Ep 108Intermittent Fasting v. The "30-30-30" Protocol: Which is better?
The 30-30-30 Protocol—developed by Tim Ferriss and popularized by Gary Brecka—is an approach to nutrition that requires you to: 1. Consume 30 grams of protein2. Within 30 minutes of waking3. After which you perform 30 minutes of exerciseThis method is starkly different from intermittent fasting, in which you to abstain (typically during the morning hours) from eating anything at all. Which method is better? With which have you had more success? In this episode, a very shiny and muscular James Flood and I offer our two cents.Email me and let me know which works better for [email protected] YouTube link: https://youtu.be/WjdO6DdZfkkIf you're Interested in bespoke 1:1 coaching, but prefer someone more approachable than your typical trainer, start here ➡️ https://forms.gle/n1q3rpMYi8YhqQ9y6.I’m excited to embark on this journey together!Friendly Disclaimer: I sincerely hope that you enjoy this show, but please take care of yourself and consult a health professional when needed. A sauna can be immensely beneficial to your overall wellbeing: It boosts cardiovascular health, enhances recovery, deepens sleep, and supports detoxification. But there’s a common misunderstanding about its power to help you lose WEIGHT, of which you should be disabused. Does sweating in the sauna = weight loss? Ep 107Nutrient timing: It's not only what, but WHEN you eat that matters
The nutrients with which you fuel up and recover are important, but so too is the time of day at which you consume them. The term for this is, simply enough, “Nutrient Timing”. In this episode, my pal James Flood explains the basics of “Nutrient Timing”, including: The post-workout feeding window: what to eat, what to avoid, and when. The difference between fast and slow digesting carbs, and when each should be consumed. When protein should be consumedAnd more! Ep 106The untold PERILS of Protein Powder
Are protein powders detrimental to your health? 🤔Recently published studies have revealed significant amounts of heavy metals (namely cadmium and lead) to be hiding in them. The highest concentrations were found in: 1. Chocolate flavored powders2. Plant-based powdersMy good pal James Flood offers his take on the issue. Ep 105The MILL and the WATER: A meditation on memory, futility, and FLOW
“The mill cannot grind with the water that has passed”. In this episode, we’ll meditate on an old proverb that addresses the difficulty of: 1. Letting go of the past2. And focusing, instead, on the present. I wonder…Where is your energy directed? Is it concentrated on the PAST–a deep pool of regret into which it impotently drains? Or is it concentrated on the PRESENT? Ep 104The drain snake of the SOUL
Imagine using a "sink snake", or a drain clog remover, to clean your mind of negative thoughts. With what kinds of thoughts and emotions is it currently filled? Were you easily able to dislodge and dispose of them? What thoughts and emotions remain stuck? Have you ever had a “gut feeling” about something? What about “butterflies in your stomach”? Have you ever had them? It turns out, the GUT is much more than a grumbling, bottomless repository for food; Inextricably linked to the BRAIN, the gut plays a vital role in the regulation of your emotions, moods, and stress. William Morris (1834-1896) was an English poet, designer, and political reformer. He developed a simple philosophy for “keeping house”: Keep nothing in your house that you do not Know to be USEFULBelieve to be BEAUTIFUL If your possessions are neither useful nor beautiful, dispose of them. Abide by this easy philosophy, and enjoy the bliss of an uncluttered, clean, and peaceful living space! Ep 94Don't Live An IMAGINARY Life In The Mind of Others
“We do not content ourselves with the life we have in ourselves and in our own being; we desire to live an imaginary life in the mind of others…” Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician, inventor, and philosopher, came to this realization about humankind in the 17th century. It remains as true today as it was back then. In this episode, we discuss living an “imaginary life” in the mind of others, as opposed to embracing our real existence in the pursuit of truth. Ep 93Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad | Fall Asleep With Me
Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski) was a Polish-English novelist. He was born in 1857 and died in 1924. His twenty years spent as a sailor in the British merchant navy inspired many of his literary works, among which Heart of Darkness is most highly acclaimed. In this episode of “Fall Asleep with Me”, I read this work’s opening scene. It takes place on the tranquil waters of the River Thames. Ep 92A Reflection on FRIENDS & Remembrance of Things PAST
The inspiration for this episode is a sonnet–a Shakespearean sonnet–with which you’re unlikely to be familiar; Sonnet 30, you see, isn’t commonly ranked among Shakespeare’s finest works. It’s neither read to romantic lovers, inscribed on elegant tombstones, nor quoted in popular films. Indeed, you’ll very seldom hear a recitation of its fourteen forgotten lines. And yet, to our purposes, my dear friend, I think it’s ideally suited. I hope that you enjoy this meditation on loss, regret, remorse, failure, and–that by which all sadness in life is wiped away–friends. Do me the honor, my dear friend, of “liking” this episode, subscribing to this channel for daily doses of mindfulness, and sharing it with a friend.
Ep 91A Meditation For A RAINY Day: Tracing The “History Of A Single Raindrop”
“How interesting (it is) to trace the history of a single raindrop!” In this guided meditation, we’ll join the American outdoorsman, conservationist, and writer John Muir as we contemplate the dramatic life story of a single raindrop. Muir was a man of extraordinary depth. In this episode, we’ll accompany him to lofty poetic heights–high, in fact, as the craggy summits atop which he made his home–before following him and his raindrop down to the oceans, rivers, puddles, and flower cups in which they came to rest.I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing I enjoy better than watching the rain fall. It’s a divine spectacle of nature, a beautiful production of sound and movement than which there’s simply none more wondrous in all the world. Hopefully this mediation enhances what is, quite without my meager contribution, a transcendent experience. If I succeed, please give this episode a “thumbs-up” or a “five-star” rating. Share it with friends, colleagues, and loved ones. Return to it any time you’re stuck inside on a rainy day. And subscribe to this channel! You can now watch this episode on my YouTube channel. Just search, “Pneuma by Daniel Finneran” and immerse yourself in the stunning images. With affection,Daniel
Ep 90Four Quartets by TS Eliot | The Great Poems Of All Time
Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888 - 1965) was an Anglo-American poet. A devout Christian, Eliot was an important figure in the Modernist movement that sprang to life in the first quarter of the 20th century."Four Quartets", a uniquely sublime work by which all his other poems are eclipsed, addresses the theme of time. It's a theme on which, as you doubtless know, so many of our meditations here on Pneuma are based. I think that you'll enjoy it. Subscribe, like, leave a five-star rating, and share this with friends. Send me poem recommendations at [email protected] you! Ep 89“Footfalls Echo In The Memory”: How To Think About And Deal With REGRET
Footfalls echo in the memoryDown the passage which we did not takeToward the door we never openedInto the rose-garden.This is an excerpt from the first poem of TS Eliot’s masterpiece, “Four Quartets”. It is, in my opinion, the most memorable part of “Burnt Norton”.In this episode, we’re going to meditate on the theme that Eliot presents: Regret. Be sure to listen to my prior episode about remorse. What is the one thing you regret most? If you care to divulge, send me an email at [email protected] or comment below. Be sure to visit my sister project, @finneranswake on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. I think you’ll really enjoy it; Finneran’s Wake is where I have deep, probing, provocative conversations with a multitude of extraordinary people from all walks of life. -Daniel
Ep 88Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë | Fall Asleep With Me
Charlotte Brontë (nom de plume "Currer Bell") was an English novelist. She lived between 1816 - 1855. She was the eldest (and most gifted) of an immensely talented trio of sisters, which included Emily and Anne. Her most famous work, “Jane Eyre” is also one of the finest in the English language. In this episode of “Fall Asleep With Me”, I read one of my favorite scenes: that in which our eponymous heroine, Jane Eyre, encounters the dashing Mr. Rochester in the garden at dusk. Please consider subscribing to this channel for more sleep stories, meditations, and soothing content! Visit my YouTube page @pneumabydanielfinneranAnd my sister project @finneranswakeThank you.
Ep 87How to Think About and Deal with REMORSE, The “Poison Of Life”
“Dread remorse when you are tempted to err, Miss Eyre; remorse is the poison of life.”In Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 masterpiece, “Jane Eyre”, Mr. Rochester issues this stark warning to young Jane, the novel’s titular character and heroine. In this episode, we’ll focus on remorse, contrast it with regret, and implement techniques to relieve us of its heavy burden. I ask you, dear friend and listener, which of the two do you think is worse: Remorse? Or regret? Share your thoughts in the comments section below, or send me an email at [email protected] If you do, I’ll dedicate an entire episode to your thoughts. Be sure to visit my sister project, @finneranswake on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. I think you’ll really enjoy it; Finneran's Wake is where I have deep, probing, provocative conversations with a multitude of extraordinary people from all walks of life. -Daniel
Ep 86Alternate Nostril Breathing: Simple and SOOTHING (Tutorial and Practice for BEGINNERS)
Join me for an Alternate Nostril Breathing Session! This simple breathing technique, to which I commit a few minutes every single day, is deceptively powerful. Not only does it invigorate me with fresh oxygen and vital energy, but it helps to balance my body–the left side with the right. This episode is a simple tutorial to which anyone can follow along. If you like this content, be sure to subscribe to the channel! If you really want to stimulate your mind, check out my sister channel, @finneranswake, on which I hold conversations with a variety of interesting guests.
Ep 85Middlemarch by George Eliot | Fall Asleep With Me
George Eliot (the manly nom de plume behind which Mary Ann Evans cloaked her true identity) was an English novelist. She lived between 1819-1880.Her most famous work, “Middlemarch” is also one of the finest in the English language. In this episode of “Fall Asleep With Me”, I read one of my favorite scenes: that in which Will Ladislaw and Dorothea Casaubon (finally) express their love—in word and deed. Please consider subscribing to this channel for more sleep stories and soothing content! Thank you.
Ep 84What If You Had to Relive Each Moment Of Your Life Again And Again (Forever?)
What if you had to live your life not only once, but innumerable times over? Would this be a blessing? A curse? Would you delight in the opportunity to live it again? Or, if you haven't lived such a good life thus far, would you bewail the prospect? In his work, "The Gay Science", Friedrich Nietzsche explores this idea. He does so through his doctrine of "Eternal Recurrence", of which the Pre-Socratic philosopher, Heraclitus, is acknowledged to have been the originator. In this meditation, we take up the doctrine of Eternal Recurrence and think about it deeply. Please send your comments to [email protected] affection,Daniel
Ep 83Hidden Inside Each One of Us Is An Unimaginable “I”. Where Is Yours?
The concept of the Unimaginable “I” is one to which, so far as I can tell, the Czech-French writer, Milan Kundera, is chiefly responsible for having given life. Kundera, twice expelled from the Czech Communist Party (of which he was, in his youth, a devout member) published a book in 1984 entitled The Unbearable Lightness of Being, about which I talk, at some length, on my sister channel, Finneran’s Wake (Check it out on Podcast/YouTube!) In the book, Kundera contemplates the idea of the Unimaginable “I”, to which today’s episode is dedicated. If you find this content different and stimulating, enlightening and soothing, do consider giving it a “thumbs-up” or a five-star rating. Be sure to share it with friends and family and subscribe to this channel. With affection,Daniel

And yet…We’ve unlearned this simple technique (for which a remedial lesson is urgently needed!)Together, let’s relearn how to breathe properly. Ep 80We’ve Surpassed 50k Downloads! And It's All Thanks to YOU!
Since its inception in Autumn of 2022, Pneuma has accumulated 50,000 downloads (almost exclusively on Spotify)!I just want to take this opportunity to THANK everyone for supporting this channel and for helping our community grow. Behind every number is a person, a deeply complex and unique human being, to whom I extend my sincerest gratitude. It’s my goal for Pneuma to become the FIRST (and perhaps only!) place you visit when in need of a soothing voice and a thoughtful word. A soothing voice and a thoughtful word: To you, dear friend and listener, I’ll never fail to deliver these things. Affectionately yours,Daniel
Ep 79How To MASTER Your EMOTIONS! (It's Easier Than You Think!)
Are you ready? Here’s the secret: Gaining mastery over your emotions is as simple as replacing one word with another. When angry, do you say: “I am angry”? Try this: the next time that you’re visited by the emotion of anger, simply substitute the word “feel” for “am”. “I feel angry” is much different from “I am angry”. Feelings are fleeting. They are visitors to which you can either open or close your door. Being is a bit more permanent. Once you perceive your emotions as visitors, you can gain control over their coming and going. I hope this meditation is helpful! If so, please subscribe to this channel and share this episode with an (overly emotional!) friend.Be sure to check out my other channel, Finneran’s Wake, on which I host profoundly insightful and endlessly edifying conversations. With affection,Daniel

I’ll lead you through my own grounding practice, to which I religiously commit a few minutes every single day, no matter the weather. This is my “Advanced” grounding practice. I’ll be sure to create an episode with which novices might have an easier time.Do consider joining Pneuma’s growing community! Ep 77A SUPER SLEEPY Countdown From 100 To 0 To Help You Fall Asleep (More Effective Than Counting Sheep!)
The title, I think, says it all! In this video (over whose script I toiled for weeks!), I count down from 100 to 0 in a super SLEEPY tone of voice. My prediction is that you won’t make it past 75. When you wake up, be sure to comment below with the last number you remember hearing. I’m curious to know if there’s a soporific “sweet-spot” at which everyone falls asleep. Please consider subscribing to this channel and sharing it with family and friends. Ep 76Savor the Season: Learn How To Live In The HERE And NOW!
Through winter-time we call on spring,And through the spring on summer call,And when abounding hedges ringDeclare that winter’s best of all…–WB YeatsIs it not the case that we’re incessantly looking ahead to the future? That we very seldom stop and appreciate the season in which we’re living? That we live not in the present moment, in the sacred “here and now”, but in the distant times and places to which our hopes and fears drag us? No more! In this episode, we’ll discuss how to live in the “here and now”! Borrowing from the wisdom of the Irish poet, William Butler Yeats and the American Transcendentalist, Henry David Thoreau, we’ll learn how to “live in each season as it passes”. We’ll learn how to be fully present and immersed in the Now. Tell me: Do YOU live in each season as it passes? Or are you constantly yearning for a cooler, or warmer, or more festive time of year? Ep 75A DEVIL’S Response to HAMLET’S Big Question: “To Be Or Not To Be”?
In a previous episode, we meditated over a question than which, in my opinion, there simply is none bigger, more profound, nor more important: “TO BE, OR NOT TO BE”. (Or, in other words: to keep on living, or to give up and die). This is the famously quotable line with which Act III of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” opens. Hamlet, the troubled Prince of Denmark does what he does best: he dithers. I suppose, ultimately, he decides NOT to be (a decision for which nearly everyone close to him suffers). In “Paradise Lost”, the great epic written by John Milton, an unlikely proponent of the “TO BE” position, Belial (one of Satan’s fellow demons!) comes forth and answers Hamlet. He says, in short: “To be no more; sad cure; for who would lose, Though full of pain, this intellectual being”? Join in this fascinating meditation as we explore a devil’s “pro-life” response to Shakespeare’s Hamlet! Ep 74Where The Wild Things Are | Fall ASLEEP With Me
zzzzZZZZzzzz😴😴😴Hello everyone! Welcome to this episode of “Fall Asleep With Me”.In this series, I read classic bedtime stories to which you can (and most assuredly WILL) fall asleep. Tonight’s episode is a sleepy, dream-inducing reading of “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak. For what it’s worth…I’m not so sure the mischievous, misbehaving, wolf-boy Max is totally deserving of the hot supper (served to him in his bedroom, mind you!) to which he returns, but it’s a fantastic story regardless. I think you'll enjoy it. Tell me in the comments below: should Max have returned home to his hot supper? Should he have gone to bed hungry? Should he have stayed with the Wild Things? Please subscribe to this channel for many more sleepy bedtime stories and soothing meditations to which the whole family can listen along.
Ep 73“You Don’t Know What You’ve Got Till It’s GONE”: How Deprivation Sharpens Our Idea of Value
Don’t it always seem to goThat you don’t know what you’ve gotTill it’s gone…The legendary Joni Mitchell (to whom the Counting Crows don’t hold a candle!) said it best: “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”. GK Chesterton, the great English essayist, cultural critic, and Christian apologist of the early 20th-century wrote something very similar in his article, “On Being Moved”. In it, he said: “For it is the point of all deprivation that it (deprivation) sharpens the idea of value”. The joined and timeless wisdom of Mitchell and Chesterton will be the focus of today's meditation. Use it to cultivate a sense of gratitude, to expand your consciousness, to calm your nerves, and to reflect on the objects–be they little or big–that you possess, but seldom appreciate. I hope that you enjoy this episode. Ep 71Nourishment For The Body and Soul: Getting to the MARROW of Life
The marrow–be it of a bone or of a book–is the deepest, healthiest, most sought-after thing that we can nourish ourselves with. It is the hidden flake of gold, the buried piece of diamond for which we all dig–than which every lustrous rock and special stone is far less valuable. In this episode, we draw our inspiration from the great French Renaissance writer, François Rabelais. In his immortal book, “Gargantua”, Rabelais compares a dog (crowned by Plato as the animal kingdom’s most “philosophical” creature) who is in hungry pursuit of bone marrow, and a human’s attempt to get at the marrow of wisdom. The aim, in both cases, is to get to the marrow of life–for the nourishment not only of the body, but of the soul as well. What do you think? Do you like bone marrow? Comment with your opinions below! Or send me an email directly at [email protected] sure to “like” this episode and to share it with a loved one and friend. Ep 70A Meditation on Life's BIGGEST Question: “To be, or not to be?”
“To be, or not to be, that is the question…”Verily, ‘tis a line quotable not only by every English-speaker, but most non-English-speakers who are scattered across the world. And while it deserves, and shall forever deserve, our quotation, it no less demands our contemplation. I’m convinced that this line, and the entire passage of which it’s the opening and defining part, is more than mere poetry, scribbled out by a short-lived bibulous bard at the end of the sixteenth century.No.It is, in no exaggerated terms, life’s BIGGEST question–a profound idea over which we’d do well to meditate for a little while. For the next half hour, that’s precisely what we’ll do. Tell me, dear friend: how would YOU respond to Hamlet’s question? What would you advise him to do? What would YOU do? Comment below or send me an email at [email protected]. If you do, I’ll read your responses in a forthcoming episode. Ep 65Sailing to Byzantium by WB Yeats | The Great Poems Of All Time
William Butler (WB) Yeats (1865 - 1939) was an Irish poet, dramatist, writer, and statesman. A poet to whom I was introduced at the tender age of twelve, Yeats has continued to inhabit a special place in my heart. His finest work, in my opinion, is "Sailing to Byzantium". After the collapse of Rome in the fifth century AD, the center of European culture shifted east to the Golden Horn. Renamed "Constantinople" after the famed Christian Emperor, Byzantium was, to Yeats, the spiritual homeland to which, in a modern world overcome by materialism, he yearned to return. The tone of the poem, at its beginning, is wistful: Yeats, now an old man, feels like a stranger in both his time and place. The world around him abounds in flesh, sensuality, youth, and lust. It is, as he says, "no country for old men". No. The country in which he belongs, for which he pines, and to which, by way of his poetry, he'll take us, is that of the spirit. Ep 64A Celebration Of The Sun: Gratitude For Our Great Star Above
Thomas Traherne (1636-74) was an English poet, writer, theologian, and Anglican cleric to whom I was recently introduced. His only extant work, Centuries of Meditations, completely swept me away. It’s a short but powerful book with which you should spend an afternoon. In this episode, we’ll focus on a couple of passages from Traherne’s Meditations. In them, he lists the countless gifts that the sun bestows upon us every single day–of which we’re almost always unmindful, and for which we’re hardly ever grateful. You can use this episode to think about and appreciate nature or, if drowsy, to help you fall asleep. Please give this channel a 5-star rating. Like it! Leave a comment. Ep 63A Simple 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise | On The Beach
The 4-7-8 breathing exercise, of which the great Dr. Andrew Weil is widely-acknowledged to be the inventor, is simple and effective. You need only do the following: inhale for 4 seconds; hold the breath for 7 seconds; and exhale for 8 seconds. That constitutes one cycle. You'll then repeat this sequence for a total of four cycles. Perform this at least twice a day. A little "behind the scenes": this episode, which was completely unscripted, was recorded while I was sitting on the beach. Sadly, I was a bit too far away from the shoreline to capture the calming music of the waves. Instead, I got a background full of the clamorous din of a jet plane flying up above! For that, I offer you my sincerest apology. I hope, nevertheless, you enjoy this episode. Send comments and criticisms to [email protected] my sister project, finneranswake.com and the "Finneran's Wake" YouTube channel and podcast.
Ep 62If-- by Rudyard Kipling | The Great Poems Of All Time
Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English poet, journalist, and author of short stories. An unbending defender of the British imperial project, his reputation has suffered in recent years. Many of his detractors today echo the judgment rendered by George Orwell, who called him, in positively venomous terms, a morally insensitive, aesthetically disgusting, brutal, sadistic, jingo imperialist. Well then! Despite Orwell's unflattering assessment of his near contemporary, Kipling's finest poem, "If--", is one you'll want to commit to memory. It's a brief, beautiful work that you can memorize in but a few weeks' time. Untarnished by politics, inspirational from its first word till its last, "If--" is, without a doubt, one of the great poems of all time. Ep 61A Quick, Calming Breathing Meditation At The Beach
The title says it all! After a peaceful morning spent reading on the beach, I took a few minutes to absorb all the natural beauty, tranquility, picturesqueness, and happiness that surrounded me. Join me and interrupt your day with the gentle sound of waves rolling on the beach, wind blowing through the trees, laughter dancing in the air, music echoing in every direction, and--the least euphonious of the aforementioned--my calming voice leading you through a simple breathing exercise.
