Terry DiMonte: Live from My Dining Room
bonusETerry DiMonte takes a break from taking a break from social media and joined me to talk about his summer live from my dining.room. Since his "retirement" from CHOM last May, he's enjoyed sleeping in and visiting with friends. I am very honoured to be his friends and a stop on the Winnipeg tour. Terry has long roots in Winnipeg that extend back to his days at 92 CITI-FM and working in the same building as the legendary Don Percy who acted as a mentor. We recorded this episode on the 4th anniversary of the passing of his friend Kenny Shields from Streetheart. Thanks to everyone who participated in the episode with Q&A's, and if you want to be apart of these in the future, just subscribe to the podcast page on YouTube and Facebook. You can see the video exchange here. Ep 263Lena Shulman: Where Shall We Begin?
EResearching for podcast episodes is different in the pandemic. I often have met the person long before I interview them. Perhaps we shared a coffee or drink, maybe we worked together or I saw them speak at a conference. Perhaps I grew up listening to them, worked in the same market or interviewed them for a job. The pandemic has turned some of episodes into radio Lava-Life dates. That's what happened with this episode with Lena Shulman from Vancouver's Jack-FM.In this episode, I spent a fair amount of time asking her the questions on her online profile, but the real gold was in the after dinner drinks where I found her her family emigrated from the former Soviet Union and later Israel on their way to Canada. As we spoke it was apparent that Lena also knew multiple languages. Her broadcast career started on campus at the University of Toronto where she was studying history. From there she opted for a producer position at Corus Radio Toronto and made her way across Canada to Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Niagara and then back to Vancouver's Jack 96.9 FM where she co-hosts the morning show with Drex and Bob Addison, aka No Fun Bobby.Lena made mention of a book by Roy Williams called Pendulum. You can order a copy of it here. You can find out more about Lena and see some of great stuff she is up to on our episode page. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 262Jessica Rhodes: Interview Connections 5 Years Later
Yes it has been five years since we had Jessica Rhodes from Interview connections on the podcast. Since then Jessica has grown the business to a six and now 7 figure business. How did she do it? Small steps and "grind and grit". In this episode I reconnect with Jessica , 5 years in between episodes and ask her about some of the business moves she has made like getting a physical office space, partnering with Margy Feldhuhn, and working with female business coaches like Kelly Roach and Ali Brown. Jessica also notes there's a difference between scaling to 7 figures as opposed to 8; it's a different set of strategies to get to 8.Both Jessica (president) and Margy (CEO) have their own podcasts. You can find Jessica's "Monetize the Mic" here - and Margy's "We Get It, Your Dad Died" here. There was so much I didn't know about building a company in the podcast space when I first started back in 2016, but simply following Jessica and paying attention to how she operates, I learned a lot. There are about 7 people who I follow like that. It's not unlike listening to your favourite radio performer to hear their show every day - and learn how they connect. If you are in radio and wondering why you should listen to the show:(1) Because Jessica got to the top by not worrying about the copy cat competition.(2) Because you don't have a podcast and should consider guesting on podcasts if you aren't going to podcast.(3) Even if you have a podcast, learning to be a guest will help you become a better interviewer.Follow Jessica and everyone at Interview Connections on the Facebook Group Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 261John Mamola: Programming For a Championship
John Mamola is the program director of WDAE, the sports station in Tampa Bay. We had him on the show back in December of 2019 and his life sounded busy. With the arrival of COVID, the sports world got turned upside down. For many stations, the arrival of COVID meant a decrease in workload - but not in Tampa Bay. The city really started to stir with arrival of Tom Brady in March of 2002. From that point on, the dynamic of the sports market began to change. Since then the baseball Rays have gone to the World Series, the NFL Buccaneers won the Super Bowl and the NHL Lightning have won two Stanley Cups in a 9 month period. Crazy. So how does the program director of a radio station with 7 sports properties cope? That's what we found out in this episode. I spoke to John about everything that has gone on since we last spoke in December 2019. A once passive sports market with a lot activity has gone into hyperdrive. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 260Stu Schwartz: Still The Stuntman
EThere are a lot of things that come to mind when you hear the name Stu Schwartz. The Ottawa morning host has been a radio staple in the market since the mid-90's, first making a name for himself as Stuntman Stu, then as a sports fixture on Team 1200 AND in-house announcer at the Ottawa Senators hockey games, and now overall radio powerhouse at Move 100. He's not ready to put himself in the category of the Max Keeping's and Ken "The General" Grant who ruled the broadcast airwaves in Ottawa in the 20th Century, but this century his is one of the first names that comes up when you say "radio" in Ottawa.Throughout the years, Stu has been able to build his following, one community appearance at a time. In 2016, he was diagnosed with cancer and talks about how being public about it has helped him channel strength. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 259Paige Neinaber: The Minister of Good Times
Paige Nienaber knows radio promotions and marketing. He's been involved with some really big ones - and one that I definitely remember because I saw it play out on CNN. (Wild's infamous Haircut on the Bridge). In this episode, I ask Paige all about what makes a radio promotion successful, and how they changed over the course of the pandemic. In this episode, you'll hear a conversation about radio promotions that I have been planning since I first met Paige in 2016. We discuss the anatomy of a great radio promotion and touch on a few of the famous ones that have taken place over the years, including Mancow Muller's Bay Bridge Haircut, and a lottery contest that didn't pass the legal test. One thing is evident: The same elements that made promotions successful in the 80's, still exist today. Paige also touched on the success of the Secret Sound contest which is on air now at 99.7 Now in San Francisco. If your station would like to bolster its promotions game, Reach out to Paige on this website. http://www.cpr-promotions.com/ or call him at +1 651 247 4056.Of note - this episode was recorded using Squadcast and this is the first episode with their new Dolby Voice feature. Ep 258Christian Zyp: Moving Radio
Christian Zyp is a host on Edmonton's CJSR's Moving Radio. But you're not listening to this episode for that. The story of our friendship begins on the radio in 1995 with the release of Van Halen's Balance CD. Back then radio stations were given advance copies and a "World Album Premiere". The special we ran only featured 9/11 songs on the CD. Where we the other two. Two drunk guys started calling me and asking why we had left two of the songs off and I said, "If you have some beer in the fridge I'll bring the CD over and we'll listen to it."What's a few brews between Van Halen fans? From there on, Garth Thatchuk and Christian Zyp became lifelong friends.Zyp started his radio career in 1998 as the host of the venerable Moving Radio on CJSR. But he is better known as a teacher, movie buff, music lover, soccer teammate, and overall great guy. The last time I saw him was in Edmonton in 2015. Life changed for him and his wife Trina 4 months later. You just skip over listening to the podcast and head straight to the blog page to read about Zyp's incredible story of battling back from the brink of death from contracting meningitis. This episode is dedicated to my good friend who reminds me to be thankful everyday and a reminder of the many ways radio creates friendships and bonds across the airwaves and beyond. Zyp and Trina are also responsible for kicking my ass and telling me to get going with a podcast back in November 2015.This episode does not have any discussion of breaks, bits, PPM numbers, digital anything, or workforce reductions. This is is the story community, friendship and gratitude. If you do get the chance, take the time to call someone you met along your radio journey, and see how they are doing. They would love to hear from you. Also check out Zyp's Facebook support group for ongoing updates. Ep 257Vinny Barrucco: Un Vrai Montrealais
Sometime back in 2008, Vinny Barrucco made the call to (then) Mix 96 to see if his skills acquired at community juggernaut K103 Kahnawake would translate into the Montreal mainstream. We know today that that answer is yes. The Montreal morning host has done most of the day parts on Montreal radio at the two of the biggest English FM's in the city, Virgin Radio and 92.5 The Beat. Today, he is a host on the former along with Shannon King and Adam Greenberg. In this episode, you will hear how Vinny nearly left Montreal on a few occasions, only to have circumstance keep home in his hometown. We also took the time to share our passion and love for Montreal and everything it has offer. Apologies if it gets a little inside with words such as "Dep", "Habs", "Bill 101", "Anglo", "Franco" and an in-depth discussion about how the Quebec star-system towers over Canada's. No apologies offered for the three or four times we randomly started talking about the Montreal Canadiens. (Bruins and Leafs fans might want to skip over this episode and listen in July)I had the chance to meet Vinny in 2019 where we chatted about the world of podcast and I really love how he started one with his wife Tina called, "Marriage in the Fast Lane", documenting their transition from single, to newlyweds, to parents. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Steve Goldstein: How Many Podcasts are there really?
bonusESteve Goldstein and I had a chat for this special bonus episode about how many podcasts there are. REALLY. Steve is the Founder/CEO of Amplifi Media, an audio innovation firm that offers counsel, production, and marketing of voice-first, podcast, and branded audio. Well-known as a thought leader in audio programming, marketing, and management, Steve often speaks about the future of audio at major conferences. He lends his extensive knowledge to the podcast, and illuminates some of the misconceptions about the number of podcasts that really do exist. Click here to watch the livestream of this episode. Ep 256Valerie Geller: Never Lose A Listener
EValerie Geller has inspired many to be better broadcasters through her work. Many of those lessons can be found in her 2011 book, Beyond Powerful Radio, the follow up to the 1996 work, Creating Powerful Radio. I would consider this podcast to be incomplete without an episode from Valerie. She is one of the most referenced persons in this series; not only from broadcasters, but now podcasters. In this episode, we discuss how her work has become more than about radio, and extends to anyone who is in a performance based industry. I asked her about one of the biggest mistakes podcasters make, how to make them better and what all personalities need to do to be successful long term. I also took a moment to ask about the changes in her life. Valerie is on the road for long periods of time, and that has obviously come to a temporary halt over the last year. We also spoke about the idea of "Never Lose A Listener" which, when you think about it, is a vital concept to podcasters who need to hold listeners from minute zero. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 255The Great Radio Reset
Matt goes solo this week with some ideas for the Great Radio Reset. With the pandemic coming to an end and radio stations looking to the future, we've assembled a list of things to think about. Some are some old ideas that should come to fruition, while others where born in the pandemic. As always your feedback is welcome. Here are the links that I promised to list in the episode:Pat Holiday's 2015 blog on live and local being overrated. Seth Resler's Hash Tag Scavenger Hunt.A transcription of the episode is in development and posted on the episode page. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 254Skye Pillsbury: Podcast Purist
Long before I even knew that Skye was friends with my super close cousin Kingman, I wanted to have her on the show. She was a guest with Sound Off Alum Jim Harold shortly after we all convened on Orlando for Podcast Movement int the before times of 2019. Somehow, I failed to meet Skye. I later received an intro through Kingman to connect and that was more than enough of a sign to do this episode. In this episode, you will hear about Skye's podcast journey which goes all the way back to Bay area radio in 1982 when the music scene exploded and stations like KQAK FM 99 would emit eclectic sounds in an MTV era. Skye as reminisces about listening to the radio in the car and hearing the production value that went into NPR programming. It wasn't until 2015 when she connected to audio through podcast; shows like Serial and Gimlet productions had her, and many Americans... hooked. You'll hear about her time in college, through Silicon Valley, her time as a publicist, and her podcast experiences on all sides of the microphone.Skye currently writes a newsletter called "The Squeeze" which you can subscribe to here. There is so much more about this episode on our website. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 253Sheri Lynch: Still In Control of the Show
EOne of our biggest podcast episodes was back in October of 2017 when we had Sheri Lynch on the show to talk about taking control of the Bob and Sheri Show. By control, that means retaining things like digital rights and having autonomy over your brand. The episode has remained popular over the years because of the number of radio people who have considered taking a similar jump. In fact, it is one of the episodes that I have recommended people listen to rather than me explaining what she stated so eloquently.Last month, The Bob and Sheri Show ended its run on flagship WLNK in Charlotte. In this episode, Sheri Lynch returns to talk about that departure and how the team has spent nearly 4 and a half years building a show that could withstand this. Sheri cuts through the BS and shares her opinion about how performers need to be thinking about the future and what they can do to lay the ground work for the next ten years of performing to the world.Great news! Bob And Sheri are back in Charlotte on K104.7! You can also hear them on great stations across America. You can also have them on your station in Canada. Ep 252Fred Jacobs' Tech Survey: Radio In The Year Of Covid
Tech Survey has been an annual study by Jacobs Media since 2005. But 2021 will be one for the ages. Completed during a pandemic, Tech Survey 2021 tells the radio story of what happened to our radio listeners when Work from home, Zoom, masks, no travel, and a politically charged internet took hold. Originally, this was going to be a discussion about radio one year into the pandemic but how much better is that discussion with data?In this episode, you'll learn how P1 radio listeners' habits changed in the pandemic, what in car listening looks like, and how the Consumer Electronic Show transpired online. Access all the information and slides here.We also talked about the challenges of writing a daily blog in the pandemic, and feel free to register for the daily blog when you register for the webinar. There's also a lot more to check out on the episode page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 251Dani Stover: Sunshine and Shade
EDani Stover has a wonderful studio with a beautiful sounding microphone and produces content for radio, and podcast. She's not the first unemployed creator to grace the podcast. Given the state of Canadian radio which is awaiting new regulations while dealing with the remnants of a pandemic economy, Dani is patiently testing the waters to rekindle her relationship with radio.I particular love this episode because Dani and I talk about the love affair we have with radio. Sometimes it's a mistress, sometimes it's a lover, sometimes it's your spouse... but now Dani is looking for a Sugar Daddy. You'll hear how one of her first job's in radio was working with the Dean Blundell show at the height of its popularity, what it was like on the show, and her time in Peterborough working with TJ Connors and Fred Patterson - both podcast alumni. We also talked about those Diva moments we all have; if you don't think you had any, it's because Dani has recognized hers. Dani also spoke about the limited roles in Canada right now for women, and what her future holds whether she stays in Toronto or moves to Los Angeles. We also spoke about her efforts with BlogTO and what it takes to create a daily podcast. (It takes an awful lot) and her time at Indie 88. If you are looking for someone to complete the role of on air personality and content creator for your station - you can reach Dani here. [email protected] also talked extensively about The Period PursePlease support our sponsors who make this show possible every week:Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 250Darryl Spring Talks To Bands
EDarryl Spring is passionate about rock radio. Although it started out with an attraction for what was coming out of the club shows of then CFNY-FM 102, Darryl knew radio was his future. From Loyalist College, to Q92 in Timmins, to Corus Radio in Toronto and Hamilton. His next two stops included Kingston and Ottawa, where there was great success, and some unfortunately timed circumstances. In this episode you will hear about all the fun that went on at these stations. And just like our episode with Bob Willette, Darryl was also told that the golden era of Edge 102 was before he arrived. You will also hear us reminisce about the late Martin Streek and Bobby Gale; both huge music fans. Darryl is now hosting the hit podcast "Darryl Talks To Bands" which is on all your favourite audio distribution centres. There's also more on the episode page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 249Tracy Johnson: Talent Coach and Consultant
Tracy Johnson is a talent coach I had the pleasure of working with him back in 2013. His ideas and perspectives always resonated with both the Rock and Hot AC talent I was working with. I recall the ideas benefited not a personality's development, but soon after station morale and inevitably the ratings. Tracy also makes himself available to all performers with ongoing seminars. In this episode you'll hear how this Nebreska native got his radio start calling baseball games, how he found his way to San Diego and how he managed to remain successful for so long in the market, why he left programming radio to exploring the digital side with Triton, and what radio needs to do to address its measurement issues. Personalities will really enjoy this episode as there are tips and tricks to reshape the way you look at yourself and approach your show. There's also a collection seminars on demand with some great resources. Thanks to Courtney Krebsbach for editing the episode. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 248Matt Cundill: There's No Episode to Hear Here
This week I spent some time looking out the window and thinking about a lot of the news that has been circulating in the radio business. Most of it worries me. People asking if Clubhouse is going to kill podcasting have it wrong - it stands to take the place of conversational and interactive talk radio. Other things I covered:Geddy Lee from Rush is not happy with Rogers simulcasting Blue Jays games this year.Entercom rebrands as Audecy; ditching Radio.com in the process. We are one year into the pandemic. Are you done with it yet?How are you using Clubhouse? The Sound Off Media Company celebrates our 6th birthday.Radio station cutbacks are weird. Do you say sorry or congrats? And do you say it to those you left or those who stayed? Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 247Joel Denver: All Access Dot Com
EJoel Denver is the owner, publisher and president of All Access.com. If you work in radio, broadcasting and now podcasting, you likely have visited the All Access dot com website for industry news. Way back once computers began to take up room on the desk at and internet speeds hit 56k, you might have gone searching for radio industry news and found mainstays like R&R behind a paywall and Billboard Online just recently launched. All Access has always been free, always online and stays connected with it's users with a free job board, music access and more. In short, it is worth parting with your contact information for All Access. In this episode, you will hear how Joel found his way to the intersection of radio, music and technology. We also spoke about the good and bad about pre-pandemic radio, and what it is going to take to get us all back together in the same room for a fun convention. I also mentioned that Joel is a fun Twitter follow - so give him a follow. Ep 246Humble And Fred: Fiercely Independent
EHumble and Fred are fiercely independent. They are the original "Life After Radio" personalities, having carved out a significant piece of the media pie for themselves. Back in 2011 they started a podcast and committed to it. (That's important component to their success BTW) They have had stints where they worked in radio for periods of time; including Kingston, Sirius XM for a superb 5 year run, and Funny 820AM in Hamilton up until last month. Through it all, Humble and Fred continue to produce a daily show live (streaming) and on demand. (podcast)In this episode, we will hear how Howard Glassman and Fred Patterson have built the ultimate "Life After Radio" show for themselves. And while they say they have quit radio once and for all, they do appreciate what it has to offer.... when it works for them. You will also hear how they manage the empire, keep the cash flowing and have fun every day. There's also more on our episode page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:MegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 245Shani Scott: The Queen of Some Media
Shani Scott is the owner of Media Room 360, a streaming and media distribution company out of Texas. Her company has been built largely through what she learned in radio. Inspired by listening to the legendary Tom Joyner on K104 in Dallas, Shani knew she was in it for the long haul. Believe it or not there are likely portions of our audience who don't know that Tom Joyner did mornings on K104 in Dallas and afternoons at WGCI in Chicago. Live. With flights both ways on Southwest Monday to Friday between the cities. It was that work ethic that was infused into Shani that led her to think community, while also having the knack to find the money. In this episode you will hear how she learned that working with both programming and sales can teach you valuable lessons in the years after radio. You'll also hear about her resilience in battling back from a stroke and breast cancer.Get to know Shani on her daily show with Melz on the Mic which is streamed in lots of places at 10am CT.Check out all the shows on Youtube. The company is really good at integrating with Twitch, Roku, Youtube, Facebook. If you would like to expand your streaming - get it touch with Shani, the Queen of Some Media. [email protected] is also really good at voiceover. There's so much more on the episode page including Shani's Ted Talk which will make you reconsider your approach to life. Ep 244Howard Kroeger: When Classic Hits Was Born
EHoward Kroeger was there in 2002 when a new radio format was launched in Winnipeg. The program director of Hot AC Q94.3 was apart of the programming team that had recently acquired AC Magic 99.9 from Standard Radio. It was obvious that Magic would no longer be an AC station, but what would it become in Winnipeg's competitive radio market? This is when BOB was born.Classic Hits is now in its 20th year as a radio format; straddling the divide between Boomer and Generation X - the original station is still on the air doing what it has always done with similar imaging and presentation to the original product - with some musical and presentational updates naturally. In this episode we speak to Howard about how the format came together, why Winnipeg was the place to make it happen, and how the format began to spread across North America. We also asked Howard about the other formats he has created including Duke and Hank.By the way, I also pulled out some recent audio from my conversation with "Bad Pete" Marier who was Bob's first morning host in 2002. Hear his story here. There's also a bunch more about the other stuff on our episode page, including the CTV report from 2005 about how the format grew across the continent. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We have to fail, recover and rebuild the same way that everyone else does, but with a bigger audience; more eyes are watching. The media (understandably) loves to promote certain topics along with a given day or month with a hashtag or annual celebration, and I'm certainly guilty of participating. While I'm launching during Women's History Month and excited to share a new episode on International Women's Day, I'm here to remind women to brag about their accomplishments all year long! It's no secret that we often don't feel like we should or can, but we MUST!”On each episode of the Women In Media podcast, guests reveal and discuss the obstacles and trials they have faced as they built their careers; the important lessons they have learned along the way and share helpful advice and insight for fellow women, trailblazers, entrepreneurs and more.Releasing new episodes every other Monday (beginning March 8th), the Women In Media podcast is accessible on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and everywhere you listen. Ep 243Bob Willette: Live From Bob's Basement
EBob Willette got his start in commercial radio working alongside Humble and Fred at 102.1 The Edge back in the late 90's. He started as an intern but later produced the show and followed them over to the Mix 99.9 in the 2000's. After Humble and Fred had this very strange separation, he was "excused" from his position as producer and went on to work at Proud-FM for nearly 9 years, serving as the program director for the planet's first commercially licensed radio station to serve the LGBTQ Community. This part alone is worth the listen as Bob talks fondly of the radio that was made and said he could easily write a book about it. There were further opportunities at 94.9 The Rock in Oshawa, Bell in Toronto and Kitchener, and now Corus radio in Kingston, Ontario. In this episode, I wanted to know how he continues to persevere in one of the world's most volatile business' which is adversely affect by a pandemic. I also wanted to hear all about "Bob's Basement" which is his new podcast. You can connect to the show below.Bob has teamed up with Toronto Mike for his podcast! Ep 242Lisa Guerrero: My Path To Being Brave
Lisa Guerrero has enough stories from her time at Fox and Monday Night Football to write a book. In fact, that is what she is doing right now. The award winning journalist for Inside Edition has a forthcoming book called Consider this interview to be a prelude to her forthcoming book about her life called Warrior: My Path to Being Brave. It will be released on January 24, 2023. In this episode, Lisa shares the high and low points of her time working in broadcasting; everything from a toxic environment at Fox Sports, to the abusive media criticism as a sideline reporter from Monday Night Football in 2003, where they changed the job description mid-flight. This is a very special episode for me as I have been a fan of Lisa's work dating back to the Best Damn Sports Show Period in the 90's.Today, many people encounter Lisa and her amazing Investigative journalism, whether it is on You Tube, Television or even Twitter where she doesn't hesitate to call out B.S. or remind us that leaving $10 or $20 behind for the house keeping staff after a hotel stay goes a long way to making lives better and being kind. There's lots more Lisa on our episode page. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:The CHR Prep Service - Click to get a free trial.nLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. For a full transcription, go here and scroll to the bottom.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 241Dahlia Kurtz: On A Mission
EFor Dahlia, it's more than broadcasting - it is now a mission. She is a social good advocate, talk show host, writer, producer, actress, polyglot, certified personal trainer, and even a professional ping-pong player. She is a woman of many talents. She has recently mainly works as a radio talk show host and has interviewed many famous people such as Oscar winners, Famous Comedians, and Nobel Peace Prize Winners. In this episode, you'll hear Dahlia talk about her experience in getting laid off from Bell Media. She shares the stories about how her show created social change, and the times it didn't. One of the biggest takeaways is how broadcasters fail to recognize the difference between local and locale. Dahlia discusses how she uses different social networks being Facebook and Twitter, and the politician's role in conducting change and how her show is a true fit for Terrestrial Radio. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 240Steve Goldstein: Amplifi Media
It's been over three years since we had Steve Goldstein from Amplifi Media on the show. He has an excellent feel for audio and how it is consumed, whether that is podcast, radio, streaming, voice or smart speakers. In particular, I have been fascinated with the advent of the smart speaker. Is it really a device that will save radio? Can it access those 1.8 million podcasts? How much of a game changer is it?In this episode, you'll hear how smart speakers have evolved since the sales explosion of Alexa and Google Home in 2017. You'll find out why podcasts have not found their way onto smart speakers, and how radio has made out with them in the pandemic. We also discuss the difficulties of starting a podcast that doesn't have a point of differentiation. It is always a joy to have Steve on the show to discuss the evolution of audio. There's always more on the episode page including the link to sign up for Steve's awesome Blogstein newsletter.

Ep 239Brooklyn Driediger: Virgin 94.5 Vancouver
Brooklyn Driediger is the midday and weekend host at Virgin 94.5 in Vancouver. She first caught my attention on social media... her feeds look so clean and the Reels so real. Her show is the same by the way. We spent a Sunday afternoon talking about her radio journey from the British Columbia Institute of Technology to Kelowna where she worked the cruiser, and then back to Vancouver where she worked her way to Virgin radio. In this episode, you'll find out how she wound up taking Radio and Broadcast at BCIT, her reservations about moving away, and what she learned from programming stalwarts like Bob Mills and Curtis Strange. We also got into discussions about the use of social media and why it's becoming more and more a mystery. Brooklyn also evaluated our instagram page which you should be following here. We also talked about thrift shopping and second hand purchases. I might have mentioned a consignment store in Winnipeg and Vancouver called So Over It. Ep 238Big Kris Bawden: 101.1 Big FM Barrie
EI met Big Kris way back in 2009. We had lunch at Earl's in Winnipeg. He was passing through and it was clear he was a rising talent in radio. A little over ten years later, we reconnected on this podcast to talk about all that has transpired in the 20 years he has been in radio. Most of it has been spent in Ontario with his most recent home at Corus' Big 101.1 in Barrie, just north of Toronto. In this episode, you will hear how Kris manages to balance radio, voice work, his comedy performances, podcast, and his new video venture. He also shares a number of secrets about his studio and how he built it. Ep 237Evan Degenhardt: 106.1 The Goat in Lloydminster Turns 20
Evan Degenhardt is the general manager and content director at 106.1 The Goat in Lloydminster. To be honest, we are not sure if it's Alberta, or Saskatchewan or both, but we do know that over the last twenty years the station has seen a lot of high end radio talent pass through its hallways and fill the airwaves with awesome radio. For a list of just the people we know, check out our episode page.In this episode you'll hear how Vista Radio is handling the anniversary in the face of the pandemic, and some stories on the radio station's history. There is also some bonus material on the episode page, including some thoughts from the station's first program director, Ryan Zimmerman. If you worked at 106.1 The Goat at any time - feel free to send Evan some audio about your time there. 30 seconds will do. Ep 236Jesse Tieman: Country 93.5 Kingston
EI loved my chat with Jesse Tieman from Kingston's Country 93.5. He does the morning show with Leanne Cater, "The Boss Lady and Jesse". I assumed that I would be talking with someone who grew up in Montreal. You see, his dad was the legendary sportscaster Randy Tieman from CFCF, but I didn't know that his late father commuted daily from Lancaster, Ontario. It was also exciting to discover we had a mutual admiration for the poutine in the area, and the joys of growing up at the local hockey rink.In this episode, you'll hear what it is like to grow up in a broadcast household, what he learned from his dad and his adventures moving from eastern Ontario, to Alberta; including his stint at the legendary Goat in Lloydminster. In a completely unrelated note - if you are alumni of that station, please contact Evan them about their 20th anniversary. Ep 234The Fifth Very Terry Christmas
EFor the last five years, Matt and Terry Dimonte have gotten together for a podcast chat around Christmas time. Terry loves Christmas and its a chance to talk about radio and a whole lot more. This year we ask Terry about some of his long time friendships he has had over the years. This partially dovetails from our previous episode featuring Vanessa Newman, whose father was one of Terry's best friends. He tells the story of how they became friends. I also ask Terry about his years in the restaurant business and what he learned.

Ep 233Vanessa Newman: Z95.3 Vancouver
Vanessa Newman is the afternoon host at Z95.3 in Vancouver. She is a recipient of the British Columbia Broadcasters Performer of Tomorrow. Her radio journey starts in the late 90’s spending summers in Montreal with her Uncle Terry Dimonte from then Mix 96 and later CJAD. In this episode, Vanessa and I meet for the first time, after a collection of near misses. We will hear how she shied away from the radio limelight but later found her way into promotions and eventually on the air.You can connect with our two past episodes that we did with Sutton here and here.

Ep 232Jeff Vidler: The Canadian Podcast Listener 2020
Jeff Vidler makes his third appearance on the podcast to talk about the Canadian Podcast listener study which does an annual deep dive into the progress and behaviour of podcast listeners in Canada. Over the last year, over 4600 people have contributed their study which brings together advertising insights and podcast listening trends. This is the 4th edition and Jeff has taken the time to tell us about what's new in Canadian Podcast listening. In this episode, you'll hear why Spotify has become so popular, what the business of podcast advertising looks like these days, and what effect the pandemic has had on podcast listening. Ep 231Drex: Lowering DREXpecations
It's been a long year. Humanity has spent nine months in a pandemic and six of them without Drex on the radio. He left his position at Corus last June where he did a late night talk show across the country. He is now the morning host at Jack 96.9 in Vancouver along with Lena Schulman and No Fun Bob. In this episode, we spend 45 minutes on a livestream on our Youtube page. (Please subscribe) Drex talks about the challenges of the pandemic, including keeping his mental health on the level and going through a break up while pivoting from evening to morning radio, and AM talk to FM music. Drex is one of the good ones in radio and it is great to have him back on the radio. The show goes 5-9am Pacific and to listen, just ask Alexa to play "Jack 96.9 Vancouver" - worked for me this morning.

Ep 230Sue Tyler: Humour, Sexuality, Equality
ESue Tyler is the afternoon host on Power 104 in Kelowna, British Columbia. Recently I saw her streaming on Twitch and was reminded that I really I need to hear the whole story. Sue has been on the radio for over thirty years. Like many of us who embark on the radio journey, we have our goals set on a destination or an end place. Sue Tyler is the afternoon drive host at power 104 in Kelowna, British Columbia. how she got there is culmination of life decisions, survival, wherewithal, and circumstances combined with the talent of understanding and connecting with people. Sue now has a Twitch channel which you can find here.In this episode, you'll hear about Sue's start in Ottawa and her passages through Peterborough, Toronto, and eventually Kelowna. Sue is also very good on the phones and shares some of the secret sauce in getting people to call in. She has also reached out to consultants like Lee Abrams and John Parikhal as she looks to connecting to listeners in the future.

Ep 229Erica Ehm: Reinvention of a VJ
EIt's safe to say that Growing up Much is something millennials and Gen Xers have in common. Erica Ehm was one of the first batch of VJs to grace Canadian airwaves back when MuchMusic launched in 1984. Her broadcast journey actually began in Montreal in the late 70's when she entered her College into a contest on CHOM-FM to have Max Webster play in the Marianapolis Cafeteria. While her school did not win the contest, Erica did score a job in the CHOM-FM music library, and work and Broadway Live as a DJ where Suggs from Madness crashed on her family's sofa, she saw the GoGo's perform, and Bono told her to go into P.R.In this episode, we talk to Erica Ehm about her journey to MuchMusic, through MuchMusic, and all the creative projects that came after including television, stage productions and songwriting. Did you know Erica has won multiple Junos and Canadian Country Music Awards? Exactly! That's why you need to hear how Erica evolved. And guess what is next? Ep 228Jeremy White: No Place Like Home
EJeremy White works evenings and weekends at the Beat 92.5 in Montreal. He got his start in community radio at K103 in Kahnawake in the Mohawk Territory just off the island of Montreal. The radio station played a key role in the 1990 Oka Crisis which exposed Canada's fractured relationship was its First People. Jeremy shared some family stories from that era, along with growing up with the station, and listening to the incredible talent on CHOM, and Mix 96 like Cat Spencer, Terry Dimonte, Kim Rossi, and Ted Bird.In this episode, Jeremy opens up and life in Kahnawake, starting at age 15 at K-103, and then getting hired by Leo D'Estrella at Q92 which evolved into the Beat. We also discuss Jeremy's online presence and his interviews with some prominent music stars like John Oates, David Guetta, and Rob Halford. He also talks a bout his time in Edmonton at Virgin 104.9 which he readily admits was not his favourite move. In fact, moving overall seems overrated these days unless it's to Z100 or something in a large metropolis. We also flashed back to Ted Bird's episode and you can hear that here in its entirety.

Ep 227Tony Coles: Mentorship, Pivoting and Gratitude
iHeart Media's Tony Coles was not immediately drawn to radio. It came later after he was let go from a radio job and competing program director, the late Dave Robbins showed compassion and reached out. Tony will tell the story in the show better than I can write it, but it was clear that Tony could relate to Dave's compassion, recognition and empathy for "those moments" in radio. I have had the chance to meet Tony on a few occasions and if you want to get better as a programmer, or air talent, follow him.In this episode, you will hear about a few of his early stops in radio, the decision to pivot to programming, working with talent, finding new talent for radio in 2020, and the assembly of the Black Information Network which launched earlier this year. The network was built in the pandemic for 2020 consumption. You can stream it from the website, or the iHeart Media app. (And good news Canada, yes you can listen to it too) Finally, we wrapped the episode up with a few thoughts about Thanksgiving. Tony loves Thanksgiving and I wanted to have him on in between both Canadian and U.S. Thanksgiving to talk about what he loves about it.(Full disclosure, I have been celebrating both for years)There is more about BIN and its personalities on our show page. Ep 226Bryan Barletta: Ad Tech 101
When I started this podcast in 2016, it was as simple as uploading audio to Soundcloud. Then I saw what tech offered and I was hooked. Dynamic ad insertion opened up a world of possibilities as we could increase our ad inventory by selling spots tailored to regions. Ad tech has come a long way in the last few years, and I reached out to Bryan Barletta to give me a crash course in ad tech. He helps companies at their formative stages build up and effectively execute on their solutions in mobile rich media, digital/podcast attribution, and podcast monetization & data infrastructure. On the heels of me Sounding Off about radio diaries, some ideas about how to count and monetize your audio.Sign up for Bryan's newsletter here.Bryan also referenced his latest work which you can find here. Ep 225Death of the Diary
ELast week on the Broadcast Dialogue: The Podcast, I was listening to Numeris CEO Neil McEneaney provide an annual update. I had to stop listening when he expressed confidence in the TV paper diary method for gathering listening consumption. This is 2020, but the exit plan for the paper diary should have started back in 2007 when the decision to bring PPM to Canada was made. No, I am not advocating for PPM in Kelowna, but radio and advertisers should have been on lookout for a comparable measurement system. Fast forward to 2020 and we are hanging on to this archaic methodology. The pandemic has expedited so much including the inevitable death of the diary. In this episode I sound off about how radio got here and what we should do next.I don't carry a donate button but if you find any of this useful, please send me what you can and I'll send you an invoice for a 9 minute consult.

Ep 224Tony Lorino: Throwback Nation
Things got a little weird at a conference a few years ago. There was a Michael Jackson impersonator, then the next conference it was Prince, then Madonna.... what was going on? Turns out those impersonators were a stunt by the people at Throwback Nation, a newly created syndicated show that was going to be targeting Classic hits stations across America. The former Entercom PD of great radio stations like Star 94.1 in Atlanta, and 99.7 the Point in Kansas had worked his way up through Go Radio and Saga working on air and in the programming department. (Yes we even get a little nerdy discussing music systems)In this episode, you will hear all about Tony's career path through the midwest and eventually down to Atlanta. And then came the moment when he jumped out of radio and being an entrepreneur. Throwback Nation airs nightly across America. If your station would like a piece of the action, you can call Tony at 414-841-3243.Follow TB Nation on FacebookFollow TB Nation on TwitterFollow TB Nation on InstagramAlso we had Chris Cruise on a few weeks ago and he is the host of Throwback Nation 2K which will be launching in the new year.

Ep 223Corey Tremere: P.E.I. Corey
I always have a strong sense about what's going on in P.E.I. Every morning I wake up and Corey Tremere's twitter account has all the latest from Prince Edward Island flowing. I'm two hours behind in the central time zone, so his midday show is my morning show. Ocean 100 has been the Island's #1 commercial radio station since it went on the air in 1974 at the 1190AM position. It then got a new address at 720AM in 1987, and a new frequency at Ocean 100.3FM in 2006. There's something wonderful about working at the radio station you grew up to, and Corey tells the story of how he started working in radio in Junior High, and worked his way up.In this episode, you will hear our very first guest from Prince Edward Island talk about how Canada's smallest province is coping with the pandemic, what lies ahead for radio in the future, and how the approach of local and social continues to pay off in the era of the smart phone.I might have mentioned that Corey is a great twitter follow. Also check out the episode page to find out more on Corey, and more on PEI on the Episode page, including an interview with Prime Minister Trudeau from November 2017.There's more about this episode on our show page!

Ep 222Chris Cruise: Throwback Nation 2k
EChris Cruise never had a radio career; he's always been a content creator. The Detroit native was let go from Entercom's Amp Radio 98.7 and attempted the sales thing before returning to his roots as a teacher at Chris can be heard on a number of station's across America already, but you're about to hear a lot more of him with the launch of Throwback Nation 2K in January. The original classic hits juggernaut Throwback Nation is a the creation of Tony Lorino, and will now branch out in the next millenium with the music millennials grew up with. (Yes I had to ask - that's Brittany, NSync, Soul Decision. In this episode, you will hear about Chris' radio journey through great radio markets like Fort Wayne, Indiana and Boise, Idaho. The social media strategies that made him an industry leader, and what's ahead for his YouTube Channel and Throwback Nation 2K which launches in January.I referenced other podcast episodes about these markets. I am thinking specifically about the one with Big Rick Daniels who spent some time in Boise, and Scott Howard who continues to sell at WOWO in Fort Wayne, Indiana. As promised, here are the connection points if you want to have Throwback Nation or Throwback Nation 2K on your radio station. Also subscribe to Chris' You Tube channel for video suggestions. Ep 221Paul Kaye: Radio No Longer A Walk in the Park
Paul Kaye is the VP of Music Brands and In House Production at Rogers. When he was hired in July of 2017, it was mentioned that his position is an evolving one. True to that statement - his position remains as fluid as ever given the accelerating change for the medium and for the content creators who work in it. The last time we had Paul on the show, it was December 2016 and he was fulfilling a role at Newcap Radio. We haven't felt the need to have him back because the episode was very evergreen and stood the test of time resiliently. However, with the pandemic - it is time for a catch up.In this episode, we spoke about the differences between "Big Bits" and "Conversational". (Spoiler: The former is passe) We also debunked some of the truths and myths surrounding live and local, and how the pandemic will result in better radio content quality, even if the economic indictors do not reflect that right now. We also talked about the future of morning radio citing two recent changes in the Winnipeg market with the bringing Brock and Dalby to afternoons on 92.1 CITI, and transplanting Roz and Mocha into the morning show on 102.3 Kiss FM. Both are glimpses into the future for radio talent... and yes they should be excited about the possibilities. And yes we did discuss what he looks for in demo. I'll even let you cut right to that part but you really shouldn't because there is so much other great stuff you'll likely need to know from the episode before you send him an mp3 or .mov of your work.[13:40] What goes into a great demoThere's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week.PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 220Kevin Getz On My Podcast
Kevin Getz is the swing announcer at 102.1 The Edge in Toronto. He recently came out with a brand new album. What makes the album unique is that it is a spoken word album full of his radio breaks. The collection of audio is an attempt to make his audio more durable, sustainable, marketable, and less disposable. In this episode, Kevin and I talked a lot about how breaks are put together, but what happens after that break is aired. He admits he is a hoarder and that he keeps everything he airs on hard drives. By keeping all his audio, he finds there are different moments for different pieces of audio. It's also a great opportunity to be self-checking your work. We also discussed show prep and the uncomfortable subject of digital rights. This was where I used the audio super power of reaching for a past piece of audio which has context for this episode. No one has done a better job of explaining digital rights to performers than Sheri Lynch. Our episode with her in 2017 was epic.To buy Kevin's Album - go here. Net proceeds go to Thank Dog I am Out. Ep 219Lili Wexu: Hear That Voice Again
Lili Wexu is a voice actress based in Los Angeles but started in Montreal. You might say this is all Howard Stern's fault. Back in the late 90's Howard Stern was syndicated to Q107 in Toronto and CHOM in Montreal. The result for the former was a failed venture, the latter was a near disaster. CHOM's longtime competitor at the time was Mix 96, who courted disenfranchised francophones to their station but using Lili as imaging talent. Rob Braide was general manager at Mix 96 and had been apart of a bilingual era at CHOM in the 70's where French and English co-existed in harmony on one frequency. Ep 218Maureen Holloway With the Last Word
I never realized how lucky I was to work alongside Maureen Holloway - until I no longer did. Mo is now the morning host with Darren B. Lamb on 98.1 CHFI in Toronto. Maureen is brutally honest about her career, her family, her relationships and her 2005 battle with cancer. I was working in Montreal at the time and she was quite open with the Mix 96 audience at the time. I did not know that she had not shared that with the rest of the radio affiliates outside of Montreal and Toronto. In this episode, Maureen and I grapple with what we could get away at the turn of the millenium and the unforgiving nature of cancel culture. That includes this episodes where we might have cracked a few jokes between us that would hold up well in this day and age. We also got into the silliness of gender reveal parties, not getting her name on the show marquee until later into her career, and some career advice for those coming up in radio. Practice fearlessness and get into what the late John Lewis described as "Good Trouble". Maureen is also the originator of working from home (the Last Word was done from her home studio) but she misses the camaraderie of working together with other creatives. Ep 217More Talk, Less Rock
Matt is on the road in Quebec this week and explains that the spoken word has more than than music to radio programmers. Canadian radio regulations need to be reviewed and instead of focusing on Cancon for music - maybe the CRTC should be focusing on regulating who is doing the talking and from where. In this episode, we made mention of Kevin Getz's from 102.1 the Edge. He just releases an album where he monetizes his audio content. You can buy it on Apple Music, Amazon and Google Play. Thanks to our sponsors Matt Fogarty Voiceovers, Core Image Studios and Promosuite for your continued support of the show. There's more about this episode on our show page!
