The Context of White Supremacy hosts the debut study session on Ernest Tidyman's 1970 novel, SHAFT. Tidyman is a White man. He forged a distinguished journalism career working for The New York Times and Ohio's The Plain Dealer. In the midst of the so called Civil Rights Movement and the unrest of the 1960's, Tidyman decided to concoct a narrative around a black private detective named John SHAFT. This relatively short book sparked a half century of trashy films and mightily influenced the thoughts, speech, action, emotions, and wardrobe of generations of black people. Most of these victims are clueless that there favorite black action hero is the creation of a White man. Gus is excited to closely scrutinize a work that depicts SHAFT as a "bi-sexual" Vietnam veteran out to stick it to "The Man." The film adaptation of Tidyman's work is also a spectacular illustration of Racial Showcasing. The director was Gordan Parks, Richard Roundtree starred in the film, and Isaac Hayes' legendary soundtrack remains beloved and recognized a half century later. Hayes owns an Academy Award for his contributions to SHAFT. This franchise of films, along with the late Melvin Van Peebles, is credited with introducing the era of "Blaxploitation" films - cheaply made movies, bloated with crime and gratuitous sexual content, featuring mostly black characters. Labor Day celebrations would be decidedly dampened with the numerous U.S. disasters unfolding. The Context of White Supremacy examines the catastrophe in Louisiana where Hurricane Ida is pummeling the region. This storm - described as the most powerful to touch Louisiana since 1850, touched down 16 years to the day since Hurricane Katrina and the levee failure. With more than 1,000 black people perishing during the first week of the storm, the 2005 catastrophe remains one of the deadliest occurrences in U.S. history. The Taliban is accused of a terrorist attack on a Kabul airport, where at least 60 Afghans (non-white people) and thirteen U.S. citizens perished. These events were drowned out in some quarters where attention was focused on the so called "milk crate challenge." Conspicuously, viral videos erupted where almost exclusively black people harmed themselves while scaling a pyramid of milk crates. This led to a number of businesses to immediately institute vaccine mandates for employees. The Pentagon followed suit, requiring all members of the armed forces to be vaccinated. Ironically, Delta Airlines (sharing the name of the current covid variant menacing the planet) announced that unvaccinated employees must pay a monthly $200 surcharge. Cuomo says he has more governing to do. Speaking of dastardly conduct, Missouri’s Derontae Martin, a 19-year-old black boy, died under suspicious circumstances, but was ruled a suicide victim. This week a court rejected the idea of Martin dying from self-inflicted injury, and turned suspicion to Martin’s “White friends” who were with him at the time of his death. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 5th study session on Randall Sullivan's LAbyrinth : A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B. I. G., the Implications of Death Row Records' Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal. Sullivan is an actor, journalist, producer, screenwriter, and author who's hosted a television program on Oprah Winfrey's network and written reports for The Washington Post and Rolling Stone. And, he's a White man. Way back when The C.O.W.S. was in middle of reading Jeffrey Toobin's The Run of His Life, Gus said that a master class on the Simpson trial would examine that case in context with the beating of Rodney King and the subsequent trial and rioting, the LAPD Rampart scandal, and the assassinations of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. The book club just concluded Geronimo Pratt's biography, which examines how the very same LAPD and Los Angeles district attorney's office conspired to keep an innocent black male caged for 25 years - where he could have easily been killed. Importantly, the former Black Panther and COINTELPRO victim Pratt was Shakur's godparent. Last week Sullivan explicitly demonstrated his disdain for black people and, likely, his dedication to White Supremacy by describing Christopher Wallace as a character out of a "minstrel show." The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Brian S. Bentley. A former LAPD officer, Mr. Bentley worked as an enforcement officer during the turbulent 1990's. He's written books about his experience and done multitudes of interviews over the years. The C.O.W.S. Book Club began our study of 1990's Los Angeles with the study of O.J. Simpson's 1995 double murder trial. Perhaps the most important trial in the history of U.S. jurisprudence, led us to examine the wrongful conviction of Geronimo Pratt, who sat in a California prison for more than 25 years. Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. worked the defense for both Simpson and Pratt, and earned a heap of scorn from Whites around the world. During the midst of all of this, formed LAPD officer Brian S. Bentley protected and served the citizens of Los Angeles. We'll discuss how the beating of Rodney King and the subsequent riots as well as the Mark Fuhrman tapes impacted police conduct and training. We'll also discuss the explosive revelations that followed Simpson acquittal, including the killing of black LAPD offcer Kevin Gaines by White officer Frank Lyga. Bentley reports that he worked with Gaines and rejects the "official" position that Gaines was a gang-banging, rogue cop who should have been killed. Importantly, Gaines was murdered 9 days after the execution of entertainer Christopher Wallace (Notorious B.I.G.) and two months after the murder of Ennis Cosby. Whites heaped scorn aplenty on the 83-year-old black male, decried this as another example of privileged black males trampling the rights of Women. Speaking of trampling, former Defense Secretary (two times) Donald Rumsfeld passed away this week at the age of 88.
