368 - Low Cost (Yet Effective) Marketing Ideas For Small Business With Jasky Singh From K2AV

Effective marketing doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, some of the best marketing ideas I’ve seen to help small businesses grow, have been incredibly cheap. Sometimes all they cost is a little effort on behalf of the owner. Jasky Singh of K2 Audio Visual in Western Australia (a business that installs state-of-the-art audio visual technology into homes and offices), has embraced low cost marketing in a big way … and it’s working. Here’s an email he sent me a few weeks ago: Hey Timbo … I'm one of those listeners that have been with you since the early days. I’m a big fan of your show. I’d love to be a guest on one of your shows if that's of value to you. As I'm someone who directly applied tips and tricks from your episodes to take our business (K2AV) from a $500 investment to $15M in sales in <5 years. Just thought I'd put it out there. No stress if it isn't something that works for you mate. Keep up the great work :) So I asked Jasky to send me a list of the ideas he’s specifically implemented. He did and it’s a ripper. And that’s what we’re going to work our way through in today’s episode of your favourite marketing podcast. BTW, you’ll find Jasky’s complete list of low cost marketing ideas further down this page.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: How to increase your business’s social media engagement How to make affordable marketing videos fast And we revisit a past episode where I chatted with a very old school marketer   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Jasky Singh of K2AV: Find a way to enjoy your marketing. I’m probably preaching to the converted here, however, if you are finding marketing a struggle, then simply choose one aspect of it that you actually don’t mind and focus on it. That might be writing some blog posts, answering some FAQs, scheduling time to network or have lunch with some clients … whatever it is, just do it.  Curating the best ideas from his newsletter and turning it into a hard copy book. I’m doing this at the moment for my What Have You Got To Lose segment … I figure I’m already writing these ideas up as blog posts each week, and recording them as a segment in my show, so why not repurpose this existing content into a book?  Make as many phone calls to prospects and clients a day as you can. In fact, can I set you a challenge? Starting tomorrow, I want you to call 10 prospects or existing clients per day for 10 days - then I want you to email me with the results - good, bad or indifferent. Go! Here’s the complete list of Jasky’s business beliefs and marketing strategies that are helping him grow a business he loves: Business Beliefs: Be on the attack always. We’ve consistently fostered the mindset to search and keep looking for work/new clients instead of having an inbound strategy do the job for us. This has been the most important. Bring value up-front, have enough in the value bank before going in for the ask. Early on, not applying this approach tarnished our reputation with a few clients and had we applied this approach it would have lead to much greater outcomes. Niche is always better than broad, the more specific, the more pinpointed you can be when it comes to an audience, strategy, a pain point – the better the results. Be the best. This is the greatest marketing on its own. Low Cost Marketing Ideas For Small Business: A weekly newsletter providing tips, tricks, and thought provoking ideas to educators – with 2,000+ subscribers, this has opened many doors without ever asking for the sale. Compiling the best of the above newsletter and turning that into a physical book which we distributed to get into the door of clients – screenshot attached. Developing win-win relationships with suppliers, as we rarely ever do “sales” or “discounts” as that doesn’t work with our brand. We use our suppliers and negotiate deals through them that provide a win win scenario for them and our potential client, and we get to sit in between as the exclusive provider for a deal. Our latest campaign “Smart Board Buy Back” was an example of this which lead to $50,000 worth of additional sales. Before any presentation or pitch, we take a potential client for a visit to the work done for an existing client – the greatest sales pitch is to have an existing client in the same industry do the selling on your behalf. Better headlines for emails, better copywriting for marketing  campaigns and online ads. Using the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) and WIIFT (What’s in it for them) strategies. Currently – Facebook video with niche targeting has been quite powerful to generate leads.   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: D

367 - Genius product launch ideas (including getting featured in The Oscars) with Kara Lauder from The Kader Boot Co.

Kara Lauder is a mum of one (soon to be two), lives in The Pilbara, works in the kmines and is the proud founder of Thea Kader Boot Co … and boy oh boy, the product launch strategies she’s put in place to ensure her business succeeds are nothing short of genius. From the quality of her boots, to implementing a far-reaching marketing ideas that include a clever use of social influencers, video, social media (particularly Instagram), selling at local markets and plenty more. She’s also very clear on what her brand stands for, which impacts what she will and won't get involved with.   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Kara Lauder of The Kader Boot Co. : Lay the right foundations to ensure you build a tribe - Whether you're just launching your business, or if you’ve been in business for a while, be sure to get in place some solid marketing activities that will have your people standing up and taking notice. Strategic collaborations - We’ve talked about this before, and there’s a fantastic webinar inside the Forum about how to establish profitable partnerships. BUt Kara’s advice about teaming up with others that you work well with is excellent. And I love how she reaches out to them using Instagram! Invest the necessary time & money - I loved Kara’s willingness to head over to the Oscars or down to Perth (at the last minute!) in order to take advantage of these amazing opportunities that come her way. You gotta spend time and money to make it, right?   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: A great project management tool to make your teams more efficient A simple idea to improve the friendliness of your website And we revisit a past episode in which we caught up with Gelato Messina’s owner Declan Lee     Links & Resources mentioned: Kader Boot Co. on Instagram Kade Boot Co. on Facebook Kader Boot Co. website (in development at time of posting) Photographer Paul Pichugin’s website (thanks for the intro to Kara :) Interview with Gelato Messina’s Declan Lee WHYGTL blog post LJGAWLE blog post   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 366 - UGG Boot’s founder Brian Smith shares how this iconic brand began.

The iconic UGG Boot brand was founded by surfer Brian Smith in 1978 - it’s now a billion-dollar brand, but don’t be fooled … the early days were tough, until Brian made one small pivot. We cover plenty of ground in this chat including:  How to build a brand that connects  The importance of focussing on niches  The power of listening to your customers  He even gets a little woo-woo on us  Plus Brian shares the moment when UGG Boots went from a struggling footwearbusiness run by a couple of salty surfers, to something so much greater - in fact, it’s now a multi-billion dollar brand, although Brian no longer has anything to do with it. I touch more on that after the interview.   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Brian Smith, founder of UGG Boots: “You can’t give birth to adults” - this applies not only to the growing of a business, but also the growing of a marketing strategy. Too many business owners have an expectation that the minute they launch a marketing initiative whether it be a podcast or an advertising campaign or whatever, that it must generate immediate ROI. Be patient! Niche down - Instead of going national with the successful surfer advertising campaign, I love how Brian chose to identify other niches and embed the UGG Brand that way. When it comes to creative marketing concepts, one size doesn’t fit all, so it’s worth spending quality time getting your message right for each niche. Have a guiding instinct - for Brian goosebumps are his way of knowing whether something is right or wrong. For me, I get this feeling deep within my gut. The challenge is to honour it. To actually have the courage to listen to it. That’s the hard part!   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Why & how to use screen capture technology How to use holidays to sell more And we revisit a past episode in which I spoke with a high-performance coach about, well, high performance!   Links & Resources mentioned: Brian Smith’s personal site UGG Boot’s website How to use screen capture technology How to increase sales during the holidays   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 365 - 5 Game-Changing Selling Tips To Close More Deals With Sales Expert Nicholas Lynch

Does selling freak you out? Well, you’re not alone. It used to freak me out until I spoke with sales expert Nicholas Lynch of Nicholas Lynch Real Estate, who shares 5 keys to closing every sale. And boy oh boy, they're not what I expected! Now I actually met Nicholas through one of my son’s who’s best mates with his son. I also used Nicholas to sell a house for me about a year ago. The guy is a sales machine. He loves everything about selling. So if you struggle with this part of your business (and many business owners and employees do), then you are absolutely going to love the 5 key selling tips he shares that all but guarantee you closing the sale each and every time. You know one of Nicholas’s mantras is A.B.C. - Always Be Closing!   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Nicholas Lynch of Nicholas Lynch Real Estate: His doors analogy - This is such a great way to visualise the close. The key here is to identify what each door is in the closing process, then make sure you go through them in the order they were intended, closing each one as you go. Feel / Felt / Found - What a great way to bring prospects around to your way of thinking, by showing empathy. It’s also a simple structure for story-telling which we talk a lot about on this show. Have the right intention - Whilst I loved all of Nicholas’s 5 keys to nailing the sale, I particularly loved #2, which was all about having the right intention. I honour this one a lot when speaking from stage, recording this show, and pretty much any time I’m writing a proposal for a client.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: How a maglog can help you sell more (you’ll find an example here as well) How to use social proof to build confidence with your prospects Plus we revisit a past episode with Ant Morell of Bounce   Links & Resources mentioned: Nicholas Lynch Real Estate’s website Interview with Ant Morell of indoor playground sensation Bouse   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 364 - Digital Nomad Mark Phillips lives in a tent and runs a six-figure business

Mark Phillips infuriates me. He calls himself a digital nomad, running six-figure business (cheekily called Business In Barefeet) as he and his wife Linda, travel the world. He has no fixed address, lives in a tent and stays in one place no longer than a week or so. He did this interview from his ‘office’, which involved sitting on the beach overlooking the Great Barrier Reef. Some of you would say they’re livin’ the la vita loca .. others of you probably couldn’t think of anything worse. Either way, join me as we find out why and how to become a digital nomad! Listen in as we discuss: Why they did it? What it’s like to run a serious business literally from a beach or the side of the road! How they work hard at building trust How much the world has changed in order for such a nomadic lifestyle to be successful And so much more Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Mark Phillips of Business In Barefeet: “If your environment isn’t working for you, then find a new environment.” Now that doesn't mean you have to hit the road like Mark and his wife have … but at least think about where else you can do business. For me, I have certain places that I go when I want to be creative, and other places where I go if I just need to get shit done. More businesses need to embrace new ways of communicating with their clients. If you’re not at the very least familiar with Whatsapp, Voxer, Skype (to name a few) then you’re behind the 8-ball. It doesn’t mean you have to use them all, but at least make an informed decision not to use them! Always be on the lookout for ways to build trust with your clients. Mark and his wife have to work particularly hard at this given they have no fixed address, but as a business owner it’s good practice for you to constantly ask yourself what can you be doing to build more trust.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: How to create awesome infographics How to create free webpages thanks to Google A past episode in which I chat with one of my most inspiring guests yet   Links & Resources mentioned: Mark’s website - Business In Barefeet Mark on Twitter Mark on Facebook How to create awesome infographics How to create free webpages thanks to Google Interview with Glenn Azar from The Adventure Professionals   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 363 - How to build an empire by identifying a gap in the market with Kate Morris of Adore Beauty

Kate Morris was selling make-up at the Clarins counter in a large department store. It was there she identified a rather large gap in the market. She filled that gap with a business called Adore Beauty - laying the foundation for Australia’s largest online retailer of beauty products.   We cover a lot of ground as Kate explains: How she’s built this empire Why she sold part of it to Australia’s biggest supermarket brand, then bought it back again Why opening a bricks and mortar store was the wrong move Why ensuring the Adore Beauty brand doesn’t shine to bright   Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Kate Morris of Adore Beauty: What do we want to be in the lives of our customers? This is a great question to ask as you plan your marketing strategy. Have the courage to fail. I hear this time and time again from successful business owners. The failures are where the lessons live. Just fail quickly and move on! Having a full time blogger on staff. Great writers don’t come cheaply, so this idea is of course for businesses over a certain. That said, at least have a writer you can call on when a brochure or blog or sales letter needs to be written.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways shares another productivity tool to make your business life a whole lot easier. I share another low cost marketing idea that’ll have your staff jumping out of their pants! And we go back into the vault, revisiting a chat I had with Gold Medal Olympian Steven Bradbury.   Links & Resources mentioned: Adore Beauty website Interview with Scott Kilmartin of Grace the Vintage Ice Cream Truck fame Productivity tool - DialPad How to keep your employees happy   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 362- How Barefoot Cinema’s first year was a huge success with founder Julian Grant

I love a new idea that’s right for it’s time. I love it even more if it involves food, beer and movies. And I especially love it when it’s just down the road from my holiday house. Today’s successful business owner ticks every one of those boxes. Julian Grant is the Founder of Barefoot Cinemas, a new outdoor-cinema concept that launched over Summer in Victoria. In fact, it launched down the road from my holiday house in a seaside village called Portsea. So I’m a little bit biased, as I absolutely love Julian’s business idea, as it brought a whole new level of fun to the area. Barefoot Cinema is an outdoor cinema concept set in a national park, on a cliff top overlooking a beautiful beach and Port Phillip Bay. There’s food trucks, a bar, fairy lights dangling from all the trees, live music ...oh, and there’s also a large cinema-sized screen and sound system. Being there is like being on the set of a Jack Johnson video. What I also love about the Barefoot Cinema concept is that by day Julian is a young, whipper-snapper solicitor, so this is a side hustle. One which (given the success he had in year one) may well become his full time focus very quickly as he starts a national expansion.   My Top 3 Attention Grabbers From My Chat With Barefoot Cinema’s Julian Grant: Brand clarity. I love how Julian could so easily articulate exactly what the Barefoot Cinema brand stands for. If you can’t do that for your business, then I strongly suggest you do. Need some help, join the Small Business Big Marketing Club. Over-delivering. I love how Julian wasn’t willing to cut corners. Whilst this impacted on his margins in year one, it’s meant that he has a bunch of sponsors who loved what they were involved with, and a product offering that is highly regarded. Year 2 is going to be so much easier. Behind-the-scenes social media posts. I know many of you think you have nothing interesting to share on social media. If that’s you, then think about some behind-the-scenes shots and stories. They work a treat. I’ve just started to broadcast my raw interviews on Facebook Live and the engagement has been fantastic.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, you’ll also discover: How to write great marketing headlines Why you should never eat alone Insights from a past interview with Rowdy McLean   Links & Resources mentioned: Barefoot Cinema’s website Interview with Play A Bigger Game’s Rowdy McLean How to write better marketing headlines Why and how to stop eating alone   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 361 - How this side hustle now turns over $10M with TinyMe’s Mike Wilson.

Hands up who’s got a side hustle. Keep your hand up if you'd like your side hustle to turn into a multi-million dollar business. And keep your hand up if you’re doing something about it. Today’s guest acted on his successful side hustle and it’s now turning over close to ten million bucks a year. Mike Wilson is the Founder of TinyMe, which he calls “the world’s cutest and bestest online shop of personalised products for kids”. Cute it maybe, but TinyMe is now generating some serious income, employs 65 staff in the peak seasons, and does 95% of it’s manufacturing in Australia. Unheard of!   My Top 3 Attention Grabbers From My Chat With TinyMe’s Mike Wilson were: Personalisation. This is just going to become a bigger and bigger part of doing business. Be sure to take a moment to think about what you can personalise in your business - everything from your email marketing to product design to your invoicing. Get a side hustle. Mike had a few before TinyMe took off. I’ve got some Members of The Small Business Big Marketing Club who have side hustles generating a couple of grand a month. Mike’s obsessions with systems. This is an area that I’ve avoided pretty much forever. However, just in the last few week’s I’ve had my Marketing VA document all the things I do in my business, literally step-by-step, and upload them to SystemHUB, which is basically a place in the cloud where you can keep all your processes, systems and SOPs.   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, you’ll also discover: How you can confidently forget all your passwords except one How to turn your email signature into a sales machine How an ascending transaction model is the key to selling high-priced items   Links & Resources mentioned: TinyMe website How to forget all your passwords except one How to turn your email signature into a sales machine Interview with Lara Hopkins from Mon Purse SystemHUB - a home for your business processes, checklists & SOPs   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 360 - A ridiculously simple idea brought tough-guy Glenn Azar back from the brink of bankruptcy.

Today’s guest, Glenn Azar from the Adventure Professionals has some very harsh but fair advice for us all. He says, “We’re all trying to get to death as safely as possible!” So, if you’re a risk averse business owner, then I think you’re going to love the advice he has to share. Like many successful entrepreneurs, Glenn has taken years to become an overnight success - losing all his money and his marriage along the way. He’s walked the Kokoda Trail more times than I’ve had hot breakfasts, and one of his daughters is the youngest Australian to ever successfully climb Everest. He absolutely loves what he does, has a huge respect for the power of marketing … and strongly believes that we should all be taking more risks instead of making our way safely to death! You’ll be that little bit better off for listening as Glenn shares: How it took years to become an overnight success An inspiring story of building a business he loves Why risk-taking is mission critical to living a life you love How he uses content marketing to grow his business How Facebook Live is a game-changer How his daughter’s book generates solid leads for his business A simple way to rebuild if the shi* hits the fan   But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, you’ll also discover: How to surprise and reward your loyal customers How to build a website in less than 5-minutes And we go deep into the archives revisiting a chat I had with expert copywriter Joanna Wiebe   Links & Resources mentioned: The Adventure Professionals Glenn’s coaching website Alyssa Azar’s speaker website 3-steps to surprising your loyal customers How to create a personal website in less than 5-minutes 25 ways to surprise loyal customers   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 359 - Disruptive business Gelato Messina is successfully breaking all the rules.

Gelato Messina shouldn’t be successful. It’s lives and breathes one very challenging core value. It pumps the in-store music so loud that you can’t hear yourself order. And it does collaborations that would appear completely off-brand. That said, Gelato Messina is killing it! Today’s highly successful and disruptive business owner shares: How Gelato Messina disrupts the gelato market Why a collaboration with Tim Tam worked Why having ONE core value is all you need How he is constantly applying his background as a music festival promoter Why he has no set rules for doing business   Here’s my Top 5 Attention Grabbers from the chat with Gelato Messina’s Declan Lee: The Gelato Messina Honesty policy. In fact, the idea of having and absolutely living the one core value throughout every part of the business is admirable. Especially during my years in corporate I’d come across far too many businesses that paid only lip service to 4, 5 maybe even 6 core values that were nothing more than motherhood statements. Declan’s unwavering belief in his product. It seems obvious that all business owners should have this, however, it’s not always the case. What was quite amazing was that this belief clearly trickles down to all the staff who (from what I observed) were extremely proud to be serving it up. No set rules about doing business. Theoretically, a cool, independant brand like Gelato Messina shouldn’t collaborate with a mass band like Tim Tam, but they did and it’s worked! Declan’s openness to all opportunities. It felt like he’s always looking for a reason to say YES and not NO. Honesty with customers. You know that saying “The customer's always right”? Well, maybe they’re not. Maybe sometimes we need to have honest conversations with customers that are causing our staff or our business pain. Clearly Declan thinks so.   Links & Resources mentioned: Gelato Messina Welcome Email blog post 21 examples of welcome emails Pocket blog post Pocket Tom O’Toole interview   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. 357 - How an ascending transaction model was the game-changer for The Healthy Gut's Rebecca Coomes

Like so many businesses, Rebecca Coomes built her business out of a pain point that she was experiencing herself. Her particular pain point – a pain in the gut! Rebecca Coomes is the founder of The Healthy Gut, where she writes cookbooks and recipes for sufferers of a chronic illness called SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)which is one of the leading causes of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). She is a marketing consultant by day, but that is quickly taking a back seat to her new business, in which she’s become the world’s leading patient expert on SIBO! I saw Rebecca speak at a KPI event and she absolutely blew me away. Rebecca’s personal journey is interesting in itself, but wait until you hear how two simple marketing strategies have sky-rocketed her business - one’s called the Ascending Transaction Model, and the other one? Good old helpful marketing. Listen in as we cover some serious marketing ground including: How Rebecca overcame 36 years of chronic illness and unhelpful doctors to start not one but two businesses How she saw an opportunity in the lack of cookbooks for her very strict diet and used her marketing savvy to provide a solution How she went from being a marketing consultant to a world-leading patient expert on SIBO How her passion for cooking has led to changing people's lives with her content The struggles of self-publishing books, and spreading the word via her website and social media How building strong relationships with key influencers in your field can help get you ahead The importance of networking and attending conferences to make connections and spread your brand How she gets her foot in the door, with customers and experts alike How the combination of an ascending transaction model and the creation of helpful content has grown her business exponentially But that's not all. In this episode of your favourite marketing podcast: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont drops in to share another productivity tool to make your business life infinitely easier. 356 - Huxtaburger's Daniel Wilson on how sharing your knowledge can build you a tribe.

Daniel Wilson is a chef and co-founder of Huxtaburger, my favourite burger joint (everything in moderation , of course ;0). Huxtaburger is a very understated burger brand that’s in 5 quality locations around my hometown of Melbourne. A mighty fine Huxtaburger There’s a couple of things I love about the Huxtaburger brand - one is in its marketing. Specifically, Daniel has written a recipe book that step-by-step explains exactly how to make the world’s best burger. So, in theory, you could follow all his instructions and go in to direct competition. In theory. Listen in as we cover some serious marketing ground including: What makes Huxtaburger more than just another burger joint How Daniel and his friends went from working as chefs to opening their own restaurant Daniel's personal philosophy of doing what you love - whether that's cooking food you love or using your passions otherwise How Huxtaburger's name and classic menu came to be The unique challenges and benefits of starting a franchise How Huxtaburger's new brand refresh focuses the company on diversity Why Daniel wrote a book, The Huxtaburger Book, with the secrets to making a perfect burger The reason your brand experience is so important to creating an emotional attachment with customers But that’s not all. 352 - Airbnb Used These Unique Tiny Houses to Advertise Their Business

Joep Pennartz started Shacky out of a desire to create opportunities for a digital detox. To look out the window, listen to birds and take a deep, long breath. After a particularly hectic period in his life, he and his girlfriend managed a getaway in a little place that had no mobile service, and just two days in this environment felt like a whole month's worth of relaxation. As time went on he realised that this type of a holiday was a growing need for many people who need to unwind and go on a digital detox. This lead to the start of  the Shacky adventure. This is a story of innovation (which Joep has a Masters degree in), crowdfunding and just some really clever marketing ideas. I think you’re going to love this chat, Joep's passion for his business and the way in which he has gone about building it is truly inspiring. We cover a tonne of marketing ground including: JOMO (the joy of missing out) a term Joep likes to use when promoting these beautiful tiny houses Some nice 1 percenters that Joep has done to build and promote Shacky A great PR hack How Air BnB used the Shakies to help build their brand Also in this episode of your favourite marketing podcast ... It's 8-hours full of solid content. If you're interested here's a 50% discount on the ticket price.   Here are my top 3 learnings from attending the event: Matthew Michalewicz a previous guest on the show presented on Pitching - His key take away was the “Name, same, different” philosophy. eg. My name is Tim Reid, I’m like a marketing consultant but I’m different in that I share my knowledge from stage and a podcast. How can you use that philosophy in your business? Rebecca Coomes - an ex-marketing consultant who’d made a decision that her true passion is helping people overcome a particular gut problem called SIBO (that she also suffered from) - she’s now a leading expert in this area and has an incredible product eco-system including books, courses, coaching, live events. I’m actually going to get her on an upcoming episode soon. Hair Salon Coach Lisa Conway talked about how it’s OK to be yourself as you build into becoming a key person of influence in your industry. 351 - All your podcast questions answered by Timbo

I started podcasting way back in 2010 and have now released more than 350 episodes. I thought it was high time that I shared a few of the lessons I've learnt along the way by answering your questions about podcasting. In this episode of Australia's favourite marketing podcast : I share my thoughts and answer your questions on all things podcasting I share another low cost marketing idea in What Have You Got To Lose? Today I share 3 steps to getting your emails opened by the right people! And we go back into the Small Business Big Marketing vault, revisiting a past episode in which we caught up with the maker of America’s best sandwich! To find out what you really wanted to know about podcasting, I asked!. I received some excellent questions from both Small Business Big Marketing Forum Members and The Small Business Big Marketing Facebook page. SIDE NOTE: There's a whole section inside the Small Business Big Marketing Forum dedicated to Podcasting. Check out the forum here. It's only $67 a month and if you can't make that back plus multiples more than I am doing something wrong. I kick off the show with 10 things that I want you to know about podcasting and the podcasting landscape: Podcasting is effective at growing your personal and business brand - coaching, speaking, Forum, Emceeing large events and being played on Virgin flights have all spun out from this very podcast. It’s growing. The podcast section in iTunes is 10 years old, there are 325,000 podcasts listed there and Apple reported 10 billion listens in 2016. It's also slowly being released on platforms like Spotify and Audible. Many needlessly complicate the whole podcasting process, it’s way easier than you think. Listen in as I answer some of the more technical questions about getting started. There’s some amazing shows out there, forget radio and TV get into podcasting. A couple that I'm loving are 'Here’s The Thing' & 'How I Built This' There’s a number of different podcast formats - Interview style (like mine), Soapbox (or rants), Q&A or a discussion among co-hosts. Audio / acoustic quality is critical. You're competing with road noise, gym noises, dishes you name it. Your audio really needs to be crisp for people to hang in there with you. My setup includes my mac, a blue yeti microphone and a free piece of software called Audacity. I have used other microphones and gear as needed (i.e. when I'm on the road or on holidays) but that's my basic set up. I try and find a room where the noise is dampened somewhat (i.e. not too echoey). You can do them anywhere. As mentioned above I have podcasted out of a  studio, my office, a closet, an island in Fiji, a hotel room, my car. Don’t judge success on audience interaction. It's hard not too but just focus on making a great show. The very nature of podcasting means that people are rarely at their computer so it's often hard to get that interaction. Stick with it. There are different ways to monetise your show - sponsorship, your own product, increased enquiry to existing business, new revenue streams. My show is successful because I mix education with entertainment(and I’ve stuck at it). I also go on to answer a total of 29 questions and they are all outlined in the episode timeline below.  Yep, another big episode of your favourite marketing podcast. Let's go!     EPISODE TIMELINE   00:00  Two marketing insights01:00  Teaser01:35  Welcome & overview04:15  10 things I want you to know about podcasting15:45  How far ahead do you (normally) pre-record your episodes?16:46  What do you think will change from the way podcasts are recorded, listened to, found in the next 5 + 10 years?17:45  What is your strike rate of guests you have asked to be on the show to the ones that do turn up?18:23  How many (on average) shows do you do per year that are not up to your high standards?19:19  If you could go back 7 years to when you first started, what bit of advice would you give yourself about podcasting?20:04  Of the podcasts you listen to, how many do you find yourself, compared to how many are recommended to you?20:40  How many podcasts requests, in which another podcaster is asking to interview you, do you decline per year?21:22  How do you put aside the limiting belief that you are not any good at it when starting a podcast?23:33  How much does it really cost to put together a podcast?25:55  If you have an idea for a podcast but don't know if it will get any audience is it worth trying because it adds another bit of rich media and therefore SEO value or does a flop actually give you a negative score?27:45  What would be the minimum requirements for software, equipment etc to start a podcast with?29:35  Insights into Key Person of Influence32:55 &nbs

349 - How to integrate old-school marketing with your online efforts.

Old school marketing is often neglected these days at the expense of ensuring a business's online footprint is humming. Well, it doesn't have to be one or the other ... both should and can work in harmony. Previous guest Carmen Sognonvi is the owner and General Manager of Urban Martial Arts in Brooklyn. In just four years she tripled the number of students enrolled and she did it by focusing on old school, traditional marketing tactics and complemented them with highly effective online efforts. Urban Martial Arts have spent some serious time and money on their brand to make them appear bigger and better than their budget should allow. They're often asked where their headquarters are or if it's part of a chain. Since the beginning they have focused on bringing the friendliness of a Ma and Pa shop (which they are) and the professionalism of a fortune 500. Carmen's marketing prowess doesn't stop with the old-school traditional stuff though. Urban Martial Arts have got some pretty sophisticated online marketing funnels set up to support their offline efforts. Plus they are doing some really cool video marketing. Check out this 9 minute, story driven piece of content that they have on their about us page.     So listen in as Carmen walks us through her killer traditional marketing strategies including: Promotional booths Fliers Signage Email Marketing and much, much more I also share another low cost marketing idea in What Have You Got To Lose?  Today’s idea will show you how to create an ebook in 3 simple steps. Today’s guest Dr. Jonathan Brown of CitySkin has been not only listening to this show for the past 3-years, but he's also been implementing the ideas that caught his attention. The result? He's built a business he loves, going from 3 clients a week to over 3,000 a year. He's made marketing a hobby. So how did Dr Brown come to be on this episode of Australia’s best marketing podcast? Check out the message I got from the good doctor via LinkedIn: Hi Tim, I have been listening to your podcast for the past 3 years and it has transformed my business. I have gone from being a full time GP to an award winning website designer and Director of Cityskin clinic (www.cityskin.com.au) - with a rather large turnover! I have listened to your podcast and taken action. I have built the Cityskin website from scratch and now contains a PHD's worth of information on all aspects of Cosmetic treatments. We are now seen by patients as trusted information providers. The website contains videos, interesting articles and easy to read guides to cosmetic treatments. This, combined with raving reviews, has meant that we are fully booked out week after week in 3 locations. We were also delighted to have received an award for 'Australasia's Best Cosmetic Website 2016' at the recent Cosmetic Industry awards in Sydney. As a thank you I thought I'd send you a gift for all the hard work that you put into the podcast. It keeps me inspired every week so thank you. Here is a gift voucher that you can use for something nice to drink - I didn't want a bottle to smash in the post! If you ever want someone to talk first hand on the podcast about how your advice helped their business flourish then feel free to get in touch! All the best, Dr. Jonathan Brown How good is that! Side note: this is a pretty great template to get yourself on podcasts. It hit’s all the right notes - flattery, bribery PLUS he didn’t forget the ask at the end. So I called him. Listen in as Dr Jonathan Brown walks us through his 7 key take-aways from The Small Business Big Marketing Show: 1. Don’t try and cheat Google. A few years ago Google released it's hummingbird algorithm update. Amit Singhal, a Senior VP at Google, said of the algorithm "Google simply asks that you create relevant, unique, helpful content on a regular basis". That's it! 2. Make it easy for people to do business with you Cityskin clinic has its processes nailed. They use software called cliniko for their client bookings and there is a solid, automated follow up process in place so that customers can easily book in and book a follow up. 3. The power and potential of review sites to create trust Dr Brown has a few complications with reviews as health practitioners cannot obtain testimonials by law. They can however ask for feedback. So if the good doctor can benefit from positive feedback surely you can too. 4. Know your limits Dr Brown does WAY more of the grunt work than I usually recommend but that's ok because he loves it! It's a hobby. That being said he still knows his limitations. Design is not his strong suit so that's all been outsourced. As have the phones and other business processes, either to a company or to technology. 5. Put a PHD of content on your website There are over 80,000 words of content on the Cityskin clinic website. That is literally a PHD worth of material. They are also creating videos and are looking at other ways to create content. This positions them as the authority and guess what? Google (and their prospective clients) love them for it. 6. Know your customers This is marketing 101. You need to understand who your customer is so you can market to them effectively. Cityskin's client is generally a 40+ female. So the website and clinic colours are feminine and the design and tone is sophisticated. 7. Tap into the emotional side of your clients Knowing who you customers are is not enough. You need to know them emotionally as well. Why are they looking for your product or service? How does it make them feel? Also in this episode of Small Business Big Marketing... I share another low cost marketing idea in What Have You Got To Lose?Today’s idea will show you how to grow your influence within your industry by starting a LinkedIN Group. And we go back into the show's vault, revisiting a bit of a marketing hero of mine - Jay Baer, who explained why it’s so important to hug your haters and how to do it. Mike Rosenbaum is a serial entrepreneur, who previously co-founded Deals Direct. As the co-founder of spacer.com.au, the AirBnB of space, Mike now focuses his passion on the booming sharing economy, specifically helping people utilise their unutilised assets like storage and driveways. 346 - When a personal obsession becomes your next big business idea, with ice-cream aficionado Scott Kilmartin

Scott Kilmartin loves ice-cream. In fact, he's on a mission to build Australia's (maybe the world's) most beautiful and impressive ice cream truck. Her name is Grace the Vintage Ice Cream Truck, and she's Scott's next big business idea. Scott originally appeared on The Small Business Big Marketing Show way back in episode 14 when he was the owner and founder of Haul. Since then he's sold Haul, travelled the world and dived deep into his passion - ice cream, visiting 173 ice cream shops in 8 countries, finishing with Gelato school in Rome. As you do! Having done the hard yards in market research, Scott returned to Melbourne to start an ice cream cart business, but where it gets really interesting is when he buys a 50-year old delivery van with the dream of turning it into Australia’s best ice cream truck. $100k plus later, his dream (Grace the vintage Ice Cream Truck) is nearly realised. Nearly! In fact, for the first 20 minutes of the show we're recording sitting inside the old girl! I think you’re going to love this chat, Scott’s enthusiasm for what he’s doing and sheer willingness to roll up his sleeves and get stuff done is infectious. Plus there’s some solid business and marketing learnings along the way. We cover a tonne of marketing ground in this show including: End to end customer experience The power and importance of design ... again! The psychology of crowd funding Why having fun in business is so important The power of storytelling and how to use it in business Here's Scott's crowdfunding video: Also in this episode of your favourite marketing podcast ... 345 - How to use crowdsourcing to get more done and grow your business

If you’ve listened to this show long enough, you’ll know that I fundamentally believe there’s never been a better time to market a small business. Why? Because the tools and resources we have at our disposal are amazing. They enable us to do things that 5 or 10 years ago were just way too expensive. One of those resources is crowdsourcing - and who better to explain how to use crowdsourcing effectively than Designcrowd founder, Alec Lynch, the founder of Designcrowd, the world’s #1 custom design marketplace; which coincidently was once a sponsor of this show. For those who are unaware of what Designcrowd is, put simply, it’s an online marketplace where graphic designers from all over the world compete to get you a design you love. Now Alec is not here to sell you on the benefits of Designcrowd. But he is here to explain the concept and power of crowdsourcing, and how you can use it to achieve things in your business that previously you may have thought were just too expensive things like design, voice-overs, photography, copywriting and so on. On top of that, he also shares: Where the idea for Designcrowd came from How he got it to market Some of the marketing tactics he’s used to grow Designcrowd including a clever guerilla marketing idea Also in this episode of your favourite marketing podcast ... I share a simple 3-step marketing strategy that involves handwritten thank you letters. And we go back into the SBBM vault, revisiting a past episode in which I caught up with past guest Ben Buie whose YouTube video How to tie a tie has hd in excess of 30 million view! Three critical success factors to getting crowdsourcing right:i. Get your brief rightii. Don’t skimp on the prize money you offeriii. Provide useful, constructive feedback to those who respond to your brief Be your own coach and actively look for the positives. 344 - "Impossible is nothing" is the catchcry of Mon Purse's Lana Hopkins as she builds a global empire

Lana Hopkins is the founder of an amazing retail experience called Mon Purse. An online and offline personalised luxury handbag and leather goods business called Mon Purse which has absolutely exploded over the past 12-months. After being frustrated by not being able to find the perfect handbag in Sydney, Lara went to a 'build a bear' workshop which allowed you to create a completely customised teddy bear. Lana thought why not create the same thing for handbags. Mon Purse is a personalised luxury handbag and leather goods business that basically allows you to make a handbag or wallet from scratch. You choose the leathers, colours, linings, metal details and so on. It then gets manufactured in Europe and shipped to anywhere in the world. We cover a lot of marketing ground in this chat including: Where the idea came from and more importantly, how the idea turned into a business How she did $1 Million in the first 3 months How Lana has established distribution in Myers, Selfridges and Bloomingdales Why she never does sales or discounts How she avoids overwhelm as the business grows exponentially Also In this episode of your favourite marketing podcast...  I share another low cost marketing idea for you to implement immediately in our new segment lovingly called What Have You Got To Lose? I found this when writing my book - The Boomerang Effect. It was easy to be verbose and wordy. So I spent a huge amount of time removing words and sentences until I felt that the key point of each chapter was shining through. Simplifying things takes work and courage, but always pays off. The Mon Gallery. I love it when businesses create their own language. Avoiding the word shop or store and calling the Mon Purse bricks and mortar retail presence a Gallery, gives the brand a certain je ne sais quoi! I’ve done this with The Small Business Big Marketing Club - which, whilst at the heart of it is a Forum, as a Member of the Club you get so much more - and it’s much more interesting to be part of a Club, right? Impossible is nothing. What a brilliant attitude. It certainly applies to your marketing too. I see too many business owners with limiting beliefs around creating effective marketing. “It’s too complicated. Too expensive. Too time consuming.” Rubbish! If you really want a video marketing strategy. If you really want to write a book. If you really want the world’s best website then you’ll find a way and a means. 343 - Michael Klim's Olympic Successes Have Followed Him Into The World Of Small Business With Milk & Co.

Dual Olympic Swimming Gold Medalist, Michael Klim’s success in the pool has followed him into the world of small business with his business Milk & Co. Having started his male skincare range 8-years ago, he’s now taking on the likes of L’Oreal and other big skincare manufacturers ... and winning. Listen in as Michael explains how he’s built Milk & Co into a global male skincare powerhouse. I interviewed Michael way back in episode 6 of The Small Business Big Marketing Podcast and since then he has gone from 3 products to 60, going up against some pretty big competition, and implementing a distribution strategy that would be the envy of many FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) manufacturers. We cover plenty of ground in this chat including: How he’s applied his time as an Olympian to growing a successful small business We talk about the power of goal-setting I ask him how his public profile has helped grow his business He shares his biggest challenges and hurdles - yes, even Olympians have them! 341 - Customer experience tips from the owner of Australia's best airport

Stephen Byron has been the the Managing Director of Canberra Airport since his family bought it in 1998, and has turned it into a world-class airport offering an exceptional customer experience. Since it's purchase Stephen has overseen its transformation from a fairly unimpressive regional airport to a world class airport with over $2 billion being invested in airport infrastructure, a new terminal, a retail precinct and three business parks which accommodate more than 10,000 workers. Now you might be thinking “What can I, the small business owner, learn from someone who owns an airport?” Well, I gotta tell you … plenty. What I love about Stephen’s story is the lengths he and his team have gone to in identifying what annoys people about airports, then set about solving each and every one of them in the new design. 339 - Kent and Lime's Take On Personalisation Maybe Changing The Way We Shop Forever

Personlisation and customised retail experiences are becoming more than a trend, they're fast becoming a demand. This week's guest, Will Rogers from Kent and Lime is certainly riding the personalisation wave. He’s come up with a way that just might change the way we shop … forever I’m an absolute shocker when it comes to clothes shopping. It causes me all sorts of discomfort and anxiety. Fortunately, Will Rogers is on a mission to change the way men shop and pay for clothes. Will Rogers is the founder of a retail experience called Kent and Lime, which provides men with a personalised clothing selection delivered to their door. Which is kind of a exciting as it means no more visits to busy shopping centres! Will’s got 15 years experience working in fashion retail in both the UK and Australia, so clearly he’s a well dressed kind a fellow. He’s also a customer experience junkie, and on the look out for new ways to engage with and delight his customers. 336 - Beechworth Bakery's Tom O'Toole on making dough ... the folding type, that is!

Where do I start?! Firstly, let me remind you of who Tom O’Toole is. Tom is best known for creating Australia’s most successful standalone retail bakery business; which employs over 255 staff, turns over in excess of $17 million and serves over a million customers per year. I first had Tom on this show about five years ago on episode 91 where he shared his very personal story of growing up in extreme poverty, to becoming one of Australia’s great small business success stories. His bakeries are scattered throughout regional Victoria, and as Tom openly admits, they’re not a whole lot different to most other bakeries. What is different is Tom’s approach to his people, and how they go about offering good old fashioned customer service. And that’s what Tom shares in this one hour keynote that he delivered at a conference I emceed last week. (BTW, thanks to DaveSheerman.com for getting me this audio). Now, some things to note: Tom’s presentation style is unorthodox. He’s high-energy, in fact he yells at times. He stutters as he drives a point home. And he doesn’t hold back with his language; so if there are kids within earshot, now might be a good time to get out the Playdough. What you also need to know is that he’s referencing slides as he talks, so sometimes you might be wondering what he’s referring to. Added to that his clicker (which he calls a mouse) wasn’t working for him - but don’t worry, it will all make sense in the end. I was actually in two minds as to whether to share this with you or not, as at times he bounces from pillar to post, going from one topic to another in break neck speed; but it somehow all comes together in the end. He has a rare ability to inspire change without audiences ever realising it until they walk out, totally energized and raring to go. To see him in action, check out a 3 minute video highlights reel below So, strap yourself in for a wild ride as Australia’s most famous baker as he lifts the lid on customer service, marketing, team culture and getting outside your comfort zone. Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Tom O’Toole … Hang on, that's not all folk, I also share another low cost marketing idea for you to implement immediately in our new segment loving called What Have You Got To Lose? 335 - How To Encourage Customers To Buy More With Afterpay's Nick Molnar.

Nick Molnar has figured out how to encourage customers to buy more. He is the founder of Afterpay, a simple payment system that lets customers buy what they want today (in fact, they can take it home immediately), then pay for it over 4 equal fortnightly installments. 334 - Gwyneth Paltrow thinks this little Aussie retailer is doing very big things

I remember my days working for Australia’s biggest travel agent - I absolutely dreaded wearing their corporate uniform. I felt like such a dag. Polyester shirt, navy slacks. In fact, I think the tie was even on a bit of elastic! Where was today’s guest when I needed her?! She runs a very disruptive uniform business - that even Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow loves! Her name is Felicity Rogers and she started Cargo Crew. I met her a couple of months ago at the Telstra Business Awards where I was the emcee. In fact, the year before, Cargo Crew actually won the National Small Business Award! So, what’s Cargo Crew. Well, as Felicity says “She’s building a brand that crews (that’s her funky word for workers) around the world love to wear”.  She goes on to say “Cargo Crew creates original, design led uniforms that enhance and compliment a business’ visual identity and brand language.” Cargo Crew now exports to over 30 countries with 12,000 crews around the world wearing their uniforms. Their clients include Renault, Hoyts & Freedom Furniture, artisan coffee roasters Seven Seeds and even Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop skin care business.  Felicity shares: The power of a good corporate uniform Why your  business’s visual language is important How she got a massive international contract by advertising in a little magazine How Gwyneth Paltrow came to wearing a Cargo Crew apron Plus we talk pricing, photography, retail vs online and plenty more BTW, during the interview, Felicity forgot to tell us about another big win, which I’ll share with you after the interview.  Plus I have some feedback from a listener who’s been inspired to create a podcast herself. And we revisit a past episode in which Australia’s voice of online retail shares some gold. 333 - How to create an amazing business culture with Ant Morell from Bounce

Ant Morell knows how to create an amazing business culture. He is the founder of Bounce - an indoor trampolining playground for people of all ages, that’s experienced some extraordinary growth in its first four years; and a big reason for this is due to the amazing culture Ant and his team have created. To fully understand how they’ve done this, you’ll need a basic understanding of a Melbourne-based charity called Reach; because that’s where I met Ant for the first time about 10 years ago. Reach had a huge impact on my life, and on Ant as he’s utilised a lot of what he learnt at Reach to build the Bounce brand philosophy. So Reach is a wonderful NFP that’s focussed on helping young people at risk find their passion in life. It’s based on a concept called The Hero’s Journey which focusses on how we as humans will only find true happiness in life when we acknowledge just how good each of us are, and that we all have the right to put our best self forward in whatever we choose to do in life. Imagine if you’d learnt that when you were at school?! So … back to Bounce. Whilst Bounce in its physical form is simply a room full of trampolines, in it’s emotional form (it’s brand) Bounce is all about personal empowerment - both for its staff and customers. This will make more sense as we get into the interview. So pen and paper at the ready as Ant also covers: How to build a meaningful business culture Tips on how to attract and retain great staff Ideas around creating unforgettable customer experiences But that's not all. In this episode of your favourite marketing podcast: I tackle a question from a listener who’s wanting to be a breath of fresh air in a stuffy old industry. 331 - Spell & the Gypsy Collective's Lizzy Abegg on how she (and her sis) built a multi-million dollar Byron Bay fashion empire.

8 years ago, Lizzy Abegg had an epiphany that she needed to move to Byron Bay to help her little sister grow a struggling jewelry business. Well, that business is now called Spell & the Gypsy Collective ...  and it’s a multi-million dollar fashion empire. “Spell and the what?!” I hear you say. Spell & the Gypsy Collective is a Byron Bay fashion label with a cult-like following. The label began when Lizzy’s little sister Isabella (whose childhood nickname was Spell) started selling her handmade jewellery at Byron Bay's local markets. Before too long Lizzy had an epiphany that she needed to be in Byron Bay with her sister, so left her Bondi Beach home and career as a film editor to become Spell’s business partner. From there the label has expanded into fashion, accessories and homewares … and they recently won the overall national Telstra Business Award (against some pretty bloody tough competition). Spell is now consistently doing over a million dollars a month, has 660,000 Instagram followers, and a flagship store frequented by celebs from around the world. It’s also a shining example of entrepreneurship and business passion in the notoriously tough and highly competitive fashion industry. We cover a lot of ground in this chat … from the early days of Spell, to the importance of authenticity, to why we should avoid perfection, to some critical factors in ensuring your marketing actually delivers. Plus I share some feedback from a listener who's taking action after tuning in to their favourite marketing podcast ;00, and I share three live events that you should consider attending (well, two actually, the first one is invite only and all invites are gone). 329 - A brave sea change that lead to growing a dream business, with Pauy Medeiros of The Source Bulk Foods

Paul Medeiros (and his wife) made a brave sea change by leaving corporate and buying the Mullumbimby Fruit Shop. Then, when Woolworth’s decided to come to town, he could have panicked and accepted the fact that Australia’s biggest supermarket chain would kill off his business. Instead, he rolled the dice, and more than doubled their retail footprint. He’s now the founder of one of Australia's hottest up and coming franchises - The Source Bulk Foods. This is a story of courage, determination and being true to one’s values. Paul Medeiros is a cubicle escapee who left a high-paying / high-pressure executive position in a large publicly listed company to start a better life up near beautiful Byron Bay Paul is also the founder, owner and head Franchisor of The Source Bulk Foods business - an amazing new retail concept that’s taken the franchise world by storm. Basically, it’s a good old-fashioned grocery shopping done in a modern way. The shops look and feel very rustic and organic - lots of exposed brick and wood, and they sell ~ 400 bulk whole foods like nuts, seeds, grains, herbs, spices, cleaning and personal care products etc. You can buy as little or as much as you like. The big point-of-difference is its waste-free shopping. Customers BYO their own bottles, containers and bags to refill, as The Source is plastic bag free experience. Paul shares some absolute gold with us: His escape from the cubicle How he spent 3-years deciding on his next move How he took on one of the biggest supermarket chains … and won! 327 - How To Make a Viral Video with David Christison Who's Made 8 Hugley Successful Ones

Ever wondered how to make a viral video? Then listen up. David Christison is the founder of The Woolshed - a video production company based in Melbourne that’s done something quite genius (I think) for the art of viral videos, and the marketing of his own business. Over the past two years the Woolshed has produced 8 unique viral videos. Videos that many of you would have seen, and gone OMG! … then gone and shared it with your mates. But the amazing thing is, all 8 of the videos are fully manufactured. They’re fakes! This is an absolute masterclass on how to make a viral video. You’ll find all eight viral videos over at at this blog post, but some of the major ones include the guy who fights off a Great White Shark in Sydney harbour (this one sucked me in!); the crazy guy who runs into an outback tornado to take a selfie; and the snowboarding girl being chased by a bear! As David says in his press release, “We set out to better understand exactly how to create short-form, highly shareable and snackable’ content, that is capable of reaching worldwide mass audiences, without the luxury of pricey media buys, ad campaigns, publicity strategies or distribution deals.” And, without any paid media, promotion or publicity here’s what the 8 viral videos have achieved: 164 years of YouTube watch time 205 million online views 500,000+ comments Plus worldwide news coverage on all the big outlets Add to this the fact that this brilliant experiment single-handedly launched David’s business, to the point now where they are working for big names clients from around the world.I love this story. Listen in and you’ll discover what works, what doesn’t, and what are the absolute ‘must haves’ for any viral marketing campaign. PLUS, I share part 1 of a 4-part series in which I share 5 email subject lines that are highly clickable. I’m also excited to announce The Growth Hack Accelerator, a live event I’m speaking at in September. Joined by two other speakers in Outsourcing expert David Warne, and Systems specialist David Guest, Growth Hack Accelerator is a ridiculously practical 3-hour breakfast session in which you’ll discover … How to create a marketing system that will position you as a thought leader How to radically reduce your businesses greatest expense How to remove yourself from the business for maximum growth ( a theme that’s common to many recent episodes) Yep, another big episode of your favourite marketing podcast. 326 - How to make more money by working less in your business with Posture Podiatry's Daniel Gibbs

Today's guest very kindly cancelled a game of golf (on a Tuesday morning!) in order to do this interview, so the epsidoe title of how to make more money by working less in your business is more than apt! I met Daniel Gibbs of Posture Podiatry at an event recently, when he came up and told me how much he loved my show, and began to explain how he’d implemented a few of the ideas he’d heard over the years. I was impressed ... I do love a good action-taker. He particularly liked the episode I did with Dentist Padi Lund who, on the verge of suicide, made some fundamental changes to his business life, and lived to tell the story. Now, whilst Daniel’s predicament was never that dier, he did find himself at one point being booked out 3-months in advance, seeing patients at midnight, feeling completely exhausted trying to both work on and in his business, whilst at the same time wanting to be there for his heavily pregnant wife. So, like any motivated business owner, he made some fundamental changes to the way he did business. This really is inspiring stuff. Listen in and you’ll discover: How to work less in your business How to implement an unforgettable customer experience The importance of systems … and post-it notes! How critical that first 20 seconds with a customer is How the quality of the herbal tea that you serve is in direct relationship to the quality of your service Why you need a Wall of WOW! And so much more After working under another Podiatrist for a number of years, Daniel opened his own clinic at the age of 29, and from day one made a decision that it was going to be the best in class. In today's episode, I also help a Horse & Donkey charity called Hope Pastures who has zero marketing budget but needs to feed their precious animals over the cold Winter month, with an idea that could help them raise plenty! It based on this fantastic crowd funding campaign: Yep, another big episode of your favourite marketing podcast. 325 - Willie Smith's ... A Boutique Cider Brand Punching Way Above Its Marketing Weight

Sam Reid is the co-founder of cider brand Willie Smiths. I meet Sam at the recent Telstra Business Awards in Tasmania. Now, one of my jobs as the emcee was to announce the finalists for each category and read out a short bio about their business. Each business always got a round of applause … although some got a bigger applause than others. Willie Smith’s Cider got the biggest by far …. Quite heartfelt, it was! So, in kicked my marketing brain. What are they doing that other businesses aren’t? What makes them so special? Basically … Why all the love?! At the end of the night I suggested he come on the show and reveal his secret sauce. “Hell yeah!” was his measured response. So, here’s Sam Reid, co-founder of Willie Smith’s Cider. Also in this episode of your favourite marketing podcast, I share my top 10 ice-breaker questions that I use during pre-interview chats, and in general when meeting people for the first time. They get past the surface and fast-track getting to know someone at a much deeper level. And I even give you my answers to each of the questions. Yep … it gets personal! Free yourself up so you can create new things - I love Sam’s passion for creativity and innovation. The Festival wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t created space between the day-to-day running of the business, and time to think. Who’s guilty of not doing this? I am. But when I do find time to sit and think; or walk and think; it’s bloody beautiful. So … here’s a couple of ways to create that time - 1. Be less controlling, and trust that your staff will solve problems in their own way; 2. We’ve covered this at length in past episodes - but if you want to cut to the chase, check out Cornerstone Business Solutions - an off-shoring business that I have an interest in, I believe in it so much. “We’re all about being memorable” - Are you? 324 - The Sufferfest : A masterclass in how to create a kick-ass brand with ex-Swiss banker David McQuillen

Today's episode is a masterclass in successful brand building. Ex-Swiss banker David McQuillen, is the founder of Sufferfest and CSO (that’s Chief Suffering Officer) of the mythical country ... Sufferlandria. Bored with conventional ways to get fit on a bike, David taught himself how to edit video, and after negotiating rights with major cycling races (like the Tour de France!), he created his first Sufferfest training video and inflicted it on the world. And the world responded very favourably. So much so that he took it down as quickly as he put it up! You’ll find out why shortly. He then had his confidence boosted after being called an assassin, and a sadist, and realising his true calling was to spread agony and misery, David quit his well-paying career, and escaped the cubicle to focus fulltime on building Sufferfest. It’s now a multi-million dollar brand run out of his home in Tasmania. Now do not fear, this isn’t an episode for middle aged men in lycra! Uh-uh, I think you’re gunna love this, as we uncover: The importance of creativity in building a brand people love How to build a tribe of long-term, loyal customers The importance of an authentic brand language Why humour is important in your marketing messages A secret social media strategy ... that doesn’t involve you! 323 - How To Disrupt Any Industry with Dominic Holland from Tow.com.au

Every industry is ripe for disruption. That’s the view of today’s guest, 29 year-old Dominic Holland of tow.com.au. Launched just two years ago, tow.com.au has completely disrupted the long-established and tightly held towing industry. The business did 7-figure revenues in year one and grew in year two by 350%. Listen in as Dom explains how to disrupt any industry. [Tweet "This business did 7-figure revenues in year one. And grew by 350% in year two! Here’s how."] [Tweet "'We’ve found something that clients are demanding and begging us for.' @dommholland"] The amazing thing is, software engineer Dom, knew nothing about towing. What he did understand was that technology is shaking the foundations of every industry. That every industry has massive potential, and it’s just about working up the right model that delivers customers what they want, and makes it incredibly easy for them to use you. [Tweet "'Everyone coming to your site looks for the same thing – give it to them immediately'@dommholland"] Dom himself was last year awarded Queensland’s Young Entrepreneur of the year, and recently won the New Business Category at the 2016 Telstra Business Awards. I gotta tell ya, this chat is dripping with marketing gold, as Dom explains: How and why to disrupt your industry A pro-tip for ensuring your website converts visitors to buyers A simple hack to automating those annoying tasks in your business Why Google Adwords is better than trying to rank organically And so much more…. Seriously, hit pause and grab your journal. You know, there was so many learnings in this interview that I’ve captured them all in this blog post How a very disruptive business did 7-figure revenues in year one – with Dominic Holland of Tow.com.au. 322 - [WARNING] This episode will challenge you, but ultimately leave you feeling inspired (I hope).

Hey team. Bonus episode today, and a different kind of one at that. No marketing gold, no business lessons (well maybe a couple), just an inspiring conversation with a couple of homeless people, and a fellow for whom volunteering has enabled him to see his work life in a whole different way. By the way, there’s a language warning on this one. Nothing outrageous, but I do get a little fired-up. You may recall a couple of episodes back I interviewed Lucas and Nic, the founders of Orange Sky Laundry – a mobile clothes washing service for homeless people. If you haven’t listened to it then I suggest you do. Nic and Lucas’s idea and passion touched me big time, so following that interview, I went and volunteered for them, spending a couple of hours at an Orange Sky Laundry parked on Collins Street in Melbourne’s CBD. I loved every bit of it. The chance to give back to people in need. The chance to learn some life lessons from those less fortunate. And the conversations I had with one of their volunteers, and a couple of Orange Sky’s homeless friends, have been life changing. I’ll share what I learnt, later on. So, listen in as I wander through Melbourne’s CBD trying to locate the Orange Sky Van ...Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/marketingpodcastSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

321 - How to Avoid Discounting with Tas Moulis of QPaint

It is so easy to discount, to undercut your competition to get the business. Although it's an easy strategy it is quite simply a race to the bottom. This one's all about how to avoid discounting. [Tweet "'How and why to avoid discounting in your business"] In this fireside chat with Tas we cover: Tas's 3 effective strategies on how to avoid discounting Why building relationships is crucial in business The power of getting off the tools and focussing on what's going to generate the big bucks Some serious business courage   PLUS I head back to last week's interview with Orange Sky Laundry and my night out onsite with them. I capture a bit of a chat I had with Matt, one of Orange Sky's brilliant volunteers and Herb one of Orange Sky's homeless friends. Herb is one seriously beautiful human being. The first thing he did was give me two tickets to the footy as he had 4 bags with all his possessions in them that he wouldn't be allowed to bring into the ground. Here are 4 powerful lessons Herb taught me during our chat: There’s always someone worse off than you. Be grateful for what you have. And you don’t need much to be happy. In particular, avoid discounting with new clients - this sets a precedent that will be hard to break. Instead, work hard at ensuring they see massive value in you and what you offer. I talk about this extensively in The Boomerang Effect. Actively look for a problem and fix it. This idea is so beautifully counter-intuitive, but it works. Look at this idea as if you were a customer. How cool would it be for a business you’re dealing with to bring a problem to your attention, and then tell you it’s been fixed. Such a great way to build trust. I found Tas’s tough decisions inspiring:He refuses to discount, when a simple 10% off could secure the job.He chose to stop painting (something he was very good at), and focus on the high-value activities like quoting, which quadrupled his business. He sacked clients that made him and his staff miserable; and identified 4 types of clients he did want to work with. Go back to episode 183 with Dentist Paddy Lund who also did this with great success. He is gutsy enough to ask (and answer) the question “Where are we really at?”     OVER TO YOU …   What was your biggest marketing learning or ah-ha moment from this episode? 320 - Orange Sky Laundry - A simple idea that's making the world a better place.

Every now and then I do an interview which not only changes the way I look at business, but changes the way I view things … A bit woo woo I know, but get ready for a thoroughly inspiring interview with the founders of the social movement Orange Sky Laundry, who have become our 2016 Young Australians of the year, no less. One day they had a crazy idea to throw a washing machine and a dryer in the back of a van and go and help out the homeless by doing their washing. Orange Sky Laundry was born. Not only did they not realise that this crazy idea was a world first but it was what happened between hitting the go button on the washing machine and the load being finished and dried is what makes the real difference … conversations. I spent a night out on the road with Orange Sky Laundry and I had some really powerful conversations which I will bring to you in the coming weeks.   Here’s Orange Sky’s Why... Now I am seriously motivated to help these guys and you can help too. Here are 3 ways: You can volunteer You can donate (as little as $6) You can introduce them to someone you know, someone who can do the above 2 things or (and maybe even better) you can introduce them to a HUGE sponsor. I really loved bringing this episode to you and I hope you get as much out of it as I have.   EPISODE TIMELINE   01:24 Welcome & overview02:20 A quick update on a recent episode about race car sponsorship03:00 Today’s guest introduction - Nick Marchesi & Lucas Patchet of Orange Sky Laundry04:11 Interview with Nick Marchesi & Lucas Patchet - Part 119:05 Insights into WebCentral20:20 Insights into DesignCrowd21:05 Interview with Nick Marchesi & Lucas Patchet - Part 233:10 My top 3 attention grabbers from my chat with Nick Marchesi & Lucas Patchet35:50 Feedback from an annoyed listener38:12 Wrap-up and insights in to next week’s guests     EPISODE SPONSORS   WebCentral listener offer – Beautiful and effective websites. And I’ve noticed he responds with exactly the same answer in every interview he does.So I encourage you to have 3-5 key messages that you share whenever you get the chance. Have a name for your customers. Orange Sky call them their Homeless Friends. I call you my Motivated Business Owners. Doing so brings emotion and connection to your marketing. Orange Sky needs our support. As I mentioned earlier, I helped out at an Orange Sky Laundry the night after this interview. 319 - Philippines Outsourcing Tour #2 : Highlights & Learnings from Timbo and Friends.

This episode was recorded on the second Small Business Big Marketing Outsourcing Tour to the Philippines. Now before we get started I know that outsourcing means different things to different people and I've covered my thoughts on Australian businesses outsourcing to the Philippines on the blog. This episode is all about looking at the glass half full. I share my thoughts as I taxi down the runway in Manilla, ready to take off back to Melbourne and I also captured some of my guests thoughts, opinions and 'aha' moments in the minibus after the tour as well. Here are some of those insights. 1. Adam Longhurst from Leather Italia Why did you join the tour? Adam has felt the full force and effect of fluctuations in the Aussie dollar. He attended the tour with his eyes wide open to see what opportunities there were for outsourcing any of the labour components of his business. Aha Moment? Outsourcing bookkeeping and accounting. When Adam sat back and really thought about it, he realised he was spending a disproportionate amount of time on the books. Now it’s certainly important to be across the numbers but is that really what he went into business to do? Outcome? Adam loves his accountant, he’s highly skilled and one of his trusted advisors BUT he’s constantly on his back about bookkeeping. Tony doesn’t want to do the books, he doesn’t like doing the books, however another full time employee in Australia is cost prohibitive. Some people buy components offshore, we’re trying to buy some labour offshore. If we grow, then more money and jobs will come off the back of that directly into the Australian economy too. 2. Russ Porteous of Firewize Why did you join the tour? I wanted to see, in person how business is done in the new economy. Aha Moment? We went to a BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) that was as professional an outfit as ever I’ve seen anywhere. Outcome? This tour is on the back of 15 years of research, I’ve come to crystallise in my mind how we can move from an adhoc outsourcing basis to a more streamlined, wholistic and professional strategy. 3. Marcus Nicholls & Ariel Endean of Akuna Pet Resorts Why did you join the tour? We had been considering outsourcing for 2 years. We were already outsourcing some small tasks but we were afraid of going further. Aha Moment? I wasn’t expecting to see just how dynamic the team here in the Philippines are. They truly look and function with the same intelligence, creativity and drive as a crack team in Australia. Outcome? Just start. You’re going to in the next 5-10 years anyway as this is the direction the world is going. 4. Will Porteous (Russ's son) Will is the son of Russ and work's for Firewize and is also studying engineering at uni. Will's take away was that it was a real 'eye opener'. He said that 'when you think about outsourcing you automatically think ‘sweatshop’ but it absolutely was not. It’s just like Australia, so professional and well organised.' I asked Will what he was going to say to his mates about the tour. He said: "I’d say to my mates that are in uni that they need to be way ahead of the curve. Just pumping work out is not going to get you a job." 5. Amanda Stevens & Brendan Buchanan  Past guest of the show happened to be in the Philippines at Cornerstone Business Solutions inducting a new team member. here are a few quotes from the show: "We came here with pretty high expectations" "The output is just extraordinary. We’re talking world class output."   Aha Moment   The other surprise has been their ability to follow a process but also demonstrate incredible initiative around it. People underestimate how well they will understand the rationale behind a project.   So how about that? I'd love to know your thoughts on the show and about outsourcing in general. Success stories? War stories? As you can probably tell I'm pretty keen on outsourcing as not only a marketing strategy but a business strategy.   It's time to start taking positive steps to a more productive and enjoyable business life.     *** As an aside, it may be interesting to some listeners to understand how these tour came about; so, here's a short time line:   Episode 157 - I interviewed David Warne from the Sydney Tall Ships business   We became friends, but then he disappeared, only to pop up about two years ago. He'd moved to The Philippines with his family, along with the whole back office of the Sydney Tall Ships business as well.   That resulted in a 90% reduction in running costs, and a 21% increase in turnover.   That called for another interview - which appeared in Episode 254.   During that interview he had some great tips on how to effectively outsource to The Philippines.   Then, in 2015, I then took a group of listeners over to The Philippines on a business outsourcing tour.
