Eager to ditch the nu-metal label, Deftones headed into the studio with a goal to separate themselves from the pack on their second album Around the Fur. When the history of late 70s punk music is discussed, a point often raised is that bands like The Sex Pistols and the Damned and The Saints were reacting to the over complexity of prog bands. Certainly, it makes for a good quote, but Steve Jones is on the record as being a fan of Fleetwood Mac and Queen and other “dinosaur” bands punk was supposed to sweep away. I can’t recall for sure, but I THINK I read somewhere that Yes was some punk guitarist’s favourite band. Really, if so much of that early era of British punk was about great pop songs with buzzsaw guitars, I believe I can make a case that Yes was a band (unlike, say, early Genesis) that also played around with standard pop structure…..just for considerably longer than 2 minutes at a time. There’s the link between punk and prog (at least Yes’ approach to it). Welcome to episode 174 of Love That Album podcast. Whether a superstar, making a living, or barely making any money at all, every musician must assess and reassess whether it’s worth it to continue, and if so, how. The bottom line is … the bottom line. All artists need money. Money to create. Money to live. Most of us don’t make much, and have to supplement our incomes. Or worse yet, we’re urged to ask for money from fans, friends & family – people who often have as little as we do. I gave this a lot of thought, and realized there’s a solution. I called it THE $50,000 MANIFESTO, and published it on social a couple of years ago. To our ears it might sound radical, even outrageous. But it’s not unprecedented. Plenty of countries and eras have implemented it. So on PODFAST 18, I’m going to read my manifesto in full. Chess Records was an independent record label created on the South Side of Chicago in 1950 by two Polish immigrants named Leonard and Phil Chess. As one of the most important blues labels of all time, Chess Records captured the electric sound of the American South and had a huge influence on the early days of rock and roll. Chess Records helped introduce America to Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Howlin’ Wolf, and Etta James. And when these albums made their way across the Atlantic, they inspired the British blues movement that gave us Clapton, Zeppelin, and of course, the Rolling Stones. In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at the history of Chess Records: how it got started, their impressive roster of important musicians, and the influence that these songs had on rock and roll. We’re also look at the shadier side of the label, where artists didn’t get paid the royalties they deserved and DJs were given writing credits in exchange for playing records. Some artists knew exactly when it was the right time to check out. Others ended their recording careers with a big question mark or ellipsis, like there was unfinished work to be done. The latter is the topic of our discussion this week: Which artists or bands do we wish had stuck around longer and released more music? A little more than a decade ago, we probably would have included B-Movie on that list, as they were one of the major "what if?" bands of the '80s. After a run on the Dead Good and Some Bizarre labels in the early '80s that resulted in post-punk classics such as the era-defining "Nowhere Girl", "Remembrance Day" and "Marilyn Dreams", they released the fantastic synth-pop single "A Letter From Afar" (1984) and their sole full-length LP, Forever Running (1985), before calling it a day. That is, until they resumed their recording career in 2012, picking up and expanding upon their legacy with the full length albums The Age Of Illusion (2013) and Climate Of Fear (2016), as well as the EPs Distant Skies (2013), Repetition (2018), and two new tracks in 2022. It has been a most welcome return and artistic triumph for our heroes. This week Tom & Zeus review the recently released solo album from former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley, "10,000 Volts." Ace Frehley's new album has been hyped and discussed more than any other rock album in memory. In this episode, we’re exploring the new James Durbin CD “Screaming Steel”. Durbin is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Santa Cruz, California. Metal heads associate his name with his appearance on Season 10 of American Idol (2011), where appeared with Judas Priest for rousing renditions of "Livin' After Midnight" and "Breaking the Law" and also appeared with legendary guitarist Zakk Wylde. This was followed by Durbin’s debut album, 2011’s “Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster” that blended a mix of hard hitting riffs, vulnerable lyrics, and Durbin’s signature screams. In this interview, James relives his experience sharing the stage with Judas Priest, then takes us on his musical journey post American Idol, leading up to him joining Quiet Riot, then FINALLY releasing his first true heavy metal album “The Beast Awakens” in 2021, 10 years after American Idol. They also discuss James second heavy metal release, the new “Screaming Steel”, just released in 2024. On the 50th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest Murph review the 1971 legendary album from the classic rock band The Who "Who's Next." The Who was already one the greatest rock bands of all time in 1971 when they began working on a new project from guitarist Pete Townshend, called "Lifehouse." The band scrapped the plan (with the help from their producer Glyn Johns) and decided to use their best songs for a new rock album. The result was their greatest album and one for the greatest rock albums of all time. The band was in their prime, led by main songwriter, guitarist and music genius Pete Townshend. Roger Daltrey was the prototype lead singer of the time, a good looking, charismatic frontman with incredible vocals. Bassist John Entwistle is considered by many as the greatest bass player of all time. Rounding out the lineup is one of rock music's most iconic character, the insane Keith Moon, who was just as good a drummer as he was a madman. The album was produced by the talented Glyn Johns and The Who. Who's Next boasts some of classic rock's greatest songs, including, Baba O'Riley, Bargain, Behind Blue Eyes and Won't Get Fooled Again. These songs and more are staples on classic rock stations. The album has gone triple platinum in the United States and is constantly on the greatest albums lists. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 48 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. As a medical doctor and a writer, he achieved a level of popular renown rare among scientists. He first won widespread attention in 1973 for his book “Awakenings,” about a group of patients with an atypical form of encephalitis or “sleeping sickness” who responded to a new drug treatment with a partial rebirth. The 1980s are considered a big decade for singles, so we often forget that some of the greatest and biggest selling albums were released then. I talk about those albums, as well as lesser known notable albums, and how technology influenced their crafting. As synths and recording became more and more affordable, artists were able to take more control over how an album was produced and crafted. This created the first true underground scenes, and split music and album development between the big stars of the industry pop machine and smaller artists of the indie label scenes. NOTE: Because I know more about the 1980s than previous decades, I’m splitting this episode into two parts. This week’s episode will go to 1985.
