Ep 117Fred Jacobs: 35 Years of Jacobs Media

Fred Jacobs was a guest on Episode 53 in a preview to the Broadcasters Meet Podcasters sessions at Podcast Movement in 2017. I have always wanted to do an episode where we looked back at the evolution of his company and a tweet on the 35th anniversary of the company's creation reminded me that it's a good time to have that chat. We cover the creation of classic rock, his transition from the WRIF in Detroit to Jacobs Media, and his relationship to Buffalo where had a great success, a small failure, and a life long September 11th memory. We also talked a bunch about the discipline in writing a daily blog, the age of acceleration, the importance of non-radio conferences like the CES and Podcast Movement and the importance of networking, meeting people and attending cocktail parties.Resources:Subscribe the the Jacobs Media Blog - you won't regret it.The CES Webinar which was highly talked about at The ConclaveFred mentioned the name of Kashmir Birk whom he sat with on a panel, you can connect with his LinkedIn page here. Larry is known to many through his time at ESPN in Bristol, 710 ESPN in LA, KIRO in Seattle, or from his most recent home at CKNW in Vancouver. We spent our time talking about Corus' foray into the podcast space and how radio and podcast are beginning to intersect. He also gave us an inside look into how the show is put together and what equipment is used. The new podcast is called "When Life Gives You Parkinsons" and it is on CuriousCast, the new Corus Podcast Network. Ep 115Jason Barrett: Cheers to Three Years of Barrett Sports Media

Jason Barrett celebrated the third anniversary of Barrett Sports Media last week, and we have an annual podcast chat to talk about the state of Sports Radio. After three years of doing anything, you have entrenched yourself into the landscape well enough to speak reflectively, so I asked him about the trials and tribulations of shifting from programming radio to partnering with radio. He blogs, podcasts, works with sports radio brands across America, and I have admired his work and always appreciate the perspective he brings to the podcast when he comes on as the NFL Season gets underway. If you have time to listen to this podcast - make time for his as well as he has many of the thought leaders from radio industry on his show which comes out on a regular basis. Jason is also an avid wrestling fan; we did not get a chance to cover this on the podcast, but back in the 2000's he did a wrestling show that had more downloads than anything else at the station he was working at.  In this episode, we talk about the changes with Monday Night Football, Thursday Night Football, how Tony Romo did in his first year and how to deal with Kaepernick situation, when it unwittingly becomes a story.By the way, if you like what you hear and want to work with Jason, he is really good at working with your teams short term in advance of ratings or when the staff are all together. OR even better - send your staff to the Barrett Sports Radio Summit in Los Angeles in February. (e-mail Jason for more) There more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 114Matt Sutton Comes From the Land Down Under

E

Matt Sutton comes from Australia. There was a time when having people with funny accents was novelty. Then it became common place. With the advent of Youtube, Facebook and people consuming their media globally, it's not a thing anymore. In 2012, I had the delight of bringing Matt to Canada as we launched Fresh-FM in Winnipeg. The best part was bringing him over from Brisbane's B105 and introducing him to Canada... in February. There were subsequent promotions like "Make Matt a Winnipegger" and his "Lyrical Conversations" which still get talked about today. One thing that did come up a few times in this podcast, in the role that community played in his development, and the development of Australia's most successful morning duo, Hamish and Andy. It's something that is not as prominent in North American radio because of the sheer volume of stations. Matt is now the afternoon drive host at Z95.3 in Vancouver and he loves it more than he thought he would. But he's still loyal to the Winnipeg Jets and Blue Bombers. There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 113James Cridland: Radio Futurologist

James Cridland is a radio futurologist. He will tell you he got that name because he printed it on his business cards, but he does possess a keen eye to where radio is headed. He is the man behind Podnews, a daily e-news letter and companion 2 minute podcast delivered daily. He also heads up the Next Radio Conference which will be taking place in London on September 17. In this episode, James and I talked about the accelerated pace the podcast industry is moving at, Google's impact getting into the space, and how much is radio's future is tied to podcast. We also did a little podcast marketing 101, discussing some best (current) practices and what's it going to take for podcasting to be on level footing with radio. You know - the kind of thing that you would expect to hear from a radio futurologist on a podcast like this.Subscribe to Podnews Daily Newsletter https://podnews.net/Podnews Daily Audio Delivery https://pod.link/1325018583Next Radio Conference Information And the recent article James penned about Understanding Podcast Ratings. https://podnews.net/article/understanding-podcast-statisticsThere's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 112Jonathan West: Getting Down to Some Real Talk

E

Jonathan West is a passionate about a few things, including two of our favourites, hockey and radio. We eliminated all the hockey talk from the podcast but I will bring him back at some point on "The Other" podcast to chat it up in February when the playoff races take hold. It was good to catch up with Jonathan at the Conclave, and he mentioned he was going to be at Morning Show Bootcamp, so he promised me an update on that and I would pass along my Podcast Movement notes to him.Aside from being a talented radio personality, Jonathan is also a great hockey writer, which is where I first encountered his work. Californian born, southern raised and a hockey goalie. Quite the mixed bag. He's covered a lot of hockey and pointed out that 13 of the 14 outdoor NHL Classics have ended in losses for the home side. Sorry gang - this podcast is all radio and music. And we had some "real talk" about our business which says that it believes in talent, yet 4 in every 10 on air personality goes without an air check. We think that is unacceptable and if you don't get regular air checks, you can come to Canada where the health care is free - and the air checks are free. Ep 111Logan Anderson Says the Damn Score

Logan Anderson is the host of the Say the Damn Score Podcast. He loves being a sports broadcaster and found out that podcast was a great way to network and meet new people in his field. Guests have largely been the familiar voices that call games for places like Fresno State, South Dakota, Ball State, and Bradley. But there's also the Milwaukee Brewers and National icons like Bob Costas and Ian Eagle. It's more than just a podcast; his blog features lots of great insight and information like calling "buzzer beaters" (yes there is an art to it), and his thoughts on the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash. (Full disclosure: I did not know that he had written the blog piece before I asked him on the podcast)After exchanging phone calls every few months over the last few years, Logan and I met at the Conclave Summer Learning Conference in Minneapolis last month. Minny is now home for Logan and his family. If you have a sports opening at your station in the area - do not hesitate to call him up if you like what you hear. [email protected] this episode, we talk Conclave, Sports, our favourite play-by-play callers and what networking is like these days. There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 110Jonny Staub: Through the Out Door

E

Jonny Staub got his big break when James Stewart offered him a job at Calgary's top rated Power 107 shortly after we all calmed down from the Y2K problem. Jonny had some an incredible start to his career with big ratings at an early age at big radio stations in big markets. Then came a personal reality check. Which was later followed be the stresses of coming out publicly, and coping with the competitive nature of his work, and the support he gets from work. In this episode, you'll hear how Jonny handles the pressures associated with putting together a morning show at Virgin Radio 94.5 in Vancouver, one of North America's biggest markets. There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 109Ryan Wrecker: Overnight America

Ryan Wrecker hosts Overnight America on 1120AM KMOX in St. Louis. It has been the radio home of the St. Louis Cardinals since the mid 50's when Jack Buck became synonymous with both the team, and radio station across North America. Remember, the signal would carry for miles from Canada to Mexico, extolling the exemplary play of Bob Gibson, Ozzie Smith, Dizzy Dean an Stan Musial. I wanted to ask Ryan questions about what it is like to work after 10pm in a radio station. Is the coffee still awful at that hour?We talked a lot about talk radio in the age of Trump and how the late night audience is different from the yelling and screaming that goes on all day. After I ran out of questions, Ryan and I just geeked out about radio and had one of those organic conversations that just happens when radio people talk radio. There's more about this episode on our show page!

Sarah Burke has been the new girl at Sirius XM for about 18 months. After a decade at London, Ontario's heritage rock brand FM96, Sarah moved back to Toronto to work at Sirius XM's the Verge and later take on weekend duties at Indie 88. If you pay attention closely to this interview, you'll note that every time Sarah made a career shift, it was because she had mastered what she set out to. Sarah has one more to hill to climb in radio - I won't spoil what she says but let this podcast description serve as my letter of recommendation. We are at Podcast Movement this week. Ep 107Inside Dave Beasing

Dave Beasing is known for many things including a ten year run as program director at 100.3 the Sound in Los Angeles, (R.I.P.) as a broadcast consultant at Jacobs Media, and most recently as a part of the team that created the highly successful Inside Trader Joe's podcast. His company Sound That Brands has taken a lead role in creating branded content and I wanted to ask him about the branding behind audio; whether its a unique station like 100.3 the Sound, or a podcast about Trader Joe's.Of note, Dave is going to be moderating panels at the Conclave in Minneapolis this week (July 18-20), and Podcast Movement next week (July 23-26). There are Bonus episodes being released in conjunction with this episode. In this episode, I made mention to Dave having written a wonderful tribute piece about Nick Michaels which you can find here.https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/nick-michaels-taught-its-not-about-usThere's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 106Melz on the MIC: Living Local & Social

Melz on the MIC is the Assistant Program Director and midday host (12p-3p) at 103.1 Kiss FM in Killeen, Texas. Melz posted a picture of a newspaper article with the headline, "Local Man Gives Up Career to Pursue Job as a Radio DJ". After doing some listening, it was apparent that Melz had a lot more going on than just a local radio show. It is a multi-platform engagement online and on-air deployment in the community. And there's a whole lot more to the story including a tour in Iraq in 2003.His path to radio is unlike any other and I decided I couldn't wait to have this conversation over cocktails next week at the Conclave Summer Learning Conference. I wanted to get to know him now.In this episode you will find out that you can make a mark being hyper local and hyper social, provided you that you are engaging. It's just not enough to post and hope people like it. And that as a personality, you're always on and you should have something recording. There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 105Gruff Gushnowski: Nothing to Hide

Gruff Gushnowski has been living life openly and honestly for the last three and a half years. If you following him on social media, he can be uncomfortably candid about his postings, and he revealed in this week's show about how helpful it has been. We explored his radio career which has been set in Alberta for 25 years outside of a brief stint programming CHEZ 106 in Ottawa. There are other heritage rockers in their too like K97 in Edmonton and The Goat in Lloydminster, Alberta. (Given all the awards, accolades and talent that has passed through that station, I think we can give it iconic status) He worked his way up from announcer, to music director and the program director's chair. As the pressure mounted and the responsibility accumulated, so did his drinking. Until one day -- he stopped. Last November he started back at Newcap in his current position as Program Director for the Northern Alberta stations; overseeing radio stations in Lloydminster, Wainwright, Cold Lake, Bonnyville, St. Paul, Lac La Biche, Athabasca, Slave Lake, High Prairie, Whitecourt, Westlock, Edson & Hinton. Best of all for him, he has moved back to Lloydminster where he lay down some heavy roots in early part of the millenium. In this episode, Gruff holds nothing back. He and I even take a few moments to share tactics for alleviating depression. I am not a clinical psychologist, but I briefly play one on this podcast. If you do need help and are looking to make a life change, this is a great place to start. There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 104Jax Loves This Town

Jaclyn Irwin from Kiss 92.5 Toronto and Kiss 91.7 in Edmonton. She joins me to talk about her early influences in radio and growing up Dartmouth. Yes, we both agree that Dartmouth, N.S. gets a bad wrap for no apparent reason. We talked about what inspired her to go into radio, what it takes to be relevant in a market that houses 4 CHR radio stations, and how she has expanded her brand using social media. Jax recently went to London to cover the Royal Wedding for the Kiss branded stations and tells me what she loved about London. If you love this episode, you'll also love the episodes we have had with other Maritime folk like Ruby Carr, Dave Bannerman and JC Douglas. There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 103Will Sterrett: Building Rockcastle

Will Sterrett is the founder and owner of Rockcastle Media. The Kansas based network launched its first offering Think Fast! in May 2016 on just a handful of affiliates, including KWIX/Moberly, MO, where Sterrett was first heard twenty years prior. Think Fast! quickly grew as did the opportunities for Rockcastle Media Networks, with the following month’s syndication launch of Neon Beat with John Christopher. Since then, the network has grown to the point where it has offerings for every format in every daypart. Including the wildly successful Wilhite & Wall morning show which is now into its second year of syndication. To see if there is content for your radio station, check out the offerings here - https://rockcastlemedia.com/I first met Will at the Conclave in 2016 and he saw I was from Winnipeg and from there we have had ongoing discussions about the NHL's Central Division. (formerly the Norris) We continued those discussions right off the bat in this podcast, talked about radio, and then wrapped up with some soccer talk. It is World Cup Season ya know! Ruby Carr from Z95.3 in Vancouver is the winner of the Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year in memory of Steve Young. Runners up were Lauren Hunter 102.9 Sonic Edmonton, and Jax from Kiss 92.5 Toronto. Ruby's name came up briefly back in episode 74 where Dave Bannerman was talking about some of the great talent who had flowed through Nova Scotia Community College over the years. (Which also included Jax)We talked about Ruby's love for performing and found out her brother is also in Vancouver and also in radio working at 99.3 CFOX, and acknowledges some sibling rivalry. I also got to geek out a bit and talk about the Bachelor Franchise and how Ruby grew to love the show because it's a dumpster fire. This episode is sponsored by Promosuite Next. http://www.promosuite.com/soundoffThere's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 100Whatever Happened to Matt & Jake?

E

This is Episode 100.My years in radio taught me to celebrate the milestones and accomplishments. No more so than the time I spent at 100.3 the Bear in Edmonton. Some background on why I decided to do this show.Back in January when I was planning out the shows for the next few months, I wanted to have Greg Brown aka Jake Daniels on. He and I worked together on 100.3 the Bear in Edmonton from 1994 to 2002, working on the afternoon show for close to 5 years. I never had more fun on the air than I did with Jake. A few days after I made that shortlist for the forthcoming guests on the podcast, Jake posted on his Facebook page that his Lymphoma Cancer had returned and he was going to be starting chemotherapy again. On Valentine's Day, old friends from the station in Edmonton, Dave & Leesa Beeson started a Facebook group and GoFundMe campaign for Jake. That campaign formed the idea of putting this podcast together, and from then I committed to making Episode 100 about Jake Daniels and our time together on air at the Bear.Last year, 100.3 the Bear celebrated their 25th birthday. I often suggest that radio stations celebrating a significant birthday or anniversary create a podcast series to commemorate that history. That's kind of what episode 100 is about. A reunion of a radio show that ended 17 years ago with two radio friends who really enjoy one another's company.I could have just picked up the phone and called. But we did a podcast instead.By the way - this podcast is made more enjoyable because the of the people who took time to contribute to it. Thanks, Marty Forbes, Greg Diamond, Todd James, Terry Evans, Laura Fraser, Cubb Carson, Chris Maksylewicz, Ron Weslosky, Yukon Jack and Rob Vavrek... and Dave and Leesa Beeson whose idea became the inspiration for this podcast. Ep 99Randi Chase: Up and Down the Dial

E

Randi Chase epitomizes the lyric in the WKRP theme song, "Town to Town; Up and Down the Dial." The lyric conjures up images of jocks, successful or fired, who shuffle on to the next gig with a new town and call letters. Randi worked in 6 of Canada's top 10 markets before turning 30. After taking a year off to find out what happens when you take the radio out of Randi, she is back on air and having fun with in her favourite province with Vinnie Taylor on Newcap's Real Country 95.5.I had the chance to work with Randi in Montreal and never stopped following her career as it progressively took her west. Ep 98Brian Munz: Growing Up Humboldt

The Humboldt bus accident that claimed the lives' of 16 people on April 6, 2018 led to a worldwide outpouring of grief and support. In the hours after the crash, the lives of players, coaches, team support staff like a statistician and therapist were also lost; as well as Tyler Bieber who was the play-by-play host and worked at 107.5 Bolt-FM in Humboldt. Brian Munz grew up in Humboldt. I spent some time with him to talk about what calling Junior hockey is like and to find out more about the close relationships that are created on and off the ice between players and broadcasters.I also spoke with Don Scott from the Western Academy Broadcast College in Saskatoon. The broadcast school has created the Tyler Bieber Memorial Scholarship for students requiring financial aid in hopes of becoming apart of their great alumni; the likes of which from just the hockey side include Darren Dutchyshen (TSN), Peter Loubardias (FAN 960 Calgary), Brian Munz (TSN 1290 Winnipeg), Darren Dreger (TSN), and Daren Millard (Sportsnet). Western Academy is funding the ongoing yearly scholarship to provide a legacy to the memory of sports announcer Tyler Bieber and the 15 other Humboldt Bronco hockey team members and staff. Applications for the Scholarship are available on the WABC website at http://www.wabc.ca Two songs appear in the show: Tom Cochrane's BIG LEAGUE FOR HUMBOLDT © 2018 Sky Is Falling Inc., (Universal Music) and Jason Smith's HUMBOLDT STRONG (LEAVE A STICK BY THE DOOR).All ad revenue from this episode will be donated to the Tyler Bieber Memorial Scholarship at the Western Academy Broadcast College, so share it far and wide.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 97Gerry Forbes: Retired and Lovin' It!

E

When Gerry Forbes announced his retirement, you can forgive CJAY 92's competitors for letting out a silent cheer. For over 25 years in Calgary, Gerry's morning show has been in the top three in a market that is sharply country. In preparing this episode, I reached out to some of the people who had worked with and against Gerry. People like Bob Harris who was his program director throughout the 90's; Terry Dimonte who went up against him from 2008-2012; and Gerry's brother Marty who spent his career in Edmonton, and on the management side.I reached back and asked Gerry about some of the more memorable stunts that he conjured up, what makes Calgary so great, and how one listener would use the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council process against him. This episode is powered by Promosuite. http://www.promosuite.com/soundoffSpecial thank to our new sponsors (outside Canada):Radio Pepper Prep http://www.pepperprep.comAnd Aiden Wolf Voiceovers http://www.aidenwolf.caSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 96Sales Strategies with Scott Howard of WOWO

When Scott Howard made the change from on air to sales, he will be the first to tell you that he didn't get it right away. His first opportunity came at WMUZ in Detroit where he freely admitted that he made a lot of mistakes. Over time, he became more engrained in the sales world and started sharing his wisdom on a blog http://sclohonet.blogspot.ca/ and then in time on a podcast. Most episodes clocking in under 10 minutes. Scott currently works at one of America's oldest and most reknowned radio stations - 1190 AM WOWO Fort Wayne Indiana. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-genuine-scloho-media-marketing-podcast/id1223012914?mt=2&ls=1&ign-mpt=uo%3D4 I discovered Scott in an online forum called Radio Sales Cafe http://www.radiosalescafe.com. What sets Scott apart is his genuine approach to sales: Telling the truth and not being fake. Similar advice that programmers convey to on air talent. Ep 95Lauryn Schaffner Living the Rock & Roll Dream

E

Lauryn Schaffner is a writer, blogger, YouTuber, and overall lover of Rock music. On this week's show we ask how her passion for rock music took her down this path, and find out what role radio played in getting her there. Not surprisingly, radio did play a role. But not surprisingly, it was her parents who listened to the radio - not her. Ep 90Gregr and the Sound of Seattle

Gregr is the morning show host at 107.7 The End in Seattle. Last summer at the Podcast Movement, Gregr shared the stage at Jacob’s Media’s Broadcaster meet Podcaster series. At dinner he had the deer in the headlights look. Turns out he had just became a dad for the first time days earlier. Throughout dinner we shared radio and podcast stories. I couldn’t believe he had 4 podcasts on top of a morning radio show in Seattle. Now there were other people at dinner that night and we could have gone on forever talking podcast, radio and Seattle Sounders. So I told him we would finish the conversation on this podcast. What ensues is this conversation.Just a note that we did an episode about 107-7 the End’s #2MinutePromise and talked Millennials with the station’s program director Leslie Scott back in Episode 23. And again, in this show we will touch on the 2 minute promise and wonder why more stations don’t do it.The podcast is sponsored by Promosuite. E

Chantal Desjardins is a television and radio personality, stand-up comedian, voiceover actor and event host. Those are actually the words used in her bio and it's all accurate. She is often recognized locally as a radio personality, filling in on Virgin Radio Montreal; nationally as a former host of the venerable Hockey Night in Canada, and internationally as a comedian. In this episode, we talk a lot about moving from hometown Winnipeg to Montreal, writing comedy, her divorce, and how comedy entered her life. This episode is brought to you by Promosuite. Jean-Marie Heimrath became interested in podcast sometime in November 2016. He has always been fascinated by the business side of the entertainment industry he has worked in. Ep 77Alexa, Play the Episode with Steve Goldstein

With the arrival Amazon Smart Speaker products in Canada, I thought it would be a good time to speak with Steve Goldstein from Amplifi Media about what it means for radio stations. Indeed there is a race to secure names like Z100 and Mix 96, the same way we raced for URL's back in the 90's. The radio is back in the house, but so are a whole bunch of new audio competitors, including newspaper and podcast brands who are entering the world of audio. Ep 74Radio Professor Dave Bannerman

In this week's episode, we visit with Dave Bannerman, one of the richest sources of intel on Canadian radio in the twentieth century. He retired earlier this year from his role as radio-TV-journalism instructor at Nova Scotia Community College. We even take a walk down memory lane of an overnight radio show I hosted called "The Whine Line", and talk about the talent that has passed through his classroom. Dave Bannerman was the Program Manager of the station I worked at in 1989. (Yes, back then there was a Program Manager AND a Program Director) He was a great teacher of radio who allowed me to try out things that I thought might work. Some failed, some worked, and some stuff really worked. I was surprised when he made the transition to teaching radio at Nova Scotia Community College in 1995. But as I spoke to Dave, I realized that Dave had been a teacher all along; his curriculum had not changed since our days at Annapolis Valley Radio in Nova Scotia. He had turned out exceptional broadcasters by stressing a focus on the listener, never getting hung up on the digital technicalities, and doing what radio does best: Content Creation. The list of graduates reads like and a Pro-Bowl roster of Canadian radio:Fearless Fred - 102.1 The Edge (Toronto)Gillian Foote - 100.3 The Bear (Edmonton)Ruby Carr - Z95.3 (Vancouver) Jax - Kiss 92.5 (Toronto)R.S. Smooth (Ryan Sommers) CKDU 97.5 (Halifax)Christina Fitzgerald and Morgan Sheppard most recently of Indie 88 (Toronto)(I know there are many many others; these are the ones that I can recall in my head... please me and identify yourself as a graduate if you are in radio today. Ep 73Dave Wheeler Radios Without a Safety Net

E

Dave Wheeler is the morning host at 92 CITI-FM in Winnipeg. Along with Rena Jae and recent addition Dave Turnbull, they continue to be one of Winnipeg's top morning shows. I had the opportunity to work with Dave from 2006 to 2012 and really loved how he would create without a safety net: Not stopping the creative process to water down or negate an idea. Great ideas are refined and shared with the end game of making the listener laugh. I was invited out to Dave's newly built Safety Net Studios to catch up on life and talk about his accomplishments to date. We didn't hold back discussing the parts of his career that wound up making news. Notably his departure from Power 97, his former co-host Phil Aubrey's recent departure back to Power 97, and the online video incident from April 2016 - which led to the creation of Safety Net Studios. Ep 72Jeff Vidler's Podcast and Gen-X Insights

Jeff Vidler’s company Audience Insights teamed up with Jeff Ulster and conducted a deep dive n podcasting. The study was commissioned by the Globe & Mail. The study’s goal is to help podcasters develop content strategy, increase opportunities for monetization and create a road map for growing a young and diverse new audience. There were questions about the types of podcasts consumed, where they listen to them, demographics, and the most interesting stat – when they started consuming podcasts. I’ll spoil it now – 74% of respondents said it was within the last 3 years, and 41% in the last year. Numbers like that speak volumes to podcasting’s ascension. You can download the podcast study here: https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/b9f0d2_8411a2fefd7948399be55f1197f28a85.pdf Jeff will be appearing at the OAB Conference and offering insights on Generation X. This is an ample opportunity to take about the generation sandwiched between Boomers and Millennials. Now that they make up the 35-54 demographic, if they aren’t catered to now – they never will be. Finally, I wondered what a radio station called Gen X Radio would sound like. Ep 71Seth Resler On Launching a Geo-Local Podcast

Seth Resler has just released a new podcast called the D-Brief. He has experimented with everything from backstage podcasts at conferences, to travel podcasts, and finally realized that he really hated audio post-production, and that having your hard drives full of audio created creative clutter. The D-Brief is a Detroit-centric podcast that has little post production, and co-hosts with strong role definition. If that sounds like the characteristics of a morning show - that was the plan. If you are in radio and considering an idea for a podcast, Seth tells you that yes you can keep it local, and he shares his processes for launching the D-Brief. Yes - there were practice episodes involved. Seth also spoke about his podcast episode with talent coach Steve Reynolds at the World Wide Radio Summit. Ep 70Podcast Questions and Untold Stories by Charles Adler & Broadway Bill Lee

The Sound Off Studios are being renovated this week, so I took unloading some house keeping. Namely, I answer questions that I get asked a lot about podcasting. Can I make money podcasting? Should I do a podcast? How long should a podcast be? Also, I play two never before heard stories from two of our most popular episodes. Charles Adler recounts the story of how he almost became Terry Dimonte’s co-host at Whom in the late 80’s. Ep 68The DAZN Dzaster

E
