We had a smashing week of getting through some older prototypes. First up we have revised our CP2104 breakout to use the CP2102N as we covered last week, its the next 'generation' of Silabs usb-serial chips. Our rev B of Feather M4 adalogger is in, and we think we've got this one ready to ship. Finally we also got our 4-layer QT Py ESP32-S2 boards in and put together a prototype to verify the boards came out right (its our first 4 layer). This week's EYE ON NPI is like a Vulcan: no, it doesn't have pointy ears, but it is totally logical! It's the Crouzet Millenium Slim Ultra-Small Logic Controller. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/crouzet-usa/millenium-slim-ultra-small-logic-controller) It's the darn-cutest looking logic controller we've seen, with wireless BLE programming support for 4 inputs and 4 outputs. Each controller is very small compared to large PLCs, with 4 inputs and 4 outputs. There's a version with 500mA transistor sourcing outputs which can do PWM output, and two relay versions - one AC powered and one DC powered. Each input can also be PWM input and some can be tachometer or analog inputs. There's no LCD or TFT display - instead you can use a phone with iOS or Android to connect to the BLE interface to analyze/debug the output, and provide buttons for input if a UI is desired. (https://www.crouzet.com/products/automation-controllers/software/crouzet-virtual-display/) The nicest part of this product is the programming interface software. (https://www.crouzet.com/products/automation-controllers/software/) The software only runs on Windows that we could tell, but it's a simple drag-n-drop flow-based programming kit that lets the operator come up with simple logical operations that can be combined to create advanced control flows. This is a bit different than microcontroller programming: all the logic executes at the same time, so perhaps it's a little like a cross between block-based coding and FPGA/CPLD coding. There are some simple commands like Boolean logic, or simple counters - to more advanced ones like PID controllers, timers, or Schmidt triggers. Even though this is like a 'baby' PLC, it seems like the programs can be simulated/shared from smaller to larger controllers. The BLE connectivity is handled with a BlueGiga dongle (https://www.silabs.com/wireless/bluetooth/bluegiga-low-energy-legacy-modules/device.bled112)- this is a device that presents itself as a serial COM port and then takes commands over UART data to connect and transfer BLE data. This might seem a bit odd given that Win 10 has native wireless support - but probably a good idea since native BLE connectivity is really tough on desktop. There's also a better chance that the programmer could run in an emulator because the driver is generic. We think the Millenium Slim Ultra-Small Logic Controller could be an excellent first-time-PLC for someone starting out with PLC, or anyone with a small automation project where a big controller is overkill. We use the cp2104 usb-serial converter in a lot of our designs - but it's hard to get during the shortage(s). The cp2102n is available, and it's a clooooose replacement but theres a few small hardware changes needed and the internal eeprom is different. So, if you just spent 2 days trying to figure out why your cp2104 eeprom writing code isnt working and you were dreading having to rewrite the libusb vendor calls, good news! A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, there were computers that came with DE-9 serial ports that would let you read/write 8-bit serial data on two lines. Those days are gone, now we have USB only. Many modern chips have a built in USB native peripheral so you can connect to a computer, but there are still lots of chips that don't! In that case, you'll want a converter chip. This week's EYE ON NPI is easy-peesy-lemon-squeezy, the simplest way to add LTE cellular data connectivity to your product or project with Blues Wireless Notecard Cellular Modem System-on-Module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/blues-wireless/notecard-cellular-modem-som). These M2 cards come with 4 different cellular module types for global coverage on the LTE Cat 1 or Cat 1M (with backup CDMA and GPRS options). Each card slides into one of many different add-on boards that make connectivity to a Feather or Raspberry Pi foolproof. Blues Wireless' Notecard is a tiny 30 mm x 35 mm SoM device-to-cloud data pump. A Notecard purchase includes 500 MB of data that is usable over 10 years with the ability to top-up as needed. Connectivity is globally available in 136+ countries. The Notecard features an m.2 connector for embedding the user's board. As an embeddable SoM, the Notecard can be used with any microcontroller (MCU) for greenfield and retrofit projects using the user's design or one of Blues Wireless' custom-designed Notecarriers. With two lines of code, users can send data to the cloud in minutes without complex device registration or provisioning required. With a powerful JSON-based API, the Notecard can be programmed over USB or controlled from the preferred MCU or single-board computer (SBC) using one of Blues Wireless' open-source firmware libraries. Connect from the preferred host to the Notecard using Serial or I2C. The Notecard is designed to work with a cloud service for ingesting and processing device data. Notehub.io provides secure device connectivity, project, and fleet management, as well as simple routing to third-party cloud services. Alternatively, the user can host their device service based on Blues Wireless' open-source reference implementation. The Notecards use Quectel cellular modules, which are low cost and have been used for many years so they're very reliable. Depending on your location, you may not have LTE coverage yet (or LTE Cat M/M1) so do check your coverage maps and rollout plans - there's versions with GPRS (2G) and CDMA (3G) backup capabilities. The cellular plan itself is handled by Blues and is handled by AT&T, so no external SIM is required - although there is a insert spot for one if desired. Each module is bundled with a 10 year, 500MB cellular plan, which can be customized if needed. 500MB doesn't sound like a lot, but if you're using MQTT for sending data reports, where each packet is only a couple-hundred bytes max, it will last a long time. Check AT&T's coverage map to know which module you'll need to use for your area (https://www.att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html) We particularly like the M.2 module design idea - it makes insertion very easy and doesn't allow for flipped boards or bent pins. Swapping out different modules can be done in a post-manufacturing step or as an add-on upgrade situation. It also means as cellular networks are upgraded and retired (which happens every 5~10 years!) the module can be changed over. If you need to source an M2 connector - Digi-Key has tons of those in stock too (https://www.digikey.com/short/zn1q8z), just make sure you get E-key type. These contacts are under a dollar a piece and come on tape-and-reel for easy pick and placing. The modules are designed for end-use cases. While prototyping you may want to use their handy "Notecarrier" breakout boards (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/blues-wireless/notecarrier). Each one can use any of the Notecards, so just mix and match as desired. There are ones for battery usage, Raspberry Pi HAT, and Feather breakout. Yayyy we got the Feather M4 Adalogger PCBs in so we quickly put one together. This is kinda a respin of the Feather M4 Express with all the upgrades we want: USB C, 8 MB of QSPI flash, J20 instead of J19 (more flash/RAM), Stemma QT port, micro SD card on the back, and power-switchable I2C/SD/NeoPixel for low power usage. we're just working on getting the bootloader and Arduino support all worked out now - CircuitPython definition will be next. We had a nice long weekend with tasty food, hanging out with friends, and doing electronics! one thing we got around to finally was finishing a QT Py that is based on the ESP32-S2. Yeah this is many months old but we also wanted to wait till we could get the version of the chip with PSRAM built in. We're doing Arduino & CircuitPython tests now. Design is ready to go with a nice silkscreen :) The Great Search - uFL connector https://www.digikey.com/short/m55nzw3d For our QT Py board, we're starting with a mini 2.4 GHz antenna - but we know some folks will want better range than what this lil ceramic antenna can do. For them, we'll make a version with a uFL connector. These are a very low cost, but universally-used connector for RF signals. This ESP32-S2 QT Py is so smol i just wannna pinch its lil cheeks! on the back is and ESP32-S2 with 4 MB Flash and 2MB PSRAM all stuffed inside this QFN chip. we verified Arduino works last night. So today we've been testing out CircuitPython support. Here's an Adafruit IO demo that sends sensor data from plug-n-play QT boards over MQTT to a dashboard. this demo has been runnin all day flawlessly.
