Ep 403EP 292: Drink - Author Ann Dowsett Johnston

E

Host: Viv aka Sober_iThrive Guest: Ann Dowsett Johnston I am an award-winning journalist and bestselling author, turned psychotherapist. For more than 25 years, I worked at Maclean’s magazine, Canada’s newsweekly, where I was perhaps best known as the chief architect of the Maclean’s university rankings—and for a series of columns on modern life, including “The Boy Can’t Sleep,” anthologized in Carol Shields’ Dropped Threads II. Drink book by Ann Dowsett Johnston Winner of seven National Magazine Awards, I am also the recipient of a Southam Journalism Fellowship and the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy. It was for the latter that I prepared a 14-part series on Women and Alcohol in the Toronto Star, looking at the closing gender gap on risky drinking. In 2013, I wrote Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol, a book named one of the top 10 of the year by the Washington Post. Part memoir, part journalistic exploration, the book exposes the “pinking” of the alcohol industry. Says Gabor Mate: “The writing is gripping and vivid, the voice personal, the research exacting, the stories revealing if sometimes heartbreaking, the conclusions essential. A triumphant life, a triumphant book.” ‍ Since the publication of Drink, I have worked hard to destigmatize mental health and addiction, earning an honorary Doctor of Laws from Queen’s University for my efforts. I am also the recipient of a Transforming Lives award from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), the American Research Society on Addiction’s Media Award, plus the T. A. Sweet Award from the Ontario Psychiatric Association for helping address stigma related to mental health and addiction. ‍ In 2017, I decided to follow my heart, applying to the Master’s of Social Work program at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. What this represents is the fulfillment of a decades-old dream: to become a psychotherapist. During my internships, I worked at the Jean Tweed Centre in Toronto, and with psychotherapist Jan Winhall at Focusing on Borden.Writing remains a significant part of my life, and I am hard at work on my second book. In my spare time, I am a white-water reader, a lover of nature, and a traveller. I am the mother of one grown son, Nicholas Johnston, also a psychotherapist, who is married and lives in Los Angeles. https://www.anndowsettjohnston.com/workshops https://www.anndowsettjohnston.com/about-ann Other Sober Resources: I Am Sober App Getting Sober ...Again Boom Rethink The Drink Recovery Movie Meet-Ups No Sippy No Slippy. Ep 399EP 288: Irish Exit - Interview with Author Meg Star

E

Ready to quit drinking but not sure where to start? Don't want to go to AA? Think you can quit on your own? You can! Cold Turkey. You are a gray area drinker who can take back control of your life and stop drinking before big problems arise. You know alcohol is not serving you and has become a problem. Your life will be more fulfilling, happier and peaceful without alcohol dragging you down. Megan Collard lives on the Jersey shore with her family and goldendoodle, (sometimes referred to as her favorite daughter), Penny. She runs a small, real estate company with her husband and is raising 4 school-aged kids. Megan was a “gray area” drinker--a regular drinker who became a heavier, problem drinker overtime but was very much functioning in all ways. Megan did not use a traditional method to stop drinking--she woke up one day and decided she was tired of how alcohol was making her feel. She knew it was keeping her from living her best life so she quit; cold turkey (as the saying goes). Megan has been alcohol free for over two and a half years. She is an active member of her “I Am Sober” app group and the “Sobertown Facebook” group. You can also listen to Meg Stars Recovery Story, just click the link below. Ep 396EP 285: Runningandyoga’s Recovery story

E

Runningandyoga sat down with Viv to tell her amazing Recovery Story! Runningandyoga grew up in East Germany with an understanding that she would never be able to travel the world, choose her professional career, or speak her thoughts freely. Yet, in November of 1989, when she was 12 years old, everything changed over night. The Berlin Wall came down and with that her country dissolved. Simultaneously her parents got divorced, she faced unwanted changes of her body, (puberty), and in school nobody knew what to teach and who should teach it. Longing for stability in her life, she started to control food and her weight. Later she discovered alcohol as a way to cope with anxiety, depression, and everything else. After failed attempts to moderate her alcohol consumption, she fearfully and begrudgingly tried sobriety in January 2022. She is forever grateful that she found community and support in the I Am Sober online community. E

Molly is 34 has been sober for over 2 years but drank heavily (and almost lethally) for nearly a decade. If her depression and suicidal thoughts weren’t going to kill her, a drunk driving accident would’ve. She ran away from the trauma of sexual assault and domestic abuse with alcohol before realizing she deserved the hard work of healing and loving herself. Now newly married and determined to craft a thriving, healthy future for her family and future children, like all of us she is figuring out how to care for herself sober, not compromise her core values, but also bend a little and be soft enough to stay a compassionate partner and wife. Ep 393EP 282: Author Peg O’Connor - Higher and Friendly Powers: Transforming Addiction and Suffering

E

Viv, aka Sober iThrive interviews Dr Peg O'Connor on her book "Higher and Friendly Powers" This is an amazing interview and we graciously thank Dr O'Connor for coming on the Sobertown Podcast and sharing her amazing insights and wisdom!! Interview with Peg O'Connor, Professor of Philosophy, Specializing in Feminist, Social, Political Philosophy and Addiction Studies, and Author of: “HIGHER AND FRIENDLY POWERS TRANSFORMING ADDICTION AND SUFFERING HIGHER” An expansive alternative for those who have AND FRIENDiv struggled with the "higher power" of AA's 12-step POWERS program, Higher and Friendly Powers (Wildhouse Publications / August 24, 2022) offers a sense of human decency, moral ideals, and even a better version of oneself. In Higher and Friendly Powers, Peg O'Connor, PEG O CONNOR PhD, addresses an audience much like herself: those in recovery who have struggled with the Christian-centric God at the heart of Alcoholics Anonymous. She brings our attention to a little-known fact: the term "higher power," a touchstone in the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, was coined by William James, philosopher, psychologist, and intellectual giant of the early 20 century. By acting as our personal field guide through the world of William James, Peg shows that "higher power" as James conceived it is far more expansive than we might imagine. The book, which combines Peg's deep personal wisdom with James's adventurous intellect, has the power to transform the way we live. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: 1 Peg O'Connor, Ph.D., is a Professor of Philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. • Her training is in moral philosophy, feminist philosophy, addiction studies, and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. She believes that philosophy helped her to get and remain sober. Avoiding Alcoholics Anonymous for the first 20 years of her sobriety because of the concept of a "higher power," she is focused on using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She further shares this in her new book, Higher and Friendly Powers: Transforming Addiction and Suffering (Wildhouse Publications, August 2022). Dr. O'Connor is also the author of Life on the Rocks: Finding Meaning in Addiction and Recovery (Central Recovery Press, 2016), Morality and Our Complicated Form of Life: Feminist Wittgensteinian Metaethics (Penn State, 2008), and Oppression and Responsibility: A Wittgensteinian Approach to Social Practices and Moral Theory (Penn State, 2002). A co-editor to multiple other titles, she is regularly published in trade journals and writes a column, Philosophy Stirred, Not Shaken, for Psychology Today, which has nearly two million total views online and select columns have appeared in the print publication. Dr. O'Connor's expertise has been featured on BBC's Free Thinking and Canadian Public Radio's On Drugs podcast, as well as in print and online publications ranging from The New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Cosmo and Marie Claire to Vice and Kinfolk. She has been invited to present on addiction and recovery at some of the country's most prestige universities, in addition to workshops and talks in church basements, classrooms, community centers, and treatment centers. Dr. Peg O'Connor is a recovering alcoholic who maintains that philosophy got and helped her to stay sober. For the last twelve years, she has shifted the focus of her work to using some of the great canonical thinkers in western philosophy to illuminate dimensions of addiction. She understands addiction as a meaning of life problem and no discipline is as well suited as philosophy to address meaning of life questions. Ep 380EP 269: Rehab Barbie Creator Claire Comai sits with Polly

E

Polly sits with Claire Comai who developed a wonderful sober resource, Rehabbarbie.com where she takes her passion for fashion in a direction that makes her proud of her sobriety and celebrates recovery. Removing the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction and helping show how proud we are of our recovery. Who We Are Rehab Barbie is a brand born from REAL people and their REAL journeys of recovery from addiction and mental illness. Our aim is to create a collection that celebrates and inspires recovery in others. Our Story Rehab Barbie is founded on the principal that dealing with mental illness and addiction is not something to be ashamed of. Like any other disease or condition that effects humankind, these illnesses are a product of disordered function in our body. In those who suffer from heart disease, diabetes or cancer, the disease attacks the body's heart, pancreas or cells. In mental illness and addiction, the disease attacks the brain. Yet, a cloud of stigma and shame often surrounding diseases like addiction, depression, schizophrenia, PTSD, bipolar disorder and eating disorders, often leaving those who suffer from them unable or unwilling to seek out treatments that could save their lives. Our brand is about shedding the anonymity and speaking out against the stigma. Recovery is something to celebrated, not kept secret. We’re here to commemorate everyone who has ever struggled and won against these diseases and to inspire and support those still sick, still suffering and STILL fighting. Whatever your journey may be, wherever you are in it, we hope you’ll share it with us. Ep 376EP 265: Experience, muscle memory and habits - Positive Recovery with Corinna

E

Experience, muscle memory and habits Positive Recovery with Corinna Everything happens for a reason and our experiences make us who we are today. Our coping strategies from these experiences become part of out muscle memory and we form habits which can be like a default switch. Some are helpful, others not so. We may think alcohol is wonderful and helps us through life, but eventually we come to realize this actually does us far more harm than good. Ep 374EP 263: Walking Back to Happiness, The Secret To Alcohol-Free Living & Well-Being

E

Corinna sits with Nigel Jones to talk about his book and sobriety and have an absolutely amazing conversation!! "Aimed at millions of drinkers around the world who are interested in taking a break from alcohol, WALKING BACK TO HAPPINESS reveals the secret of how drinkers can free themselves from alcohol's control. Where the standard willpower method fails, this unique and easy-to-follow approach is proven to succeed. It shows how by quitting drinking you can transform your body, mind, life and find true happiness. The story of how a 50-something-year-old, who had been locked into the habit of drinking alcohol for over 35 years, finally woke up and said, "I want a different life"; how he found his purpose and in doing so transformed his mind and body; how he lost 30% of his body weight and made anxiety and sleepless nights a thing of the past. You don’t have to be an alcoholic to stop drinking. You just need to recognise that your relationship with alcohol can lead to life-changing issues – not just for you but for your loved ones, your work colleagues, in fact, everyone you are connected to. In WALKING BACK TO HAPPINESS, the author shares ALL the obstacles he faced, the wisdom he gained and the challenges he overcame during the first year of going alcohol-free. Set out in six sections: Time To Act - Day 1; The Journey Begins - The First Few Days; Discovering The New You - The First Few Weeks; Understanding The New You - The First Few Months; The New You - Beyond 90 Days; A New Life - One Year & Beyond. The book will help you: Identify your values; Cement your beliefs; Find your purpose; Reduce your anxiety; Lose weight; Improve your well-being; Discover the power of mindfulness & meditation; Be more present; Unleash your alcohol-free superpower; and Transform your mind & body". Each chapter covers: The Author’s Story; What He Learnt; Steps You Can Take; and Key Learning Summaries. “Nigel’s story is a brilliant example of how you can transform your health and happiness starting with one simple change - taking a break from alcohol. Absolute must read, this is not only a wonderful story of transformation, it is a fantastic self-help, health and happiness book rolled into one. THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!” Andy Ramage, World’s No. 1 Alcohol-free Self Development Coach “Nigel spells out chapter by chapter how to navigate the pathway of alcohol-free living. Ep 372EP 261: Doug aka Saddle Tramp’s Recovery Story

E

My name is Doug, aka saddle_tramp on the IAS app. Not my first rodeo, got exposed to AA and the concepts of recovery as a child of 21 in the USAF overseas. Stayed clean and sober 3 weeks that time. Many moons later, crawled back into AA, and discovered the concept of online recovery in the form of sober24.com, a most magical and wonderful place and time. At this writing, I haven't had a drink since August 31, 2001, haven't smoked weed alcoholically since 9/9/2019, and haven't had a cigarette since last November. Today, I owe my sobriety to a few local AA groups(Psychic Change in Auburn, Washington, the Edmonds Group, and Thursday Night Spiritual in Everett), my recovery circle at the Everett Recovery Cafe, the IAS app, and the kids from the app that started the whole zoom deal to supplement their recovery outside of the app. I appreciate having the opportunity to be of service to the community here, and to meet so many of you as we trudge the sober trails together! Ep 371EP 260: Culturally Diverse Community and their Experiences with Addiction

E

Rai, Raul and Viv Sober_I_Thrive As we discuss “getting sober” in a Multi Cultural Diverse Community and how breaking our limiting beliefs within our cultural barriers of Addiction ❤️‍🩹 Recovery, could have stopped us from getting sober. The making of “Sobersquad” as told by Raulito, who is one of the founding fathers and the Terrible 😢 Anxiety that plagued Rai to join the one and only Zoom at the time and why it took me so long to integrate myself on Zoom and my own personal cultural biases. If you FEAR joining zooms this podcast is for YOU, we shared with so much vulnerability in hopes to reach out to those of you that feel alone, scared 😱 and FEAR WHAT OTHERS Rai was born in Guam where both her parents were heavy drinkers, then moving stateside, she confesses that she has felt alone most of her life, but through sobriety she has grown into herself, finding her voice within her sober found family, She now strives to be as open and present as possible so that others may not feel as alone as she once did and is breaking the generational cycle of alcoholism within her own family with her son, Currently at age thirty she has 20 months of sobriety and hopes one day to become a published author. My name is Raul aka Lil Raulito and I’m humbled by my strides in recovery. I didn’t think I would ever be able to break away from my addiction yet here I sit a couple of weeks from hitting the 1000 day mark. The reason I remain connected with our tribe is to give back what was freely given to me. I want to be a representative of my Higher Power and share my message of strength and hope. I can’t do this alone and I stay connected with the fellowship to stay sober. Sometimes the fellowship lifts me up and at other times I’m part of helping others. I’m blessed to have found community and I’m grateful to be part of this community. Host: Viv aka Sober_iThrive Guest: Ashlee aka AshlsHere About our Guest: Ashlee aka AshIsHere Ashlee's childhood and early twenties were an overall happy time that set a solid foundation for adulthood. She had a small taste of life's unpredictability in those formative years but was able to persevere with the support of her loved ones. Once she graduated college and began working full-time as a special education teacher, her drinking increased as all the social activities she was engaging in involved alcohol. A couple of life-altering events would send her into a tailspin in her late twenties. Although Ashlee had a wonderful upbringing, she lacked the social-emotional skills required to navigate through these stressful scenarios. Not knowing where to turn, her drinking habits became increasingly problematic. Ep 364EP 253: Mary HummingbirdsAppitite’s Recovery Story

E

Mary AKA HummingbirdsAppetite tells her Story to Viv AKA "Sober I Thrive" Mary AKA HummingbirdsAppetite tells the story of her journey from addiction to recovery. Suffering from childhood panic attacks and mental compulsions due to OCD led Mary to discovering self harm, alcohol, and drugs as coping mechanisms at a young age. She learned to put on a high functioning mask by earning good grades and maintaining the status quo. She has endured multiple tragedies throughout her life including the death of her parents, her beloved sister as well as friends and loved ones which pushed her further into her addictions. After seeing how the negative behaviors that she was exhibiting were manifesting in her young daughter, Mary began to understand the error of her ways. She fought through her grief, guilt and shame to educate herself about addiction and build a sobriety toolbox for herself to end the cycle of addiction in her family. This research brought her to IAS where she has crafted her own recovery program and, through inspiration from Sobertown, has become committed to giving back to the community with her graphic design expertise. Mary has become a huge part of the Sobertown village and is helping us create more resources on the back end of the Sobertownpodcast.com website. JOHN DILLON is recognized for his work as producer and co-host (along with his wife Vivian Nesbitt) of Art of the Song a one-hour program about songwriting and creativity heard across America on over 100 public radio stations. His book The 20-20 Creativity Solution gives readers a step-by-step process to enhance their creativity. As a luthier, John has built over 80 custom guitars for the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Trisha Yearwood, the Mavericks and Steve Earle. His current project is HOPE ROAD - from Addiction to Recovery, an album of 12 songs that chronicle John’s journey from being a carefree traveling hippie in the ‘60s to serious cocaine and alcohol addiction in the ‘80s. John recalls a ‘divine intervention’ in the form of a run-in with the law. His true recovery journey began at an addiction treatment center in 1992. Subsequent songs on the album show how John has maintained sobriety and spiritual growth through gratitude, service and commitment to a 12-step program. John lives on a farm in upstate New York with his wife Vivian, her mother, two dogs, two horses and lots of guitars. John and his wife are going on 30 years of Recovery!! Ep 355EP 244: David’s Recovery Story

E

David is 37 years sober& King13 was curious how! David begins talking about the last night he took a drink, he was thirty six and a regular bar drinker. He remembers taking his first drink at sixteen and thinking he liked it so he would try it again. Over the years his drinking progressed. At first David attending AA Meetings and he was not convinced about the 12 steps and the higher power. However realizing he needed to stop one day after two months of meetings he found his obsession for alcohol lifted and yet he had no logical explanation why. He did work the 12 steps, has never had a slip and considers himself recovered from the cravings and has accepted he is wired differently. He said "when he picks up alcohol it is like rolling the dice" and if you can no longer drink safely, you have a problem. Today no longer an introvert, he is a friend amongst friends and recommends that you do the work in front of you. We do not have to do this alone. This is not a solo sport and a recovery world of friends await. Thank you David.
