Ep 28EPISODE 28: SHOWING EMPATHY IN A WORLD OF STRUGGLE

“Hope is a function of struggle.” - Brene Brown “The struggle is real.” We see this in social media, on mugs, on t-shirts. It’s overused and often shows a lack of understanding of actual struggle. In this episode we dig deep into the concept of true struggle and our need for empathy. When we ask “How are you?” we need to really mean it. Beyond individually, empathy is necessary in order for us to be able to provide help and advocate collectively. America is a country in deep pain. We need to create safe spaces. Allow for different journeys. Be open to difficult conversations. We need to build collective empathy. Join us as we take a closer look at what true struggle is and how we can help. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Journal on what your organization is doing to practice empathy? What can you do to add more empathy? What about in your individual life? Talk to your accountability and share your experiences and thoughts with adding empathy into your lives. Join us on our social channels to share your thoughts and experiences on how you are taking part in the movement for collective empathy. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? Ep 27EPISODE 27: NICE IS NOT KIND, AND KIND DOES NOT ALWAYS FEEL NICE

Welcome to Episode 3 of Season 3 on We Go Boldly, and today we are talking about Nice versus Kind. We are looking closely at how to create a more empathetic society by taking a hard look at our own understanding and application of niceness and kindness. Niceness is usually transactional in nature. Nice people do things for people with the expectation that we will get something in return, or that we will be more liked and/or included in a group. Often people mask their true feelings or desires in order to seem more nice and agreeable. People pleasers are nice. The niceness we are referring to grows out of insecurity and a need to be liked more than a need to Kindness is grounded in love, compassion and empathy for others or for yourself. When we act with kindness, we are giving or doing without thought for what we might receive in return. Sometimes when we do or say something with kindness, it can feel uncomfortable for us and the people around us. Kindness thrives in people with good boundaries, empathy, and societal understanding. Many people confuse niceness for kindness and vice versa. For years we were told to “be nice,” “mind our manners,” and “be polite.” All too often we hear things like don’t bring up religion or politics in polite conversation. This can be a form of toxic niceness, not rocking the boat for the sake of the comfort of others, and people pleasing at the expense of standing up for your own personal ethics. Importantly, we need to learn to be kind to ourselves as well as the larger world. Starting with ourselves and growing outward helps create the kind of collective empathy we are talking about this season. The ability to talk to ourselves with love, compassion and kindness. To create real boundaries and stand up for what is right, even in the discomfort, begins to weave the thread that will help make up the collective empathy as we all work together. “A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.” - Amelia Earhart GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Break out your journal! Ep 26EPISODE 26: FINDING EMPATHY

Maya Angelou once said, "I think we all have empathy. We may not have enough courage to display it." Join us this week as we dig deep into empathy. As always we start with the definition of empathy and why we find it so important. We look at empathy from both the individual perspective and the greater societal perspective. It matters in situations both large and small. Not ones to shy away from a little research we share what we learned about cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and cognitive empathy. The difference between sympathy and empathy can be confusing and so we take apart each issue to understand why we need more empathy, not sympathy, in the world. Lastly, we focus on how to cultivate empathy in our own lives and in our children. No surprise that the concept of books and reading comes up and is discussed. Join us this week and share your thoughts on empathy with us! GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Take an empathy inventory. Look back and see how you have handled other people’s challenges in the last day, week, month. We can all benefit from practicing empathy. Pick one of the ways we discussed to cultivate empathy and practice. Discuss with your accountability partner and let us know how its going on our social. Ep 23EPISODE 23: CONNECTING TO MIND, BODY,AND SPIRIT

“Connection is the experience of oneness. It’s having shared experiences, relatable feelings, or similar ideas. It is the feeling of belonging to something greater than oneself.” We are back with part two of our conversation on connection. Life, parenthood, schooling, career, marriage, can make it hard to keep the sense of connection between body, mind, and spirit. Life becomes a series of check marks. The loss of connection makes it harder to hear your inner voice, to feel your purpose, to be open to the possibilities of the universe. We talk about our struggles finding and maintaining connection both with our inner voice and with the outerworld. Music, art, shared experiences, and help keep the connection were especially necessary during the pandemic. Join us as we dive back in and discuss connections. Head over to our socials to tell us how you maintain connect. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Grab your journal! Ep 22EPISODE 22: OUR NEED FOR CONNECTION

“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” -John Muir This week we kick off part one of our two part conversation on connection. Our connection to mind, body and spirit guides us. As humans we need to feel a sense of connection to something, whether it is a larger universe, God, the Earth, other people or something unique. This need relates to belonging, soul, spirit, self worth, doubt, fear, love, kindness. We find connection in grounding, prayer, meditation, group activities, friendship, and relationships. We also take a look at how the pandemic created space to stop and recognize our need for true connection, rather than the incidental connections in the normal world. The pandemic created a space for many to stop and turn inward. Rielly and Tovah look at how they also looked outward for the connection. This worldwide pandemic brought out a sense of community and empathy and a sense of oneness. Join us for this part one and connect with us with your thoughts on how you forge a true connection with yourself and the world. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Grab your journal! Ep 21EPISODE 21: AUTHENTICITY, CONNECTING YOUR INNER AND OUTER WORLD

In this week’s episode we are talking about authenticity and living an authentic life. When we live an authentic life our actions and words, and our beliefs and values act in alignment. In order to achieve this kind of alignment we have to do the hard work of understanding ourselves first. When we are able to tune in to our inner voice, understand our purpose, hear our deeper selves then we can connect our inner world with our outer expression of self. That is how we live an authentic life. So often as children we are trained to adapt our personality to fit in with the people around us and to be more likeable. We change to fit social norms and expectations. We change to meet the needs of our loved ones. Somewhere along the way we lose sight of who we are or who we are meant to be. Bringing that person to the surface allows us to live a happier, more limitless life. Authenticity allows us to feel comfortable in our own bodies, confident in our beliefs and decisions, and ready to walk through life in our purpose. We are all able to accomplish this by raising our awareness and listening to what we truly need. Today we will talk all about methods and means to overcome the urge to adapt our personalities to fit in and live an authentic life. We give tips and tricks, as well as steps to take to help unwind some of the lifetime of conditioning. As always this is a process and it is an ongoing experience. Tune in to hear our discussion on authenticity and how we can connect our inner and outer worlds. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Take a moment to do a mental inventory - scan through your body and notice how you feel emotionally & physically. Grab your journal and think back to the last time you did something that felt like it didn’t align with what you believe or what you want, for whatever reason. It could be in your personal life, or at work. Take some time to describe before, during, and after it happened. Describe it physically and emotionally if you can. Set aside your journal for some time and then go back and read through what you wrote. Take some time to consider what your authentic self wanted versus what your adaptive self did. Consider an alternative solution. Journal out what that would look and feel like. Reach out to your accountability partner and talk it through. Ep 20EPISODE 20: LETTING GO SO WE CAN LIVE

EPISODE 20: LETTING GO SO WE CAN LIVE “To let go does not mean to get rid of. To let go means to let be. When we let be with compassion, things come and go on their own.” –Jack Kornfield On today’s episode we talk about letting go and surrendering. What do we need to let go? Outcomes? Control? Other People? We try to control things because of what we think will happen if we don’t. In other words, control is rooted in fear. We’ve talked in the past about our perfection and our need to listen to our inner voice. What does that mean? It means we need to let go and surrender. Holding on to pain/control doesn’t fix anything. Replaying the past over and over again doesn’t change it, and wishing things were different doesn’t make it so. The key to success is in letting go, releasing our grip, and surrendering our need to figure everything out ourselves. This is how we find our way to authenticity. We talk about what we have had to do to work towards letting go. As with most things it’s an ongoing process. Listen in to hear our conversation on surrendering and where we find peace with the Universe. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Take a deep breath. Thinking about what you may be holding onto. Is it control? Is there a past relationship? Do some deep listening. Then imagine what it would be like if you let go of what you are holding onto. Journal about what they would feel like. Talk to your accountability partner about letting go and surrendering. What/who do you surrender to? RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Ep 19EPISODE 19: FAILING TOWARDS HAPPINESS

This week we talk all about failure and how it’s not such a bad thing. It's true that you risk failure if you try something bold because you might miss it. But you also risk failure if you stand still and don't try anything new.. Embrace adversity and make failure a regular part of your life. If you're not failing, you're probably not really moving forward. The less you venture out, the greater your risk of failure. Ironically the more you risk failure — and actually fail — the greater your chances of success. If you are succeeding in everything you do, then you're probably not pushing yourself hard enough. And that means you're not taking enough risks. You risk because you have something of value you want to achieve. You are not a failure. You failed. If any of these statements make you feel uncomfortable, time for you to join us on this week’s episode. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Get out that journal. Think about the last time you failed. Did you stop trying because you failed, or did you fail because you stopped trying? Try something new. Something that you will probably not be great at it and let it be a challenge. How did it make you feel? Share with your accountability partner about your experience. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Ep 1718: THE CURSE OF PERFECTIONISM

Today we dive into a topic that is near and dear to both our hearts. We have both dealt with and continue to deal with perfectionism in our lives and like to think of ourselves as recovering perfectionists. Perfectionism is not is not striving for excellence. Perfectionism is not self-improvement. Despite that we see the desire to be perfect can often overtake other goals. Tune in today to hear how we talk about our own experiences with perfectionism, both how we deal with those feelings and where they come from. The steps we take as we practice parenting perfectionists. How finding and listening to our authentic self can help deal with our perfectionism? All this and more on today’s show. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Look back and think about the most recent time you may have set unrealistic goals for yourself. Was it a small expectation you set for a day or was it a larger goal? Journal how you did. What was your motivation? How did you deal with that then? Talk to your accountability partner. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? Ep 1617: Belonging with Authenticity and Self Acceptance

Belonging is the innate human desire to be part of something larger than us. Because this yearning is so primal, we often try to acquire it by fitting in and by seeking approval, which are not only hollow substitutes for belonging, but often barriers to it. Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance. – Brené Brown This week we take a closer look at what it means to truly belong. To have a sense of belonging. This is more than just sitting in a room surrounded by people. Belonging is not merely “fitting in.” Belonging is a feeling that you are accepted and a welcome and included part of the larger group as you are right now without exception. In order to have true belonging we must be our authentic selves. Belonging is fundamental to our connection and sense of self worth. To find true belonging we must work on our sense of acceptance. We must continue to do the hard work of listening to our inner voice and connecting to our authentic selves. Belonging does not mean changing yourselves to fit in the group but it does mean that you be open and be accepting of others. Belonging is important on a personal level but it also has larger implications in communities, workplaces and schools. To truly welcome others we need to be able to provide a place that they can be themselves without having to change. By showing up as our authentic self we make it safe and open for others to show up as their authentic selves. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Take a mental inventory of where/when you feel most connected; when do you feel least connected? Journal prompt: set a timer for 10 minutes and describe in detail your ideal group interaction. How many people are there? What are you doing? How does it feel? Where are you? Create a calendar reminder for sometime in the next week to start building your ideal interaction/group. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? Ep 1516: SETTING BOUNDARIES TO FREE YOURSELF

This week we tackle setting boundaries. Setting boundaries is the key to being able to be your most authentic self and live a truly limitless life. Boundaries aren’t just a sign of a healthy relationship; they’re a sign of self-respect. So give yourself the permission to set boundaries and work to preserve them. It’s important for all of us to have personal boundaries. They dictate how we approach relationships with friends and acquaintances. Our boundaries help us live in-tune with our desires, needs, and feelings. They help us be our authentic selves. It’s no one’s responsibility to make you happy, just like you are not responsible for anyone else’s happiness. We use boundaries to discard the world’s expectations and live our own free life. Boundaries help us navigate relationships with friends, families, and in your work. Boundaries are not easy to set for anyone and we know that. We live that. We do a deep dive into the how-tos of setting boundaries. What you need to practice and what support you need to establish. Join us, free yourself by setting boundaries! GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Practice saying “No, thanks.” Journal about your feelings when saying no. How did it feel? What feelings came up? Use your accountability partner to practice setting boundaries within your relationship. Did you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Ep 1415: WOMEN AND ANGER: AUTHENTICITY MEANS ALL THE FEELINGS

Women are taught from early on that anger is ugly and inappropriate. Certainly not ladylike. On this week’s episode we take a close look at what it means to be angry as a woman, as a parent, as a member of our society. We discuss what we were told about anger as children and how that influenced how we showed ourselves to the world. Suppressing anger can be dangerous, both to an individual and society and yet we continue to reward women for hiding their anger. Why is anger so important? Why is a necessary feeling disregarded for women? Why is anger so threatening? Join us as we dig deep to answer these questions. As Soraya Chemaly says, “A society that does not respect women’s anger is one that does not respect women, not as human beings, thinkers, knowers, active participants, or citizens.” We are building a limitless society and to do so we must allow anger its place. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Take some quiet time for yourself with your journal and answer these writing prompts: When were you angry last? What did you do about it? How did that make you feel? Catch up with your accountability partner and talk about the things that make you angry and how you express that anger Revisit your journal and see how it matches up to your conversation RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? Ep 1314: FEELING ALL THE FEELINGS

Today we are feeling all the things! On this episode of We Go Boldly Podcast we are talking about living authentically by allowing yourself to feel your feelings. Tune in and join us as we walk through what it means to feel all of your feelings, and allow yourself the time and space to experience the fullness of your emotional life. We dive into how to start noticing and being aware of what you are feeling. Naming and identifying your feelings accurately allows you to begin connecting with your highest purpose. We remind our listeners that feelings are a process, they are not always logical, and that you can have conflicting feelings. It is in reality normal to feel conflicting feelings! Beyond the initial process of identifying and accepting that you are in fact feeling something, we look deeply at what it means to have emotional integrity, and to be vulnerable. We talk through the idea that in order to be authentic and live a limitless life, we need to allow ourselves the opportunity to feel and process what is happening in your life. When we tune into our true feelings we also make room for our intuition to step forward and guide our decisions. We open our lives to the influence and power of the world around us, without allowing it to take over. As we start to allow in feelings that we may have been denying or ignoring for a long time it can be challenging to find a balance. We remind our listeners that feeling our feelings is not the same as being consumed by our feelings. Throughout, we talk about how to process all these feelings you are now letting in to your head and heart. We run through suggestions from finding a professional therapist to help you with big concerns that crop up to starting your own journaling, art, or meditation practice to work through your feelings. At the end of the day, your feelings affect you both physically and mentally. It is essential to a limitless life that you learn to identify, process, and move through the whole breadth of feelings. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Revisit clearing the clutter from your mind Take time out during the day and start noticing your feelings, keep a journal handy and jot down what you notice or keep a voice memo for yourself If it feels safe to do so without the advice of a professional, start to focus on one of the emotions or feelings that you noticed from your day that maybe you pushed to the side. Give yourself permission to look at that feeling without judging it or letting it take over RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Ep 1213: THE SCIENCE OF GRATITUDE AND WHY PRACTICING IT MATTERS

Today we talk about gratitude. We hear a lot about gratitude in the world, whether it is a gratitude journal or the concept of practicing gratitude. We take a deep dive to look at what gratitude truly is and why it is good for us. Gratitude is not the same as toxic positivity or finding a silver lining. Gratitude involves noticing the goodness in the world, but it doesn’t mean being blind to the tough stuff or the mess that can get all of us. Gratitude builds emotional resilience and flexibility by helping you see the positive things in life. It can help you stay grounded and accept whatever your present situation is. Gratitude can benefit your relationships and your career. Beyond that gratitude leads to significant benefits in all parts of your life including benefits to your physical health. The practice of gratitude can affect your brain function, reduce your stress hormones and help manage the autonomic nervous system function, significantly reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. How do you practice gratitude? We cover that too. We talk about consistency, gratitude journals, and ways to say thank you to your friends, family and the universe. We share how we practice gratitude and our lives and what a difference it has made. Join us today! RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Ep 1112. FINDING GUIDANCE and CONNECTION in the SILENCE and SPACE of MEDITATION

In today’s episode we ask you, where do you find your connection? We ask you this because in order to hear your inner voice and connect to your authentic self you are often required to find the silence and shut out the noise. Silence is what allows you to hear yourself more clearly and to hear the world around you. As you search for silence you may find that your mind is more cluttered than you realized. Or you may have found that the voices that are the loudest in your mind are not actually your own. Those voices could be society as a whole or a certain person in your history or current life. It is the silence that can give you the peace to let you focus on your own thoughts. Meditation comes in many forms and allows you to connect to the silence. It allows you to turn inward in a deep way and connect both with yourself and your sense of spirituality. Meditation is considered a type of mind-body complementary medicine. Meditation can produce a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind. You can meditate with a purpose - to calm yourself, soothe anxiety, release stress, alleviate pain etc. Meditation can simply be used to help you become more mindful of what is going on inside your own body and mind - to notice. The process of mediation is filled with trial and errors and false starts. Grounding is another way to find silence in your life and gives you an opportunity to deepen your connection to the earth and the natural world. When we ground ourselves, we’re calming or slowing down our emotions and getting more in touch with our internal and external worlds. Grounding our energy can be helpful when we feel either unbalanced or nervous. Being grounded also means that we’re more mindful with respect to our environment. Join us as we talk about how we have failed and succeeded at integrating both meditation and grounding into our lives. Did you enjoy this episode? Ep 910: MAKING CONNECTIONS THROUGH RELATIONSHIP

In today’s episode of We Go Boldly we are talking about relationships, friendship, and finding people to lift us up. Join us as we wrap up Season One and discuss what happens when you start listening to your inner voice and begin to make changes in your life. What happens to relationships when you become the more authentic version of yourself. We look at what makes healthy and happy relationships. Making sure you are getting and giving in equal parts so you both benefit and grow from the friendship. As you learn more you will make decisions about how you are serving others and how your friends are serving you. We also talk about the importance of setting boundaries in our relationships. Boundaries are as much for yourself as they are for others. While making friends as an adult can be difficult, the best part about making new friends is an ability to create healthier friendship patterns. New friendships give you a fresh start, the opportunity to learn from past friend relationships and forge new ones that have even stronger ties. You can find the friends who will most compliment you and help you achieve a more fulfilling life, people who you can be there for, too. We share our personal struggles and challenges with finding friends who are supporting. Learning the lesson that if someone looks down upon your goals that is more a reflection on them than you. Friends can be there for your joy and heartache as well as your successes. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK This week we want you to make a friend's inventory, either in your head or grab your notebook. Figure out the friends that you would like to reconnect with and the friends whom you need to disconnect. When you have your list of friends to reconnect with, send a text or a note. Share your gratitude. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? We would love to hear your thoughts. Head to Apple Podcasts and then rate, review, and subscribe. Ep 89: ADAPTABILITY IN A WORLD OF CONFORMITY

In today’s episode of We Go Boldly we are talking about adaptability. Dive in with us as we discuss the differences and intersections between being adaptable, flexible, and resilient. When you develop your ability to adapt to changing circumstances, life becomes easier and more navigable. Changing your mindset from one of being set in your ways to one where you are curious and seek out new experiences and information can open your world. We also discuss how adaptable people are able to see the entire playing field rather than focusing solely on the current moment and situation. This enables a growth mindset to flourish. We share our personal trials and tribulations in adjusting and adapting both in “normal” times and during the distinct challenges of COVID-19. Hear us talk about building a business and momming during a global pandemic. Being adaptable is a personality trait but it is also a skill. Listen in to hear all about ways to flex and improve your adaptability muscle, whether it’s by simply taking a new route to the coffee shop or by trying a new activity every month. There are a million ways to become more adaptable and give yourself the freedom to flow with the Universe. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK This week we want you to get together with your bold partner and practice becoming more adaptable by one of the methods we talked about today. Jump over to our IG or FB group and let us know what steps you are taking to become more adaptable - share pictures of you being adaptable and tag us @goboldlytogether Reminder of a few ways you can practice: Seek out other perspectives and ideas than you normally embrace Start taking small risks every day - try a new brand of coffee, drive a different route to work, try a new makeup routine, wear a different color, try a new kind of food. Start small and build Seek out other people to practice with and encourage them to embrace some kind of change Learn a new skill in your field or in a totally separate field RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? Ep 78. THE POWER OF EXPECTATIONS AND PERSONAL RULES

Join us today as we talk about the power of personal rules and how we tend to suppress them. We’re both sharing some of the life boxes we’ve check off on our linear and nonlinear train. Should, must, ought, and supposed to’s are statements with a common negative thinking pattern, or cognitive distortion, that can contribute to feelings of fear and worry. They also put unreasonable demands and pressure on ourselves, which can make us feel guilty or like we've failed. Today we are giving you examples from our own journey of where this came into play. We also touch on guilt and how this weighs us down. Guilt and shame can often be the result of misplaced “should” and society’s expectations, which we discuss. Stay tuned for another episode where we talk all about the mom guilt. Discarding expectation means listening to your inner voice and silencing the rest. Truly tune in to your soul and do what it wants. Do what just feels right to you at that very moment. This can be done by practicing mindfulness, evaluating the story you are telling yourself, letting go of fixed fantasies and so much more, which we share our own examples of today. Dominating your own thought process can be scary. Risk taking can be scary. Learning how to get off the train can be scary, or not. It’s the ways of improving how we talk to ourselves that can be the real turning point to win! All this, some mantras, and more on today’s show. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Write down the way you thought your life was supposed to be. Write the story of your life. Get together with your Bold partner and exchange the stories. Help each other look at the stories objectively and then identify the bullshit parts of them. The lies in the stories. Rip it up and throw it out. Adopt a mantra when you hear the should, oughts, supposed to’s creep into your life. If it helps (and it will) write it out and post it somewhere. Ep 67: WHY DO WORDS HAVE SO MUCH POWER

E

On today’s episode, we are talking all about words. This is something we have been discussing for a while, but not as loudly as we wanted. So, we now are digging deeper and sharing this important conversation with you today. Tune in today to hear how words can create our reality, rather than reality creating our chosen words. We also share how our language is used and how this has been a life-long process for us. According to an article in Psychology Today, from 2012 researchers have found that you need to replace every negative thought with at least 5 positive thoughts to counteract the effect on the brain. The good news is that our thought patterns are habits, and habits can be changed. We can rewire our brains, and our entire existence by changing the language we use to talk to ourselves and the people around us. We can acknowledge the negative thoughts by saying no thank you and releasing. We can also acknowledge the critical thoughts and use a mantra to help refocus on positive thoughts. Language also impacts culture, both on a micro and macro level which we get into today. How do you speak to your family? How do you interact with your friends? Once we key ourselves in to listening for the repetition of certain words, phrases, or ways of speaking about ourselves and the world it becomes much easier, but it is an active process not passive. MENTIONED IN THE SHOW "A broken bone can heal, but the wound a word opens can fester forever." Jessamyn West "If we understood the power of our thoughts, we would guard them more closely. If we understood the awesome power of our words, we would prefer silence to almost anything negative. In our thoughts and words, we create our own weaknesses and our own strengths. Our limitations and joys begin in our hearts. We can always replace negative with positive." Betty Eadie “By holding a positive and optimistic [word] in your mind, you stimulate frontal lobe activity. This area includes specific language centers that connect directly to the motor cortex responsible for moving you into action. And as our research has shown, the longer you concentrate on positive words, the more you begin to affect other areas of the brain.” Newburg, Waldman GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Start listening to your inner monologue more closely for negative framing and words. Start also listening to how you talk to other people about yourself. Are you repeatedly critical? Are you making yourself smaller? Keep a notebook handy where you can write down the negative and limiting thoughts. Pick one word or phrase from the list that you made and focus in on that specifically. Think about words like can’t, only, just, and always. You may find that you are noticing other people’s negativity now too. Probably not the best time to point it out. Once you have that word use the tools we talked about today, or any of the suggestions in the further reading to work towards removing it from your lexicon. Ep 56: THE PROS AND CONS OF THE TERROR BARRIER. DEALING WITH THE DARKNESS.

E

In today’s episode of We Go Boldly, we are talking about something different. Something we both have gone through and wanted to shed a light, bring awareness, and have a conversation about today. The darkness aka the Terror Barrier is the feeling of fear and anxiety you experience when you’re about to push past your comfort zone in a major way. Tune in to hear our own personal anxieties and how we figure out how we can get passed. The Terror Barrier works as an internal indicator of how much tension you are facing in the moment. When it’s in full effect, you are facing an extremely high amount of tension (for your own current capacity level). For many people, this is too much tension to handle and it shuts them down completely. They slide backward and allow their fears to prevent them from making any progress in their lives. The Terror Barrier is the gatekeeper that separates you from the point-of-no-return of a major decision. Challenges, or “terror barriers” based on our unconscious fears, can often erupt when we are working toward our goals and visions. A terror barrier is an illusion. Every fiber of our being wants us to turn back and throw in the towel, because the subconscious mind is always working to keep us safe and out of potential harm. Here is where we need to hold firm. Our problems are internal, not external. We have somehow labeled our situation as “bad,” and because we hold this energy, we hold resistance Healthy fear vs. unhealthy fear Not all fear is created equal and our responses should not be the same. It is important is to know is the difference between discomfort and distress. Discomfort should feel tolerable. When you are feeling discomfort, what you want to do should still feel exciting and like something you are looking forward to. Distress, on the other hand, feels overwhelming and gets in the way of doing something that you want to do by impairing your ability. Distress tends to feel consuming and overwhelming; you may even feel panicked or like you might die if you take the action. Healthy Reasons to Push Through/Challenge Fear. When the gain outweighs the pain. When we are not willing to give up the thing that we are afraid of. When we want to be free to do the things we want to do -- and don't want to be controlled by fear. When to Listen to Fear and (Possibly) Stop Doing What Makes Us Afraid Proving (yet again) that we can push through fear. Proving an identity. When the risk is not worth the reward. How do we get through the terror barrier? When problems or crises present themselves, understand that all problems are illusions. They come from the context we create around a situation that we decide we do not like. Remember, change is inevitable. The universe is on your side, not against you. Look for the greater seed of benefit. Focus on getting into a state of flow. This is only acquired by being in the present moment. We cannot get there by being in our heads. Reconfirm how you have dealt successfully before with terror barriers. Set specific goals, rather than rely on a generic dream. Take the first step toward your first goal. Recognize the terror barrier and see it as a growth opportunity. Take satisfaction in widening your comfort zone, the opportunity to learn, and the progress toward your goals. Start and end the day with gratitude. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Think about the last time you were scared or sensed the darkness. How did you get through it? How did you identify if it was healthy or unhealthy? Do you have any big goals right now that you know fear is holding you back? What are they? If you have big goals and you know fear is getting in the way, what can you do to help work through it? RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? Ep 45: HOW DOES SHE HAVE TIME? COMPARISON SHAME.

E

Join us in today’s honest conversation all about comparison. We’re sharing our own personal stories of how we‘ve gotten caught in the comparison game, as well as some major key takeaways. We’re also talking about shame versus guilt. Where guilt is useful to the extent that it helps enforce social norms and mores, shame is the deeply painful feelings of unworthiness and unacceptability, the lack of belonging. We also talk about how temporal self-comparison can be useful to understand your own path, and how you can make changes. Here we share more about our recent photoshoot for our website and the different mindsets we had going into it. Comparing yourself to others breeds resentment, disappointment, shame, and self-doubt, therefore it is so important to get out of your own head and start listening to that inner voice of yours. When you look at the lives that other people are living, you are only seeing the surface and what they allow you to see. People are not honest about the entirety of their lives online, or in real life. If you are comparing yourself to what you see in others, then you are really comparing yourself to the ideal that has been presented, not the reality of their everyday life. Life is not fair or equal. Comparison to others fails to account for this factor. Today we’re celebrating those little moments of cleaning the bathroom, fixing the sink, and making the bed! We’re finding joy in our small successes each and every day and want you to start doing the same! All this and more on today’s comparison episode. QUOTE WE LOVE Propel Women, Christine Caine: “When we believe the lies of comparison, that’s where shame steps in—the fear of being unworthy. Shame makes us feel small, unwanted, and unloved. And together, comparison and shame will keep us from living the full, happy lives we’re destined to live.” GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Before the next episode take this step… Check in with your boldness partner. How are you both doing? Take time to listen to each other, connect, laugh, cry, whatever it is you need to do. Together, set a timer for 10 minutes, and write down everything that you spend time comparing about yourself. Be honest. Is it your weight, money, job, dreams, children, spouses, degrees...whatever it is...the whiteness of your teeth? Write it down in one big crazy list. Here are your next options. Burn the list and do it again when you’re ready. Read the list to your accountability partner and dig into it. RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? Ep 34: BUSTING THE MYTHS OF MOTIVATION AND DISCIPLINE

E

In today’s episode we are talking about the myths of motivation and discipline. Motivation, discipline, and habit are three things we all know we need, but struggle with, and often get confused with each other. Discipline is the stage just before habit. It takes discipline to develop a habit. It’s when we are forcing ourselves to do something, we don’t want to do, it doesn’t feel natural. It requires a thought process. Motivation is overhyped. Motivation is kind of your why. People expect motivation will work as a magical elixir that will jump start your future. The reality is that motivation comes and goes. It fluctuates depending on the circumstance. We both have good days and bad which we share with you today. What worked before will not always work. You can’t rely on natural motivation or discipline, so you need to create your own. If you google motivation vs discipline, you will see arguments that you need one over the other. You need to figure out what works for you. Tune in today to hear how we motivate ourselves, our children and family. The steps we take as well as what keeps us all happy and motivated at the same time. Who we choose to surround ourselves with and the personal development work we do to help us achieve our end result? All this and more on today’s show. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Before the next episode take this step… Identify one thing you want to do or habit you want to set. Figure out what your motivation is. Both intrinsic and extrinsic. Start. Ep 23: GOAL SETTING WILL LEAD TO A HAPPIER LIFE

E

In today’s episode we are going to be talking about why goal setting is essential to living a more meaningful and happier life as well as all the distractions and disappointment that come along with this territory. When you set a big goal, break it down into mini goals that are achievable and measurable, make sure that you set specific times to check in on progress and adjust as needed. Frame your goal as a positive rather than a negative. Not to ignore the feeling but to frame the intended outcome. We’re getting into examples such as this. I want to be my own boss and run a business vs I hate my boss and want to quit my job. I want to feed my body healthy food more often vs. I want to stop eating so much junk food. We want you to speak your goals out loud; to a friend, family, the universe, your religious leader etc… Tune in as we share some of our own personal and professional goals as well as the steps, we each take to achieve them. We’re also sharing our best tips and tricks when it comes to the planning and projecting and talking about giving yourself some grace in the meantime. From obstacles to opportunity and resilience to celebrations, we’re diving right into this topic with you today. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Before the next episode take this step… Set 1-3 goals, make sure that they are something you can measure, put a time limit on, and attain. You want to ensure that you can reach some of your goals before we get to our next conversation, that builds excitement and motivation for the next round of goals.
