Ep 352EP 241: BPD & Substance Abuse Disorder - Emily ’Fraulein’
EBPD & Substance Abuse Disorder - Emily 'Fraulein' Borderline Personality Disorder (or BPD) is an emotional regulation disorder characterized by impulsivity, self-harm, instability, and often heavy substance abuse. After a life crisis in 2019, Fraulein was admitted to the psychiatric hospital, where she was diagnosed with this misunderstood and heavily stigmatized disorder. In the years since, she has found healing through specialized therapy, sobriety, and most importantly - self-compassion. In this episode, she dives into the symptomatic overlap between BPD and substance abuse disorder, describes the comorbidity between the two, and takes us through a practical exercise used in DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy)- a powerful tool to help us conquer impulsivity and take a stand against bad choices. Ep 351EP 240: Hatred of Sound and Movement? - King13 Interviews MMC13
ESomething strange started to happen to MMC13 in her pre-teen years; the whole world suddenly became a barrage on her senses; sounds were too loud, sights were overwhelming, and there seemed to be no reason for it. The condition led her to isolation and misery through much of her teenage and young adult life, and likely played a part in her early drinking as a coping mechanism. Fast-forward 20 years, and the condition(s) finally have names! Misophonia and Misokinesia, which literally translate to mean 'hatred of sound', and 'hatred of movement'. Join us as she explains what these conditions are, how they affected her, and why she believes they're much more common than we realize. Ep 349EP 238: Peggi Cooney Author of ”The Other Side of Alcohol”
EPeggi Coney Author of "The Other Side of Alcohol" Peggy did not have a drinking problem until her 50's. Having it all, a beautiful family, two homes and also a dream job teaching social work. In 2008, Peggi received a service award amongst seventeen hundred and fifty colleagues and still could not put the drink down. A drinking incident at a reunion family picnic resulted in her daughter saying "if she wanted a relationship with her family she needed to address this problem". Peggy was crushed as she valued her family more than she could bear to lose them. Author of The Other Side Of Alcohol, she takes you through her journey and how she turned her life around. I want the stigma and shame gone, everybody has a valid story and deserves to be heard. It brings us to where we are today. Peggi says "you need to constantly forgive yourself". Ep 347EP 236: SoberSeedling’s Recovery Story
ESoberSeedling was a good Christian, conservative, straight A student who at a young age was addicted to perfectionism. She attended a Christian College, became a Middle School theatre teacher, still performs today as a singer and works for a brewing company. After a failed marriage, she simultaneously falls apart and blossoms. Unhealthy relationship patterning leads to domestic violence, as she continues attempting to “fix or save” her partners, while neglecting herself. Her self worth is crushed and her 'identity' questioned, ultimately feeding a growing addiction to alcohol. Her story is one of hope and resilience. A huge empath, she holds space for everyone and is practicing doing the same for herself. The way she expresses and writes with such honesty will certainly help other victims of domestic violence before it could be too late. And please if you think this may be you, see professional help and pour the poison down the sink. Ep 346EP 235: MMC13’s Recovery Story
EMMC13 remembers thinking at the early age of twenty that she may have an issue with alcohol. Adopted to a loving couple she recalls a normal childhood until her teenage years presented challenges being bullied so she starting drinking to "fit in" like so many teenagers do. Diagnosed with Misophobia & Misokinesia (hatred of certain sounds & movements), MMC explains her high sensitivity. She works her sobriety and accumulates seven and a half years. Her passion for seven family furries and 'rescues' and we both agree that giving back in community fills our souls. Thoughts of moderation pass through and she finds herself at that pivotal moment when it's you or alcohol. Only ONE will win. A fascinating listen where I learnt so much. Thank you MM13. On a personal note.. I lost my friend Karl yesterday and dedicate this podcast to him and his beautiful partner Debbie & his children Cody and Tahlia. See you on the other side mate💚. EFinding your balance again- Polly and Corinna ride the train with a cuppa and talk about Corinna's recent meditation retreat and what she learned about herself to help bring her back in balance and refocus. Sobertown is a growing community of like-minded people in recovery helping others start or maintain their sobriety. We refer to ourselves as “Sober Warriors” because the fight against addiction is a grisly battle that takes no prisoners. Real people die every day from complications and repercussions of long-term alcohol use, a tragic end that is 100% preventable through increased awareness and connection. Alcohol is so pervasive and normalized in our culture that it often gets a free pass into our lives when it’s really a cancer-causing drug that can slowly wreak havoc on all states of our well-being: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational, and intellectual. But we’re not here simply to shine a light on alcohol’s ugly side. We’re forming a village of sober individuals from all walks of life that share a common goal - to support others in recovery while also increasing the dialogue around the many positive aspects of sobriety versus the darkness of addiction. Ep 328EP 216: How Do You Help Someone Stop Drinking Before it’s Too Late? What if It’s You?
EBoom Rethink the Drink, Yesterday I had a chance to talk with my friend Drifter for his Sober Town Podcast. It was International Women's Day so we had planned to talk about the toxicity of alcohol marketing directed at women, but after a couple of days of multiple postings in our communities on the deadly result of alcohol addiction, we decided instead to focus on the questions of "how do you stop drinking before it goes too far?" - "how do you help someone you love who seems lost to the bottle?" Drifter and I have both lost brothers to their addictions and we have both found solid dry ground after breaking out of our addictions. Do we have the answers to these questions with the years of personal experience we both have as the addicted and the loved one of the addict? We came up with two answers by the end of our talk and those answers were all about beacons and light houses. My beacons that guided me to stop drinking and stay sober were young and old and somewhere in between. We all grew up with the basic premise that handling our liquor was a badge of courage in cultures and families that celebrate drinking hard and handling it. Cultures and families that laugh at hangovers, distrust sobriety, celebrates the drug and shame the addict. All of us started drinking as a right of passage from childhood into adulthood. Some of us waited until we came of age and some of us started drinking younger but in one way or another we were mimicking the behavior of the adults that we knew. Maybe we admired their ability to function highly, to handle their booze, or maybe we said we’d never drink like they did, but drink we did because that is what adults do. Those adults were our beacons and we followed where they led us. It makes perfect sense that to find another path beacons of a different sort are needed. And it makes perfect sense that those of us who have fought our way out of addiction after helplessly watching loved ones die- chose to be lighthouses -- join us for our conversation and find the links to the communities and articles we discuss in the Boozemusings post below. No matter what your choice with the most common addictions they will only temporarily also fill the void and numb the pain. Ep 320EP 208: Men and Sobriety - Ft. A-Rod and DadLife
EMen and Sobriety. A-Rod and DadLife join King13 and they agree that sobriety is not gender specific and a lot of alcohol use disorder comes from childhood and trauma. We hide our emotions, why when our bodies are naturally reacting to our emotions. We are told to resist expressing emotions. Stored emotions reveal themselves in sobriety and whilst painful to work through it should not kill you. We have to eliminate the 'stigma' of men having to be strong and not expressive. Ep 319EP 207: Peanut Interviews Tami @ WagonCoffee Roasters, LLC
EPeanut5280 had a chance this week to sit down with Tami Canaday the Founder/Owner of Wagon Coffee Roasters, LLC https://wagoncoffeeroasters.com/. They specialize in COFFEE FOR ADDICTION RECOVERY *Support Women In Recovery from Addiction *Support Farmer's Livelihood Through Our Ethically Sourced Beans *Support Clean Energy Through Our Zero-Emissions Roaster. Tami with Wagon Coffee Roasters LLC aligns with her husband Ryan and FREE - A Spiritual Community for Addicts, Loved Ones of Addicts, and Spiritual Refugees https://freespiritualcommunity.com/. Tami, Owner/Founder of Wagon Coffee, identifies as a Recovery Advocate and Loved One of an Addict. Her husband, Ryan, is 8+ years sober. She has witnessed the beautiful transformation of recovery through him and within their marriage. In 2018, Ryan and Tami launched a nonprofit called FREE—for Addicts, loved ones of Addicts, and spiritual refugees. They create space for healing, recovery, and spiritual connection. Because of FREE, Tami learned more about women in recovery, their stories, the alarming and increasing addiction stats, and the hardships they face as WOMEN in recovery; 5.7% of women have a substance use disorder in the United States. She also discovered some staggering COVID-19 statistics...according to a Journal of American Medical Report (JAMA) report Women, in particular, exhibited a 41% increase in alcohol consumption over a 2019 baseline. Tami decided to do something, in the midst of a pandemic, to help women in recovery. And it just so happens [ironically enough] that 90% of recovering addicts and alcoholics drink coffee! Wagon Coffee was founded in 2020 by Tami Canaday in response to the critical need for assistance for those afflicted with alcohol and drug addiction. So, along comes wagon coffee...Why “Wagon”?! It comes from the century old saying, when you are sober, you are “on the wagon”. They are “being the wagon” by guiding women in recovery towards wholeness by providing second chances through employment, encouragement, & empowerment. Together Ryan and Tami are immersed in the process of offering healing, wholeness, inclusivity, & sustainability. Join them in being part of the solution. Ep 318EP 206: Neuroplasticity Discovery in Recovery: Boom Rethink the Drink
EJoin Wingy and Drifter as they talk: Neuroplasticity and the Discovery in Recovery - Open Your Mind to the Possibilities Neuroplasticity has fascinated me since I read Marc Lewis’ book The Biology of Desire when I was 8 months sober. It was the last of many books that I read that year on the topic of addiction and recovery. One of the interesting things about Marc’s book was that unlike the other books I had been reading it did not help me stop drinking, or inspire me to stay sober, but rather explained the awesome, unexpected growth that I was experiencing in recovery. It explained why my recovery felt quite a bit more like an adventure than a chore. Not recovery – discovery! The Biology of Desire examines how our brains can evolve and change if we break the isolation of addiction by reaching out creatively to evolve. It offers positive reflections of the experience that people can have by connecting with generosity of spirit rather than retreating in resentment when they stop using drugs and alcohol to numb out. As I read the book, rather than imagining the possibility of what Marc was describing, I recognized my experience in his words. I responded YES! That is exactly what’s happening right now! My brain was growing and evolving as I wrote my way sober in a creative community, and Marc explained why through the science of neuroplasticity. Ep 311EP 199: They’re Marketing Us - Boom Rethink the Drink
EWingy from "Boom Rethink the Drink" and Drifter sit down to chat about the marketing of alcohol before Super Bowl Sunday. Super Bowl Sunday is one of the biggest challenges of the year for people who have recently stopped drinking. Alcohol will likely be a big feature of any Super Bowl party and if your friends don’t know you’ve gone sober you may find yourself in an uncomfortable spot, deciding how much information to give or not about why you’re partying alcohol-free. It’s also a challenge that alcohol is a big feature of the Super Bowl itself in those much-anticipated commercials that may be triggering to the most determined newly sober person. The commercialization of addictive behavior is something that I blog about often. I have written post after post on the toxic mainstream media marketing of wine o’clock and mommy’s wine time. One of the most toxic cultural trends of my adult life has been the sale of this lifestyle as consequence-free. It’s packaged beautifully and artfully sold, everywhere from the grocery store to your television screen to your social media feed to the cinema, the idea that the problem is not the drink but the drinker becomes deeply ingrained in our subconscious. Join us for a pregame discussion on the marketing of alcohol and ideas on how to enjoy Super Bowl Sunday Alcohol-free - Rethink the Drink. Ep 303EP 191: Downsizing and living minimally - Positive Recovery with Corinna
EWhen we get sober we start to question many things. The meaning of our life, where we are and how we got here. Is it free choice. It or it due to convention, society, expectations and conforming? For me, it was all of the above. And I drank to drown my sorrows. Now I’m sober, live unconventionally and am the happiest I’ve ever been. I am now living the life I love. But why? As Glennon Doyle would say “Here I am” Remember, you always have a choice. It is all within your control. It’s inside your hula hoop. Yay!
