Ep 360Radio's Summer of Discontent

Coming off the heels of a positive vibe at Radio Days North America, the radio landscape is flooded with bad news regarding 1300 layoffs, 6 Canadian AM radio stations being closed down entirely, Canada's Bill C-18 leading to the throttling or complete shutdown of news on Google and Facebook respectively, Bell asking the CRTC to reduce its local promise of performance and the launch of Futuri Media's Radio GPT on Portland's KBFF leading to some inner-industry outcry. Matt Cundill once again has some thoughts on all of it.In this episode you will hear Matt talk about the buzz around AI Ashley, the new rules for talent to negotiate their contracts with radio stations, he deciphers how we got here, and then unpacks as much as possible with Bill C-18 and Facebook blocking news in Canada. Matt also suggests that if Canada really wanted to take a stand, they would simply tax digital advertising to foreign entities.A Transcription of this episode is available here. This show is made possible every week by contributors like:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 359Kattie Laur: Pod The North

E

On this week's edition of "Producers Interviewing Producers," we've got Kattie Laur, a podcast producer from the Toronto area. But she's more than just that. In fact, the main subject of this episode is her newsletter, Pod The North.Pod The North is designed around the idea of creating a community for Canadian podcasters, since in all her years of working with audio, she noticed there wasn't really a space or a resource for us Canucks to come together and talk about podcast stuff. So what could she do, but create one herself? She also works freelance for Canadaland, as well as AM640 radio in Toronto. We speak with Kattie about all these things, before getting into a hefty discussion about Bill C-11 and whether or not we think it'll actually lead to a positive change in the Canadian media space (Spoiler alert: we're doubtful). For more of Kattie, check out her website or follow her on Twitter or LinkedIn. And if you haven't already, definitely join the Pod The North newsletter on Substack. You won't regret it.A Transcription of this episode is available here.

Ep 358Charles Adler Returns... (Again)

E

This week, we're back with another old friend of the show. Charles Adler was last on in 2019, and at the time, he was about to be on-air with Corus Radio. Nowadays, he's joining the ever-growing list of radio vets who have decided to go digital.Charles is starting up his own podcast, The Charles Adler Show, in just a few weeks. We know this, not just because he told us, but because The Sound Off Media Company is going to be handling the production side for him. We won't be hosting the show, though. Instead, you can find him on Dean Blundell's network, Crier Media, once the show goes live.As usual with radio-stars-turned-podcasters, we talk with Charles about what made him decide to make the transition. It does get a bit political, since that's one of the main themes of his shows. You've been warned. We also discuss the direction of his new show, as well as how he's had to adapt to social media, and the love and hatred he's been exposed to through the lens of Twitter. As mentioned, keep an eye out for The Charles Adler Show on Crier Media. If you want to keep up with Charles in the meantime, you should also drop him a follow on Twitter or check out his personal website.A Transcription of this episode is available here.

Ep 357Tyler Glen: Going Geo-Local

E

If you were ever a fan of radio, there's a good chance you had a favourite morning show. A particular host, or group of hosts, who showed up every morning and gave you a laugh or a smile on your way to work. Unfortunately, it's also very likely that your favourite show ended at some point. Time marches on, budgets shift, people change, and eventually the hosts you know and love will inevitably take their services elsewhere. But in this day and age, when radio is on a slow, steady decline, where do they go?Well, in Tyler Glen's case, it was Twitch.tv. After hosting and programming morning shows for more than 20 years, Tyler has now made the shift to live streaming his own morning show, to resounding success. Tyler works out of Brandon, Manitoba, which is a tight but unbelievably supportive market. They've been with him for years, after all, and fans of his new show even give him free advertising out of the goodness of their hearts. Between being his own boss, gathering a number of generous sponsors, and the support of an incredibly loving community, Tyler couldn't be doing better. In this episode, we get all the details of Tyler's storied morning show career, including what prompted him to switch from public broadcasting to online live streaming, and the results of that decision (which are mostly very good). We also get quite a few more anecdotes about the incredible community that exists in Brandon, Manitoba, and honestly, his testimony is making me consider moving out there myself. To listen in on Tyler's morning show, drop him a follow on Twitch, and maybe subscribe if you're feeling generous. He's live every weekday morning from 8am-10am.You can also connect with Tyler on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, or on his website.A Transcription of this episode is available here.

Ep 356Rick Cummings: Radio Brands Built to Last

E

A few episodes ago, I interviewed Jeff Smulyan about his new book. As I read the book "Never Ride a Rollercoaster Upside Down", I wanted to hear more about the construction of some of the great radio stations like KPWR (Power 106) Los Angeles, and Hot 97 in New York. Rick Cummings was apart of those and number of other radio success stories. In this episode, Rick shares some great radio stories like what it was like to build Power 106 using a coalition of records from both pop, dance and Latino influences. You might think that the stories gets embellished along the way but no; there was true consternation amongst music and radio on how to handle a station like Power 106. (Check out the episode page for proof) You will also hear about Rick's favourite mistakes, (his three favourite to be exact) and how Emmis accidentally purchased a top ranked radio station in WLOL. Rick also shared his experiences working with great talent from David Letterman to Big Boy.A Transcription of this episode is available here. Ep 355Don Anthony: Morning Show Boot Camp

If you've ever been in radio in North America, either as a producer or as talent, you've probably heard about Morning Show Boot Camp. Heck, you've probably heard us talk about it on the show before. But why should you care?Well, for starters, it's been a killer resource for training radio talent since the 80's. Most broadcasters have either been to a session or know someone who has, because it's developed a reputation for being the best way to keep your on-air skills sharp. And today, we've got one of the original founders of the Boot Camp, Don Anthony, to tell us about how it's evolved and why it's still incredibly important and relevant.Don knows, as should everyone, that people just don't listen to radio for the music anymore. Sure, it's nice to find a station that plays your favourite songs, but it's even nicer to be able to pull them up on Spotify or Apple Music and play them anytime. So the question remains: what's the draw of radio in 2023? Don's answer is simple. Streaming services don't have a personality. Radio stations do. He talks to us about the importance of a good host, and the ways Morning Show Boot Camp helps on-air talent learn to harness their entertainment skills. He also shares some of his favourite experiences from the last 35 years of watching people become famous right in front of his eyes.Want to go to Morning Show Boot Camp? Sign up here! If you want to stay updated on all things radio, check out Don's website, The Morning Mouth.A Transcription of this episode is available here. Ep 354Chris Myers: Wired For Radio

E

The first time I heard about some of the great work Chris Myers was doing was when he was programming the Beat in Vancouver. I managed to get the before story and everything that happened next. It a very extensive collection of working with innovative companies and talented on air people. Companies like Rawlco, Bell Media, Harvard Broadcasting, and smaller outfits like Focus Entertainment, the first owners of the Beat in Vancouver.Chris was recently caught up in layoffs from one of the aforementioned groups, and took to Twitter to solicit audio from anyone willing to send it to him for free feedback. What a great opportunity considering nearly half of all air talent believe they do not get enough feedback as it is. Reach out to Chris if you would like to send him some audio or talk to him about his next opportunity. This show is made possible every week by contributors like:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. You can access a transcript of this episode here. Ep 353Jimmy Fink: Radio In New York's Backyard

Jimmy Fink has one of radio's most storied careers. It includes legendary call letters like WHFS, WPLJ (when it was an AOR station), WXRK (K-Rock, the station where Howard Stern worked in the 90's through to Sirius) and now 107.1 The Peak. It is also the station that brought Jimmy back to radio after he left it in the late 90's.In this episode you will hear about Jimmy's early days in radio, how he led his family business for a brief period in the 90's, why he left WPLJ, and what it was like to follow Howard Stern. We also dig into what makes the Peak a compelling listen, and why the station has quietly grown a world wide audience. Finally, no 2023 interview would be complete without discussing what impact the pandemic had on Jimmy's work. (Spoiler: He doesn't feel a need to go back to the studio)It was an earlier episode with Arielle Nissenblatt that conjured up memories of this cool station I would listen to on my trips down I-87 into New York. Arielle grew up listening to the station and contributes a question as well. This show is made possible every week by contributors like:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.A transcript of this episode is available hereSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 352Hawkeye: Country Radio Hall of Famer, Mornings New Country 96.3 Dallas

I had my first trip to Dallas last August and was looking forward to a few things: Visiting the Texas School Book Depository, Eating some Texas BBQ, and listening to the radio. We did all three but I did not check out a lot of country radio which is weird because Dallas radio is full of country music, sports, and is the home of the venerable Kidd Kraddick show. It also has some legendary personalities who have left their mark on the city (like Kidd), but also Ron Chapman, Terry Dorsey and Tom Joyner who did mornings in Dallas before jetting off to Chicago DAILY to do afternoon drive.Hawkeye has been apart of all of that in the market, including working alongside Terry Dorsey where he learned how to morning radio on the job. In this episode we discussed what makes Dallas a great place to do radio, what it takes to have a successful show in market number 5, why consultants can help grow your career, and what you need to know when you move to Dallas to do radio. We also had some random discussion about the sports scene, the changing demographics in communities and where to get some good Texas BBQ.We also spent time talking about the morning show, including the division in work and performance between himself and his co-host Michelle, and how much time to allot to on air vs. online. This show is made possible every week by contributors like:Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. For a Transcription of this episode - click here.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Jeff Smulyan is the founder and CEO of Emmis Communications, creator of all sports radio, one time owner of the Seattle Mariners, and now an author. He has written a book called Never Ride a Roller Coaster Upside Down which chronicles his career as a leader in broadcasting. In this episode, you will hear why Jeff chose to study telecommunications and history at the University of Southern California, managing talent such as David Letterman, Ken Griffey and Don Imus, his purchase of the Seattle Mariners, the creation of the all-sports radio format that morphed into the legendary WFAN, and what the future for radio and podcasting looks like. You should definitely buy the book just to see all the legendary call letters and enjoy all the broadcast stories and decision making rationale.Get Your Copy of the Book. Ep 350Jeff Vidler: Signal Hill Insights

E

It's been two and a half years since we had Jeff Vidler on the show. It doesn't feel like that because I am subscribed to Signal Hill's Newsletter, attend a number of their webcasts, and meet up with Jeff at Podcast conferences like Podcast Movement and Radio Days North America. All that to say, the last time we spoke to Jeff we were in the throes of a pandemic. Now we are well on the other side of it and it is (again) a totally new world. In this episode you'll hear some thoughts about podcast's possible shift back to indie focused business models, the difference between American and Canadian podcast consumption, and the difference between those of Quebec vs. The Rest of Canada. We also talked about some of work he has done with Sounds Profitable and we discuss some of the ways podcasters can interact and learn about their audiences.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. For a Transcription of this episode - Click hereSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 349Vinnie Taylor: Clear Across Alberta

Vinnie Taylor is one half of Stingray's morning show on Real Country 95.5 in Red Deer, Alberta. His career has spanned the 80's to now. We have heard from his co-host Randi Chase on two separate occasions on this show, and thought it was about time we heard from the other half of the show. In this episode you will hear how Vinnie was raised on 630 CHED... and started his radio career in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. We also heard about his time working with Peppermint Patti (morning show co-host) and Gayle Zarbatany (program Director) at Kiss in Calgary; and the unique format that station had. And what's it like to work on a morning show... with a co-host you get along with... that broadcasts clean across Alberta?A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. For transcript of this episode click hereSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 348Corey Dylan: Big on Radio, Food, Drink and Travel

Back in 2018, Corey Dylan was on the show and her episode about being resilient was one of our most downloaded. Things like unemployment, restructuring, and looking for work in radio are rather evergreen. However, attitudes need to shift as programmers are hiring differently than they were a few years ago.In this episode, Corey and I discuss resiliency (again), attitudes when looking for work, and keeping yourself adaptable to the ever changing wants of programmers. This is the first episode I have recorded since returning from a long period in Spain, where I filled my instagram with food and travel pics... which Corey would comment on. I have shared a few of the photos and recipes on things we discussed over on the blog page. (Coming Friday)Until then, please connect with Corey on all her socials and share this episode far and wide with someone who is feeling discouraged in their job search.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. For a transcript of this episode, click here. Ep 347Kat Carter: The Radio Nerd

In all the years we've been doing this podcast, we've seen lots of radio lovers come and go. That might lead you to believe you've seen the most knowledgeable, radio-obsessed folks in the industry already, but believe me when I say they pale in comparison to Kat Carter.Kat, also known as The Radio Nerd, has made her whole brand based on knowing cool things about radio (if that wasn't obvious from her title). She started The Radio Nerd in 2019 after ten years of working in the industry, and has since grown to have tens of thousands of followers across her various social medias. To catalogue all the things she touches on would take ages, but to give you an idea: Her website contains blog posts about the state of radio and voiceover, as well as preserving radio dramas of years past from legends like Orson Welles. Her TikTok features tons of helpful tips for aspiring broadcasters, as well as just being generally very funny. Her Instagram is full of neat little tidbits of information, history, and plenty of motivation for anyone interested on radio... The list goes on. The point is, Kat knows radio and isn't afraid to show it.We discuss Kat's radio days, especially her time as music director at CHUM FM in Toronto, which is where she says she really started to get her confidence up. She shares some of the secrets to building a great program, as well as what caused her to eventually pivot away from working in radio to pursue voiceover instead. If you consider yourself a radio nerd of any degree, you'll enjoy everything Kat has to offer. As mentioned, you can find Kat on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and of course her website.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Blurve: A great way to help you prep your Show.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. For transcription of this episode, click here. Ep 346Ian Leonard: Canadian Export, Chief Meteorologist Fox 9 Minneapolis

Ian Leonard is the Chief Meteorologist at Fox 9 in Minneapolis. Sadly, this is a channel that I do not get in Winnipeg. Ian and I worked together on Stony Plain Road in Edmonton back in the 90's. What I didn't know is that he is a second generation broadcaster, grew up around the TV station and there was a moment in 2002 when he and his wife Christy decided to take a chance and head south. In this episode you will hear about Ian growing up in Edmonton and being apart of television at an early age. We share a few stories from 90's, weather related ones too including the Pine Lake tornado which I had completely forgotten about until we walked that part of memory lane. We also discuss how Ian has made pivots and transitions in how he presents the weather and what social media tool are most important to him now. There is also a lot we did not discuss including his battle with cancer and the extensive role he plays working with the Special Olympics. Ep 345Rob Creighton: On Air and Online in Sedalia

E

This week, we've got another long-time radio industry veteran, Rob Creighton. You might not know his name up here in Canada, but down in the States, he's been running shows from Lubbock, Texas to Chicago, Illinois for the last few decades.Nowadays, Rob has moved away from the stations and back to his home state of Missouri to work with Townsquare Media. They're a name you might recognize if you've followed the show for a while- we've had a few guests who worked with them, like Melz on the Mic, and that's partially because I just really like how Townsquare does things. Companies that make radio ads are dime-a-dozen, but Townsquare tailors to the digital side too. If you've listened to the show at all before today, you'll know exactly how important that is to me and why, and if you're curious about how they do it, you can check out some of their service offerings here.Rob and I dive into his history on the radio and in the program director's chair, as well as what prompted his move off the airwaves and into Townsquare's office in Sedalia, Missouri. As I said earlier, Missouri is his home state, and Rob couldn't be happier to be back, especially working for a company that lets him find a balance he's always craved. If you want to work with Townsquare, you can check out their main website here. This week's guest is Manitoba local, Flames Nation legend, and recent podcast convert Dean "Boomer" Molberg.Dean hosts the Barn Burner podcast, a show dedicated to everything Calgary Flames-related, along with his long-time cohost/friend Ryan Pindler and former Flames player Rhett Warrener. But much like many of our guests, Dean has a long and storied history in radio. He's been in the industry for decades at this point, but you're most likely to know him from his tenure on the morning show at FAN 960 in Calgary.Dean and I talk about fan interactions, interviewing pros before they went pro, why his team felt the switch to podcasting was a necessary one, and most importantly, hockey. Dean's full of stories you won't want to miss, from both junior hockey teams like the legendary Wheat Kings and NHL teams like the Flames. Dean also spoke at length about his team at CKX in Brandon, Manitoba. Ep 343Marie: The Radio Fam

If you've ever wondered what our show might look like if it was built by a millennial, look no further than The Radio Fam. It's a YouTube-first podcast that's not unlike this one, and today's guest is its owner and creator, Marie. The Radio Fam's mission statement is to break the mold of mainstream radio stations' crappy social media integration. All the way back in 2009, Marie was aware that most stations weren't doing enough to build their brands through the internet, which was where the idea for The Radio Fam began. It didn't come to fruition until 2017, but thankfully for Marie (and unfortunately for the rest of the industry), most radio stations were still just as behind then as they were 8 years before.Nowadays, it's a place for people to connect with one another, and in their own words from TheRadioFam.com, it's "a resource for those that are looking to the future of radio," which is no doubt something more people in the radio business need to do.In this episode, Marie tells us about her lifelong passion for radio, from growing up listening to the stations in and around Seattle, to volunteering for their street teams in her free time, and eventually landing proper paid roles in marketing and promotions. She also talks to us about her eventual shift to podcasting, and goes deeper on what inspired her to start The Radio Fam.If you like what you hear from Marie in this episode, you should definitely check out The Radio Fam on YouTube, as well as dropping them a follow on all the usual social media, which can be found at the bottom of their website.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.NLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.A Transcript of the episode is available here.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 341Cathy Faulkner: KISW Seattle and the G-Word

It is fitting that this episode is being published on World Radio Day. Cathy Faulkner worked at KISW in Seattle from 1981 through to the early 2000's. She spent most of her time as the station's music director and on air. During that period, Cathy championed the local music scene and had a front row view to the ascension of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and some of the Seattle bands that did not get grouped into the G-Word category like Queensryche, and Candlebox. In this episode, you will learn that it is all about timing. Especially in the case of Nirvana who released their Nevermind CD the first day that Cathy took the music director position. We also discussed some other rock radio groups who shaped the soundtrack of rock radio in the 90's like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tool and Brother Cane.KISW celebrated 50 years recently and you can check out this episode from their current morning personality BJ Shea here.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.A Transcript of the episode is available here. Ep 340Dean Blundell: Crier Media

E

This week we're joined by Dean Blundell to talk about his newest venture: Crier Media. It's the best way to find all the blog and podcast content you love from Dean's network, all in one place, but it's also a lot more than that. It's a cooperative of podcasters, writers, bloggers, and all kinds of folks from the radio industry who got sick of seeing big radio companies prioritize the wrong things. The Sound Off Media Company partnered with Dean a few years ago and manage the podcast side of their business and collaborate on marketing.Crier Media wants to shift the focus back to the talent, and give them a springboard to do whatever they want with their own content. We talk with Dean about why he started Crier, as well as how it ties into his storied and controversial history with radio and his podcast. He calls it being a responsible citizen- no guidelines for what can and can't be covered, no fear of taking risks because some corporate bigwig is afraid of losing profits, just digging as deep as you need to on stories that need to be told. This discussion inevitably leads us to talking about Caryma Sa'd, who works with Dean regularly and who we both agree is awesome. The best place to follow her is on Twitter, but you can also check out her website, carymarules.com. And hey, you can find her posts on Crier, too! And, of course, it wouldn't be a Sound Off Podcast episode with a former radio personality without copious discussion about the inevitable death of radio. But we're not just ragging on it needlessly- a lot of Dean's reasons for starting Crier are tightly tied into the problems radio is facing. From personalities taking the backseat to radio stations broadly sucking wind when it comes to transitioning to podcasts, we talk about all the things that made Dean sick enough to start his own place for the lost and forgotten souls of radio to feel at home again. It should go without saying that you should check out Crier Media, but that goes double if you're a broadcast industry vet looking to start doing your own thing. Head to their website, Crier.co, or shoot an email to [email protected] and they'll see what they can do for you. You should also follow Dean in all the usual places: DeanBlundell.com, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. Here is a transcription if you need one.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 339Paul Jacobs: What Happened at CES?

E

Paul and Fred Jacobs start off every year by going to Consumer electronics Show in Las Vegas. It invigorates and really sets the table for the year. The show takes place the first week of January when many are still in their Christmas and New Year's stupor when many are unaware of what day it is.In this episode, I ask Paul about what he saw at CES and discuss the dash, AI, the future of AM radio, and the future of Public Radio. We also get into the three R's which include radio, retail and recession. Paul has a very steadfast answer for that third one and I can tell you based on what I have seen with travel and the number of houses being renovated on my street - he's right. Please take the time to check out this webinar from Jacobs Media about what Fred and Paul saw at CES. It'd one hour and 7 minutes and it is designed to show radio people where we may be headed in the future. It will cost you only your email address and you will be rewarded with a daily blog which is also useful.I also was unaware that Sheri Lynch went to CES for the first time and she is a truly forward thinking broadcaster and shared her thoughts about what she saw.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. Here is a transcription if you need one. Ep 338Adam Seaborn: The Sports Podcast Boon

Adam Seaborn is a sports media analyst and head of partnerships at Playmaker Capital. Last year, the Nation Network was purchased for $15 million and perhaps a few eyebrows went up. By 2023 standards, it appears to be a bargain given the dissolution of notable sports radio properties that have disappeared in markets like Calgary, Vancouver, Hamilton and Winnipeg. Of note, Maryann Turke who ran Bell for a number of years, and also worked at the NFL is the company's board director. This is a sector of the content economy that has value with a long runway for growth. In this episode, you will pick up a few best practices on how to make your sports podcast flourish, what the numbers say between both traditional and digital media, and how we count all this in order to sell it to advertisers. Please Follow Adam on Twitter... he's a good follow. Introducing: Takin' A Walk

bonus

Buzz Knight should be a familiar name to anyone who's followed us for a while. He's been on the podcast twice before, and we've talked at length about his show, Takin' A Walk: Music History On Foot. This week, we're doing a full-on feed swap!If you're somehow unaware of Buzz and the concept behind Takin' A Walk, it's a show designed around the simple pleasure of a refreshing walk and a good conversation. Buzz speaks to music legends from different genres, hoping to catch them in their element by taking them for a walk around areas that mean something special to them. And he definitely succeeds! He's found that people tend to tell some really interesting stories (and have an easier time getting comfortable) when they're out getting fresh air in places they've made memories.Buzz is also a great example of something more podcasters should take advantage of: niche-ing down. We've talked about this concept on our episodes with Buzz and Evo Terra, but in summary, to "niche down" your show means to focus exclusively on a particular type of content. Sounds simple, right? And yet so many podcasts seem to be about everything. One episode they'll talk about their personal lives, the next episode they'll interview an athlete, then they'll talk politics, et cetera, et cetera, ad infinitum. If you've got a great personality, or an established fanbase, that can work fine. But let's be honest- most of us don't. By focusing on a particular niche, like music history in Buzz's case, and trimming the rest of the fat, you open the door to becoming the go-to show for anyone interested in that niche. It's worked quite well for Buzz, if you couldn't tell by looking at his guest list: Brian Johnson of AC/DC, Paula Abdul, and many more.If you want more music history goodness, check out Takin' A Walk wherever you get your podcasts, or head straight to the source at takinawalk.com.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 337Danny Brown: A Call to Support

At its core, podcasting has always been about marketing. So it should come as more surprise that Danny Brown found his way into podcasting. I first became aware of Danny when I found his assisting many others on Facebook groups with typical podcast problems like, "How do I get more Downloads?", and "I just bought a Blue Yeti and it sucks, what is a better podcast mic to use?" That led to Danny becoming about of renowned Captivate.FM as a support leader. In this episode, you will hear answers to some of those typical podcast questions, find out Danny's take on Podcasting 2.0 and the value of having transcription on your show, and what Scottish football club he cheers for and why. As a fun bonus, we are going to attempt to use a new transcription service to see how it fares with Danny's Scottish accent and my Canadian accident. Ep 336Randi Chase: Keeping it Real

Randi Chase is back for another round on the show. The last time we had her on in 2018, we talked about her adventures up and down the radio dial in 7 Canadian markets- she was certainly living a "WKRP in Cincinnati" lifestyle. She's remained at the same station since 2018, but a few changes have taken place. Firstly, she moved to Red Deer, and her morning show with Vinny Taylor is now simulcast across stations in the Stingray radio group. And yes, you can still find her doing mornings at Real Country 95.5.In this episode, Randi and I talk about how Alberta has changed since the first time we both moved there. We also explore the project she was working on with Sarah Edmondson, which is a name you might remember from the collection of stories about the NXIVM sex cult stories that came out of Albany, NY. If you want to hear more about that, check out Sarah's podcast, A Little Bit Culty. If you want to hear Randi live, but you're not local to the Red Deer area, you can still tune in on their website. You can also find Randi on Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn if you'd like to keep up with her.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.A transcription will be forthcoming.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 335The Seventh Very Terry Christmas

E

It's that time of year again. Chestnuts are roasting on open fires, homes are lit up like the Las Vegas strip, presents are under trees, and I'm sitting down with my good friend Terry DiMonte for the 7th annual Very Terry Christmas. It's our favourite tradition, especially since we no longer live close enough to each other to go out for drinks together. Although if I'm honest, the theme of this episode is less Christmassy and more grumpy. What begins as nostalgia for the good old days- Christmas in Montreal, great food, great friends, and great radio- slowly turns into wondering what happened to all that great stuff. I don't know if age turns everyone into a Scrooge, but I think it's starting to have that effect on Terry and I. Especially when it comes to the food. We talk a lot about food. We even spend a bit of time talking about the weather. I know. But don't get the wrong idea, because there are still some incredibly funny and interesting stories tucked away in here. Guys with Terry's experience in broadcasting have no shortage of those. That's why I bring him back every year- well, that and the fact that he's one of the best friends I've got. And clearly age hasn't slowed him down too much, because he's still doing his annual discussions with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which you can listen to here.I hope you enjoy the seventh edition of A Very Terry Christmas, and from everyone here at the Soundoff Podcast Network, we hope you have a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.Click here for a transcript of this episodeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 334Rob Greenlee: No Podcast Predictions, Just A Look Forward

Rob Greenlee returns to the show. He last appeared back in 2017 just after we did a panel on podcasting at the Conclave in Minneapolis. Rob is someone I hear from every week as he co-hosts the New Media Show with Todd Cochrane. So even though he has not appeared on this show I feel as though I he from him every week.Rob has a new position as SVP of Content and Partnerships. He had been with Libsyn the last three years and with Voxnest and Spreaker before that. The Podcasting Hall of Famer joins me to talk about many of the challenges podcasters are contemplating these days, including getting heads around a video strategy for their podcasts and Podcasting 2.0 which Rob and I tackle in the second half of the show. We also had an interesting discussion about the role podcasting can play when it comes to Live and local. Can Podcasting take that from radio? As of recently, Rob also made a departure from Podbean in favour of focusing more energy on being a full-time content creator. You can read his full statement in this Tweet. If you can't get enough of what we are talking about on the show - you can get a weekly delivery of this on the New Media Show where you can get a PhD in Podcasting. If you wanted to check out those podcasting tip sheets from YouTube, you can download them here.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.Click here for a transcript of this episodeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 333Dani Stover: It's Her coming Through the Speakers

E

The last time we had Dani Stover on the show, she was between opportunities and wondering what her relationship with radio should be shaped like. It turns out that she has answered that question and the answer is a new role in the evenings on 640 Toronto. Over the last while she has been producing alongside daytime host Kelly Cutrara and now Dani takes control of 7-10pm in the region on 640 Toronto, 900 CHML Hamilton and 980 CFPL in London. In this episode, Dani and I dive into what we expect to hear in the evenings in Toronto, why this position is the best one for her right now and what we can expect when she launches the new 640 Toronto Podcast in the coming weeks or months. We also dug into the silliness of social media and what constitutes the right amount of usage for her needs.Shoutout to Larry Gifford who is the lead of News/Talk content at Corus. Ep 332Bryn Griffiths: Over 100 Minutes of Stories

E

If you've listened to sports radio in Alberta anytime in the last three decades, you probably know Bryn Griffiths. He's been positively prolific in covering the NHL and CFL teams in the area since the 90's- which is around when I met him.Bryn joins us from Edmonton this week to talk about his lifelong passion for sports and broadcasting, and fair warning, this episode is a big one. We begin by exploring why he got into radio, and my jealousy over the fact that different time zones allowed Bryn to catch Monday Night Football as a kid without staying up past his bedtime. We continue into stories about his career in radio, his favourite interviews, the usual sports talk, and of course, a long chat about the current state of sports radio (and radio in general). As you might expect from someone who's been the rockstar of Albertan sports radio for the last 30-odd years, Bryn also drops a metric ton of broadcasting wisdom throughout this episode. From how to tell a story, to what makes certain radio and TV shows feel special, and much, much more. Quite honestly, this is a tricky one to summarize, because we just talk about so much- but it's all worth hearing, I promise. Bryn is an endless font of wisdom for any aspiring radio star.If you don't believe me, listen to the kind words of "The Wiz" and two-time guest on this podcast, Marty Forbes:"We built something that I think the industry needs, and that is what we call one stop podcasting. And what I hear from everybody is, 'Geez, I really would like to do one of these things. I don't have the time and I don't have the wherewithal,' but they have the knowledge... Well, Bryn has all the parts that you need, and all he needs is knowledge. So he's built... a complimentary service so that guys can use podcasting for pure commercial intent and backgrounding for their businesses. So he's very good at it... It's a neat template that's rather unique, and (he) has built this template to be really profitable and meaningful in his life, that he's now doing something he really enjoys. He's a great guy to talk to."Nowadays, Bryn is the Director of Podcast and Audio Production at Road 55, a production house in Edmonton that works with you every step of the way to help you create the best version of whatever content you want to make. If that sounds appealing, you can check out their website here. For another interesting little tidbit, check out this YouTube channel belonging to Mark Summers. He's saved all the air checks from a ton of Edmonton radio stations, and they're definitely a fun listen. If you'd like to keep up with Bryn, you can follow him on Instagram, Twitter, or LinkedIn.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.Click here for a transcript of this episodeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 331Wendy Mesley: Freedom 65

If you're a Canadian audience member who's tuned in to a CBC News broadcast anytime in the last 20 or so years, this week's guest should look very familiar. We're joined by Wendy Mesley, the longtime Sunday host of CBC's The National, among several other shows in CBC's repertoire. In this episode, you will hear about Wendy's early years as a reporter at CFCF in Montreal, her time in radio in Toronto, and her years at the CBC. Wendy officially retired from the CBC in July 2021, but she hasn't been sitting idly by since then. She's currently hosting a wildly successful podcast, Women of Ill Repute, with her good friend and fellow CBC alum Maureen Holloway. In its first week, the show hit #1 on Apple Podcasts in Canada- and it just so happens to be produced by our network. If you haven't yet, you can give it a listen here.Of course, Wendy shares lots of details about the podcast and how it's come together over the past few months, but we also talk about her time in radio and TV news- specifically the way the landscape of journalism has changed in the 40 years she's been doing it. And for those of you familiar with Wendy, yes, we do touch on a certain controversy you might have heard about when she left the CBC.For more of Wendy, check out Women Of Ill Repute on the Soundoff Podcast Network, give her a follow on Twitter, or check out her weekly newsletter on Substack.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.Click here for a transcript of this episodeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 330David Phillips: The Thing is Not The Thing

NLogic has been a supporter of our podcast since 2017. In that time, we've had NLogic's President and COO David Phillips on the show to discuss the radio industry's relationship with audience data. In the current day and age, we have more audience data than ever before, and often we can't see what is relevant in the moment. I saw David at a panel at Canadian Music Week not too long ago, and had some questions I needed to ask him. That, paired with the fact that he's leaving NLogic in the next few weeks, meant I just had to get him back for another chat.In this episode, we speak to David about how he manages to take in all that data, and what the evaluation process looks like. We also talk about what radio stations can do to enhance their monetization opportunities, since it's become a bit of a trend that radio companies don't want to innovate. Listener be warned: this chat gets very technical, so hopefully you're a radio nerd like us.The other aspect we explore is television- what's the business model of the future? Is it subscription/streaming services? Is it completely free? And most importantly for us, how does that play into potential business strategies for radio? The two might seem unrelated, but I promise they're more closely intertwined than you might think. If you want to connect with David, or hear more of his thoughts, you can drop him a follow on LinkedIn.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.Click here for a transcript of this episodeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 329Tony Doe: Networking Nigeria

This week, we're making what might be the longest-distance connection we've ever made for an episode. Tony Doe is a Nigerian Radio and Podcast Consultant who spent years on-air in the past, and remains a podcast staple in Nigeria.I'm willing to bet most of our audience has never really thought about the podcast and radio scene in Nigeria, but as Tony will tell you, it's certainly different from what we have in North America. Stable, cheap internet is much harder to come by, and as a whole, the country is much more fragmented- both by languages and by the fact that each person likely has multiple SIM cards and phone numbers for different parts of the country.Tony walks us through the way radio stations have come to handle these challenges, and what it's meant for the development of Nigerian broadcasting as a whole. He explains how he got into radio in the first place, how it's changed over the years, and some new developments rolling in that he thinks could change the landscape of broadcasting in a big way. He also shares some traditional broadcaster wisdom about what it means to be a great radio host, and how to make your show feel "complete."If you'd like to stay caught up with Tony, the best way is through The Tony Doe Podcast. If you're a fan of Arsenal Football Club, you can also check out his other show, UPGNRS. Ep 327Tessa Malisani's Many Roles

This week's guest is Tessa Malisani. Tessa is a voiceover artist, and if you couldn't tell from the title, one with quite the diverse portfolio. Aside from her current VO work, you'd probably be most likely to recognize her as the voice of the weeknight shift on 99.9 Virgin Radio in Toronto. You might also know her as the host of the backstage lounge at the iHeartRadio MMVA's. Or for her time on CTV and MUCH Music. Or for her interviews with A-list celebs like Dwayne Johnson and Cardi B... The list goes on.In this episode, Tessa talks to us about her career path and how she's kept it so open. We go over her past, her present, and a little bit about her plans for the future. There's no shortage of juicy information and stories here.If you're an aspiring VO artist, radio host, TV personality, or any other position that puts you in the spotlight, this episode is a great reminder to think about all the ways you can leverage your skills. There's no need to pigeonhole yourself into one position- if you've got a great voice for radio, chances are you'll sound great on TV or in voiceovers too. Keep your options open, and hopefully one day your resume might look a bit like Tessa's.To keep up with Tessa, you can follow her on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and LinkedIn, or check out her YouTube channel. Clayon Kroeker came out of Don Scott's Western Academy of Broadcast back in 2010 with eyes on becoming a sports commentator. Don suggested that he try FM Music to start as there are more opportunities avaiable. He landed the very coveted overnight position at GX94 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan which still believes in the power of overnight radio. Clayton then went on to work at Golden West Broadcasting in oil rich Estevan before landing in Saskatoon with Harvard owned Cruz 96.3.In this episode, you will meet Clayton's dog Kipper and learn his back story. You will also hear about his search for the best chicken fingers. Much the same way Dave Portnoy at Barstool Sports rates Pizza, Clayton is a chicken finger aficionado. I did not ask him about his affinity for playing goalie, but we did discuss his relationship with the Saskatoon Blades where he is the intermission house announcer.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversnLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.Click here for a TRANSCRIPT of this episode. Ep 321Fred Jacobs: Catching Up

It has been 515 days since we had Fred Jacobs has been on the show. Back then we were unpacking a lot of the surprising results from a Covid induced Tech Survey. This time we have the benefit of catching up on three pieces of research that I felt needed discussing: The two Tech Survey's for Public Radio and Commercial radio, and the AQ4 Survey which targets air talent. The fourth instalment of AQ was released at Morning Show Boot Camp in Chicago in August and it is an eye opening piece of research that is riveting for air talent as it allows them to feel a little more connected in the daily battle of content creation in 2022. You can link to the results here. Fred feels that the research is important enough to share with your radio group. If you over see a number of radio stations and need your owner, VP or local decision maker to see the results, Fred has made himself available and you can reach him at +1 248-353-9030. It takes about 45 minutes.Matt's Hot Take: If the report were about what your clients thought of you, you'd have a copy on the corner of your desk.Fred and I also talked about their return to the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. Ep 320Jay Nachlis: Sharing Insights

Jay Nachlis recently celebrated 5 years at Coleman Insights, he admitted that "not every career move I've made was the best decision, but every one of them was important for different reasons. With every single one, I made lasting friendships, learned from mistakes, and got better." Which is why he ascended to VP/Consultant & Marketing Director at Coleman Insights earlier this year. I had the opportunity to meet Jay at Podcast Movement earlier this year and found ourselves talking about Canadian radio, Buffalo, the Buffalo Bills, podcasting, and more Buffalo Bills. In this episode, you will hear about Jay's early radio days working in Syracuse at the campus radio station, (WJPZ) going back to San Francisco to look for work, only to return to Syracuse at WYYY and rise to PD at the age of 24. We later get into his time in Buffalo, Detroit and a very important moment involving comedian Kurtis Connor, which Jay blogged about here. We also spoke about the buzz in the room at Morning Show Bootcamp and Podcast Movement.Jay also does voiceoversA thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversnLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 319Dervla Trainor: V.O. North Returns

We last spoke to Dervla Trainor back in 2019. Dervla is the founder and co-owner of the V.O. North conference, and it was getting to that point where the event was creating FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) for people in the Voice over community. Sadly, the pandemic caused a disruption to that momentum with 2020 being shifted online and 2021 postponed. However, the event is back and better than ever September 16-18 at the Pantages Hotel in Toronto.Check out the lineup and show here. In this episode, Dervla speaks to us about the genesis of the event, how she has steered her way through the voiceover business during the pandemic, and what we can expect in Toronto at Canada's premiere Voiceover event. We also briefly discussed some of the newer problems in the business with the emergence of Artificial intelligence, pricing and keeping control on where your voice goes. There are also the most useful of session involving marketing, search engine optimization and CRM's. The conference is open to beginners and experts alike. While not advertised as such, there is a lot of mentoring that takes places at V.O. North. We also talked about Bev Standing's unique story which was recently featured on the podcast Twenty Thousand HertzClick here for a transcription of the show.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversnLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 318Sam Cook: Taking Her Shots

E

This episode, versatility is the word of the day. Sam Cook is currently the host and executive producer of The Shot, a singer/songwriter competition show filmed in Toronto, but she's also spent time as a radio host, podcaster, VO artist, and on-screen with other TV networks like YTV.It should go without saying that most people don't begin their career on one of the biggest shows in television history, but that's exactly what Sam did. We talk to her about how a Canadian girl managed to land an internship on David Letterman in New York, and how she followed it up with getting a job at YTV by crashing her car in the parking lot. Certainly not a conventional start, but a roaring one nonetheless. We also talk about how she began to fall in love with radio, and when she made the move to voiceover and teaching. Sam teaches On-Air Television at Mohawk College, and in the latter half of the episode, we dive into everything about teaching the hosts of tomorrow - including some of my rather strong opinions about entry-level radio jobs.To connect with Sam, you can follow her on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube.Or, if you're considering her for any radio/voiceover positions, check out her website.CLICK HERE to get a transcript of this episode.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversnLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 317Todd Cochrane: More Podcast Questions Answered

Todd Cochrane is a guest you might recognize. Last time he was on the show, in October 2019, we kept things fairly light. This time, however, diving straight into the deep end on the technical side of podcasting: RSS feeds, micro payments, Podcast 2.0, and what the future might look like for podcasts. If you're a creator who cares about the computer mumbo-jumbo that goes on behind the scenes, this episode is for you.Todd is the team leader at Blubrry, a podcast hosting platform that's breaking new ground in terms of what your platform can do for you. Of course we go into more detail in the episode, but here's an overview. Blubrry is partnered with Descript, meaning Descript users can publish edited episodes directly from the app. It also features programmatic advertising, and as of August 21st, something extra unique: built-in transcriptions that can be activated from an embedded player. Seriously next-level. And the best part is, the team is still developing and expanding the project every day.We also discuss a commonly asked question in the podcast world- What is Podcast 2.0? Or Rss 2.0, whatever you'd like to call it. You've probably heard this term a lot if you're involved with podcasting, and Todd gives an incredible rundown that's much too long to repeat here. But in summary, it's less of a replacement for the current systems, and more of a way to bring them into the future. You won't need to worry about drastically changing the way you upload podcasts. Think of it like going from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Same system, but with more features. For more about the future of podcasting, I'd also highly recommend Podcasting 2.0, hosted by Adam Curry and Dave Jones. It's all about new developments in the podcast sphere, and if this episode felt like an appetizer for you, Podcasting 2.0 is the main course. You should definitely keep up with Todd, too. You can follow him on Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook for more updates as Blubrry continues to grow and evolve.CLICK HERE to get a transcript of this episode.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free. The CHR Prep Service - Click to get a free trial.nLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 316Jeff Winskell: The Wind Just Pushed Me This Way

E

Jeff Winskell is a bit of an anomaly in radio. Most folks attend university courses specifically tailored to broadcast, which leads them into the industry naturally, but Jeff went from film student to radio show producer in just a few years. In this episode, we talk about exactly how that transition went, as well as the lengthy radio career he created for himself afterwards. Jeff's been a large-scale program director all across Canada, from Vancouver to Ontario, working with big names like Virgin and Bell Media. He's also been recognized for his work more than most- He has a total of 13 nominations for Canadian Broadcast Industry Awards, with 5 of those being wins (Station of the year, 2x Music Director of the year, and 2x Program Director of the year).Jeff and I discuss the path he took across the nation, the differences he found between the East and West, and the logistics of being in charge of 21 radio stations at the same time. Yes, you read that right. As of right now, he's taking a break from radio, and finally going back to his university roots as a camera operator. And as if his story wasn't crazy enough already, he's also got his own woodworking business on the side, making beautiful live-edge tables and home décor. He's a self-described jack-of-all-trades, master of none, but I'd argue his mountain of broadcasting awards says otherwise. To connect with Jeff, check him out on LinkedIn, or consider picking up something from his woodworking shop, WoodXperts Furniture. It's not every day you get to buy a table hand-crafted by a broadcasting legend.CLICK HERE to get a transcript of this episode.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free. The CHR Prep Service - Click to get a free trial.nLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 314Ari Daniel: Be Cool or Be Cast Out

I know what you are thinking; with a title like that, the episode involves Rush. It does not. But given all the discussion of Ari's upbringing in the Suburbs of Toronto, and his affinity for playing the bass, this lyric from the song Subdivisions came to my head.Ari Daniel now lives in Vancouver after working at great radio stations like Virgin Radio 94.5, Sun FM 99.9 in Kelowna, and EZ Rock 97.3 in Toronto. There are lots of legendary names that get mentioned in this episode; all contributors and inspirations to Ari's radio career which started at the age of 15 before he got to Ryerson. (Now Toronto Metropolitan University)In this episode you will hear how Ari wound up inside the building of 2 St. Clair as a teenager, how he loved moving across Canada to work in Kelowna, British Columbia, (who wouldn't) and how he arrived in Vancouver to work at the Beat 94.5 and then Virgin 94.5.Ari also hosts a podcast. You can link to it here. One hour, one anonymous caller, one story about addiction. I remember hearing about the podcast called Beautiful Anonymous a number of years ago and saying - I wish I had thought of that.
