EP 319: Naked Life Story - Emily
Emily never had a problem giving up alcohol during her pregnancies. However, each time she started drinking again, she noticed she drank more than she used to. She made rules for herself and broke them. Again and again. Then she began having health issues and was arrested for driving drunk. Having to explain the breathalyzer in the car to her five children and answer their questions about her drinking was a turning point for Emily and she began her journey in AA. Today, Emily is a This Naked Mind coach and loves helping others find freedom from alcohol. Hi. Super exciting news. So The Alcohol Experiment book is being released. Actually it got released just a few days ago with the expanded edition. What does expanded edition mean? It means that every single day throughout the book there are deep reflective journal entries that have been added with space to write which is so cool and so exciting. So you really make it your own. And, the reason I did this is because I truly believe that the deepest wisdom you will access throughout the 30 days of The Alcohol Experiment comes from within you. You know more about what’s best for you than anybody else in the entire world. And I know sometimes that can be hard to believe but when you really access your own wisdom it is so profound. Any thoughts? 3) What are your opinions on alcohol-free wines and beers? 4) I feel like I'm obsessing about not drinking; I find myself reminding myself about all the negatives about drinking so that I don't drink, as well as the positives. EP 316: Reader Question - How can I raise kids in our alcohol soaked society?
Today’s question from a mom is near and dear to Annie Grace’s heart. Even if we raise our kids differently than our parents raised us, teaching them lessons about alcohol we wish our parents had taught us, how do we navigate the inevitable years where they will rebel and experiment with alcohol and make mistakes. As a mom of three herself, Annie often thinks about what her kids’ experiences with alcohol will be like. Listen as she shares her thoughts. I'm so excited you guys, because we are just about to start another live alcohol experiment. EP 315: Naked Life Story - Kelly
As a kid, Kelly watched her mom struggle with alcohol. There was physical and emotional abuse. Although her own relationship with alcohol started out “just like everyone else’s” and she was well aware of what alcohol could do to a person, Kelly found herself drinking to manage emotional waves and blackout. Though Kelly never missed work or got a DUI, red flags popped up as she tried to moderate and set rules around her drinking. Today, she has taken back her power, made alcohol small, and broken an intergenerational cycle of alcohol abuse. I'm so excited you guys, because we are just about to start another live alcohol experiment. If you do not know about the alcohol experiment, you need to literally drop everything right now and go to thisnakedmind.com/lae. That's L-A-E for Live Alcohol Experiment. EP 314: Reader Question - How do I stay sober in trying times?
On today’s episode, a reader who has been alcohol free for three weeks is struggling to cope with a stressful situation and wondering how to avoid relaxing with a glass of wine. What really happens when you use alcohol to relax? Do you feel better? How long does that feeling last? What are some other ways to manage your emotions in super difficult times? Annie Grace explains. Let me ask you a question. What is better than change? Lasting change, of course. If you've had trouble making change stick, either with alcohol or in any other area of your life, you are in for a treat. I created the 100 Days of Lasting Change to ensure that we don't just change for a moment, but we truly transform for a lifetime. This program is so close to my heart. EP 313: Naked Life Story - Amy M.
Amy didn’t pick up alcohol until college. After graduation, she put it down again. People often found it curious that she didn’t drink. However, when she became a parent to special needs children, everything changed. Though well-intentioned, the moms with whom Amy connected supported one another by encouraging drinking and she began using alcohol to cope with life’s stresses. The logic that drinking wouldn’t change anything never worked on Amy; the fact things were never going to change was the very reason she drank. Though alcohol became very sneaky and difficult to break up with, Amy found the freedom she deeply wanted, even amidst a pandemic. Are you ready for a deep dive into truly lasting change? If so, you might consider my Intensive Program. It’s a 9-week, self-led program that you can do in the complete comfort of your own home. It will truly transform your relationship with alcohol. If you want to learn more about this, go to thisnakedmind.com/intensive. And, as always - rate, review, and subscribe to this podcast, as it truly helps the message reach somebody who might need to hear it today.

EP 312: Reader Question - How can I convince others not to drink?
Annie Grace answers a phenomenal question today. A reader asks, “Now that I know the truth about alcohol, how do I not force it on others who are doing the same thing I was?” When you have removed alcohol from your life and learned so much from your experience and you’re watching people you love continue doing something that’s harmful to them, how do you reconcile those things? What can you do to get people to take your advice? If you asked me about the one thing that makes This Naked Mind so different from anything else, I would have to say emotion. It is the emotion when people feel really ready to make a change, when they’ve had that mindset shift, when they’ve gone through all the materials and the methodology and they get this feeling that it’s not that they never get to drink again it's that they never have to drink again. And, interestingly, according to all sorts of new research, it is emotion, especially positive emotion, more than anything else that predicates how long a change will stick, how long it will last. It is emotion. When you feel excited about a change in your life. When you feel thrilled you’re making this new difference, instead of feeling deprived like you’re missing out, everything changes. And it really makes it that This Naked Mind can stick for the long term. If you want to know more about how to truly change your emotion around drinking, I want you to join me at nakedmindpath.com. It is the path to changing your emotion and changing your feelings and really finding freedom in your relationship with alcohol. The results didn’t tell her anything new - she was already aware of her core values. However, what she realized is that when she had alcohol in her system, she was not living with integrity. From anxiety to marriage to divorce to marriage to motherhood (times four) to a cancer diagnosis and treatment to finding freedom from alcohol, This Naked Mind coach Victoria shares her story and how she's brought her behavior and beliefs into alignment. EP 305: Naked Life Story - Wendy
The first time Wendy got drunk, she was 15 years old. She vomited on a police officer and her parents. In college and law school her drinking looked like everyone else’s - partying once or twice a week, bingeing from time to time. Casual drinking didn’t begin until she started practicing law. And, when she and her husband had trouble conceiving, drinking shifted from being an enjoyable social pleasure to a coping mechanism, using wine to relax, unwind, and escape. Wendy talks about how she was able to stop drinking once she stopped trying harder and tried something different. Did you miss This Naked Mind Live? Do you maybe have a little bit of FOMO? After graduation, her heavy weekend alcohol use continued, ultimately becoming much worse following the unexpected death of her father. EP 302: Reader Question - Why do you tell people to keep drinking?
The first step in changing your relationship with alcohol is to stop trying to stop drinking. Wait. What? It’s counterintuitive. It’s controversial. It’s what makes This Naked Mind - the book, the methodology, everything - so different from anything else. There’s a very good reason we do things this way. So, take a breath, let yourself off the hook, and listen as Annie Grace busts the myths and clarifies what exactly she means when she says, “Stop trying to stop drinking.” If you asked me about the one thing that makes This Naked Mind so different from anything else, I would have to say emotion. EP 300: Reader Question - Why am I triggered to drink when I’m feeling good?
“Dear Annie: Today I was feeling pretty good about myself and what I was accomplishing and suddenly I had a craving. Normally I crave when I'm trying to avoid or numb a negative emotion, so I was confused. Acknowledging how good I was feeling, and my own goodness and beauty, makes me uncomfortable and I wanted to numb out those good feelings. When I realized it's easier to believe the negative things about myself than it is to believe the positive things about myself, I got really sad.” In today’s episode, Annie Grace shares her thoughts about how to deal with these cravings and explains why she always says, “Celebrate the awareness, no matter how painful it is.” Hey, it’s Annie Grace. Now I am drinking more on a daily basis. Is that bad? 3) During the first year of sober experiences, what are the best tools for those classic drinking events like weddings, vacations, and concerts where everyone else is drinking? 4) I feel like I have a split personality - I am excited about being alcohol free but I also have major FOMO when I think about not drinking in certain situations. EP 297: Naked Life Story - Rob
From a very young age, Rob assumed drinking would be a normal part of his life forever. He drank socially and on special occasions, and from time to time he drank way too much. But, he never felt alcohol was a problem. Then, about eight years ago, he let down his guard. The idea of drinking more was presented to him and, combined with his feelings of disappointment and some pain and fear that had shown up, Rob began drinking to cover up and numb the stuff that didn’t feel good. After lots of searching for the right path to a different relationship with alcohol, he found This Naked Mind. A participant in the very first Live Alcohol Experiment, Rob went from having a constant and desperate desire to drink to having no interest in alcohol whatsoever. And, as a This Naked Mind coach, he now helps others make the same shift he did. EP 293: Naked Life Story - Julia
A self-described “messy drinker” from the start, Julia grew up in the middle of nowhere on the England/Scotland border and had her first taste of alcohol around 14 years old. While she often worried about alcoholism and whether or not she was drinking too much, she easily calmed her fears and assured herself she was alright when she watched those around her drinking the same way she did. By the time she turned 40, Julia was living in a big loop of drinking, hangovers, and generally getting in her own way all the time. Since quitting drinking, she has gone from being convinced living without alcohol was going to be a boring, grey half-life without any friends or fun to writing a book about her journey and feeling safe and secure with the absence of alcohol as a rock underneath her. What can we say when we just want our drinking to be a non-issue? How do we turn down alcohol without making it a big deal for everyone around us? Can we use our tone of voice and facial expressions and body language to adjust the message we want to deliver? A self-described “closet nondrinker,” Carolyn is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in working with people-pleasing perfectionists who struggle with anxiety. She uses brainspotting, a technique that leverages the close connection between our brains and our vision to bring relief from symptoms of anxiety, shame, overwhelm, trauma, and many other ways we, as humans, can feel emotionally and physically stuck. On today’s episode, Carolyn opens up about how she tried to keep her decision not to drink off the radar screens of the people she drank to fit in with, and how This Naked Mind and brainspotting have helped her create lasting change. EP 286: Reader Question - Are you sober?
“Annie, are you sober,” asked a journalist. It was the first time Annie had been asked the question. The assumption is that Annie Grace is sober. Right? But, what does sober really mean? And, does Annie consider herself sober? Let me ask you a question. What is better than change? Lasting change, of course. If you've had trouble making change stick, either with alcohol or in any other area of your life, you are in for a treat. I created the 100 Days of Lasting Change to ensure that we don't just change for a moment, but we truly transform for a lifetime. This program is so close to my heart. Thousands of people have been through it, and their results are incredible. But don't take my word for it, check it out at thisnakedmind.com/100days. EP 285: Naked Life Story - Melissa
Growing up in Australia, Melissa had no idea how powerful alcohol was. Drinking first popped onto her radar screen around age 17 and she began partying the same way all her friends did - blacking out, getting sick, being hungover. It was what they did and no one questioned their behavior. Melissa loved the fun and always found people who wanted to drink. At 35, she decided to try moderating her drinking. A few years later she realized she was an “I’ve had too much, give me another” drinker who never intentionally refused a drink. It was time to change. Are you looking to connect with like-minded people? Sometimes maybe you feel like you have all this information from doing This Naked Mind or The Alcohol Experiment, but you’re living in a world where people don’t speak your language. That is why I created The Exchange. The Exchange from This Naked Mind is an online community where we meet face to face, live with video calls multiple times a week with people from all over the world just to connect and have somewhere that you are seen, you are heard, and you feel less alone. A place where you can really give back and get the support you need. If this sounds great to you, check it out at thisnakedmind.com/exchange. EP 284: Reader Question - How can I support a spouse who's trying to live alcohol free?
What can a wife to do support her husband who set a goal to stop drinking for a year, gave up alcohol for two months, and then she came home to find him drinking? Should she get angry? Give him tough love? Encourage him to keep trying? Leave him alone to wallow in his judgment and self-doubt? Annie shares her thoughts on what exactly constitutes success and how we can take what we interpret as failure and use it to our advantage. Right now, for the first time ever, I am doing something that I think you will find incredibly valuable and amazing. Here's the thing, I've been asking myself, why do some people effortlessly stop drinking while other people struggle? Why do some people who haven't drank in years still miss it, still feel like they're missing out, still even feel a little self-pity? Why can't I do that anymore? What's going on? What's the difference? The thing is these questions have kept me up at night and I have spent years now diving into the science, diving into literally hundreds of interviews and thousands and thousands of surveys of feedback from people trying to understand why. What makes it different? I think I finally really understand it. And I've put all of this together into something that I believe is one of the best things I've ever created. It is a modular membership program that is coach-led so that people can find freedom faster. I read recently that the average time from when somebody recognizes a problem with alcohol to when they solve it can be up to 15 years. I know that I get thousands of emails with people saying, "Man, I'm so happy I found your work. My only regret is that I didn't find it sooner." So I wanted to put everything I've known so far, all of the research, all of the interviews, all of your experiences, all of the stories into this coach-led program that is truly customizable for you. So if you need it for a month and you find your freedom, great. But if you need to be with us for longer, that's also fine. Right now, for a limited time, this program is at a massive discount just because I recognize what's going on with the world. So if you are at all curious about this and you want to know more and you're ready to really make alcohol small and irrelevant in your life, once and for good to not only where you're not drinking, not stopping just at the behavior of drinking, but actually where it feels effortless not to drink. Where it feels easy, where you never feel like you're missing out, where you always actually feel like you're more joyful and happier. I know that's hard to believe, and it was for me too, but it's okay if you're skeptical. It works anyway. If you're curious about this at all, check it out, nakedmindpath.com. It's open right now. It's closing May 31st. So if you want to get in on this first-ever launch of this coach-led program, that is totally modular, that you can come and take as much time or as little time as you need to truly make alcohol small and irrelevant in your life, join me. nakedmindpath.com. I can't wait to see you there. And as always, rate, review, and subscribe to this podcast as it truly helps the message reach somebody who might need to hear it today.

EP 283: Coaching Questions with Scott Pinyard
On today’s episode, This Naked Mind head coach Scott Pinyard dives into four terrific questions, some specific to not drinking during the COVID-19 pandemic - they are: The longer we stay home, the more intense my cravings become; what can I do to stray strong? I think I’m ready to quit drinking but with the pandemic am I just setting myself up to fail? I was 30 days alcohol free when we started quarantining and I caved when I got anxious; how can I turn my anger into motivation? I did the Live Alcohol Experiment but as soon as it ended I felt to pull to drink; how can I stay motivated beyond the 30 days? Right now, for the first time ever, I am doing something that I think you will find incredibly valuable and amazing. Here's the thing, I've been asking myself, why do some people effortlessly stop drinking while other people struggle? EP 282: Reader Question - Are you really having more fun in life without drinking alcohol?
We hear it all the time. It must suck not to drink. Life must be so boring. But, did you know there is definitive evidence that removing alcohol does not strip away our ability to have fun? Did you know that it’s actually alcohol that steals the brain’s ability to have fun? Annie Grace explains. Are you ready for a deep dive into truly lasting change? If so, you might consider my Intensive Program. It’s a 9-week, self-led program that you can do in the complete comfort of your own home. It will truly transform your relationship with alcohol. EP 281: Naked Life Story - Andrew S.
Andrew had his first sip of sherry at the age of three. He loved it. It wasn’t until he was nearing his forties in a job with a strong drinking culture where booze equaled camaraderie and a way to let off steam and ignore problems that Andrew began to question his drinking. He was a “happy drunk” but also found alcohol turning him into a person he didn’t like. Yet, he continued justifying his drinking by telling himself it could be worse. Now alcohol free, Andrew reminds himself he can drink if he wants to but chooses not to. He’s happy to be clear-headed and off the yo-yo alcohol diet. EP 280: Reader Question - Why Isn’t Everyone Addicted?
If alcohol is addictive, why doesn’t everyone become addicted to it? Who are these magical beings who can drink without becoming addicted? Or not drink at all? Is it genetic? Does it have something to do with their personality? Are some people just broken and others are not? And, what is the one thing we can point to when a relationship with alcohol pivots from being mostly in control to very much out of control? Are you looking to connect with like-minded people? Sometimes maybe you feel like you have all this information from doing This Naked Mind or The Alcohol Experiment, but you’re living in a world where people don’t speak your language. On today’s episode, coach, podcast host, and self-described life-long seeker Omar Pinto joins Annie Grace from Costa Rica. From his first drink at 16 years old, Omar felt magic in the way alcohol quieted the noise in his head and made the negative self-talk disappear. In constant search of control and freedom, Omar sought approval and validation and to feel significant. He thought alcohol gave him all that. Listen to hear how he found hope by learning to believe in himself and reframing his story into a much more empowering version of the truth. Have you tried The Alcohol Experiment? EP 278: Reader Question - How can friends and family support someone who is changing their relationship with alcohol?
Can you easily refuse a drink or limit your alcohol consumption? Are you having a hard time understanding the way someone in your life is dealing with (or not dealing with) their drinking? If you are a partner, spouse, parent, child, sibling, or friend of someone who is changing their relationship with alcohol, today’s episode is for you. EP 277: Naked Life Story - Meagan
After being introduced to alcohol by a babysitter before she was even a teenager, Meagan drank for more than 20 years. In college, she took pride in her ability to go out and drink all night while continuing to earn straight As, maintain scholarships, star in a play, and serve as a spokesperson for the Rain Forest Association. Meagan’s career took her from London to Paris and kept alcohol so big she once drank to prove to a boss that she wasn’t pregnant. Her mother introduced her to This Naked Mind, and Meagan finally got curious enough to make alcohol small. Are you ready for a deep dive into truly lasting change? If so, you might consider my Intensive Program. It’s a 9-week, self-led program that you can do in the complete comfort of your own home. It will truly transform your relationship with alcohol. EP 276: Reader Question - Why do I crave a drink when I'm calm and relaxed?
Why, when we feel calm and relaxed and comfortable and completely at ease, do we desire alcohol? We know we’re not stressed or anxious or upset, yet somehow we still want a drink. It doesn’t make sense. How do the cravings show up when we already have the feeling we will get from drinking? And, what can we do to make it stop? Annie Grace explains. Let me ask you a question. What is better than change? Lasting change, of course. If you've had trouble making change stick, either with alcohol or in any other area of your life, you are in for a treat. I created the 100 Days of Lasting Change to ensure that we don't just change for a moment, but we truly transform for a lifetime. This program is so close to my heart. EP 275: Naked Life Story - Amy
Growing up, Amy wasn’t sure where she belonged. She questioned her sexuality but also wanted to be faithful to God, to do and be all the things she “should” do and be. Amy felt she was different but chose to look the other way, finding comfort in the sense of belonging alcohol gave her. Alcohol helped her feel normal and socialize. But there was always that feeling something wasn’t right. She was losing herself, trying to “pray the gay away” and drinking more and more. It wasn’t until Amy began paying attention to her thoughts and beliefs about alcohol that she was able to begin the journey of finding herself, of moving past all the “shoulds” and loving herself for who she is. Are you looking to connect with like-minded people? On today’s episode, Annie Grace answers a question from Francesca whose biggest obstacle is her memory of how alcohol tastes. How do I avoid losing my connection with my friends when after our hikes they’re drinking and I’m not? EP 271: Naked Life Story - Marc
Marc spent decades in a career where he was told drinking was part of the process, that it was necessary for success. But when his alcohol consumption shifted from something reserved for sales events or weekends or vacations to a daily 4:00 p.m. craving to numb unhappiness and work stress, Marc began to experience poor sleep and painful hangovers. He was tired of beating himself up for letting himself down and not having enough willpower to moderate his drinking. The father of three knew it was time to change. Marc found This Naked Mind and took back control of his health and his desire to be a good role model for his kids.
