Ep 129EPISODE 125: Hello August! Recover, Rest, Renew!
E“When you rest, you catch your breath and it holds you up, like water wings…” — Anne Lamott“Renewal is what happens when you realize that some of this stuff you’ve been carrying around doesn’t matter.” — Rob BellIt’s AUGUST baby! That’s right dear listeners we are manifesting our way to a workfree August. While we aren’t quite there yet (I’m looking at you lack of beach house), we are choosing to set the tone for the life we want to lead and we’re taking a break this month. We have a lot of creative plans for the fall and are excited to get to them, but we are saying so long to boring, uninspiring admin work. Recovery, Rest, Renewal. We’ve talked your ear off on how important it is. This month we are practicing what we preach. Here’s your homework, and ours as well. We have a month before Labor Day and still a big chunk of time before the official end of summer. What feeling do you want to have when the summer is over, what vibe do you want to have? What’s your plan to get there?RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOWDid you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Head to Apple Podcasts and then rate, review, and subscribe. Ep 127EPISODE 123: Families, Kids and Mental Health
EWe take a brief break between our seasons for a mini season focused on our kids, our families, mental health, and neurodiversity. We will take these two episodes to discuss how we can support those we love who deal with challenges and how to support our families. Research shows that parental well-being is strongly affected by their children’s mental health challenges. A child's mental health challenges has quantifiable costs (time and money) but also emotional burdens on parents and the entire family. Improving our children's mental health improves the wellbeing of the entire family.Join us in this important conversation, because we can and will make this world a more caring and empathetic place. Ep 119EPISODE 115: Unlocking what is holding us back with putting ourselves forward
E“Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.” – Dr. Brené BrownHow do we put ourselves forward when something is holding us back? Do you struggle remembering that you have been successful? Do you let the self-doubt get loud? Hello imposter syndrome! What about the cultural conditioning and discrimination that holds us back? When we’re unaware of it, cultural conditioning can act as a formidable force against our ability to evolve. The beliefs and behaviors we’ve accepted as the norm give us a sense of comfort and control. So when changes occur in the world or among the influences in our life, they can challenge our cultural beliefs and make us uneasy to the point where we must make a decision. In order to push forward despite these many things holding us back we need to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is needed to be courageous, but it doesn’t mean that if you’re courageous, you don’t experience fear. At We Go Boldly we don’t push through our fear, but we do let ourselves experience it, and move on. This week we talk about how to strengthen our ability to be vulnerable, take risks, overcome imposter syndrome and put ourselves forward! This is a doozy of an episode. Ep 107THROWBACK to EPISODE 30: Practicing Acceptance
EIts way back Wednesday when we highlight one of our favorite episodes. This episode we focus on practicing acceptance from the perspective of empathy. Acceptance is hard. Acceptance means embracing reality. It is a willingness to experience things as they are, instead of insisting that they be as you want them to be. It is only with acceptance that we can truly embrace change and practice empathy. Acceptance allows you to move on instead of being perpetually stuck in a quagmire of “should haves” and “would haves”.We reflect on our own hesitancy with acceptance and the steps we can take to achieve it. As with everything else, acceptance takes continue practice and hard work. Join us for this week and we can do the hard work to build collective empathy.GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKJournal time: Where in your life could you be more accepting? Ep 102EPISODE 101: Letting go of outcomes and control in order to embrace our power
EToday on We Go Boldly Rielly and Tovah talk about letting go of outcomes and urge to control ourselves, our environment, other people in order to feel safe and okay. So often we struggle with the feeling that we can direct and control the universe by will, by demand, by gripping tightly to our expectation of what ought to be. This episode examines why we want to control things and people (hello fear), and how we cling to preconceived outcomes rather than accepting where we actually are right now. We walk through the science and concepts around why we need to let go of control and why it can feel so challenging to do so. Throughout this conversation we consider the ins and outs of how we often find ourselves in a cycle of clinging to outcomes, and then feeling shame, disappointment, remorse, and a multitude of other feelings when the outcome is not what we expected. Finally, we walk through a number of ways we can help ourselves let go of outcomes and put down the burden of trying to control uncontrollable people, environments, and things. We start with acceptance of where and who we are, move to letting go of our perfectionist tendencies, and end with naming our inner tyrants. When we take the time to feel our feelings, and focus on what we actually can control; our actions and reactions, then we have space, energy and time to embrace our power. We have the capacity to focus on our inner voice, who we are at our core, and how we can bring that person out into the light. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKLet’s take some time to examine what outcomes we are attached to and what tools we can use to help ourselves surrender and let go of outcomes. Ep 94EPISODE 93: Letting go and moving forward
E"There is a fine balance between honoring the past and losing yourself in it. You can acknowledge and learn from the mistakes you made and then move on. It's called forgiving yourself." -Eckhart TolleThis week on We Go Boldly we go to the past so we can move forward to the future. Dealing with the past is not the same as denying your past or pretending you are not impacted by it. Rather - choosing how we move forward after addressing what we need to from our past.We have to strike a balance between honoring our past and history—without letting it limit or hold us back from moving forward. Oh but how. It is not easy! It doesn’t help that our brains make it easier to hold onto the negative than the positive. So how do you let go? You have to decide to let it go. We are here to help. Ep 92EPISODE 91: Boundaries will set you free
EWe are Going Boldly into season 7 and talking all about boundaries and embracing our power this week. Setting boundaries with ourselves can change the way in which we look at the world, but even more importantly it can change how we feel about ourselves. Once we learn to listen to our inner voice, hear and tend to our needs without judgment or shame we begin to build healthy stable boundaries around our lives. Those boundaries set the stage for how we can embrace our power in a meaningful and lasting manner. The purpose behind building those boundaries is to create that lasting relationship with the honest version of yourself, and in order to do that you have to take the time to get to know that person. Healthy boundaries around who you are, who you want to be, what values and morals you hold, what you are willing to do all serve to build that foundation. Over time as you continue to grow and develop that person and those boundaries in an intentional manner, you can expand them out to include other people. Those boundaries with other people then set the stage for how you are willing to, and expect to, be treated by others and by the Universe at large. Putting those expectations out into the universe is a part of setting forth on your path in life. The clearer you can be around what you are willing and unwilling to accept the better off you will be. Weak and unhealthy boundaries will often cause you to give away or diminish your own power, rather than embrace it as we are meant to. Tune in to our full episode to learn more about how setting boundaries will help you embrace your power and potential.GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKJournal: Take time to reflect on your relationships as they are right now. Those you have with yourself, your family, your work colleagues, friends etc.Make a list of the 5 most important relationships you have (your relationship with you should be at the top) Then make a list, or brainstorm, or freewrite how those relationships are working, could be better, or have changed over time. Ep 90EPISODE 89: Belonging and Adults
EBelonging and fitting in are not the same thing. This week we continue the second half of our mini series on what it means to belong as an adult. We wade through the tangle of emotions and conditioning that cause us to force ourselves to fit it, even at the cost of our own happiness. On this episode of We Go Boldly we talk about the reality that belonging is something fundamentally necessary to our well being. Humans need to feel that sense of connection in order to thrive. We build our sense of belonging not by trying to fit it, rather by bringing our true and honest self to the table. As we go further into how we can break through some of the social conditioning, early childhood misinformation, and other blocks to cultivating a sense of belonging within ourselves. We bring some practical suggestions on what to do each day to help you on your journey! Finally, we dive into why it is so important to get to know yourself well, build your sense of self-awareness and inner voice in order to really develop the ability to feel comfortable and confident in who you are and that you belong. Join us and let us know what you think! GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKDo some mantra work. Write down Mr. Rodgers quote “I like you just the way you are.” Every day for a week look in the mirror or write down on a piece of paper and say “I like myself just the way I am.” Do it for a week!Let us know how it goes on social media. Ep 89EPISODE 88: Belonging and Kids
E“Belonging is being accepted for being you. Fitting in is being accepted for being like everyone else.” - Brene BrownAs we head back to school we thought we should take a break and talk about belonging. This impacts our children and it impacts us. Today we talk about the kids. Don’t be surprised if we talk a bit about our inner voice and our authentic self. . The challenge is that belonging isn’t measured by simply participating in activities like eating dinner together as a family, showing up to a school building, or joining a group. Belonging is measured by how we feel about ourselves and others once we get there. We spend time in this episode sharing the ways we can start building a sense of belonging at home. It is not the easiest thing to do but we can start with simple steps like making rhythms and memories. We can give our children, and children in our lives a safe place to belong. Just take it from Mister Rogers, who knew how important it was for children to know that “I like you just the way you are.” And join us this week as we talk about how we can help the children in our lives find that sense of belonging. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKJournal time. Think back to your time as a child. When did you experience a sense of belonging? Was it with family or friends? Write why you felt that way? What triggered your sense of belonging? If there are children in your life, what can you do to help ensure they have a sense of safety and belonging when with you? Ep 88EPISODE 87: Selfcare and Boundaries
EInterested in self-care and boundaries and how they go together? Join us today for the final episode of Season 6, our journey into busyness and self-worth. Today we take on the potentially confusing and often abused topic of self care. Setting boundaries is one of the best and most cost effective ways of participating in actual self-care. All of this leads us to address our role in the busyness we engage in within our lives. Join us today for all of this and more on We Go Boldly. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Journal: We are practicing boundary setting. Visualize and name your limits. Think about what kind of boundaries you have in your life. Make a list of the boundaries you have already set. These don’t have to be huge boundaries. Go through the process we talked about before. Picture it as an actual boundary. Make a plan for setting your limits and communicating those limits in a kind and positive way. Add other boundaries you would like to add to the list and think about how you will set those. If you are not participating in self care, figure out how you can fit it into your life. What selfcare is most important to you.Reach out to us on social/email/website and let us know how it goes. Ep 87EPISODE 86: Society and Busyness
E“You don’t always have to be doing something. You can just be, and that’s plenty.” - Alice WalkerBuckle up friends. This is a big and very important conversation. Tovah and Rielly talk about white supremacy, the patriarchy, and even capitalism. Truth be told they are all connected. We are definitely not the first to have these thoughts and thus we will be directing you to a lot of great resources including but not limited to Tricia Hersey with the @napministry.In case you’re wondering what this has to do with burn out, don’t worry, it has everything to do with busyness. The report found that 68 percent of working moms say they’re burned out compared with 42 percent of working dads. Not only are we working more and spending more time with our children—we have less help. This leads to our conversation on the human giver syndrome as recently highlighted in the book Burnout by Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski. Life feels hard because it is hard. It is time to recognize the system we live in is part of the reason. Whether you’re new to thinking about these issues or not these are important conversations to have and we are glad to have you! GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKTime for some journaling. Ask yourself a few questions: Am I assuming this woman has a moral obligation to be pretty, happy, calm, generous, or attentive to the needs of others?Am I assuming this man has a moral right and obligation to be competitive and acquisitive, to take and have anything he can, regardless of the impact on others? How am I contributing to a patriarchal system? What am I doing every day to make it worse and make it better? Take some time to broaden your world. Look in both real life and online to expand your circle to include those who do not have the same life experiences. Listen and learn.RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOWDid you enjoy this episode? Ep 86EPISODE 85: Pinterest Perfect Parenting
EIt's time to get serious…of course that’s what we’ve been doing all season but this week we get serious about perfectionism and “pinterest parenting.” What happens when we set goals and achievements for our kids without reflecting on what our kids need? What happens when we set unrealistic expectations for ourselves as parents? When we demand perfectionism of ourselves, what are we teaching our kids? There are some truths shared today (truths that Tovah wants to ignore). We talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly of perfection parenting. We also talk about how we can do things differently. Join us this week as we all work on making sure we can navigate parenthood and life without perfectionism. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKGrab your journals! If you are a parent, think about how you are parenting right now. Are you pushing your kids to be something or do something that they are not? Do you feel that perfectionism or demanding?Keep journaling and think about your childhood and reflect on what your experience was like growing up? Did you have this kind of perfectionism in your life? (Only do this if it is safe. If not, reach out to a therapist.)Take a minute to journal about your ideal day with your kids and how you would be. Ep 84EPISODE 83: Goals and Achievement
EWelcome to this week’s conversation all about goals and achievement. Why do we set all of these goals? What are we trying to prove? Rielly and Tovah are fans of goal setting as much as the next person, actually quite a lot more, but they are not fans of goals for the sake of goals. That is next level achievement culture getting in the way. Achievement Culture and setting goals for the sake of setting goals rather than to actually achieve our dreams is not the path to a limitless life. We talk all about the rat race, what we do to our kids in school, and how we can decide when to opt out of the achievement culture. The good news is that you CAN achieve your goals and be present! Join us as we talk about how we can have your cake and eat it too. No seriously, there is a way to set goals that matter without getting caught in the rat race. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKBust at that journal. Look at your 5 year plan (If you have one). Why is that your plan? Does it fit with who you are? Does it connect with your authentic self? Ep 82EPISODE 81: Comparisons; Expectations, Judgements & Self-Worth
EWe Go Boldly into uncharted territory today with a special guest co-host! As we dig into the difficult world of comparisons we are so fortunate to have a dear friend of the show, Bunmi Emenejo join us on this episode. We explore the ins and outs of what it means to spend your life constantly comparing yourself to either yourself and/or to others. We discuss the ways in which we sabotage our own happiness by consistently comparing our current state to what we expected, imagined or were told to want. Thinking and talking through how to combat the urge to wonder “what if, if only, I should just” and all the other ways that we compare our current lives to what might have been. Beyond self-comparison we often find ourselves comparing our circumstances to those of the people around us in real life, online, on social media, at work and everywhere in between. These types of endless comparisons lead us to stray from our own purpose, feel insecure, depressed, unworthy and down. We fail to recognize our own strengths as we spend our time comparing our characteristics to people we know nothing about. Tune in to hear our conversation all around busyness, self-worth, comparisons and don’t forget to rate, review, and subscribe while you’re there!GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKWe’re coming with two homework choices. First think about what is harder for you right now. Is it comparing yourself to where you think you should be? Or is it comparing yourself to others. If you struggle with comparing yourself to yourself, grab your journal. Keep track of what triggers you to compare yourself to yourself. If you struggle with comparing yourself to others, take a social media break. Step away from social media for a week. As we know social media is a prime place where we compare ourselves to others. Give yourself a break.Lastly, stop over on Instagram or if you’re taking a social media break send a message on our website, and tell us how you are doing. Ep 80EPISODE 79: Looking for self worth in other people
EToday we are boldly exploring the consequences of the proverbial putting all your eggs in other peoples baskets. Yes we are mixing metaphors and loving it. In our continued discussion of busyness and self worth we examine the pitfalls of putting your self-worth in someone else's hands. The truth is we all have been there to some degree at some point in time. Seeking external validation to confirm that we are worth it, our dreams are worth it, our existence is valued and cherished. What happens when we fail to build ourselves up without all that outside help though? Or when we never learn how?On today’s episode we dive into that dark and doomy topic to think about the ramifications of a world where we don’t know our own worth. There are things we can do to build our self worth, re-examine the way we look at the world, change our lens and try again. There is always hope, and homework, to help you get where you want to go. Tune in today!GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKLook back on an experience where you were proud but you didn’t receive the external validation. Journal how you felt? How did it affect you going forward? For the rest of the week, pay attention to when you are waiting for external validation. What is the reason behind that? Think about how you are feeing when that happens. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOWDid you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts.
