They have been acclaimed by critics and musicians, and have influenced disparate styles and bands in every decade since they formed. Punk, metal, chamber pop and Britpop are just a few of the genres they helped shape, and in some ways pioneered. I go through their history, their albums, make the case that they might have been more quietly influential than even the Rolling Stones, and argue that it’s possible they’re the biggest indie band in history. Are you a Kinks fan? Where do they fall for you in the British Invasion hierarchy? Do you think they deserve more recognition? Discuss dammit! Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "The Final Countdown"
EOn the 49th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1986 album from Swedish rock band Europe, "The Final Countdown." The Final Countdown was Europe's 3rd studio album. The album was their breakthrough that saw them obtain their greatest success. The album went up to number 8 on the US Billboard album charts and has gone triple platinum. Europe is led by lead singer and main songwriter, Joey Tempest. Who was the typical lead singer from the era, big voice and big hair. Lead guitarist John Norum was perhaps one of the most underrated guitarist of that era. Rounding out the bad was John Leven on bass, Mic Michaeli on keyboards and rocking the keytar at times and Ian Haugland on drums. The album was produced by Kevin Elson. The Final Countdown was one of the defining albums of the "Hair Metal" era. From the infamous keyboards of the title track, "The Final Countdown" to typical 80's ballad, "Carrie" and to the rockers, "Rock The Night" and "Cherokee" the album was catapulted to the top. With the help of MTV, their videos with arms raised in the desert, singing into ketchup bottles and more gave Europe a lot exposure. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 47 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the Sonny's pick. So travel back in time to the mid 80's and grab your hairspray and your big teeth because its the Final Countdown! Do Do Do Do... Do Do Do Do Do... Surely You Can’t Be Serious x Famous & Gravy
Imagine this: You’re on a desert island, and you can choose one actor or actress – and ONLY ONE – for whom you get their entire IMDb catalog to pass the time. It’s just you, a palm tree, a DVD player (streaming hasn’t reached desert islands), and the IMDb catalog of a single performer. Who would you choose? This thought experiment was first proposed by Michael Osborne in our Bill Paxton episode, and now we take the experiment live. Today we bring you a crossover showdown between the hosts of the Surely You Can’t Be Serious Podcast and the Famous & Gravy hosts. Moderated by Jeff Johnson of the podcast A Film By, we humorously debate, argue, and ultimately find out who is in fact the IMDb MVP. Our nominees in this special episode were inspired by Episode 58 “Best in Show” (Fred Willard) and Episode 51 “Goofball Stud” (Bill Paxton). Prisoners of Rock and Roll - The Music of 1994
EGet ready to climb into the musical memory machine and take a trip back to 1994 as we revisit the music that came out 30 years ago. It was a year that defined our generation when Kurt Cobain took his own life. We got important albums like Purple from Stone Temple Pilots, Superunknown by Soundgarden, Sixteen Stone from Bush, Jar of Flies from Alice in Chains, Throwing Copper from Live, and Vitology from Pearl Jam. REM tried to plug in with Monster while Nirvana went unplugged on MTV. Mariah Carey transformed into a Christmas character, while Green Day and Offspring pushed punk onto the radio. Hootie & Blowfish, the Dave Matthews Band, the Cranberries, and Blues Traveler all entered the scene and helped define the mid 90s alternative sound. Hip hop had a fresh year with albums from Nas, the Beastie Boys, Bone Thugs & Harmony, and a newcomer called Notorious B.I.G. Join the Prisoners of Rock and Roll as we break out our flannel shirts and take a look back at the music of 1994. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Eric Clapton - 461 Ocen Blvd
The early 1970s were full of triumph and tragedy for Eric Clapton. The Guitar God who had bounced from band to band - The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith - finally went solo with mixed results. However, in 1971 Clapton struck gold on both sides of the Atlantic with Layla and his buddies in Derek & the Dominos. However, friend and guitarist Duane Allman died tragically in a car accident in late 1971 and while Clapton mourned his friend and longed for the love of his good buddy George Harrison's wife Patti, Clapton slipped deep into a heroin addiction. Once Eric came out of his fog, he knew he needed to get back to making music and needed a hit or else he might be written off as an over the hill (at 29) junkie. So he gathered some of his buddies from the Layla sessions, took up residence at a certain address in Miami and put together a million selling record with a #1 US hit with I Shot The Sheriff. You see the many faces of Clapton on here from the blues (I Can't Hold Out), to reggae (I Shot The Sheriff), to gospel (Give Me Strength). Opener Motherless Children is a tour de force with the slide guitar and the closer, Mainline Florida, features Clapton showing off his skills with the talk box. If this album hadn't sold so well, who knows what may have become of Eric and if we'd have been treated to all the amazing music he's given us over the last 50 years. We also discuss their turn towards heavier "Southern metal" music in the 2000s, the lead singers that took over for Danny Joe Brown, and even the band's controversial relationship with the confederate flag. We also pay tribute to all of the men who played in this band that are no longer with us today. To give further insight into some of the topics covered, I have included clips from conversation with Kerrang! magazine writer Xavier Russell, who covered Molly Hatchet extensively in the early '80s. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Eric Clapton Guitar Tech Lee Dickson Interview
We at The Wolf love the all-time classic British rock stars that helped found the movement of and continue to carry the torch of classic blues based rock n roll. We've spent countless hours (and dollars/pounds/euros/etc) to buy records, concert tickets, videos and books to learn more about the artists that brought rock music to the masses. This week, we speak with someone who'd met and/or worked with most all of them over the years, guitar tech Lee Dickson. Though born in Glasgow, he eventually made his way to London and started working in live music production. At the end of the 70s he ended up working with Eric Clapton who then picked Lee up as part of his crew where he eventually became Eric's guitar tech and was for nearly 30 years. Hear the stories of going to Japan with George Harrison and why George called Lee "Wanker" in his signed tour book - a story he's never shared before! Listen to Lee talk about working with Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgerts for the ARMS concerts. Feel the emotion when you hear him get choked up talking about the late great Ronnie Lane or doing concerts for sick children. Do you want to know about Live Aid? The Crossroads Festivals? Playing the White House with Lenny Kravitz? Working on the Rush soundtrack? Just listen up, you'll hear about all of that and more on this deliciously classic episode! S4 Ep 85Music Buzzz Ep. 85: Roger Earl (Foghat)
ABOUT ROGER EARL OF FOGHAT: Celebrating 50 years of Foghat in 2021, Roger Earl is still ferociously banging away! Born in London, England (Hampton Court & raised in Hounslow) in 1946 to a musical family where his father played piano at home and local pubs and there was always music in the house. Although he wanted to play piano, his older brother Colin Earl (keyboard player with the band Mungo Jerry of ‘In the Summertime’ fame) won that right. Roger began to play drums at the age of 12, took lessons for two years, and played with local bands around London while working as a commercial artist. He had a measure of success before auditioning for and joining the British Blues band Savoy Brown at age 20, with whom he recorded 5 albums (1967-1970) and toured the U.S. extensively. In 1970, Roger and Lonesome Dave Peverett decided to leave Savoy Brown to form Foghat. They enlisted former Savoy bass player Tony Stevens and Slide guitarist Rod Price and the rest has been rock n’ roll history. I'm In Love With That Song: The Kinks - "Dead End Street"
"Dead End Street" marked a shift in Ray Davies' songwriting. His songs began to take on a more UK-specific focus. And if not political, it was at least more socially pointed, as he sings about an out-of-work, impoverished couple who wonder, "What are we living for?" 50+ years on, many still ask that same question. Shout It Out Loudcast: "World Domination Tour"
EThis week Tom & Zeus review the 2003 "World Domination Tour" which featured KISS & Aerosmith. This is SIOL's 7th KISS tour reviewed. This tour was unique because it featured two of the premier hard rock bands from the United States of all time. Both bands were huge in the 1970's and both had major comebacks, Aerosmith in the 1980's and KISS in the 1990's. The tour also was known for Aerosmith insisting that at least three original members of KISS be in the band. With Ace Frehley definitely out of the picture, the original catman, Peter Criss returned to join Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and the new spaceman, Tommy Thayer. The tour had KISS opening up and Aerosmith finishing. Some fans were disappointed because both legendary bands had to shorten their setlist too accommodate the other band. The band at this point was 5 years removed from their last album and would play a setlitst of mostly classic makeup hits. The tour was a success and Tom & Zeus did get to see the tour when they visited Mansfield, Massachusetts. As usual, the guys breakdown the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour. They then rank the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour against the previous 6 tours reviewed so far. So tune and make sure to catch KISS and try to avoid Honkin' On Bobo. First Concert Memories #7: Meat Loaf with Stephanie Myers of Songfacts Podcast
We conjured up First Concert Memories, our monthly sidecast to talk about the first time our guests saw a particular band, to share some passion about the rock n roll we all love. And Stephanie Myers is so passionate about Meat Loaf that she wears a necklace made of his guitar string. Host of the Songfacts Podcast and co-host of Stephanie & Stephanie Talk Tunes Podcast, she is a vivid storyteller and a Meat Loaf Superfan who's seen him live 13 times! As The Wolf & Action Jackson are not Meat Loaf know-it-alls, it was so much fun to have a few laughs with Stephanie and learn from her deep well of knowledge on her favorite artist. Stephanie reveals how she got into Meat Loaf as a 12 year old as Bat Out Of Hell II was all over the radio, MTV, VH1 and radios all over the world. We'll get into the theatrics of the show and the special song he sang that night in Houston on August 3, 1994. But we'll also hear from Stephanie about how she had to cajole and bargain with her parents over many months to make her dream of seeing Meat Loaf live come true. We share some laughs and stories with Stephanie on a fun episode of First Concert Memories! It's Not That Bad - Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice
When we were kids, we all took our action figures and bashed them together as if those characters would actually have reason to fight. In a lot of those cases, the dialogue we made up in our heads for those action figures was probably better than what ended up in some superhero films. But don’t worry, no need to bash anything here because we’re about to venture into the world of DC and see if Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is not that bad. Special guest: Lyle Robichaud.
