Ep 216Tom Webster: Edison Research

Tom Webster is a Senior VP at Edison Research. There are a few spots on our company calendar we circle in anticipation of Tom. It's either a data release for Edison's Share of Ear, an Infinite Dial Study, or an address at Podcast Movement. This month we would have heard Tom at PM20 but with 2020 being as it is, this episode will have to serve as our fix.In this episode you will hear about some of the differences between Canadian and U.S. radio listening habits, our discussion around Pandora being unavailable in Canada, and the effects the CBC is having on our listening. We also get into podcasting's growth and what's ahead for an industry closing in on $1 Billion in ad revenue. We also revisited two of Tom's talks from Podcast Movement and discussed if your podcast needs to be in places beyond the RSS feed and if enough mainstream content is being created to satisfy America's podcast appetite. Finally Tom offers lots of advice for the independent podcaster who might be feeling the squeeze from large podcasting creators occupying most of the discovery space. We mentioned that Tom has a newsletter worth signing up for called I Hear Things. There's also more about this episode on our website, including links to the shows Tom made mention of in the podcast. Please support our sponsors including:PromosuiteThe NLogic Services DivisionMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 215Pete Marier: Being Bad Pete

E

How did Pete Marier become Bad Pete? He tells us. I spent my teenage years listening to Pete Marier on my clock radio when he was at 980 CKGM and 95.9 CJFM. The next decade Pete was a co-worker and we've been friends since. We are not strangers to Winnipeg and Montreal radio, nor the task of raising three boys, So we always have lots of talk about. A lot of people don’t immediately associate Pete with being Bob-FM's first morning host when the format was launched back in 2002 in Winnipeg. He tells the story of how it he found himself in the middle of that and a whole lot of other radio fuckery that goes on.In this episode, Pete and I settle in for a long talk about life, family life and radio life. This is a very candid and conversation about one of Montreal's most enduring radio figures. By the way, if you are listening to the episode expecting him to say something bad about someone - it doesn't happen. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteCore Image StudiosMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 214Julie James: Musically, Vocally, Personally

In this episode Julie and I talk about working from home, having to adjust while doing multiple radio tasks including imaging, music programming, music meetings, and building a home office. It's the little things like an extra monitor or a chair to endure prolonged periods of work. I also asked Julie about the AC format and how it has evolved over the last few years, some of the tools she uses to help make music decisions, what it all takes to keep great radio stations sounding awesome, and what she learned from Valerie Geller. We also talked about her time in Edmonton and London, Ontario programming and her eventual move back to Toronto where she has worked with Rogers since 2009. In this episode Julie and I talk about working from home, having to adjust while doing multiple radio tasks including imaging, music programming, music meetings, and building a home office. Ep 213Alan Cross: What Happens To Music?

E

Alan Cross loves music. Over the last few months we have done a few episodes discussing radio on a pandemic planet. But what about the music industry? What about the business side of music? It is especially curious given that music's entire business model has been turned on its head since 1999. Income has shifted from selling physical music to subscriptions and live touring; the latter of which is now effectively cancelled for this year, and possibly next year.In this episode, Alan talks about the latest round of RIAA takedowns to hit podcasting and how it's problematic for podcasters who violate copyright but also for musicians who are essentially leaving money on the table. We discussed the durability of the Ongoing History of New Music and how it has transitioned into becoming one of the planet' most downloaded podcast. We talked about the impact the pandemic is having on the music industry, how musicians are reverting to new marketing strategies and how concert promoters like Live Nation are handling the severe downturn in business.Alan is also the host of the Geek and Beats podcast and also manages a music blog called A Journal of Musical Things. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatrax NLogic See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 212Stu Jefferies: Mornings Boom 97.3 Toronto

E

If you're a Gen Xer, you likely know Stu Jefferies. He was the host of the venerable CBC TV show Good Rockin' Tonight which ran from 1983 to 1993. The Canadian reply to NBC's Friday Night Videos carried it's weight and powered the Cancon to kids whose parents were too cheap to spring for MuchMusic. Yes... this was a thing. If all you know about Stu is his stint on TV, then here is the rest of the radio story. It all started in Winnipeg, went to Saskatchewan, Vancouver, Edmonton, and then back to Vancouver, Burlington, and finally Toronto. There was some country thrown in, some Country television, and finally he landed at what became Boom.In this episode you'll get your fill of Winnipeg and what it mean to grow up on the legendary radio in the city that sprung the Guess Who, Randy Bachman and Neil Young. You'll also hear how he led a hectic travel schedule to accommodate working on television. And finally, with the pandemic in full swing, we discuss what it is like to work from home doing radio with podcasting's most popular tool, the Rodecaster Pro. (Yes, Stu even provides a review)As always there is more on the episode webpage including tons of additional video footage of things I consider important. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNlogicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 211Getting Messy with Jesse and Jenna

E

When we had Jenna on our podcast 18 months ago, she was in the throes on getting ousted from a gig she loved on a station where they were working hard and building a following. It's a tall order to compete in a market like Ottawa where their direct competition is #1 and have been for 15 years. Since then, Jesse and Jenna launched a podcast and with the help of Blast The Radio, they have found the podcast strut after 200 episodes. Like any podcaster who is in it for the long haul, they had to make decisions of what worked and what didn't work. What didn't work was doing a radio show on podcast. Instead they looked as each episode as a long form break. And then the numbers took off.In this episode, I catch up with Jesse and Jenna and tremendous news everyone... they are still willing to work in radio. They come equipped podcast ready, social media savvy and ready to rock quarter hours again. They are making content and much of it can be repurposed for radio. It's not all sex ya know. This is our first episode where we streamed the show and then took the audio to podcast. You can click above for the podcast stream and below to watch it all on Youtube. I'd love your feedback about this as there is a push amongst podcasters to be everywhere - and YouTube doesn't make the my cash register ring the way a podcast download does. Ep 210Jay Richardson: Power by Day, Jets Voice at Night.

E

Here's something you need to know about Jay Richardson. He's a really nice guy. Know what else? He's a true empathetic soul who cares. Which is why he always feels a little uneasy about the present and especially the future. However, we spoke a lot about the past in this episode.Jay is the afternoon drive host at Power 97 in Winnipeg, which is where he started the on-air portion of his radio career back in 2007. One day while worrying about the future, he came into my office and we can up with a plan that would include him being an on air personality. It wasn't long before he worked at two other radio companies, a credit union and as a salesman outside radio before return back to where he felt most comfortable - on air. Jay has also been the voice of the Winnipeg Jets inside the building. Yes, that's him announcing all the penalties, goals, assists and in-house announcements at Bell MTS Place. It's a job he has had since the days of the Manitoba Moose and we spent a fair amount of time talking about what it was like to have the Winnipeg Jets come back in 2011. Jay took a leave of absence last November from both his roles at Power 97 and the Winnipeg Jets and shares where he is at and what he has been up to.There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 209Lochlin Cross: Loc'r Room Talk

E

Lochlin Cross is the morning show host at Cruz 95.7 in Edmonton along with Grant Johnston and James White. He spent time in Winnipeg and Edmonton programming two heavy hitter rock stations in Power 97 and K-Rock 97.3. Which got switched back to K97 at some point but we were too lazy to look it up. He also did on air stints at other rock powerhouses like 100.3 The Bear in Edmonton and the Max in Prince George. And why doesn't he play Rush? And what's the deal with the Harmonica he whips out at concerts and on the LRT? And is it true he doesn't like to appear on podcasts? In this episode, all these questions get answered.

Ep 208Abe Hefter: How To News and Sports

E

Abe Hefter and I finally crossed paths in 2002. I recall hearing him on CJFM (FM96) in the 80's, and in 2002 we convened on Fort Street at that station when CHOM, Mix96 and CJAD merged itself into one entity. Abe began to transition into academia in 2003 when he received an opportunity to teach part time at Concordia University. There's something about teaching that brings out the energy in Abe. Very simply, you can hear it in the episode when we talk about inspiring the next generation of broadcasters. In this episode, Abe and I track his career in short order which included stops at notable radio stations like CFNY, CKEY, CKNW, CJFM, and CJAD. He also told us what it was like to be call Montreal Canadiens hockey games. Abe has always done a little of everything, and today that includes hosting a blues show on WWUH 91.3, on campus at the University of Hartford. We also discussed in depth about social media and the impact it is having on news, and whether a platform should be censoring its users. Abe said Twitter was his "go-to" so give him a follow. We also referenced other episodes which featured former personalities and creators now teaching. This includes:Dave Bannerman, Nova Scotia Community CollegeDonna Halper, Lesley UniversityCarlos Benevides, Conestoga CollegeThere's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 207Mistress Carrie: Now Unfiltered and Uncensored

E

Mistress Carrie spent 22 years on air and a handful more working in promotions at WAAF. She spent most of her life before that listening and loving the station. She figured one day it would all end with her "moving on" as many in the business do. But what she and many did not expect was for its parent company to sell the frequency to K-Love for ten million dollars; something that also happened to the Sound in Los Angeles. On February 20, WAAF ceased to exist, leaving Boston without the Active Rock station that gave birth to bands like Godsmack, and built hits like Shinedown's cover of Simple Man. (If you think we are making this up, the clip is in the podcast)In this episode, we cover Carrie's early days at the station and how WAAF went from being a Worcester station to a Boston mainstay. Some of it had to do with people migrating to the suburbs, but it doesn't hurt that the station built relationships with artists, sports figures and actors. We discussed the loss of the station and how it has left a hole in the heart of her and the WAAF listeners. (Subtle Boston music reference in there....)For now, you can find Mistress Carrie on her new podcast which you should subscribe to immediately. You can expect participation from many of the people who have her cell number like David Draiman from Disturbed, Godsmack, Shinedown, Cory Taylor from Slipknot, Adam Gonthier from Three Days Grace and many others.Fearless prediction: Her podcast is on Simplecast which was just purchased from Pandora/Sirius XM - there's room for her up there, isn't there? There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxThe NLogic Services Division,See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 206Heather Osgood: Podcast Advertising 101

Heather Osgood is the founder of True Native Media and answered all of our questions about podcast advertising. I first met Heather back in 2017 and was fascinated with the vision she had for her company. While the idea of media buying was not new, being a media buyer for podcasts was. It is believed that podcast advertising will hit a billion dollars by 2021, and I took interest in the methods used to connect podcasters with podcast ads. A few weeks later, I shifted this podcast to a new podcast host and began to experience the benefits of dynamic ad insertion; namely the ability to increase our ad inventory. In this episode, Heather explains how mid-level podcasters can access ad dollars for their show. (Yes it starts with having an IAB certified host). But more importantly, Heather explains what dynamic ad insertion is, who needs it and what exactly is the IAB and what IAB certified or compliant metrics are. We also discuss the difference between what is a useful stat (Downloads) and what is a vanity stat. (Apple Podcast Rankings) It may be that your podcast is ready to be monetized with podcast ads and Heather debunks the whole process.I mentioned that Heather is a great follow on LinkedIn - please follow her here and her company here. Also if you are looking to monetize your podcast - you don't necessarily need podcast ads to do it - schedule a call with me and I'll point you in the right direction. We also have more information and links to a few handy tools including a list of IAB Certified hosts.

Ep 205Jillene Khan: Magic, Madison and Minneapolis

Jillene Khan is the afternoon host on Magic 98 in Madison, Wisconsin. Her story to radio is rooted in Minneapolis. From growing up listening to great personalities like Tony Fly from KDWB and Tom Bernard on KQRS to a time when her family was apart of Dave Ryan's Christmas Wish back in the 90's. Jillene is an ideal guest to bring on at a time when many people in her hometown are struggling with death of George Floyd at the hands 4 Minneapolis police officers. In the episode, you'll hear about Jillene's rise through the radio ranks as she goes Country in the Quad Cities and Milwaukee, and then the decision to move to Madison, WI. She also spoke about coming out to her listeners how accepting her friends were. And by friends, we mean radio listeners. Jillene points out that it's about friends and not fans.Jillene is also a good follow on Facebook Instagram and Twitter too.)There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNlogic's Services division.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 204Carrie Doll: On Air and in The Chair

I met Carrie Doll in the late 90's at CFRN Television in Edmonton. She was a reporter and later a news anchor. She covered the events of 9/11 from the anchor desk in Calgary and learned how to report without a script. The youngest of ten children from Fairview, Alberta, Carrie was a natural when it came to communicating and public speaking. She had an incredible run on CFRN-TV in the anchor chair alongside Daryl McIntyre. We spoke about "the Chair" in the physical and metaphorical sense. With so many great broadcasters having occupied the chair previously, Carrie knew that sitting in it required great responsibility. In this episode we re-connected for the first time in 18 years and took a small walk down broadcasters row in Edmonton. We spoke about the people who sat before her on CFRN-TV (Daphne Kuhn, Leslie Miller, Shawna Randolph) and others who graced the Edmonton airwaves who have gone on to larger markets. (Todd Battis, Tara Nelson, Darren Dutchyshen, Catherine MacDonald, Brian Mudryk, Graham Richardson, Ian Leonard, and so many more)Today, Carrie hosts a weekly podcast called the Inner Circle which you should connect to here. Carrie is also a public speaking coach and was kind enough to share some of her expertise on the show. Ep 203Kim Blair: Finally A Guest From New Zealand

E

I met Kim Blair back in 2013. He was looking to make a change in his radio career and was leaving Australia behind in search of a more a country that was going to offer more of a challenge for him. Consolidation has caught up with Australia and Canada as well. In the months after we had dinner together, he found his new home in Auckland, New Zealand, where the radio is as competitive as any radio market names New York or Los Angeles.Kim grew up in Perth, Australia and started his radio career there. North Americans who have no grasp of Australia, don't understand the sheer size if the country. Firstly, there are those who call it an island... it is not. However, New Zealand is an island. I have never really considered how remote Perth is from other cities like Sydney and Brisbane. The driving and distance is the same between Toronto and Vancouver. We also discussed some of intricacies of radio in Australia, and how it varies differently with the radio in New Zealand. He also mentioned that New Zealand is a country that continually punches over his weight when it comes to performance. (See Below) Kim is also the first person from New Zealand to be in the podcast, and the third with an Australian accent after Ronnie Stanton and Matt Sutton. You can connect to Kim's Voiceover website if you need an Australian voice for your roster.

Ep 202Evo Terra's Podcast Pontifications

Evo Terra is the host of Podcast Pontifications. A short form podcast providing insights into the future of podcasting. As luck would have it, news of the Joe Rogan signing to Spotify broke the day before recording of the episode. I met Evo in Orlando at Podcast Movement last August and he shared some of his tips and tricks with me regarding how to refine solo podcast presentation. There were also some things I didn't know about Evo, including that his son was a hockey goalie. That's only surprising to me because Canadians can be snobs and believe that no one plays hockey in Arizona or California in Florida unless they are employed by one of the local NHL teams. Although I do know that Matthew Tkachuk was born there; a given in that his dad was relocated to Phoenix when the Winnipeg Jets moved to the desert in 1995.In this episode we discuss how Evo went from filling in on KFYI in Phoenix, to Satellite radio and then to podcast. We discussed a few of his books including Podcasting for Dummies and The Beer Diet. (Which is what you think it is) I ask about the importance of metrics, should you release your podcast in seasons, and the departure of Joe Rogan to Spotify and why podcasters freak out whenever change is afoot. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogic.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Jason Barrett returns to answer my sports related questions. Normally I don't bring Jason on until this first week of September when we look forward to the new NFL football season and talk about Sports broadcasting. However, these are not normal times for Sports radio and now is a good time to unpack what's going to happen. Ep 200Dana Marshall: Morning Radio, Prince and a Podcast

E

Dana Marshall loves radio, loves the music of Prince, and has found the perfect audio life balance with both. He does mornings and is program director at 103.3 WKFR in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He is currently seeking a co-host for that morning show, so if you think that is you - apply within. Much like Melz On the Mic, who was a guest on the podcast in June 2018, Dana knows local, social and vital. Our meeting at the Conclave in 2018 led to a discussion about podcast which then led to the creation of the My Prince Story Podcast. The show is now in its second season and is the 4th most downloaded amongst the 14 we work with. Dana and I also get into the weeds about what ails radio, but also why we get excited about it too. He also challenged me to think about how we would have handled a pandemic in 1995 without solid internet.I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I loved recording it! Ep 199Sheryl Worsley: KSL Radio, Hit Podcasts, and Post-Pandemic Broadcasting

This week, Sheryl Worsley from KSL Radio in Salt Lake City. While being a news director for around 20 years, she shifted in 2015 to audio and audience development in the Bonneville cluster's digital space. Sheryl and her team saw the value in podcast when a news series they were putting together was better suited for podcast than radio. Thus the hit podcast COLD— a true crime series covering the case of Susan Powell, was picked up by podcast powerhouse Wondery and soared up the podcast chart rankings. The podcast series covers every aspect of the case, every detail, every piece of evidence. In this episode, we spoke about the nature of working on a hit podcast like COLD, the early plans, the numbers, and what's next. Also, COVID-19’s impact on listenership on both podcast and radio. Finally, we wondered what the radio workplace is going to look like post-pandemic.Sheryl also tipped shared that KSL is working on some new podcasts - keep this page bookmarked to see their latest. Ep 198A Mass Shooting During A Pandemic

This episode is a little different. Over the weekend, a 22 people lost their lives in a mass murder spree that covered 100 kilometers in Nova Scotia. Monday morning, Q104 in Halifax and a number of Stingray radio stations came together to pivot programming towards the hearts of their listeners. To understand what it takes to make those changes, you need to understand the people affected. Nova Scotia has had more than its fair share of disasters in the last century, and radio has been there to weather every storm and see its listeners through. This is what radio does best.In this episode, I shelve my original plan of talking about the 1,000,000th podcast to go into Apple Podcasts and react to the great radio I listened to on Monday on Q104 in Halifax, and 89.3 K-Rock in Kentville. We explore how connected Maritimers are to one another, using myself as an example having lived there for 5 years. There are about 2 degrees of separation in every relationship - or at least it feels that way. We also speak with Q104 program director Trevor Wallworth spoke to me about how he and senior management at Stingray, Steve Parsons and Steve Jones formulated a plan to get the Maritimers healing. Also Darrin Harvey who appeared on this podcast episode recently, shared parts of his show from Monday too.

Ep 197Steve Reynolds: Coaching Through Crisis

There I was flipping through Facebook and seeing Steve Reynolds comment about hearing something he felt was out of place on the radio in the era of COVID-19. This is not to be confused with the non-COVID comments about Sirius Yacht Rock playing a lot of crappy B-Sides on their channel. (He's right. No one wants to hear B-Grade Little River Band song. Ever. With so many radio people and radio shows in flux Steve is good person to bring on right now to talk about our new surroundings. We also got into some great discussions on the role of social media and how important it is "go live" more than ever. Also this might be a time to adjust your personal brand rather than doubling down on the emotions that may not matter to many people right now. And what happens when the two or three person morning show starts to struggle with the "at home" dynamics that have been put upon them?FREE! Inside this podcast Steve offers up a free promo idea for your radio station. It's like a prize in the Cracker Jacks box!Bonus material:Steve made mention of a great bit from Hawkeye & Katelyn at KSCS in Dallas featuring Sam Hunt and his wife buying a bidet. Also Steve said he was feeling the "weight" from staying home. Here's a podcast episode you might want to check out if you're feeling heavy. Lianne Laing and Eliza Kingsford talk about managing your Quarint-eating.Finally, if you have any drink recipes for Steve, please e-mail him. He is not a cocktail kinda guy generally, but he has the time to see what all the fuss is about. Personally, I think a caesar is a good drink before a carnivorous meal. Ep 196Kipper McGee: Brandwith on Demand

It's no wonder that Kipper McGee wound up in radio have grown up in between two great radio markets in Milwaukee and Chicago. He's a broadcast consultant, author and host of the Brandwidth on Demand podcast alongside David Martin. The show has been in production for as long as this show has, and it has an A list of broadcasters appearing for what turns out to be, "not your average quarter hour".In this episode, Kipper and I spoke about his years in places I have never been to. Des Moines, San Diego, and Orlando which I just recently went to for the first time. Asking innocuous questions about those places gave me some insight into the radio that was made. You won't be able to see Kipper in his usual places this summer because like the rest of us - he's at home. But you can connect with the podcast.I was a guest on the podcast back in August of 2018.... Ep 195Sunni Puric: From War Torn to Washington

Sunni Puric works weekdays apart of the Joe Clair Morning Show on Rhythmic/CHR radio WGPC 95.5FM. Her journey to radio is unlike any other. This marks the first time I have asked what it was like spending your teenage years in a refugee camp in Bosnia. While the world saw a picturesque Yugoslavia during the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, it was 12 years later that th country fell into civil war. Sunni was open about sharing her times in the camp, and about her family's pathway to America. In this episode, we spoke about moving from Bosnia to Hamtramck, Michigan where she caught the radio bug listening to WJLB in Detroit. learned English watching Mama's Family, and found her way into WJLB as an intern at the age of 18. Sunni moved to Miami to work at Power 96, then went to New York before landing in the midday spot at WGPC and then on to the morning show with Joe Clair and Guy Lambert. Sunni also does a weekly hit with Fox 5, and is great Twitter and Instagram follow. The Washington Post wrote a very extensive piece on Sunni back in 2014.There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 194Susie Erjavec Parker: Content Creation in Social Isolation

Susie Erjavec Parker knows lots about social media, blogs, communication strategy and working from home. At one point she had 3 children under 5 years old in the house while juggling clients, and appointments and everything else that comes with running a business. With so many people working from home for the first time in radio, I though it would be a good time to bring Susie on to talk about working from home now - and planning a marketing strategy as it pertains to your recovery strategy. Her company, Sparker Strategy Group has does media and marketing planning, and she says there is no better time for radio than right now.In this episode, we also talked about a lot of the social media changes that have occurred over the last week. There are more people going live on Facebook and Instagram than ever before. For example at 3pm Eastern, Noon Pacific, my Instagram lit up with 5 live conversations from Bachelor and Bachelorette cast-offs that suddenly had a lot of free time on their hands. Susie has also been tracking social media behaviour and the whole internet appears to be going full throttle at 9pm Eastern.Susie also made mention of a post on her Winnipeg Mom Blog about scheduling recess using "Zoom" that her kids loved, along with their classmates. That blog post is here. Also totally useful are her full tips for working from home in the COVID-19 era in case you failed to take notes during this podcast.

Ep 193Hey Radio, This is it.

E

It's been nearly 20 years since radio has had to shift into crisis mode. The Corona Virus or COVID-19 has arrived and broadcasters find themselves having to write rules, redo formats, get more information sourced, while dealing with staffs that have children coming home and everyone faced with the challenge of working from home. In this episode, I spoke about the importance of working from home, and get down to the nitty gritty of what it means to be a broadcaster during a pandemic. Here’s the article from Perry Michael Simon I was talking about.I also made made mention of the Jacobs Media one which is coming up on March 26, always an important survey because it really serves as radio's report card. The Infinite Dial Study was released March 19th by Edison Research. You can get a copy here. Also Coleman Insights has this very handy list of tips. ========There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 192Josie Dye: Bringing The Fun

E

Josie Dye is the morning host at Indie 88 in Toronto. The longtime 102.1 The Edge personality who also did hosting duties for Cosmo TV, and W Network took a chance on jumping to Indie 88. It has paid off well. You can hear it in Josie's voice. She is having more fun than ever at a station that has all the sounds and feels of any successful alternative radio station. In this episode, we spoke about her early days studying at Ryerson while working at Mix 99.9, which was at its peak with an 8 share. Rather than head out to a smaller market, Josie found her way to the Edge where she eventually found her way to middays; working for great programmers like Ross Winters and Dave Farough. We reminisce about those old knock 'em down and drag 'em out music meetings over adding a song to the playlist. We also spoke at great length about life at home, that time she fucked up the national anthem, and why she is so heavily involved in public speaking. Dave Jackson is the Owner/Headmaster at the School of Podcasting and also a support specialist at Libsyn. He was there back in the early days of podcast and has helped thousands launch their podcasts with his talks, online tips and podcasts. Dave is a Hall of Famer and a regular contributor to Podcast Business Journal. In this episode we discussed some of the many stages of podcasting's evolution including its early days, the advent of iTunes, Serial, radio's entry into the podcast space, the gradual rise of listenership and the recent announcement on the creation of the Podcast Academy and the feathers that were ruffled in the process. Ep 190Carlos Benevides: Jacked on Radio

Radio is a lot like the mob: "Just when you thought I was out, they pull me back in." Okay, that's an exaggeration but for Carlos Benevides, leaving 91.5 The Beat in Kitchener and transitioning to Conestaga College to teach radio just made sense. So does his new lunchtime show for the Jack radio stations "Jack Up the 80's". which can be heard in Halifax, Calgary, Smith Falls, London and Victoria. As we recorded this episode, Carlos had been a dad for one week and was settling in to life post morning radio. In this episode we riffed on working the overnight shifts in large markets, making the jump away from Toronto to Kitchener, and eventually pivoting from radio to teaching. Ep 189Zenga McCurdy: Soo Good

Zenga McCurdy called me back in May of 2018 and asked for some feedback on his morning radio show. Since then I have made a point of listening to the show every once and a while to hear the progress. I meant to grab a beer with him in Toronto last year but we only had enough time for a "Hi, How are you?" and then we were off to whatever we were off to. I am very pleased that I got to have this conversation with him about his Kitchener/Waterloo upbringing where he confesses he wasn't always on the right side of an issue. He explains why he chose radio and how in his first job in rural B.C., he faced down racist slurs and marched onward with the support of his parents who have always been there for him.Today, Zenga is the morning host on Kiss 100.5 along with Casey. Sault St. Marie may be one of those Great Lakes towns where the hockey players will always be a little more famous than the media personalities. I totally blanked that Wayne Gretzky played his junior hockey there for one season before he went to the Indianapolis Racers and then the Oilers.

Ep 188Jon Gay: JAG in Detroit

E

Jon Gay has a radio story that is probably not unlike yours if you have worked on the programming side of radio. It involves a little bit of the WKRP theme song, "Town to Town. Up and Down the dial...". Jon's radio career started with an internship at Kiss 108 in his hometown Boston. His stint at Syracuse University got him even closer to his dream on being a top radio personality. His tenure in Vermont, Detroit, and New Orleans all ended with radio cutbacks - which later became known as "restructuring and what is now affectionately known today as "dislocation".In this episode, we talked about those struggles and how Jon rebounded by starting Jag In Detroit Podcasting which creates branded podcasts for companies. Admittedly, we spent a fair amount of time on Vermont radio because I am very familiar with that radio market and travel through the area often. (I first heard Jon on WXXX (95 Triple X) all those years ago.I promised you a few links in the show notes including:Jon's attempt at a phone detox while on a cruise. Ep 187David Phillips: No Data Strategy Required

David Phillips from NLogic is an admitted nerd when it comes to data. He really loves it. Something he is very good at is deciphering how data should be applied to your brand, your radio stations, your strategies, and your ad sales. However, one thing you should definitely not have is a data strategy. He speaks about numbers having blind spots and becoming too attached to the data we love and not challenging it enough. A couple of times a year, I'll get together with David and we will catch up on anything and everything as it relates to the numbers broadcasters come into contact with. Here is our YouTube discussion from last year. And by the way, please subscribe to the channel when you are there.NLogic has been a supporter of the show since 2016 and many Canadian listeners to the show will know NLogic as the distributor of their radio sales software. Even if you are listening to this from outside of Canada, David will give you a perspective on how too much data could be overload for what you are trying to accomplish as a brand. The accent by the way is English - and David appeared on the podcast back in 2017 where we talked about... wait for it. Data. Ep 186Seth Resler: Solutions For The Dislocated

E

We invited Seth Resler back to the podcast after he penned a blog called, "Is There Life After Radio?" Many of the episodes in this series feature a moment when someone was fired and tell the story of their radio afterlife. The podcast itself was born out of my firing in 2014, the subsequent quest for work in 2015, before landing on podcast in early 2016 and never looking back. Today I have a voiceover business and a podcast company that helps people, businesses and brands build through podcast. The path to it resembles a lot about what Seth wrote about in his blog, including many attempts to swing for the fences, having a resume chalk full of call letters, undervaluing myself and playing "on tilt" as Seth describes it.In this episode, Seth and I share a few of the things we learned about being in between jobs as radio program directors. For the last few weeks, Seth has been putting together a directory that displaced radio people can use to reconnect to the industry. Ep 185Lori Lewis: Remedial Social Media

Lori Lewis is back on our show for the third time? Why so often? Because the world of social media moves that quickly. The last time we had Lori on the show, Instagram Stories was just starting to become a thing and Tik Tok wasn't even a thing. In fact - you might have still been involved with your SnapChat account and over-posting by today's standards on Facebook. Lori is now out on her own working with radio groups and teaching them all about the ways to engage their listeners on social media, and get the sales team selling their digital assets. Lori Lewis Media launched recently, but that doesn't mean she will stop doing some of the other things you might know her for, including being the Chair of the Conclave Summer Radio Learning Conference (which you should go to), and her column in AllAccess.com, Merge. In this episode, Lori and I talked about how many in radio are Introverted Extroverts, and cited an article from 2018; I believe this is it. We also talked about the importance of keeping your passport up-to-date and about how the Internet minute Graphic became so popular. You can see a copy of that graphic on our blog page. Please use social media to SHARE this episode far and wide.

Ep 184Christian Hall: More Than Radio

E

There's a reason why Christian Hall thinks differently. He has to. He is the National Program Director for Harvard Broadcasting which is a radio company first. He oversees multiple alternative stations; a format which doesn't even exist a number of top ten markets in Canada, and he believes that talent development is about airchecks, and feedback. (We went into large detail in our first episode with him which you can find here) This time around we spoke about the rise of alternative radio in both Edmonton and Calgary, he also summarized the legal case involving Corus v. Harvard revolving around the use of the name Power 107. (The station has since relaunched as Play 107 in Edmonton) We also discussed the new continuous measurement system for diary markets, and what is on the line if the CRTC moves ahead on a review of the radio regs.We also talked about X929's new marketing campaign, which I found out has been adopted across the company. Have a look at the video and see it for yourself. It's clear that the radio is not the only way to enjoy the station. Christian recalls James Cridland's presentation at Canadian Music Week last year, that spurned more than one good idea he took home to Calgary.By the way - our discussion with James Cridland is right here and it's a good one. Ep 183Perry Michael Simon: What's Next?

It's been 2 years since we have caught up with Perry Michael Simon from AllAccess.com on this podcast. He has a pretty good idea of what is going on in the radio and podcast business given that he writes about it weekly, provides talk topics on a twitter account, and attends a dozen radio and radio-related conferences annually. If you get a chance, follow his twitter account just for the joy in hearing about all the goings on at these conferences. He is also the host on the Evening Bulletin podcast; a two minute pieces of news and subject commentary - named after the long departed Philadelphia newspaper. (RIP 1847-1982)In this episode, we talk about how little has changed about radio, while everything around radio has changed. We also wonder what the next breakout hit is going to be for both radio and podcast. After all, it has been 18 years since classic hits appeared on the scene, and 4 since Serial become a podcast phenomenon. What's next? We aren't sure - but Perry has some ideas of what needs to happen.

Ep 182Still Another Very Terry Christmas

E

Terry Dimonte loves Christmas, and I love doing a podcast with him to discuss... whatever. Sometimes we talk about radio, and other times it's just life. This year it was a lot of the latter. So many of the things we spoke about can be found on the blog page which is located at Sound Off Podcast dot com.We talked about Terry's move to Griffintown in Montreal which was a big mistake. This led to conversations about the poor designs of all cities including Montreal and Winnipeg. And we shifted our attention to politics and talked about the recent Canadian election and then it all devolved into how i believe people are troubled. Special thanks to my son Andrew who came on the show for a few minutes. We used the audio without his permission but this will ensure that his college fund stays afloat. At this point, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, including our producer Evan Surminski who puts these thing together every week. Ep 181John Mamola: Talking Tampa Sports Radio

I'm reminded every time I travel through Tampa on my way to Sarasota, how busy the radio market is. Equally busy is the number of sports teams that compete for media attention. By my count there are the NFL Buccaneers, NHL Lightning, Major League Baseball Rays, and plenty of college football needing attention from the Gators, Seminoles and University of South Florida Bulls. That's a lot to program and keep track of. John Mamola is the program director of Sports Radio 95.7 WDAE in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, and shared his thoughts on the audience and how he can best disperse the overload of sports in the area.Add to that, many in the audience and in the stands are displaced northerners, (like himself) who come with pre-determined team allegiances that aren't local. In this episode, you'll find out why the NHL Lightning do so much better than that other team in Florida, the Panthers, what his thoughts are on the futures of Jameis Winston and the Tampa Bay Rays. We also chatted about working within the confines of carrying National radio shows like The Herd with Colin Cowherd and The Dan Patrick Radio Show,John is a great Twitter Follow ... so follow him. Ep 180Laura G: Broadcasting to Gen Z

In this episode Laura discusses the changing face of radio, building a youthful audience, using social media and the importance of being on the ground in your market.Laura was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia where she attended Georgia State. In college she started out in computer science before moving to a degree in journalism. Laura got her start in radio working the graveyard shift at the campus radio station Album88.“It was a really cool thing being someone who got to introduce people to new music. The radio station used to compete with 99x in Atlanta. Album 88 to this day is still known for that. It’s definitely still on the forefront of introducing people to non-traditional artists and genres,” says Laura.Laura remembers her time working the 2-5 a.m. shift fondly. Saying it was as close as she got to working alternative radio. The station and the time slot gave her the freedom to play bands like The Rubens and Lime Cordial. She interned with Adam Bomb. When Adam was working on the on air portion of the show, Laura would attend local events in his place. “I would go out basically interact, take pictures get audio, do stuff for social and kinda, you know, getting an understanding and a taste of street activation for a radio station. It’s important to keep up that face to face interaction and showing people we are more than people that play music. We interact, we attend local events and support community,” says Laura. After graduation and before moving north Laura worked in promotions and as a board op at the Cumulus stations: Rock 100.5, 99x ,and Kicks 101.5 and O.G. 97.9 in Atlanta. Today she in on evenings in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania. Working at CHR/WBHT which has two transmitters 97.1 Wilkes Barre and 95.7 Scranton (Home of Dunder Mifflin’s top branch).Laura works a time slot that was previously not held by local talent. She says it has been nice to connect with her audience and retrain them to expect a live body in the station on evenings. She notes it is fun to stay involved with all things Gen-Z using Instagram and Facebook live to interact with her audience, but says social media can be very time consuming and that she prefers to schedule it in rather than letting it run her show. Twitter is the platform she uses least and that like it or not, you’re gonna have to use TikTok if you want to capture a youthful audience.Every Tuesday CHR/WBHT does a High School takeover. A bunch of high school students come in and take over programming at the radio station. The station has a pizza party and gets imaging, social and word of mouth out of the deal. “We just hang out get to know them and they really appreciate that,” says Laura. She knows this is helping to build the next generation of listeners and talent."Radio is changing but not going away. It is in changing the way we interact with our listeners that we will keep radio alive." Her message to anyone who dreams of a career in radio: “keep pushing through.”Laura hopes to one day be a program director at an alternative station.Laura and Matt go to the Conclave in Minneapolis every year, along with several others who have been on this podcast. It's an event she calls exciting and inspiring for all things radio. Ep 179Matt Fogarty: Making the Jump

E

If you want to get pointed in the right direction to break into voice acting listen to this episode. Matt Fogarty is a name you may not be familiar with, but if you listen to the radio in western Canada you have probably heard his voiceFogarty is currently the creative director for Island Radio a group of 6 stations located on Vancouver Island. Fogarty says he loves going to work and the creative interaction that happens at his day job in radio.Beyond radio Fogarty says he spends what feels like every other waking moment doing voice over work. Matt Fogarty made the jump from radio voice work a few years ago. In this episode of Sound Off he discusses what it takes to make it in the voiceover industry. Shares a list of tips for those aspiring to break into voice acting and talks about the importance of developing a close network.“It starts with an idea, then you’ve gotta execute on that idea by having an awesome script, Then you’ve gotta have the talent interpret and understand that script, deliver and perform that script. And then you need an amazing producer to put it all together,” says FogartyFogarty markets heavily to radio stations and much of his work comes from imaging where he works closely with Hoss Management. ( https://hossmgmt.com/) “He’s a brilliant marketer himself,” says Fogarty. He also shows love for Eric Romanowski for demos, and some of his favorite voice coaches Nancy Wolfson, Mary Lynn Wisner and Dave Walsh.Fogarty has worked for big name national brands including Subway and Kleenex. In this episode he also explains that clients are looking for talent that comes off as “real” and “natural”.“You’re an actor there’s no doubt about it. You’re not a radio DJ coming down to voice a mattress blowout sales spot black Friday in between breaks. You are conveying a brand message and that brand has probably spent a whole lot of money figuring out their targeting and their demographics and they want to make sure when they hire somebody they’re gonna be able to deliver on all those brand pillars.” He says this can be as simple as adlibbing once in a while or altering the pace of your speech to avoid sounding sing-songy.At this point in the episode Matt Cundill tries to sell Fogarty a mattress.

Ep 178Shannon Burns: Coming Full Circle

Shannon Burns is a familiar voice across Canadian radio. Her show iHeartRadio Nights with Shannon Burns airs nationally on 14 iHeartRadio stations, and she does evenings on the legendary radio station she grew up listening to, CHUM 104.5FM.On the podcast she talks about her career arc, how to plan a nationally syndicated show and suggests a name for the former Power 107 in Edmonton (Unicorn 107?).Shannon grew up in Burlington Ontario. She says that she has always been mildly obsessed with pop culture and so when it came time to apply for college, radio was the natural choice.A career in media was a choice her mother supported and helped her to achieve. “She is a firm believer in not chasing the dollar and going after what you’re interested in,” says Burns. After her time in college Shannon went out west to hone her radio skills. In 2014 she landed a job in Medicine Hat on Rock 105.3 (Rogers) where she worked as a morning show host and news anchor. In 2015, Shannonn moved to Virgin 104.9 in Edmonton where she worked her way up the ladder from 2015-2018 eventually becoming a midday announcer and assistant music director.Shannon loved her time out west, but she says the goal was always to work her way back to the Toronto market. Today she gets to interview some of the biggest names in music from Shawn Mendes to Katy Perry. “My goal is to make them my friends,” says Burns with a laugh. On the future of radio Shannon is very upbeat. She came into radio at a time when it was fusing with social media, and that the medium of radio allowed producers to become early adopters of social media and digital marketing strategies. The story is ongoing with the content produced in radio being about so much more than what goes out over the airwaves.

Ep 177Uncle Darrin Harvey: Getting Really Involved

Darrin Harvey and I met in late 1989 when he was going to fill in on some Christmas shifts on Magic 97 in Kentville, Nova Scotia. From the get go, I knew we would be friends. And while we never lived in the same time zone after I left in 1992, I never lost touch with Darrin. He ascended to mornings, was later fired in the early 2000's, only to return the when region got a new FM in 89.3 K-Rock. Once again, he ascended to mornings and he is the quintessential morning man for the region. Darrin has the playbook for connecting with listeners and yes it involves being involved. In this day and age when the practices are "Move all the small stuff to Facebook and promote it there so we can get another record in", Darrin not only puts it to air but then hosts the event outright.Sometimes the best marketing is just getting really involved. What is success in radio? After speaking to Darrin in this episode, I realized that it's about the number of people you touch, and the number of smiles you leave behind.Darrin made mention of my blog post from a few years ago called "The History of the Death of Radio" which you can feel free to read.

Ep 176Ross Davies: Programming, Measuring, and Regulating Radio

I met Ross Davies briefly on two occasions. Once in Montreal in the 90's and a second time in the 2000's again in Montreal. It was little more than a "Hi! How Are You?' but there was work to be done and the radio stories were going to have to come later. Fast forward to 2018 and we finally got to have that chat. Ross spent a good chunk of his career working for CHUM in the programming, operations and senior management positions. We went back to the beginning where he started his career with Moffatt Communications. He moved to Toronto in 1979 has worked with Standard Radio, Canadian Satellite Radio, Astral Media Radio and (as mentioned) CHUM Ltd. More recently, Ross served as Director of Member Engagement/Radio for Numeris, the leading provider ratings to broadcasters and advertisers. Ross was also part of the executive team at XM Satellite radio that launched Canada’s first satellite radio service in 2005. (The merger with Sirius came much later) We also dug into him co-creating the original Jack/Bob variety hits format with the launch of Bob-FM in Winnipeg in the spring of 2002.Ross is putting together some of the radio panels at Canadian Music Week this year and provided some intel into what we can expect May 20-22 when it all takes place. He also welcomes your feedback so shoot him an e-mail - but only after you listen to what he has shared. Ep 175Justin Dove: Sound Design

Justin Dove is really good at radio imaging. (He also admits he is an audio nerd) He started in his home province of Newfoundland and worked his way across Canada for companies both big and small. Then he started his own company, Core Image Studios. We may have used the term "radio imaging" to describe his work, but it goes a lot further than that; as Justin calls it Sound design. In this episode I asked him to define it and share some of his secrets in imaging that have landed him some top notch imaging contracts at radio stations like WEEI in Boston and Sirius XM. (We may have provided some examples too)Core Image Studios has been a supporter of the show for the last few years and we had the chance to meet for the first time at Canadian Music Week last May. Justin will be making a few appearances over the next few months including at the Ontario Association of Broadcasters this month, and the Barrett Sports Media summit in New York in February.

Ep 174Corey Carter: WIXX 101.1 Green Bay

E

Every year since 2013, I have loaded up the car for a football trip to see the Green Bay Packers. The team has a special relationship with the town that is unlike any other in sports. That extends to its local radio partner which clearly doesn’t behave like other radio stations in a medium or small market. WIXX 101.1 is staffed 24/7 with live personalities. The program director is Corey Carter who also pulls the 1-3pm shift on air. He spoke to me about his employer, Midwest Communications, the relationships developed with team members, the team, and the formula that has kept the station at number one since 1977.in this episode, we spoke about the difficulty in getting a decent hotel on game days. We solved that problem this year by staying with Kirsten and Gary. Ep 173Todd Cochrane: Podcast Questions Answered

Todd Cochrane can speak to it because he was there in the early days. In 2004, he jumped into podcasting; long before Apple became involved. As time went on he began to find ways to make money at it, including an early sponsorship deal with GoDaddy, and creating the podcast hosting company that we know as Blubrry. We try to address two very large questions in this episode: Where is podcasting headed, and what will radio's role in it be? We tackle a number of the podcast news stories, asking if the RSS Feed is in jeopardy, what radio can do to best invest in podcast, and is iHeart really number one in podcasting? (Depends how you want to count) We also ask to explain the importance of IAB Certification and if Soundcloud is a legitimate podcast host. (Again, it depends how you want to count)Todd is the host of the New Media Show with Rob Greenlee (who appeared on our podcast back in August of 2017), it airs live roughly every Saturday at Noon Eastern - but feel free to catch the podcast version or the video version on your own time.If you are looking for a podcast host with IAB certified metrics and web integration (and Todd explains why that's important in this episode) contact him here. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:MegatraxNLogicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 172Don Kollins: Radio to TV and Twitch

E

Don Kollins is kind of an ideal guest for this podcast. He is a Canadian living in California. He has worked in radio on both sides of the border. And he is innovative enough to use his experience to see a path to the future for radio. When he was the program director of Toronto's pre-eminent sports radio leader, the Fan 590, he found himself having to juggle a radio show on TV - which later became a TV show on radio, in the Bob McCown show. He sees an opportunity for every radio personality to have a digital relationship with Twitch. Once solely a gamers medium, radio personalities like Bubba the Love Sponge, Humble & Fred and The Milkman John Mielke have embraced the platform and build out their brands using Twitch.During the show, mention was made about the blog Fred Jacobs wrote about President Donald Trump using Twitch. You can read that here.We spoke to Don about his early days at Rawlco and Rogers, his move to Sports Radio and later to The Game 95.7 in San Francisco. I got to ask all about sports radio from the program director who succeeded Jason Barrett at that station. (Yes we will be having on a few more Sports Radio PD's over the next few months as the format is at the forefront of digital integration with radio)If you would like to get in touch with Don and know more about using Twitch for your radio station, please contact him here via LinkedIN. Ep 171Jim Harold: From Radio Sales to Paranormal Podcaster

Jim Harold began podcasting on the paranormal in 2005 and is among a handful of pioneers of podcasting. His programs have stood the test of time and The Paranormal Podcast and Campfire remain among the most popular in the genre. He also developed a premium tier and much to his surprise... worked! He started out in radio sales after originally considering television. When he was let go from CBS, he pushed all-in on Podcasting and he is now the host of a number of podcasts beyond the two aforementioned ones.As a result, he has also become a published author with his Campfire series. The first book was originally published by traditional publisher New Page Books, and since then Jim has taken the books independent. All five books are available in eBook and paperback at JimHaroldBooks.com and via Amazon.com.Jim lives in Ohio with his fantastic wife and two daughters and I had the pleasure of meeting him at Podcast Movement last August. We did the show using Squadcast instead of Skype. If you liked the sound quality, let me know. Ep 170Sean Ross: Music's Evolution on Radio

Sean Ross really knows music and radio. He's had a front row seat to how music has been consumed by radio listeners over the years. It's easy to see how Sean became so knowledgeable on the subjects of radio formats and music genres; his speaks of his affinity for CKLW, and also of a cross country bus ride which took him to Toronto in the summer of 1981. It's one thing to know formats in one country - but Sean understands the Canadian intricacies of music radio, and continues to schedule music in a few markets. In this episode, you'll hear about Top 40's highs and lows through the decades, the early days of Alternative when it was going mainstream, Rock radio's fragmentation and Sean also provides some tips on some of the planet's great radio stations you can listen to right now!(I've put a full list of all the stations on the episode show page which you can connect to here. And definitely sign up for Sean's Newsletter "Ross on Radio". Ep 169Dervla Trainor: V.O. North FOMO

V.O. North is a voiceover conference that has taken place in Toronto for the last two years. I have been fortunate to attend both. The first was held in May 2018 and was a one day event. The following was a two day gathering at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, featuring some of the top voiceover talent from around the world. In short, you missed out. Dervla Trainor along with Tanya Buchanan from TaDa! Voiceworks are the architects behind the event. Just click here to have a look at what you missed. Putting together a conference is a massive undertaking, but once you get to meet Dervla on our podcast episode, you will love her energy and be impressed with her ability to multi-task and get the job done. I pointed out during our chat that the mark of anything happens on the third lap around the track. Next year, VO North will become one of the premiere voiceover conferences in North America; and hopefully you can attend as this thing comes of age in 2020.Dervla has also opened up an online store full of V.O. North items.

Ep 168Charles Adler: A Talk Radio Therapy Session

E

Charles Adler joins me from his home in Vancouver for an hour to talk radio and political therapy. The Canadian election is on the way and it is all to be Trump Trump Trump on CNN and Fox News. So what's a media guy to do? We catch up with the wily Corus Radio News Talk host and discuss the early moments of the Federal Election. Yes we geek out a bit over it, but it not like any of the conversations we used to have over a cup of coffee when we worked together at CJOB in Winnipeg. Other subjects we touch on include the lack of UBER in our fair cities, and the possible return of the Montreal Expos.Podcasts Charles is currently listening to:Wait There's More (Corus Curiouscast) The Daily (New York Times)Post Reports (Washington Post) The Bulwark PodcastWhen Life Gives You Parkinsons (Curiouscast) There's more about this episode on our show page!
