This week in The Labia Lounge I chatted with Dr Nathan Riley, who supports midwives as a collaborative physician and upholds the traditional practice of midwifery as his main focus after becoming disillusioned with the conventional maternity care model in the medical industrial complex.Nathan has experience in the mainstream medical system as an OB-GYN as well as in the home birth world, boasting an extremely low C-section rate of under 5%, which is one of the best in the US. This week on The Labia Lounge I cover a very important topic that feels ever present in the work that I do with woman. Labiaplasty. As someone who sees first hand the damage this surgery can do and the consequences many people suffer as a result, I feel very strongly about this procedure and about the reasons behind why so many vulva-owners feel the need to change their bodies in this way. Labiaplasty is the fastest growing cosmetic surgery in the WORLD and I don't believe this is by chance. We're also not educated or informed about so many of the risks and the realities of this surgery, including how doctors are trained (or rather NOT trained) to do it and the common risks involved.So this episode is a resource for those who would like to educate themselves on this topic, as well as a discussion around several other related topics with my guest Jessica Pin.Jessica has been at the centre of quite the maelstrom of internet hysteria lately with something that she’s said online and is copping some serious hate on socials right now. I won't comment too much on this whole thang here but I do include a disclaimer at the start of this episode to explain my stance, and Jessica does actually talk about this incident in the episode too - so you'll just have to listen to it to get the dish!I want to acknowledge that while I categorically disagree with her stance on including trans vulvas in a vulva diversity art project and I don’t back the way she’s gone about expressing her opinions on these sort of matters, I do believe that she has a very earnest and sincere mission that she has dedicated her life to as she pursues anatomically correct diagrams and accurate female pleasure anatomy information in medical textbooks, medical training standards and curricula. This week’s episode is slightly different to the usual topics we cover here in The Labia Lounge, but just as important to holistic health and wellbeing. I got a friend Carla Leske in to chat about eczema and topical steroid withdrawal (Otherwise known as TSW) because it’s something that she’s been battling with for over 2 years now, and something very relevant to me currently given my crazy eczema journey.Everyone needs to know about this because it's likely that you or someone close to you, including your children perhaps, will experience eczema or some sort of skin condition at some point and if you're not equipped with this information then you could be walking into a shitstorm, as you'll learn from this episode!We discussed the horrifying reality of what can happen if you use topical steroid creams for skin conditions like eczema for too long, how a dependence/addiction develops and the effect this has on your adrenals and nervous system, the symptoms of TSW and Carla's journey with it, the response from the western medical system to this condition and the resources and advice out there for how to avoid or overcome it. This week in The Labia Lounge I had the pleasure of talking to a total #dreamteam of a couple, Charley and Shelley Wininger, about their experiences with MDMA.(Not the usual sort of topic for this podcast but it's definitely in line with my MO of smashing stigma and taboo, educating on some lesser known topics where accurate and empowering information has been suppressed, and providing the latest in personal development and self growth! So when you look at it like that, it's actually very on brand for me!)Charley - a psychotherapist and mental health counselor - and Shelley - a retired critical care nurse - are in their 70s and have been using MDMA and other psychedelics, as well as cannabis, for the past 25 years to enhance their lives, relationships and self growth.The two of them are long-term members of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, which funds research into the use of MDMA for treating PTSD, social anxiety and other ailments, and they've been instrumental in building the local MAPS community in New York.I got stuck into some great conversations with them about how they use MDMA safely and responsibly themselves several times a year, even well into their seventies! We chat about how it's transformed their lives, enhanced their relationship and brought them closer to one another and themselves with every use. Shelley shares about how she's been able to increase her libido and become multi-orgasmic post menopause, and what a hugely positive influence being part of a community of psychonauts has had on their world.
