This week's EYE ON NPI video is very illuminating! It's the C&K KLS Series Illuminated Pushbutton series. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/ck-components/kls-series-illuminated-pushbutton) These very handsome buttons are clicky, glowy and come in a few different configurations depending on customer needs. The switches come in either SPDT or DPDT type, both momentary and latching on/off type, and with concave, flat or large flat clear tops. All of the ones available for purchase contain both red and green LEDs, so the front can be lit red, yellow or green. Note that there are 3 parallel LED inside, so you need 60mA per LED segment, (https://learn.adafruit.com/all-about-leds) but the front does illuminate nice and evenly which is something cheaper buttons struggle with. The tops are also easily removable, so you can put a label underneath, and they're nice crystal clear, so you'll get nice even illumination with an easy-to-clean cover. These are really high quality buttons with an excellent clicky feel and a durable build, they're perfect for A/V or industrial equipment where a clean user interface is important. Thanks to jeplers intrepid and unyielding efforts, we now have OV5640 camera module support in CircuitPython. This is a snazzy 5 MPixel camera module which can do JPEG encoding on-chip and auto levels. It's a rather nice camera and given you can always use it at lower res like 320x240, we think this is our pick. We got a few samples from the camera manufacturer and interestingly enough, we got one version with a kinda fisheye lens (that works fine) and one version with a pinhole lens and a SECRET! Time flies (or fugit irreparabile tempus as the cool Hellenistic teens might say) when you're enjoying this EYE ON NPI - this week we're featuring the Raltron Crystal Resonators Engineering Design Kit (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raltron/crystal-resonators-engineering-design-kit), a kit of 66 different crystal oscillators in various packages, frequencies and load capacitances. Crystals! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal) They're so cool sounding, who doesn't love sparkly rocks? While we usually associate the word with gems, bedazzling, and new-age healing, crystals made of piezo-electric material (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_oscillator) are great for generating precise sinusoids of a desired frequency. We need these to keep our electronics ticking away at the right frequency. And, somewhat annoyingly, each chip seems to require a totally different frequency. So you end up getting a lot of different crystals in your proto-typing bin. For example, 'timing' crystals tend to be 32.768 KHz, because if you have a 15 bit counter that keeps track of each oscillation, you'll count out one second every overflow. These crystals are super common, used in micro's for low-power or PLL-syncing, also in real-time-clocks that need to run on small coin cell batteries for years. So, 32KHz is maybe the most common value used that we've seen - this kit gives you many pages of them with different sizes. For microcontrollers, especially ones with USB, you'll want 12 or 24 MHz (USB peripherals tend to run on 12MHz or some multiple). Other chips often need 8MHz, 16MHz, 20MHz, 24 MHz or 32MHz. Then, sometimes you get unusual frequency requirements - like for RFID/NFC that uses 13.56 MHz RF frequencies, you'll need 27.12 MHz crystal (it's 2x the RF frequency, not surprisingly!) So this crystal oscillator kit (https://www.digikey.com/short/n5pvt3f9) is quite handy with 5 pieces of each value. Each crystal cut tape strip is in a pocket, looks like a holder for business cards or maybe baseball cards. The pocket is clear, so behind it is the identification information - what the part number is, the frequency, stability, tolerance, load capacitance, ESR, temperature and size. There's also a short URL and QR code for the datasheet from Raltron (big ups to them for getting their own URL shortener rather than leaning on a third party). Of course when you're ready to purchase for production, each part is stocked on Digi-Key as well (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/r/raltron/crystal-resonators-engineering-design-kit) I love this kit for having so many values and options and sizes. Every workshop and lab should have one, so whenever you're designing a new chip, you can verify the crystal size and specifications immediately. In this project, you'll learn how to build an audio reactive LED matrix using the 13x9 IS31FL3741 LED matrix and Feather Sense nRF52840 board with CircuitPython. The Feather Sense nRF52840 features a built-in PDM MEMs microphone for audio input. Audio is sampled via the onboard PDM microphone. The sampled data is then visualized with color. This week's EYE ON NPI is a pal that fits right in your pocket, literally! It's the Pokit All-in-One Meter, (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/pokit-innovations/pokit-meter) a miniature wireless multimeter, scope and datalogger. We've seen designs like this become more popular lately as many folks have phones on hand, which can act as a display (the display/UI is one of the more difficult and expensive elements of portable test equipment). When this one popped up on https://www.digikey.com/new we thought it would be worth checking out as it does a good job of matching enough desired specifications to be useful to a Maker or engineer. We like the mechanical design - it has got a cute retractable cable kit that you can pull out for use. The design of the probes is such that you can plug in optional and included micro-grabbers if desired, but the tips can be used as is. (We'll note that the micro grabbers don't fit into the body or anything so they need to be carried separately). While it's a tad large for a keychain, it isn't an outlandish size - it definitely could go into a purse or pocket without snagging. There's also a zipper pouch for those who like to keep their tools in a home. To work with any phone, it uses BLE for data transport. Unlikely many products we see, this doesn't use a rechargeable battery. Instead, the battery is an every day CR2032 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jauch-quartz/CR-2032-JAUCH-IB/13540138) which you can get replacements for at any hardware or corner shop. There's pros and cons to going with a primary cell, but we think this was probably a good choice as long as the battery level is well communicated to users. The processor inside is a Silabs EFR32BR13 wireless microcontroller (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/silicon-labs/EFR32BG13P732F512GM32-D/10135841) and a little bit of circuitry. Connecting is easy, after removing the battery tab, download and open the app, it will pair immediately - this went very smoothly. Then from the main screen you can select various functions. Most functions acted just the way you expect: continuity test, DC voltage measurement, temperature and resistance. There is a current measurement capability, which also means there's a fuse. You do get a spare fuse, and as most multimeters go, its something you'll probably mess up once by accidentally measuring in parallel. Thankfully the app warms you before going into current measurement mode. There's only one thing that folks should be aware of: there is an 'oscilloscope' mode but it really is more of a 'data capture' mode - the BLE link isn't fast enough to stream data, even triggered-signal data. Arguably, it's hard to do this reliably over BLE, but I think it is possible to have some data rate streamed, even if just to make it easier to verify that the right spot is probed - and it would be a really awesome feature. I think BLE 5 with large, non-acknowledged packets could do it. (https://www.novelbits.io/bluetooth-5-speed-maximum-throughput/) But perhaps it wouldn't work reliably on every model of phone. Hopefully next revision could do it since it would be such a killer feature! For something so small, it really does pack a good amount of capability, and while it would not replace your desktop scope or multimeter, it is a great addition to a dev kit. I could have really used something like this when traveling or at events!
