Roy Green Show Podcast, August, 28: Yes to Private Healthcare, Customer Service Nightmare, CAF Hero No Victoria Cross, Lisa LaFlamme Firing
Today’s podcast: Part 2 of our weekend review of healthcare in Canada and possible increase of private healthcare options. Yesterday Dr. Alika Lafontaine, new president of the Canadian Medical Association. Today the founder of Canada's likely most famous private surgical clinic. Guest: Dr. Brian Day. Founder of the Cambie Surgery Centre, Vancouver. A customer dissatisfaction story of a car rental gone wrong very badly wrong. Vancouver woman rents a Yukon Denali in Toronto from Avis and developments following the return of the vehicle are off the scale. Instead of perhaps 200 km of driving in 68 hours guest was billed $8,079.76 for a claimed 36,482km driven. To accomplish this the Yukon Denali would have had to keep a speed of 536.5 kilometers per hour. Top speed for the Denali? 176kmh. When our guest complained the situation deteriorated further. VISA was no real help either. Guest: Giovanna Boniface. Vancouver woman who rented the Denali. General Lavoie witnessed what Private Larochelle accomplished. General Lavoie called in artillery support and alerted the gunners that mere meters separated his Canadian soldiers from the insurgents he wanted hit. No CAF soldier has received a Victoria Cross since WWII. We're told Australians and Americans awarded their highest military honours to soldiers who fought in Afghanistan and these soldiers have personally reached out to Private Jess Larochelle, who has still not entirely recovered from the wounds he received in that battle. Guest: Lt. General Omer Lavoie, CAF Command Officer in the battle on October 14, 2006. Nationally prominent Canadians sign a two page letter carried in the Globe and Mail challenging Bell for the removal of Lisa Laflamme as CTV national news anchor, charging sexism and ageism. What is an employment lawyer's advice to Bell Media today? - And the issue of 'quiet quitting.' Employment lawyer warns of the dangers and possible pitfalls. Guest: Howard Levitt. Employment lawyer. Author: The Law of Dismissal in Canada. --------------------------------------------- Host/Content Producer – Roy Green Technical/Podcast Producer – Tom McKay Podcast Co-Producer – Matt Taylor If you enjoyed the podcast, tell a friend! Aug 28: Lt. Gen. Omer Lavoie, Victoria Cross for CAF Private Jess Larochelle
bonusA developing story we have been sharing with listeners. The Canadian Victoria Cross for a Canadian Armed Forces member? Canadian Army Private Jess Larochelle accomplished in Afghanistan on October 14, 2006, what we usually only see in Hollywood movies with the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Seriously wounded, with two of his fellow troopers dead, he battled insurgents solo protecting the rest of his squad. When Private Larochelle's name for the Canadian Victoria Cross was raised in a parliamentary motion Liberal MPs voted the nomination down. The DND as well decided "no.". Meanwhile Canada's former Chief of Defence Staff, General Rick Hillier appeared on our program supporting the CVC for Private Larochelle. Our guest as well believes Private Larochelle has earned the CVC. Guest: Lt. General Omer Lavoie, CAF Command Officer in the battle on October 14, 2006. General Lavoie witnessed what Private Larochelle accomplished. General Lavoie called in artillery support and alerted the gunners that mere meters separated his Canadian soldiers from the insurgents he wanted hit. Aug 28: Prof Thierry Bros, Upcoming Daily Blackouts in Europe
bonusTrudeau and Scholz. They weren't going to talk Canadian LNG for Germany and appeared to talk about little else except signing non-binding agreement to export hydrogen power from Newfoundland beginning in 2025 (no infrastructure has even begun to be built. Scholz though finally said Germany wants Canadian LNG. -- Meanwhile in Europe the situation continues to deteriorate and the fear of a winter minus Russian LNG rises. The Hague has requested relief from sanctions against Russia. The city needs Russian natural gas. Others will follow says my guest. -- Experts in the area of energy security are bluntly saying the Germans and their over-enthusiasm for renewables are the architects of their own disaster. - A French member of parliament this week tweeted almost the identical accusation and told the Germans to fire up their nuclear plants and take care of their people. And there's a ship from Argentina on the way to Germany filled with LNG. Guest: Professor Thierry Bros. Professor at Sciences Po, Paris. Leading expert on markets, geopolitics of oil and gas and energy security. In charge of security of supply at the French Energy Ministry Regular contributor to Natural Gas World website. Aug 28: Marc Rousseau, LTC Facility Demanding Payment for Time Father Never Spent There
bonusOntario will require seniors currently in hospitals but deemed well enough to live in LTC facilities to accept an offered space in such a facility even if it is a long distance from the senior's home and family. More details to come. Senior who refuse will be charged significant daily fee for hospital stay, as though they were uninsured patients. Guest: Marc (has been updating us on the situation facing his 97 year old father in ON). Marc's father was recently set to move from a private LTC facility to a hospice. His father though died the next day. Marc then received an invoice from the private LTC facility demanding payment for time his father never spent at the facility (he's dead, remember). The facility's policy is they must receive 30 days notice of moving out and that clients must pay a month in advance. Marc wanted a refund for 17 days of the month his dad didn't spend in the facility and the private facility's response was you didn't provide us the 30 days notice of moving out, so you owe us that extra money. So how did this situation eventually play out? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today’s podcast: Yesterday in Vancouver a jury returned 5 guilty verdicts against Aydin Coban. Extortion, harassment, communication with a young person to commit a sexual offence and possession and distribution of child pornography. The young person was Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd who took her own life in 2012. Story has gone viral. Montreal mom living with multiple sclerosis whose two young sons opened a lemonade stand on their front lawn last weekend to raise money for the MS Society. All was well until a neighbour complained about noise and police arrived. The mom, Ayana Massa told me police were extremely aggressive. Since the incident was reported people have driven 3 hours from Quebec City to Montreal just to meet her and her sons. Sent me a photo of an acknowledgement of a $2,000 donation to the MS Society of Canada from her son. That money was raised in 3 days with the lemonade stand. Margaret Bristow of Ottawa is a chronic pain patient who has been living with increasing agony and reduced pain medication and/or help reducing her debilitating pain, although other approaches to dealing with her pain were attempted. Ms. Bristow petitioned the government for Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) which was repeatedly refused. Now a medically assisted death has been approved and next Wednesday, August 10, Margaret Bristow will die with the help of a doctor in Brampton, ON.
