Ep 80Banned Biographies: Interview with Jason Potbelly (Potbelly)

E

On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast, host Tom Austin-Morgan chats with Jason Potbelly, the co-lead vocalist, guitarist and driving force behind Washington-based punk band Potbelly. The band has been around and touring since 1995 and has built up quite the community by producing split EPs and compilation albums with a plethora of well-known and unsigned bands over the years as well as relentlessly touring around North America. In fact, they’ve released over 100 recordings over the years, so many that even Jason can’t remember the names of them all, as you’ll hear! Potbelly is finally coming to the UK this summer and I’ll be playing with them at their first show in London in July with my band Swampstomper (more details will follow once the full line up is confirmed and announced. Jason has so many stories from seeing the cream of the Seattle grunge scene play tiny venues and house parties in the 80s and 90s to insights about the political environment of the US and the crazy goings on in his area during covid, as well as booking tours and touring in the days before the internet when you had to use maps and phone books! You can find Potbelly by visiting PIG Records and on Facebook as well as on ReverbNation as well as the other streaming sites. If you search for them look for the logo with the scary-looking cartoon pig! Imbalanced History: Albums Turning 50 in 2024!

E

This episode starts with a grunge.com article about albums released in '74, and turning 50, but The Imbalanced Boys realized there was much more to 1974 than the writer covered. How can you fail to include Rock n' Roll Animal by Lou Reed, as an example. So, Markus and Ray dive into that rabbit hole in the second half of this week's podcast. Starting with Joni Mitchell's Court And Spark, and rolling through the year, and capping things with a special release by a RRHOF group, who changed the sonic landscape that year! Incredible releases from Steely Dan, Rush, Frank Zappa, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stevie Wonder and many more. A few artists (David Bowie, Kiss and Queen chief among them) had two releases in '74! So kick back in your bell bottoms and your favorite throwback bright vertical striped shirt, fire up the bong, and let's hop into the Imbalanced Time Machine: Set to 1974! Two things: -We are excited to be part of the party on 2/10/24 as Crooked Eye Brewing in Hatboro, PA marks 10 years of fun & brews with a huge party at the brewery featuring The Crooked Eye Band!!! Play That Rock n' Roll: Molly Hatchet, Part Two: The Current Lineup (1990 - 2024)

This is Part Two of Play That Rock n' Roll's retrospective about the legendary Southern Rock band, Molly Hatchet. In this episode, we cover the latter days of the band, their new direction under guitarist Bobby Ingram, and what they are up to today. We also discuss their turn towards heavier "Southern metal" music in the 2000s, the lead singers that took over for Danny Joe Brown, and even the band's controversial relationship with the confederate flag. We also pay tribute to all of the men who played in this band that are no longer with us today. To give further insight into some of the topics covered, I have included clips from conversation with Kerrang! magazine writer Xavier Russell, who covered Molly Hatchet extensively in the early '80s. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Eric Clapton Guitar Tech Lee Dickson Interview

We at The Wolf love the all-time classic British rock stars that helped found the movement of and continue to carry the torch of classic blues based rock n roll. We've spent countless hours (and dollars/pounds/euros/etc) to buy records, concert tickets, videos and books to learn more about the artists that brought rock music to the masses. This week, we speak with someone who'd met and/or worked with most all of them over the years, guitar tech Lee Dickson. Though born in Glasgow, he eventually made his way to London and started working in live music production. At the end of the 70s he ended up working with Eric Clapton who then picked Lee up as part of his crew where he eventually became Eric's guitar tech and was for nearly 30 years. Hear the stories of going to Japan with George Harrison and why George called Lee "Wanker" in his signed tour book - a story he's never shared before! Listen to Lee talk about working with Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgerts for the ARMS concerts. Feel the emotion when you hear him get choked up talking about the late great Ronnie Lane or doing concerts for sick children. Do you want to know about Live Aid? The Crossroads Festivals? Playing the White House with Lenny Kravitz? Working on the Rush soundtrack? Just listen up, you'll hear about all of that and more on this deliciously classic episode! S4 Ep 85Music Buzzz Ep. 85: Roger Earl (Foghat)

ABOUT ROGER EARL OF FOGHAT: Celebrating 50 years of Foghat in 2021, Roger Earl is still ferociously banging away! Born in London, England (Hampton Court & raised in Hounslow) in 1946 to a musical family where his father played piano at home and local pubs and there was always music in the house. Although he wanted to play piano, his older brother Colin Earl (keyboard player with the band Mungo Jerry of ‘In the Summertime’ fame) won that right. Roger began to play drums at the age of 12, took lessons for two years, and played with local bands around London while working as a commercial artist. He had a measure of success before auditioning for and joining the British Blues band Savoy Brown at age 20, with whom he recorded 5 albums (1967-1970) and toured the U.S. extensively. In 1970, Roger and Lonesome Dave Peverett decided to leave Savoy Brown to form Foghat. They enlisted former Savoy bass player Tony Stevens and Slide guitarist Rod Price and the rest has been rock n’ roll history. I'm In Love With That Song: The Kinks - "Dead End Street"

"Dead End Street" marked a shift in Ray Davies' songwriting. His songs began to take on a more UK-specific focus. And if not political, it was at least more socially pointed, as he sings about an out-of-work, impoverished couple who wonder, "What are we living for?" 50+ years on, many still ask that same question. Shout It Out Loudcast: "World Domination Tour"

E

This week Tom & Zeus review the 2003 "World Domination Tour" which featured KISS & Aerosmith. This is SIOL's 7th KISS tour reviewed. This tour was unique because it featured two of the premier hard rock bands from the United States of all time. Both bands were huge in the 1970's and both had major comebacks, Aerosmith in the 1980's and KISS in the 1990's. The tour also was known for Aerosmith insisting that at least three original members of KISS be in the band. With Ace Frehley definitely out of the picture, the original catman, Peter Criss returned to join Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and the new spaceman, Tommy Thayer. The tour had KISS opening up and Aerosmith finishing. Some fans were disappointed because both legendary bands had to shorten their setlist too accommodate the other band. The band at this point was 5 years removed from their last album and would play a setlitst of mostly classic makeup hits. The tour was a success and Tom & Zeus did get to see the tour when they visited Mansfield, Massachusetts. As usual, the guys breakdown the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour. They then rank the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour against the previous 6 tours reviewed so far. So tune and make sure to catch KISS and try to avoid Honkin' On Bobo. First Concert Memories #7: Meat Loaf with Stephanie Myers of Songfacts Podcast

We conjured up First Concert Memories, our monthly sidecast to talk about the first time our guests saw a particular band, to share some passion about the rock n roll we all love. And Stephanie Myers is so passionate about Meat Loaf that she wears a necklace made of his guitar string. Host of the Songfacts Podcast and co-host of Stephanie & Stephanie Talk Tunes Podcast, she is a vivid storyteller and a Meat Loaf Superfan who's seen him live 13 times! As The Wolf & Action Jackson are not Meat Loaf know-it-alls, it was so much fun to have a few laughs with Stephanie and learn from her deep well of knowledge on her favorite artist. Stephanie reveals how she got into Meat Loaf as a 12 year old as Bat Out Of Hell II was all over the radio, MTV, VH1 and radios all over the world. We'll get into the theatrics of the show and the special song he sang that night in Houston on August 3, 1994. But we'll also hear from Stephanie about how she had to cajole and bargain with her parents over many months to make her dream of seeing Meat Loaf live come true. We share some laughs and stories with Stephanie on a fun episode of First Concert Memories! It's Not That Bad - Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice

When we were kids, we all took our action figures and bashed them together as if those characters would actually have reason to fight. In a lot of those cases, the dialogue we made up in our heads for those action figures was probably better than what ended up in some superhero films. But don’t worry, no need to bash anything here because we’re about to venture into the world of DC and see if Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is not that bad. Special guest: Lyle Robichaud. Dave Kratzke and I connected via Jay Armstrong. He was working with Jay's new book Ordinary Hero, (which is phenomenal by the way) Dave's own book, "It's OK to not eat your peas" is also a lot of fun. Dave has been a Springsteen fan since the early 80s, and has been lucky enough to see him 30-plus times over the years. We had a wonderful time and I can't wait for Dave to join me again sometime. S3 Ep 45Rock is Lit: ‘Tonechaser’ Chronicles Part 2: Music Journalist Steve Rosen Talks About His Friendship With Eddie Van Halen

Thanks for joining me for Part 2 of my in-depth interview with music journalist Steve Rosen on his decades-long friendship with Eddie Van Halen, which culminated in Steve’s 2022 book, ‘Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen’. The third edition of the book is coming soon, but you can preorder your copy now at tonechaserbook.com. For more information on Steve Rosen and the Van Halen Fiction Challenge I offered all you Lit Listeners who, like me, are jonesing to get your hands on some novels or short stories or graphic novels featuring the band, check out Part 1 of Episode 45, or email me at [email protected]. I can’t wait to see what you come up with, and if I wind up devoting an episode to Van Halen fiction that you suggested, I’ll give you a shout out in the episode. Back to Steve Rosen: In Part 1, Steve and I talked about the genesis of his friendship with Eddie Van Halen, Eddie’s background as a kid immigrating from the Netherlands to America and his devotion to and respect for his father and brother, the idolatry Eddie’s fans feel for him, and the seeds that eventually sprouted into Steve’s book ‘Tonechaser’. In Part 2, get ready to learn more about Steve’s complicated relationship with Eddie, including the dark turn it took in the early 2000s and how Eddie’s 2020 death still haunts Steve. You’ll also hear about Eddie’s marriage to Valerie Bertinelli and his love for their son, Wolfgang. Finally, Steve shares juicy stories about his journalistic career beyond his work with Van Halen, such as his tumultuous experience interviewing John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin in 1977. Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Jim Morrison: Brilliant or Buffoon?

E

The Doors were one of the most influential and iconic bands of the 1960s – they built a dark counterculture sound on a foundation of Ray Manzarek’s organ playing that combined elements of poetry, blues, rock and roll, jazz, and psychedelic music. At the front of it all was their charismatic, volatile, and enigmatic lead singer Jim Morrison. There’s no doubt that he was the embodiment of the whole sex, drugs, and rock and roll thing. The good looking frontman who helped forge his legacy by dying young. But was Jim Morrison a brilliant visionary or a rock and roll buffoon? On one hand, he saw himself as the Lizard King. A poet and mystic who was influenced by his background in literature and film. On the other hand, Jim was also an erratic, self-indulgent showman. A hardcore alcoholic who clashed with his parents, his bandmates, and most famously, the police. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at the life and legacy of Jim Morrison and debating if he was brilliant or a buffoon? Imbalanced History: Billboard's Chart Run Champions

E

We looked into an article on Louder Sound that talked about the longest runs on the Billboard album chart. That chart started as a Top 10 in the 1950s, expanding through to 1967 when it became the Billboard 200! That's name most of us know. This adventure just might include the most artists not previously profiled in one of our episodes: Lana Del Rey, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Adele. Add chart champs of the '50s (Johnny Mathis, My Fair Lady OST), and this is a different musical journey. There's even a little controversy about Pink Floyd's "Dark Side" run (solved by the Research Team), and a ton more to discover. To add contrast the Boys also discuss the record-setting chart runs versus album sales. So many artist who have sold massive numbers, but didn't have a record-setter: The Eagles, Garth Brooks (both twice), AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles! Two things: -We are excited to be part of the party on 2/10/24 as Crooked Eye Brewing in Hatboro, PA marks 10 years of fun & brews with a huge party at the brewery featuring The Crooked Eye Band!!! We will be there, recording for a special episode marking their 10th, and our 5th in March!!! -Punk Rock Month '24 is in the works...stay tuned for more about a kickass April! In a time that many seem all-too-thrilled to declare the death of a genre, there was an increasing number of great albums and songs released in 2023. Plenty of new material from veteran artists was released in 2023 including albums by The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Overkill, Dokken, Halestorm, Prong, Metallica, Metal Church, Extreme among others. Lots of newer bands were forging their own path last year with new music such as Rock City Machine Co, Ravenstine, Seven Ravens, Iron Void, Crown Lands, Fortune Child and more. Other notable releases for 2023 including music from Marvelous 3, Wolfgang Van Halen, and Halestorm. Did any of these albums make our lists? You'll have to listen to find out. Chris and Aaron each count down their Top 10 releases from the year that was 2023. We hope you enjoy and share YOUR choices in the comments! Ugly American Werewolf in London - KISS - KISS (The Debut Album)

KISS is one of the most legendary bands in the history of rock n roll. From their iconic makeup to their bombastic stage shows to the marketing and licensing of every product under the sun, KISS has been a part of popular culture for half a century. The self-titled debut album, KISS, didn't grab everyone's attention out of the gate, however. While they had some killer riffs supplied by original guitarist Ace Frehley, some funky bass from Gene Simmons, swinging drumming from Peter Criss and superstar vocals from Paul Stanley, the band were still forming their sound and identity. In fact, the sales of the album were so slow that Casablanca Records chief Neil Bogart cajoled the band into recording a 50s cover, Kissin Time, which he thought would help boost sales as a single. Even though Kissin Time was added to every copy of KISS after the first 100,000 or so, it didn't help generate more sales. But their reputation as a great live band had KISS winning fans around the nation. And while KISS wouldn't capture that live sound until ALIVE! a couple of years later, this album has some great tracks which are still KISS classics today like Deuce, Strutter, Cold Gin and Black Diamond. We give it our usual track x track evaluation and throw in lots of KISS tidbits. As a special bonus, we have included a clip from Space Ace himself, Ace Frehley. As Ace recently spoke with Paul Stephenson of VRP Rocks (a good friend of Ugly American Werewolf in London), Paul asked Ace a question from The Wolf about the timing of his new solo release 10,000 Volts and how it's coming out almost 50 years to the day from the release of KISS. Ace may not answer the question we asked but it's amazing that Paul asked if for us and the audio is included somewhere in the episode - you'll have to listen to hear from Ace!! Shout It Out Loudcast: "Dynasty

E

This week Tom & Zeus review the 1979 polarizing KISS album, "Dynasty." This was KISS' 7th studio album and the 21st KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Dynasty was the first studio album since Love Gun in 1977. This was the longest time between studio albums for KISS. It was the last studio to feature all original members until Psycho Circus in 1998. The album was produced by Vini Poncia, who Peter Criss demanded and had previously produced Peter's 1978 solo album. The band was definitely changing. Super KISS had been formed. The band wore flashier outfits with capes and became more comic book-like. They experimented with more pop and yes, even disco, with their huge international smash, "I Was Made For Lovin' You, written with this new upcoming songwriter, Desmond Child. Producer Vini Poncia was instrumental in this new sound, however the band did write some of their best songs, like the brilliant, "Sure Know Something." Yes brilliant! However, this departure in sound and style alienated a lot of the KISS Army. The album also featured all four members sing at least on song, just as they did on Love Gun. However, this album featured Ace Frehley on three songs, by far his most. Gene Simmons only sang on only two. The album also featured ghost player, Anton Fig on drums. Peter Criss only played drums on his song, "Dirty Livin'." The album cover was the iconic photo of the four faces of the band. The inside photo of the band in black also became legendary. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. So tune in to another must listen to SIOL album review. S3 Ep 45Rock is Lit: ‘Tonechaser’ Chronicles Part 1: Music Journalist Steve Rosen Talks About His Friendship With Eddie Van Halen

Welcome to Part 1 of Episode 45, featuring Steve Rosen. Steve is a highly respected music journalist and author of more than 1,000 articles and seven books, delving into the lives of iconic figures like Jeff Beck, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, and Black Sabbath. His latest endeavor, ‘Tonechaser – Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen’, was published in 2022. The book offers an intimate perspective on the guitar virtuoso and Steve’s friendship with him from 1977 to 2003. In the introduction to the book, Steve writes, “What you will read here is not a biography, a history, or an exacting chronology. You won’t find discussions about tapping, taping, or touring. There are no in-depth analyses of album releases or his profound and absolute rewriting of the entire canon of electric guitar playing. . . . Rather think of this as a memory journal, a chronicle filled with observations, illuminations, and interpretations and what the hell does that mean? It means telling you about what I saw—the observing—shedding some first-hand light on what I was seeing—the illuminating—and trying to explain and decipher what I was witnessing—the interpreting” (XVII). The Metallica Report: 26: Part 2 - Old School Deep Dive with KJ Doughton, Brian Lew, and Ron Quintana

The week of January 24, 2024 on The Metallica Report… A fortuitous call from Kirk sets the stage, framing the metal scene in the early days and the roles Ron, Brian, and KJ played. Brian recalls the enthusiasm surrounding Metallica’s first album by the band members and, if you will, the founding Metallica Family members - many of whom would be acknowledged decades later. KJ traces Lars’ passion for supporting his peers back to the early ’80s, with one album in particular. Ron further taps into Metallica’s appreciation for music, discussing Lars’ and Cliff’s eclectic tastes. The Metallica Report - your official, weekly guide for all things Metallica, straight from the source. New episode every Wednesday.
