Grace Franklin returns to The Context of White Supremacy. Ms. Franklin is a founding member of OKC Artists For Justice. She visited with us in the spring of 2015 to hightlight the case of alleged sexual terrorist and former Oklahoma City enforcement officer, Daniel Holtzclaw. Holtzclaw was arrested in August of 2014 and is charged with 36 counts of sexual assaults exclusively targeting black females. Even with all of the bevy of attention on police terrorism against black people, this case has been widely tuned out. Ms. Franklin and colleagues have worked tirelessly to bring attention to this case, while insisting that black mothers, black sisters and black daughters be valued and protected. We'll get her views on the trial's opening week. Holtzclaw's case continues to receive paltry attention, which would be the complete opposite if he was black or if his victims had been White. While black females in Oklahoma receive no sympathy, Whites are singing a different tune about the "war on drugs" now that throngs of Whites are languishing with heroin, prescription medication and methamphetamine addiction. For nearly a half century Whites have offered no compassion but lots of jail time for black people suffering from substance abuse issues. Whites also invested a sizable chunk of time sulking about recent data showing rising death rates for middle-aged Whites. Mr. Rivlin is a White man; while working for the New York Times he covered the cataclysmic engineering failure and negligence that demolished New Orleans in August of 2005. His 2015 bestseller reviews a decade of asymmetrical "recovery." To make it plain, ten years of black New Orleanians being racially dislocated and deliberately deterred from reconstructing their lives. While much was said about the contemptable and common abuse of a black South Carolina child, nothing was said about the upcoming trial of Daniel Holtzclaw, which is slated for Monday, November 2nd. Alleged predators like Holtzclaw prompted one black male to seek sanctuary north of the U.S. border in Canada. Dr. Travis Bristol visits The Context of White Supremacy. A Research and Policy Fellow with the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education, Dr. Bristol investigates the practices that support teacher and student learning and the policies that enable and constrain teacher workplace experiences and retention. He's also a consultant for the World Bank. We'll explore his research on forces driving black male teachers out of the classroom. He suggests that for many black educators, having little support from White colleagues or resources to help navigate White-dominated schools made staying in the classroom undesirable. We'll examine strategies to retain and encourage black teachers and how black children are harmed when the person in front of the class is always White. A coallition of black scholars at American University in Washington, D.C. refused to quietly endure Racist abuse from their fellow White classmates. The trifling social media posts recieved widespread attention in March of this year. NBC's Washington affiliate reported university administrators "announced a forum would take place... to 'advance AU toward its ideal as an inclusive community.'" The suspected White Supremacist leanings of GOP Majority Whip Steve Scalise are nearly forgotten; he's now positioning himself to nab House Speaker John Boehner's job. And while Whites feign rage about lax gun laws, the two year "anniversary" of Miriam I. Carey being summarily executed in the nation's capitol continues to be ignored. Documentary filmmaker, professor and journalist June Cross visits The Context of White Supremacy. She uses her skill to "tell stories about the people other people think don't matter." She's a tenured professor at the Columbia Journalism School and produced a large body of fine work with PBS' NewsHour. We'll investigate her 2009 documentary, The Old Man And The Storm. She narrates the extraordinary story of the the Gettridge family. Cross and many other media outlets met Herbert Gettridge when he was 82-years-old and amongst the debris of the epic catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina and the levee failure. Mr. Gettridge worked tirelessly - and mostly without assistance - to rebuild his house in the Lower Ninth Ward. Cross records Mr. Gettridge's monumental strength and gets his commentary on the state of the recovery in New Orleans. It's easily once of the top films made on Katrina. The 3rd generation physician, author, and psychiatrists was last with us the day after the Charleston, South Carolina massacre. In June, Dr. Welsing insisted that Dylann Roof was on a White Supremacist mission at Emanuel A.M.E. church. It's been nearly 60 days since the killings, and Dr. Welsing submits that just like the summer of 2015, this tragedy has receded abruptly. Black Louisiana residents have yet to completely recover from the devastation. Things are similarly less than ideal a year later in Ferguson. The manslaughter trial for the 2013 shooting death of Jonathan Ferrell opened this week. Ferrell was described as a weed smoking "zombie" who would not comply with the White officers' commands.
