This week in The Labia Lounge I had the pleasure of chatting with the brilliant Dr. Tina Schermer Sellers, a licensed sex and gender feminist psychotherapist, best-selling author, researcher, emeriti professor, and media personality whose expertise spans sex therapy, spiritual intimacy, parenting, medicine, and social justice. Tina shares invaluable insights on raising shame-free, confident children and how to be your child’s best relationship resource, sex educator, and ally.

Throughout this episode, we dive into the importance of having frequent, short conversations about sexual health, consent, body autonomy, and online safety with your children. Tina emphasizes the need to be a safe person for your child to confide in, creating an environment where open dialogue is encouraged, despite the fact that you may not have had this same environment provided for you as a child. We chat about how to approach this, even if you still have your own layers of shame and don't feel particularly knowledgeable or qualified, and we learn about the different stages of development you can expect your children to go through and what's "normal" and appropriate at what stage.

We'll also delve into the impact of sexual shame on our society, examining its roots in conservative religious communities and the role of capitalism and materialism.
