Ep 167Dalby Does Radio

E

Back in 2015 when I was mulling doing a podcast, I came across Drew Dalby's Off Mic podcast which featured other radio personalities talking about their careers. The show was in the process of starting it's permanent hiatus once I decided to get the ball rolling on this. Drew Dalby is an excellent interviewer, drive host, football prognosticator and dad. He's also a good Twitter follow.Drew spoke to me about growing up in Canada's North and talking about life in Hay River, and early days in Inuvik. Then his progression from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology to Edmonton's 100.3 The Bear, Smithers, BC, Lloydminster and eventually Regina. Also in this episode, Drew touched on having worked with Devon Zelmer who passed away almost 5 years ago. Devon would do his daily Biased Sports Report. His videos are still posted on YouTube. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 166Jason Barrett: Sports Radio, Rights and Redux

Jason Barrett and I started our post-program director adventures around the same time. He had a strong resume as a Sports radio programmer, having worked at mainstays like the Fanatic in Philly, 590 the Fan in St. Louis and 95.7 The Game in San Francisco. He decided to enter the crowded radio consulting field with a specialization on sports radio, a decision he made after scanning the media landscape and his family situation. Need made a great choice.Jason has joined me annually in September to talk about the year in Sports, and to look ahead to the NFL season which kicks off this week. It goes without saying that I didn't get to everything I wanted to talk about with Jason, but even in the world of podcast where there are no limits - we have our limits. A few things to know about this episode:I did not have time to ask Jason about my favourite blog piece he wrote from last year. It involves the mess the Oakland A's found themselves in when they had a nasty break up with their media partner. It ended with a tweet. All I can think is - Who does this?We also had the opportunity to talk about some of the great imaging that makes it to sports station. Justin Dove is a supporter and sponsor of the podcast and Jason spoke of Justin's ability to capture the moment that WAS and paint a sonic picture of what is to come. Finally, a shout out to Jeff Schmidt who's name also came up on the podcast. Jeff is simply the best when it comes to audio and painting that picture using audio. Check out some of the amazing podcasts he has worked on - you have probably already heard his work! And Jeff has a blog you should follow if you are considering improving your sonic game.

Ep 165Andrew Beckler X92.9

E

Andrew Beckler is the morning host at X92.9 in Calgary. The station is pretty special in that it started nearly 13 years ago, has only had 1 program director in its time, and has been building it's audience since 2007 starting with a Hot Hot Heat concert to ring in the New Year. The station has also had very low staff turnover and developed a culture unlike any other in Canada; comparable only to KNDD 107.7 the Ed in Seattle. Anyhow - more about Andrew... who was raised in Saskatoon and still sports a watermelon hat and a green jersey. There are some incredible smarts to what Andrew and Seanna do every morning. The program director is clearly brilliant and we promise to have him back on the podcast shortly; Seanna has worked at some great stations including my alma mater 1003. The Bear in Edmonton. Then there's the podcast which has blown past 275,000 downloads over 450+ episodes. (Stop doing the math. You know that if you have 600 extra listeners to your show on another platform after 10am you would be fine with it)In this episode you will hear all about what it is like to be a morning personality at Canada's #1 Alternative radio station, what it takes to raise two boys and how wood working has been so helpful to the process.

Ep 164Ryan Wrecker: So How Was Podcast Movement?

E

Ryan Wrecker sent me a message earlier this week asking about my take aways from Podcast Movement which took place earlier this month in Orlando. In this episode we talk about where the podcast industry is headed and how radio is finding its way into it. We talk honestly and openly about where its all going and how radio is coping with it all.I also included a link to Ryan's interview with John O'Connor who talked about the media coverage of the Watergate Scandal back in the 70's. I made mention of Bryan Orr's HVAC School and his podcast (if you are interested in HVAC and Refrigeration) is located here. Ep 162Lisa Keys To Success

Sometimes it's all about the people you have around you. In 2014, Lisa Keys found herself working with people who were passionate about radio imaging and who knew what a great radio imaging voice can do for a radio station. People like Rob Vavrek, Program Director of 100.3 the Bear who was it's production and imaging guru since the station's inception in 1992, and later became PD in 2009. People like Gary McClenaghan who was producing there at the time - and is now the voice on great stations like Q100 in Atlanta, Indie 88 in Toronto and i92.9 WLMI in Milwaukee. And the voice they were working with? Jamie Watson who was featured on this podcast a little while back. When your career grows up around people like this - it becomes infectious.Lisa spoke to us about her success in voiceover to date, including being named to the Benztown 50 last year, how she has had success attending radio conferences, and what's in store for her at the VO North Conference she is attending this fall. You can hear Lisa on great radio stations around the world like:96.5 KOIT San Francisco92-5 XTU PhiladelphiaThe Rogers Country Network across Canada100.3 The Bear EdmontonHot 100.5 WinnipegTo have Lisa on your radio station - contact her through here websiteLisa will be attending VO North in Toronto September 21 and 22 in Toronto. Ep 161Matty Staudt From Broadcast to Podcast

E

Matty Staudt is someone I have been trying to get on the podcast for about a year. His busy work schedule at iHeart made scheduling difficult. However, a change in direction for Matty created the necessary time to have him on. Matty is starting a new venture called Jam Street Media. He had straddled both podcast and broadcast successfully for over a decade. From working as a producer for G. Gordon Liddy, to working at Stitcher, Matty has a good sense where the intersection of podcast and broadcast is located.

Ep 160Yukon Jack in a Shoot!

E

In Wrestling, a shoot is when two wrestlers go unscripted into the ring and have it out. Yukon Jack from 100.3 The Bear and I don't wrestle one another any more - but we did this podcast along the same lines as a shoot. Not your usual questions and not your usual answers. The longtime Edmonton morning man talked about some of his former program directors and co-workers and has learned lots from all along the way. Yukon has worked through about three eras of rock radio, and two separate morning shows to land alongside McCord and RyMy on the Worst Show Ever. He says radio is smarter than it was ten years ago, even if he admits that the status of a radio personality has declined in that time. One of my favourite people in the whole radio world! Ep 159The Milkman Continues to Blast the Radio

It's been nearly three years since we spoke to John Mielke, aka The Milkman. You might remember we had him on the show for episode 9. But that was a long time ago and so much has changed since then.He still has his websites including Blast The Radio and Milkman Unlimited. He's also added podcast producing to the mix as well. John tells us a little bit about the Jesse and Jenna podcast he produces, along with how he prepares for each show on Blast the Radio he does, and fills us in on his Twitch Channel. In this episode, we talked about some of the great advice JJ Johnston has shared with him to help build his brand, the podcast rise of Jesse and Jenna who just hit episode 100, and some of the challenges in running an online radio station.A reminder that if you find yourself out of work and want to keep the show going - both John and I are here to help.

Ep 158Genevieve Borne: Distinctly Quebecois

Genevieve Borne is really talented. I met her in 1992 after a concert and was enamoured with her immediately. She is a bridge to the province I love, and a broadcaster I respect and emulate where applicable. In short, I love this woman's tenacity and ability to say, "I'm going for it." In this episode you'll hear why Quebec is special, has the star system Canada has failed to replicate, and how her skills as a photographer, host, storyteller, radio host, model, personality and TV star has made her one of Quebec's most famous stars. She also opened up about her battle with Cancer a decade ago and reflects on how she handled it.I mentioned during the show that she is a very good Instagram Follow. And link to her Facebook page. Genevieve has a national radio show called A Travers Les Branches which connects the family tree of musicians every week. A radio concept that was always difficult to replicate in English commercial radio where its more about the playing the music than providing enlightening content.

Ep 157Terry O'Reilly: Under The Influence

Terry O'Reilly is a radio guy. He will tell you on the show that he is an ad guy - and that might be partially true. However, it is apparent that when you listen to his take on the world of media, advertising, marketing and radio, that he is grounded in radio. His show, Under the Influence, which grew from its previous incarnation of The Age of Persuasion (2006-2011) and O'Reilly on Advertising (2005). The show is now in its eighth season on CBC Radio and has expanded further into the podcast world.Terry and his wife Debbie, along with daughters Callie, Shea and Sidney work on the program year round to create some of the most amazing audio about marketing. The show has developed a loyal following from countless Canadians and listeners around the world. Here are some things in the show we learned:The show's idea came about over beers one day which involved Larry McInnis who was the creative director at CHUM in Toronto. As a complete aside, Larry is a graduate of Acadia University which is where I went to school. :)There is a Beatles reference in every show. That information lives on the Wikipedia page but Terry confirmed that he is a big fan and in his most recent episode spoke about how John Lennon was the best marketer amongst the Beatles.Terry is starting a company for podcasters... details will be announced soon but we were stoked that he announced that on our podcast. As we mentioned at the outset, Terry is a radio guy. When I asked him to come on the podcast he was aware of the show and had taken in a few episodes. High praise!Podcast aficionados will love hearing how Terry has embraced podcasting. The entire back catalogue of Under The Influence is now available in Podcast form. Connect to it here. Ep 156The Big Story's First Year

E

It sounds easy. Produce a compelling 15 to 20 minute piece of audio every day about a Canadian news story. And then you find out it isn't easy. For the last year, Jordan Heath-Rawlings has been doing just that with Frequency Network's flagship podcast, The Big Story. Mildly modelled after the NY Times' podcast, The Daily, the Big Story has shone the spotlight on Canadian stories ranging from the rat and transit problems in Toronto, to Canada's legalization of pot, and the inane plebiscite on keeping Winnipeg's Portage and Main. (Full Disclosure - I was the guest on that episode which you can listen to here)In this episode, you'll find out how the show came together, what decisions get made, and the forward planning that goes into each episode.Special thanks to Claire Brassard at the Frequency Network for providing audio for this episode.

Ep 155Bob Harris: Some Serious Fun

Bob Harris has had an incredible radio journey that has spanned Peterborough, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Hamilton. Along the way it has been about the people. He'll be the first to admit that he made mistakes along the way and learned on the job through the mentorship of General managers like Rob Braide, the late Gary Russell, Tom Peacock and Pat Holiday. Bob also worked with Canada's two biggest morning shows in Gerry Forbes in Calgary, and Terry Dimonte & Ted Bird in Montreal.Full disclosure, I applied for a job with Bob in Calgary in 1993 but didn't get the job. It all worked out as I got hired in Edmonton a year later at the same company and we worked reasonably closely on a number of rock related promotions. In 2004 we eventually got to work together at CHOM in Montreal which Bob will be the first to admit was a whole new way of programming radio. Finally, I asked bob about his battle with cancer and the amazing help he received along the way. Ep 154Is Radio Podcasting's Best Promo Ally?

This week, I want to give everyone something to think about. And that's the power of radio and what it might mean to podcasting. When Tom Webster released the Infinite Dial Canada 2019 study at Canadian Music Week, one slide caught my eye. Actually a number of slides did including weekly podcasting listening rising to 23% and monthly to 36%, but it was when he broke out the monthly podcast listening slide that I went, "Okayyyyyyyy....".And I wondered about it ever since. In this podcast episode, I explain the two contributions radio made to this result; one reason is because radio is offering a product that hasn't evolved, while the other is that it remains as powerful as ever when delivering a message. In fact - it is still the best way to advertise and get the word out about your brand.I also dive into the new Apple Podcast categories and wonder aloud what category this podcast should be in. A list of the new and now defunct podcast episodes can be found here. We also discuss the death of iTunes, and whether or not we should be charging for you to listen to this podcast. (Spoiler: It should remain free with ads, because we love our sponsors including Promosuite, nLogic and Core Image Studios.See what I did there? There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 153Big Rick Daniels: Evolving Terrestrially and Digitally

Big Rick Daniels grew up in Indiana. If you had to name famous people from the state, there's the obvious like John Mellencamp, the Jackson's and the sitting Vice President of the United States. Perhaps you are fan enough to mention David Letterman or David Lee Roth. But in broadcast circles, the state has a long a wonderful broadcast history that started with WOWO and set a standard emulated for decades to come. Rick was fortunate enough to work with a number of those people starting with Dave Kunkel at WRAY 1250AM in Princeton, Indiana. Also you'll hear all about WLBC in Muncie, Indiana and the brilliance of Steve Lindell. Steve had a way of training the listeners to refer to the region as "WLBC-land"; branding at its best.In this episode, you'll learn that market size really doesn't mean as much in this day and age. There is often better radio being done in competitive market #93 like Boise than in ... take your pick from the Top 50. You'll hear the 5 reasons why Rick made the move from Boise to Bowling Green, Kentucky, and how the old school values apply more than ever today. Rick is also very active on social media but admits that being first into the space isn't always best.First, please subscribe to his brand new You Tube channel which has some quick hits from people you know including former Denver Bronco Terrell Davis, and Joey Fatone.

Ep 152Kelly Alexander: Going Beyond Radio

Kelly Alexander is a team player, and great interviewer and knows her audience. It doesn't matter what radio station she is on, or what platform she is immersed with - she understands her audience and is the conduit between what is happening in the studio, and what is going on in her listeners lives. Not everyone is born with the super power of empathy but it also didn't hurt that she was a producer and call screener for some top rated radio shows at CJAD in Montreal and CFRB in Toronto. You can also hear how grateful she is as she has weathered the changes that come with new PD's wanting to take the station into a new direction, and the acknowledgement of some of the great people who helped her out along the way like Mike Bendixen, program director of CFRB, and Toby Goodfellow who was the technical operations manager at Standard Radio.Kelly is also a huge Janet Jackson fan, and we asked her what it was like to meet her! If we had remembered, we would have asked Kelly about her passion for Yoseikan Karate.

Ep 151Sammy Kohn: Radio, CD's, the 90's & The Watchmen

E

Sammy Kohn is the drummer for Canada's the Watchmen. He will contend that he is a realtor in the Greater Toronto Area, but so long as the Watchmen keep getting played on the radio and the band continues playing a few shows a year, he will be known first as the drummer of the Watchmen. Formed in Winnipeg in the late 80's, the band wrote, recorded, and released their first CD in 1992 called "McLaren Furnace Room", which was followed with a subsequent major label release two years later "In the Trees" and a decades worth of touring, writing, recording and working hard. That includes those early morning radio station appearances, often after finishing a show earlier that morning. In this episode, Sammy and I spoke about residing at opposite ends of the radio and records promotion wheel that was responsible for one of the most lucrative eras for Canadian Rock music. We covered some of the most 90's of things, (HMV, CD's) and Canadian pillars of the music industry like MuchMusic and the of Cancon regs which helped the band grow. I also come clean about not adding one of their most popular songs at the station I was at.This episode was recorded two weeks before the death of Deane Cameron, who had a large role in the band making a transition from Universal to EMI. When you hear Sam answer my question about that move - think of Deane.Sammy's podcast he co-hosts with Cam Gordon is the Completely Ignored Podcast. The Watchmen are on tour this summer and dates are here.Even more important, if you are in Toronto, June 19th there is a fundraiser at the Horseshoe Tavern in support of bassist Ken Tizzard's wife who is preparing for stem cell bone marrow treatment. The Event will be hosted by Dean Blundell who appeared on our podcast a few weeks ago.

Ep 150Canadian Radio: Let's Get Together

E

This week, Matt talks about his time at Canadian Music Week and after years of everyone staying mum on regulatory issues, there is a consensus that it's time to install the latest Radio update. Left unanswered is the who, how and when, but the why answers are transparent. Declining revenue, changing audio consumption habits and new players and platforms have left radio in a weakened position. The keynote speaker at Canadian Music Week was Radio Futurologist James Cridland who suggested that Canadian Radio get together and create a lobby group to represent their competitive needs.Matt speaks about how complacency has become the norm in his hometown and in Canadian radio, and is only betting on the latter to make changes. If you would like to read the highlights from James Cridland's keynote, Sharon Taylor assembled a nice summary. Her Notes from Day 1 of the Radio Active Summit. Her Notes from Day 2 of the Radio Active Summit. Finally, if Matt saw you at Canadian Music Week and invited you on the show, you can book yourself in here. Ep 149Nat & Drew: Once Fired To Be Hired

E

Yes it happened way back when. Nat & Drew were fired and then were hired as their own replacements. I've been dying to hear the story since the day it happened back in 2008. But there's so much more to the story in the conversation we had recorded from the QM 103.5 studios one Friday after their show. There's the story of how they first met and what Drew really thought of Nat. There's also the evolution of the show going from just them to being flanked by talent like Erin Davis (The West Coast Erin Davis) and producer Joey Arsenault who rigged up an iphone to bring the podcast into the studio. (Very McGyver) And how they survived countless station sales, swaps and mergers. They are still here - and better than ever. This episode marks the first time we have interviewed more than one person at a time. Ep 147Steve Anthony: The Boy In The Box

E

Steve Anthony retired from active broadcasting about a year ago, moved to Prince Edward County, and took his business ventures with him for the ride. He and a wife Tanya who has been riding shotgun with Steve since 1997, have enough stories for a book he says he will never write. I spoke to Steve about his early days at John Abbott College on Montreal's West Island, to his time at 980 CKGM and then down the 401 to work for Gary Slaight at Toronto's Q107. As I spoke to Steve, I learned a few things about the broadcaster that others had told me about. He is loyal, but never to a fault. And the number of other broadcasters he has mentored along the way. We spoke for an hour but we could have gone three. No there is no book in the future but he did hint and some other ventures that are coming. One name that came up during the show was that of Rob Braide. He also played a role in getting another MuchMusic VJ's career started, Erica Ehm. You can seem that video from Boom 97's 97 Seconds Series. Ep 146Ian Howarth: Rockin' Radio Days.

Ian Howarth taught in Montreal for many years, and one of his passions was radio. He knew one day he would want to write a book about all those wonderful moments and sounds that emanated from great radio stations like 1490 CFOX, 980 CKGM, and later CHOM 97.7 once AOR became a thing in the early 70's. In this episode you'll hear names like Dave Boxer, Charles P. Rodney Chandler. (Chuck Chandler) Marc "Mais Oui" Denis, Ralph Lockwood and many more.Buy the book here:Special Thanks to Marc "Mais Oui" Denis for keeping great Montreal radio memories alive. His fantastic page is here. We used a small clip in our podcast but there are many more to be enjoyed. We discussed things like the Beatles first appearance in Montreal which Ian later added:"The band had received threats based on the assumption that Ringo Starr was Jewish. There were also alleged bomb threats phoned in to a local radio station. Unfortunately, the Starr threats were the result of an anti-Semitic sentiment that still runs deep in this province (McGill faculty of medicine had Jewish applicant quotas, for example) and the boys were there for the beginning of what was called the Quiet Revolution, which evolved into a not-so-quiet revolution when the FLQ got up and running. The anger towards the Beatles would have been a part of the Amit-English sentiment going around at the time; the Queen, the language and in the case of the Beatles was all part of decades old anger to anything British, the colonizer, a word making a come back these days." Ep 145Alyssa Page on the End

Alyssa Page grew up in Connecticut, found her way on to the radio by doing everything. Then worked her ass off to get to Atlanta and then a dream position on the legendary 107.7 The End in Seattle. This podcast marks the third member of the radio station to appear on the podcast, and with good reason. The station is oft quoted as one other station's could look to for innovative and brilliant ideas. So what's it like to work there? Alyssa answered those questions along with sharing some of her interview strategies, show prep tactics and what she does when she is not on air. Alyssa and I met back in 2016 at the Conclave and every year she is a joy to see again. The excitement in her eyes was infectious as she told me she has just landed her dream job in Seattle, and in the subsequent years, had been elevated to the midday show. We spoke about the importance of networking, and what attending the Conclave has meant to her career. She also gives back by volunteering on the Conclave committee to put on a great event every year. Please consider joining her and a few others who have also appeared on this podcast June 19-21 in Minneapolis. Of note, our main sponsors Promosuite will also be there. CJ & Rachel will be demonstrating some of their new products and it would be very much appreciated if you can thank them for keeping this podcast free to you every week. Also check out the other podcasts about the End with program director Leslie Scott and morning show host Gregr.

Ep 144Paul Jacobs: Stop Selling Radio

In this episode we spend time discussing the challenges involved with selling at a radio station in this digital revolution. His solution is rather simple: Stop Selling Radio. We discuss best practices for implementing new sales strategies, focus on some radio stations doing this right, and get slightly controversial (or innovative?) when it comes to selling podcasts. Radio may be going about it all wrong. Definitely subscribe to the Jacob's Media Daily Blog. Paul will also be honoured at the 44th Conclave in Minneapolis this June when he will be receiving the coveted Rockwell Award. Paul will also be the keynote lunch speaker at the Western Association of Broadcasters in early June. Paul also spoke glowingly about Seattle's 107.7 The End. Ep 143I Am Irish Dave

I missed my first chance to meet Irish Dave. I wasn't going to miss my second. In the days after a Saint Patrick's Day that fell on a Sunday, I caught up with the U93 morning show host and learned a lot about the show host I have listened to on and off over the last 6 months. Now I knew that he was marrying his co-host Christine, but learned more about how they met.Originally, I connected with Dave on Twitter; likely chatting about radio. We failed to connect at the Conclave; in fact I had no idea he was there until.. Twitter. We finally got to have the conversation I wanted to have on this episode and we spoke about how he got to South Bend, Indiana, (home of the Fighting Irish) what radio in Ireland is like, and how do you do a morning show with your future wife? Oh and you need to be her boss too. As it turns out, there is a pretty good formula to it which includes the alarm ringing before 3am.

Ep 142How Very Meredith Geddes of Her

She answered the very first question I asked her correctly. She was supposed to get it wrong. How Very Meredith Geddes of her.Meredith Geddes arrived in Vancouver at the World Famous CFOX and pretty much everything changed. She'd never been out west before and was about to take a big step in her radio career. From evenings, the shifts began to fall her way; whether it was voice tracking a daypart in another part of the country, then co-hosting the afternoon show with Jeremy Baker, or interviewing one of the many bands that wander the hallways at CFOX. Then came an opportunity that was covered about a month ago with her current co-host, Kolter Bouchard. The pitch to collaborate with Kolter and co-host the afternoon show at 102.1 The Edge in Toronto. And while we heard Kolter's take on it a few weeks ago, Meredith was moving cross-country for this opportunity. In this episode, we talked about high school, the trials of working in a small market, arriving in Vancouver, techniques on interviewing bands and show prep, and just how much fun it is to work in radio - no matter what the format. Ep 141Corey Dylan: Undeniably Resilient

Corey Dylan understands resilience. The longtime Tampa Bay radio personality was let go from Cox owned WFLA in the summer of 2016. In that time since, she continued working her voiceover clients, hosted a few television shows, and tried her hand at podcasting. She also never gave up in her quest to get back into radio. That meant networking at conferences at a moment when funds were at a premium, and putting herself out there when it could be most uncomfortable. I was turned on to Corey's story from a blog post by Fred Jacob's from Jacob's media which spoke to Radio's resilience. Her career started at Washington State University and shifted to Bakersfield, California and later back to the Pacific Northwest where she produced the Robin & Maynard show. In time, she got a show of her own doing middays at Kiss 106 in Seattle, one of America's most competitive markets. In 2002, she moved to Tampa, and what followed was 17 years of morning radio, and engraining herself into a market she was originally unsure about. That all ended in the summer of 2016.She's back on air at Cumulus' Kicks 101.5 in Atlanta, thanks in part to her networking upkeep with the likes of Mike McVay and Brian Thomas from Cumulus. She also shared with me, an article called "The Secrets of Resilience" by Meg Jay, which appeared in the Wall Street Journal in 2017.Please share this episode with someone who you know is having a difficult time and is in between radio jobs.

Ep 140Tom Leykis: Blow Me Up Tom

E

Tom Leykis understands how radio works. He understands people and how they engage with radio. The Long Island kid who spent his first radio show playing Glen Pitney (and loathing it), became one of America's most renowned talk show hosts. He would go to war against other talk show hosts. He spoke in this podcast of the time that he challenged Neil Rodgers to a fight on the streets of Miami, and started off his shows stating that his show is the one, "not hosted by a right-wing wacko or a convicted felon". (The former referencing Rush Limbaugh, the latter G. Gordon Liddy who was rung up in that Watergate thing)In 2012, after radio ran into financial struggles stemming from debt, the arrival of social media, and dollars disappearing to digital, Tom started his own company called the New Normal Network. For years he would stream to his audience who had paid a subscription, proving that people were prepared to pay for premium content. Today you can now access his shows in podcast for with a few tiers of monthly subscriptions. (Also proving that you don't need Patreon to take 10% of your money if you can connect with people properly)We talked about the early days of his career, the demise of his relationship with radio, and I even snuck in a little baseball talk. As mentioned, he is a good follow on Twitter. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMegatraxFor a full transcript, go to https://www.soundoffpodcast.com/2019/03/04/tom-leykis-blow-me-up-tom and scroll to the bottom.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 139Dean Blundell 2.0

E

Dean Blundell was the host of the morning show on 102.1 the Edge in Toronto starting in 2001. As the internet age progressed, and social media took hold, the very things that elevated the Dean Blundell show to great heights became a part of its downfall. Add in some self-admitted flaws and it all came to an end in 2014. In the ensuing years, Dean worked mornings at 590 The Fan, but didn't appear to love the work. The last year and change has seen Dean take a look inward and clean up the mess from within and embrace change. Yes - this is Dean 2.0, and he is very excited for what lies ahead.Check out Dean's website, The Podcast, and Daren Millard's Podcast called the Chirp. If you are a content creator - his company is doing things including looking for collaborations. Ep 138A Very Kolter Bouchard Thing To Do

Kolter Bouchard was on the list to be on this podcast last summer. He had an interesting tale to tell about going from Dawson Creek to Dubai, and his program director Blair Bartrem was excited to get this talent on the air a Q107. Fast forward a few months and Corus renovates their airwaves and Kolter is now co-hosting the afternoon drive show on Edge 102 with Meredith Geddes. The story of how that show came to fruition is as every bit compelling as his journey from Dawson Creek to Dubai with his wife Dominque. It is also difficult to discuss Dubai without bringing up the late Tim Klassen who worked at Channel 4 in Dubai and became a fixture there. Ep 137Drex: Nothing To Lose

E

Drex became Canadian famous just before Christmas in 2012 when he asked then Premier Christy Clark on behalf of a listener if she was more MILF or Cougar. And with that started radio's era of internet outrage. That was not the first time Drex had been fired. He has a cool back story from his days on air in Australia, and hopscotched the British Columbia coast and interior before making his way to CFOX and then CKNW and the Corus Radio Network. One of things I love about Drex is his versatility from Rock to Talk to whatever format. He identifies it as radio and connection. He also takes chances, and admits when he is wrong. You can connect with his show's podcast here if staying up late is not your thing. Ep 136Buzz Knight: Healthy Paranoia

This episode is titled after Buzz's podcast called Healthy Paranoia. We spoke about his past in radio working at legendary stations like doing weekends at WNEW and programming legendary WZLX. From there we dove into radio's future, podcast strategy, why Beasley Media Group got involved with e-Sports, and defining innovation overall. His role at Beasley began evolving back in 2016 when Greater Media was sold to Beasley. If you are wondering where radio is going - this is a good listen. Also take the time to subscribe to his podcast which features conversations about leadership, innovation and change in fields that are associated with radio. There's also a 5 part interview with historian Doris Kerns Goodwin that I thoroughly enjoyed, and was played out in the type of room I imagined; surrounded by cozy chairs and a lot of books.Buzz touched on a few podcast initiatives at the company including Twisted Philly and Wrestling Inside the Ropes. Ep 135Sean Dilworth: Change Will Do You Good

E

Sean Dilworth is half the man he used to be. Figuratively only. In whole, he is stronger, smarter and more confident than ever. He made a life decision to get physically stronger, which led to a number of other changes in his life. Then he came out and told his audience about it last September. In this moment, I knew I wanted to have him tell the longer version of this story on the podcast. You can connect to that on air piece via his Facebook page. I hired Sean back in 2012 and he was every bit as eager, with a smile that's infectious and lights up a room. Back then he was heavier and a lot less confident. He was spending most of his energy hiding his anxiety for tasks that aren't easy for everyone; like bringing a band on stage for example. If I ran into Sean on the street - I probably wouldn't recognize him. He isn't afraid to keep the old pictures of himself on his social media accounts. In fact, he doesn't consider himself overtly millennial. And we even put him to a test.  It's no coincidence that this episode was released during the same week that Canada's biggest media company, Bell Media is having Let's Talk Day. Ep 134Troy McCallum: The Classic Hits Boom

E

Troy McCallum had it all figured out. He listened to the episode with Gruff Gushnowski and knew that doing the podcast in the car would be a fitting place to talk radio. After all, he spends up to 3 hours a day in the car listening to the radio on the way to work as program director at Boom 97.3 in Toronto. Troy and I spent about half of his commute home talking about his early days in radio, his affinity for the Classic Hits format, programming said format, and discussing two trips he took last year. One to Philadelphia where he had his first breath of podcast air at Podcast Movement 18, and a trip to New York where he got to meet the legendary Broadway Bill Lee at WCBS-FM.There's so much to learn about Troy and the roots of his creativity which stem from performance, to acting and then directing, to the collaborations of some Boom 97.3 mainstays like 97.3 Seconds and Behind the Vinyl. He also writes a lot of imaging, and has a good relationship with station voice Joe Cipriano, a must for any successful radio station.

Ep 131Jim JJ Johnston: Saluting His 365

JJ "Jim" Johnston did something rather extraordinary last year. He committed to writing a blog everyday saluting someone in the radio or music industry. In an era where the social media stratosphere is predominantly negative, The project started on January 1 with Bruce Barker, wound its way through Victoria Day weekend with a tribute to yours truly, and then concluded on December 31 with David Marsden. These posts were shared across all social media platforms including Facebook. When you think about it, it's a great idea so that can be shared and re-shared by everyone going forward.JJ is continuing his work with his company JJ-IMS, which has now reached its way into radio in Australia, and extended beyond radio into management groups and talent in other media. This episode should have you considering your blog strategy for 2019. Ep 130Yet Another Very Terry Christmas

E

They say three times makes it a tradition. Terry Dimonte loves Christmas and radio, so every year we have him on the show to talk about those two things... and more. We talked about our love of one of North America's most renowned restaurants Joe Beef, and his annual visit from the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. Terry mentions that his photographer Adam Scotti is a good Twitter follow. We also touch on he enjoys CBS Sunday morning, and still getting a hard copy of the newspaper. Terry also talked about the changes in his life with his new girlfriend Jessica, and we look forward to CHOM's 50th birthday this fall.I also served up one of the questions from this FYI Music News article I was featured in and we spent our remaining minutes talking about the lack of talent on the air these days. We believe it has hit some form of critical mass and believe radio companies are changing their approach. You'll hear the voice of Jacob Stoller at the tail end of this show; his podcast is called "Leafs on Deck" and it focuses on the Toronto Marlies.Merry Christmas to all!

Ep 129Ted Bird Talks

E

Ted Bird has been a Montreal radio mainstay since 1984. I'd say longer but I don't remember his fist tour in 1979 and he didn't have fond memories of that era which was complicated given the politics at the time. From his times working with Terry Dimonte at CHOM, Mix 96 and CJAD, to working off the island in the Mohawk community and now Jewel 106.7 in Hudson, Quebec.I worked with Ted a couple of times, including from 2002 to 2006 at CHOM where his passion for reporting, writing and broadcasting taught me to stand your ground while having all your i's dotted and t's crossed. Yes this will be as biographical as it is two radio people catching up as we touched on subjects like his support of the military troops, the legalization of cannabis, the Habs, Expos, NY Giants, and concussions in football. The Robert Hawkins bit Ted referred to is here.

Ep 128Danny Kingsbury: Don't Look Back

Danny Kingsbury is the National format director of Rock Radio for Rogers, and the first question is all about Rock Radio. In this episode we discussed his 30 plus years in radio, especially about his years at Q107 which were the last ones before the era of online streaming and the birth of digital. During the chat I was reminded about the success of Y95 in Hamilton which happened concurrently with his stint at Q, and that time the Leafs moved to FM and aired their games on Q107. As format lead for the rock stations, he led the initiative to rebrand all the rock stations to Gord-FM after the passing of the Tragically Hip's Good Downie. We also found time to talk about life, including his trip to Korea to the Olympics and how he has grown an appreciation for blogging. Check out his blog here. Ep 127Talent Coach Steve Reynolds

Steve Reynolds is a talent coach and works with some of the biggest radio talents in North America. He will help you establish what your show all about and get the show's characters connecting. And it is all done with the long term in mind. This is a show that is 18 months in the making as I missed Steve's session at the Conclave in 2017 because mine was scheduled adjacently, but I managed to connect with him last year and write furious notes. Here was the big takeaway from Steve regarding morning shows; he spoke about the acronym FAIR.Morning shows are Fun, Authentic, Innovative, Relatable. I'll note that James Berry was taking better notes than me he posted this on his blog regarding Steve's talk: You can read James' post here.Fun - Every successful morning show has fun characters, callers, features, and funny situations they get into. With all the negativity in the world, people are drawn to fun.Authentic - The audience's "BS Meter" is high. They're looking for real people to discuss real things in a real way. The old school, over the top fake voice and canned features are not genuine and do not register with an audience.Innovative - Every talent needs to try new things, create new content, and reach people with a bit of innovation.Relatable - Really know your core audience and the kind of things they care about. These things interest them. For example, if your target is a female in her 30s relatable topics may include family, food, fun, pop culture, health, beauty, etc.(courtesy James Berry Townsquare Media)If you are interested in working with Steve, shoot him an email here, [email protected] or check out the company website.

Ep 126The Buzz on Dave Reynolds

Dave (Buzz) Reynolds is someone I have crossed paths with twice. In the early 90's I met him when I was doing overnights at CHOM. The AM station down the hall was 990 Oldies. We were working for CHUM Ltd. at the time. Fast forward ten years and we found ourselves together at CHOM in Montreal, now owned by Standard Radio. We last saw one another around 2005 and through the wonders of Facebook, never bothered to call one another because - well are Facebook friends so that should be good enough, right? We spoke about his journey through the major markets, and the joy he found in Saint John, Campbell River and now Wingham. Radio is different in those markets when it comes to handling social media, and Dave has learned a lot and shared a lot. The 2016 Podcasting Hall of Fam inductee is also the host of a few podcasts including podcast411, Today In iOS, and The Feed which he co-hosts with fellow HoF inductee Elsie Escobar. Rob has built a reputation on trust in the industry by being honest: You're not going to make money right way, it is going to take time to grow your audience, and podcast is not as easy as it looks. Over his last 14 year in podcast, he has seen many podcast ventures come and go, and we discuss why some are durable, and others haven't been. This episode is great if you are considering getting into the podcast space, or are thinking about starting a podcast. There has been a lot going on in the podcast world, but Rob qualified that much of what is going on is the result of a lot of publications reporting transactions and news. Speaking of which - we also spoke about the launch earlier this week of Podcast Business Journal which is created by the people at Radio Ink. (If RadioInk is getting involved that should be an indication to anyone in radio where the business is headed, so sign up) Rob’s most recent contribution is here.We talked about the the impact of Spotify, Google, and what the Netflix of Podcasting looks like. Ep 124Mandatory Mandy James

Mandy James is the morning show host with Pat PT Thomas and Mike Dubs on Entercom's Buz'n @ 102.9 in Minneapolis. I've gotten to know Mandy over the last few years at the Conclave Summer Learning Conference. I watched as she bravely networked her way through the room in 2017, eventually giving me a gift bag complete with a Conclave survival kit which include a small bottle of something flavourful when 5pm kicked in. She also asked hard questions to industry leaders that needed answering as it pertains to what companies are doing about advancing females in the radio business. Coincidentally, Cox Media unveiled a corporate strategy to address that while we were recording the podcast. In this episode, we talked about he path from listening to WLOL 99-and-a-half as a child led to stints in Iowa, Wisconsin, Rockford, Illinois and now she's back in the Twin Cities. A lot of what we spoke about stems from our passion in attending the Conclave, so you will hear it come up more than once. Finally, how does she find the bravery to ask hard questions?Mandy was featured in two blogposts stemming from her question at Conclave 42. The original here. And a follow up here. Ep 123Amanda Logan: From A to Z103.5

Amanda Logan headed west in 2008 to Regina, Saskatchewan where she did evenings at 104.9 The Wolf. Amazingly, we still have audio from that era and it makes an appearance in this podcast. A few weeks ago, The evening personality at Toronto's Z103.5, got married and in lieu of a wedding present, I figured a podcast appearance would suffice. We talked about her journey west and then back east to the Big Smoke where she worked at Corus, CHUM-FM and now Evanov's flagship station Z103.5. She also was the 2013 winner of the Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year award in memory of Steve Young. The last few years have seen Amanda add teaching, voiceover, yin yoga, pugs and now a husband to the roster. (She is also the imaging voice of a number of radio stations across North America and podcasts around the world) Her Voiceover page is located here.

Ep 122The Very Speakable Nat Lauzon

Nat Lauzon has been a mainstay on Montreal radio for almost 20 years. Her career path has moved in somewhat tidy cycles, spending her teen years working on air in her hometown of Timmins, Ontario while in high school. Then she worked at Toronto's Mix 99.9 while she was finishing her degree at Ryerson Polytechnic. In 1999, she jumped at the opportunity to move to Montreal to with Blair Bartrem at Mix 96. She did mornings up until 2002 and then took over the midday show and was pretty much number 1 in the city for the rest of the decade. We also sounded like a retired couple talking about aches and pains and coping with what ails us. Although I didn't mention it in the show, I have some Tinnitus or some hearing loss as a result of a combination of skeet shooting, headphones, and rock concerts. Nat also has been coping with Vertigo and has posted some eye raising stuff. Some of the stories Nat and I touch on in this episode can be found in the show I did with Blair Bartrem in Episode 75. You can hear Nat weekends on Montreal's 92.5 the BEAT.Nat also has a voiceover company called Speakable and she is the voice of a number of TV ads, on hold systems, corporate ads, and often when you are on hold. She readily admits she records her first voice sessions of the day in her jammies, but she eventually gets dressed to walk the dogs.

Ep 121Osato Edokpayi: SoundCity Radio, Abuja

About 90 percent of this podcasts downloads come from two North American countries, Canada & the USA. But a look across the ocean shows the UK in a solid third with Australia and Nigeria tied for 4th, scoring higher than Ireland and New Zealand. I felt compelled to find out more about radio in Nigeria.EDK is Osato Edokpayi from Abuja, Nigeria. He does the breakfast show at SoundCity in Nigeria's capital. Over the past year, we have been seeing some consistent downloads from the African nation. It is apparent that Nigerian radio is does a lot of things well and has a number of the same challenges that North American stations do. I asked EDK to tell us a little bit about the radio business in Nigeria and spent a few more minutes finding out about that whole Nigerian Prince e-mail scam, some of the foods that he loves, and some of the sports rivalries in the country.I would also like to say hello to everyone at Inspiration FM in Lagos, whom I follow on Instagram. I love seeing your Instagram Live stories. Finally - I promised EDK that I would add the Jollaf rice recipe we spoke of to the show notes. Here's one I made. Ep 120Jenna Mosher's Ruthless Restructuring

E

In late August, Jesse and Jenna from Jump 106.9 in Ottawa were restructured out of their jobs. That's probably not news as it is a regular occurrence in radio. However, their replacements were a syndicated U.S. show out of Seattle. The ensuing online and media outrage was heavier than in other cities where layoffs happen. Jenna Mosher was kind enough to spend some time talking about her career which started in hometown Vancouver and moved to North Bay, Niagara, and then to Ottawa in 2014 when rock station 106.9 the Bear became Top 40 Jump.Since Jesse and Jenna's departure, they have started "Jesse and Jenna's Messy Podcast" with the help of fellow Ottawa radio personality John Mielke from Blast the Radio.

Ep 119Giving Thanks on Thanksgiving

I really love Thanksgiving. In Canada we celebrate it as a tribute to the bountiful harvest. There are a lot of people who enjoy it more than Christmas which gets lost in a sea of wrapping paper and Amazon deliveries. So in my turkey comatose, I offer up a word of thanks to those who support the show every week; and that ranges to anyone from a listener, to a sponsor, to simply sharing or following the social media accounts. I also provide insight into what it takes to make this podcast run every week, and answer a few questions that frequently come my way.If you would like to launch your podcast - I would love to work with you. Ep 118Being Graham Mosimann

E

Graham Mosimann does evenings at Calgary's alternative X92.9. I hired Graham back in 2014 to work at Power 97 in Winnipeg and decided to call him up and see how he was doing. It has been neat listening to his progress as a performer, and equally amazing watching his personal journey as he drops weight and makes life changes as he goes. As Graham tells me, he was a mess, became a bigger mess after he was fired from Power 97, and slowly began to get his life together shortly after. It's an honest conversation about doing the things you need to do to be your best on the air.He also tells us about his excitement working with Christian Hall who was the subject of an earlier episode.
