Imbalanced History: 5 Favorites: American Women Singers Of The 1970s
EThe 1970s was an extremely fertile time for music, in general, but especially for all flavors of Rock. Much as here in the 21st century, the influence of women on music of all genres was over-the-top. That impact was felt, maybe most of all, by Rock music. In previous decades, much of the music being made by women was written for them, fabricated in Pop music factories, but in the '70s that changed! This week, Markus and Ray dig back to that era of cool hairdos, bell bottoms and artificial fabrics to find their favorites from that era! There are a couple surprises along the way! How many will they have in common? Will they match any picks? Listen to answer these, and other questions! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Pink Floyd - The Division Bell
EIn 1994, your hosts found themselves finishing their junior year of college when it was announced that Pink Floyd were coming back with a new album, The Division Bell, and a huge tour to promote it. After watching the concert film Delicate Sound of Thunder from the previous tour, The Wolf made it his mission to see them live. And of course, our hosts picked up the album as soon as it came out. But at the time, they found the album disappointing and didn't stand up to it's predecessor, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. However, as the album turns 30, we can look back at it with a better understanding of how this record stands up in the Pink Floyd catalog. We can appreciate that it was the first time in 20 years that David Gilmour and Rick Wright wrote songs together. We can enjoy David's extraordinary guitar work - how he can pull so much emotion out of each note still floors us to this day. And we can hear the heartbreak and new love found (Coming Back To Life), the hope for a better future (A Great Day For Freedom, Keep Talking) and the bitterness that lingers from their feud with Roger Waters (Poles Apart, Lost For Words). While some might dismiss this as latter day, Roger-less, not-as-classic Pink Floyd, we found that the tunes were better than we remembered and they conjured memories from a simpler and more wondrous time in our lives. And the memories from the lone time The Wolf ever saw Pink Floyd live help us warm to this record as a gem, albeit a dark horse, in the Pink Floyd catalog. I'm In Love With That Song: P.P. Arnold - "Medicated Goo"
You may not know her name, but I guarantee you've heard her voice. When acts as diverse as Graham Nash, Peter Gabriel and KLF are in need of a soulful vocal, PP Arnold has been a top choice. On this episode, we take a brief look at her career and examine a great lost track, featuring Eric Clapton and the Derek & The Dominos band, recorded in 1970 but didn't see the light of day until 47 years later. Ep 560Decibel Geek Podcast - The Best & Worst of Warrant - Ep563
EWe're back this week to discuss a band that experienced highs, lows, and tragedy throughout their career as we pick The Best & Worst of Warrant. Warrant, formed in Hollywood in 1984, would go through changes in their early years that would lead to recruiting then-Plain Jane members Jani Lane and Steven Sweet into the band. A false start under Prince, a soundtrack appearance, and touring would result in the band getting signed to Columbia Records. 1989's 'Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich' would spawn several hit singles including 'Down Boys,' 'Big Talk,' and 'Heaven' with the latter hitting #2 on Billboard. The doors would blow wide open with the release of 1990's 'Cherry Pie,' a song that was a blessing and a curse to the band. Controversy would also follow the band on their first two albums with British guitarist Mike Slamer being rumored to handle all guitar parts in the studio. 1992 would see musical tides shifting amid the release of 'Dog Eat Dog,' a tougher album produced by Michael Wagener. Things would stranger and more experimental with the band's 1995 and 1996 releases, 'Ultraphobic' and 'Belly to Belly' respectively. The band would flame out and briefly reunite before shifting singers twice more. Lead singer Jani Lane would tragically pass away to alcohol poisoning in 2011. We cover the Jani Lane lane era of Warrant this week and discuss those albums as well as the new tracks on Greatest & Latest (1999) and Under the Influence (2001) while picking what we deem to be the best and worst track off each. There's a lot to cover on and off the stage with this band and we think you'll enjoy our discussion. Let us know what your Best & Worst of Warrant is in the comments! They have been acclaimed by critics and musicians, and have influenced disparate styles and bands in every decade since they formed. Punk, metal, chamber pop and Britpop are just a few of the genres they helped shape, and in some ways pioneered. I go through their history, their albums, make the case that they might have been more quietly influential than even the Rolling Stones, and argue that it’s possible they’re the biggest indie band in history. Are you a Kinks fan? Where do they fall for you in the British Invasion hierarchy? Do you think they deserve more recognition? Discuss dammit! Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "The Final Countdown"
EOn the 49th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1986 album from Swedish rock band Europe, "The Final Countdown." The Final Countdown was Europe's 3rd studio album. The album was their breakthrough that saw them obtain their greatest success. The album went up to number 8 on the US Billboard album charts and has gone triple platinum. Europe is led by lead singer and main songwriter, Joey Tempest. Who was the typical lead singer from the era, big voice and big hair. Lead guitarist John Norum was perhaps one of the most underrated guitarist of that era. Rounding out the bad was John Leven on bass, Mic Michaeli on keyboards and rocking the keytar at times and Ian Haugland on drums. The album was produced by Kevin Elson. The Final Countdown was one of the defining albums of the "Hair Metal" era. From the infamous keyboards of the title track, "The Final Countdown" to typical 80's ballad, "Carrie" and to the rockers, "Rock The Night" and "Cherokee" the album was catapulted to the top. With the help of MTV, their videos with arms raised in the desert, singing into ketchup bottles and more gave Europe a lot exposure. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 47 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the Sonny's pick. So travel back in time to the mid 80's and grab your hairspray and your big teeth because its the Final Countdown! Do Do Do Do... Do Do Do Do Do... Surely You Can’t Be Serious x Famous & Gravy
Imagine this: You’re on a desert island, and you can choose one actor or actress – and ONLY ONE – for whom you get their entire IMDb catalog to pass the time. It’s just you, a palm tree, a DVD player (streaming hasn’t reached desert islands), and the IMDb catalog of a single performer. Who would you choose? This thought experiment was first proposed by Michael Osborne in our Bill Paxton episode, and now we take the experiment live. Today we bring you a crossover showdown between the hosts of the Surely You Can’t Be Serious Podcast and the Famous & Gravy hosts. Moderated by Jeff Johnson of the podcast A Film By, we humorously debate, argue, and ultimately find out who is in fact the IMDb MVP. Our nominees in this special episode were inspired by Episode 58 “Best in Show” (Fred Willard) and Episode 51 “Goofball Stud” (Bill Paxton). Prisoners of Rock and Roll - The Music of 1994
EGet ready to climb into the musical memory machine and take a trip back to 1994 as we revisit the music that came out 30 years ago. It was a year that defined our generation when Kurt Cobain took his own life. We got important albums like Purple from Stone Temple Pilots, Superunknown by Soundgarden, Sixteen Stone from Bush, Jar of Flies from Alice in Chains, Throwing Copper from Live, and Vitology from Pearl Jam. REM tried to plug in with Monster while Nirvana went unplugged on MTV. Mariah Carey transformed into a Christmas character, while Green Day and Offspring pushed punk onto the radio. Hootie & Blowfish, the Dave Matthews Band, the Cranberries, and Blues Traveler all entered the scene and helped define the mid 90s alternative sound. Hip hop had a fresh year with albums from Nas, the Beastie Boys, Bone Thugs & Harmony, and a newcomer called Notorious B.I.G. Join the Prisoners of Rock and Roll as we break out our flannel shirts and take a look back at the music of 1994. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Eric Clapton - 461 Ocen Blvd
The early 1970s were full of triumph and tragedy for Eric Clapton. The Guitar God who had bounced from band to band - The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith - finally went solo with mixed results. However, in 1971 Clapton struck gold on both sides of the Atlantic with Layla and his buddies in Derek & the Dominos. However, friend and guitarist Duane Allman died tragically in a car accident in late 1971 and while Clapton mourned his friend and longed for the love of his good buddy George Harrison's wife Patti, Clapton slipped deep into a heroin addiction. Once Eric came out of his fog, he knew he needed to get back to making music and needed a hit or else he might be written off as an over the hill (at 29) junkie. So he gathered some of his buddies from the Layla sessions, took up residence at a certain address in Miami and put together a million selling record with a #1 US hit with I Shot The Sheriff. You see the many faces of Clapton on here from the blues (I Can't Hold Out), to reggae (I Shot The Sheriff), to gospel (Give Me Strength). Opener Motherless Children is a tour de force with the slide guitar and the closer, Mainline Florida, features Clapton showing off his skills with the talk box. If this album hadn't sold so well, who knows what may have become of Eric and if we'd have been treated to all the amazing music he's given us over the last 50 years.
