The Live Show: Sophie and Hannah Pycroft
Elisten on itunes listen on acast This episode of the show was recorded live at the Birchbox x Oliver Bonas Co-Working space in London on September 7th. Hannah and Sophie Pycroft from Spectrum Collections joined me to talk about their brand of makeup brushes and accessories that has taken social media by storm. The business was an idea born by the pool on holiday, but it hasn't been plain sailing and the sisters talk to me about sticking with it, even when it didn't seem like the best idea, and how a business advisor couldn't quite believe their plans... We talk challenges in business, packing orders in a windowless garage surviving on chocolate biscuits and coffee and why you have to turn everything - even a warehouse fire that destroys all your stock - into a positive. They also tell me about their best-seller The Glam Clam and the unusual moment when it was born. To subscribe to Birchbox, the UK's No. 1 Beauty Box, click here >> Birchbox Subscription. Ep 34Dr Sohère Roked | Top tips for Understanding Your Hormones.
EOne of the shows that has been most requested by listeners is all things hormones so I asked Sohère Roked, a GP and Bio-identical and Integrative Medical Specialist, if she would talk to me and shed a little light on what is a pretty complicated subject. Sohère talks about the frustrating experiences she had with female patients who would come in saying they didn't 'feel right' but whose blood tests would return with normal results leaving them at a total dead end. Sohère realised there was a very strong link between hormones and our general well-being and how even a small imbalance can contribute to feeling under par. In this conversation we talk about how you should be feeling during your menstrual cycle, in terms of what's normal or to be expected, Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), why a 360 approach to wellness is vital and why knowing yourself and how you feel is something we should all be checking in with. We also tackle the sticky topic of the cost involved with deep-diving into your hormones, the things you can do to identify if there's something amiss and the steps you can take to make yourself feel better. Sohère talks about her book The Tiredness Cure: How to beat fatigue and feel great for good and quizzes, cues and information within that can help you work towards feelings better. Ep 32Claire Coleman | Top tips for understanding the science in beauty.
EClaire Coleman (@featuresjourno/@featuresjourno) is a writer who, if you listen to the show regularly, will have heard referenced as a 'forensic beauty journalist' who loves nothing more than getting her teeth stuck into a clinical trial. As people who write about beauty we sit in the space between brands and the consumer offering an objective point of view about what a brand is up to in order to better help you make good decisions about how to spend your money. Claire's approach is to listen to what the brands have to say, but also by deep-dive into the independent data, clinical trials and by doing her own research into ingredients, innovations and developments. She does not care for fluff and nonsense and in this episode I ask her about her approach to writing about products, what she looks for from brands, what products, ingredients and innovations she thinks are worth paying attention to and what you should flat-out not get duped by. Take her on her word, she's very happy for you to tweet her @featuresjourno and you can read more of her work and find out more about Claire by visiting her website here >> https://www.clairecoleman.com/ As a result of our conversation Claire has created a list of products she would be happy to recommend - they can be found on her website here >> https://www.clairecoleman.com/blog-1 Claire mentioned these links/studies in the show and the links can be found below: Sam Farmer on parabens is here (8th question down) :http://www.samfarmer.co/education-click-question-read-my-response The study about lavender oil and breast tissue is here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17267908Hey! Ep 30Paula Begoun | Top Tips for Simplifying Your Beauty Regime.
EsubscribeOn this episode of the show I'm joined by Paula Begoun of Paula's Choice (@paulaschoiceuk) to talk about her skincare range, why she worries about all the misinformation about beauty out here on the internet and the two major changes we could all make to our beauty regimes for our best skin. Paula is a published author (here's her author page on Amazon.co.uk), was dubbed 'The Cosmetics Cop' by Oprah Winfrey and is a proud entrepreneur of 40 years - as you can imagine our conversation takes several twists and turns... From her days as a makeup artist, to suffering with acne and eczema and how that informed her feelings about topical skincare, to writing books and then starting her brand - it's all in here. We also talk about hormones and their effect on skin as well as health. In this episode of the show Paula talks about her Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant*, £25, a lightweight exfoliating fluid that helps breakdown dead skin cells for skin that looks more radiant and feels smoother. It's a great lotion to have in your beauty arsenal if your skin is prone to looking dull and is also a good line of defence against blackheads. If you want to get in touch with the show it's so easy - just email me at [email protected] and if you're enjoying the podcast please do leave me a 5-star rating and review on iTunes here. Dr Murad: Eyes Up, Being Unique and Kindness.
SubscribeDr Howard Murad is the man behind the skincare brand Murad known for its high performance, no-nonsense, problem-solving skincare. During a visit to London the LA-based dermatologist and I met to speak about the new and unexpected factors affecting the way in which we age. He has been dubbed 'The Father of Internal Skincare' and his knowledge is vast, but in this conversation with talk about why it's so crucially important to take a 360 approach not just to ageing, but to our lifestyles too. Dr Murad talked to me about his Eyes Up Campaign and how it's important we find a balance between how much we're online for the sake of our health as well as how we all fall into the habit of compromising and editing ourselves in a way that can impact our happiness - and our health. Dr Murad has been treating patients for over 50 years so he knows what people want, he knows what works and his advice is like pure gold bullion. You'll also be able to hear the fab Zoe Shaw, who you'll know if you watch Murad's presentations on QVC, who joined us for the chat too.MY top 3 picks for murad problem-solving skincareMurad Eye Lift Firming Treatment, £49.50.* My eyes can get really puffy when I'm stressed and/or tired - I blame staring at computers and wearing contact lenses - and when this eye treatment launched last year I was seriously impressed by the results. It's very simple to use too - just a couple of pumps on the eye patches, apply under the eyes and wait... It instantly calmed that feeling of 'puff' around my eyes and my eyes looked fresher immediately after use. I try to use this once a week and as well as the soothing effect on my eyes, it also gives me a reason to sit down for 15 minutes.Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield SPF30, £56.* I have no problem with a product that does as much as this one... I sometimes feel as though I'm layering too much on my skin so the fact this one cream does the job of five other products is a win/win for me. On application there's an instant 'blurring' or skin that seamlessly covers imperfections, such as pores, but it also hydrates, primes and has a broad spectrum SPF so your skin is protected throughout the day. Add to the mix a savvy blend of anti-ageing ingredients that stimulate collagen production and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and well, I'm sold. Hey! Ep 29Really Ree | Why you won't fail unless you quit.
ERee Lodge (@reallyree) and her website www.reallyree.com are the 'breaking news' of beauty. If it's launching, it's on her site, which is about to undergo a massive redesign, and being first, thorough and correct is of paramount importance to Ree. In this episode Ree talks to me about the early days of Really Ree, of joining twitter on a whim, writing blog posts, but also what life had looked like before she dominated the beauty news arena. She talks to me about her career in recruitment, where you could argue her competitive nature was born, and why she went from a high-paid job into a passion role and how she's gone on to monetise the latter. It's a really robust conversation where we cover topics including self-preservation, the idea of luck, guilt, motivation and she shares a brilliant piece of advice for anyone going after what they want in life: “You haven’t failed unless you give up.” — Ree Also in this episode... It was a busy week in beauty and among other things I went to the launch party for Real Techniques new collection Powder Bleu launching July 2017 - a new variety of brushes designed to be used with powder. The six-piece collection includes a Soft Complexion Brush, £22, a Soft Powder Brush, £22, Soft Finishing Brush, £22, Soft Shader Brush, £15, Soft Kabuki Brush, £25 and Plush Powder Puff, £12. The event was held in the Blue Room at The Curtain Hotel in Shoreditch and hosted by Sam Chapman and Nic Haste Chapman and included readings from the Psychic Sisters and entertainment from Britain's Got Talent Finalists DNA. The food from Red Rooster was next-level and reminded me of Hart of Dixie, which is never a bad thing. There are certain events that are just joyful and hanging out with Sam and Nic is always such a pleasure (listen to their podcast here) but also some of my favourite beauty colleagues; Sali Hughes, Nadine Baggott, Really Ree, Madeleine Spencer, Claire Coleman, Jo Glanville-Blackburn and many more... Her books You Are a Badass (How to stop doubting your greatness and start living an awesome life) and You Are a Badass at Making Money have spent over a year in the New York Times Bestseller list and inspired millions to take steps towards a better life. In this conversation Jen talks about being motivated and staying realistic, how to create a daily practise to help you get to where you want to be, why changing your vocabulary can make all the difference and why we should be afraid of rejection. Also in this episode... I went to the launch of Hair by Sam McKnight at Liberty and fell in love with his Cool Girl Texturising spray and bumped into superstar colourist Nicola Clarke, makeup artist to the stars Mary Greenwell, Jo Elvin, Edwina Ings-Chambers and Susannah Taylor. Ep 26Chloe Brotheridge | Tips for Recognising and Overcoming Anxiety.
Anxiety affects nearly a quarter of the population and as it's a topic that has come up more than once during podcasts with my guests I felt it was time to dig a little deeper into the topic. While it's completely normal to experience anxiety you may not be aware that you have it. Instead you may feel as though you're just highly stressed, a bit hormonal or just going through a rough patch. I've spoken on this podcast before about anxiety with guests including Luke Hersheson and Pixiwoo's Sam and Nic, as well as my own struggles, and in realising this was a much bigger issue was keen to speak to an expert on the subject. Chloe Brotheridge has written the book The Anxiety Solution, which is a really important read whether you suffer with anxiety yourself, or know someone who does. As well as detailing her own experiences with anxiety and panic attacks the book also offers realistic solutions to bringing down your anxiety levels as well as the comfort of reassuring you that you're not alone. In this podcast we talk about Chloe's book, her own experiences with anxiety, how to spot the warning signs that you're not just stressed, how to help someone you know through anxiety and the benefits of meditation and yoga. Chloe's website www.calmer-you.com provides another resource with links to helpful sites as well as a downloadable meditation and details of her upcoming events, as well as how to get in touch with her. I hope you find this podcast helpful. ECarmen Carrera (@carmen_carrera/@carmen_carrera) joins me on this episode of the show and we cover a lot of ground. From her blossoming acting career, her Showgirl show, her tireless work as an activist within the LGBTQ community as well as how she navigated her own transition. I first came to know of Carmen when she appeared in series three of RuPaul's Drag Race, but a lot has changed since then. Immediately after the show finished filming Carmen began to transition and her birth certificate now reads 'female', a change she admits made her feel 'powerful' and 'validated'. In this episode of the show we talk about her early years in high school, how she navigated the school halls while knowing that she wasn't being her true self, how her friends and mother played a crucial role in her accepting and believing in herself. We talk about her acting career and starring alongside Meryl Streep, being friends with J.Lo and life after Drag Race. Carmen also talks to me about her tireless work as an activist and the documentary Outpost and highlighting the fact that rates of violence against the LGBTQ community in Sao Paolo are among the highest in the world. She also tells me about supporting Gavin Grimm, the transgender teen who was prevented from using the boys' toilets in his school, and why a curriculum of LGBTQ history in schools is a positive step to creating safety and protection for the community. In our conversation we talk about her early journalistic career, being a mum and what it was that prompted her to start Mother Pukka and why the campaign for flexible working for parents is so important to her. I dare you not to be inspired by Anna, not least because she doesn't sugar-coat her messaging, but because she's being true to herself - and in this episode of the show she talks about the highs and lows of doing just that. Her blog post 'I Quit' is mentioned during the show and explains exactly why flexible working is so important to her. Ep 19Caroline Hirons | How to leave the corporate world and create your own business.
ERock chicks of the world unite! Caroline and I met at a Mötley Crüe concert, which is why this show starts, not with a deep-dive into all things skincare, but a reverie of our favourite rock bands - and rock gods. We talk about the concerts we were both at in the 1980s, the rock stars that make us go weak at the knees and Caroline's incredible backstage experiences... Music aside, Caroline is famous in the beauty world for her no-nonsense approach to skincare - an objective approach earned from over thirty years in the industry. Her reviews have the ability to sell-out product - dubbed 'The Caroline Hirons Effect' - and leave the shelves of major beauty retailers completely bare. She has worked on the shop floor, has consulted for years with brands and has probably had something to do with the creation of many of the products living in your bathroom cabinet right now. Because, who doesn't love an instagram story..? Caroline is someone I've admired for a while, not least because she seems true to and at ease with herself. When she speaks people listen and I wanted to unpick when she realised her voice was one that was being heard by a huge audience, as well as by the upper echelons of the industry. As she says in the show, having spent years in corporate business, realising that her true voice was one that was influential felt great. It's a responsibility she doesn't take lightly and Caroline is a bit like your best friend and your mum - and perhaps that's why she's garnered such a massive global audience who really trust her. Her website www.carolinehirons.com is a portal reviews, advice and must-read 'cheat sheets' and you can follow her on instagram @carolinehirons and twitter @carolinehirons. Pic credit: Dan Kennedy Caroline launched her first ever skincare product this year - Pixi + Caroline Hirons Double Cleanse, £24, and I ask her whether we can expect more products and innovations with her name on it... We also chat about acne and her tips for how to handle it and why it's such an emotional issue. As a qualified facialist Caroline talks about intuition and about the times either putting her hands on someone's skin or seeing something she thought was suspicious has possibly saved lives. Luke Hersheson: Passion, Creativity and Drive.
EJoining me in this episode of the show is Luke Hersheson (@lukehersheson) the Creative Director at Hersheson's (@hershesons) salons and a member of The House of Experts at John Frieda. Let me just say this at the outset - Luke was a brilliant guest, not least because he's been tuning into the podcast and loves the show! In our conversation we talk about the fact Luke knew he wanted to follow his father's footsteps into hairdressing from a very young age, what it's like to have a busy, creative mind, his desire to want to make salons relevant again, travelling the world with supermodels and his pursuit of excellence. We each talk about our experiences with anxiety and the steps we've taken to overcome what feel, at times, crippling. Luke tells me the story of how he was signed and started working on global advertising campaigns. His first trip, in 2001, was with supermodel Gisele for Missoni and he explains what it's really like to have to step up to the plate and how creativity comes together on a shoot. As well as Gisele Luke has styled Victoria Beckham, Sali Hughes, Emma Watson and Sienna Miller - among many others. Also in this episode of the show we talk about the technical revolution, how perhaps social media didn't seem like something we had to get involved with when platforms such as Facebook and Twitter started cropping up, but also how to find balance in a world of technical/social overload. We talk about meditation, the apps to use and the techniques that can help you find balance as well as Luke's plans for the future and how he goes about setting goals. Finally Luke and I chat about drive, about how passion spurs you on to work even harder, but also how to find a balance and why it's important to find and appreciate moments of calm between the frenetic schedules of fashion week and the like. We also kick the show off with an embarrassing tale from fashion week a few years ago when I stumbled into Luke at a party wearing one of the Hersheson Clip In Fringes. Every home should have one! There's no pesky waiting around for your hair to grow out after you've had a fringe cut in and it's so easy to clip-in and clip-out. I wish I could tell you I was a good model for it... The clip-in hair is just one part of Hersheson's excellent accessories offering - why not have a browse >> Hersheson's Accessories. The anxiety essence I reference in the show is from Helios >> Boronia Flower.Hey! Why not share your thoughts and insights to make your listening experience even better. Ep 18Nadine Baggott | Top tips for Understanding the Science of Skincare
EOne good thing about being 5'4" - snuggle potential with my taller guests.Back by popular demand! In her second visit to The Emma G Podcast Nadine (@nadinebaggott/@nadinebaggott) returns to delve into, and debunk, skincare myths. You may know her as the Health & Beauty Editor of Hello! or as The Beauty Know It All over on YouTube, but one thing is for sure, she is an endless resource of skincare knowledge and beauty know-how. After her first visit, where we discussed Generation Y, #antisocialmedia and how she came to carve out one of the beauty industry's most impressive careers, listeners wanted more - and you've got it! Here she talks cosmetic procedures, what you really need from your skincare and her healthy sense of skepticism. But it's a 90 minute show so we obviously indulged in a little Real Housewives chatter...Nadine is all about honesty - #nofilter #nofacetune and #ownyourshitIn this episode Nadine explains why she's so passionate about skincare. Why every woman should be googling the ingredients on their product labels - knowledge is power - and whether you really need to spend money on your anti-ageing creams. We also chat about her rules for sunbathing, whether or not essential oils should play a role in your beauty buying and why she loves a skincare expert in a white coat. Ever thought about going under the knife, getting injectables or having a laser treatment? Nadine gives a no-holds-barred account of what the pain is really like and whether the results are worth it. And if you've ever felt guilty about falling asleep in your makeup, listen to Nadine - you won't anymore...Check out Nadine's product know-how and ingredient knowledge...Note: Nadine called me after our chat to say she should have said Vitamin B3 and not Vitamin B12 when she was talking about Niacinamide. Ep 17Dr Dennis Gross | Top tips for Healthy Skin
Dr Dennis Gross is one of the world's leading authorities in skincare. He is a dermatologist, scientist and dermatologic surgeon and I was thrilled to get the chance to have him on the show to talk about his own range of skincare - Dr Dennis Gross - and pick his brain about skincare generally, the types of ingredients we should be looking for in our products as well as when and how to look after our skin as we get older. What's wonderful about Dr Dennis Gross is his ability to make what can be quite complicated extremely simple and when it comes to skincare his approach is, 'If something doesn't make you look good then it's not working.' Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel, £73.50 at Selfridges I met with Dr Gross during his visit to London to launch his products into Selfridges, which includes his iconic Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel - a two-step daily regimen that smoothes and firms skin gently. The entire collection can be viewed here - Selfridges. Given his background in skin cancer I asked him to share his ABCDs of what to look out for, how to check yourself and why 'pink is the new red'. His website www.dennisgrossmd.com is a brilliant resource if you want some further reading on the subject. Finally, I couldn't resist quizzing Dr Gross about what else we can expect from him and from his range. He tells me about what's to come including new technology, devices, unique ingredients and light sources. Plus I also rave at him about the incredible Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Face, which I discovered via Alessandra Steinherr and which I urge everyone to try - it's one of my hero products. Dr Gross told me during our chat, 'I want people to try products that make them feel happy and look good' and his Glow Pads certainly deliver on that.Hey! Ep 16The Elimination Show
EThis episode of the show follows a slightly different format from the usual long-form interviews. I'm talking all things elimination and by that I mean the unavoidable topic of cutting out particular food types. I'm not, for one second, suggesting that anybody cuts out either dairy, gluten or sugar without good reason - consulting a GP or nutritional therapist, for example, should be the first move. However, if it is a decision you have come to then this show features interviews with three real women who, for reasons of their health and/or wellbeing, have cut out either gluten, dairy or sugar. The purpose of this podcast is to simplify what can be a bamboozling topic, not to promote the idea of making radical changes to one's diet. Before we get into the interviews I asked Judy Johnson (@jjjourno/@judy_jay) from Get the Gloss onto the show to talk about the rising 'noise' around clean eating movements, elimination and extreme diet regimes. Layla talks changing taste buds...Talking about her reasons for and experience with cutting out dairy is Layla Randle-Conde (@laylabombayla) from Earth Zest Cosmetics. The unexpected side-effect of no longer consuming dairy is one I certainly hadn't expected...Scroll to 13:00 for my interview with Layla.More addictive than a Class A drug?Joining me to talk all things sugar is Emma Stavrinides (@moreliemoo/@emmastavrinides) whose experience of cutting out the sweet stuff when her health was threatened was featured in a Women's Health article here >> Real Life: I lost 4 stone in 9 months. Her perspective on looking at it as a lifestyle change, not a diet, is a useful one.Scroll to 27:30 for my chat with Emma.Tired of your tummy troubles..?Finally Lauren Naylor (@laurenpnaylor/www.laurenpatricia.com) opens up about her years of embarrassing IBS attacks and how cutting gluten from her diet made all the difference. If you've suffered with IBS - and Lauren doesn't hold back in her description of some of hers - then you may be interested in how cutting out gluten has helped her manage them.Scroll to 53:00 to hear Lauren's story. If you did catch the Horizon Documentary: Clean Eating the Dirty Truth you might like to read this piece by Zoe Harcombe (@zoeharcombe) on the Clean Eating Movement. As I've mentioned, this podcast does not support eliminating anything from your diet without first finding out if it's necessary. With the noise, confusion and sometimes conflicting information around the best diets, how to eat and what to avoid out there, what I'm supporting is the idea of being informed. Hey! Ep 15Joanna McGarry | How to Switch Careers in Your 30s
Joanna McGarry (joanna_mcgarry/joanna_mcgarry) joins me to talk about 'adding threads' to her considerable talents. A beauty journalist for over a decade Jo recently made the decision to embark on a full-time degree in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. The idea of a 'mid life leap' - making a dramatic shift from a career to a calling - has been around for some time, but in Jo's case she is broadening her knowledge, rather than choosing one over the other. I couldn't wait to sit down with Jo to find out why Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture called to her and how she was going about continuing to contribute to one of the country's most popular magazines as their Beauty Director-at-Large. In my time with Jo we talk in detail about how she came to make the decision, what it's really like to go back to school in your thirties and why timing was an important factor. Somehow, via talk of meditation, we also bond over a love for reality TV, where we sourced our style inspiration as teens without the likes of instagram and twitter and how mindfulness is playing a role in both our lives. links to the podcasts, books, features and documentaries mentioned in the show... Ep 14Marisa Peer | How Hypnotherapy can help you beat your demons.
Marisa Peer (@marisapeer/@marisapeertherapy) is a motivational speaker, celebrity therapist, behavioural expert and pioneering hypnotherapist trainer who invited me to her London home to record this episode of the show. She is listed in the Tatler Guide of Britain's Best Doctors, was named Best British Therapist by Men's Health and counts celebrities, Olympians, CEOs and Royalty among her clients. In researching Marisa I spent hours on YouTube watching her talks and the main take-away, for me, was that how you are today isn't how you have to be tomorrow. If you catch yourself saying things such as, 'I always do ____' and feel helpless to not do ____ again, then Marisa's methodology is well worth exploring. We all have patterns, but in this conversation Marisa explains the simplicity with which you can free yourself, especially if you feel a certain behavioural pattern - such as emotional eating - is holding you back or not allowing you to live the life you want to.At the core of her messaging is this idea of being 'enough'. Indeed she has 'I AM ENOUGH' written in lipstick on all the mirrors in her home and has given many talks (I've listed some you can find on YouTube below) where she outlines how not feeling enough can be at the core of the issues we all face. I feel very privileged to have been able to spend time one-on-one with Marisa and meeting her had a very positive effect on me, as I hope this podcast does on you. Ep 13Eve Kalinik | Top tips for managing your gut health.
EEve Kalinik (@evekalinik/@evekalinik) is a nutritional therapist and innovative food thinker. In previous podcasts I've talked to guests about the gut being the 'second brain', but with Eve there's an argument for saying it's the first brain. Eve's approach isn't about fads or unsustainable plans - in fact she gives them all short shrift, as you'll hear - but rather a way of finding a balanced approach to what you eat to support health, wellbeing and positive changes in the body. Did you know your stomach acid should be like battery acid? In this conversation Eve shares some facts we all need to know about our bodies, debunks myths, talks about the emotional connection we have with our food, and why some of our 'bad habits' might not be 'bad habits' at all, and actually the result of cravings caused by subtle, an easily fixable, imbalances in the gut. If you've ever wondered what probiotics and prebiotics are, and what they can do for your gut health, Eve breaks in down in one very nifty action movie analogy. I recorded this podcast and wondered why I'd never seen a nutritional therapist before, if you feel the same you can get in touch with Eve via her website: EVE KALINIK. EJo Tutchener-Sharp (@jotutcheners/@jotutchenersharp) is the Founder of children's clothing range Scamp & Dude (@scampanddude/@scampanddude) which launched in the UK in November 2016. The idea for the collection, which has the motto 'a superhero has my back' at its core, came from Jo's experience with a sudden and life-threatening condition. In this episode of the show Jo talks to me about the moment the brand was born, how she's gone from having an idea in a hospital bed, in January 2016, to being one of the most written about and exciting new brands around. We discuss how Jo's health issues have changed her approach to life, how she plans to grow her business into a global brand, and why it's hard work, guts, grit and a lot of planning that get you where you want to be. She also tells me about how her intuition has changed since having brain surgery... I learned a lot from Jo in this episode and I hope you do too. Matthew Curtis: Willpower, Work Ethic and Trusting the Process
EI met Matthew Curtis (@matthewcurtishair) on a press trip last year and though we may have only known each other a short while, he's one of my favourite people in the industry. We bonded, in part, over hair loss. I have mild female pattern baldness and Matthew has had his own issues with hair loss, and the way he spoke to me about his experience, and how I could manage my own situation, was gentle, kind and I really felt like he was on my side and knew what I was going through. We've established he's a really nice guy, right? But he's also an impressive businessman. He's a hugely talented hair stylist who has been the ambassador for brands, been the lead stylist backstage at fashion shows in London, New York, Paris and Milan, worked with numerous celebrities and has many TV credits under his belt. It's an impressive CV and there's more, much more, that Matthew wants to achieve. He's just opened a concession salon in the very beautiful Rosewood Hotel in London, has a beautiful salon at Hoarcross Hall and his home salon, if you will, is in Stratford-upon-Avon - next stop, the world? I talk to Matthew about how he's achieved so much since starting out working at Toni & Guy, what his aspirations are for the future and when he's going to find time to take a holiday. We chat about work ethic, being a wheeler-dealer, the importance of having confidence in yourself and not getting caught up in the muck and bullets. Ep 8Henrietta Norton | The supplements to help manage stress.
Should you be taking supplements? Are you stressed? Have you been stressed for a while? In this episode of The Beauty Podcast with Emma G I'm joined by Henrietta Norton (@henriettanorton) from Wild Nutrition (@wildnutrition) who answers these questions, and more... In addition I quiz her on adrenal fatigue and adrenal exhaustion. Have you, or do you, feel stressed all the time? If you're constantly running on adrenalin - think panic over whether you've answered all your emails, staring into the blue-light of your smart phone until all hours, worrying about getting every done - then you may actually be stressed from being stressed. Henrietta lists the signs of stress and adrenal fatigue so listen on if you want to check off your stressors... We also talk about the Danish culture of hygge, how to lower your stress levels and how to make small incremental changes that can help you lead a healthier life. And if meditation is something that is on your list of things you're going to get around to - but it's been on that list for over 12 months - then Henrietta's words of wisdom may actually prompt you to make it a priority. This won't be Henrietta's first visit to The Beauty Podcast with Emma G, so if you listen to the show and want to ask her any questions email me at [email protected] and she will answer them next time. Ep 7Shaun Pulfrey | How to become a self-made beauty millionaire.
Tangle Teezer (@tangleteezer) is arguably one of the business world's most surprising, and inspiring, success stories in recent years, and I was very honoured to be able to sit down with the brand's CEO and Inventor, Shaun Pulfrey to be able to learn about this incredible story. I personally can't remember a time before the Tangle Teezer existed: the hairbrush that fits perfectly, and ergonomically, in your hand and glides through hair painlessly detangling knots in its path. It's a huge hit with parents who no longer have to fight to get a comb through their children's hair at bath time and provides an instant 'refresh' to styled hair. Perhaps what first brought Shaun and the Tangle Teezer to our attention was his appearance on BBC2's Dragon's Den in 2007, where Shaun offered the assembled Dragons, including Deborah Meaden, James Caan and Duncan Bannatyne, 15% equity in the company for an £80,000 investment. Shaun, and his plastic brush, were dismissed as 'hair-brained' but viewers were so impressed that the day after the programme aired the Tangle Teezer website was inundated with orders. The rest, as they say, is history... In it's nearly ten years Tangle Teezer has gone on to be sold in over 70 countries and counts celebrities including Victoria Beckham as fans of the brush, which comes in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes. What struck me during this conversation with Shaun was how the idea was born. Shaun was a hair colourist in some pretty fancy London salons and wanted to send his clients to their stylist with freshly coloured hair that was tangle-free. What is now a global brand was back then a practical tool that he knew he needed, but couldn't find. I learned a lot during this conversation, not least that there was a whole other life-changing story that ran parallel to the invention and launch of the Tangle Teezer. If reports are to be believed Tangle Teezer is now valued at over £200m so I wanted to find out from Shaun what it's like to go from earning a £-per-hour wage to being a multi-millionaire entrepreneur. I hope you enjoy this episode of The Beauty Podcast where it's hard not to feel inspired and cheer Shaun on for everything he's achieved. Enjoy! EG xxHey! Davis Factor & Lori Taylor-Davis: Collaboration, Invention and the 3 'L's.
Davis Factor (@davisfactor) and Lori Taylor-Davis (@lotayray44) are the creative forces behind Smashbox Cosmetics and they stopped by The Beauty Podcast's studio on a recent visit to London to talk all things Smashbox, inspiration, creation and a lot more besides... Davis is a world renowned photographer who has seen the world's greatest beauties through his lens. He is the great-grandson of the legendary Max Factor and the creator of the original Smashbox studio - the creative hive that's been the birthplace of some of the most iconic images of the last 25 years. Lori, or LTD, is Smashbox's Global Pro Lead Artist - name a celebrity or a supermodel and chances are she's made them look crazily beautiful at some point. Furthermore, Lori has an incredible philosophy about the power of make-up and its ability to heal. If you enjoyed the podcasts with Daniel Sandler and Jay Manuel, you're going to love this one. Smashbox started life in 1990 as a photographic studio in LA and quickly became the go-to studio for the world's most famous photographers, so much so it had to move and expand quickly to satisfy demand. What's unique about the range of cosmetics is that they are formulated, in the first instance, through Davis' eye through his lens, add Lori's insight and skill into the mix and you have a little bit of magic. As a beauty lover I adore their products and as a beauty editor I have no problem recommending them because I know people will try them, love them and I'll look good as a result... Having spent time with them I also LOVE the energy I feel when I'm around them, and I hope you feel it too. Enjoy! EG xx P.S. You can follow Lori's husband DJ Big D on instagram here - @deejbigd Hey! Ep 6Jay Manuel | Top tips for switching careers.
Jay Manuel (@mrjaymanuel) joins me in this episode to talk about the launch of his make-up range Jay Manuel Beauty onto QVC in the UK this September. He wowed me with a never-seen-before-texture and also explained his vision for finding true beauty inside and out. In this conversation we also talk about the idea of crowd-sourcing on social media and the validation of 'likes' and 'follows' and his viewpoint is that we should strive to self-source. He also tells me about his journey of personal development, what years as a judge on a reality elimination show taught him about ambition and let's me in on one of his more personal projects the Discover You events. In this show Jay talks about the Eckhart Tolle book A New Earth: Create A Better Life and the impact it had on him, and we also discuss the real meaning of The Matrix. You can follow Jay Manuel Beauty on Twitter @jaymanuelbeauty and to keep up with Jay on instagram head to @mrjaymanuel where you can follow his travels, events and gorgeous pooches... Enjoy! Debbie Thomas: Lasers, Passion and Hard Work.
Debbie Thomas (@DebbieThomasSkin) is known as the London Laser Queen. Why? As she tells me in this episode of the podcast, once she saw the positive effects IPL (Intense Pulse Light) could have on skin there was no turning back. In this episode of the podcast I headed to Debbie's London clinic and she shares unmissable advice on how to treat and manage your skin, but it also becomes clear that in Debbie's hands it's not just your skin, but your confidence, that she's careful to nourish. I suffered with terrible acne as a teenager and though the spots have cleared up, in the main, my confidence is still battle-scarred by the experience. I wish my teenage-self had been able to listen to someone like Debbie. Debbie doesn't deal with spots, but takes a look at everything to figure out what's really going on and why your skin behaving the way it is. In addition to her unique brand of facials and skincare Debbie also tells me how she went from Holistic Therapist to one of the most in-demand skin care experts today. It's an incredible journey - and it's not over yet... If you have any skincare questions or Debbie's advice helps you, do let me know my getting in touch at The Beauty Podcast. Thanks for listening! Ateh Jewel: Taking risks, having it all and RuPaul.
EAteh Jewel (@atehjewel) is my guest in this episode of The Beauty Podcast and she tells me about her fabulous website Jewel Tones Beauty while we do a little bit of over-heating in her car. In this conversation we talk about life, love, why taking the harder road is the most rewarding path, and a chat between Ateh and I just wouldn't be right without referencing the legendary RuPaul and RuPaul's Drag Race. One of our topics of conversation is the piece Ateh wrote on her website called Mummy, why is your tummy so big? and it prompts a discussion about body image and self worth. Ateh has been a beauty journalist for years, but aged just 24 decided to go it alone and make it as a freelancer. This is no mean feat and it's testament to Ateh that she has been one of the most prolific freelancers writing about beauty in glossy magazines, newspapers and online for over a decade. In addition to this, Ateh runs Couture Communications, a digital film production company, who work with brands including Chanel, Vogue, L'Oreal, Lancome, The Body Shop and Benefit - to name just a few. The Jewel Tones Facebook page has just reached over 15,000 followers and you can also keep up-to-date with Ateh on her Instagram feed. Paul Percival & Adam Reed: Reflection, Creativity and Naughtiness.
EJoining me in this episode are Adam Reed and Paul Percival of Percy & Reed and we talk about everything from their incredible careers, creating the Percy & Reed brand, working with celebrities, the kind of fame that comes from working with the A-list, getting recognised in the supermarket and much more besides. I learned such a lot from Paul and Adam and really appreciated their generosity in telling me about their journey to create such a stand-out brand. We also had a good old natter about the beauty industry, blogging, working with editors and how they come to create their products. Speaking on their products, I highly recommend you try them if you haven't already. My fine hair is nothing without their Bodifying Cream and you can view the whole range here --> Percy & Reed Products. Ampika Pickston: Entrepreneur, Buddhist, Housewife.
EAmpika Pickston is probably best known as part of the cast of The Real Housewives of Cheshire on ITVBe, where she navigates the glitzy world of fast cars, designer handbags and footballers' wives... When I found out she was launching her own range of haircare, Ampika Lox, I jumped at the chance to invite her on the show because, as a fan of Bravo TV's most successful franchise, I hadn't failed to spot Ampika's self-confidence and sense of self, so chatting beauty with one of my favourite housewives was a no-brainer. Truthfully, I had no idea what to expect from my meeting with Ampika but when she greeted me at the door of her London penthouse with a hug and offered me a glass of water in monogrammed stemware I knew we were in for a good chat. In this episode of The Beauty Podcast with Emma G Ampika tells me all about her haircare range, her passion for being a businesswoman and where she gets her entrepreneurial spirit. But rather surprisingly the first thing we talk about is meditation, which takes us on a journey of Ampika's childhood and Buddhism, her passion for journalling, how she manages work and motherhood, and her belief that a healthy mind is an active mind. The book Ampika is currently reading is: Speeches That Changed the World available on Amazon. Daniel Sandler: Creating beauty icons, the power of transformation and getting on with it...
EDaniel Sandler (@danielsandler) is the creator of the beauty icon Watercolour Blush and one of the most prominent names in the beauty industry. His career spans over 20 years and in this episode of the show we go right back to where it all began. Daniel tells me about his freckly teen years in London and how he dove into make-up for its ability to transform. We talk about his career working on some of the most iconic faces in fashion, being in the mix during the 90s and the era of the supermodel and how he turned his passion for 'naturally glamorous' make-up into his hugely successful product line. Daniel is incredibly wise and I could listen to him all day, not just because of his story-telling, honesty and experience, but because he has a voice as smooth as a cup of Cuban coffee. Anna-Marie Solowij and Millie Kendall MBE are to the beauty world what Meryl Streep is to film and BeautyMART, the website, store and concessions, combines their incredible knowledge. They have so many credits to their name - Anna-Marie has over 25 years experience in beauty and is the former Beauty Director of British Vogue, while Millie has launched many household beauty brands and was one half of the iconic make-up range Ruby & Millie. BeautyMART is their edit of the best beauty buys around and to quote them it consists of 'all the best, none of the rest'. Marc Elrick: Tanning, The Law of Attraction and the Number 23 Bus
EMarc Elrick from Tan Luxe (@tan_luxe) is my guest in this episode of The Beauty Podcast and boy do we have a giggle. It's hard not to when you have someone like Marc in the room - he's positive, energetic and extremely creative, which makes him a joy to be around. Marc is the CEO and Founder of Tan Luxe, which has become an instant hit for its easy-to-use, no fuss approach to achieving a healthy-looking, believable tan, so I wanted to sit him down to find out about his incredibly upbeat approach to life and how this former advertising executive is now the CEO of one of the beauty world's most exciting news brands. I met Marc last summer, just after the brand launched, and instantly fell-in-love with his energy and was also fascinated by the products and the story of Tan Luxe. In this show he tells us about how it all started, what we can expect in the future and I make him tell me how he stays so upbeat and positive. In the show Marc mentions: The Secret: @thesecret The Sedona Method. And Tan Luxe is also available on QVC - to watch his most recent presentation or to buy click here --> Tan Luxe on QVC. Anna Reich: Strength, honesty and hungry muscles.
EPersonal trainer Anna Reich (@APT_AnnaReich/@APTAnna) joins me in this episode to talk all things fitness. We can all buy gym memberships and healthy foods with the best of intentions, but there's a lot of information out there about 'health' and it's easy to feel a confused by all the noise. Anna comes from the school of strength - we're talking weights, heavy weights, to achieve a smoking hot physique, but also a high-performance, fat-burning machine of a body. More than that, she knows that a lot of the progress we make in the gym and with our diets starts with education and the right mindset. Her advice is simple, 'If you're unhappy about your weight or the way you look, there's actually a lot you can do about it.' Anna's physique is testament to the incredible changes you can make to your body in the weights room and though you may be a fan of cardio classes, heed Anna's advice, 'Don't be a sheep in a leotard'. Anna's website can be found here - Anna Reich PT and she is also on Facebook at A-PT. Enjoy xxHey! Why not share your thoughts and insights to make your listening experience even better. Ep 5Alexia Hargrave | Top Tips for Getting Out of Your Own Way
Alexia Hargrave (@alexiaandsuns) joins me in this episode to talk about the value of 'being' and her latest venture SPACE - a retreat designed to help you reconnect with 'the best version of you'. Alexia's career is impressive with highlights including over a decade at Virgin working with Richard Branson as well as coordinating events with The Elders. She struck out on her own launching her business Alexia and Suns in 2009 and SPACE was born in 2015 after Alexia took her own 'time out' to figure out what to do next. Even an afternoon drinking green tea with Alexia made me want to go out and conquer the world, such is her energy and enthusiasm, and in this show we talk about how to make your dreams a reality, how to shut out negative noise and the value of being present. Alexia mentions Coleen and Lucy Annabella available at Space - details can be found here --> Lucy Annabella. My friend's blog on Reiki, meditation and much much more can be found at Your Emmy-Lou.
