Habit 20 | Hitting the RESET button

If you've ever felt frazzled, found yourself scrolling holiday destinations on instagram or just felt like you've taken too much, your first thought might be to spend a fortnight on a white, sandy beach, down tools for a week or just stay in bed for a few days. When none are an option, is there a way to reset and recharge? In this new habit I'm going to see if something as simple as being rigid about when you wake up and when you go to bed can lift the sense of overwhelm, create a feeling of being a bit more in control and help you navigate those times when you just feel like the only thing that'd help is a relaxing holiday. Let's see if there can be a rest in resetting...Links from the show:Lewis Howes and The School of Greatness podcast on How to Manage Anxiety, Burnout and Overwhelm. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram. For the entire #26habits back catalogue visit The Pool.Hey! Habit 19 | Guilty purchase, better you?

I hope I’m not alone in being the kind of person who buys things in the hope their purchase will be enough to make me fitter, brighter or more organised. I have a tendency to buy sports equipment for at-home gym sessions that then go on to gather dust in the corner, but I’ve also bought expensive notebooks, elaborate filing systems or apps that promise a more organise life that go un-used.For this habit I’m going to put my last batch of sports kit to good use by creating an 8-minute tabata. Eight minutes is nothing, when you really think about it, and with the kit right there, you know, at the end of the sofa, it should be easy to incorporate into my day. Only one way to find out…Disclaimer: please consult your doctor or GP before beginning any new exercise Do you buy things with the hope they’ll help you be better at something? Habit 18 | No Makeup

Here's another habit that was requested in the Facebook group for the show - not wearing makeup for a fortnight. I have to be honest, this feels weird, not just because I wear makeup every day, but because makeup and beauty are what I do for a living in my role as a beauty journalist. My instagram feed is full of the makeup I'm using, the products I think are worth spending your hard-earned money on and all the lovely new products that are about to launch. To take a step back feels like missing out a crucial part of my day and also like bypassing a vital part of my daily self-care. Habit 17 | Quitting sugar

There's a slew of evidence out there to show that not only is sugar bad for us, but it's also addictive. The fact it tastes the delicious and serves as the flavour cornerstone of most of the food we eat makes it hard to avoid, even with the best of intentions, but when Ian Marber was on this podcast he said that if you want to stop eating sugar, it's really simple - you stop eating sugar. With that in mind, I'm going to look away from all the scary statistics out there there essentially show how sugar is rotting my mind, body and spirit from the inside-out and just concentrate on not putting it in my mouth. Added sugar can take a hike, these next two weeks are going to be all about steering clear of all refined sugars and carbohydrates. The Daily Recommended Allowance (RDA) for sugar in the UK is 30g, which is roughly equivalent to seven sugar cubes.Hey! Ep 149Habit 16 | Is a two week spending freeze doable?

This habit is inspired by comments in the Facebook Group for the show and it's all about how feasible it is to do a spending freeze. Unless it's essential - food, water, rent etc - then the money stays in the account or in the pocket.According to one report all these cashless transactions we're used to means we're spending way more than we actually intend to, sometimes up to three times more, and those are expenses that can really build up. So what I'm going to do for two weeks is keep my purse closed and see what I realise I do need to spend money on and what I absolutely don't. It also means I'll have to prepare lunches, coffees and the like because grabbing one when I'm out and about is completely off-limits. Yikes, I'm nervous...To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram. For the entire #26habits back catalogue visit The Pool.Hey! Ep 133Habit 12 | What are the mental health benefits of journaling?

My 12th habit in #26habits is going to be journaling. Why? Because there is endless research to show that the mental and physical benefits are nothing but positive. Improved cognitive function, stronger immune system, a general sense of calm - it's all at the end of your pen. But something as easy as writing is simple to overlook in the busy, tech-heavy world we live in, so what steps do I, and maybe you, need to take to make journaling a part of our every day.In this episode I examine the benefits, the ways to make it work for me and how to get the most out of each written entry...Hey! Ep 129Habit 11 | Have I forgotten how to read?

Here's a habit I have fallen out of; reading. Sure, I read a tonne of articles on my phone that I've clicked through to from social media, but it's been a long time since I've read a book. It's not because I don't want to. I've started loads, but never finish them. It's time to rediscover the art of reading and for someone like me, who has a hive mind and is easily distracted, it's something that I need to put a bit of effort into. Do I need to employ the skills from my previous habits - meditation and minimising my tech use - to make this work? Let's find out...Hey! Ep 125Habit 10 | Will decluttering my wardrobe make me happier?

This #26habits, or a version of it, was something I didn’t feel brave, ready or inclined to do. I knew I wanted to get rid of everything in my wardrobe and start again, but the prospect of doing so was very easy to dismiss as ‘ridiculous’ and move away from quickly. In the last year I’ve had a series of spontaneous clear outs, but have never had the guts to tackle my closet - until now... I read Tessa Coates featureWhy Having Just 33 Items of Clothing Could Mean You Have More to WearonThe Pool and realised she’d given me the perfect stepping stone to my ultimate goal. The premise is to whittle down your wardrobe to just 33 items - the ones that don’t make the cut are kept out of site, donated or sold - and wear only these for three months. Even I didn’t realise why I was shying away from a wardrobe cleanse, until I followed the first step in the 333 Challenge and put every single item of clothing I own on my bed…Mentioned in the show:Project 333 by Courtney Carver. https://bemorewithless.com/project-333/Be More with Less https://www.amazon.co.uk/Simple-Ways-Be-More-Less-ebook/dp/B0056U9I52Robin James’ video Always Look Good | Finding Your Style in 2018 has some absolutely vital points for creating and maintaining a wardrobe that suits you. Marie Kondo: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying: A Simple, effective way to banish clutter forever. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Life-Changing-Magic-Tidying-effective-clutter/dp/0091955106Suggestions for clothing donations:UK https://www.salvationarmy.org.uk/clothing-bankUSA http://www.planetaid.org/get-involved/donate-clothesAustralia https://www.redcross.org.au/support-us/red-cross-shops/donate-clothing-and-goodsEurope https://www.refugeesupport.eu/help-us-by-donating-items/*Disclaimer: landfill is full of unwanted clothes so if you decide to do this, or a version of it, please donate, sell or repurpose your old clothes.Hey! Ep 121Habit 9 | How can I live a more environmentally friendly life?

Climate change is real. I'm not being flippant, but with some people questioning whether global warming is actually something we need to worry about it's time to look at some hard facts. Millions of tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean each year, plastic bags take upwards of 1000 years to degrade and knowing what can and can't be recycled isn't an easy as it maybe should be.In this ninth #26habits I'm looking at the small, sustainable changes I can make to the products and services I consume and the way I recycle that will stop me contributing to the problem. Just a small about of internet research and I found that things I thought could be recycled can't and vice versa. It's time to educate myself as much as it's time to make changes.Tune into the show to find out what steps I'll be taking over these next two weeks to break the habit of unwillingly contributing to climate change. To join the closed Facebook group please click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To email me directly please use [email protected] find the #26habits back catalogue and further reading on sustainability, climate change and much more, visit The Pool.Hey!
