Ep 313Eric Zane: Broadcast InZanity

E

This week's show features yet another broadcast icon who I've been a fan of for a long time. Eric Zane is one of many former radio hosts who've made the transition into podcasting, and he's done it more successfully than most. Back when I met Eric in 2019, I knew him from the Free Beer & Hot Wings radio show out of Grand Rapids, Michigan- a show he'd just begun to pivot away from to debut his own podcast. But this was 2019, and it wasn't so easy back then to make the switch.Eric was one of the first to pick up on the new wave of monetization for podcasting, a wave we're all still riding to this day, and The Eric Zane Show remains a gold standard podcast 3 years later. Together, we talk about how he managed to make that switch, the stumbles he made along the way, and which avenues for support have been the most successful for him. We also dive into his storied radio career in Grand Rapids, where he still lives.Something we didn't get a chance to talk about on the show, but that I definitely think should tell you a lot about Eric's character, is the time he donated a kidney to an old friend from high school. Check out his Fox News interview about it, or read the full story here. And here's a fun fact, for those who might not know Eric or his show: he puts out two episodes per day. One for his regular free show, and one exclusive episode for his Patreon supporters. This means that he's put out over 800 episodes total in just three years. As a podcast producer myself, the amount of work that schedule would require not only gives me an anxiety attack, but also a massive amount of respect for Eric's work ethic and dedication to his show.If you want to learn more about Eric, you're in luck- he just happens to be one of the most connected podcast hosts out there. Of course there's website, where you can (and should) listen to his show, but you can also follow him on Twitter, Facebook, or YouTube, support him on Patreon for exclusive bonus content, or even join his Subreddit r/TheEricZaneShow to become a part of his community.PHOTO CREDIT: Photo: Brian Kelly Photography & FilmA thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free. The CHR Prep Service - Click to get a free trial.nLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. For a Complete Transcript of this episode See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 312Jamie Cawdell: Producer Jamie

Jamie Cawdell is the Assistant Programme Controller at Radio Essex in England. He is also the curator the CHR Prep Service which is used on radio stations around the world including Virgin Radio in Canada and Z100 in New York. Over the years, we have seen many of radio's best branch out into other facets of the business. Whether it was John Mielke in the 90's starting his Milkman Unlimited business, Matt Fogarty or Drake Donovan shifting from Creative to voice imaging, or Bob & Sheri or Humble and Fred taking their show independent, there is always entrepreneurial latitude in the radio space. In this episode you will hear how Jamie got started in radio, the ins and outs of producing a breakfast radio show, and why he started the CHR Prep Service. We also get into what preparing for your show really constitutes and what radio talent is looking for before they head into the studio every day to perform OR record. If you are a regular listener to the show, please consider the one month free trial Jamie is offering. And we thank our other supporters including:nLogic for the data assistance. Ep 311Aaron Rand: Calling Gaddafi and other Radio Tales

E

Aaron Rand has been on Montreal radio since the 70’s. I didn’t catch on to his show until the mid 80’s where he became a household name, despite working at some radio stations that weren’t known for their ratings. Right around the time AM started its decline, Aaron Rand’s show started to take off. I ran into Aaron at (what I think is North America’s best restaurant) Joe Beef while having dinner with another Montreal radio icon, Terry Dimonte. The next thing said at the table was pretty obvious – although i think it might have been a look… ya gotta get him on your show. His radio career includes all the great Montreal radio Call letters like CFCF CKGM, CBC, CHOM, CFQR and now CJAD where he once worked and now resides doing the afternoon show.It is always a joy to speak to someone who you grew up listening to – Aaron Rand joins me from what appears to be his kitchen in Montreal.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.

Ep 310Sylvia Alvarado: What Happens on the Air in Vegas...

A lot of radio personalities are initially attracted to the medium because of the music. But some hosts, like Sylvia Alvarado, go far beyond a passing interest. As the midday host on KOMP 92.3 in Vegas, she's had incredible interviews with some of the biggest stars in rock music: Slash, Pat Carney from The Black Keys, Zakk Wylde, and Matt Schultz from Cage The Elephant, just to name a few. She's also a musician herself- She's sung the national anthem at games for the Vegas Aviators and the Golden Knights. Sadly, there isn't much footage out there, but when you consider that you only here about anthem singers when they mess up - this may be a good thing. (We do have a clip on our episode page)In this episode, Sylvia and I run through her history with music and radio, from her beginnings as a student at UNLV and a humble intern at KOMP all the way to her current position as the midday host. Even if it seems like she's a natural fit for radio, she had her fair share of struggles. We go over how she finally gained confidence in herself after 2 years (!) on the air, and how she tackled a few broadcasts in Spanish. We also go over the fierceness of creating and running promotions in Vegas, which is pretty much the global capital of promoting things. If you're listening from Vegas, you can hear Sylvia from 10am to 3pm on 92.3 KOMP. If you're not, you can also listen live on their website. (Yes even you Canada)To connect with Sylvia and learn more about her, you can follow her on Instagram and LinkedIn.Click Here for a Transcript of the show. Also a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Ep 308Marty Forbes: Return of the Wiz

E

Every time we have a radio veteran on the podcast, the conversation shifts to the future of radio at least once. But it's always about the future with Marty Forbes. He always has had an eye towards it. It's no secret that the broadcast industry is struggling to keep up with the times. But few guests have quite the depth of insight into radio's slow demise that Marty Forbes brings.A lifelong Program Director, VP and GM at stations like CKFM 99.9, the Bear in Edmonton, CISL, CKKS, CJAX, CKSL, and his first gig at CHNL in Kamloops, Marty knows the ins and outs of broadcasting in a way few others can match. He's seen far too many stations fail to meet the shifting tides of the media market, or more commonly, hurt themselves worse in the attempt. In 2009, Marty started Radiowise Inc. to help as many companies as possible to launch, rebuild, and evolve while avoiding these issues. However, since he decided to shut down Radiowise, now seems liek athe right time to ask him about the specific problems he's seen. Together, we dive into the challenges radio stations face in 2022, the way many companies are failing to address them, and the problems with the CRTC's stagnant grip on broadcasting. We also discuss Marty's extensive catalogue of public service efforts, but did not have a chance to list off the specifics. He's a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for community service, and he's been directly involved with a staggering number of charitable organizations: The Jerry Forbes Centre, Santas Anonymous, the Edmonton Singing Christmas Tree, Crescendo, and the John Cameron Changing Lives Foundation. If you want to hear more from Marty, you can check out his blog, Marty's Musings, where he talks about everything from business advice to travel planning. Ep 306Buzz Knight: Takin' A Walk

E

One of the better legacies the pandemic was people rediscovered the value and simplicity of taking a walk. There's something magical and simple about wandering around with someone you love to talk to and immersing yourself amongst the fresh air and conversation. This week Buzz Knight returns to the Sound Off Podcast. In February 2019, Matt Cundill and Buzz Knight talked about his previous podcast Healthy Paranoia. Buzz’s new one is called Takin' A Walk, and it's themed around Buzz simply going for a walk with guests, and having incredibly insightful conversations about their careers and what they see on the walk.Buzz is a radio veteran having spent most of his career as a Radio Executive at Beasley, and CBS Radio. As such, the guests are often connections he's made through his career, but they also include people like authors, athletes, musicians, and business owners. Buzz’s podcast aims to "embrace the mindfulness associated with walking along with the beauty of storytelling and conversation".In this episode, we reconnect with Buzz about what he decided to start Takin' A Walk, and he shares some anecdotes about the unique challenges presented by recording a podcast while walking around the streets of NYC, Boston, Chicago or wherever he finds himself. We backtrack to Buzz's time in radio, and his company, Buzz Knight Media, which works with other media companies to develop their business strategy. To get in touch with Buzz, you can follow him on Twitter or LinkedIn, or visit the Contact section of his website.Click Here For A Full TranscriptAlso a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Ep 305Nails Mahoney: On Air Coach

E

The show has been very Canada-centric for the last few weeks, so it felt like there was no better time to bring on a broadcast legend from another part of the world. This week's guest, Nails Mahoney, has been hosting top-rated radio shows in Ireland and the UK for decades. He's also worked as a TV presenter in Ireland, and performed onstage as a stand-up comedian and keynote/guest speaker at more than 30 workshops like TEDx Dublin. But don't drift away yet, our Canadian audience! Nails has also spent time in Canadian radio, including several years at Q107.On this episode, we talk about his path through radio, and some of the differences between Irish/UK radio and the scene in Canada. For example, did you know that the rock and grunge movement of the 90's never really made it over to Ireland? We also talk about Nails' current projects and future plans, including ONAIRCOACH, his private coaching service for on-air personalities. Nails shares a lot of insight about how he coaches different types of talent and why he felt the need to start the service in the first place.Later in the show, we touch on two of his biggest and most recent endeavours:The 5th annual RadioStar contest, a tournament between up-and-coming broadcasters to bring some notoriety to their name, and The Radio Space, a social media site designed specifically for people in the broadcast industry to mix and mingle. If you're in radio and sick of using Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook (and all the unrelated crud that comes with those sites), this is the place to be. As their website says, "Think Facebook but ONLY for radio! No Algorithm. No ads. YOU are in charge of what you see."With that being said, if you're not in the radio industry, you should still follow Nails on LinkedIn and Twitter. If you have any radio coaching questions, he'll be happy to help you out.Click Here For A Full TranscriptAlso a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Ep 304Adrian Harewood: The Power Of Change

E

It's not unusual for me to bring old friends onto the show. In fact, a good chunk of our episodes have come about because of existing connections I've had in the broadcast industry. What is unusual, though, is for me to bring on a friend from all the way back in elementary school- one who's also had an incredible broadcast career, and who until recording this episode, I hadn't spoken to since 1984.This week's guest, Adrian Harewood, has been with the CBC since 2006. Once upon a time, he was the host of a little radio show called All In A Day on CBC Radio One, but in recent years he's moved in front of the camera and into our homes. He's currently the host of CBC News Ottawa at 6, and has been a guest host on other CBC shows like As It Happens, Sounds Like Canada and The Current. He's also a full-time Professor of Journalism at Carleton University. I'm not the jealous type, but those are some lucky students. It may also interest you to know that before his time at the CBC, Adrian also hosted a radio show on CKUT, the radio station for his Alma Mater, McGill University. The show was called Soul Perspective, and was dedicated specifically to discussing the issues faced by Black Canadians, such as racial inequality, racial profiling, and notably, homophobia in the black community. In this episode, Adrian and I catch up on lost time by discussing his past, present and future. We walk through his time at the CBC, the changes he's seen, and how and why he became a professor. We also talk about his recent appearance on the Canadaland podcast with Jesse Brown, where he took the time to give an inside report on the systemic racism he's seen in the media and at the CBC. You can listen to that episode here. For more of Adrian, you can follow him on Twitter. If you're in Ottawa, you can also see him every night at 6:00 on CBC News.Click Here For A Full TranscriptAlso a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Click to get a free trial.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 303Should You Transcribe Your Podcast?

In the 6 years since we started a podcast, there has been a total of one (1) request for a transcription of an episode. That was the Natasha Gargiulo episode back in 2018, and the person asking was hearing impaired. Natasha has a very large Canadian following, and I would have been more than happy to help out one of her followers. Sadly, at the time, I was largely clueless on how to do this. Today, I am happy to report that I know a little more on the topic. At Podcast Movement last month, the Live New Media show with ToddCochrane and Rob Greenlee had Andy Bowers, Rachael King and James Cridland on as guests, and the subject of transcription came up.I have to admit that after dabbling with the offerings from Headliner, Descript, and the Microsoft offering in my subscription, I was largely underwhelmed with its efficiency and honestly questioned its necessity. After a brief Twitter exchange, I pivoted positions; providing a transcription is the right thing to do for your show. There are some SEO benefits, and it adds a nice dimension to your website content. But these questions were still burning:-Why is it the responsibility of the content creator to provide them?-Why would I want someone reading the show when I want them listening to it? (I get paid in downloads, you know.)-Why should I pay for this? It’s expensive.I think I can answer these.Companies like Amazon, Google, Spotify, and Apple all have the technology to do this. But there is nothing in it for them. In fact, all it takes is a few mis-transcribed words to launch them into a lawsuit. As for people reading the show rather than downloading it, that might happen- and if the person doing so is hearing impaired, that should make you feel good. But here’s a side marketing bonus you probably didn’t consider: Bloggers and writers can easily cut and paste quotes from you and your guests, and credit your podcast. This recently happened to one of my older episodes, and it led to a few more followers. Sometimes it’s the things that you didn’t plan for that make it all worthwhile. As for justifying the price, that’s going to have to be a personal decision. It’s more than the subscription cost- it’s also spending the time after the transcription has been made to verify spelling and oddly pronounced words. It will likely take you even longer If your podcast is about something scientific or medical, or cities in Wales. As it stands now, some transcripts refer to me as Mad Kendall which I am considering adopting as my new wrestling name. And for networks who manage podcasts, between paying the humans reviewing the shows and paying for the subscriptions, the costs add up.One of the big reasons podcasters get involved with transcription is for the SEO. However, there are some who believe that simply attaching a transcription to the bottom of the episode page on your website will result in Google judging the page to be too long for ideal consumption. My thanks to James Cridland for the suggestion of finding a sponsor to assist with the payment of the podcast transcription costs. Your podcast is more than just pre-rolls and mid-rolls.Look for newer episodes of the Sound Off Podcast to contain transcriptions of each episode via Poddin.io. We decided to partner with Poddin because of its efficiency and its downloadable player, ease of use, and now with the ability to pull from your podcast’s RSS feed. Here are some of the other services we tried and largely liked. Choose wisely.Headliner, Descript, Microsoft, AWS, Trint ------Also a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Click to get a free trial.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 302Jeff Walker: Betting On Yourself

E

There's a lot of potential to make money, or lose it, in Las Vegas. In fact, that's pretty much the whole point of the city. Most people head down there to try their hand at the slots, play a few rounds of blackjack, take in some spectacular shows, or bet it all on a high-stakes poker match. But you don't see many people betting on the city itself.Jeff Walker is an exception to that rule. A former radio personality in Calgary, Winnipeg and Edmonton, Jeff has turned his voice and experience into a podcast all about Vegas. The Jeff Does Vegas podcast gives listeners a comprehensive guide to the city he fell in love with, from trip reports to restaurant reviews and attraction recommendations. It's become his most successful venture yet, and continues to grow to this day.In this episode, I speak to Jeff about his long and illustrious radio career, during which he found himself in quite a few "interesting" situations, as well as its rather abrupt end. We also talk about how he fell in love with Vegas, why he decided to start podcasting, how he built up his show, and the effect 2 years of COVID restrictions had on his show- A show which mainly revolved around him flying from Canada to Vegas 8 times a year. Yeah, it wasn't pretty. With that being said, now that he can head back to Sin City, the podcast is back with a vengeance. You can check it out on his website, and follow Jeff on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook for more updates.Click Here For A Full TranscriptAlso a thanks to our latest sponsor, The CHR Prep Service. Ep 301Mark Sutcliffe: Can You Dig It?

If you've ever taken a look at the other shows we offer on the Soundoff Podcast Network, this week's guest should sound quite familiar. Mark Sutcliffe is the host of the Digging Deep podcast, one of our largest shows, where he uses the knowledge gained from his lengthy and prolific career in the broadcast industry to give some seriously gripping interviews. There's a reason I said "In the broadcast industry" there, and not just "In broadcasting." And that's because Mark has seen just about every side of the industry. I can't really sum up his career any better than the About section on his personal website, so in Mark's own words:"I've been a daily newspaper columnist, a talk-radio host, a baseball play-by-play announcer, a Sunday-morning political TV host, and more. And I’ve been a proud volunteer, activist and community leader. I am a member of the Order of Ottawa and was named the United Way’s ambassador of the year."He's also been a management consultant, entrepreneur, and executive for various companies over the years. Needless to say, he's got the experience to dig deep on just about any topic. On this episode, we dig deep into Mark himself. He shares how he started in broadcasting before even graduating from high school, how he started his own business at the age of 19 and piloted it to huge success, and much more. We also talk about some of the biggest moments in history that have happened between the early 90's and now, many of which Mark reported on in various ways. And of course, there's lots of sports talk as well- you know I can't resist when I get a fellow fan on the show.If you want to hear more of Mark, you can listen to Digging Deep on the Soundoff Network, or check out Mark's personal website.Click Here For A Full TranscriptSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 300A Short History Of The Sound Off Podcast

E

We're finally at the big 300, an episode years in the making. As it's tradition for podcasters to do something special for milestones like this, I thought it would be the perfect time to look back on how exactly we got here: Where we started, the mistakes we've had to correct, the ways the show has evolved since 2016, and most importantly, the people who helped us get here, and continue to help today. And yes, of course that includes all our loyal listeners as well.If you are a returning listener, consider this episode a heartfelt thank you note, and also an anniversary gift of sorts. You'll hear mention of a huge number of other podcasts and podcasting resources for you to check out- or you could go back and listen to some of the old episodes we've recorded with these honored guests. The list is exceptionally long, and if there's anyone whose name was left out, I'm sincerely sorry. Please know that we deeply appreciate everyone who's helped with the show over the years, not just those who are mentioned in this episode. Ep 299Brady Kingsbury: Listen to the Bradio

E

Before starting this episode, I want you to imagine the program director of a radio station. You're probably picturing someone around my age, or maybe a bit older, depending on the station. A mature man or woman, with over a decade of experience in broadcasting, who can use that experience to run things smoothly and professionally. What you're probably not picturing is a 26-year-old Pro Tools aficionado and part-time radio host who's handling a station for the first time. But that's exactly the position Brady Kingsbury found himself in, and he nailed it.If nothing else, Brady's history in broadcasting is a testament to the value of playing to your strengths, while also doing everything you can to lengthen the list of things you can call "strengths." As he says in this episode, he's never been afraid to get tossed into the deep end. It just gives him a chance to show you how well he can swim.In this episode, I talk to Brady about how he went from working at a mall to programming Jack FM in London, Ontario in only 7 years. We dive into his love of audio editing, the process of learning Pro Tools, and the great friends he made along the way who helped jumpstart his career- including Jeff Lumby and Scott Tucker.Nowadays, you can listen to Brady on 96.7 CHYM in Kitchener, weekday mornings starting at 5am. Ep 298Geoff Allan: From Resorts to Rehearsals

E

You know Geoff Allan's voice. No, really, you do. If you've ever heard an ad for Burger King, Bud Light, or Hardee's, you've probably heard Geoff's dulcet tones announcing the return of the biggest burger you've ever seen. I've certainly heard Geoff enough to recognize that baritone anywhere- although I suppose I have an advantage. He is my second cousin, after all.As his cousin, I can tell you that Geoff has always had a fantastic voice. So, of course, it was only natural for him to finish school and get straight into... the hotel business. Yes, Geoff was a world-travelling hotel manager for most of his adult life. He'd always had a passion for radio and voiceover, but it wasn't until he was in his 50's, and in Dubai of all places, that he was able to hit the airwaves. Nowadays, he's been a professional voiceover artist for years, with training from industry veterans in L.A., Toronto, Montreal and Dubai. In this episode, we dive into Geoff's journey from suites to studios. We talk about how he found the opportunity to make such a dramatic career change, where it's taken him, where he'll go in the future, and how much he's learned from his time as a voiceover pro. We also do a hefty bit of reminiscing about the past. If nothing else, Geoff's story stands as a shining example that it's never too late to start doing what you love. For more of Geoff, or to hire him for your voiceover needs, check out his Personal Website or connect with him on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.Thanks to those who have supported the show!PromosuiteMegatraxClick Here For A Full TranscriptSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 297Chris Ash: Now Heard Around The World

E

It's not often that we hear a British accent on the radio in Canada. Especially outside of Toronto, or maybe Vancouver, most of our talent is home-grown. Chris Ash is a notable exception to that rule. Chris was born and raised in the UK, attending Staffordshire University and beginning his broadcasting career in Kettering, close to London. After only a few years, he made the journey to Canada, landing in Yorkton, Saskatchewan in 2016 and crushing it in Canadian broadcast ever since. But if you think Chris is just another disk jockey, you'd be wrong. We've talked a lot on this show about the evolving nature of the Broadcast industry, and how it needs to move forward with the times. Chris has been at the forefront of such evolution for his entire career. One of his main roles at Connect FM in Kettering was to manage their social media, and he did a bang-up job; their largest Facebook posts during his time at the station were reaching over 130,000 shares. Not bad for a city of only 63,000 people. While his career as a radio personality is about as successful as anyone could ask for, he hasn't been resting on his laurels. In more recent years, Chris has leveraged his penchant for internet notoriety to expand his portfolio. He now offers commissions for professional voiceover work on Fiverr, as well as continuing to advertise his background in social media and video production. In this episode, I speak to Chris about his journey from the UK to Saskatchewan, and eventually to Winnipeg, where he is now. You'll hear about his humble beginnings in Kettering, how he fell in love with broadcasting, and the way he honed his skills through years of hard work- along with a dash of pure charisma. Thanks to those who have supported the show!PromosuiteMegatraxClick Here For A Full TranscriptSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 295Ben McCully: Change Is Brewing

E

Ben McCully has one of the most interesting portfolios I, and probably you, have ever seen: Radio host, car salesman, pro wrestler, brewery tour manager. If that combo of careers doesn't have you hooked on this episode already, I don't know what will.Clearly, Ben has worn many hats throughout his career, which is fitting because he once lived in Medicine Hat, Alberta. We talk about his philosophy degree from University of King's College, how he managed his career path, what those transitions were like, and his travels across Canada as a radio host (he's worked in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Alberta).I know it's cliché to say this, but this episode really does have something for everyone- assuming you like beer, wrestling, radio, philosophy, or just really interesting stories. Thanks to those who have supported the show!PromosuiteMegatraxNEW! Ep 294Jim Lang: Live, Local and Social at The Region

Jim Lang is a renowned broadcaster who's worked all over Canada, often covering sports. You probably know him best from either Sportsnet Fan Radio 590, or his Toronto Argos coverage on AM 640. In this episode, we work our way through his broadcast history, from his humble beginnings as a radio intern all the way to his coverage of events like the Superbowl. If you're a sports fan, you'll love this one. Jim talks at length about the most stand-out moments of his sports career- the aftermath of Superbowl 42 and the ensuing chaos, the feeling of living in Montreal while the Canadiens were on a Stanley Cup run, and the privilege of becoming the radio voice of the Argos. This is a great episode for radio buffs as well, as Jim shares his story of moving from Halifax to Toronto and falling in love with the radio offerings the city had. He shares the exact moment he knew it was the career for him, the trepidation he felt the first time he stepped inside a big-city radio control room, and even some tips about making a voiceover sound punchier.Nowadays, Jim hosts his own morning show on 105.9 The Region. You can listen to him from Monday to Friday, 5:00am to 10:00am. BJ Shea is the morning show host at the legendary KISW in Seattle. The BJ and Migs show has anchored the station since 2005; if you aren't familiar with KISW, it's the famous underground and later grunge station that's been home to great DJ personalities such as Bob Rivers, Howard Stern, Gary Crow, Mike West, and more.We met BJ a few times at places like the Conclave and Dave Anthony's Morning Show Bootcamp where he would mentor, share and encourage young talent.BJ also appears as a co-host of Geek Nation, a geek-centric podcast about all things nerdy, from movies and television to tech and comics. Check out an episode of this podcast linked below, where BJ reviews the latest comics from Spiderman, Oblivion Song, and Fantastic Four, and deep dives into a crazy new SyFy show. Ep 292A Matt Countdown: The Top 10 Reasons Your Podcast Isn't Working

E

The last few weeks, I've been doing a lot of podcast housekeeping- pitching sponsors, and reviewing the stats, and thinking about what's next for the Sound Off Podcast. As it turns out, it's going to be more of the same, which is a good thing. One of the biggest questions I get asked is: "Why is my show doing better?" Here are some of the conclusions that often come up. Number 10: No Video StrategyHave a video strategy that includes Youtube. That's it. That's number 10.Number 9: You Are ImpatientDid you know that it takes three years to build an audience? It’s true, because Dave Jackson, who has been podcasting since 2004, told me so. Even if you have a big audience now with your podcast, because you are named Kim Kardashian – it is still going to take you three years to find that podcast audience. I see this all the time with actors, Youtubers and Instagrammers: They get a big audience out of the gate, and then the audience drops off because those initial people prefer to interact with the star on Youtube or Instagram or TV. But if they stick to it, over the course of three years, a true podcast audience will develop. So if you want to start a podcast, give yourself a lot of runway. Like three years worth.Number 8: You Thought It Would Be EasyWanna know what’s easy? Doing the midday show on a music station. You talk for a few minutes an hour, and all the elements are handed to you. Produced commercials, traffic and weather together, the music and promos… You have about 56 minutes of the hour taken care of. That’s why you hear the same midday person across many markets now. In podcasting – you don’t have any of that. You have to build most of it from scratch. You will need to produce all the necessary elements including the commercials (if you have any), the intro, the extro, and the music beds. You need to do some show research, show prep, writing, you need to produce the audio and make it sound listenable, and then after you launch it… you’ll need to market the show.Number 7: Your Show Is Not EverywhereI can’t tell you the number of podcasts I review who are missing from iHeart or Stitcher. And with countries like India offering a gateway to 1.4 billion people, it might be a good idea to be on Gaana or Jio Savaan. Think of India as the same size as the United States… with an additional billion people. Yeah you want in on that. And don’t forget to submit your show to Tune In… it works well with the smart speakers. Don’t be like a radio company that takes its stations off Tune In to be on an app only available in the US. That’s stupid. And finally don’t let your podcast host provider submit the show to Apple or Spotify for you. Do it yourself. It takes five minutes, and it’s a pain in the ass to rescue the show later should you have to move. You always want to keep your stats with you, not with someone else.Number 6: You Don't Release Episodes ConsistentlyIronic, I know, because I didn’t release an episode on time last week. But you need to be consistent with your releases. Those in radio know this better than any other, and it’s why radio people get famous. They are reliable and always there on time. What radio and TV people are doing is creating the consistency that allows for listeners to get in the habit of consuming their media. So, if you think you are going to release episodes whenever you want, and expect people to download it when you want them to? Not happening.Mondays and Tuesdays are great days to get episodes out. Early in the week, people believe they have more time to plan their life out. By Thursday they are swamped. You can still release your episode on a Thursday or Friday – but you’ll have to market through a weekend when attention spans are on neutral. Best of luck with that. And for those of you who do the “seasons” thing- unless there is someone honestly pacing the floor waiting for the new season of your podcast- don’t. Taking a random break is tantamount to pulling the plug on a bath and letting the water run out.We shifted to consistent releases after I had a conversation with Aaron Mahnke, who has a number of hit podcasts, including Lore. He gave a really compelling argument to releasing your show on time, and in the end it's about respect for the listener and their time. When we shifted to consistent releases, we saw a 20% jump in our audience numbers. If you show the listener respect they will show it back to you.Number 5: Your Podcast Looks Like Shit In The AppFor the life of me, I don’t know why people put episode numbers in the title field of their podcast. I think they do it because Joe Rogan does it. There are ways to put to the episode number in there without using the title field. People are not searching for a show called Episode. I also see some people put the show title of the podcast where the episode title is supposed to go, and they think they are gaming the SEO gods, and they aren’t. They're making a mess of the podcast. I wanted to listen to a podcast the other day in

In this episode, we talk Amanda's journey through the industry (including receiving military training before working as a journalist in Afghanistan), as well as her thoughts on how Canadian broadcasting could evolve. There are University dissertations shorter than Amanda's resume, so for brevity's sake, she is currently: Director of Talk & Talent at AM640 in Toronto, entrepreneur, freelance podcast consultant herself, author of a best-selling book, and a Journalism instructor at both Ryerson University and Seneca College.Amanda and I also go deep on podcasting and discuss Canada feeling behind terms of podcasting, but Amanda shares some excellent ideas about how we can elevate quickly. Will Nash is the afternoon drive host for Fresh 93.1 in Barrie, Ontario, as well as the midday host on Energy 95.3 in Hamilton and Toronto. He's a radio veteran who's been all over Ontario, and has dozens of celebrity interviews under his belt- but his career didn't exactly start out that way.In this episode, I talk to him about working on street teams, moving to a small town in northern Alberta for his first full on-air gig, his transition to a bigger stage in Toronto, and all the shuffling around that eventually brought him to the position he's in now. Will tells me about his struggle to come to terms with being gay, which as you might imagine, was quite the challenge as an on-air personality in Peace River, Alberta. He also shares his experiences teaching Radio Broadcasting at Mohawk College, giving us some insight into the changes the radio industry has gone through and the way schools have adapted for the future. Imperfectly Kind is the name of Julie Adam's first book. The President of Rogers Sports & Media had a unique pandemic experience that she shared with us and led her to write this book.In this episode, Julie and I catch up after nearly 4 years between recording podcast episodes. We spoke about baseball in the last episode and it came up again this time in a couple of places. While I normally would love to ask a zillion questions about the future of radio, I wanted to stay close to the theme of her book because the broadcast business could use a little more kindness. We also spoke about identifying who your competition is and the benefits of embracing them. You can order Julie's book here in Canada. Ep 284Mary Anne Ivison: The Power of The Pivot

A few times a year, the radio grim reaper makes its rounds and kills off another round of talented people. Depending on the sociopathic behaviour of the company who executes the plan, it is described as "dislocation" or "restructuring". To those that are on the receiving end, it feels more like a mob-hit. Mary Anne Ivison was let go in February of 2021, and spent the rest of the year pivoting away from the profession that was her livelihood for 12 years. In this episode, you will hear how the Tilbury, Ontario native got her start in radio, listened to Dave and Chuck the Freak in Windsor and later WRIF across the river. Ryan Jespersen is one of the great broadcast to podcast success stories. After being relieved from the coveted 9 to noon position at the venerable 630 CHED in Edmonton last year, Ryan hatched a plan to move his audience from terrestrial to digital, and at the same time fill a need for real talk in the digital space. In this episode, you will hear how Ryan got into radio i(and later TV) n Red Deer, Alberta, moved north to Edmonton where he hosted Breakfast television and eventually on to Corus owned 630 CHED. We spoke about Alberta politics and how it compared to when I was there in 1990's when Ralph Klein's Conservatives held a 40+ year stranglehold on the province - and how it devolved. We also talked about how he monetizes the show, how he moved people to digital, and what the goals of the show are in the future. You can find more about Real Talk with Ryan Jespersen on our episode page.We also spoke about my friend Christian Zyp who was a guest on the Sound Off Podcast a few months ago. Ep 275Mike Goral: Excessive Talking

Mike Goral is someone I have only met once, haven't seen in 7 years but we have a long track record of working together. Long before the pandemic taught us to work apart, Mike and I, along with Jamie Watson and Evan Surminski would all collaborate to make audio magic in radio. Since then, all four of us have continued on creative paths that involve voiceover. Albeit, Evan produces still, and Matt started a podcast company. Mike's career in entertainment began at as a part-time assistant at Energy 108 under the guidance of Scot Turner. After several years as a full-time commercial producer and getting to work with amazing voiceover talent like the late Bumper Morgan and Dude Walker, Mike became a voice actor himself. In this episode, you'll hear us share some voice and imaging tips for radio and beyond. In this episode, you will hear why Montana chose a career in broadcasting and how she fulfils her other passions like sport and politics. Her broadcast career has gone from NAIT, to the streets of Edmonton, to Dawson Creek and now to Saskatoon. We also covered how she manages to keep her journalism work positive. We also talked about how she has to overcome harassment on the job, and perceived journalistic imbalances and misconceptions because of her family name. Ep 273Rob Braide: Broadcaster, Musicologist, Charcutier, Cook and Sometimes Baker

E

There's about a dozen people I know where if I sit down for a long conversation with them, I am going to come away infinitely smarter and with lots to think about. Rob Braide has always been on that hit list. Whether we were having a drink or eating some of his wonderful cooking, or listening to his latest musical find, I was going to come away with more.In this episode you are going to hear a lot about Montreal and CHOM from the 1970's, his move from CHOM as program director to General manager of CJAD/FM96 in 1986, and CHOM's eventual return under his supervision in 2002. We talk about how French and English co-existed on CHOM in the 70's... until it didn't, why that was and the amazing unintended consequences of that government decision that shaped Francophone radio and culture in Quebec. We also talked about the unique musical sound of Montreal, why there is so much traffic, and the contributions the National Music Centre in Calgary is making to all Canadians. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 272Rob Walch: Putting Podcast Into Perspective

Rob Walch is the VP of Podcast Relations at Libsyn. He made an appearance on our show back in 2018, and we were long overdue to have him back given the changing nature of the podcast world. During Rob's session at Podcast Movement in August, he manoeuvred his way through his presentation to debunk many of the marketing myths that are propelled across the internet. Myths like Rating and Reviewing the podcast will help it be discovered, and that there are over two million podcasts. (While true - only 325,000 are active)In this episode you will hear Rob debunk myths and put podcasting into perspective. Did you know the Super Bowl generates as much money in a day as the Podcast Industry does in a year? And yes, having a presence on YouTube will help your podcast get discovered. You're also likely doing better than you think in regards to your podcast's performance. We also go deep on podcast apps, podcast websites and talk about Apple's plans for ios in the future. Rob knows Apple products as he hosts Today in iOS.Rob host The Feed along with Elsie Escobar and it's one of the podcasts I listen to every other week to keep my view of the podcast industry in perspective. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 271Tara Sands: A Voice For Everything

Tara Sands was an imaging voice for a radio station I was programming in my radio days. It always exciting to hire new voice talent to put a fresh sound to your station. Her work extends well beyond FM, into some of the things you might hear like cartoons and commercials, but also in Anime, Audiobooks and now Podcast. If there's audio to be recorded, she is likely recording it.In this episode, you will hear about Tara's teenage years in New Jersey where she took in a few Bruce Springsteen concerts and would take trips to New York to perform in theatre. We also spoke about the joyful consequences of popularity when you are a voice of Bulbasaur on the popular cartoon Pokemon. There's a whole world of celebrity conventions and your social media changes forever. We also talked at length about the pandemic and its affects on the work that she does. For instance, Tara has not visited a studio since March 2020 and made significant upgrades to her studio in order to make it "hard wired" for internet connectivity and upgraded for speed. Voiceover talent will especially love this deep dive into her work life and career. There''s an awful lot of things that I wanted to ask after the interview was over - but that's what the episode page is for. If your radio station would like to have Tara as an imaging voice, please reach out to her via her webpage.Check out all of Tara's credits in the Internet Movie Database. And Tara's podcast credits here on Podchaser. She genuinely loves radio. In this episode, you will hear how much she loves radio: Everything from its ability to connect whether it is voicetracked or live; in a disaster or at 5 in the morning. We also talk about her venture into voiceover where she records audiobooks and radio ads for clients. Ep 269September: The Fall of Radio

September is an exciting month that comes complete with the hopes and promise of a new year. I took some time to hang with family recently and take what is normally a slow time of the podcast year to unwind a bit. I took some radio notes and read a few things and am sharing what came bubbling up. Think of it as some sort of lame meditation. In this episode, you'll hear why the word retirement pops up when long time staff depart a station, are talent being properly compensated for their social media activity, National Radio Day is stupid and needs initiative, and our podcast was reviewed by Phil Edmonds and we thought it was awesome to be recommended. We al so made mention of Perry Michael Simon's piece in All Access.com. Click here to read it. I also made mention that you could sign up for the newsletter. You can do that here. http://eepurl.com/dBsIa1And the PM21 notes will be forthcoming in the next few days. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
