Ep 117Habit 8 | What is a ketogenic diet and how do I do it?
After the success of habit number 6 and intermittent fasting, I'm going to embark on another eating pattern that promises similar health benefits. While weight loss may be one side effect of the ketogenic diet, there's also a lot of evidence to suggest other physical and mental benefits such as improved clarity and increased physical endurance.I'm a card-carrying yo-yoer, I succeed at restricted calorie intake and intense exercise that eventually becomes unsustainable and am keen to find a way of eating that gives me long-term health benefits and helps me look the way I feel happy with without being an all-or-nothing approach. Here's the link to the ketone strips I'll be using during this #26habits >> Just Fitter Ketone Test Strips. If you want to join the conversation head over to the Facebook Group here >> The Emma Guns Show on Facebook. To view the #26habits back catalogue visit The Pool.Hey! Ep 115Habit 7 | Can I break my smartphone addiction. UPDATE.
Have I successfully limited my phone use? In this update episode I update you as to whether setting rules around how and when I use my phone has reduced the amount of time I spend on my phone every day. I was clocking up six hours or more a day and in this show I tell you whether I've managed to bring that down to something that's less horrifying that a quarter of the entire day...To get in touch with the show email me on [email protected], follow me on instagram and twitter where I'm @emmaguns or join the Facebook group for the podcast here >> Facebook Forum.Hey! Ep 114Habit 7 | Can I break my smart phone addiction?
Phones are wonderful, aren't they? What used to be about making calls is now much more about having the internet, and therefore the entire world, within arms reach. I love my phone, but possibly a little too much. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm addicted and with research and statistics showing that this sort of addiction can affect your physical and mental health, it's time to put some limits in place so I don't fall foul of the luxury of having everything at my fingertips. It was Sali Hughes feature on The Pool - Smartphone Addiction made me anxious, restless and muddled - that left me with no doubt I had an issue with how much I was using my phone, whether that was to actually do something or just to while away the time. So, for my seventh #26habits I'm going to be putting limits on when I use my phone, will be changing a little-known setting to make it much less desirable, turning off a very specific function (clue: it's the one apps and sites always ask you turn on) and putting some physical distance between me and my device. If you want to email me simply drop me a line to [email protected], to follow me on social media I'm @emmaguns and to join the Facebook forum for the podcast simply click this link >> The Emma Guns Show Forum.Hey! In a slightly different format from usual I'm handing over the show to my dear friend Jules von Hep. Jules was a guest on the show in 2017 and his outlook was a big hit with listeners, in the main because Jules' default setting is 'happy'. But being this happy is something Jules has worked hard at and in this talk he reveals his journey to contentment and how you can join him.Jules (@julesvonhep) has recently launched his own tanning range Isle of Paradise which you can follow on instagram at @theisleofparadise and has not one, but two podcasts with Sarah Powell (@thissarahpowell) - Jules and Sarah The Podcast and Wobble. If you want to get in touch with me, you can email me at [email protected] or if you want to join the closed Facebook forum click here >> The Emma Guns Show - The Forum or follow me on social where I'm @emmaguns.Hey! That's what I reveal in this update episode of the podcast with insight on hunger pangs, how it has affected my gym sessions, the quality of my sleep and more.To join in the conversation over in the Facebook Forum click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum or if you want to send me an email please send it to [email protected]'t forget I've teamed up with The Pool where you can find all episodes of #26habits and right back to the beginning of 2018. Habit 6 | What are the benefits of intermittent fasting?
You know the expression 'like a kid in a candy store'? Is that how many of us are eating these days? Over-stimulated, over-stretched and leaning on food not only for sustenance, but relief and comfort wherever and whenever we want...As a card-carrying emotional eater I've found that the only times in my life I've ever had any control over my weight is when I'm eating within a strict structure and that 'structure' usually means a rigid regime of counting points, macros, weighing my food, measuring every ingredient to the micro mg, cutting out entire food groups, blending my meals into some sort of 'shake' that could be better described as sludge and more - all of which is unsustainable in the long-term. I've been reading more and more about intermittent fasting (IF) and the benefits are seemingly endless and require little more effort than setting yourself an 'eating window' and sticking to it. Traditional eating habits include a breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks inbetween and you could time these meals at 8am, 1pm and 8pm or thereabouts. With IF the eating window is 12pm to 8pm.Tune in to find out how I'm going to ease my way into IF from otherwise random eating habits and what the real benefits might be to making this slight change to my eating patterns. We discuss the reality of people in Britain today making a choice between food and hygiene, how Sali's trip to a homeless shelter in Cardiff while recording a documentary for the BBC highlighted the issue of hygiene poverty, what homelessness really means in the UK today and much more, including how you can get involved with Beauty Banks...All of the links of where to send donations, how you can get involved and to find the Beauty Banks wish list are in Sali's piece for The Pool here >> People living in poverty need toiletries and beauty products. Habit 5 | Will yoga before bed improve my health?
It's time to start habit number 5, but not before I round off the fourth #26habits of quitting alcohol for two weeks. Here Hannah Varrall from The Pool and I conclude our findings from a fortnight of saying 'no' at the bar and whether it'll change our relationship with social drinking moving forward. As for the next habit - it's time to make one. With a 67/33 split on the twitter poll you wanted me to do yoga before bed for two weeks, but to what end?In this episode I outline the reasons why yoga at bedtime is a good habit to get into, why it doesn't mean setting aside a whole hour, why certain poses can be helpful before you drift off to sleep and what benefits one may feel from doing this regularly. These are the videos I'll be choosing from during the two weeks, which gives a variety of choice.Yoga with Adriene > Yoga for Bedtime 20 minutes.Yoga with Adriene > 7 Minute Bedtime Yoga.Yoga with Adriene > Bedtime Yoga Sequence. 37 minutes. To get in touch with the show email me at [email protected] or slide into the DMs on instagram and twitter where I'm @emmaguns, to join the Closed Facebook Group, simply click here > FORUM. Habit 4 | Is sobriety the way forward?
#26habits is teaming up with The Pool (@thepooluk) and in this fourth habit I'm going to be exploring the benefits of being tee-total with Junior AV Producer Hannah Varrall (@hannahvarr).Neither of us would say we have a problem with alcohol, we both fall into the camp of being pretty indifferent to it until it's in front of us in social situations, but is it doing us more harm that we realise? Is casual drinking, when alcohol is a known depressant, a problem in a time when more and more people are citing struggles with stress and anxiety? We're almost conditioned to believe that a drink will 'take the edge' off a hard day, but what lies beyond that moment? We're going to find out...Hannah and I are going to be each other's buddy while we navigate this new world of saying 'no' to a drink at the bar or declaring 'not for me' when we're out with friends, when there's no excuse other than, 'I've just decided drinking isn't for me.' During these two weeks I'm going to speak to people who have quit drinking for their physical health, to increase their productivity or because they felt it posed a threat to their mental health and ask them how abstaining from alcohol changed their lives. And I want to hear from you. Is this something you've done? Have you quit alcohol and seen a massive benefit? Or do you think a drink every now and again is perfectly fine? Bonus Episode: Joining me on a special mid-week episode of the show it's Carlene Higgins and Jill Dunn from the fabulous podcast Breaking Beauty. Like me, Carlene and Jill have a background in print journalism, but felt that the podcast was where it was at - and, of course, I agree! As they say in the tagline for their show, 'behind every bestselling beauty product, there's a damn good story,' and each week they put their journalistic hats on and take you behind a brand, trend or story from the beauty industry. They kindly had me on their show and I was only too happy to reciprocate. So here we are, on the phone via the internet so please bear with some of the audio issues, talking about knowing your worth (when others don't!), why it's important to diversify in a digital age and much much more... Ep 37Lindsey Kelk | How to Write a Best-Selling Book.
Elisten on itunes I Heart Forever on Kindle, £3.99. Lindsey Kelk (@lindseykelk) joins me on this episode of the podcast to talk about her I Heart... series, her podcast Full Coverage and her 'creative process'. We holed ourselves away in the Bobbi Brown Pro store in Soho to chat about how this Doncaster born-and-bred girl found herself living in LA, how she got her first book published and how that first book has turned into a 13, and counting, series. We chat about finding your best girlfriends, pushing outside your comfort zone, how her 'what might have been' motivated her to move to New York and why it shouldn't be weird to talk about your creative process. There's a lot of talk about awkward teenage years and always knowing there was something bigger out there in the world and finding yourself and your tribe. Lindsey and I met on twitter (@lindseykelk) where you can often find us wanging on about wrestling, beauty products and other important issues. To view Mark Kermode reviewing Entourage, which I strongly recommend you do, click this link >> ENTOU-RAGE. Off Camera with Sam Jones on YouTube. Lindsey mentioned her colourist, Naomi Knights, and you can find her here >> NAOMI KNIGHTS. If you enjoyed this conversation please do head over to iTunes and leave me a 5-star rating and review. also in this episode Dr Dennis Gross Spectralite is coming to the UK soon. The superhero style mask emits amber, red, deep red and infrared wavelengths that gently stimulate collagen production, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in just a few minutes every day for several weeks. I've developed a mild, scrap that, absolutely ridiculous obsession with Missoma jewellery. I saw some viewers asking Sam Chapman where her necklaces were from on an instagram live and she mentioned the brand so I found myself on their site having a mini-conniption about their earrings. If you're a regular listener you'll know I had three new piercings a few months ago and have been looking for hoops and studs that don't break the bank. Reader, I think I've found them. I'm crushing quite hard on the turquoise drop hoops and am incredibly keen to build up a wardrobe of the shield necklaces, oh, and the fang necklace. See, it's a problem. You may recognise Caggie from Made in Chelsea, but as she reveals in this episode, she always had 'one foot out of the door' and I ask her about not being seduced my the lure of step-and-repeats, showbiz parties and being headline news. We also talk about her creativity as a songwriter, poet and filmmaker and her issues with anxiety, how she's used meditation to overcome it and why it was important for her to talk about it on her podcast. Ep 35Emma Blackery | Is it ever too early to 'have it all'?
EListen on ituneslisten on acast Emma Blackery @emmablackery is an award-winning singer-songwriter and author whose YouTube Channel, Emma Blackery, has nearly 1.5 million subscribers. In this episode we talk about her new book Feel Good 101 (available on Amazon and from Waterstones) and how she wrote it as the handbook for life that she wished she'd had in her teens. We cover the tricky topics of anxiety and depression and how to make sense of them, what millennials are really like, why they get a hard time and the importance of having a focus and goals in life. My 'digital detox' in the New Forest, which actually involved more social lurking than actually switching off. I went to Lime Wood Hotel & Spa for a night to try to give myself a break from all things work, social media and, you know, routine. I picked the perfect place because Lime Wood really is a place where you can completely switch off and unwind - they've totally nailed that relaxed, no pressure atmosphere where there's never tension or stress in the air. The afternoon I arrived I went for a 'ramble' on one of their many routes in the woods - you just pick up a map from reception and off you go - and it was incredibly restorative, even the bit where I got a bit lost and panicked. I also allowed myself a wee spot of indulgence and a Nourish by Bamford spa treatment, which was possibly the best treatment I've ever had in my life. Three hours of massage, a facial and reflexology; coupled with my ramble the day before I felt refreshed and restored for the first time in a long while.Yes, Lime Wood is a beautiful location, but the moral of this story is that sometimes finding a pocket of time and allowing yourself to switch off, and actually acknowledging you deserve it, can be as restorative as a holiday.
