EP 387: Naked Life Story - Lisa

Lisa’s 30-year drinking career began when she was around 17 years old. She was working in an office and going down to the local bar at lunchtime was part of the Australian culture, something she had to do to fit in. A people pleaser, Lisa always chose jobs that fed her need to make others happy. And, she used alcohol to cope with anything life threw at her. Despite nearly dying at one point and thinking she had learned her lesson and could moderate, Lisa continued drinking to excess. Her marriage and work suffered. Her mental and physical health suffered. In this episode, Lisa shares how she found freedom from alcohol and how joining The PATH by This Naked Mind was like coming home. So, if you asked me about the one thing that makes This Naked Mind so different from anything else I would have to say emotion. Is the emotion people feel when they're really ready to make a change, when they've had that mindset shift, when they've gone through all the materials and the methodology, and they get this feeling that they're never going to get to drink again, they let that go and they think, "Oh my gosh, I never have to drink again." That change in emotion. And honestly, according to all sorts of new research, it is emotion, especially positive emotion more than anything else that predicates how long a change in our behavior will stick, how long it will last. It's emotion. And so when you feel excited about a change in your life, when you're thrilled, you're making this new different change instead of feeling deprived or like you've been missing out, everything changes. And that's really what makes This Naked Mind stick for the long-term. That's what makes it so different is we focus on how you feel and truly change your emotion around drinking. And if that sounds interesting to you, I want you to check out our self guided PATH at nakedmindpath.com. Enrollment in this program is closing on June 11th. So you don't want to miss it. It's closing now. And this is the path to changing your emotion and changing your feelings so that you can really truly find freedom in your relationship with alcohol. EP 383: Naked Life Story - Jim

On today’s episode, Annie Grace talks with This Naked Mind Coach Jim. Introduced to beer when he was about 10 years old, Jim remembers getting to have a few sips on holidays and special occasions. He used fake IDs in the late 60s and early 70s when driver's licenses were paper and changing your birth date was simple. Always a beer drinker, Jim started making wine and using it to quiet anxiety and help him sleep following his divorce. A pharmacist for more than 40 years, Jim recalls patients handing him back their medication when he told them they couldn’t drink alcohol while taking it. Now “faster and funnier” without alcohol, today Jim helps others find freedom from alcohol or, as he puts it, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Hi. Super exciting news. So The Alcohol Experiment book is being released. Actually it got released just a few days ago with the expanded edition. What does expanded edition mean? It means that every single day throughout the book there are deep reflective journal entries that have been added with space to write which is so cool and so exciting. So you really make it your own. And, the reason I did this is because I truly believe that the deepest wisdom you will access throughout the 30 days of The Alcohol Experiment comes from within you. You know more about what’s best for you than anybody else in the entire world. And I know sometimes that can be hard to believe but when you really access your own wisdom it is so profound. So you can pick up your own copy at alcoholexperimentbook.com and check it out. It’s really powerful. EP 382: Coaching Questions with Scott Pinyard

On this month’s coaching episode, This Naked Mind Head Coach Scott Pinyard welcomes This Naked Mind Senior Coach Pam McRae as his guest host. After a brief discussion about Pam’s work specializing in helping people through grief and loss while staying alcohol free, they answer three great questions: If I am not an alcoholic, what am I? How can I explain my situation to people? How do you manage a partner who doesn't want to cut back on their alcohol consumption? With COVID I feel like I’ve lost my life; I am alcohol free but really starting to struggle - do you have any tips for how to deal with where I am right now? And, finally, Scott tosses his signature curveball question to Pam. Let me ask you a question. What is better than change? Lasting change, of course. If you've had trouble making change stick, either with alcohol or in any other area of your life, you are in for a treat. I created the 100 Days of Lasting Change to ensure that we don't just change for a moment, but we truly transform for a lifetime. This program is so close to my heart. EP 381: Naked Life Story - Lauren

As a child in a family where alcoholism ran rampant, Lauren used to pour bottles of wine down the drain and break packs of cigarettes. There was emotional neglect in her home and by fourth grade she was experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. Lauren felt the pain, loneliness, and pressure to be perfect, all while keeping her family’s secret. Alcohol had been a turn off for Lauren, but in college she slowly fell into binge drinking. Despite her high GPA and marathon training, Lauren’s drinking was the talk of the next day and her behavior was the butt of drinking jokes. After college, her drinking escalated - Lauren romanticized drinking and being lost and not having it all together as an escape from the perfection she felt expected to portray. The double life felt gross, but she couldn’t get her drinking under control. Lauren had 35 day ones. Listen to hear what finally changed, how she stopped drinking, and what life looks like now. EP 379: Naked Life Story - Caitlin

Caitlin was a Type A kid who got good grades, played sports, fit the mold, and checked all the boxes. She had her first drink on her 21st birthday with her parents and hated the taste of champagne. Fast forward to veterinary school which required a big move away from her partner and family, just three days after Caitlin’s mom passed away. Alcohol became a source of comfort and escape - from stress, reality, herself. Then, she discovered This Naked Mind - she did a Live Alcohol Experiment and then joined The PATH. EP 377: Naked Life Story - Brandi

Growing up, Brandi received mixed messages about alcohol. On one hand, she was told how evil it is and to stay away from it. On the other, she saw alcohol present at every holiday, celebration, and nice dinner. The battle of messages played out for years and Brandi avoided alcohol until she turned 21. Her birthday drinks awoke a sleeping dragon - Brandi learned quickly that alcohol did for her what food had done for many years, but in a socially acceptable and better way. Over the years, she found herself doing Whole 30 over and over again, more to remove alcohol than eat healthier. After her father died, she used alcohol to manage her grief until she realized it wasn’t helping. Realizing how much she was giving to alcohol, Brandi signed up for one of the very first This Naked Mind Live Alcohol Experiments. She hasn’t looked back since and is now a certified This Naked Mind senior coach. I'm so excited you guys, because we are just about to start another LIVE Alcohol Experiment. EP 375: Naked Life Story - Arlan Hamilton

As a kid around drinking adults, Arlan was always worried about who would be able to help if there was an emergency. In her twenties, she spent a lot of time in the lesbian party scenes in San Diego and Los Angeles, never drinking unless someone else was buying. No matter how much she drank, Arlan was always the responsible one at the end of the night, putting people in cabs and not letting friends go home with the wrong person. But, drinking stopped being fun and Arlan started referring to alcohol as her “medicine.” She chose it over food when there wasn’t enough money for both. Getting ready to check into rehab, she looked for a book that might “logic her into” a life without alcohol and found This Naked Mind, which she credits with saving her life. Today, Arlan manages the venture capital fund she built from the ground up. Through the fund, she is dedicated to minimizing funding disparities in tech by investing in high-potential founders who are people of color, women, and/or LGBT. Hey, it’s Annie Grace. Today, a reader writes in to say they have been alcohol free for six months and are feeling tempted to have a drink - although they cannot deny how amazing they feel as a result of sleeping better and a clear mind and love how they look and feel, they don’t want to give up alcohol forever. EP 367: Naked Life Story - Lisa

Growing up in New Zealand, Lisa was one of five children. She remembers being aware her mother had a problem with alcohol but didn’t notice alcohol in their daily lives. At university, nicotine became Lisa’s go-to stress reliever. Alcohol crept in later, very slowly for a long time, and then ramped up after Lisa’s second child was stillborn and she blamed herself for the death. Drinking felt like sanity to Lisa - it made life feel better and she couldn’t imagine why she would ever stop. A fall while walking her dog landed Lisa in the doctor's office where she expressed her concern about her alcohol consumption to someone for the first time. Listen as Lisa shares her story with Annie - how she went from feeling alone and broken in her own private Hell to watching her life come back into focus, and becoming a Certified This Naked Mind Coach. EP 365: Naked Life Story - Barbara T.

Born and raised in Switzerland, Barbara is a married mom of an adult daughter. Her first exposure to alcohol was when she was 17 years old, working in Italy as an au pair. She didn’t like how tired it made her. She got into climbing and loved the natural high - drinking beer and wine after climbs was part of the culture but wasn’t something Barbara enjoyed. After marriage and childbirth, though, she fell into a pattern of using alcohol to relax at the end of the day. When menopause hit, Barbara began to wonder what alcohol was really doing to her physically and emotionally. Her curiosity led her to read This Naked Mind - what she learned gave her freedom from alcohol. Trained as a midwife in Switzerland where she was hospital-based, and now working as a doula (referring to herself as the Amygdala Whisperer) in the United States, Barbara was amazed to find so many neuroscientific similarities between giving birth and quitting drinking. Hey, it’s Annie Grace. I want to tell you about the most important book that I never wrote. I mean that. This is This Naked Life. It is 48 true stories of people finding freedom from alcohol. EP 364: Reader Question - Do I have to choose between being alcohol free or my relationship?

A reader writes: “How can I remain alcohol-free when my spouse tries to sabotage my efforts? He buys me drinks when we eat out and buys my favorite liquor and has it waiting for me when I get home. I haven't had a drink yet, but I feel like I have to choose between my health or my relationship.” Is it intentional sabotage or there something else underneath this behavior? How can you better understand why a spouse might encourage you to drink and communicate your expectations of them? Annie Grace shares her thoughts about how couples can navigate what feels like a battle when one partner stops drinking and the other doesn’t. A reader asks, “After about five days of being alcohol-free, my spirits are lifted and I feel more alive and more happy … I want to have a fun night celebrating with my new state of mind, which is that I don't feel controlled by alcohol. Afterwards, I return to daily drinking, usually for two weeks or so, until I'm back to feeling lifeless, purposeless, sad, and tired. It's a common pattern. When Evan began drinking in high school at age 16, he thought alcohol was the greatest thing on Earth. He found it easy to balance everything in his world - social life, academics, a part-time job, sports. In college partying became more important, and he barely graduated. As he began his career, Evan worked hard and played hard, committed to never changing his drinking. Then stuff started happening. A drunken fall left his ankle permanently damaged. He began wetting the bed. He drove under the influence. He drank to excess with his dad who then ended up hospitalized with chest pains. By this time, Evan was a husband and a father. He caught up with a college friend at a party - the friend had stopped drinking and credited This Naked Mind with his success. A few months later, Evan decided to address the monster in his life. EP 347: Naked Life Story - Evelyne

There wasn’t much alcohol around when Evelyne was growing up, just some wine on special occasions. She began drinking in college, eventually becoming someone who could always drink more than her friends and always wanted more to drink. But, since she didn’t feel dependent on alcohol, did well at work, and had never gotten a DUI, Evelyne never questioned her drinking. It wasn’t until she was taking a Monday night wine class - something that kicked off her drinking each week - that she stumbled upon This Naked Mind. Today, living alcohol free allows Evelyne to be more authentic in her work in the integrative functional medicine field. If you asked me about the one thing that makes This Naked Mind so different from anything else, I would have to say emotion. It is the emotion when people feel really ready to make a change, when they’ve had that mindset shift, when they’ve gone through all the materials and the methodology and they get this feeling that it’s not that they never get to drink again it's that they never have to drink again. And, interestingly, according to all sorts of new research, it is emotion, especially positive emotion, more than anything else that predicates how long a change will stick, how long it will last. It is emotion. When you feel excited about a change in your life. When you feel thrilled you’re making this new difference, instead of feeling deprived like you’re missing out, everything changes. And it really makes it that This Naked Mind can stick for the long term. If you want to know more about how to truly change your emotion around drinking, I want you to join me at nakedmindpath.com. EP 339: Naked Life Story - Meade

On today’s episode, Annie Grace talks with Meade, a Certified Naked Mind Coach who once used alcohol as a crutch for the tough seasons of life. Growing up believing people either drank or they went to AA or rehab, Meade always thought her drinking looked like everyone else’s. She thrived on people pleasing and found herself sleepwalking through her own life just to meet the needs of others. Stuck between the decision to continue drinking miserably or become miserable trying not to drink, Meade found This Naked Mind and stopped allowing alcohol to block her from living a life she loves. EP 338: Reader Question - Is it safe to stop drinking if I have been drinking every day?

What do you do if you have been drinking every day and want to stop? Is it safe to take away something your body is used to having all the time? Who should consult with a doctor before quitting? In today’s episode, Annie Grace talks about how people who stop their daily drinking routine can experience physical effects from nothing at all to a few withdrawal symptoms to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Thousands of people have been through it, and their results are incredible. But don't take my word for it, check it out at thisnakedmind.com/100days. EP 337: Naked Life Story - Leigh

Leigh’s first experience with alcohol was in college where she became a binge drinker. She drank less as she transitioned to a career but after getting married and having kids, Leigh noticed her glass of wine at the end of the day turned into a bottle every night. After the death of her father, she found herself day drinking. At the same time, Leigh was also able to go for long periods of time without having any alcohol. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, with no rules for anything and the increased normalcy of drinking to deal with everything. After losing her grandfather to COVID in May 2020, Leigh finally found freedom from alcohol with This Naked Mind. Are you ready for a deep dive into truly lasting change? If so, you might consider my Intensive Program. It’s a 9-week, self-led program that you can do in the complete comfort of your own home. It will truly transform your relationship with alcohol.
