Regrets, Breast Implants

I am finally back. It has been a long year full of learning and I am excited to share it with you.To kick us off, as promised and promised, I finally gather the courage to express my feelings about plastic surgery and my sub fascial breast augmentation.I hope that what I learned can guide you if you are making a similar choice or battling some of the same questions in your head.I dive into my journey from perky boobs of my youth through nursing, losing volume, and wanting to feel more at home in my body again. The decision to get implants. The consults.And what happened after.The physical sensations. The complications. The exhaustion of holding something in your body that doesn’t feel right. The emotional weight of navigating that while raising kids, working, and moving through a divorce.About what happens when women make intimate decisions about their bodies inside systems that don’t always slow down, listen, or account for the full reality of our experience.And what it costs to override your own knowing. 258// Can Eroticism and Safety Co- Exist? With Jennifer Finlayson-Fife

Our favorite sex therapist is back and this time we are challenging the assumption that sexual desire dies with long term relationships. Felica interviews Dr. Finlayson-Fife and they dive into the challenges we face to "keep the fire alive".Esther Perel said " Eroticism is the antithesis to everything a healthy family life needs, ritual, routine and knowing. Safety and security. Eroticism is adventure" , in this episode we tease out the nuance in this and discover what eroticism TRULY means. Hint ** it isn't all about sex/ desire.We also touch on the fact that families are more child centered than ever with higher expectations for couples. All responsibility often falls on parents, not community, institutions or society. We set up play dates and take pictures of and talk about and invest in our kids yet our personal and couple relationships are left to shrivel up. How can we do better?We tackle all this and more! Don't miss this chance to bring more erotic energy into your life. 256 // Our Favorite Value Aligning Techniques for Intentional Parenting {Best of}

So often in parenting, we find ourselves...losing our cool, to put it nicely. We respond with anger; we use bribing or coercion to make our kids behave, and we hurt our relationship with our kids and ourselves in the process. In this episode, we take a deep dive into individual steps we can take anytime we find ourselves triggered by our kids’ behavior. We start with ourselves, pause, attune to our child, and then respond, not react, by setting limits and allowing logical consequences by looking at the need being expressed by our child’s behavior. This conversation will help you reframe difficult parenting situations and allow you to focus on the priority of your relationship. Take a pause to connect to your intuition when making decisions. Pay attention to what you fear and ask yourself why? Parenting helps us see ourselves more clearly. Don’t parent from a place of lack. 254// Creating Roots Through Family Traditions {Best Of}

The holiday season can feel overwhelming because we feel the need to do everything to make them exciting and special. However, the beauty of having our own families is that we can intentionally choose the holiday activities that serve us and let go of the ones that don’t. The magic of family traditions is that they help our children feel a sense of belonging and gives them roots, which helps them identify with the connection of the family instead of peer groups and can help with their behavior.In this episode, we share the traditions that serve us with simplicity and joy and give you many options to try with your own family. We talk about how sometimes all it takes is to recognize the traditions we already have and capitalize on naming them and making them reoccurring and special. From Halloween fun, ways to be grateful in November and loads of Christmas and winter traditions we hope that this episode inspires you to create new memories with your family and recognize your current traditions to turn them into magical ones that repeat every year! 253// Susan Stiffelman On Remaining Present in Parenting (BEST OF)

There is nothing quite like parenting--it’s something we want to desperately do well at, and it is simultaneously one of the most difficult things that many of us will ever do. We face fears, failure, triggers of our own emotions, often while experiencing physical and emotional fatigue. However, because of this, children have the capacity to be our greatest teachers. They allow us the opportunity to truly look inside of ourselves when we are triggered, and wake up to our own nature. In this episode, Felica had the incredible opportunity of discussing this topic with parenting expert and author, Susan Stiffelman, MFT. She explains how we can use the practice of being present to truly use this journey we have as parents to truly evolve ourselves as we face the daunting task of raising humans to do the same. Her books and her words are unbelievably inspiring and will help you as you navigate your own parenting experience. 252 // Habits Deep Dive / Why Simple Changes Compound into Big Results (Atomic Habits by James Clear) {Best Of}

It can appear like people who are successful at achieving their goals simply possess an incredible amount of self control. That kind of belief lets us off the hook from creating the life we really want--we simply lack the self discipline, right? Well, it turns out that as we create habits that add value to our lives, we actually require LESS self control, not more. As we change our environment and our cues and rewards, we have the power to eliminate negative habits and build positive ones that can transform our life. Habits are the key to making our goals a reality. We discuss the science behind habits and explore the work of experts on the subject. We break down the steps for creating a good habit (or ridding yourself of a bad one), and give you applicable tips that you can use right away in your life. We share what has really worked in our own lives as we have experimented with habits and unlocked the magic of things like habit stacking.Books that inspired us:Atomic Habits // James ClearDeep Work // Cal NewportEssentialism // Greg McKeownGetting Things Done // David AllenThe Power of Habit // Charles DuhiggOur Related Episodes:Habits for High PerformanceSystems and Values for Easier Days and Stronger Family ConnectionMake Your Morning Routine Happen!We would love for you to share our episode with your friends and family. 251 // Making It Easy to Do What Matters Most With Greg McKeown {Best of}

We often receive the message that we can have it all; we can do it all. Social media messages, societal expectations, and our own self talk often feeds the lie that we can do EVERYTHING. When we don’t live up to the unrealistic expectation that we can do everything and succeed at everything, there is a cost to our mental health. In this episode, we discuss this topic with New York Times best selling author, Greg McKeown. He helps identify the lie that we can do everything, and instead offers a path of wisdom, balance, and priorities instead of the wild racing that we often indulge in when we are trying to say yes to everything. He gives us very applicable steps on how to make doing what truly matters to us easy. 238// Unearthing Our Ego with The Enneagram

The Enneagram is a system of personality typing that describes patterns in how people interpret the world and manage their emotions. It unpacks the intention by with we interact with others and make the choices we make. In this episode we unpack our Enneagram types and discuss how they helped us unearth shadow sides of our egos that were limiting us or helped us see ourselves and our relationships in a new light. The Enneagram is a multi-faceted tool that can make us aware of who we are and how to work with our strengths and also help us determine weaknesses we may seek to change. In this episode, we use it to help us explore our own personalities and share how knowing ourselves has helped us capitalize on our strengths and understand and work with our weaknesses. So many of those years I would listen to Taralyn or Felicia talk about reframing and even enjoying the mundane tasks (like changing diapers) and to dos that normally are mindless. They talked about enjoying these things, creating connection in them. Every week I tuned in but honestly, I didn't believe it. I said things like, "I can't be that mom, that isn't working for MY children, these women are just UNICORNS. And every episode I would still plug in my headphones and listen along and wish I could get there, be that mom. Then something switched, last year I went on (my first ever) solo retreat to South America. It was a women's empowerment, yoga, surf trip but a switch flipped and I started doing the work on myself. I continued taking steps like FINALLY starting a miracle morning routine (for me!) and guess what? Things started clicking with my kids, and at home. So if you are able, start with yourself. I was convinced that to be a good mom I had to read all the parenting books, listen to all the podcasts, plan all the activities but that is so far from reality. Start with your Self! 236 // Systems and Values for Easier Days and Stronger Family Connections (Entitlement Trap by Linda Eyre and Richard Eyre) {Best of}

Have you ever driven in a city that isn’t well planned? The roads are often too narrow for the amount of traffic, and the flow of streets seem to have no discernible pattern. Navigating in such a place can be tricky and chaotic. In contrast, a city that has planned ahead of time what they want long term often has wide, orderly streets, and the initial time and thought investment pays back tenfold as their city runs much smoother as it grows. In this episode, we talk about using this theory of infrastructure in our own families. It takes some time upfront, but in the long run, it makes our family run sooo much more smoothly and makes parenting easier, while intentionally aligning it with our values.We discuss the systems that we have tried out in our own homes over the years that have proven themselves to be priceless.Books we mentioned:The Entitlement TrapSecrets of a Happy FamilyHold on to Your KidsMiracle MorningLinks We PromisedSerendipity Parenting Episode from Linda an Richard EyreRelated EpisodesDiscovering Your Life EssentialsHow To: Create Pockets of PeaceSponsor:GABB WIRELESSWe LOVE devices that help our kids stay safe and be able to adventure while still being able to contact us safely and allow us to know where they are without being the kind of technology that steals their mental health and attention. 231// Pt 2 Be the Calm Your Kids Need, Talking Less and Reducing Anger // Michaeleen Doucleff Hunter Gather Parent

Some parenting wisdom feels true to our core; that is how we felt when we read much of the wisdom from Hunter Gather Parent by Michaleen Doucleff. Today we are sharing our favorite nuggets from the book pertaining to disciplining our kids. The advice is less prescriptive and more in line with what we know to be true as parents and humans. Our children are learning. Our role is to see them with love and respect and teach them the ways of their family tribe. We tackle how to direct our kids with less force, create cooperation, and reduce the amount of anger in our homes. I started listening to you guys while I was in nursing school back in 2020. Your very first podcast on morning routines changed my life forever. I then purchased “Miracle Morning” and have lived by this since then. I wake up every morning, oil pull, set my diffusers, do yoga, sip on tea, and if I have time run with my dog (I even make sure to do this on my work days). Being a busy mom of 2 kids ages 7 and 4 that I partially homeschool (they’re also in a homeschool co op), wife, and a nurse, I can’t thank you ladies enough. Your podcasts help center myself as a parent. 230 // Pt 1: What Ancient Cultures Can Teach Us About the Lost Art of Raising Happy, Helpful Little Humans // Michaeleen Doucleff

"My kids never help", "It's like pulling teeth", "Our family life feels disconnected", "They don't care about me or what I do for them"; frustration over the lack of help in our homes from our children can send us into a spiral of hard days. The sentiment that "kids will be kids" and we need to cater to their whims can topple the structure of our families. In this episode, with the help of Hunter, Gather, Parent by Michaleen Doucleff, we are going to challenge the Western assumptions we all hold about parenting to bring a breath of fresh air and an ease to our parenting that just may revolutionize the way you think about your home environment! 229 // Applying Our Four Pillars: Connection, Being Present, Unconditional Love, & Healthy Boundaries

229 // Applying Our Four Pillars: Connection, Being Present, Unconditional Love, & Healthy BoundariesWhen we first started Find the Magic, we realized through research and experience that many of the strategies and ideas we found in books boiled down to four pillars: Connection, Being Present, Unconditional Love, & Healthy Boundaries. We labeled these pillars because they figuratively hold up the loving, kind, respectful homes we are striving to cultivate. We have found that if you are seeing behavioral issues with children or a lack of peace within yourself, these pillars can serve to help you recalibrate. I read all of Janet Lansbury’s books prior to my first daughter and told myself I can do this…then when my second was born (daughter had just turned 3), I started to fall apart. I found this podcast…and [went] down the amazing rabbit hole of this podcast. They dive into incredible topics, things I am thinking of, they read and discuss books I’ve read or are in my to-read list…I just cannot say enough good things about this podcast and these women. I listen while doing laundry, walking, making dinner…wherever I can. The mamas are like having coffee with best friends–they keep SO REAL. And during the pandemic–bless you girls. 225 // Becoming Embodied, How Authentically Feeling Can Heal Us: Exploring the Work of Gabor Mate and Susan Cain

Our bodies are intelligent. They are the home to our mind, spirit and psyche and are affected by our emotions whether we acknowledge them or not. Making the connection between our bodies and our emotions can lead us to a place of wellness and wholeness. This week we explore the mind body connection with the work of Dr. Gabor Mate (When the Body Says No). We also dive into how we can process those emotions and perhaps allow them to move through and heal us. Feeling pain is hard. There is no way around it. Oftentimes, we try to numb it or avoid it. We continue our conversation we started in episode 222 about negative emotions. How does the repression of negative emotions affect our bodies? We discuss grief and anguish and we wrestle with the concept of finding the balance in relationships between authenticity and attachment. Can we be true to ourselves and also have nurturing relationships? It’s a balance we all face. Here are some of the questions we discuss that may be contributing to a build up of unprocessed negative emotions in your life:1- In my life’s important areas, what am I not saying no to?2 - How does my inability to say no impact my life?3- What bodily signals am I overlooking?4 - What is the hidden story behind not saying no?5 - Where did I get these stories?Related episodes:222// HOW TO Make Room for Negative Emotions and Why Processing Anger is So Important From the Work of Susan Cain and Gabor MateStaying Open to The Present216 // What Resentment Reveals and Understanding EnvyHow to Process Jealousy and Resist the Gaping Pit of ComparisonBooks and Links We Mentioned: When the Body Says No: Exploring the Stress-Disease Connection // Gabor Mate, M.D.Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole // Susan CainKali Ma Meditation Felica Mentioned Sponsor:GABB WIRELESSWe LOVE devices that help our kids stay safe and be able to adventure while still being able to contact us safely and allow us to know where they are without being the kind of technology that steals their mental health and attention. 215// Why We Get Triggered by Our Kids (& How To Do Better) with Jen Lumanlan

Parenting is overwhelming and unpredictable. Even in the best of times we can find ourselves reacting instead of responding to our kid's big emotions or perceived disobedience. We know that we are in charge of our internal landscape but often that feels much easier said than executed. Today Felica chats with host of Your Parenting Mojo, Jen Lumanlan about how we can identify and tame our internal triggers to create healthier relationships with our kids. This work often involves delving into our personal BIG T or little t trauma as well as "trauma" that is less obvious; we discuss how we can work with these triggers and how to do so in a safe space. We walk through 13 common reasons our kids "don't listen" and strategies for navigating this as well! If you would like to dive deeper you can find the PDF HERE! 214 // Compassion: Where Love Meets Suffering and Remains Love

We all go through hard times. People we love experience hard things. What do we do when we are faced with the suffering of others? It can be easy to either push it away because it is too painful to see, or we can go the other way and fully immerse ourselves in a way that is more enmeshment than compassion.In this episode, Taralyn shares some personal experiences that have recently invited her to delve deep into what it means to be compassionate. She uses the work of Brene Brown, Kristin Neff, and Chris Germer to define what compassion is, what it is not, and how to use the power of true compassion to love people in the middle of their suffering.Related episodes:Parenting with Unconditional Love 179 // Do You Want a House Full of Kind Kids this Summer?
