's SmartBug Multi-Sensor Wireless Module! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/invensense/smartbug-multi-sensor-wireless-module) Much like our recent product, the Adafruit CLUE (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4500) we're seeing more and more chip companies create 'showcase' hardware boards with a large number of sensors, and a wireless setup for quick demos. TDK did a particularly nice job on this one, its both adorable and powerful! From the product description page: (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/i/invensense/smartbug-multi-sensor-wireless-module) This module combines six sensors, a powerful wireless (BLE) MCU, seven algorithm-driven features, and a rechargeable battery all in a small ladybug enclosure. It also comes with the option of an add-on board that includes a Wi-Fi module, an SD card slot, and an ultrasonic sensor from TDK. It is the go-to module for quick and easy access to reliable and smart sensor data. The data from each sensor and algorithm can be accessed out-of-box without the need for any programming, soldering, or extra modifications. This makes it a perfect catalyst for IoT product developers, algorithm developers, and sensor data enthusiasts to better understand real application signatures, environment variations, and multi-sensor/algorithm behaviors. I like that they went with a cute shape for this board, its a plastic ladybug, but is easy to open up with only 3 simple screws. Inside is a custom PCB with micro USB power/data, a Nordic nRF52840, 290mAh battery, and a whole mess-load of sensors. There's also an expansion port on the side, which you can use to plug in more sensors like a ToF range finder, two buttons, SD card storage and an ESP32 WiFi module. (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/tdk-invensense/MD-42688-P-XB/1428-MD-42688-P-XB-ND/12525334) The nRF52840 is the main processor, and provides the sensor connectivity, USB interface and of course Bluetooth LE - its one of our favorite processors, and hey it could be reprogrammed to run CircuitPython which would be super cool if someone made a board definition..hint, hint. In the SmartBug is 5 sensors that cover motion and environment: ICM-42688 triple axis accelerometer plus gyroscope (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/tdk-invensense/ICM-42688-P/1428-ICM-42688-PCT-ND/11679713) ICP-10101 barometric pressure (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/tdk-invensense/ICP-10101/1428-1143-1-ND/9555755) AK09940 triple-axis magnetometer (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/akm-semiconductor-inc/AK09940/974-1191-1-ND/10231690) SHTC3 humidity + temperature sensor (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/sensirion-ag/SHTC3/1649-1100-1-ND/8628149), The real star quality of this product is the surprisingly well-done Windows 10 application. As you may know, Windows 10 added native BLE support, so it's possible to write desktop apps to communicate with sensors. You can find the app in the app store, so there's no popups warning you about running unknown apps. Once installed, you can run it, select BLE as the transport and connect in a jiffy. The app has many nice features. The plotter is the first one we tried. It's exactly how you'd imagine, with selectable data rates - you can have multiple sensors at once. Next we tried the activity monitor - this one implements tap detection, plus pedometer/activity sensing using the IMU. What's nice is that since this board is wireless you can put it in your pocket to test the pedometer! Finally, we looked at the HVAC demo that uses the pressure sensor to detect when filters in an AC unit need replacing. I liked the realistic product demos here, for example I didn't realize that was a use case for pressure sensors. TDK / InvenSense is famous for their IMU's - they're used in a wide range of motion-activated video game systems and VR such as the Nintendo Wii and Oculus Rift. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InvenSense) So it's no surprise they have a really sweet IMU demo showing of their fusion algorithms. These are now often built into the chips themselves, running a proprietary Kalman-like filter that will spit out quaternions or Euler angles. Again, this is a great demonstration of the wireless connectivity - you can pick up the ladybug and twist and twirl it around to see the rock-stable fusion output. All in all, it's a nice bit of kit, at a good price! This week's EYE on NPI focuses in on Infrared thermal sensing, a very 'hot' market right now (ha ha). Amphenol has just released a new low cost IR temperature sensor that is optimized for human temperature reading - the ZTP-148SRC1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/amphenol-advanced-sensors/ztp-148src1-non-contact-ir-temperature-sensor). Since one of the symptoms of Covid is fever, chances are you have gone to an office or store and had someone take your temperature using one of these very handy 'non contact' temperature sensors. (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4584) Unlike your classic glass or digital thermometers, these can give an instant reading, and no need to prod in someone's mouth or armpit. They're a little more complex, and cost more - but for rapid temperature taking, nothing compares! These non-contact thermometers all consist of the same setup: an infrared temperature element, analog circuitry, microcontroller to read the analog signals and compute the temperature, LED or LCD display to show the measured temperature. For the last few months, its been nearly impossible to locate infrared temperature elements - either single or matrix style - they were immediately purchased as the demand for non-contact thermometers and thermal cameras skyrocketed. We were consigned to the quoted 50 week lead times until we saw this NPI on Digi-Key for a very low cost analog IR sensor with over 30K pieces in stock! (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/amphenol-advanced-sensors/ZTP-148SRC1/45-ZTP-148SRC1-ND/12471481) The idea behind these sensors is pretty simple. Every object in this world emits infrared energy as it heats up, and the infrared wavelength and magnitude change depending on the heat. The sensors contain a thermopile, a silicon sensor that increases in milli-voltage as more infrared energy is absorbed. Point the sensor at the object and it will measure that IR light, and with a little math and calibration we can back-calculate the temperature of the object. We use the same technique to measure the temperature of distant stars, pretty cool! These sensors come in a cross-compatible package and configuration, although the packaging size may vary. They're in a metal tin with 4 leads. There are some more expensive sensors that contain a microcontroller with I2C control, and these pins would be power/ground/data/clock. However, these lower cost sensors are purely analog devices. Two pins are connected to a thermistor that is inside the can. The thermistor is used to compensate and correct for the internal temperature of the IR sensing element. The other two pins are for the thermopile, which is the actual infrared sensing element. The top of the cap is open and has a very thin layer of silicon glass which is transparent to Infrared but will block other light so you're only measuring what you want. Thermopiles are very sensitive and the voltage generated per degree is measured in tens of microvolts, so you definitely need a good op-amp for amplifying the voltage precisely to a level that is readable. Amphenol provides a schematic you can follow, and we also found tons of example projects and papers online (https://www.instructables.com/id/Thermopile-Sensor/) that use this part that you can follow along. Don't forget you'll also want to do 2-point calibration by pointing your sensor at known-temperature items so you can correct for any offset introduced by the op-amp or ADC.
