Michelle Bridges has built a strong personal brand on the back of #JFDI | #418
Michelle Bridges was once a personal trainer in a very crowded marketplace. Like, there’s no shortage of personal trainers, right? Now she’s Australia's most influential with a solid TV profile, an author of ten books, two product ranges and more. Join me, as she explains exactly how she’s built a hugely strong and profitable personal brand. “If your only reason for doing something is to make money, then you might get lucky. Might! But I doubt it very much. First and foremost you really have to be true to your core values.” - Michelle Bridges There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about speaking at conferences then you’ll get this answers in this interview, including: How did it all start - and no, she wasn’t born in front of a TV camera … she worked hard to get where she is. How to build a strong personal brand? Why you need a personal brand? How to avoid procrastination? How to not let perfection get in the way of production? And so much more ... A little more about today’s guest: This very personal chat with Michelle Bridges first appeared on this show way back in 2015. I’d just emceed a conference in which she was a keynote speaker and boy, did she rock the stage. Not only does she have a great story to tell about how she’s built such a strong and profitable personal brand; but she’s a huge proponent of not letting perfection get in the way of productivity. Michelle’s CV is pretty damn impressive. Her TV appearances include being the host of The Biggest Loser, she’s written ten books on living healthy, she has her own clothing and vitamin range, and a fantastic online weight loss course called The 12-Week Body Transformation. And it all started out the back of her beaten up old car, as you’re about to hear. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Michelle Bridges: #JFDI - I love Michelle’s approach to getting stuff done. Procrastination is evil … so taking the attitude of being productive over being perfect is, I would argue, world’s best practice. Stop looking at the scoreboard. Instead, put your head down and bum up, and focus on the job at hand. Keep fit or get fit. As business owners, one of the first things to get ignored when growing our businesses is our health and well-being … which is pretty stupid, right? When I lost 30KG a few years ago, my business literally doubled. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Another motivated listener shares four marketing strategies that are working for her, and in return I give her a prize or three! And past guest Riz Syed shares how appearing on this show got him some positive TV coverage Resources mentioned: Michelle Bridges official website Michelle’s 12 Week Body Transformation Past guest Riz Syed of Zubia’s Brow Bars found himself on TV This week’s winner of the Monster Prize Draw: Laura Klein - Snotty Noses Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Prospa … Australia’s #1 online lender to small businesses. This simple (yet scary) conference speaking strategy generated $150K in new business | #417
Does public speaking freak you out? I’m guessing that’s a YES! But what if you spoke to a group of your ideal clients, and it generated a cool $150,000 in new business, and got you a full-page article in the Wall Street Journal? Would public speaking still freak you out? I’m guessing not! Today’s guest owns a Drone business, is not a professional public speaker, yet has made it his #1 marketing strategy. And it’s working a treat! “In such a new industry we recognised the need to be seen as the leaders and set out on the speaking circuit as our primary form of direct marketing. With 27 conferences in 2017 we avoid the drone shows but have spoken on landfills, forestry, power infrastructure, agriculture, mining, quarrying, renewable energy and many more. ” - James Rennie, AUAV There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. If you have questions about speaking at conferences then you’ll get this answers in this interview, including: Why should business owners speak at conferences? Why does speaking at conferences position you as an industry authority? How do you decide what conferences to speak at? How do you get accepted as a speaker at an industry conference? How do you become a proficient public speaker? What else do you need to do to make a conference generate a return? Plus plenty more ... A little more about today’s guest: James Rennie, is the co-founder of high tech drone business Australian Unmanned Aerial Vehicles - and, whilst he’s not a professional speaker, he makes a motza from speaking at conferences. You see, five years ago, he and his business partner Andrew, founded one of the first drone service businesses in Australia. At the time, their marketing was focused around explaining what a drone was, and what could be done with one. They then realised that as pioneers in a new industry they needed to be seen as the authorities, and set out on the conference speaking circuit as their primary form of direct marketing. They spoke at 27 conferences last year for industries as diverse as landfill, forestry, power, refrigeration … just to name a few. So have your pen and paper at the ready, as James explains exactly how he does it, and what it’s lead to. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with AUAV’s James Rennie: I think James’s conference speaking strategy is simple and brilliant … and I’d love you to adopt it. So here’s my challenge to you … go ahead and write a script for a 15-minute presentation that you know would be of benefit to your prospects. Then, go ahead and create a slide deck that supports your script. Practice it 20 times. Then find a conference that you’d love to speak at and get a spot on the stage. Scary, huh?! I love how James is also embedding himself in the conferences …. Sometimes taking an expo booth, other times sponsoring items like the memory stick. Speaking from stage is one thing, but being part of the overall conference experience is best practice. I loved the Dodgy Operator of the Month idea that he includes in each newsletter. Sometimes we can forget that as business owners and marketers we must entertain as well as educate and be helpful. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Another motivated listener shares four marketing strategies that are working for her, and in return I give her a prize or three! And I have a positive response (unlike the negative response I shared a couple of weeks ago) to the interview I did with Instagram superstars - Stephanie and Laura. Resources mentioned: Australian Unmanned Aerial Vehicles official website How to overcome your fear of public speaking How to become a professional public speaker and build your speaking business This week’s winner of the Monster Prize Draw: Lindsey Marsh - Sew To Grow Ryan Speak from AutomatleyHQ kindly responded positively to my interview with Instagram superstars Stephanie and Laura. Ex-Buddhist Monk turned entrepreneur Clarke Scott on why compassion is a critical success factor in business |#416
As business owners, we spend a lot of time honing our hard skills … productivity, cash flow management … marketing. But what about the softer skills - like empathy and compassion? They’re just as important, aren’t they? Ex-Buddhist Monk and now small business owner Clarke Scott thinks so, and he’s about to explain how we should use them to grow our precious businesses. “If you can come at everything, not just in business but in your life, by trying to be of service to others, then you’ll find things become a whole lot easier and more rewarding for all involved.” -Clarke Scott, Clarke Scott Education There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. If you have questions about how and why to practice being more compassionate in your business then you’ll get this answers in this interview with ex-Buddhist Monk Clarke Scott: What is compassion and why is it important in business? How can business owners be more compassionate? Is being compassionate in business just about other people, or should it include ourselves as well? Plus Clarke shares why he became a Buddhist Monk in the first place and what other learnings he’s now taken in to running his own personal brand marketing agency A little bit more about today’s guest: Throughout the 90s, Clarke lived and studied with Tibetan lamas both in Australia and India, whilst developing several software businesses as a means of supporting himself whilst living as a Buddhist monk. His initial contact with Buddhism came in 1995 when studying music at the Victoria College of the Arts. Since then he's read, thought about, practiced, and lived by the principles found within the Buddhist world-view every day since. Whilst Clarke no longer lives the monastic lifestyle, he is still very much a practising Buddhist, meditating daily, and with a strong belief that we cannot live our life well without creating something that has deep roots in how we view the world around us. Now don’t be fooled, this is not some wishy-washy spiritual chat. Instead, we explore the importance of being a compassionate and empathetic business owner … one who has a solid mindset for being in-service to others … and how that can have a hugely positive impact on our business. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Clarke Scott of Clarke Scott Education: I love the whole hourly meditation idea. Set a timer on your computer or watch to beep on the hour, then just stop and focus on your breath for just 60-seconds. I love the idea of stopping and reflecting on where others are at before you make a decision in your business. So often, in the heat of the moment, we can crack it at someone (or yourself) without giving any thought to how someone may be feeling or what they may be going through in their personal life. Whilst we didn’t talk much about personal branding, it is one of Clarke’s core business offerings, and an area of marketing I’m quite passionate about … so I encourage you to look in to it a little more. How to start a business in a foreign country with ex-Lawyer Michael Philippou of The Frozen Fruit Co. | #415
Did you hear the one about the two ex-London lawyers, who are married to each other, who get confused for brother and sister so often it’s weird, who moved to a foreign country (which one of them had never been to before), sell everything they own, have a baby, and start a plant-based Vegan soft serve concept in Santa Monica ... with no prior cooking experience? Me either, until one of them contacted me for a interview! “We landed in Santa Monica where we found people to be very open to trying new concepts and new food items … and it’s really a place where all the early innovators are … and we straight away knew that that’s where we needed to be. ” - Michael Philippou, Frozen Fruit Co. There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. If you have questions about leaving your current job and starting a business you love in a foreign country, then you’ll get the answers in this interview, including: How do you leave a high paying ‘secure’ job to start your own business? How do you get proof-of-concept on a business idea? How do you decide to start a business in a foreign country?! How do you go about setting up a business in the States? How do you create a brand from scratch? How to WOW your customers? How do you find the right staff for your small business? What is Transaction & Reaction Marketing? And plenty more ... Michael Philippou, is an ex-London Lawyer. He and his wife Victoria (also an ex-London Lawyer) both suffer from a massive sweet tooth, but are also conscious about what they eat. So, they started experimenting out-of-hours (like Lawyers don’t work long hours already!) and finally landed upon what they call their fruit-swirl recipe, which they started selling to local businesses. It wasn’t long before they had proof-of-concept, receiving a BBC Good Food Award, quit their jobs and got featured in Vogue, Tatler, and Jamie Oliver’s magazine! They then decided to sell up everything and move to Santa Monica - the heart of Veganism - where they had only 3-months to make this business idea happen before Visa laws would send them packing. You know why I love this story? Because it’s full of business courage and marketing smarts. Here’s two people who’ve had the guts to make a massive life change, to create a product and business they absolutely love, and who are laser-focused on creating amazing customer experiences. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Frozen Fruit Co.’s Michael Philippou.: I love Michael’s approach to wowing his customers, and in particular that one simple question he and Victoria ask often … which is “How should the customer feel when they … walk in the store? Read the menu? Interact with a staff member? Taste the product?” If wowing your customer is a part of your marketing that your struggling with then I’d also suggest reading my mate Amanda Stevens book Turning Customers Into Advocates. I love how Michael and Victoria made a very conscious decision to place themselves in a highly innovative environment by moving to Santa Monica … the heart of the Veganism. Now, I’m not suggesting we all pack our bags and head North or South, but I am suggesting it would be a good idea to take stock of who you’re hanging around with the most when it comes to seeking business inspiration. These people, whether you know it or not, will be impacting heavily on your business’s success. I love the fact that the Frozen Fruit Co’s menu is limited to just four flavours. A gutsy move, but amsart move. Like I said, choice hinders decision, so if you want to make it easier for people to choose to buy from you, offer them a small selection of well thought out products or services. They’ll love you for it. Instagram superstars Stephanie Claire-Smith & Laura Henshaw explain how they use Instagram to grow multiple businesses |#414
Everytime I see someone with a huge following on Instagram (or any social media for that matter) I’m like … How did they get that many followers? And how are they making money from it? Well, wonder no more, Timbo! Because today’s guests, Stephanie Claire-Smith and Laura Henshaw, have a combined Instagram following of over 1.3 million people, which they’ve turned in to multiple revenue streams - everything from an eBook to a health food brand with 21 products to Bikinis! Keen to know how they’ve done it? I certainly am! “On social media, people want to see the real you. I think one of the reasons our business is so successful is that we post relatable material. We don’t just post glossy, polished stuff. The more relatable and real it is, the more accessible we become.” -Laura Henshaw, Keep It Cleaner There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. If you have questions about how to use Instagram to market your business, then you’ll get this answers in this interview, including: Why Instagram and not Facebook? How do you get started on Instagram? How do you interact with your Followers? What makes a successful Instagram account? What’s the best way to increase your Instagram Followers? What posts work best on Instagram? And plenty more ... A big thank-you to my personal trainer Danny Kennedy for introducing me to Stephanie Claire-Smith and Laura Henshaw … two 24-year old Melbourne-based entrepreneurs who have built some significant businesses and revenue streams from their Instagram fame. Stephanie has 1.3M followers and Laura (a part-time Law student) has 160,000. Together, they’ve created the Kick Girls brand which includes a hugely successful online training program for young women. Along with the the Keep It Cleaner range of health food products available in supermarkets nationally. On top of that, Stephanie has launched a bikini brand called Midnight Co and a Sunglasses brand called Soda Shades, and is also an ambassador for Clinique and Bondi Sands. If you’ve ever wondered how to grow and monetise a social media following then you’re going to love this chat. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Keep It Cleaner’s Stephanie Claire-Smith & Laura Henshaw: Focus on engagement, not Followers. And it would seem the best way to do this is follow the theory of TELL don’t SELL. I loved how … when they realised their followers wanted more of them … they created and sold a simple eBook - despite the fact that included a photo of some slimy banana bread! I love how they are crystal clear on their brand and what it stands for. It was a pretty gutsy move for Stephanie to say “No’ to that Diet Tea brand given the amount of coin they were offering for a simple post … however, taking a long-term view there is no doubt that was the right decision. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Two more lucky listeners share what marketing is working for them, and in return I give them a prize or two Resources mentioned: KICGirls official website Stephanie Claire-Smith on Instagram Laura Henshaw on Instagram Keep It Cleaner on Instagram Keep It Cleaner official website Metro Food Co. official website Danny Kennedy personal trainer Please support American Express who make this show possible: American Express Business Explorer Credit Card ... it’s the credit card that ensures your business expenses reward you. How to turn a grudge purchase in to a purchase women love to make with Moxie’s Mia Klitsas | #413
Imagine selling a product that half the world needs. Once they start buying it, they can’t stop, but have to keep on buying it … for decades. It’s taxed unncessarily. You can’t outright advertise it. And the market is dominated by global brands. How’s that for a business and marketing challenge?! It’s a challenge that today’s guest, Mia Klitsas, of feminine hygiene brand Moxie has to take on every day. Join me as she explains exactly how she’s done it, and the wins and losses she’s had along the way. Plus I reward a couple more listeners who share their marketing insights in the Monster Prize Draw. “We’ve learned how to compete on brand – it’s the one thing that, if done right, can’t easily be replicated or taken away from you.” - Mia Klitsas, Moxie There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. If you have questions about how to build a strong brand in a crowded marketplace then you’ll get your answers in this interview, plus Mia and I discuss many other business and marketing related topics: Where’d the idea from Moxie come from? How’d you get it to market? Why the name Moxie? Does she lobby government over the Tampon Tax? How did she secure distribution in Australia’s largest supermarket and pharmacy chains? What has she noticed about the change in consumer buying habits over the years? What’s the most effective marketing Moxie does? Why did she launch a subscription model? Mia is a Melbourne based entrepreneur with a passion for social entrepreneurship and women's rights. Her Moxie brand of women's personal care products can be found at Woolworths, Coles, Priceline and Chemist Warehouse. And in an Australian first, Mia recently launched the cheekily named Moxie Box Club, a fully customisable online subscription service for women’s personal care products. What Mia has achieved is no mean feat given just how dominated the women’s personal care category is by huge global brands with extremely deep pockets. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Moxie’s Mia Klitsas: I love how Mia said she’s a big fan of failure. As she said, when confronted with it, you should ask yourself “WHat’s the worst thing that could happen?” I couldn’t agree more with hyer view that we should all work harder at injecting massive amounts of personality in to your marketing messages. If you want to see how this is done then check out the video at the bottom of Moxie.com.au - it’s hilarious. I’m impressed that Mia is so active responding to her tribe on social media. I think the big lesson here is that business owners should get more involved at the coal face with their customers. Sports Illustrated was the inspiration for this clever email marketing strategy that lead to a 7-figure business sale | #412
Dan Faggella attributes a large part of the seven-figure sales price he recently achieved for his business to a clever email marketing strategy he learnt by studying how Sports Illustrated go about it. In today’s episode, Dan walks us through exactly how he used email marketing to nurture a huge list and a successful business. Plus we catch up with Tom O’Toole, Australia’s craziest baker, give away more prizes to some clever listeners and announce some big news direct from the Australian Podcast Awards. “I wanted to grow my business as fast as I could. I wanted to get it to the point that someone would want to pay a lot for it. I knew email marketing was my weapon of choice, so I looked around to see who was doing it extremely well. Who was making a billion dollars from it in annual revenue. And Sports Illustrated was first to mind!” -Dan Faggella, Tech Emergence There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. If you have questions about how to do email marketing successfully, then you’ll get the answers in this interview, including: The rules for writing an autoresponder email series The 3 key ingredients of any automated email campaign How to borrow winning email marketing from the biggest player in your industry How to write a weekly newsletter that gets you sales And how to get into the habit of writing weekly emails even if you’re not a writer Dan first appeared way back in episode 160, when he was a martial arts champion who’d sold his gym to focus on building an online training business for up and coming martial artists. Well, he built that business to the point where it was generating $2M annually, then recently sold it for seven figures, attributing a large part of that successful sale to his email marketing strategies. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Tech Emergence’s Dan Faggella: I love how Dan looked to Sports Illustrated for inspiration. Given they were already nailing their email marketing, why try and reinvent the wheel. So, for your current marketing challenge, choose a big brand that’s doing it well and copy them! I also love Dan’s approach to the first email you send in your autoresponder series - keep your headline fairly ‘vanilla’ to avoid scaring people off (after all, they're just getting to know you), make it educational, provide solid social proof of any claims and a strong call to action, and a compelling reason to open the next email. And I love how Dan reached out to me for a second interview in order to share his learnings. He had nothing to sell. He just wanted to pay it forward and make a difference. So much so that he’s even created a fantastic blog post detailing exactly how he used the Sports Illustrated email marketing model. A new way to use video to market your small business with Video Hero’s Jules Watkins | #411
Ex-MTV director Jules Watkins loves the fact that small business owners can create the most amazing marketing and sales videos by simply using their iPhone. He’s been talking about this ever since the first iPhone came out. In today’s episode, Jules reveals why Vlog style videos are working so well and how your business can benefit from them. Plus Melbourne SEO Service’s Dave Jenyns gets his back up with business owners who aren’t updating their CMS and plug-in (how geeky!) and I announce two more winners in our Monster Prize Draw. “There’s a ton of video being produced, so the question is what’s going to be catchy and what’s going to be different. People are expecting to see say a video of an accountant in a suit, but instead wouldn’t it be interesting to see them on a surfboard?! This is what we call a pattern-interrupt.” -Jules Watkins, Get Video Hero There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Rapid growth attributed to an unwavering respect for and understanding of the customer with Prospa’s Beau Bertoli | #410
When Beau Bertoli decided to build a business putting loans into the hands of small business owners, he and his co-founder, Greg Moshal, both had firsthand knowledge of their potential customers' pain points. So they decided to knock on the doors of small business owners in Sydney’s key shopping strips and ask them if what they were thinking was on the money. Their idea was quickly validated and Prospa was born. This is the story of how they then built Prospa in to the fastest growing business in the Asia Pacific region in just a few short years. “It’s easy to send money out in our business; we just need to make sure we would get it back! We were able to put up a really good base of initial customers, lend out a few million dollars … and as we were getting repayment history from them, we kept on asking what did you like? What didn't you like? What do you wish we were providing that you weren’t? The secret to working smarter not harder with Your Empire’s Chris Gray | #409
Chris Gray owns Your Empire, a property buyer’s agent for the well-healed. After spending the early part of his career working for a global accounting form, he finally made the break to run his own business at the age of 31, when he retired from working for the man, and started to invest in real estate. Before long he started reaping the rewards of those smart money decisions and has never looked back. He’s built a $15M property portfolio of his own, works only a few hours a day, travels the world (for free) often and has pretty much worked out how to work smart, not hard. Plus in episode 409 of your favourite marketing podcast, you’ll discover why too much content is not a great idea, more listeners win big in the Monster Prize Draw, and we check in with Tom O’Toole (Australia’s favourite baker) who’s embarking on one crazy road trip! “If you go out for coffee with someone for an hour, you build a certain relationship. You go and spend four hours playing golf with them, you build an even better relationship and you breakdown a lot of barriers. You go drinking for 10 to 12 hours on my boat and you break down a lot of barriers!” -Chris Gray, Your Empire There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. If you have questions about working smarter and not harder, then you’ll get this answers in this interview, including: Where did the idea for Your Empire come from? How to network effectively? How to make staff love working for you? How to fly free in the pointy end of the plane? Why and how to make marketing fun? And plenty more ... A little bit more about today’s guest Chris Gray started investing in property at the age of 22. He retired from full time work as an accountant at Deloitte at 31. Now 46, Chris has $15m+ of property in his personal portfolio; and runs Your Empire, a buyers agency that builds property portfolios for time-poor professionals, just like he did for himself. Your Empire buys 1-2 properties a week, and spends up to $5m a year on renovations for its clients. Chris also hosts the Smart Investing show on Sky News. He travel overseas 10-15 times a year, and is into car racing, motor yachts and flying choppers. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Your Empire’s Chris Gray: I love Chris’s approach to networking where in a room of 100 prospects he’d prefer two deep conversations than 98 shallow ones. Chris is the master seeder … constantly inserting (quite subtley) points about his business into the conversation. I think we all need to get out and smell the roses more often. Get an Amex card! Motor racing legend Steve Richards nearly bought a fast food franchise before honouring his true business calling | #408
Steve Richards is Australian motor racing royalty with four Bathurst titles under his belt. He’s also a small business owner who came perilously close to becoming a fast food franchisee, before he and his wife realised that there was much stronger business calling for them both. So join me as Steve shares his journey from being an employee for other people’s racing teams, to starting his own small business in Steve Richards Motorsports. Plus in episode 408 of your favourite marketing podcast, I reveal a simple hack for helping Google love your website, and two more lucky winners are announced in the Monster Prize Draw. Steve Richards shares loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Here’s just some of what I asked him: Your Dad won Bathurst seven times. What was the biggest lesson you learnt from him that’s helped in business? In 2010, you came within hours of buying a KFC franchise. What was the appeal? And why did you pull out? How do you turn your skill for driving ridiculously fast in to a business? What differentiates you from other drivers who have tried to do that? How has being a celebrity helped you in business? What skills have you carried across from top-level racing in to running a business? What’s the worst accident you’ve ever had? How did you regain your confidence? You’ve worked for a lot of big brands - Ford, Holden, Laser Plumbing & Electrical - what have you learnt from them? What’s the secret to endurance racing? How do you market Steve Richards Motorsports? Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. A little bit about today’s guest Steve Richards is a racing car legend turned small business owner. Now I don’t use the word legend lightly, but this guy is - he’s won the Bathurst 1000 four times, and his Dad Jim Richards won it a whopping seven times! All up, Steve has had 57 podium finishes. Basically, if you’re an Aussie and not even in to motor racing, Steve’s face will be familiar to you. I first met Steve way back on episode 318 when I was invited to a corporate race day by long time listener and owner of Laser Plumbing & Electrical, Steve Kiel … during that episode I explored whether race car sponsorship was worthwhile … and a part of that exploration was a hot lap in Steve’s racing Porsche! Steve’s business story is fascinating how he went from being an employee of other people’s race teams to now having his own in Steve Richards Motorsport, in which he found himself being a Jack of all trades - truck driver, manager, marketer and even race car driver! One aspect I found particularly interesting was the fact that he and his wife Angela were just minutes away from signing a contract to become a KFC franchisee before realising their true business calling. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Steve Richards of Steve Richards Racing: Find time for ideas - read more books, listen to more podcasts, attend workshops and events - well done to the nine iof you who’ve joined my Deep Dive Mastermind. Always be on the lookout for opportunities to be more efficient. A few months back, I did a complete audit of how I put an episode of this show together, and I saved myself at least 90-minutes each week. Plus I’ve captured all the steps in SystemHub.com Be a Connector. This may or may not be in your nature, but give it a go anyway. It feels so good to connect two people who you know can benefit from knowing each other. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in episode 408 you’ll also discover: Melbourne SEO Services Dave Jenyns reveals a little known hack that will ensure Google loves your website And I give away more prizes in the SBBM Monster Prize Draw, to two inspiring listeners who share something they’ve actioned from listening to this show and how it’s impacted their business Oh, and I announce a new prize worth $2,500! How using a spokesperson in their marketing has proved invaluable for Terrain Tamer 4WD | #403
Using a spokesperson in your marketing is a great idea if you don’t want to be in front of the camera or behind the microphone (which BTW many business owners don't). In fact, this marketing strategy has worked so well for Terrain Tamer 4WD that they now have three spokespeople appearing in a series of very helpful videos aimed at helping their customers make a more informed purchase decision. Plus I’ll give you good reason to ignore those spammy emails selling cheap SEO services. And listener James Rae shares with us a very personal story that has a very happy ending. “I have a theory in our marketing which is ‘It must not be vanilla’. So we can all sit back and not take a risk. Or we can stick our neck out and try something different … and get noticed as a result.” -Brent Hutchinson, Terrain Tamer 4WD There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. It employs 135 staff, and recently opened their fourteenth brand in PNG. Brent originally appeared on this show way back in episode 70 where he was having great success producing DVDs for insertion in to a national 4WD magazine. Now he’s back to share how using a spokesperson in their marketing has been a great decision on so many levels. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Terrain Tamer 4WD’s Brent Hutchinson: I love the line “Terrain Tamer Strong.” It’s so emotive. “Don’t be vanilla in your marketing.” What a great philosophy. More business owners should adopt it. Now! “Is your marketing strategy for the next 5 minutes or the next 5 years?” Too many business owners are thinking way too short term. Avoid advertorial. “Tell, don’t sell.” The handwritten letter to his stockists was a simple, genius move to get their attention, and show they genuinely care. Behind-the-scenes with serial entrepreneur Robbie Ball of Uncle Jack Watches and Athletikan sneakers | #402
Today we catch up with 24 year old, serial entrepreneur Robbie Ball who ran two businesses whilst at school. One in which attempted to take on compression clothing giant Skins! He’s built and sold a web design business, and is now the founder of Uncle Jacks Watches and boutique sneaker brand Athletikan. He loves the hustle of business, and is working hard at perfecting a launch strategy he calls Hype Marketing which has seen him attract over $100,000 in sales on day one of a product launch. Plus I help a listener attract more clients to his business, and Dave Jenyns shares a simple strategy to create content that will position you as an authority. “I need to control my competitive spirit. It’s not going away any time soon, so I just need to control it. If I try to do too many things, I can’t be the best I can be. The underlying thing is you need to be passionate about being an entrepreneur, otherwise it’s difficult to be the best at something. I try and stay in my land and push the boundaries.” -Robbie Ball, Uncle Jacks Watches There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button above to listen now, or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about entrepreneurs, starting a product business, launching a new product or service, then you’ll get this answers in this interview, including: What was Robbie like as a teenager? What is Hype Marketing? What is great about being an entrepreneur? How do you successfully launch something? Where did the idea for Uncle Jacks Watches come from? Where did the idea for Athletikan sneakers come from? How and why to use social influencers to sell? How important is marketing in growing a brand? And plenty more ... 24 year old serial entrepreneur, Robbie Ball. A big thank-you to listeners Dan Kennedy and Daniel Izzo who independently brought Robbie to my attention. By the time Robbie finished school he’d already started a shoe business, and had had a crack at manufacturing compression sportswear to compete with global brand Skins! In first year uni he started a web design business that he sold after 3-years. Six years on he’s the founder of Uncle Jacks Watches and sneaker brand Athletikan. He also is about to launch a third business in a couple of months. The guys a freak and has a wonderful respect for marketing …. Hype Marketing to be specific. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Robbie Ball of Uncle Jack's Watches: Robbie uses an apps to capture all his ideas. And you should, too. The simple Notes app on your smartphone is fine, but you can step it up to Evernote which lets you capture not just words, but photos, video and audio. Or you could go old school, and carry a journal around with you. Robbie’s comment around putting viral marketing in to perspective. Whilst it would be great to create a blog post or video or podcast episode that gets shared by millions, it’s also a solid outcome if your content is shared by hundreds. What’s that saying “Shoot for the stars and you might just land on the moon!” Put more effort into launching (or re-launching) parts of your business. A launch is a great opportunity to create excitement and anticipation around what you’ve got to offer, so make the most of them. It could be for a new product line, a new service offering or even a new division of your business. ‘Shi* The Bed’ creator Renae Bunster left a career in journalism to create what is fast becoming Australia’s leading hot chilli sauce | #401
Today we catch up with Renae Bunster who, on a chilled out holiday to South America, came up with the idea to create a hot chilli sauce like no other. In fact, it’s called Shit The Bed and after just two years, Renae has left her journalism career and is selling $8,000 worth of this mouth torturing delicacy per day! Also in episode 401 of your favourite marketing podcast you’ll discover the importance of suburb pages on your website, I help listener Adam buy an online business and listener Ryan helps past guest Wally Khwally develop strong partnership strategy. Big show, huh?! “My husband would sit in the lounge room boxing up bottles of sauce, and I’d be in the kitchen all day long. We’d used every last glass bottle in Western Australia, every last chilli in Western Australia, and we thought ‘OK, we have to stop. We need to run a crowdfunding campaign’. We needed to get a factory because the sky really is the limit with this.” -Renae Bunster, Bunsters Hot Sauce There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Ex journo Reana Bunster who during a massive holiday to Mexico, Belize and Costa Rica fell in love with their delicious fresh hot sauces. Upon returning home to Perth, she couldn’t find anything that hit the spot, so she felt compelled to make her own. Friends who'd never even liked chilli before were suddenly kicking down her door for the stuff. It very quickly turned into a thriving business, with Renae sending her sauce all over Australia. Things got serious when she raised $250,000 through a crowdfunding campaign allowing her to produce and sell much larger quantities. Her hot sauce is called Bunsters … and her flagship product is called Shit The Bed! Bunsters is now the #1 selling hot sauce on Amazon behind the tried and tested Sriracha. And she’s doing a lazy $8,000 per day in sales! Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Renae Bunster of Bunsters Hot Sauce: You can be the cheapest or the best. You can’t be everything to everyone. The minute you try to be then you become nothing to no one. If you’re looking to start a new business, or maybe just a side hustle, I love Renae’s advice about identifying something that people are passionate about. Then, if you get your offer right, you’ll have an interest tribe. Know your customer intimately. What about the way Renae described Dave … could you describe your ideal customer in such detail? How community notice boards can improve your local area marketing efforts | #399
Joe Dorfman and Joel Abel founders of Notice Board Systems which are those community noticeboards you may have seen in your local shopping centre, often located outside the supermarket. A place for local businesses to promote themselves, and for locals to sell household items. Now, I always assumed these notice boards were simply put there by the local shopping centre management as a community service; however, it’s actually a real business making some pretty good coin! There’s 650 notice boards around Australia and they claim to be reaching 6,000,000 customers each week! So, curiosity got the better of me and I had to find out more. “If you want to capture a local market then a community notice board is the way to go. It becomes a local business’s store front … and they provide a great opportunity to highlight promotions and their overall involvement in the community.” - Joe Dorfman, Notice Board Systems There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. How to motivate employees in 5 easy steps with Jenn Lim of Delivering Happiness | #395
Having interviewed hundreds of successful business owners, I can confidently say that knowing how to motivate employees is their #1 ongoing concern. If that’s you, then you’re going to love this chat with Jenn Lim of San Francisco-based agency Delivering Happiness. Jenn goes into great detail about how to attract and retain great staff, by sharing the five (tried and trusted) ways to deliver happiness in any business. “Happier employees equal happier customers equal successful companies (and more meaningful lives). And there’s 5 ways any business can deliver happiness. 1. Deliver happiness to your employees first. 2. Establish (or revisit) your company’s purpose statement. 3. Establish (or revisit) your company’s core values. 4. Building meaningful relationships and WOWs across your ecosystem. And 5. Give your employees more control.” - Jenn Lim, Delivering Happiness There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about how to motivate your staff then you’ll get this answers in this interview: What is the thinking behind delivering happiness? How do I overcome the soft nature of the delivering happiness business model? How do I attract and retain great staff? How do I create WOW experiences for my clients? How important is to have a purpose statement and set of core values? Should I give my staff more control? Jenn is the CEO and CHO (Chief Happiness Officer) of Delivering Happiness, a San Francisco-based agency she and Tony Hsieh (CEO of Zappos, the world’s largest online shoe store) co-founded to inspire science-based happiness, passion and purpose in the workplace. Tony wrote the seminal book on this topic, called Delivering Happiness, which has sold literally millions and millions of copies worldwide. The premise of delivering happiness is simple. Happier employees = happier customers = successful companies (and more meaningful lives). And she’s got the science to prove it. Jenn has been a consultant with Zappos from its start-up days in 2003 to the $2B business it is today. She created the Zappos Culture Book, an embodiment of how companies can use happiness as a business model to increase productivity and profitability … and now she’s here to share her top 5 ways you can deliver happiness in your business. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Delivering Happiness’s Jenn Lim: Often the things that will have the greatest positive impact on your business, are not that complicated to implement. They require a level of courage to implement, but once you break through that barrier, the rest is easy. I love the whole WOW thing. And the B.U.D. approach for delivering WOW experiences - either be the Best, the most Unique, or be Different. And remember, this applies to employees, suppliers, partners and even your customers! Deliver happiness to your employees first. WOW! How counter intuitive is that. What about those precious customers? Like I said, delivering happiness takes courage. I suggest you find it. How to create amazing customer experiences using customer relationship management (CRM) software with Salesforce’s Jeremy Smith | #394
If you’re a business owner still trying to manage customers with spreadsheets and diary entries, then you’ll love this chat I have with Salesforce’s Jeremy Smith about how customer relationship management (CRM) software (like Salesforce) ensures you create amazing customer experiences. Plus I’ll show you how to create an effective voicemail greeting and we revisit a past episode where we covered the clever use of social media. “People are loyal to an experience, not a brand. So if the experience you’re offering your customers isn’t great, then it’s not doing your brand any favours. CRM software can ensure this doesn’t happen!” -Jeremy SmithSalesforce There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about customer relationship management software then you’ll get the answers in this interview: What is CRM? Why does a small business need CRM software? How does CRM help me create amazing customer experiences? What are the key features and benefits of a CRM tool like Salesforce? How can I build my email database using CRM software? How can I personalise my marketing? Can CRM software help me manage my social media activity? How can I handle customer complaints using a CRM tool? And plenty more ... Jeremy Smith is the Regional VP of the Marketing Cloud at Salesforce. Whether it be in retail to blur the lines between digital and physical or moving from treating an audience as passive recipients to including them in the business’s story, he’s passionate about seeing small business embrace the power of customer relationship management (CRM) software. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Salesforce’s Jeremy Smith: Loved this quote of Jeremy’s - “These days people are loyal to an experience not a brand.” Use all the tools available to you to create a world-class customer experience and you’ll have more enquiry, you’ll close more sales, and customers will talk about you to others … you’ll be shareable. Personalised marketing … It’s here, and it’s ridiculously accessible. Your mass email blasts should start with the person’s name, your sales staff should be easily able to react to client milestones, you should be able to see where each individual customer is in their buying journey with you. Time to throw away the spreadsheets and diary entries, and step up to a CRM like Salesforce. If that still freaks you out, then by all means start with an email marketing tool like MailChimp, and customer support software like ZenDesk, but don’t leave it too long. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: I’ll show you how to make your voicemail greeting a lot more effective. If you’ve ever wondered if radio advertising works, and if it does, how it works, then you’re in for an absolute treat. I’ll also show you how to make a great first impression with your new clients. The success of Sunraysia Prune Juice is a 100% the result of our radio advertising ” -Dan Presser, Sunraysia Prune Juice There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about how to create radio ads that cut through and sell then you’ll get the answers in this interview as Dan Presser goes deep into his love of radio: Why choose radio instead of TV or newspapers? What makes a great radio ad? How do you measure the success of radio advertising? How much should you spend on radio advertising? How do you come up with ideas for radio ads? Why do radio ads work? He’s also the creative engine behind the writing, production and reading of the much discussed radio ads for Sunraysia Natural Prune Juice and Blue Banner Pickled Onions. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Dan Presser: Radio advertising works best when you create ads with cut through. They clearly don’t have to be the fanciest ads going around, with huge production budgets … they just need to stand out in a very crowded market place. A great lesson for any marketing message, really! Don’t take negative feedback to heart. Maybe even welcome it if you’ve got a thick enough skin! Joke eBay video selling girlfriend’s old Honda goes viral | #391
Welcome to a bonus episode of The Small Business Big Marketing Show. I’ve just come across this video that’s gone viral - it involves a guy out of the States who’s created what looks like a TV commercial for a luxury car, but is actually helping to sell his girlfriend’s beaten up old Honda on eBay! It was produced by Max Lanman who's a LA-based writer and director. He explains why he did it early up in the interview, suffice to say that at the time of me going to air with this story, the video (in its first 10-days) has had over six million views, Max has had hundreds of thousands of dollars of media coverage and he hasn’t slept for over a week! This is a really cool story, with a mountain of marketing learnings for us all. How a small blog turned into a $20 million toxin-free beauty business with Nourished Life’s Irene Falcone | #389
Today we’re joined by toxin-free product activist and founder of Nourished Life, Irene Falcone, who’ll walk us through how starting a simple Wordpress blog lead to the creation of a business that in its third year is turning over $20 million. “It was a shocking thing for a female to throw away $5,000 worth of cosmetics, and to then start blogging about just how bad they were for you. It was such an obvious thing to do for me .. express my opinions about something I felt so passionate about. And that’s how the Nourished Life business started! ” - Irene FalconeNourished Life There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about how to turn a blog into a big business then you’ll love this interview: How did blogging enable Irene to start Nourished Life? How did the eCommerce store begin? How has she managed to create such a strong social media following? How does she convert her social media engagement into sales? How did she manage to turnover $20 million per year after just 3-years? How does Iren get clients to stick? How has Nourished Life got so many 5-star Facebook reviews? Around three years ago, Irene Falcone started feeling really tired all the time. It got to the point one morning where she couldn’t walk up the single flight of stairs to her office. Her legs felt as heavy as two bags of lead. She sat on the steps, took a body lotion out of her bag and started rubbing it into her legs, and for the first time in her life she wondered... what exactly was in this lotion she was putting on my body?? When she got home that night she scooped up all my beauty products and starting looking up all their ingredients. She discovered that she was applying about 500 chemicals a day to my body. She’s no chemist, but she knew how to research. And she wanted to know everything about these chemicals. That’s when she started blogging. And the rest, as they say, is history! Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Nourished Life’s Irene Falcone: Well, I guess there’s something to be said about listening to your customers! Despite Irene’s obsession about listening to and actioning everything they fed back, I do think there’s a balance to be struck between listening to them versus listening to your gut. Make sure your significant other is on board with what you’re doing. It makes life a whole lot easier. Blog. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Start a blog. Get clear on your editorial mission and start a blog. Become an opinion leader. Don’t know how to do that then buy my book The Boomerang Effect on my website. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Will It Blend star Tom Dickson: There’s no such thing as a boring product or service. All too often, I hear business owners whinging that it’s hard to market what they sell because it’s boring. Accountants, are you listening?! If that’s you, then spend some quality time brainstorming with your team about how to inject some excitement into your business. I love the idea of having a desk with glass on top where Tom’s engineers scrawl ideas and build on each other’s thinking. I use a whiteboard for this exact thing, and couldn’t live without it. Doing something extreme or out-of-the-box will get you noticed, and create what I call a hook for you to build your brand from. As Tom quoted, his Will It Blend videos were ranked by Ad Age as the #1 viral marketing videos in the world, plus BlendTec is a case study in 38 business books around the world. How to create a happy business that thrives with retired “crazy” dentist Paddi Lund | | #387
Dr Paddi Lund is the self-confessed "Crazy Dentist" from Queensland, Australia. "Crazy" because he did so many outrageous things in his practice and because his success defies all conventional business paradigms. He built a 'By Invitation Only' business that thrived despite the fact that he locked his front door, took down all his signs and removed his name from the phone book! “My brain works differently to many people’s, in that I often see a strange answer that other people don’t see. My strange answer for this situation was to get happy. The insight I had was “I’m unhappy!” It sounds simple however many people don’t come to that. They think “Oh, I’m working too hard, have too many responsibilities, the economic situation is bad, I’m in a difficult profession …” But what it boils down to is “I am unhappy.” - Paddi Lund There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about how to create a happy business then you’ll get this answers in this interview: Why Paddi walked away from his business when he could have sold it for a fortune Why you should put aside time for introspection What caused Paddi to hit rock bottom, and how he came back? How small things affect our happiness Seven standards for happiness in your business How to make your customers feel special by allowing them to do things for you Why his colleagues thought that Paddi’s model was arrogant (and why he didn’t care) Why you shouldn’t see your service as a piece of work (or price it that way) What Paddi was really selling (hint: it wasn’t a product or service) Transaction vs Transformation in marketing what you do Why you don’t have to run the same type of business as everybody else As a result of Paddi’s unconventional business ways: He worked only 22 hours a week yet makes 3 times more than the majority of his colleagues His team loved him, and his customers were clamouring to buy his services But more than that, Paddi loved coming to work and had a rich, fulfilling life as a result All this from focussing on just one aspect of business: not marketing nor advertising, his products, services nor even profits ... but HAPPINESS!!! Business Happiness, to be precise! Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with retired dentist Paddi Lund: Put aside time for introspection and ask yourself the question “What would make my business a happier place to be?” Have the courage to implement a marketing idea that may seem crazy. On the surface, Padi taking down the signage and sacking a large portion of his client base seems whacky … but it worked! I love the Dental Bun idea. How can you integrate smell into your business? It’s by far the most underutilised of the five senses in marketing, so it lends itself to helping you create a strong point-of-difference. For someone who has (on occasion) mastered the art of procrastination, it’s refreshing to hear her views. The easiest way to find a niche is to identify what you truly love, and build a business around it. Buy what you sell. I often listen to other marketing and business podcasts to see how they go about it - It gives me a chance to see how high (or low, in some cases) the bar is, and what I need to do to stay ahead of the game. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with OrbitKey inventor and crowdfunding expert Rex Kuo: A great product or service offering is your best marketing … hands down. Despite having a great product, don’t sit back and wait for success. Market. Market. Market. Get out there. I loved the fact that Rex and Charles headed to trade shows in NYC and London. Many would see that as extravagant. I see it as smart. I hope they used their Amex! This simple Facebook video strategy saved a fledgling BBQ chicken shop from going under | #384
Today we literally go behind-the-scenes with BBQ chicken store owner Wally Khawli whose simple Facebook video strategy has saved his fledgling business from going under. “When you see his videos you can see that he is genuine, nothing is written down, nothing is prepared, he just comes out with it. People see that. They get a laugh out of it. Then they come in, they want to take photos with him, SnapChats ... They then try his food and they love it!” - - Joe Khawli (Wally’s Dad), Mama’s BBQ Chicken & Salad Bar There’s loads more tips and insights just like this, along with answers to questions that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. Why did Wally almost close the business last Christmas? How to turn a learning difficulty into a positive? What should I do if I’m thinking of closing my business? How can I use Facebook videos to get more customers? What’s the secret to appearing in videos for my business? Wally Khawli owns Mama’s BBQ Chicken & Salad Bar located in an outer suburb of Melbourne. Nothing fancy, just a family run take-away business selling chickens, souvlakis and the occasional salad! Unlike most guests, Wally didn’t have a bio that I could use to introduce him. He’s got no fancy qualifications. He’s got a learning disability that could have held him back if he’d let it. But what he has got is a big heart and a burning passion for what he does. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Wally Khawli of Mama’s BBQ Chicken & Salad Bar: Honour your strengths and weaknesses, then back yourself. Wally did. He put his learning difficulties aside, identified what he loved (chicken and making people happy) and was he was especially good at (being on camera), then went for it. Stop waiting for the right light, or the right hair do, or the right anything! Wally’s videos are far from polished. His Dad Joe films them on an iPhone, the music sometimes distorts, there’s customers coming in and out of the shop - there’s plenty of reasons to wait for that right moment. But instead, Wally goes for it! In a world of social media, we’re actually pretty forgiving when it comes to video production … so focus on creating great content. Work hard at maintaining the momentum you create with your marketing. It will be easy for Wally to get swept up in all the initial excitement that he’s created … the question remains to see if he can maintain it for the long term. That doesn’t mean keep doing more of the same … but it does mean evolving, doing things better, trying new ideas. I love the fact that he’s already selling merchandise! But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: I share another low cost marketing idea that’ll get you responding! And we go back into the vault, revisiting a killer moment during a chat I had with the world’s leading SEO expert Rand Fishkin Please support these businesses who make this show possible: FastMail - Free 30-day trial plus 15% off your first year. If you have questions about how to turn a podcast into a business that pays you real money, then you’ll get the answers in this interview: How do I monetise a podcast? How do I run a business at the same time as getting my podcast off the ground? Is it realistic to think I could make a living from podcasting? How do I grow my audience to a point that partners / advertisers would be interested? Is advertising the only way to generate income from podcasting? A little bit about my two guests (as detailed in their own hilarious bios): Lucy Race - Lucy is a 12 time premiership supporter, mother, business owner and trainer for the SPJFC Under 11s. A prolific letter writer, media monitor and soap box dweller, Lucy is thrilled to find another vehicle for her opinions. Lucy is passionate about all codes of football. Her two dogs, Archie Thompson and Jarryd Roughead concur. Felicity Race - Felicity is a business owner, football lover and mother of three boys who lives with the daily challenge of her kids barracking for Essendon. Running her own business has turned out to be fortuitous as podcasting, occasional writing for The Guardian and watching every sport possible makes her largely unemployable. In 2016, Felicity learned how to bounce a footy which was the pinnacle of her football career. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Lucy & Felicity Race: Don’t be afraid to look to podcasting as a whole new business. I did and it’s continues to be an amazing ride. If you want to know how I’ve monetised it then go back and listen to episode 351. Nothing’s impossible. If you had told me that there’s a group of six people successfully producing a weekly audio program, I would have said that’s way too many. It couldn’t work. Clearly it can, and The Outer Sanctum are proof of that. Partnerships. Partnerships. Partnerships. I’ve rattled on about this ALOT, I know. But the power of a strategic partnership in growing any business can’t be understated. Go back and listen to episode 369 to learn how to do it. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: How I get more listeners to my podcast You’ll discover how to ramp up the human side of your business And we go back into the vault, revisiting a chat I had with a Stephen Byron whose family built and own Australia’s most awarded airport! King of casual dining, Chris Lucas, on how to successfully promote a restaurant (or anything else!) | #382
In episode 382 Melbourne’s culinary king, Chris Lucas, takes us behind-the-scenes of how he’s successfully built and promoted some of Australia’s most exciting and interesting dining experiences. This is for anyone (not just restaurateurs) wanting to build a business that stands out from the crowd. “I don’t get intellectually interested in what other people have done … my idea is about capturing what I think is right, and try to be creative and do something different. We’ve established a set of brands that do that, that are about being innovative and that create a level of excitement, and as a result, a lot of excitement. That’s what I think we should all be interested in.” - Chris Lucas, The Lucas Group There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You’ll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about how to grow and market your business successfully then you’ll get this answers in this interview: How do I find a gap in the market place? Why shouldn’t I just copy my competitors? How do I innovate in my business? Why & how should I challenge the conventions of my industry? How do I come up with a business model relevant to today’s customers? Where and how do I look for opportunities? Chris’s successes in starting and promoting restaurants is amazing. As well as the super-successful Chin Chin, he has a stable of some of Melbourne’s most popular eateries: Baby Pizza and Japanese/Korean-inspired Kong BBQ in Richmond, as well as Hawker Hall, a food and beer hall in Windsor, where the hip and the hungry queue to get in. And he’s recently opened Kisume, an upmarket Japanese Korean dining experience. Here’s what caught my attention from my chat with Chris Lucas: Go where the demand is and find a gap in the market ... learn to see opportunities where others don't. In doing so, avoid doing ‘me too’. As Chris said, “doing me-too doesn’t intellectually interest him!” Come up with a product and business model more relevant to today's customer. Sometimes we do things just because that's how everyone does them … maybe it’s time to break a few rules and do things differently? Innovate and constantly evolve your business model. Look for fun places to take your clients, suppliers and staff. This is not something Chris and I spoke about, but that chat reminded me of an idea I shared in a past episode, where I suggested us business owners should never eat alone; or, at least once a week we should get out of the office and have a business lunch with someone. I’m catching up with an overseas listener for dinner tonight! But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, also in this episode: You’ll discover where to look for ideas to get more customers - and it’s not where you think The importance of owning your brand’s personality is made crystal clear And we revisit an episode in which my Joep Pennartz built an entire business called Shacky around #JOMO - the joy of missing out! Chemist Warehouse Founder Jack Gance on how he’s built a retail empire | #381
Chemist Warehouse founder Jack Gance is Australian retailing royalty, with a personal wealth of $319M. Listen in as he reveals how he (and other family members) have built the empire. “The average pharmacist hates us because we have effected the whole margin structure in pharmacy. If they compete with us 100%, if they match our prices, they’ll go broke. They want 35% margin. If they match our prices, they won't even cover their rent. So, they pretend, or they just try to provide better service. So we’re not really liked in the industry.” - Jack Gance, Co-Founder, Chemist Warehouse Jack really does stir the pot in this very insightful and honest chat as he takes us behind the scenes of how he and his brother built their pharmacy empire. Hit the PLAY button above to hear the full interview, where Jack Gance also shares: How an advertising contra deal enabled the creation of three iconic Aussie brands in Le Specs, Le Tan & Australis How building these brands funded the early years of the pharmacy empire How to find your strategic advantage How systems enable them to open 40 stores per year, each one taking only 10-days to set-up, with budgeted turnover of $10M each! What he believes the real definition of an entrepreneur is A little bit more about Jack Gance Jack qualified as a pharmacist in 1967 and alongside his brother, the pair purchased their first pharmacy around that time. In the 1970s and 80s, the Gance brothers established the iconic Le Specs, Le Tan and Australis brands before selling them in order to build their pharmacy empire which is now worth well in excess of a billion dollars thanks to the iconic My Chemist brand with 60 stores nationally, and Chemist Warehouse with 350 stores. Jack’s personal net worth was reported in 2016’s BRW Top 200 Rich List at $391 million. He is a stalwart of the Australian retail landscape, and is also the founder of the Family Business Association of Australia. “A true entrepreneur does not take risks. They mitigate them.” - Jack Gance, Chemist Warehouse Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Chemist Warehouse founder Jack Gance: The advertising contra deal that he struck with an advertising agency in order to promote Le Specs. Without it, he and his brother couldn’t have built that brand to the iconic brand it became. What mutually beneficial contra deals could you strike? The importance of systems. We’ve covered this a few times on previous episodes, but it can’t be overlooked. Jack’s opening 40 stores a year, each one taking only 10 days to set up! You can’t do that without impeccable systems. The haters gunna hate. Although he only briefly touched on it during the interview, I’m guessing Jack and his team endured quite a lot of criticism as they established Australia’s largest chain of discount chemists. Whilst I’m the first to support small business, and hate seeing the little guy get buried by the big guys, I’m also a big supporter of seeing small business grow big … into the empire they deserve to be ;0) But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, you’ll also: Discover how to break through procrastination and get your next marketing idea off the ground Revisit a recent episode in which we caught up with Peter Hitchener, Australia’s #1 TV newsreader who’s nailing social media Other resources mentioned: Le Tan TV commercial Le Specs TV commercial Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont’s 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you’ll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. Rand Fishkin on how to optimise your podcast show notes so you rank on page 1 of Google | #380
Today we’re joined by SEO doyon, Rand Fishkin from Moz, who’ll walk you step-by-step through how to create and optimise podcast show notes, blog posts and web pages so that they rank well in Google. “Unique value is something Google is really seeking out. So if you go and look at the results for the top 10 for a keyword that you really care about, and you can identify a hole, a gap, something that no-one else is filling where you can provide the value that no-one else has, that is a great opportunity to get ranking in Google.” - Rand Fishkin, Moz There’s loads more tips and insights just like this that can 10X your SEO results. Hit the PLAY button above to hear the full interview. If you have any of the following questions about how to how to optimise your podcast show notes (or simply want to improve your Google rankings) you’ll get the answers in this interview: How do I rank on page 1 of Google in 2017 and beyond? How do I create the ultimate show notes for a podcast? How do I get my blog post to rank well? How do I identify the best keyword to use? Do I need to keyword stuff my posts? What can I do off-page to improve my SEO? What is metadata and how critical is it to optimising my podcast show notes? Is it still possible for a small business to rank on page 1 of Google? What are the key components of SEO in 2017? BTW, Rand Fishkin (in my humble opinion) is the world’s leading expert on SEO. Going by the ludicrous title, Wizard of Moz, he’s the founder of the SEO software startup Moz, host of Whiteboard Friday (a must watch) and co-author of a pair of books on SEO. Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Moz’s Rand Fishkin: Getting on page 1 of Google is not magic and any business can do it - As Rand says, it’s an art and a science. Yes, there is some work to be done, yes it does get detailed, and yes it gets a little geeky. But why go to the trouble of creating a website full of helpful content, whether that be podcast show notes, blog posts or whatever, if you don’t optimise it for Google. My advice is to understand then outsource this component. The embedded Tweet - What a great idea. You have to do this retrospectively, once the podcast show notes go live, but that’s cool. Here’s one I prepared earlier … go on, go ahead and Tweet it … you know you want to :) Links to external resources - When you recommend a great third party service, it builds trust in you as the place to go. Such links are not ‘doors out’ of your website. Just be sure to have the links open in a new tab. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, you’ll also: Discover how to write great mini-stories to help you sell more products Revisit a grab from a past episode in which Gelato Messina’s Declan Lee (Australia’s best Gelato maker) explained how he’s disrupting a very old industry Other resources mentioned: Speechpad transcription service (from USD$60 per audio hour) Trint transcription service (from USD$12 per audio hour) Yoast SEO Wordpress plugin Stories for work Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Open Universities Australia - Check out Open Universities’ online courses for business owners over at Open.edu.au. My DNA’s Dr Lior Rauchberger is succeeding at simplifying a complicated business | #379
MyDNA is potentially a very complicated business. It is after all, dealing with my (and yours) DNA! That;’s why founder Dr. Lior Rauchberger is working hard at simplifying a complicated business. Although officially a medical doctor, Dr. Lior Rauchberger is equally passionate about technology and innovation. In fact, if the truth be known, he’s a bit of a gadgets freak! After practising medicine for 9-years, he jumped ship and started Urban Intelligence, a business installing high tech into homes and offices. With that humming along beautifully, he then sought out his next venture which turned out to be MyDNA … a business that enables you to use your DNA to make the right health choices around things like diet and medication. I was introduced to Lior by past guest Radek Sali from Swisse Multivitamins, so I knew he’d be good. Truth is, Lior was exceptional. His passion for business, technology and marketing is addictive, as we cover plenty of ground including: Why he left the relative safety of the medical profession His love of the entrepreneur's life How he chooses his business ventures How he markets MyDNA - a service that most don’t know exists, and for those that do many think it’s hokus pokus! And so much more But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: I’ll show you how to create an insanely helpful email series And we go back into the vault, revisiting a chat I had with high performance expert Mark McKeon Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with MyDNA’s Dr Lior Rauchberger: Simplicity - Lior is making the complicated simple. And not just simple to understand, but simple to buy. For example, on the Diet Report page of the My DNA website, it simple reads “Are you on the best diet for your body? Our DNA test can reveal how your body will respond to what you eat and drink, and how you exercise.” Order Now. $99. Marketing challenge - Lior and his team aren’t kidding themselves about the marketing challenge that lies ahead, knowing they have quite some work to do to break through the cynicism and lack of understanding around the whole DNA thing. Distribution - Lior’s clearly identified the three groups My DNA needs to get onside - Health professionals, consumers and pharmacists - and has three distinct marketing strategies for them. Sometimes I see business owners stuck trying to influence just one group of influencers, when the reality is, most business have a number of groups. If that’s you, then maybe it’s time to cast your net wider. How to use social media marketing to build loyal fans with Channel Nine’s Peter Hitchener | #378
Peter Hitchener is one of Australia’s most loved and respected TV newsreaders. Think a chivalrous version of Ron Burgundy! He’s spent his entire career in the media, and has been the chief newsreader for Channel 9 since 1998. He received the Order of Australia medal earlier this year for his services to the broadcast media and the community, and is an active supporter of a number of charities. Now I know what you’re thinking. Pete’s not a business owner, Timbo ... and you always interview business owners. Well, you’re right, but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn from him. What fascinates me about Pete is that he’s 71 years old, and is not only using social media effectively, he’s using ALL social media effectively. How I found this out was via my 17 year old daughter, who was having a laugh at the dinner table a few weeks ago about the fact that Peter Hitchener is massive on Snapchat … and all her girlfriends love him! She showed me what he as doing, and I thought it was pure genius. So, if you’re keen to up your presence and engagement on social media, then listen in as Australia’s most popular TV newsreader takes us behind-the-scenes of his love affair with social media. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways shares a great way to create professional looking mock-ups of your marketing materials I share another low cost marketing idea that will help you manage unhappy customers And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past interview with LA concierge to the stars Steve Sims who shares a great referral marketing idea Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Channel Nine’s Peter Hitchener: No matter how successful you are, stay humble. Being Australia’s #1 newsreader, Peter is at the absolute top of his game; yet he remains humble, grateful and ridiculously accessible. I think it’s so ugly when I meet a successful person and they exude arrogance. Pete hasn’t put a huge amount of thought into how he strategically uses each social media channel. I loved how he responded to my question about which video streaming service (Periscope or Facebook Live) he would have used if he’d streamed this interview, and he responded “Both!” I think too many business owners over engineer their social media approach, and as a result do nothing. Do something, see what works for you and your audience, and take it from there! I’ll include a link in the shownotes to a blog post I wrote about how to use social media to take people behind-the-scenes of you business. If you look through Pete’s posts across all the channels he uses, he can often be seen promoting other people and their businesses. This can only help endear him to others - and get him a whole lot more shares from those people he chooses to profile. Serial entrepreneur Dan Norris built a million dollar recurring income in 2-years then sold it to GoDaddy | #377
In 2013 Dan Norris was two weeks away from unemployment following 8 straight years of business failure. The following week and with no funding, he launched an idea that within 2 years was a million dollar recurring income business, that was quickly snapped up by GoDaddy. He ‘s now on to his next venture and having a ball. In episode 377 of The Small Business Big Marketing Show, we find out how he’s done it. Dan endured 8 straight years of failure before selling his first successful business to GoDaddy for an undisclosed sum in 2016. Instead of finding the nearest hammock and enjoying his new found wealth, he’s now having a ball building Black Hops, a boutique brewery on the Gold Coast. One thing you’ll quickly pick up about Dan is Instead of messing around validating the plethora of ideas he has, he simply goes ahead and launches, making decisions based on real time information from real customers to build real businesses. How to start an eCommerce business and turn-over $1.8M in your first 10-months with Power Planter’s Brian Chapman | #376
How to start an eCommerce business and turn-over $1.8M in your first 10-months | How to use video to collaborate | Secrets to conducting a memorable podcast interview | A blogging strategy to make you look good | And plenty more on your favourite marketing podcast. Imagine finding a product you absolutely love and turning it into your own successful eCommerce business. Photographer (and part-time Gardener) Brian Chapman bought 20,000 seedlings for his rural property. He then realised the idea of digging 20,000 holes wasn’t that appealing. A quick Google search uncovered the Power Planter - a product only available out of America. Not for long … Brian’s now the local distributor, and has sold $1.8 million worth of this genius little invention in his first 10-months. Oh, and Brian’s no longer a Photographer! Brian Chapman, is the Australian distributor for the Power Planter, a simple tool that attaches to your drill and makes it ridiculously easy to dig holes in the ground. Up until 12-months ago, Brian was making a nice living as a professional photographer, but felt a little unsatisfied. Also a keen gardener living on a beautiful property just outside of Sydney, he’d created a rather large problem (which you’ll hear about shortly) for which Power Planter (only available out of North America at the time) turned out to be the ideal solution. The rest is history as Brian secured the licence to it, and has sold a whopping $1.8 million worth in his first 10-months of business! We cover so much marketing and business ground including: How to start an eCommerce business How Brian attained the local distribution rights The importance of listening to your instinct The key to starting a successful online business How Brian’s created a brand personality for Power Planter’s marketing And that’s just in the first 5-minutes! But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways shows us how to collaborate with our teams via video I’ll show you a blog post strategy that will make you look good … real good! I respond to some great follow-up questions from a listener who loved the recent episode I did on podcasting And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a chat I had with a fellow who has proven we can all do good by doing good Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Brian Chapman of Power Planter: I loved how he talked about the creative spirit … and that not always having the solution upfront, is not a reason to not move forward with an idea. Brian (along with many of the successful people I chat with on this show) was all about progress not perfection. “Make a mistake, then adjust and learn” seemed to be his mantra. Adapt your personality to who you’re selling to. I might have challenged Brian on this one, but it does make sense. Whilst I try to be me no matter what the situation, I certainly amp things up when I’m doing this show or presenting at a conference. I’ve included a link in the shownotes to a post detailing the 12 brand personalities Brian mentioned. Create a video that tackles the primary problem your business solves, then post it to your Home page, YouTube channel, maybe even include it in your email signature. I’ve also included a link in the shownotes to the website Brian mentioned where you can hire actors to appear in your marketing videos if you don't’ want to! How to effectively use promotional products to market your business with Arid Zone’s Clive McCorkell | #375
How to use promotional products effectively | Create templated marketing videos from your iPhone | Get a little celebrity lovin’ | A self-publishing success story | And plenty more on your favorite marketing podcast … Today’s successful business owner is Clive McCorkell of Arid Zone - a promotional products agency he co-founded 30-years ago. Clive knows a thing or two about how to use promotional products to market your business. The idea for this interview came about a few months ago when I was handed a calico bag full of promotional items at a Meet Up for what I consider to be quite a cool brand. I share what those items were in the interview, suffice to say that I was underwhelmed. A few weeks later I was the opening keynote speaker at the Australian Promotional Products Association’s annual conference, at which point I connected with Clive who agreed to come on the show. Promotional products is a marketing topic I’m yet to cover, but have plenty of questions, like how can businesses best use them, and what’s the future hold for them. Clives also been running a successful business for 3-decades (no mean feet) so I interrogated him about that as well! But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways shares a great way to make videos on your iPhone and upload directly to YouTube I share another low cost marketing idea that’ll get your business some celebrity lovin’ And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past interview with a guest who beleives all businesses can do good by doing good Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Clive McCorkell from Arid Zone: I love Arid Zone’s 5 touch point concept which starts out at the Quoting process and ends after the sale. Arid Zone speak. What a great idea. You may not even realise that your business has it’s own language - if it does, it might be time to formalise it so that all staff start integrating it into emails, sales letters, website pages and so on. “Brand in the hand” - I like that as a way to sum up the power of promotional products … because there’s nothing quite as powerful as having a prospect or customer interacting with your precious brand, right? In fact, in the past 12-months they’ve entertained and educated over 300,000 kids alone with their crazy brand of scientific mayhem! Now, Ben’s been a long time listener of this show, and has a huge respect for the power of marketing; hence my interest in getting him on. During this chat, he generously shares the top 3 marketing strategies that have impacted most on his business’s growth, the importance of being entertaining in order to get a message across and plenty more marketing gold. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways gives us the secret to finding anyone’s email address at the click of a button I’ll show you how to never run out of solid content ideas And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past episode in with a bloke who’s business idea came to him whilst he was hanging out his wife’s LBD! Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Ben Newsome of Fizzics Education: 100 Free Science Experiments. This is genius. Not only will it create massive goodwill amongst teachers who may one day book Ben and his team, but the amount of Google Juice it would create is off the charts. Creating an employee brand. Ben has worked hard at creating a look, feel and environment that attracts and retains great people. That alone is good for business …. Plus it means his HR costs are minimal. Ben’s sustained enthusiasm for marketing. I gotta say, I don’t see this enough. I see a lot of enthusiasm, just not sustained enthusiasm, where the business owner truly respects the power of marketing to the point that it’s constantly on their mind, where they’re trying to figure out how to improve on what’s already working and what to introduce into the mix next. 373 - Guest Masterchef Nick Holloway of Nu Nu on how he’s built an iconic Australian restaurant
Nick Holloway is the co-founder of Nu Nu, an idyllic restaurant in Palm Cove, Far North Queensland. He’s also been a guest celebrity chef on the TV hit series MasterChef. Not only is Nu Nu ideally located right on the sand, it’s also highly awarded with accolades including being ranked in Gourmet Traveller’s Top 100 Australian restaurants for six years running. I first met Nick a few weeks ago in the middle of a cane field between Cairns and Port Douglas - he was cooking for 600 plumbers and electricians as part of a conference for the Laser Group at which I was a keynote speaker. Nick himself is a passionate foodie, so much so that he was chosen to be a guest chef on the top-rating reality cooking show Masterchef for the past two years. What that did for his personal and business brands? Well, you’re about to find out. He’s also a stickler for creating an unforgettable customer experience, and a brand people love and talk about for years to come. Topics we cover in great depth during our chat. In the cutthroat world of hospitality, Nick’s list of achievements is impressive. But the marketing gold doesn’t stop there, in this episode you’ll also discover: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways shares a great way to secure all your social media usernames I share another low cost marketing idea that’ll help you get more love from your precious customers And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past interview with a business owner who had her product featured at this year’s Oscars! Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Nick Holloway of Nu Nu: Opportunities come from relationships, so spend time nurturing and building as many relationships as you can. If you want a place to start, then revisit that idea I shared recently about never eating along. I’ll drop a link in the shownotes. I find Nick’s amusement at the validation he got from being on Masterchef quite amusing! Getting a little media coverage can be so powerful. So look for opportunities - you could start by simply calling talk-back radio stations and contributing to topics of interest. Plus I’ve dropped a link to a past interview in the shownotes in which media ninja Sam Elam shared some great tips on getting free media. Run towards things, not away from them. 372 - How your business can absolutely do good by doing good with Peter Baines of Hands Across The Water.
Peter Baines is an international speaker on leadership, change management and corporate social responsibility. In a past life, Peter was a police officer, a forensic investigator heading up clean-up teams in the Bali Bombings and Thailand Tsunami. He’s also worked in Interpol’s counter-terrorism unit. He’s seen it all. But you might be wondering, what value does he have to bring to your small business? Well, Peter’s now the founder of the Thailand-based charity Hands Across The Water, and a massive advocate for helping businesses of all sizes do good by doing good. In fact, he’s written a book on the topic. During this chat, Peter shares some really solid strategies around how creating shared value is the key to powering business growth and innovation - and he backs them up with real life, small business case studies. Plus in episode 372 of Australia’s best marketing podcast: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways shares a great way to never make a grammar or spelling mistake again I share another low cost marketing idea that’ll show you how to use industry events to your advantage And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past interview that lifted the lid on how to master the art of selling Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Peter Baines of Hands Across The Water: Businesses of all sizes can do good by doing good. What many (including me) may have once considered a soft strategy for growth, is clearly not. I love the idea of creating shared experiences. There’s no doubt that once two people are emotionally connected, the business relationship takes on a whole new dynamic. If you want to see that in action, go back and take a listen to an episode I did on racing car sponsorship. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a return on investment from having a strong social conscience. 371 - Celebrity endorsement helped Radek Sali sell Swisse Multivitamins for $1.7 billion
Radek Sali knows a thing or two about celebrity endorsement - as the 40 year old, retired CEO Radek Sali of Swisse Multivitamins - a wellness business that sells supplements, skincare and superfoods, he’s used celebrity endorsement as a way to build one of Australia’s biggest brands. I sat next to Radek recently at a Hawthorn Football Club function, and I was pretty damn excited, as the Swisse brand is one that I’ve admired from a distance for many years. From it’s high quality packaging, to it’s brand consistency, to it’s relentless celebrity endorsement efforts (think Nicole Kidman, Ellen Degeneres, Ricky Ponting to name a few) and high frequency TV and print advertising schedule, Swisse would have to be one of the most well-known and respected brands in Australia. Radek started there in 2005 as the Operations Manager, he left there last year as a part owner having sold the business for $1.7 billion! He attributes celebrity endorsement strategy and an honest and meaningful business culture to the brand’s success Awards won by Radek and his team include BRW’s Most Successful Business of the Year (2012); GQ Businessman of the Year; and in 2016 Ernst & Young’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year (for Pharmaceuticals). Plus in episode 371 of Australia’s best marketing podcast: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways brings back the GIPH … not the GIMP, the GIPH! I share another low cost marketing idea that’ll increase your average dollar amount per sale And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show’s vault, revisiting a past interview with the creator of the world’s most viral marketing video Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Radek Sali of Swisse Multivitamins: I love the idea that as brand builders we're part of a Ferrari Formula One crew, and that whatever we’re working on we should be at full throttle, ready for it to all disintegrate once we get to the finish line. “The sky is just the beginning.” - talk about glass half full! Radek is one of the more optimistic people I’ve ever met. I love how he’s always looking for a way to make something work. I loved how he visited his retailers when he first stepped into the business all those years ago. If he hadn’t done that, he wouldn’t have uncovered the celebrity endorsement strategy that Centrim were using so well. I loved his modesty. I mean the guy is responsible or building one of Australia's most successful brands, he’s made $255M in doing so … but his ego was very in check. I loved the the 3 pillars of premium, proven and aspirational, through which all business decisions were evaluated. 370 - How one simple marketing idea doubled Melissa Westcott’s Big On Shoes business in just 12-months
Melissa Westcott founded Big On Shoes, Australia’s home to plus-sized fashion shoes. What’s of particular interest is she applied one simple marketing idea that doubled her business in the past 12-months. It’s an idea that you could implement in a heartbeat. In fact, if you’re not doing it already, you’re very naughty! I was introduced to Melissa from past guest and digital nomad, Mark Phillips from Business in Bare Feet. Hitting me up on Facebook Messenger (isn’t that happening more often?!) he said: Hey Timbo. Let me introduce you to Melissa Westcott from BigOnShoes. At a function today she was telling me how she loves your show. Yet she in her own right is an amazing startup. From her kitchen table in Moranbah in central Queensland, she set up an online shoe store for 'ladies' with large feet. Today she's one of the world's largest suppliers of womens’ shoes to the global transvestite & sex-change market! Go figure. She’s doubled her business lately from one of your podcasts! Let me know if you’d like to interview her & I'll set up an intro. Damn right I’d like an interview! And that’s what you’re about to listen to … plus, in episode 370 of Australia’s best marketing podcast I’ll: Show you how to get more online love for your business Share some big news about upcoming guests Divulge a marketing problem that I can’t solve Go back into the vault, revisiting a rather inspiring past episode Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Melissa Westcott of Big On Shoes: Get back to your purpose. This one’s hard to argue given it doubled Melissa’s business over the past 12-months. So … if you find yourself trying to be everything to everyone, then maybe it’s time to stop, refocus and figure out why you started your business in the first place, what was that big issue your clients have that you solve so well. Get clear on your customer's’ objections. Then, one by one, create marketing and improvements to your overall offering that address them head on. If your customers have no objections, then all they can really do is well ... buy from you! Track your numbers. Now I’ll be the first to admit that this one’s not my strong suit. However, it clearly works - I’ve spoken to way too many successful business owners who do this. So, if numbers aren’t your thing, then find someone who loves them (your accountant, a coach, a staff member) and get them to set up a dashboard for you that you can track on at least a weekly basis. That dashboard may include sales, email open rates, database sign ups, new clients, Google rankings … whatever numbers mean the most to you. 369 – Dale Beaumont’s 7 (ridiculously simple) steps to creating highly profitable business partnerships
Does the idea of getting your beautiful business in front of hundreds, if not thousands more of your ideal customers excite you. No need to answer that … of course it does! Then join Business Blueprint’s Dale Beaumont and I as we detail the 7 steps to creating highly effective partnerships. Here’s what else we cover in episode 369 of Australia’s #1 marketing podcast: A productivity tool to make your life a whole lot easier I share another low cost marketing idea that ensures you have a ridiculously consistent brand And we go back into the vault, revisiting a past inspiring episode As per usual, there’s marketing G.O.L.D. dripping from the ceiling over at Small Business Big Marketing’s HQ … So let’s get stuck ... right in. A little bit about today’s successful business owner Dale Beaumont: Dale has been helping business owners grow for over a decade with his Blueprint Membership program. He’s also the brains behind the 52 Ways live events. I attended the Melbourne one, and boy oh boy, it was incredible. What I love about Dale is his unwavering commitment to helping business owners create a business and lifestyle they love. Plus he practices what he preaches – every business building idea he shares, he’s tested in his own business. Here’s what caught my attention from chatting with Dale Beaumont of Business Blueprint: Budsies! I love the idea of Budsies! Dale showed me a photo of the one he’d been sent – it looked just like him! Sending someone one of these is a great way to get their attention. What’d Dale call this tactic? A shock and awe package! Feel free to send me one – Po Box 989, Mt Eliza 3930 :0) Get clear on what you have to give before you put your hand out for the ask. This is pretty much true of anything in life, really? Gary Vaynerchuk also talks at length about this in his book on social media called Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook. The power of partnerships. In my experience, this is a very under-utilised marketing strategy, yet one that has the potential for such a big impact on your business’s growth. So, if you liked what Dale had to share, then please … implement it.
