Ep 79EPISODE 78: Busyness and worth with Alyson McNair
EAll season long we are continuing our conversation around busyness and self-worth. We’ve covered a lot of ground already though I suspect we could spend an entire year talking about this subject. Today we are thrilled to continue our interview series advocate Alyson McNair.Alyson was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She started her career at the age of 14 as an Office Assistant for East New York Betterment, a nonprofit that assisted the elderly. It was there where she learned how nonprofits are pivotal to helping change communities. After years of government work and in the private industry Alyson realized even more about the hardships of people gaining employment after incarceration and decided to start a nonprofit to address the issue. She began conceptualizing and planning for Perfect, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides job training, job placement and lifestyle coaching for women who have been incarcerated. Alyson is passionate about creating a world where women who have been incarcerated can receive the proper support needed to become contributing citizens to society. She is an advocate for their dreams and visions to be and have all they were destined to have. Alyson is also a wife and mother. Needless to say she knows something about busyness. We can’t wait to share this great interview with you today! You can learn more about Perfect, Inc. by going to www.perfectinc.org or follow them on Instagram @Perfectinc129RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOWDid you enjoy this episode? Ep 78EPISODE 77: Looking for our self worth in our to do lists
ELet’s Go Boldly into episode 6 and cross off finding self worth in our productivity. This week Tovah and Rielly talk all about the notion that our value and worth as humans is captured in what we can produce in a day. The idea that the more we put on our to do list and cross off by the end of the day, the more worthy we are, the more worthwhile we should feel. Rielly and Tovah are spending all season tackling the concept of tying our own self-worth to external factors. This week the focus is directed at the idea that we become so enamored with and tied to our to-do lists that they can become a crutch and a way to hide from our reality. The more we bury ourselves in busyness and lists, the less we focus on our present lived experience.Join the conversation today and consider all the ways in which you use your to do lists to avoid or deflect from what you really want out of your life. Don’t forget to rate, review and subscribe too!GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKGrab your journals. “How do you determine if your day was a success?” Do you think about it? Do you take an inventory? Ep 76EPISODE 75: Do you bury your “self” in the busyness of work?
E“Hustle culture carries this overarching belief that the more you do, the more valuable you are,” says Kate Northrup the founder of The Origin Company and the author of Do Less: Revolutionary Approach to Time and Energy Management. This week Rielly and Tovah dive into the big discussion of work, busyness, and the ever present “hustle culture.” People use work and the hustle culture as the filler for something that is out of whack in their lives. Outwardly, hustle culture seems like a high-energy-motivational movement that comes with expected rewards. For most people, working long hours is typically associated with moving up the corporate ladder faster, making six-figures in the shortest amount of time possible, or earning passive income due to around-the-clock hard work. It is the belief that you can succeed and achieve anything you want in life if you work hard enough. And if you don’t then It’s FOMO, but for work. The reality is, sometimes working hard isn’t enough, and chronic workaholism can be detrimental in the long run. If you aim for success and glory, whatever that may look like to you, know that working hard is part of it and not all of it.We ask a lot of questions in this episode. Why is everyone working so hard? What is influencing us to push harder, work longer, and beyond our limits? What are the consequences of working too much on our health? Finally we discuss what we can try to do as a society and individuals to reject hustle culture. This is an important conversation and one we are excited to share with you. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKPay attention to how often you see “hustle culture” show up in your day for the next weekNote how it makes you feel to see these concepts show up in your workplace, social media, friendships etc.Reach out to your accountability partner and discuss! Ep 74EPISODE 73: What do we mean when we say self-worth?
EIn this week’s episode Tovah and Rielly lay the groundwork for a discussion of self-worth throughout the upcoming season 6. They set out definitions and parameters around self-worth, self-esteem, and self-confidence. The underlying basis for the season is that our cultural focus on busyness keeps us trapped in thinking that our self-worth is tied to busyness and productivity.Join Rielly and Tovah as they examine the root of self-worth, how to dig into your own understanding of self-worth, and your connection to the larger world. The ability to recognize your worth as an intangible in existence regardless of action, regardless of doing, and merely because of your place as a being in the universe is fundamental to self-worth. Listen in as we walk through how self-worth is and importantly, is not, determined in our own lives. Think through how you experience and express your self-worth and what attachments you have to external sources of validation. Consider how your own busyness is tied to your understanding of worthiness and self-worth. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKTime to have a heart to heart with yourself and do some serious journaling. This may take days or weeks. That’s okay. Ask yourself:How would you describe your self-worth right now? What words would you use to describe yourself? What value did you place on yourself or aspects of yourself? Were your descriptions generally positive, balanced, or negative?Where did your messages around your worth come from? How did that feel? Head over to our social or reach out to your accountability partner to share your what that felt like. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOWDid you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Ep 73EPISODE 72: WHAT DO YOU WE MEAN WHEN WE SAY BUSYNESS?
E“The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you’re still a rat.” — Lily TomlinWe have made it to season 6 and we are excited to be here! Busyness and worthiness are two subjects we are very interested in talking about and discussing with you. At a foundational level, busyness is the experience of feeling like we have more to do than we have time or energy – that there is not much “space” in our lives. We are running from one task or meeting to another, often repeatedly throughout the day. Sound familiar? How did we get here as individuals? Or a society?Since the turn of the 20th century we, Americans, have begun to use busyness as a status symbol, despite knowing that this does not make us happier. We keep doing it. We define our worthiness by our productivity. We create our own busyness. We create it and thus we can make a change! The pandemic gave us a unique opportunity to see what happens when we can’t make ourselves busy, even if we wanted to. Although we did our best to try (sourdough starter anyone?).Rielly and Tovah kick off the new season with a discussion about all about busyness and worthiness. Don’t worry, we don’t just focus on the bad, we also focus on what we can do to step off the hamster wheel. We are excited for this season filled with hard conversations. We know you’re ready too!GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Time to check in with yourself. Feel free to journal or just think to yourself. Do an honest review of your life and ask: What is contributing to this sense of busyness in my life? Then ask: Who made the decisions that led to these commitments? And finally, ask (and answer): What can I do to reduce the busyness I’m experiencing? After spending time journaling, talk to your accountability partner. Ep 72EPISODE 71: How do I listen to my inner voice?
EWe Go Boldly continues our discussion of phase two of our inner voice work. How do we accept ourselves once we weed out the negative influences to our inner monologue, and do the deep dive into who we are at our core? Tovah and Rielly talk through methods for working on accepting all the facets of our person, allowing ourselves to be whole humans. Once we clear out the clutter of the noise around us, we can take time to look at the way that we talk to ourselves, the way that we feel about ourselves, and what to do with those feelings. Processing our emotions and allowing them to happen without judgment helps us to accept ourselves. That acceptance is a fundamental step in bringing our full and worthy selves to bear on our own lives. This kind of acceptance allows us to be prepared by our past rather than ruled by it.GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKTake the Back to You course! Listen to our original Inner Voice podcast. Ep 71EPISODE 70: Hearing and Listening to your Inner Voice
EWe have spent over a year talking about listening to your inner voice but what we really meant was that we should hear our inner voice and then we should work on listening to it. That is easier said than done. We are taking a mini-season to focus on the listening. Listening to our inner voice & hearing it are different. When you first hear your inner voice is not the same as hearing it and following it. We want to help transform your inner monologue. We dig deep into the science of it all to help find our way. Ep 65EPISODE 64: INTERNAL V. EXTERNAL TRANSFORMATIONS
EThis week Rielly and Tovah discuss the difference between internal and external transformations. Some transformations may change us deeply while others are more surface. Can we keep a transformation that is only surface? Is life one continuous transformation and we don’t notice it happening? What happens when we choose not to transform? Is that even an option? What prevents our transformations? How do you go about making personal transformations? How do you make sure your transformation is going in the right direction? As you can see there are a lot of questions this week and we do our best to answer them all. Join us as we take this deep dive into what transformation is and how we can make sure it lasts. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Journaling time! Look back in time and consider the ways in which you have transformed physically and/or internally. Ep 63EPISODE 62: IS TRANSFORMATION GRADUAL OR SUDDEN?
EWhat does transformation look like? We have been asking our guests this question week after week and this week we finally took the time to answer it ourselves. Deep inner transformations can happen in the most familiar and ordinary places and situations. While transformation is a continual process it can often feel like it happens all of a sudden. We hit bottom so hard and it feels like it takes so long to climb our way out. Why is that? Why can’t we transform all of a sudden? Sadly, the process of transformation is rarely a perfect, linear path that we walk through with grace and ease. What does transformation look like to you?Join us this week as we share what transformation looks like for us?GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKThink about transformation in your life. When you look back over your life did you realize it was happening over time or did it feel like it was happening suddenly? Looking forward, knowing that there will be more transformations, how would you apply lessons you learn from the past to those future experiences.Journal, talk it out with your accountability partner, and share what you find with us. Ep 61EPISODE 60: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE A CRISIS OF FAITH?
EDoubt and faith are interlinked so much and it is often when we have doubts that we need faith the most. This week we dive into the heart of what happens when we have our doubts and we have a crisis of faith. Whether those doubts are huge or small (yes, Tovah shares her concerns about not having a preferred type of coffee) we need to figure out how to move through our doubts. Whether you're religious or not, you can still lose faith. Losing faith might mean no longer believing in values you used to live by; not wanting to do the things that usually bring you joy or peace; not seeing the purpose or meaning of anything; no longer believing in your religion, or questioning parts of your religion; asking questions like "where is God now?" and "why is God allowing me to suffer?"Losing faith can be similar to grief but all is not lost, even if it feels like it is. Tovah and Rielly and the episode talking about what you can do help move through your doubt and find your faith again. As always we end with some homework and action items. Faith is a personal journey, join us as we talk this walk together!GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKGrab your journal again! Brainstorm some times in your life when you have dealt with times of doubt, whether in yourself, your experiences, your choices etc…Think about how you walked through that time of doubt and came out the other side. Ep 60EPISODE 59: FAITH & TRANSFORMATION WITH SHERYL HOLLAND
Last week on the We Go Boldly Podcast we did a deep dive into how to build a community with trust and vulnerability. We looked out how you can lead a faith community or even yourself by establishing trust. This week we continue the conversation on faith and transformation with a wonderful guest and Tovah’s longtime friend, Sheryl Holland. Our conversation starts out with an unexpected conversation all about finding your knowing and listening to your inner voice even at a very young age. What a treat! You will definitely want to listen in as we then continue to talk about the origin of faith and transformation on today’s episode. Sheryl was born, raised, and continues to live in Lancaster, PA. She attended and graduated from Mount Aloysius college with a degree in interpreting for the Deaf. Sheryl is a certified sign language interpreter, doing freelance work . Ep 59EPISODE 58: TRUST, VULNERABILITY, & COMMUNITY
“Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater meaning in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.” — Brené Brown We can’t have conversations about faith and transformation without trust and vulnerability coming up. This week we discuss how to build trust in ourselves and in our communities. It often means we have to be willing to get open and vulnerable. Vulnerability doesn’t come after trust — it precedes it. Leaping into the unknown, when done alongside others, causes the solid ground of trust to materialize beneath our feet. Like we begin our discussion with basic understanding of trust, vulnerability, and vulnerability based trust. Whether it is a faith group or a corporation the way to build trust is the same. We have all been in situations where we want to trust someone but there are red flags warning us not to. Join us as we dive deep and we challenge you to live your life with more mistakes and vulnerability so you are more willing to build trust in yourself and your community. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK To practice vulnerability in your home/community choose an opportunity where you could do so. This could be sharing a mistake with a friend that you wouldn’t normally do so or in an organization and setting an example for others, etc. Make yourself vulnerable in the eyes of others. Take action and reflect on what you learned. For example, how willing are you to take emotional risks? Share your experiences with your accountability partner or with us. You know where to find us! Ep 57EPISODE 56: WHERE DO YOU DERIVE YOUR FAITH FROM?
This week we look at where we find faith in our own communities and our own life. The role religion has played in our country and our lives has evolved over the last century. The need for faith however has not. Each generation finds spirituality somewhere different. We discuss how a lack of religion does not equate to a lack of faith. No matter whether your spiritual journey includes an organized religion or a private experience or both you need to know how to fill your own faith bucket? We share how we find faith in our own personal lives each and every day and give tips on how you can find it too. Don’t know what a faith bucket is? Listen to today’s episode to find out. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Consider your own systems of faith. Grab a journal and take some time to write out where your understanding/faith system began. Then consider how it has changed over time. What are the major contributing factors? Fill up your faith bucket with a list of things you can do during the day that might help you replenish your faith. Ep 55EPISODE 54: RELIGION, FAITH, & SOCIAL EXPECTATIONS
What do they say? Never talk politics, money, and religion? We never like to follow the rules anyway. This week we talk about religion and faith. While many people equate religion and faith we know that they are not the same. Some people look to religion for community or cultural significance. Some people look to the woods for their faith. As we embark on this season and explore faith journeys we want to make sure we all know that there is no judgment where we find our faith. We want to inspire you to listen to your inner voice and trust your heart. Find your faith where you can. Set your boundaries as you need to. Leave society’s expectations at the door. Where do you derive your faith from? How has religion impacted your life? GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Journal time! Reflect on how religion was part of your growing community and home growing up? In what ways have the expectations of your past experiences with religion affected your current faith journey? Share your experiences with your accountability partner or with us. Ep 54EPISODE 53: WHAT IS FAITH?
What is faith? Faith is so very personal to each of us, and in many ways defies definition. It is more than a religious doctrine or a set of beliefs. It is a feeling, intuition, depth of knowing inside of us that relates to our own experiences. When you have faith, you trust or believe in something very strongly. Some people have faith in a higher being, others put their faith behind the Red Sox. This episode will set the stage for a season where we explore what faith is to us and others as we invite guests on the podcast for the first time. We will also strive to answer, where does faith come from? What does faith mean to us? How can faith transform us? Just us today as we kick off this deep and exciting conversation. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK This season we are going to ask you to push your personal boundaries a bit. Not to distress, but maybe to a bit of discomfort. Grab a pen and a journal and dig in. Answer each of the following questions with the first thought that comes to mind Do you feel a sense of faith? Where do you feel it in your body? Is your faith connected to a place? How do you maintain your connection to god, the universe, the world at large? Is it easy, hard or somewhere in between? Put your answers down for now. Come back and re-read later. Share some with us in the comments to our insta post of this episode. Let us know how you experience faith in your everyday life. @goboldlytogether RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Ep 50EPISODE 49: ORGANIZATIONAL IDENTITY
Today we take identity out of the individual and into the organizational. In reality, it is so much of the same thing. When we dive into the topic of identity and how it applies to organizations, corporations and even international conglomerates at the core of the conversation is the who, what, and why of the entity. Join us as we talk all about identity formation as it pertains to organizations and corporate cultures. We explore the three elements that make up corporate identity: purpose, value, and culture. We dive deep into the larger context in which corporate identity impacts the ability of organizations to operate in the world, to influence social issues, and to have a positive economic outcome. Our conversation flows between general corporate culture and the new way in which corporations are influencing and being influenced by society and shifting cultural norms. We discuss the impact of social justice issues on corporate culture and vice versa. Tune in for an exciting discussion of identity and modern corporate culture. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Look at your purchasing habits in your household. Are they impacted by social causes? In what ways? Are there ways you could change how you spend money to make a social impact? Ep 49EPISODE 48: LABELS & IDENTITY
“I used to worry about the labels others placed on me … until I realized my limitations weren’t coming from their labels, but from my own.” –Steve Maraboli This week we jump right into a discussion on labels and how they help and how they hurt us. The tendency to label ourselves and others can blur the lines between truth and fiction. It can create tension between who we think we are supposed to be and who we actually are. This can often mean that we can grow as people and not even realize it. While we might need labels to distinguish things, to create some form of order, labels can often do more harm than good. We do it to others, and we do it to ourselves. Whether positive or negative, what we whisper to ourselves every day has a great influence on our self-concept, and dictates the direction of our thoughts and actions. We are what we think we are. We talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of levels but we also talk about how labels can be used to serve us. Join us this week and let us know what labels you’re willing to let go and what labels you are ready to EMBRACE! GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Make a list of all the identities you can think of that you and others have used to define you. Under each label, make bullet points describing how you show up and show you are "supposed" to show up in each identity. Cross out the ones that don’t serve you. Are their holes? What’s missing? Ep 48EPISODE 47: STORYTELLING AND IMPACT ON IDENTITY
C.S. Lewis once said: "In great literature, I become a thousand different men but still remain myself." Storytelling is a passageway to another world where we can become more than we understood before we stepped forward. Once we understand, we cannot then un-understand. The beauty of stories is their capacity to expand our world and our lives. We may remain ourselves, but not ourselves untouched. Join us on the podcast today as we dive deep into one of our greatest joys and passions, stories and how they have the power to impact us all. We continue the season-long conversation on identity, from formation to transformation to maintenance. We are covering as many bases as we can find along the way. Today is no exception, though it is one of my personal favorites. We talk about the power of story to transform, expose, uplift, deconstruct, and expand the lives of individuals and cultures over time. Tune in to the We Go Boldly podcast anywhere you find your favorite podcasts. Do us a huge favor while you're at it and save, share and like this post. Don’t forget to do the homework at the end and let us know how it goes! We are all on this brave and bold journey together! How did you feel after? Spend some time writing about the experiences that have moved you the most. The books, movies, plays, and other fictional stories and characters that impact your life. As always, reach out to your accountability partner to compare notes. Ep 47EPISODE 46: FINDING JOY AND NOT LOSING OUR IDENTITY
This time of year is filled with joy and often fraught with stress. We have spent all year digging deep and listening to our inner voice and focusing on ensuring we find and hold onto our identities in the face of challenges. Now is not the time to lose ourselves. Holidays allow for the opportunity to build our family identity through family traditions. Cultivating family identity can be an anchor for you. Family identity can be reinforced by actually naming the traditions you do. They have a magical way of instilling family identity. In this week’s episode, Rielly and Tovah jump feet first into the holiday season with equal amounts of excitement and apprehension. Growing up neither one would describe their holidays as a “Walton Family Christmas” but it allows them to decide what traditions they create for their families. They talk about their own traditions, setting boundaries, holding onto our identities, and yes, finding joy this holiday season. Join us as you are preparing for this December. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Think about what would make your December great. Related to holidays or otherwise. List 3 things that you really want to do. List 3 things that you really don’t want to do. Involve our family and friends in this process if that is helpful. Try to figure out a plan to make these things happen and set yourself up for success this December. Ep 45EPISODE 45: IMPACT OF RELATIONSHIPS ON IDENTITY
Have you ever wondered why some people help you find yourself and with some people you lose yourself? Relationships can impact our identity by changing the size of our sense of self. It can expand, to include new traits or to make existing traits more prominent but it can also cause certain aspects of the self to be lost. Rielly and Tovah get a little extra personal when they talk about how their relationships have expanded their lives and taught them when they needed to reconnect with their own identity. Friendships, relationships and setting boundaries is the name of the game. Learning to continue to find yourself through new adventures and new people rather than lose yourself. We continue our focus of the season on how we can work to maintain our identity while still blossoming in relationships. Come for the heart to heart stories and stay for the tips. Join us as we try to live our limitless lives. Ep 44EPISODE 44: OUR JOBS ARE NOT WHO WE ARE
Did you know that Smith is still the most popular name? Over time a person's job was their defining feature, literal identity. While we aren’t named after our job these days we are often too tied to them and too enmeshed in them. Many of us have come to actually define ourselves by our occupations – which often comes at our own expense. On today’s episode Tovah and Rielly get personal when they talk about jobs and identity. They have both struggled with separating their identity from their jobs. Why is it not okay to be completely connected with your job? It makes it harder to connect with people who aren’t a part of your working life. If you define yourself by your work, any failure can cause a crisis of identity. Listen this week to learn ways to diversify your life and ensure your job is something you do and not something you are. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Check in with yourself. Do you think about work a lot when you are not there? Are you likely to bring it up in the first few minutes of a conversation? Would you describe yourself and your self worth as too enmeshed with your identity? Think on it and journal on it if it helps. Journal a list and talk with your accountability partner how you can diversify yourself. Go do the things. We just launched the Defining You Course at the beginning of this month. Taking the plunge and writing your personal mission statement is a great opportunity to start that process. Look deep into your inner world to learn more about who you are, and importantly who you want to be going forward. Having a personal mission statement is a little like having a map, or at least some road signs to help you along the way. Your mission statement is meant to help you better understand yourself, keep you focused on who you are at your core, and who you want to be. When life throws you curves, as it always will, your mission statement can help you stay steady and navigate all the ups and downs. Head over to our Instagram bio to sign up for our course. Ep 43EPISODE 43: PARENTHOOD: LOSING & FINDING YOURSELF
When Tovah and Rielly thought about starting a podcast they knew they would talk about parenting a lot. They didn’t realize it would take 43 episodes until they would finally have an episode entirely devoted to parenthood. It only makes sense that parenthood comes up during a season about identity. There are so many different layers to consider with respect to how our identity will be impacted over time and all the different stages of parenthood. It is so easy to lose ourselves in parenthood. As many parents, or anyone who has been around small children, would agree, parenthood in the beginning is all consuming physically, emotionally, and in literally every single way. Each level of parenthood is a massive transition - we don’t always realize that it is happening or what it is doing to us as individuals. It is so easy to forget about ourselves along the way. We share our own experiences and then we talk about what we do to make sure we don’t lose ourselves forever. Join us for one of the longest, but most favorite, discussions. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Whether or not you are a parent, this week take some time to consider major life transitions that you have experienced. Where have you struggled to maintain your sense of self? Where have you felt strong in your identity? Take some time to journal on those experiences, and reach out to your accountability partner to discuss. Finally, consider adding in daily mantras to your morning routine to help you set yourself up for a healthier mindset. Did you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Ep 42EPISODE 42: UNDERSTANDING YOUR PURPOSE
“The world is waiting for you to pursue your purpose.” “Find your purpose” looks great on a poster or on a decorative wooden plaque but what does it really mean? And more importantly can it mean anything if you don’t know who you are? Rielly and Tovah discuss the importance of learning who you are first before figuring out what you should be doing with your life. Lacking a clearly defined sense of self, or identity, often makes it tough to know exactly what you want. They continue their deep dive into their conversation about identity. How well do you know yourself? Do you say yes to make others happy? What are your values? Do you live your life accordingly? Awareness of personal values can go a long way toward outlining your sense of self. As always, they end with action items. Let’s figure out how to build that sense of self! GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Check out our free course, if you haven’t already, which focuses on finding your inner voice. In fact if you have done it before, try it again. Ep 41EPISODE 41: HOLDING ONTO YOUR IDENTITY DURING TRANSITIONS
“The only thing that is constant is change.”― Heraclitus There is nothing inherently wrong with transitions, in fact transitions are exciting and can lead to wonderful growth but...every transition can cause unexpected stress. This week Tovah and Rielly, who both handle change very differently, discuss how we maintain our identities while living through life’s major transitions. Change can impact how we view the world and ourselves. How do we handle change so we can embrace change and celebrate it? We dive deep into answering that question. Finding calm in our lives and ensuring we are compassionate with ourselves, even when it's hard is so important. Making sure we have calm in our lives before the storm is how we can prepare. How do you deal with transition in your life? GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Brainstorm some ways to integrate moments of calm into your life. Try to integrate at least one calming moment into your week. Ep 40EPISODE 40: WHAT KIND OF PERSON DO YOU WANT TO BE?
How are you living a life and identifying your identity? Are you honoring your personal identity? How do you determine what kind of person you are? These are the questions that help us determine our core values and who we truly are. Rielly and Tovah discuss this and more in episode 4 of season 4. As it often does, the conversation comes back to a discussion of our inner voice. We want to stop asking kids what they want to be when they grow up and ask them who they are. Identity is not focused on what you do for a living, or how you spend your time, or what kinds of things you own. Who we are starts with understanding ourselves, who we want to be, and why. Ep 39EPISODE 39: SHAKE OFF THE NOISE
To be nobody but yourself in a world that is doing its best, day and night, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting. ~ e.e. cummings What happens when we aren’t sure who we are? What happens when who we are is challenged? When well formed, our identity allows us to move through the world as individuals who form healthy and strong relationships. We need to shake off the noise impacting our sense of self. How do we do that? Tovah and Rielly discuss how we do that in our lives and how we help others do it as well. This season is all about getting to know ourselves and strengthening our identities. Reading books, volunteering, and journaling are just a start. We discuss all of the ways we can strengthen our own identities so we can handle the bumps in the road. Ep 38EPISODE 38: FINDING OUR IDENTITY
Our job is to keep telling our stories. This week, and this whole season, Rielly and Tovah dive in and discuss the concept of identity. What does identity mean? How is it formed? There are parts of our identity that we are born with and other parts that we grow into. Rielly and Tovah consider how our identity or identities are authentic to who we are. A hunger for authenticity guides us in every age and aspect of life. It drives our explorations of work, relationships, play, and prayer. Ep 37EPISODE 37: FINDING YOUR INNER VOICE
In today’s episode we are kicking off season 4 by going back to the beginning and are going to be talking about our inner voice. What it means and why we are getting into the “woo” today. We’re reconnecting with our identity and the first step means that we are connecting to our innervoice. We also want to share our thoughts on perfectionism, being authentic, setting goals, how life sometimes distracts us, and setting realistic expectations for ourselves. Ep 36EPISODE 36: FINDING FORGIVENESS
“Without forgiveness, we remain tethered to the person who harmed us. We are bound with chains of bitterness, tied together, trapped. Until we can forgive the person who harmed us, that person will hold the keys to our happiness; that person will be our jailor. When we forgive the person who harmed us, we take back control of our own fate and our feelings. We become our own liberators. We don’t forgive to help the other person. We don’t forgive for others. We forgive for ourselves. Forgiveness, in other words, is the best form of self-interest. This is true both spiritually and scientifically.” - Archbishop Desmond Tutu Forgiveness is a conscious, deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group who has harmed you, regardless of whether they actually deserve your forgiveness. It does not mean forgetting and it does not necessarily mean repairing a relationship. This week we dive into the concept of forgiveness and how much effort it takes and how hard it is to practice. Fortunately there are many benefits to forgiving for your mental and physical health. It is worth the effort. Forgiveness brings the forgiver peace of mind and frees us from corrosive anger. We discuss why we need to practice forgiveness and how we do it. It's not an easy task and it's not an easy subject to discuss. It is necessary to live in an empathetic world. The more we are able to practice forgiveness the more space we have to practice empathy. Join us on this difficult, but oh so important, discussion. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Take some time to reflect on things that you carry with you, resentments and shame that you feel toward yourself. Write down what you are feeling. Ep 35EPISODE 35: MIRACLES AND MOVING MOMENTS
EPISODE 11: MIRACLES AND MOVING EXPERIENCES Albert Einstein said that, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” What about you? Do you believe in miracles? Have you had moments in your life that have moved you or inspired you? A moment that has deeply impacted such as an outstanding sunrise or the birth of a child, fleeting song. These are moments in our lives that cause us to change course. Moments that move us to act, that stick with turning points or pivotal moments. In today’s episode we talk about miracles and moving moments and how they can show us that the universe is connected. These profound moments in our lives often connect us more intimately and deeply with the larger sense of humanity. That connection provides us with room to build collective empathy. The more that we can connect to our larger sense of the world the more we can empathize with the people around us What do you think? Share some of your miracles and moving moments with us? GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Spend some quiet reflection thinking about the times in your life that had a real impact. What do you remember? Smells, sounds, colors, songs, places, people? Ep 34EPISODES 34: Signs from the Universe
Synchronicities are markers of soul guidance. Have you ever thought “that was the strangest thing. That can’t be a coincidence?” Those moments are what we focus on and talk about in this week’s episode. The Universe sends signs every day showing us that we are connected to it and to each other, we only have to be open to seeing them. Synchronicity signs let you know that you're on the right track. This concept of synchronicity is not a new concept but comes from the psychotherapist Carl Jung. In his work, he used the idea to refer to seeing multiple signs that held significance to both him and his therapy clients. We spend time talking about what signs might show up? Perhaps in the form of an animal, a missing object, a number pattern. Maybe for you it is the experience of deja vu, an unexplained song, or a chill. What do they mean? Is the Universe truly guiding us? We could look at the universe as if we are all alone and it is a dog-eat-dog society or we could look at it that we are all connected. How do you see our role in the universe? Lastly we talk about how we can open ourselves up to see the signs. Are you ready to tune into the signs and synchronicities in your life? Join us as we take a serious look at a really fun topic. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Keeping your eyes open for signs. Journal about a moment in your past when you have experienced a sign, an emotional experience, what did it mean to you? Incorporate a way throughout your week to start being more aware of signs from the Universe. Talk to your accountability partner and share your experiences in the past or recently. Buckle up friends, this is a good one. We dig in deep learning about resilience and strength. Resilience involves the ability to recover and rebound from challenges and setbacks. While it may seem that some people are naturally better than others we’ve come to realize that we can build our resilience. Like building a muscle, increasing your resilience takes time and intentionality. Being resilient means facing difficulties head-on instead of falling into despair or using unhealthy coping strategies. We focus on the many ways we can build resilience as an individual and of course, a community. While resilience is so important in adults it is equally as important in children. Join us as we share many ways to help our kids become more resilient. The good news is that we can all build resilience without going through trauma. Once we build resilience we are capable of so much more than we ever imagined. WE GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Resiliency is like building muscle, this week we are going to practice. Take one or two skills that build resiliency and add them to your week. Share with your accountability what you tried and how it worked. Let us know how you had some resiliency into our life on our socials. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Ep 31EPISODE 31: BEING HIGHLY SENSITIVE IN AN OVERWHELMING WORLD
It’s all about being sensitive on this episode of We Go Boldly as we talk through the idea of what it means to be a highly sensitive person in an overwhelming world. We delve into the definitions of sensitive, insensitive, and highly sensitive as a personality trait as defined by Elaine Aron many years ago. We talk through some of the science behind personality traits and how high sensitivity impacts us as individuals. The cultural impact of how we view sensitivity as individuals and then as a larger culture come into play as well. We examine how our own bias impacted our research, our responses, and how we went about unravelling that bias as highly sensitive people. Some of the key benefits to being highly sensitive are increased intuition, creativity, adaptability and capacity for empathy. Highly sensitive people are often more deeply impacted by sensory input. They think and feel deeply, and look for meaning in their lives. Some people believe that highly sensitive individuals tend to seek out more spiritual answers and connections. On the flip side of that there are some challenges to being sensitive, outside of the typical stereotyping and cultural stigmatization. Highly sensitive people are predisposed to sensory overload and need more time to themselves. They also are more prone to perfectionism, being deeply impacted by conflict, and overwhelmed by the expectations of others. Developing and maintaining healthy boundaries becomes extremely important for people with this personality trait. For anyone who expresses sensitivity, whether a highly sensitive person or otherwise, society often puts stigma and negative connotations on such expression. We often hear sensitivity equated with weakness or being “too sensitive.” People equate sensitivity in women with hysteria and delicate natures prone to overreacting. All of this is a reaction to discomfort, and not the discomfort of the sensitive person. Rather the discomfort of the reacting individual. Sensitivity is not as taboo as it once was, but we still have a long way to go. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Grab your device. Ep 30EPISODE 30: PRACTICING ACCEPTANCE CAN TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE
Every week this season we are approaching empathy from a different and sometimes difficult perspective. Acceptance is hard. Acceptance means embracing reality. It is a willingness to experience things as they are, instead of insisting that they be as you want them to be. It is only with acceptance that we can truly embrace change and practice empathy. Acceptance allows you to move on instead of being perpetually stuck in a quagmire of “should haves” and “would haves”. We reflect on our own hesitancy with acceptance and the steps we can take to achieve it. As with everything else, acceptance takes continue practice and hard work. Join us for this week and we can do the hard work to build collective empathy. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Journal time: Where in your life could you be more accepting? EIther inwardly or outwardly? Journal time: Think back to a time when you were not accepting? How would it have been easier and so how can you apply it to your life today? Check our Instagram stories for some mediation suggestions. If you’re up to it, share with us on social. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode?
