Famous & Gravy: The Masterclass Act (Philip Seymour Hoffman)

His mother was a former family court judge, and his father worked for the Xerox corporation. The New York Times once said “He does terminal uncertainty better than practically anyone.” He was a sleepy-looking man with uncombed hair who favored rumpled clothes. He was perhaps the most ambitious and widely admired American actor of his generation. He earned Oscar nominations for his performances in “The Master”, “Doubt”, and “Charlie Wilson’s War”, and won as Best Actor for “Capote” in 2005. Today’s dead celebrity is Philip Seymour Hoffman. Famous & Gravy is created and co-hosted by Amit Kapoor and Michael Osborne. This episode features Michael Warburton as guest host, and was produced by Megan Palmer. Imbalanced History: Profiles In The Blues: Bessie & The Wolf - REDUX

E

This is a re-release of our #ProfilesInTheBlues episode, Bessie & The Wolf! Originally released 9/27/21: "Profiles In The Blues is a new umbrella concept on the podcast! In the initial episode, the Imbalanced Brothers delve deeper into the subjects of Bessie Smith, The Empress Of The Blues, (who's been mentioned before), and Chester Burnett's alter ego, Howlin' Wolf! Both were amazing forces of musical nature in their own unique way! These two under-appreciated American artists are part of the legacy that this podcast was founded to spotlight. While there will be many more episodes in this area, we invite you to enjoy this episode, and then dig back for our stories, and three episodes, about Robert Johnson, if you find the time! Only Three Lads: Top 5 Sample Based Albums (with forceghost)

E

When most people hear the phrase "sampling" in music, their minds usually go to one place: hip hop. Some may even still hold onto misguided preconceptions that sampling is blatant thievery perpetrated by talentless hacks who can't come up with their own original music. Well, friends, we're here to set the record straight... because we celebrate the art of sampling in all of its different forms with this week's Third Lads, forceghost (Eric Kinlaw and Marcus Barfield). From the experimental composers who borrowed bits of familiar pieces and manipulated them into something daring and new, to the hip hop trailblazers who skillfully transformed stacks of dusty records into an essential part of their street poetry, to the electronic pioneers who utilized cutting edge technology to open up unimaginable worlds, sampling has indelibly and undeniably impacted the music we love. About forceghost: Eric Kinlaw (Vocals/Guitar/Bass/Sound Design) and Marcus Barfield (Production/Sound Design) are forceghost, an electronic psych duo based out of Augusta, GA. Both members sport a long list of previous bands and projects, but are elated to be bringing forceghost into its fullest realization. After their initial formation in 2019, time and circumstance have led to the reshaping of the band into its current form. forceghost is the product of impromptu jam sessions, free form experimentation, and friendship. Many years of musical evolution and collaboration between the duo have culminated into a sound both piercingly focused, and kaleidoscopic in scope and texture. Creamy guitars, soaring synths, sharp drums, and hauntingly beautiful vocals will leave the listener enveloped in a radiant afterglow. All previous recordings have fallen by the wayside. This is the definitive starting point for forceghost. With the release of their debut EP, unknowing the known, the band hopes listeners find themselves enriched by their listening. Come apart and put yourself back together with forceghost. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Colin Hay Live Review

E

As children of the MTV generation, The Wolf & Action Jackson grew up listening to and watching videos from Men At Work. The band from Down Under had some big hits and their first two albums, Business As Usual & Cargo, sold more than 20 million copies around the world. However, the quickly disappeared from the scene and it left us wondering where they went. In 2015, a documentary about their frontman and lead songwriter Colin Hay emerged, Waiting For My Real Life, which told the story of the rise and fall of the band but also delved into Colin's struggle with alcohol, relocation to LA and finding redemption as an acoustic storyteller. Upon seeing this documentary, The Wolf desperately wanted a chance to see this troubadour live where Colin regales his fans with stories, keeps them laughing and delivers both Men At Work classics and personal tunes from his solo catalog. The Wolf shares with Jackson Colin's stories on Paul McCartney inviting himself to dinner at Colin's house, overcoming alcoholism, moving from Scotland to Australia, losing friends & loved ones and using those moments to weave funny and heartfelt stories. Hear which of his classic songs he mistakenly sang the second verse twice on (the crowd loved it!) and get to know some of his beautiful, personal solo songs with which you might be less familiar. It was a great night out - don't miss him if you have the chance to see him play! www.colinhay.com Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Ugly American Werewolf in London Store - Get your Wolf merch and use code 10OFF2023 to save 10%! Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast - EP 106 - Album Retrospective: The Hassles First Album

Before Billy Joel was a household name, and before he was even a solo recording artist or known as a piano player, he released his first album on United Artists Records in 1967. That album was The Hassles, by the band of the same name. Billy, still a teenager, wasn’t in the spotlight. Rather, he was the organ player who contributed a few original songs and vocals. For this album episode, we’re reviewing the deluxe re-release from 1992. It contains the entire first album, plus 8 additional bonus tracks of b-sides, demos and alternate takes. This generous serving of blue-eyed-soul and Long Island rock and roll provides Billy’s first step into the music industry at large. And, it reveals a few germs of the melodic instincts, arrangement styles, and vocal prowess that Billy would cultivate into his signature sound just a few years later. Join us as we dig deep into The Hassles’ self-titled debut album. ------ Email us: [email protected] Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Glass Houses Media, LLC Learn more about your ad choices. First Concert Memories #9: Rainbow with Amanda Lehmann

Here on First Concert Memories, the monthly sidecast from your friends at The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, we endeavor to bring you stories from guests about the first time they saw a particular band and how that impacted their life. For FCM 9, we're joined by dear friend of the show Amanda Lehmann as she relates going to see Rainbow in 1980 as she was still a wee lass. Amanda has grown up to be an extraordinary singer and guitar player and you have to know that seeing a legend like Ritchie Blackmore when she was just 12 had a profound effect on her musical journey and career. We've hosted her on the show before (Eps 61 & 70) and seen her play live with Steve Hackett in the UK and so enjoyed hearing her tell the tale of this important night in her young life. Not only do we dive into the live performance by a star-studded band (Ritchie on guitar, Roger Glover on bass, Cozey Powell on drums, Don Airey on keys, Graham Bonnet on vocals) but we talk about her journey on the train, through town and up to the front of the stage to see her heroes in action. Hear Amanda talk about seeing Graham Bonnet with short hair, a Hawaiian shirt and shades and about returning to that same venue to play with Steve Hackett on his recent live release decades later. It's a full circle journey with Amanda Lehmann, one that we think you'll enjoy as much as we did. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Diary Of A Madman"

E

On the 51st Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest Zach Throne from Corey Taylor's band and Bruce Kulick's band, review the 1981 legendary album from Ozzy Osbourne "Diary Of A Madman" Ozzy was one year removed from his incredible debut, Blizzard Of Ozz when he went back into the studio for his second solo studio album, Diary Of A Madman. Returning with Ozzy was the young guitar God, Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley on bass and Lee Kerslake on drums. This lineup will only have two albums under their belt, but perhaps the two greatest hard rock albums back to back. Diary Of A Madman may have topped his debut album. Randy Rhoads groundbreaking guitar playing went to an even higher level. Bob Daisley's bass playing and incredible lyrics added to the growing mystique and image of Ozzy Osbourne. Lee Kerslake's drumming excellence is on full display on the beginning of the opening track, "Over The Mountain." Ozzy's vocals and delivery is at its peak throughout this album. His underrated and underappreciated singing was some of his best work ever. The album was one again produced by Max Norman, but along with Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads and Bob Daisley. The album went 3X platinum in the United States and made it to #16 on the US Billboard 200. It produced some of classic rock's greatest hits including "Flying High Again." The album is sadly the last album by this incredible unit and obviously Randy Rhoads last album ever. He passed away in a terrible plane crash during the Diary Of A Madman tour. A tragedy that robbed the world of one of the greatest guitar hero and by ALL accounts a beautiful human being. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 49 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the Patreon family member's pick. So tune in to see who was Flying High Again and who was a Madman with their picks! Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- The Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection

E

Get ready to step into the ring as we explore the electrifying tag team of professional wrestling and rock and roll in this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll. We’re going to take a look at the iconic rock and wrestling era of the late 80s, when the WWF superstars climbed out of the ring and picked up the mic to record TWO albums of them singing: 1985’s The Wrestling Album and 1987s Piledriver: The Wrestling Album II. And we’re going to talk about how Cyndi Lauper helped bring wrestling into the mainstream. Then we’re going to check out some iconic entrance music from wrestling history, and listen to some other albums that wrestlers have put out over the years. We’ve also got some weird stuff. Junk Yard Dog singing on American Bandstand. The Mouth of the South Jimmy Hart’s top 10 hit in the 60s with a song you probably know, and Mean Gene Okerlund’s rockabilly album of the 50s. Only Three Lads: Top 5 Double Albums (with Is/Ought Gap)

E

It's double trouble this week! Poof...just like a Criss Angel routine, we've magically got double the lads, double the laughs, double the fun...and double the vinyl! Yep, that's right, during this episode, we talk about double albums with our special guests Bryan Cook and Tom Cheek from Is/Ought Gap. More than just an album spread across two slabs of wax, symbolically the double album is an opportunity for artists to use the recording medium as a grand, bold artistic statement, a blank canvas for experimentation, stretching out, and crafting a long form musical narrative. When executed well, double albums can be beautiful, messy, ambitious, kaleidoscopic masterpieces. Is/Ought Gap was formed in Athens, Georgia by Bryan Cook (Time Toy, Club Gaga, Hindu Love Gods) and Tom Cheek (Kilkenny Cats) in the early '80s while attending the University of Georgia. Athens, as you well know, was already the musical hotbed of the south, with The B-52's, R.E.M., Pylon, Oh-OK, and other legends, and while those bands certainly informed the sound of Is/Ought Gap, they were also a bit looser and noisier. Despite being live favorites and recording a never officially released album in 1984, Lucky 7, Is/Ought Gap's original run was relatively short and the band members went on to other endeavors. It's now time to reclaim their rightful place in Athens music history with the release of the compilation album SUA, out on April 5th from HHBTM Records. SUA collects tracks from Lucky 7 along with songs that were demoed back in the day but recorded until 2014 and some vintage live tracks. The stage is set for a grand return, a celebration of sonic resurrection, as Is/Ought Gap weaves their enigmatic melodies once more into the tapestry of Athens, live and in person! Ugly American Werewolf in London: Rush - Grace Under Pressure

E

Rush can be a very polarizing band. Even for those who "get it" there are eras that some fans disown or are slow to warm to. The 80s for Rush may be the most divisive period as everyone's favorite remaining power trio had seemed to turn in their heavy metal and progressive roots for synthesizers and shorter, more radio friendly tunes. After swaying perhaps too far into the techno-lands with 1982's Signals, Rush came back to self-produce (with a little help) 1984's Grace Under Pressure in order to establish a more evenly distributed sound. And without any big singles on the record, it still managed to go platinum in the US and their home country of Canada. You'll hear the hallmarks of Rush throughout the album - the soaring vocals and furious bass work of Geddy Lee, the big riffs and blistering solos of Alex Lifeson and baterista brilliance from The Professor Neil Peart. But it's Peart's lyrics which go way beyond standard pop or rock storytelling as he wades into topics like nuclear war, life & death, freedom & fear, all set against the backdrop of The Cold War. Incorporating synths may take some of the heavy out of the sound but the lyrics deliver in an outsized way and offer more proggy accents than even their 1970s heyday. And The Wolf even gets a little emotional talking about the final track, Between The Wheels, as one of his favorites from the time he first heard it live almost 30 years ago. If you like Rush and don't know this one or dismissed it long ago, we hope you'll listen with fresh ears because the music is inspired and the lyrics are as relevant today as ever. Ep 114See Hear Podcast Episode 114 - Cassette: A Documentary Mixtape

There's a song performed by Peter Allen that seems to be more relevant than ever: Everything Old Is New Again. Film plots are recycled, songs are recycled (through covers or the same chord structures).....and the media we use to play those films and songs are back in fashion. Records have been popular again for a while, some people are rediscovering VHS, and as this month's film focus shows us, the Compact Cassette is the new medium of choice for music recording and listening. Welcome to Episode 114 of See Hear Podcast. In 2016, Zack Taylor released a film called “Cassette: A Documentary Mixtape” which looks at the humble invention which meant so much to those of us who grew up with the tape as a dominant medium for music listening (and recording music and audio letters and.....) The film features a new generation who were probably not born or at least cognisant of the tape singing its praises. Importantly, the director also sought out Lou Ottens and his colleagues who invented the compact cassette in the early 60s. While proud of their achievements, Ottens is somewhat puzzled that the cassette appeals so much to a new generation – he truly believes (as inventors do) that the cassette's time is done and the next thing should be focused on. False nostalgia? A genuine appeal to new eyes? The film gently explores all these things. The fans, the inventors, the musicians only releasing their music on cassette.....they're all here. Tim, Kerry and myself are joined by Mike White of The Projection Booth to talk as much about our own experiences and thoughts on tapes as well as the film. Give it a listen, then gather your friends together to reminisce (if you're of that age) about your own mixtapes, the times you became cassette surgeons, and how much you miss your old Walkmans. The film is available for you to watch on Tubi or on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmClZ7SMfBo Mike has a number of shows running under the banner of the Weirding Way Media network, but the flagship is The Projection Booth, essential listening for film fans of any type of cinema – tentpole, arthouse, Sci-fi, Czech, theme months, early cinema, obscure, mainstream.....all discussed with people passionate about films. It's a favourite of ours at See Hear. On your favourite podcast app or at the website: https://www.projectionboothpodcast.com/ If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists.
