Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 2

OK now that we've gotten the motor up and running, and the drive selected in step 1 - we know our wiring is correct. step 2 is getting data out! unlike almost all protocols we're used to, there's no clock pin on floppy data. it comes out in MFM format (at least, this floppy disk format does) which means we get a series of ~500kHz open-drain pulses with short negative widths, and varying positive widths that indicate flux transitions. now the *proper* thing to do here is use a PLL to sync up with the pulses since the motor speed can vary a few %, then convert the pulse widths to bits of data. but we're gonna do it dirty to start, and just busy-poll the pin using a fast register gpio read and collect pulse widths, then maybe decode and bitpack them on the fly. not sure if this is workable yet, but it looks OK so far: just started collecting the data pulses and they seem to be binnable. part 1 is here: https://youtu.be/ceyM6vYpT74 #floppy #python #arduino Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Adding floppy disk support to CircuitPython, step 1

If there's one thing we believe in strongly here at Adafruit its that if you have an embedded interpreted language running on your microcontroller, it's super important that you can access floppy drives from it. Sure, sure, you could use a micro SD card, but microSD cards can get lost easily compared to a chonky 3.5". So we're starting to look at how to get a floppy drive up and running. The good news is you can use 5V power and it seems to be ok with 3V logic levels. We've got the idc cabling wired up right we think, because we can now turn on the motor and see index pulses coming out at around 5Hz. This Samsung SFD-321B datasheet has been really helpful in interfacing, and so far our code is in Arduino since we're comfy with that for hardware noodling. We'll publish it as a cross-platform-usable open source hardware so folks can keep on spinnin'. https://cdn.datasheetspdf.com/pdf-down/S/F/D/SFD-321B-Samsung.pdf #floppy #python #arduino Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Desk of Ladyada - Cozy Holiday Chillax Time

Ooh its the end of the year, a very liminal time as it were! We are keeping warm and well-fed while wrapping up some projects. We got our Scorpio PCBs in, but we're still waiting on our 8-bit level shifter chips before putting em together. We also are working again on our Feather M4 Adalogger board. While doing so we started working on some Learn guide templates for Arduino, particularly since we're doing more low-power or 'unusual' configurations for our hardware and it can be a little odd to get onboard hardware working. The Learn guide templates are kinda interesting so we thought we'd show how they work! EYE on NPI - TDK BCS Series Low Illumination Film Solar Cells

This week's EYE ON NPI is so flexible, it's thinking of joining the Rockettes (https://www.rockettes.com/christmas/)! It's TDK's BCS Series Low Illumination Film Solar Cells that are designed for direct integration of products, particularly wearables or credit card size and thickness electronic components. This amorphous panel comes with 6 cells, each about 0.4V open-circuit, for a total of about 2.6V output and 30mA. The nifty part about this panel is just how incredibly thin it is - only 0.2mm which means it can be bonded onto almost any surface or device. And unlike most panels that are made of monocrystalline cells, it is ultra flexible and will not crack or break. TDK's BCS series are thin, lightweight, and flexible solar cells offering high power generation efficiency under fluorescent and LED light sources. The cells are made of amorphous silicon film substrate, and designs can be customized according to various shapes and applications. Because BCS series solar cells offer output stability in low and dim light, they are suitable for use in products used indoors. Additional benefits of solar cells include cost reduction in electrical wiring and battery replacement. When used in combination with a primary battery, solar cells can extend battery life and usage time of rechargeable devices. BCS series solar cells can be used in applications such as watches, wearables, beacons, wireless sensor nodes and other IoT power supply applications, smart cards and locks, and more. Compared to many other ultra-low power source harvesting techniques (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_harvesting) like vibration/piezoelectric or heat, solar is very efficient, very small and very easy to use. Amorphous cells are a great option for folks who want to have indoor-powered electronics without hassle. Simply connect the two terminals to you circuitry plus and minus: when there's ambient light, you'll get voltage output. These panels may look familiar if you've ever had a solar-powered calculator (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar-powered_calculator) - often times you'd have to hold these up to a lamp to get them 'kick-started'. Those pocket calculators with LCDs are a great example of ultra-low current draw electronics that could run off of a tiny cell, we're talking under a milliamp here. That's something to keep in mind when integrating panels, they produce about 1/10th of the power folks think they do! The biggest challenge that folks have with implementing solar panels is that they don't really act like a true voltage source or current source: they're somewhere in the middle, like a negative diode. With solar panels, the voltage and current vary constantly depending on sunlight available. They are unstable! That instability confuses electronics battery chargers, which causes them to do one of two things: rapidly turn on and off as they try to draw more current from the panel than possible and/or draw much less current than they can, to keep the voltage from collapsing. So you've got a few choices for implementing this panel: 1) have electronics that is OK with a widely varying input voltage: about 2V to 5V max, and will brownout safely when light disappears all of a sudden. Then, make sure it uses less than a few mA of current so that it doesn't collapse the IV curve by drawing too much power 2) use a super capacitor or rechargeable battery of some sort, that is trickle charged by the panel. once the voltage on the cap gets to a certain amount, the circuitry can use that to perform whatever calculators or data transfer required. 3) use a smart energy-harvesting chip like the LTC3588 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc/LTC3588EMSE-1-TRPBF/2216345) to manage the load on the panel and either charge a battery or directly power electronics with a cleaner supply than directly powered from the solar cell. Sometimes these chips can even operate as a MPPT charger (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_power_point_tracking) to get the very max power possible. If you're interested in adding a super-flexible and ultra-thin green power supply to your next design, check out the BCS4430B6 (https://www.digikey.com/short/vwm3z35j) and friends. The TDK BCS Series Low Illumination Film Solar Cells (https://www.digikey.com/short/vwm3z35j) are in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipping! MCP23017 QT 'drop n beep' tester + some PINK PCB samples

Ladyada's desk is jam packed with goodies :) first up, we're trying to always order the tester PCBs when we get our panels in, so we don't have to mill out a prototype on the bantam unless something goes amiss. this is a 'drop n beep' tester - where it repeatedly attempts to test and then beeps/blinks on success. the production team loves these kinds of testers. then, we got some 'pantone chips' made of PCB material with copper underneath, from our board house, to match the PCBway pink. this is so we have two sources of PCBs - we've been seeing lockdowns take out some of our suppliers lately! this is Pantone 204 C (hex #E782A9). nice color right? don't forget, you can STILL get a free pink Feather RP2040 when you order $99 or more from adafruit.com - https://www.adafruit.com/product/5299 we will run out in a few days so don't wait too long! #adafruit #pink #pantone Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The Great Search: 74AHCT245 Small 3V to 5V logic level shifter

For the SCORPIO Feather, we need to buffer 8 outputs for NeoPixels from a 3V signal to a 5V signal. The '245 is the transceiver we have traditionally used - but we need a very smol chip, that can also handle if the logic level is 3V and the power supply maybe gets towards 5.5V, thus getting dangerously close to 1/2 VCC. Feather ESP32-S2 TFT Feather final low power test

Lots of people don't like to admit when they make a mistake - but we love to share our 'happy little accidents' so folks can learn from us! We had ordered PCBs for the ESP32-S2 TFT Feather and realized right before going into production that while we were depowering the I2C power (to turn off external sensors while going into deep sleep, for example) we still have the I2C pullups enabled...this caused higher current due to the back-powering leak. Woops! But hey, we either win or learn something. So here's a quick re-spin we did to verify we got it right this time. The PM2.5 is a massive I2C device, and here we are going into low power and deep sleep for one second each, to verify that we are hitting that 80uA in deep sleep for sure. Desk of Ladyada - Post-Family Visit Desk Check!

We're back from visiting family, but we do have some goodies on our desk to show off. One is our ESP32-S2 TFT Feather did get wrapped, we wanted to make sure our low power mode is right - we made a mistake with the pullups on the earlier version. We also have a new Feather we finished designing with the code name SCORPIO! The Great Search - 74AHCT245 Small 3V to 5V logic level shifter https://www.digikey.com/short/85jj2p04 For the SCORPIO Feather, we need to buffer 8 outputs for NeoPixels from a 3V signal to a 5V signal. the '245 is the transceiver we have traditionally used - but we need a very smol chip, that can also handle if the logic level is 3V and the power supply maybe gets towards 5.5V, thus getting dangerously close to 1/2 VCC. We'll show why the T is important! #deskofladyada #thegreatsearch #adafruit Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

The QT Py ESP32-S2 tester lives! A coming soon preview :)

OK so to get the QT Py manufactured we need a tester. In this case we're not going with a teensy or arduino because the fastest way to program an esp32-s2 (we've found) is with the compressing stub loader that esptool.py uses. also, we're going to be doing a wifi signal test where we scan on the Raspi for the ESP's access point - this is a simple but effective way to make sure the antenna is on right. the tester python code runs on the pi, with a pitft for colorful text output and buttons to start test. another great example of using your own tools to make tools that are used to make other tools! #adafruit #esp32s2 #qtpy Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

EYE ON NPI - Panasonic EKMB/EKMC Series Flat Square Lens Type PIR Motion Sensors

This week's EYE ON NPI is *PIRfect* for adding human-motion detection to your product or project - it's Panasonic's new PaPIR sensor line-up (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/panasonic-electric-works/ekmb-ekmc-series-flat-square-lens-type-pir-motion-sensors), featuring ultra-low power current consumption, a jaunty square shape, and multiple color options so your sensors will be detecting in style. PIR sensors are great for detection motion of humans and other large & warm things. They are particularly excellent for making your designs use less power / be more 'green' because you can detect when a person walks into the room or in front of your control panel: so monitors or lights can be disabled or dimmed when there's no people around. Or your thermostat will know that it doesn't need to turn on the AC or heat since nobody is at home. And it does this all without video cameras, face detection or cloud computing (we're only being slightly sarcastic here!) The PIR sensor element itself has two or more slots in it, each slot is made of a special material that is sensitive to IR. The two slots can 'see' out past some distance (basically the sensitivity of the sensor). When the sensor is idle, both slots detect the same amount of IR, the ambient amount radiated from the room or walls or outdoors. When a warm body like a human or animal passes by, it first intercepts one half of the PIR sensor, which causes a positive differential change between the two halves. When the warm body leaves the sensing area, the reverse happens, whereby the sensor generates a negative differential change. These change pulses are what is detected. The Panasonic PaPIR modules (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/panasonic-electric-works/ekmb-ekmc-series-flat-square-lens-type-pir-motion-sensors) take a full circuit board's worth of PIR support components and tuck them all into the metal can that fits beneath the plastic lens of the sensor. Since it is fully integrated, you only need to solder in 3 wires: power, ground and output for instant detection up to 5 meters away. There are other PIR sensors available, but they tend to be kind of large and are hard to integrate into a design directly. (https://www.adafruit.com/product/189) - they're best for maker projects not necessarily products. The EKMB/EKMC designs from Panasonic brings a very compact and ultra-low power solution for when you want a small 5 meter-range PIR sensor that can be soldered directly to a board. And the power draw is super low - about 1~20uA, so it can be used for battery powered products. Since it's so low power, you could connect the output pin directly to an enable pin for a power supply or to a transistor for turning on power to lights or a buzzer. Note that the ambient current draw will affect the stability warm-up time and the sensitivity, so you'll probably want to try different ones in-situ to see the minimal current draw you can get away with. *PIRhaps* you're interested in picking some up? Well, today is your day cause Digi-Key has all the different sizes, colors and sensitivity options available for purchase right now in stock! Visit the Panasonic EKMB/EKMC Series Flat Square Lens Type PIR Motion Sensors feature page (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/p/panasonic-electric-works/ekmb-ekmc-series-flat-square-lens-type-pir-motion-sensors) to place your order today and you will be able to add ultra-low-power sensing by tomorrow afternoon. We've gotten a lot of requests for a MCP23017 breakout and we've always sorta been like "ehh why not just use the DIP chip?" but with STEMMA QT we could see the use case for a plug and play version that comes with all the passives on board. so this breakout has 16 GPIO with matching ground pad. each gpio can have pullup, with 3 address pins, 2 irq pins, runs on 3 or 5V power and logic. we think this board is kind qt! #adafruit #stemma #MCP23017 Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------

Desk of Ladyada - Lots of prototypes: Feather M4, QT Py ESP32-S2, and CP2102N

We had a smashing week of getting through some older prototypes. First up we have revised our CP2104 breakout to use the CP2102N as we covered last week, its the next 'generation' of Silabs usb-serial chips. Our rev B of Feather M4 adalogger is in, and we think we've got this one ready to ship. Finally we also got our 4-layer QT Py ESP32-S2 boards in and put together a prototype to verify the boards came out right (its our first 4 layer). The Great Search - ESP32-S2 chips of all flavors https://www.digikey.com/short/8qtrnqc8 This week's Great Search is about learning from mistakes - in this case I ordered the wrong ESP32-S2 chip for the QT Py S2, because I wasn't paying attention to all the variants. EYE ON NPI - Crouzet Millenium Slim Ultra-Small Logic Controller

This week's EYE ON NPI is like a Vulcan: no, it doesn't have pointy ears, but it is totally logical! It's the Crouzet Millenium Slim Ultra-Small Logic Controller. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/c/crouzet-usa/millenium-slim-ultra-small-logic-controller) It's the darn-cutest looking logic controller we've seen, with wireless BLE programming support for 4 inputs and 4 outputs. Each controller is very small compared to large PLCs, with 4 inputs and 4 outputs. There's a version with 500mA transistor sourcing outputs which can do PWM output, and two relay versions - one AC powered and one DC powered. Each input can also be PWM input and some can be tachometer or analog inputs. There's no LCD or TFT display - instead you can use a phone with iOS or Android to connect to the BLE interface to analyze/debug the output, and provide buttons for input if a UI is desired. (https://www.crouzet.com/products/automation-controllers/software/crouzet-virtual-display/) The nicest part of this product is the programming interface software. (https://www.crouzet.com/products/automation-controllers/software/) The software only runs on Windows that we could tell, but it's a simple drag-n-drop flow-based programming kit that lets the operator come up with simple logical operations that can be combined to create advanced control flows. This is a bit different than microcontroller programming: all the logic executes at the same time, so perhaps it's a little like a cross between block-based coding and FPGA/CPLD coding. There are some simple commands like Boolean logic, or simple counters - to more advanced ones like PID controllers, timers, or Schmidt triggers. Even though this is like a 'baby' PLC, it seems like the programs can be simulated/shared from smaller to larger controllers. The BLE connectivity is handled with a BlueGiga dongle (https://www.silabs.com/wireless/bluetooth/bluegiga-low-energy-legacy-modules/device.bled112)- this is a device that presents itself as a serial COM port and then takes commands over UART data to connect and transfer BLE data. This might seem a bit odd given that Win 10 has native wireless support - but probably a good idea since native BLE connectivity is really tough on desktop. There's also a better chance that the programmer could run in an emulator because the driver is generic. We think the Millenium Slim Ultra-Small Logic Controller could be an excellent first-time-PLC for someone starting out with PLC, or anyone with a small automation project where a big controller is overkill. Best of all, both the BLE dongle (https://www.digikey.com/short/ct5hqv07) and PLC (https://www.digikey.com/short/2jfv2p4d) are in stock right at Digi-Key for immediate purchase. So whether you are an expert automator, or a beginner mechatronist - purchase today and you can get it in your hands tomorrow morning! See on Digi-Key at https://www.digikey.com/short/2jfv2p4d

Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com 0:00 Getting started and hellos 3:28 Housekeeping 6:24 Is the flash needed less on those CP targets without USB ? 7:28 sleep update 11:00 Hi Scott - got a ? on the nrf52 bootloader and where/who should set the bootloader config regarding the CRC check and setting the bit for "app valid" bit in the bootloader config register of the nrf52xxx Should it be done at the bootloader and set it to assume a good app? or should it be done at the application level where the crc might be computed and flashed at the same time as the application. Perhaps Thach would know more… 21:47 Pi Zero 34:38 NeoPixel on RPi 41:37 Firmware Debugging and Development Tools for projects and contributing to CircuitPython https://www.adafruit.com/explore/firmware-debugging-and-development 52:58 Back to neopixel 1:16:33 Where does the Neopixel code live in CircuitPython? 1:20:20 Start implementing Neopixel for the CircuitPython RaspberryPi port 1:30:19 Q: I can’t build today’s CircuitPython latest. Scott: A good place to followup is in the #circuitpython-dev channel on Adafruit Discord or open an issue in GitHub. 1:30:52 Back to implementing Neopixel 1:40:36 What speed should data be sent to the FIFO and how is that controlled? 1:42:22 Let’s see if it builds and works! What could go wrong? 1:44:35 Oops. First a code.py that uses the Neopixel needs to be on the Raspberry Pi 1:46:16 Setting up Salea Logic analyzer for neopixel to monitor the Raspberry Pi 1:47:16 It didn’t work, debugging 1:48:03 Todbot: That neopixel analyzer is pretty cool! 1:49:30 print debugging in CircuitPython 1:54:40 Q: Will CP for RPi understand HMD_cvt and HDMI_drive in config.txt so I can configure a 5 inch HDMI LCD from Waveshare? 1:55:26 Back to the broadcom data sheet and debugging continues 1:57:24 Wrapping up and Goodbye for 2021. Next Deep Dive is tentatively on 7 January 2022. We can now set RX/TX LEDs on our CP2102N usb serial boards

We use the cp2104 usb-serial converter in a lot of our designs - but it's hard to get during the shortage(s). The cp2102n is available, and it's a clooooose replacement but theres a few small hardware changes needed and the internal eeprom is different. So, if you just spent 2 days trying to figure out why your cp2104 eeprom writing code isnt working and you were dreading having to rewrite the libusb vendor calls, good news! This pr to a fork of a program compiled cleanly and did the job a treat on our raspberry pi tester. https://github.com/irrwisch1/cp210x-cfg/pull/1 whew :) #adafruit #CP2102N Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ -----------------------------------------
