This week in The Lounge I get a couple of cool cats on to chat about asexuality and aromanticism and the annoying and incorrect assumptions that are commonly made by those of us who don't understand this topic.
I chat with Niamh (who's asexual and aromantic) and mainstay guest and supporter of the poddy, Hannah, about this complex and oft-misunderstood orientation.
We cover some common misconceptions and assumptions people make that get sand in Niamh's clam. For example the ol' "Oh you're asexual? What a waste...what a pity", and "oh you're asexual? It's a phase, you'll change your mind about me"... Or "you just haven't met the right person". We chat about how people commonly feel sorry for people who are asexual as though they're missing out on some essential and incomparable part of the human experience. And we cover the reactions people have if someone who claims to be asexual puts effort into their appearance, dresses up in an 'attractive' way or engages in their sensual expression.
We talk about intimacy, baths with friends, platonic connection and people feeling entitled to our bodies.
This is an important conversation and will help deepen your understanding of this stuff hugely so I really recommend giving it a listen!
