S2 Ep 29Tom Williams - Episode 29 - The return of parkrun

Today I'm joined by the one and only Tom Williams, parkrun COO and one host of the podcast Marathon Talk. Following parkrun's recent statement I knew I wanted to speak with a guest about the hot topic and planned return. I saw that Tom was actively posting about parkrun on Twitter one day and thought I'd tweet and ask if he'd like to come onto the podcast. My Mum has always taught me, if you don't ask, you don't get and the worst someone can say is no. Lucky for you and I, Tom said yes! And here we are. After recording a 2 hour Facebook Live Tom jumped straight onto Zoom with me to answer all of your questions. He initially promised me half hour and I was worried about how I could fit everything into that time. But as you can tell by the length of the podcast, we were chatting for a lot longer than that and this was definitely one of the most interesting and engaging conversations. I can't thank Tom enough for taking the time to record this for us. Despite recent negativity in the media about the current affairs in the UK, we tried to keep the chat positive and lighthearted, as well as wanting to answer some concerns and changes we may see as park runners in the future. The main message that came from the chat at the end, is very powerful and I hope you can all take on board Tom's suggestions following on from this.

S1 Ep 24Lynn & Freya - Episode 24 - The Best Friends Talk All Things Running!

Oh my goodness.. what an absolute delight to be able to chat to my bestest friends about running!! I've been friends with Lynn and Frey since Year 7 and 8 of school, so we're talking a good 19 or 20 years now. Lynn has been running for around 4 years now and in this time we've ran the Vitality 10,000 together and I also helped her with a plan leading up to a half marathon earlier this year. Since lockdown came around in March, Lynn has used her free time to put all her energy into running and it's been so lovely to watch her progress and her confidence in her own ability. Freya has recently completed the couch to 5km app and although Freya has walked a marathon, she would admit she didn't think she'd be someone to take on running. A few weeks ago, Lynn and I got to run with Freya on her first 5km which was a really special moment in our friendship. I was so excited to invite these two onto the podcast to talk about their journeys but also share some special memories that running has given us throughout our journeys. I hope you enjoy this episode as we draw close to the end of series 1. I have some great ideas up my sleeve for series 2 so stay tuned! We will be taking a short break to plan out the next set of guests but promise you it won't be long. Thanks for listening and as always, hope you enjoy this chat!

S1 Ep 23MK Marathon Reimagined - Episode 23 - The 'New Normal' of Mass Running Events -

With September drawing closer and time running out, Andy had to make the tough decision to go with his Plan B idea and has come up with the new concept; MK Marathon Reimagined. It was great chat to Andy about how the vision came about as no other race organiser has been yet to provide an option to their runners of this level. It was interesting to understand what the original Plan A race would have looked like in September with social distancing and was clear it wouldn't be runners are used. It sounds as Andy and the MK team have put in some really hard work to come up with the best alternative solution. https://mkmarathon.com/how-it-works/

S1 Ep 22Mark, James, Naomi & Duncan - Episode 22 - Corona Catch Up

I thought it would be an interesting idea to invite some previous guests back onto the podcast and catch up with what they've been up to recently. We caught up with Mark from Ep 5, James from Ep 1, Naomi from Ep 2 and Duncan from Ep 3. I asked them what they've been up to since March, how the current times may have affected their running, what's been keeping them motivated and what they're looking forward to next! Some great catch ups and really interesting to hear what they've all been doing.

S1 Ep 20Rudi Chaplin - Episode 20 - Sports Rehabilitator at The Treatment Lab

Rudi, owner of the Treatment Lab clinic joined me to share his own running journey and how the clinic has been impacted by current events. I've been treated by Rudi for over 3 years so trust in everything he does and says! As a fellow runner, Rudi sees and treat a lot of runners from all over Milton Keynes and as a runner himself can relate to our injuries and setbacks. Rudi is also part of the dream team that puts together the Sponsored Athlete programme where we sponsor 2 athletes every year on their journey to a spring marathon. The programme is in its 3rd year and this years athletes Mark and Anastasia have previously featured on this episode. We go on to discuss what future appointments look like in the sports treatment world and what the new 'normal' will look like.

S1 Ep 19Adam 'Tango' Holland - Episode 19 - 447 Marathons/Ultras and Counting!

Adam has 447 marathons and ultras to his name and has won more marathons/ultra marathons than anyone else in the UK. He was only 23 years old when he had reached 100 marathons putting him in the Guinness World Records for being the youngest person in Europe to achieve this. He is also the fastest person to run 10 marathons in 10 days, with an average time of 2 hours 45 minutes. Last year he completed the famous John O'Groats to Lands End Challenge where he ran over 800 miles running from the top to the bottom of the UK. This year Adam was due to run 20 marathons in 20 days but due to the current climate this has not been possible. Although Adams achievements are very impressive, he was very modest during our chat. We discussed some of his many achievements but also delved a bit deeper into how his running has changed in recent times.

S1 Ep 17Andy Hully - Episode 17 - Milton Keynes Marathon Race Director

Welcome to Episode 17 and one I'm sure a few of you will be very interested in! In this episode I sat down with Andy Hully the race director of the Milton Keynes marathon. Milton Keynes Marathon first started in 2012 to signify the Olympic year. It's now turned into a huge event over the last few years with the running community actively getting involved by either running the event, volunteering or spectating. Taking place every May Bank Holiday it's one of the biggest races on our local calendar. The Milton Keynes Marathon not only has the main event, but a half marathon, superhero fun run - a 1 mile race for the family, a new 10km race and the famous 5km rocket the day before with a great course for a PB! The MK marathon is iconic due to the fact that you get to finish in the football stadium cheered on by all of your friends and family. Andy very kindly spoke to me about how the events unfolded in March leaving him with no option to postpone the event until September. with huge uncertainty around Autumn events and a very crowded race calendar I asked Andy to share his thoughts on what he sees mass races looking like in the future. I hope you enjoy this event and want to thank Andy once again for coming onto the podcast.

S1 Ep 16Andy Raynor - Episode 16 - The FOD Runner

Welcome to Episode 16, where I sat down with Andy Raynor also know as the FOD Runner or Forest of Dean Runner. I met Andy through a mutual friend and over the last few years have had the pleasure of meeting him at various running events and am now able to call him a friend. Andy is a family man, running his own businesses but a very keen and talented runner. He seems to balance everything so well but also not the sacrifice of something else. If you know Andy, then you'll know he's a man who thoroughly enjoys the trails, loves a trainer review and has his own unique style of training. Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Andy to chat about his approach to training, how he tackles the long run as he runs 90% of the time between 18-20 miles and his growing YouTube channel. Since we recorded this he's hit over 5,000 subscribers which is a huge achievement and a lot more than when we first met. We talk through how relaxing and ignoring the watch has allowed him to achieve a sub 3 hour marathon after a few previous marathon disasters. He's also run a 36 minute 10km and 77 minute half marathon recently which is incredible as he's only been running for 5 years!
