Set Lusting Bruce = Dave Kratzke, writer, publisher & Springsteen fan

Dave Kratzke and I connected via Jay Armstrong. He was working with Jay's new book Ordinary Hero, (which is phenomenal by the way) Dave's own book, "It's OK to not eat your peas" is also a lot of fun. Dave has been a Springsteen fan since the early 80s, and has been lucky enough to see him 30-plus times over the years. We had a wonderful time and I can't wait for Dave to join me again sometime. S3 Ep 45Rock is Lit: ‘Tonechaser’ Chronicles Part 2: Music Journalist Steve Rosen Talks About His Friendship With Eddie Van Halen

Thanks for joining me for Part 2 of my in-depth interview with music journalist Steve Rosen on his decades-long friendship with Eddie Van Halen, which culminated in Steve’s 2022 book, ‘Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen’. The third edition of the book is coming soon, but you can preorder your copy now at tonechaserbook.com. For more information on Steve Rosen and the Van Halen Fiction Challenge I offered all you Lit Listeners who, like me, are jonesing to get your hands on some novels or short stories or graphic novels featuring the band, check out Part 1 of Episode 45, or email me at [email protected]. I can’t wait to see what you come up with, and if I wind up devoting an episode to Van Halen fiction that you suggested, I’ll give you a shout out in the episode. Back to Steve Rosen: In Part 1, Steve and I talked about the genesis of his friendship with Eddie Van Halen, Eddie’s background as a kid immigrating from the Netherlands to America and his devotion to and respect for his father and brother, the idolatry Eddie’s fans feel for him, and the seeds that eventually sprouted into Steve’s book ‘Tonechaser’. In Part 2, get ready to learn more about Steve’s complicated relationship with Eddie, including the dark turn it took in the early 2000s and how Eddie’s 2020 death still haunts Steve. You’ll also hear about Eddie’s marriage to Valerie Bertinelli and his love for their son, Wolfgang. Finally, Steve shares juicy stories about his journalistic career beyond his work with Van Halen, such as his tumultuous experience interviewing John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin in 1977. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Jim Morrison: Brilliant or Buffoon?

E

The Doors were one of the most influential and iconic bands of the 1960s – they built a dark counterculture sound on a foundation of Ray Manzarek’s organ playing that combined elements of poetry, blues, rock and roll, jazz, and psychedelic music. At the front of it all was their charismatic, volatile, and enigmatic lead singer Jim Morrison. There’s no doubt that he was the embodiment of the whole sex, drugs, and rock and roll thing. The good looking frontman who helped forge his legacy by dying young. But was Jim Morrison a brilliant visionary or a rock and roll buffoon? On one hand, he saw himself as the Lizard King. A poet and mystic who was influenced by his background in literature and film. On the other hand, Jim was also an erratic, self-indulgent showman. A hardcore alcoholic who clashed with his parents, his bandmates, and most famously, the police. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at the life and legacy of Jim Morrison and debating if he was brilliant or a buffoon? No Filler: Whatcha Heard: The Heaven and Hell Edition

E

Look, we'll be the first ones to admit it: we listen to a lot of shoegaze and dream pop on this podcast. And you'll get plenty of that on this episode. But you'll also get children's songs written by a beloved 90s alt-rocker, an aggressive blues-harmonica, and some epic 70s jazz-fusion from a group of musicians that used to pal around with Miles Davis. Only on No Filler will you experience that level of musical whiplash! Tune in for our monthly mixtape episode for January. Imbalanced History: Billboard's Chart Run Champions

E

We looked into an article on Louder Sound that talked about the longest runs on the Billboard album chart. That chart started as a Top 10 in the 1950s, expanding through to 1967 when it became the Billboard 200! That's name most of us know. This adventure just might include the most artists not previously profiled in one of our episodes: Lana Del Rey, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Adele. Add chart champs of the '50s (Johnny Mathis, My Fair Lady OST), and this is a different musical journey. There's even a little controversy about Pink Floyd's "Dark Side" run (solved by the Research Team), and a ton more to discover. To add contrast the Boys also discuss the record-setting chart runs versus album sales. So many artist who have sold massive numbers, but didn't have a record-setter: The Eagles, Garth Brooks (both twice), AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles! Two things: -We are excited to be part of the party on 2/10/24 as Crooked Eye Brewing in Hatboro, PA marks 10 years of fun & brews with a huge party at the brewery featuring The Crooked Eye Band!!! We will be there, recording for a special episode marking their 10th, and our 5th in March!!! -Punk Rock Month '24 is in the works...stay tuned for more about a kickass April! E

We're back this week with our long-awaited Best of 2023 episode and there's a lot for you to wrap your ears around. In a time that many seem all-too-thrilled to declare the death of a genre, there was an increasing number of great albums and songs released in 2023. Plenty of new material from veteran artists was released in 2023 including albums by The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Overkill, Dokken, Halestorm, Prong, Metallica, Metal Church, Extreme among others. Lots of newer bands were forging their own path last year with new music such as Rock City Machine Co, Ravenstine, Seven Ravens, Iron Void, Crown Lands, Fortune Child and more. Other notable releases for 2023 including music from Marvelous 3, Wolfgang Van Halen, and Halestorm. Did any of these albums make our lists? You'll have to listen to find out. Chris and Aaron each count down their Top 10 releases from the year that was 2023. We hope you enjoy and share YOUR choices in the comments! Ugly American Werewolf in London - KISS - KISS (The Debut Album)

KISS is one of the most legendary bands in the history of rock n roll. From their iconic makeup to their bombastic stage shows to the marketing and licensing of every product under the sun, KISS has been a part of popular culture for half a century. The self-titled debut album, KISS, didn't grab everyone's attention out of the gate, however. While they had some killer riffs supplied by original guitarist Ace Frehley, some funky bass from Gene Simmons, swinging drumming from Peter Criss and superstar vocals from Paul Stanley, the band were still forming their sound and identity. In fact, the sales of the album were so slow that Casablanca Records chief Neil Bogart cajoled the band into recording a 50s cover, Kissin Time, which he thought would help boost sales as a single. Even though Kissin Time was added to every copy of KISS after the first 100,000 or so, it didn't help generate more sales. But their reputation as a great live band had KISS winning fans around the nation. And while KISS wouldn't capture that live sound until ALIVE! a couple of years later, this album has some great tracks which are still KISS classics today like Deuce, Strutter, Cold Gin and Black Diamond. We give it our usual track x track evaluation and throw in lots of KISS tidbits. As a special bonus, we have included a clip from Space Ace himself, Ace Frehley. As Ace recently spoke with Paul Stephenson of VRP Rocks (a good friend of Ugly American Werewolf in London), Paul asked Ace a question from The Wolf about the timing of his new solo release 10,000 Volts and how it's coming out almost 50 years to the day from the release of KISS. Ace may not answer the question we asked but it's amazing that Paul asked if for us and the audio is included somewhere in the episode - you'll have to listen to hear from Ace!! Shout It Out Loudcast: "Dynasty

E

This week Tom & Zeus review the 1979 polarizing KISS album, "Dynasty." This was KISS' 7th studio album and the 21st KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Dynasty was the first studio album since Love Gun in 1977. This was the longest time between studio albums for KISS. It was the last studio to feature all original members until Psycho Circus in 1998. The album was produced by Vini Poncia, who Peter Criss demanded and had previously produced Peter's 1978 solo album. The band was definitely changing. Super KISS had been formed. The band wore flashier outfits with capes and became more comic book-like. They experimented with more pop and yes, even disco, with their huge international smash, "I Was Made For Lovin' You, written with this new upcoming songwriter, Desmond Child. Producer Vini Poncia was instrumental in this new sound, however the band did write some of their best songs, like the brilliant, "Sure Know Something." Yes brilliant! However, this departure in sound and style alienated a lot of the KISS Army. The album also featured all four members sing at least on song, just as they did on Love Gun. However, this album featured Ace Frehley on three songs, by far his most. Gene Simmons only sang on only two. The album also featured ghost player, Anton Fig on drums. Peter Criss only played drums on his song, "Dirty Livin'." The album cover was the iconic photo of the four faces of the band. The inside photo of the band in black also became legendary. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. So tune in to another must listen to SIOL album review. S3 Ep 45Rock is Lit: ‘Tonechaser’ Chronicles Part 1: Music Journalist Steve Rosen Talks About His Friendship With Eddie Van Halen

Welcome to Part 1 of Episode 45, featuring Steve Rosen. Steve is a highly respected music journalist and author of more than 1,000 articles and seven books, delving into the lives of iconic figures like Jeff Beck, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, and Black Sabbath. His latest endeavor, ‘Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen’, was published in 2022. The book offers an intimate perspective on the guitar virtuoso and Steve’s friendship with him from 1977 to 2003. In the introduction to the book, Steve writes, “What you will read here is not a biography, a history, or an exacting chronology. You won’t find discussions about tapping, taping, or touring. There are no in-depth analyses of album releases or his profound and absolute rewriting of the entire canon of electric guitar playing. . . . Rather think of this as a memory journal, a chronicle filled with observations, illuminations, and interpretations and what the hell does that mean? It means telling you about what I saw—the observing—shedding some first-hand light on what I was seeing—the illuminating—and trying to explain and decipher what I was witnessing—the interpreting” (XVII). Join us for the first part of my in-depth interview with Steve, then listen to Part 2. Ep 113See Hear Podcast Episode 113 - Interview with Denny Tedesco, director of Immediate Family and The Wrecking Crew

Back at episode 110 of See Hear, Tim, Kerry and I had a round table discussion (Broadway Danny Rose style) about Denny Tedesco's 2015 documentary, The Wrecking Crew. That film was about the session musicians of the 1960s LA scene that made the “name” performers sound great. These session musicians were not known by name outside of that community until their achievements were lauded decades later. What happens in the 1970s when the next generation of LA musicians want to have the ability to play with lot of different artists AND have the joy of being part of a BAND rather than just being part of a pool? You get Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel and Russ Kunkel rewriting the rules. Welcome to episode 113 of See Hear Podcast. Unlike the members of the Wrecking Crew who were originally trained as jazz musicians, and fell into rock and roll to earn a living, the new generation of musicians had grown with rock and roll, loved The Beatles, and wanted to play with songwriters that they admired – as well as contribute to their arrangements. They had the best of both worlds – freedom to play with different people, but still feel part of a gang. Director Denny Tedesco has created a wonderful follow-up to his Wrecking Crew film with the new doc, Immediate Family. For the last few years, they've been playing as a band under that name, but for years, they were playing (together and separately) for hundreds of songwriters / performers including James Taylor, John Prine, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Linda Ronstadt, Gene Clark, Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Phil Collins, and many many more. Their “employers” were also their friends who valued these gents' creative input, not just the ability to knock off a song under tight record company and studio requirements. Once again, Denny has produced an absorbing film about a side of rock history not usually discussed outside of musician circles. As well as chatting about Immediate Family, we of course go back to The Wrecking Crew documentary, and Denny's relationship with his dad, legendary guitarist, Tommy Tedesco. If you want to find out details of where to stream the film or see a theatrical screening, go to https://immediatefamilyfilm.com/ Sadly, it would appear that it's only streaming in the US at the moment, but check for updates on the website or https://www.facebook.com/immediatefamilyfilm. Imbalanced History: Drums & Demons with author Joel Selvin

E

Jim Gordon was a kid who loved to play drums. Where would that love take him? Basically, everywhere! His inventive, musical percussion style created an incredible demand for his services. Having Jim on drums could change the fate of a recording project, and often did! The success and impact of Gordon's playing was legendary, long before the June 1983 murder of his mother, Osa. The voices "won" following a long, arduous struggle with his mental health. The voices in Jim's head led to a series of heinous actions, leading to murder and prison, after a decade of trying to get help for his then-undiagnosed mental illness. Author Joel Selvin (Altamont: The Rolling Stones, Hollywood Eden, Summer Of Love) visits The Imbalanced Boys to discuss his forthcoming book: Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey Of Jim Gordon, out February 27th through Diversion Books! While the music plays a huge part in this episode, the discussion centers around Jim's story, his illness and its effects on the lives around him. Listen, sure! But be sure to read Joel's new book when it hits at the end of February! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Simple Minds - Sparkle in the Rain

On UAWIL, we regularly talk about albums and bands that are big on one side of the Atlantic but for some reason never have great success on the other side of the pond. One glaring example is Simple Minds who have dozens of hits and many gold & platinum albums in the UK, Europe and around the world but never had huge success in the US. Most US fans know Don't You Forget About Me from The Breakfast Club soundtrack as it went to #1 in the US in early 1985. But because that song wasn't on a Simple Minds album until the 90s and because prior to that they received little to no airplay in the US, many fans see them as a one hit wonder and don't realize the extraordinary career Simple Minds have had with over 60 million records sold worldwide. As it turns 40 on February 6, 1984, Sparkle in the Rain was a bit of a transition from the techno pop band of New Gold Dream 81/82/83/84 to a band that were going places. Simple MInds were playing bigger venues, becoming friendly (and competitive) with U2 and wanted to make a bigger sound. They enlisted Steve Lillywhite (after he produced U2's War) to lead them to more radio-friendly, stadium enhancing tunes. In the end, it's a bit of a mixed bag with takes on fame (Up On The Catwalk), war (East at Easter), rebellion (The Kick Inside of Me) and UK chart climbers like Waterfront and Speed Your Love to Me. Vocalist Jim Kerr delivers an amazing performance but sometimes the lyrics are a bit opaque. Charlie Burchill is a brilliant guitarist but you can't always make out what he's doing as Mick MacNeil's keyboards play a prominent role. The addition of Mel Gaynor from London gave them a big boost and the album hit #1 in New Zealand and the UK where it went platinum. But still, the US had limited knowledge of the band until the Breakfast Club hit a year later. So we go track x track to try to understand why the US didn't pick up on this one and if that had something to do with why they never became huge there like they did in Europe. Metal Mayhem ROC :Filmmaker Damian Kolodiy IMMORTAL SOUL: A RIOT TRIBUTE & CONCERT FILM.

On this episode, we’re joined by Damian Kolodiy, Filmmaker & Founder of NYC ROCKS, a reality web series that follows people & bands active in today’s rock & metal scene. Damian, a NYC native currently residing in Germany, is promoting his new YouTube series covering the long history of the legendary NYC hard rock band, Riot: IMMORTAL SOUL: A RIOT TRIBUTE & CONCERT FILM. His 4-part documentary mini-series explores the history and archives of the different eras of the band, spotlighting specific live performances from each era. The film centers around the Keep It True festival (2022) in Germany, where interviews with Riot fans young and old illustrate this passion for the band. “Immortal Soul” also features interviews with longtime Riot members Don Van Stavern and Mike Flyntz, as well as “New York Rock” author/historian Steven Blush and Keep It True Festival founder Oliver Weinsheimer. The final chapter of the series tells the origin story of the current day formation of the band, Riot V, and how they are well suited to carry on the musical legacy of founder Mark Reale for a new generation of fans. In our dialogue with Damian, we learn just how he discovered this underappreciated band decades after their formation, what inspired him to make this film series, & how he set out to what would result in a massive undertaking of a project. Far more than just a chronicle & timeline of the bands career, his unique twist to their story comes to life with the amazing volume of archival content contained in the episodes. With vintage concert footage, 8mm personal film, concert advertisements plus hundreds of never seen before photos obtained from the family & estate of Mark Reale, as the Filmmaker states, “It’s a great story. My goal is so Riot is not forgotten”. Additionally, post-conversation with Damian, we caught up with Rick Ventura, Riot Guitarist from 1979 – 1983 & Founder of current & active band, Riot Act. In this exclusive conversation, we get Rick’s commentary on episodes 1 & 2, as well as his reflections from his time in the band, including some great stories from that era! As Rick tells us, this was a great time in his life & something that continues to motivate him to keep the legacy of Riot alive & well decades later. They were unique, which is why their debut album Marquee Moon sounds timeless, as fresh today as the day it was released in 1977. Fronted by two great guitarists-- the mercurial Richard Lloyd and the enigmatic Tom Verlaine, who also provided unorthodox vocals and most of the songwriting-- Television would influence generations of bands that followed. Though they never achieved commercial success, Marquee Moon regularly appears on virtually every "Greatest Albums Of All Time" list. On this episode, we explore the track that opens the album, "See No Evil". "See No Evil" (Verlaine) Copyright 1977 Double Exposure Music Ltd. ASCAP Learn more about your ad choices. It's Not That Bad - Spawn

In 1997, the Spawn animated series debuted on HBO. It proved that the world was ready for a dark, violent gritty take on the character that graced the pages of the Image Comics series. Also in 1997, Spawn debuted on the big screen. It didn’t fare as well. But fear not, as we prepare to take on the hellish task of proving that Spawn the movie is not that bad. And WHY?? – Part 3: The THREE DECADES of the 1970s FEATURED SONG: The Drop – “Stay With Me” (from It Wasn’t Me !) STREAM IT EVERYWHERE In Part 3 of my history of albums, we get to the big one: the 1970s. If the album can be said to have had a heyday (and I say nay), this is the decade when it happened. Sales rose. Creativity soared. Critics still look at this decade as a peak of the album as art. Many fans do too. I name check some of the big albums – creatively & commercially, and include some personal faves. I talk about how the album developed & expanded, as did genres both popular and underground. I also argue that the 1970s was really three decades in one. What are your favorite albums of the 1970s? Is this your favorite decade for albums, or do you feel it’s overrated? Can you hear the difference between early, middle & late decade music? Discuss dammit!
