This episode is personal. It’s an introduction to me! People are often curious about why the heck a therapist would have a podcast, much less online courses and a social media presence? Ep 65Defense is Disconnection

Defensiveness keeps us disconnected from each other. We all get defensive. It’s just a human thing. It prevents us from being present in what is happening, and what another person is experiencing. It’s something we use as protection, because it’s hard to hear feedback sometimes. If we are defensive, we cannot connect. Whether it’s in a marriage, a friendship, or parenting, or any other kind of relationship, you’re always going to get feedback, and it can be uncomfortable. We’re not always going to agree with someone else’s perspective but being defensive can actually do long term damage to relationships. In order to connect, we must be open, which is vulnerable, and for some, scary, but the benefit of letting go of defensiveness is that we can be intentional in our relationships, and learn to digest feedback in a more functional way. Here are some tools that you can put in your toolbox when you feel defensive. Difficult topics are multiple conversations. Instead of thinking you can solve everything in one conversation, recognize that it may take more than one conversation. Wouldn’t you rather have many shorter more emotionally regulated conversations than one knockdown, drag out? Not every conversation has to end in a solution. Ask for a break if you need one Breathe. Keep your system calm. Being able to regulate yourself is key in not getting defensive. Focus on content, not delivery. For now. The delivery is a project for another time. We can get so wrapped up in like, “how can you talk to me like that?” or “how dare you treat me this way!” when underneath it all is vulnerability and a desire to connect better. So be open to hearing the feedback over the delivery. Be open to hearing the feedback without denying, justifying or blaming. It is not a competition. Ask some open-ended questions. We all really want to be connected, so it’s important to focus on the overarching purpose of the conversation, and be willing to come back to it again, because it’s not one conversation. So many times we can listen to or read some mental health tips and think about how those apply to people in our lives, but I would encourage all of us to just look inward as well. Look inward and continue to do your own work. ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 64Men's Mental Health Part 2

Let’s face it…Men do not always handle life or stress the same as women do, and it baffles us women to no end. How can we better communicate and connect with one another? What’s up with men? A lack of understanding leads to disconnection, so my aim with this topic is to help us understand each other better, so we can connect! In many man-woman dynamics, the deal is the same: issues cause one person (man?) to shut down and the other (woman?) ends up having to chase. Wait! There’s a better way. Want to learn how to have a productive argument? Listen Reflect Be patient This is explained in depth in the episode. One theme I hear from women a lot in the therapy office is the classic frustration with men’s need for a physical connection where women have more of a need for an emotional connection. The resistance around these differences are typically a result of our cultural conditioning. Women are conditioned to have an understanding that men want something from us, and men are conditioned to view women as wanting more emotional connection. But both kinds of connection are incredibly valid. We all need all of it. Another thing to be aware of is that men don’t always exhibit the same kinds of symptoms as women do around depression and anxiety. Men tend to internalize while women tend to externalize. Men often do not cry or emit emotion, men tend to get more angry and snappy rather than emotional, they lose interest in their work, family or usual activities, as well as are more likely to overuse alcohol and drugs. Men and women are very different and in order to connect we need to understand each other more deeply. We need to allow for difference. I think it’s beautiful that we’re not the same. We can learn a lot about different ways of handling emotion, and how to heal…together. We need to create an emotionally safe environment. Put away the judgement, impatience, confusion or frustration. Let’s hold each other accountable for doing personal growth work. ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 63Men and Mental Health

Today's episode is a CANDID conversation about men’s mental health. Although the majority of my listeners are women, I’ve gotten a request for this subject by multiple listeners. One in 10 men have reported dealing with mental health issues, but men’s mental health remains vastly under-reported. Men are far less likely to reach out for help and suicide rates are 3.5 times higher in men than in women. In this episode I will help you explore how to better understand the men in your life so you can have closer relationships. Invite your favorite man to listen to this podcast! Have a nice chat about it afterwards:) There are therapists out there that literally specialize in helping men. Let’s help end the stigma around mental health so we can be our best selves. ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 62The Most Important Connection

So many people are feeling disconnected these days. From their friends, their family…but most importantly from themselves. How can you tell when you are feeling disconnected from yourself? And how do you get reconnected? We can go through our life working, parenting, doing all of the things, and going on like everything is ok….all without realizing that we are not completely connected. The impact of being disconnected from ourselves is that we can be sad, angry, anxious, depressed, unmotivated, the list goes on! When we take the time and make the effort to get reconnected, Oh my! We can live in our lives and feel inspired, joyful, calm, and connected with ourselves and in our relationships. I’m a therapist, but I’m also a human. So I fall into the holes just like you do, my friend. Over the years, I’ve found some deep ways to reconnect with myself. My hope is that if you are feeling the current widespread societal disconnection, maybe some of these things can help you too? In this podcast episode, let’s try to get ourselves reconnected to, well, us. A few ideas are: · Grounding techniques · Breathwork and Nature · Visualization · Emotion generation Get all of the details and more by listening to the full episode ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 60How to Worry

There’s worry, and then there’s anxiety, and they are very different. Worry, also sometimes called pervasive thinking, is where we future trip, plan worst case scenarios and allow our brain to run our days in a negative way. Worry has us living in our heads. When we live in our heads, we are disconnected from ourselves and others. Worry causes all kinds of problems: it saps your energy, both emotionally and physically, causes insomnia & restlessness, and lots of times - it can lead to anxiety. When we worry, we are missing out on what is good in this world! Listen to today's episode for some great tips on how to keep worry in check: DON'T let worry send you down the path to more problems. Let’s discipline our brains, people! I’m here with you, doing the work. Ep 59The Comparison Game

Today I’m talking about something we ALL deal with at some level- whether it’s at work or at home. Comparison culture. We are conditioned to compare ourselves to others from the time we are kids. But we are full-fledged, card carrying grown-ups! You know what?! Comparison is OUT. Originality is IN. Let’s take comparison out of the equation so we can live the life we choose to live. Wouldn’t that be lovely? When we’re comparing ourselves to others, no matter what we have going on in our lives, we’re always going to be left coming up short. Yawn. So how do we get out of the comparison game? Today's episode will give you plenty of strategies. Whether its parenting, looking for a job, or whatever, we’ve got to stop all of the comparing, because it’s terrible for our mental health…and modeling it for our kids won’t help them either. We need to be our own best cheerleader, selling our amazing capabilities and unique skills. How does that sound for original?! ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 58Don't Panic

Don’t Panic A lot of people suffer with panic attacks. I’m discussing panic today because there’s a lot we can do to reduce and manage panic. In most cases, panic is amplified anxiety. It’s anxiety that’s been left untended. Sure, some people have panic attacks out of the blue. However, most of what we see in therapy is people with anxiety who can’t get a grip on the anxiety, and then they go into panic. Panic is a visible kind of fear. It affects people’s lives in a profound way. It’s terrifying. People have panic attacks sometimes end up in the ER, because it feels like something physical is wrong with your body. Not only that, panic attacks stop people from REALLY living. Panic attacks that go untreated can make it hard for people to do everyday things, like go to work, driving, shopping, having a social life, and the list goes on. But how do we deal with panic attacks? To do this we need to both reduce and manage the panic. First, we work on reduction, then we deal with symptoms when they arise. Today’s podcast will get into the nitty gritty of ways to do both of these steps! Stick with me to learn more. Today's episode will walk you through a process to reduce and manage panic The last thing I’m going to say for now is this. Bring it on. “Bring it on” is the mindset of somebody who doesn’t have panic attacks. That is also the mindset of healing. And healing is empowered action. Ep 57Everything is Temporary

Ever have those days (or weeks) when nothing goes as planned? Yep, me too! This is pretty much how life has been over the course of this pandemic. Hard. Unpredictable. Things feel like they will never be the same. This is how difficult times are sometimes… However, one thing that is really helpful to remember in times of trouble, is that everything is temporary. When we remember the temporary nature of things, it can help us get unstuck! Nothing is permanent. The brain has a tendency to get jammed up with our thoughts and feelings, and the idea of permanence feels real. Changing our perspective will create big shifts. If everything is temporary, then we can handle difficulty better! Game on! Here are a few ways we can open up to the temporary and ever-changing nature of life: · Willingness. Be willing to play around with the idea of permanence. Be in what you are in, in a willing way. · Mantra – reframing statements. Have a mantra or a little phrase you can repeat to yourself to tell your brain what’s up. Like, ‘everything is temporary’ or ‘this belongs here right now and won’t be like this forever.’ · Visioning something better. Our brain likes to know what’s going to happen in the future. So, sometimes it makes stuff up. If you’re stuck in your reframing, and you understand that everything is temporary in difficult times, creating a vision of something better might help. This is your life. You are incredibly resilient, incredibly strong, and you’ve gotten through a lot already. I know you have, and so have I. So envision something better, create some supportive statements to help yourself get there, and I’ll be here with you, doing the work. ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 56There is Nothing Wrong With You

Newsflash! There is nothing wrong with you! We live in a world that tells us that we’re not ok, and we can either ignore that, or we can confront it. We’re pathologizing ourselves. We’re so busy saying what’s wrong with us that we fail to see a pathway for solution. We’ve created a stigma, labeling ourselves because we don’t function the way that we think our society thinks we should function. Labeling ourselves as mental health diagnoses. I’m anxious. I’m depressed. I’m OCD. I’m bipolar. Today’s information will hopefully help you see past all of the labels…and know that you are going to be just fine, friend! We can find a better path to healing if we stop focusing on these labels and focus instead on a mindset shift. Today's episode will give you 3 tools that you can put in your toolbox to help you shift into a more empowered mindset. There is nothing wrong with you, my friend. Things are tough, but you can decide to move forward. Let’s just keep walking down the road of personal growth. Ep 54The Cell Phone Habit

Got a Cell Phone Habit? Yep, me too. I just returned from spending a week camping in the woods. No cellphones, no rings, no dings. Just enjoying nature. It was so nice. But it’s so hard to do that now that I’m back at home! These machines have us roped in. In this episode I am talking about why it might be beneficial to take a look at our cell phone habits, and exactly WHAT we can do to cut back. We will discuss why the cell phone habit is so damaging and how we can conquer it. The cell phone is a great tool and so many of us use it for personal and business reasons, but also so many of us use it for time wasting churn. So that’s what I’m going to focus on, using this thing as a tool and getting rid of the rest. I’ll be here with you, doing the work. Let me know how it goes. ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 53Dealing With Pandemia

Dealing with Pandemia Are you struggling to deal with all of the constant change and chaos in the world right now? Yes, lots of people are. In the mental health field, we are starting to see an increase in anxiety and depression. Uh-oh! Let’s not go down that rabbit hole…In this episode, I am dishing out some tactics to survive “Pandemia” without losing your mind. First, if you are suffering, I encourage you go and get some help! Even a few sessions could do wonders for your overall ability to deal with this situation. As I see it, there are a couple of major things happening right now with this pandemic and people’s overall mental health. One major theme I see is that people are feeling overstimulated. And then some are under-stimulated. Neither one of these things is good for our bodies and our brains. It’s emotional overload in every direction for a lot of people at one time. We don’t have any control over a lot of things that are happening except for how we deal with each day. So what can we do to take care of our mental health during this pandemic? · Mindfulness. Mindfulness teaches us about being in the moment. Being willing to just be in your life where you are right now. · Have a mantra. Something you say to yourself when you need a little pep talk. Like, it’s ok, I’m ok. That is literally my mantra. I will say it over and over again until I remember that it’s true. · Pay attention to your morning routine. The way we start the day matters and can be a setup for the way the whole thing goes. The way I see it, we are going to go through hard things and how we deal with it is everything. It matters. Even in times of struggle, there’s an opportunity for you to learn about your own capacity for coping, healing, and dealing with hard stuff. So, in the spirit of personal growth, continue to play around in your own life and see where you can effect some change. I’ll be here with you! ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 52Anger is Not The Answer

Do you ever get really angry and not know how to move forward? It is an easy place to get stuck! Anger is a “secondary emotion.” Anger is so many different emotions! Sometimes anger is protecting us from more difficult emotions. So let’s look at anger. What are the emotions underneath and how can we all deal with those? Being emotionally well-rounded means you understand that there’s not only one emotion at a time. It always comes back to US. The work we do on ourselves matters. Keep up the great work! ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 51One Year Later

This week marks my 1 year anniversary of doing this podcast. I have recorded 52 episodes, baby! I thought it would be fun to talk with you about how to reflect on your achievements and learn to move forward intentionally. It’s been a huge year of personal growth for me. Starting a project and keeping with it for an entire year is really an achievement! I feel like we are always so focused on the future and are really down on ourselves about the ways in which we didn’t reach our goals., myself included sometimes. I want to show you a process of personal growth inquiry that’s kind ,and growth centered, but also celebrates the win. I have received a lot of great feedback from people that they are finding it helpful, and I’m going to keep going. My mission has always been to help as many people as I can. Teaching people about their mental health and personal growth changes lives for the better. Remembering that mission is what has kept me going. Here are a few things that have helped me. These are also ideas to help YOU level up in your own life! · Pre work rituals. I try to do the same thing every time I sit down at my computer to record. I do a 5 minute mindfulness meditation, burn some sage so I have those nice smells, and let go of whatever negativity might be hanging around. Transitions are key for the brain- Having a little ritual, however silly it might be, helps to get our mind in a working space when used intentionally. · Consistency. We can ALL benefit so much from consistency. It’s crucial for so many things, whether it’s therapy, eating habits, drinking habits, or any kind of self-improvement we want to do. If we want to level up, we have to be consistent. Being consistent with this weekly podcast has even helped me create consistency in other areas as well! · Tenacity. Another thing I’ve really worked on this year is tenacity. That willingness to keep going even though sometimes I was tired or uninspired or thought no one cared. It payed off! Anytime we are trying to reach a goal, the smallest forward movements can be the most important key to success. No matter what was going on in my life, or how uninspired I was at times. I continued with a determination and tenacity that helped a lot. When you have a goal….just keep doing the very next tiny thing on the list. · Vulnerability. Any time we want to grow, we have to get uncomfortable. Building a new business is uncomfortable. It takes a lot of time and energy but my hope is that I’m going to help a lot of people, and I’m willing to push the envelope because of that. If I want to help more people I have to be really vulnerable and willing to show up, and deal with fear. Building a business is scary, but I refuse to life my life in fear. When you are trying to achieve you own goals- always keep your eyes peeled for FEAR. She’s a tricky one. She will talk you out of your best ideas! As for my intentions for the next year, I’ll be here doing what I do for the next year. I will make that commitment to you. Thanks for being here and being willing to look at yourself and do some self-work in your life. I really appreciate that. That is what’s going to move us all forward. Don’t you think? I mean, what if we all knew about boundaries, could communicate effectively and stopped letting our brains run our lives? That would be sweet! Want to dig in further? Ep 50A Little Pep Talk

Today, we all need a pep talk! Don’t you think? Things are really hard right now. This pandemic has been going for a few months, and we’re not done yet. We don’t know what’s going to happen next. This situation has thrown our lives into a tailspin, and our brains don’t like it. Here’s the deal: Your brain is set up to keep you alive. Safe. Change? The great unknown? Oh no, no, no. Brain doesn’t like it. A lot of how we’re feeling is because our brain is responding to what feels like a pretty unsafe situation. Our brains are very resistant to change and uncertainty. Our brains are like, “when are things going back to normal?” But there is no normal anymore. We have to create a new normal. Today, I want to tell you that you can get through this, and I can too. Here’s a few things that can help us all: · Take a break from media. Following every single detail about what’s happening is not helpful, so maybe take a little break. After that, monitor your news feed and your use of social media. Do you need to know every little thing or do you just need to know the big things? Maybe you could check every few days or just once a day. · Be present. Try to come into your life and what is actually happening. You may start to notice areas that need some change or growth and you can start to work on those things. If your kids are dysregulated, it is probably due to the lack of structure that frankly even some of us grown-ups are missing right now. So just know that’s a part of it. Be connected and present with the people in your life. And yourself…which brings me to the next point. · Are you taking good care of yourself? Are you saying nice things to you? Because you need to pep talk yourself through this thing. You’ve got this. In the end it will help if we can all keep things simple. Move out of the need to know what might or might not happen next, and come on into your life for a few days and see how that feels. And I know that some of you are like, oh, come on, Rebecca, it’s easier said than done. And yes, it is easier said than done. But it’s not that you can’t do it. Because here’s the thing. You can grow. You can be insightful. You can be present in your life and affect change. Bit by bit, you can be incredibly constructive. Take really good care of yourself this week. I’m here for you. ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 49It's Not About You

It’s very natural for us to take things personally. It’s normal brain behavior actually! Other people’s actions hurt our feelings sometimes. Other people’s behaviors and moods can really throw us off our game. Ever stayed up all night worrying about a conflict you had with someone? This is something that comes up a lot in therapy- so this week’s podcast episode goes on an in-depth exploration of why we take things so personally. And then of course, I will give you some tips on how to stay in your own lane. Because here’s the thing … IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU! When we stop taking everything so personally, we can live our own lives, we can get to know ourselves, and stop thinking so damn much. Doesn’t that sound nice? Self compassion and confidence are key here! Want to know how to stop taking things personally? It requires inquiry- be willing to stop and examine what’s going on: · What are your thoughts? Check for any assumptions you might be making about others. · Look for evidence of what you actually know to be true- what’s really happening that you can see and hear? Be objective. · Create a mantra – a phrase that simply reminds you to stay in your own life: “This is not about me.” Or “I don’t have to prove my worth to anyone.” Or my all time favorite mantra “I’m ok.” Other people’s thoughts are their business – it’s best to stop spending time there. Ep 47Self-Help Yourself: A How To

Therapists are regular people with regular problems. We fight with our families, get irritated about traffic and get down in the dumps. That’s just life. The fact is that almost everyone from time to time gets stuck in negative moods. If you are stuck in a rut, following some simple steps of inquiry can help you get unstuck. I will show you how. Self-inquiry is a powerful tool to help us remember our values, regain our composure, and carry on a bit more functionally. In this episode of the podcast, I am doing self-inquiry work around my utter confusion, anger and irritation during the COVID crisis…but you can use this technique on whatever you need to get unstuck from. The following questions will get you headed in the right direction and can be done in writing (preferred) or in your head. Out loud is another option if you like talking to yourself as much as I do. For the full (possibly TMI) version of this lesson, listen in as I work my way through a problem in my own life. I’m feeling much better after doing my own self helping. I hope it helps you too! ********* **Links and Resources** FREE DOWNLOAD- Break free from the grips of overthinking, manage stress effectively, and create a more fulfilling life for yourself. Ep 46Leave Relationships Like a Grownup

Sometimes, a relationship is just not a good fit. Friends, lovers and even family…. You get to choose who you allow to be a part of your life, and who you don’t. But how do you know when it’s time to leave a relationship? This is a question that comes up a lot in the therapy office, so let’s dig in! Here’s the deal. People stay in unhealthy relationships longer than they need to. People stay in boring, tired, worn out relationships too. People just tend to stick around in any old relationships when the thing is dead and gone. Why? Because breaking up is worse. In this episode I will help you assess whether (or not ) it's time to go- and how to do it! The bottom line: relationships are always a learning experience. We learn about what we want, and what we most definitely do NOT want, every step of the way. Keep walking, my friend! Ep 45Burnout Culture

We are living in an ever-increasing culture of burnout, and it’s time for change! What’s Burnout? It’s what happens when we are repeatedly stressed out emotionally and physically by work, our home life or our relationships. Burnout happens in every area of life. As a therapist, two of the most popular reasons people start working with me are unhappiness with jobs or discontent within relationships, and a lot of times this is because folks are totally burned out! In this episode, we will help you assess for burnout and give you lots of ways to get out of it! Personal growth work requires action.
