Comes A Time: Photographer Rosie McGee Part I
In this 2 part special of Comes A Time, photographer Rosie McGee shares stories behind her iconic photos of the Grateful Dead and San Francisco music scene in the 1960s. She started taking photos at age 12 and lived with the Dead when they moved to LA in 1966, capturing intimate behind-the-scenes moments. Her photos show the band as fresh-faced kids, like a baby-faced Bob Weir looking similar to Mike's daughter. She has great photos of Pigpen, describing him as very sweet and quiet offstage. Some of Rosie's favorite photos include young Jerry Garcia backstage with a Les Paul goldtop and lamb chops, a whimsical Grace Slick looking elf-like in Central Park, Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane who she knew before the Dead, and a rare candid of Jerry with Owsley "Bear" Stanley which she slyly shot hiding behind a palm frond since he hated being photographed. The photos provide a fascinating look into the vibrant 1960s San Francisco music scene. Rosie reminisces about the early days and characters like Kesey, the Airplane, and more. Her photos capture intimate unguarded moments that show the humanity and bonds between these legendary figures when they were just young creative souls. Stay tuned for Part 2 with more stories behind Rosie's classic archives. Ep 567Decibel Geek Podcast - Metal Shop Memories with Charlie Kendall - Ep565
EThis week radio legend Charlie Kendall joins us to discuss the past, present, and future of Metal Shop! From 1984-1995, broadcast superstar Kendall was a driving force of the metal revolution as he hosted this iconic program on over 250 stations. Metalshop was to rock radio what Headbanger’s Ball was to television. Now, he’s joined forces with KRFK Radio (a division of Keel’s RFK Media) to deliver new shows to a worldwide audience that celebrates and enjoys the music of the wild and the young. In this discussion Charlie covers the history of Metal Shop; how he got the idea, how it was pitched, and how Judas Priest played a big role in the show getting green-lit. The show became an institution for rock and metal fans and the genre grew exponentially in popularity throughout the 1980's. As with the music, the rock radio world went through a tidal wave of changes in the 1990's and Metal Shop was not spared. Charlie shares his thoughts on how the show ended, the state of radio in today's society, and his take on music podcasting and it's marketability going forward. Other topics covered include Charlie's early experience in radio at the age of 14, his work with NEWHD Media and it's charitable efforts for people with autism, and more. Stories involving Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, Dee Snider, Artie Kornfeld, and Alice Cooper are also included. Throughout the episode you'll hear clips from the the heyday of Metal Shop to help take you back in time. For now though, you can check out the all new Metal Shop on KFRK Radio! The full Metal Shop broadcast schedule can also be found at charliekendall.com. You've got to check it out, it's everything you loved about the show brought into today! Famous & Gravy: Defiant One (Sidney Poitier)
In 2009, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Although often simmering with repressed anger, his characters responded to injustice with quiet determination. He once wrote “I felt very much as if I were representing 18 million people with every move I made.” In a departure from acting, he directed the 1980 comedy “Stir Crazy,” starring Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. He was the first black performer to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. His acting credits include “Blackboard Jungle,” “The Defiant Ones,” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” Today’s dead celebrity is Sidney Poitier. Only Three Lads: Top 5 Canadian Albums (with Autogramm)
EIf you wake up in the morning, feeling shy and lonely, and think "gee, I gotta go to school" (or work), brighten your day with O3L. If you don't think you can make it, don't think you can take it, and wonder what you're going to do, we're here for you. Everybody can succeed, all you need is to believe. Be honest with yourself, forget your fears and doubts. C'mon, give us a try at Degrassi...oops, we mean, Only Three Lads! By now, it may be abundantly obvious that we are celebrating our friends to our north, as we discuss our Top 5 Canadian Albums of the O3L era. Joining us for the topic on hand is the synth-soaked power poppers Autogramm, whose members are from Vancouver, Seattle, and Chicago. Their recently released album Music That Humans Can Play is out now on vinyl and digital formats on Stomp Records. It's an album that draws influences from The Cars, 20/20, Devo, Cheap Trick, The Boys and others, resulting in a cohesive and blissfully cool album that will appeal to listeners from record store snobs to garage rock slobs to synth-pop heartthrobs! We had a blast speaking with Jiffy Marx (vocals, synths, guitars), The Silo (vocals, drums, synths, guitars), CC Voltage (vocals, bass, guitars) and Lars Von Seattle (guitars, vocals). So please don't be a hoser or a broomhead - just listen, eh? Technical note: We experienced technical difficulties with a couple of audio tracks and had to resort to a lower resolution cloud recording for some sections. You may hear some echo or inconsistent volume at times, but it shouldn't impair your enjoyment of this fun conversation! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: David Gilmour - About Face
EAfter Pink Floyd delivered The Final Cut, the 1983 album which would be Roger Waters last with the band, David Gilmour found himself at an impasse. While he had some music ready for a new album as Roger had domineered the writing in Pink Floyd for the last 5+ years, he was unsure of the band's future. And since Roger was working on a solo concept album (The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking) David decided it was time he find out if he could make it outside of Pink Floyd. So he enlisted some heavy hitters like Bob Ezrin (producer), Jeff Pocaro (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards), Steve Winwood (keyboards), and Pete Townshend (lyrics) to help him create a solo album for 1984. The result was About Face with some statements on the death of John Lennon (Murder), the US putting missiles in the UK (Cruise) and his relationship with Roger (You Know I'm Right) which would continue to be a source of lyrics for the next two Roger-less Pink Floyd albums - A Momentary Lapse of Reason (reviewed on UAWIL #69) and The Division Bell (UAWIL #168). We're not sure if David was truly looking to break away from the band and become a big solo act or just had pent up anger and music that had to get out. The tour to support the album was more successful than the album itself and it may not be our favorite but there are some bright spots and some riffs that would foreshadow things to come in Pink Floyd. Imbalanced History: 5 Favorites: American Women Singers Of The 1970s
EThe 1970s was an extremely fertile time for music, in general, but especially for all flavors of Rock. Much as here in the 21st century, the influence of women on music of all genres was over-the-top. That impact was felt, maybe most of all, by Rock music. In previous decades, much of the music being made by women was written for them, fabricated in Pop music factories, but in the '70s that changed! This week, Markus and Ray dig back to that era of cool hairdos, bell bottoms and artificial fabrics to find their favorites from that era! There are a couple surprises along the way! How many will they have in common? Will they match any picks? Listen to answer these, and other questions! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Pink Floyd - The Division Bell
EIn 1994, your hosts found themselves finishing their junior year of college when it was announced that Pink Floyd were coming back with a new album, The Division Bell, and a huge tour to promote it. After watching the concert film Delicate Sound of Thunder from the previous tour, The Wolf made it his mission to see them live. And of course, our hosts picked up the album as soon as it came out. But at the time, they found the album disappointing and didn't stand up to it's predecessor, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. However, as the album turns 30, we can look back at it with a better understanding of how this record stands up in the Pink Floyd catalog. We can appreciate that it was the first time in 20 years that David Gilmour and Rick Wright wrote songs together. We can enjoy David's extraordinary guitar work - how he can pull so much emotion out of each note still floors us to this day. And we can hear the heartbreak and new love found (Coming Back To Life), the hope for a better future (A Great Day For Freedom, Keep Talking) and the bitterness that lingers from their feud with Roger Waters (Poles Apart, Lost For Words). While some might dismiss this as latter day, Roger-less, not-as-classic Pink Floyd, we found that the tunes were better than we remembered and they conjured memories from a simpler and more wondrous time in our lives. And the memories from the lone time The Wolf ever saw Pink Floyd live help us warm to this record as a gem, albeit a dark horse, in the Pink Floyd catalog. I'm In Love With That Song: P.P. Arnold - "Medicated Goo"
You may not know her name, but I guarantee you've heard her voice. When acts as diverse as Graham Nash, Peter Gabriel and KLF are in need of a soulful vocal, PP Arnold has been a top choice. Her voice has graced dozens of songs & albums for over 50 years, though she's never had a hit under her own name in the US. On this episode, we take a brief look at her career and examine a great lost track, featuring Eric Clapton and the Derek & The Dominos band, recorded in 1970 but didn't see the light of day until 47 years later. Ep 560Decibel Geek Podcast - The Best & Worst of Warrant - Ep563
EWe're back this week to discuss a band that experienced highs, lows, and tragedy throughout their career as we pick The Best & Worst of Warrant. Warrant, formed in Hollywood in 1984, would go through changes in their early years that would lead to recruiting then-Plain Jane members Jani Lane and Steven Sweet into the band. A false start under Prince, a soundtrack appearance, and touring would result in the band getting signed to Columbia Records. 1989's 'Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich' would spawn several hit singles including 'Down Boys,' 'Big Talk,' and 'Heaven' with the latter hitting #2 on Billboard. The doors would blow wide open with the release of 1990's 'Cherry Pie,' a song that was a blessing and a curse to the band. Controversy would also follow the band on their first two albums with British guitarist Mike Slamer being rumored to handle all guitar parts in the studio. 1992 would see musical tides shifting amid the release of 'Dog Eat Dog,' a tougher album produced by Michael Wagener. Things would stranger and more experimental with the band's 1995 and 1996 releases, 'Ultraphobic' and 'Belly to Belly' respectively. The band would flame out and briefly reunite before shifting singers twice more. Lead singer Jani Lane would tragically pass away to alcohol poisoning in 2011. We cover the Jani Lane lane era of Warrant this week and discuss those albums as well as the new tracks on Greatest & Latest (1999) and Under the Influence (2001) while picking what we deem to be the best and worst track off each. There's a lot to cover on and off the stage with this band and we think you'll enjoy our discussion. Let us know what your Best & Worst of Warrant is in the comments!
