Ugly American Werewolf in London: Simple Minds Mel Gaynor Interview

Mel Gaynor is well respected around the world for his talents as a drummer. Besides being on the skins for Simple Minds as they took off to global superstardom, he has worked with legends like Elton John, Tina Turner, Lou Reed, Jackson Browne, Robert Palmer, Meat Loaf and many more. But Mel can do more than keep the beat and he's releasing his first solo album, Come With Me (out May 3rd), which showcases his songwriting & arranging talents as well as his strong, masculine vocals. Mel shows his range between folk songs (Run, the 1st single out now), funk (Dangerous), country (Still Waters) and rock (Keep On Believing) while also delivering poignant versions of Wicked Game and his buddy Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love (which features Robert's vocals). Mel gives us his background growing up in London during the 60s and 70s, how he got started in the business, working with metal band Samson alongside future Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson and more. Plus, he gives a couple of Simple Minds fans the chance to ask some fanboy questions about making videos, playing at Live Aid and the story behind their #1 hit Don't You Forget About Me. Shout It Out Loudcast: "10,000 Volts"

E

This week Tom & Zeus review the recently released solo album from former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley, "10,000 Volts." Ace Frehley's new album has been hyped and discussed more than any other rock album in memory. Ace has made the rounds (the best being right here on SIOL), been everywhere on social media and has made claims that 10,000 Volts is his best work since his 1978 solo album. With the help of Trixter's Steve Brown and SIOL's very own Hall Of Famer, Joey Cassata, 10,000 Volts has taken the KISS Army & the Ace Cult by storm. This is the 6th album by KISS members outside of KISS that SIOL has reviewed. As usual they rank the songs and then rank the album and covers against the five previous KISS member albums outside of KISS. So did 10,000 Volts live up to the hype? Is this as good as the last three KISS albums? Ace's best work since 1978? A fun drinking game will be take a shot for every Ace impression on this episode. Metal Mayhem ROC: James Durbin talks singing with Judas Priest on American Idol

In this episode, we’re exploring the new James Durbin CD “Screaming Steel”. Durbin is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Santa Cruz, California. Metal heads associate his name with his appearance on Season 10 of American Idol (2011), where appeared with Judas Priest for rousing renditions of "Livin' After Midnight" and "Breaking the Law" and also appeared with legendary guitarist Zakk Wylde. This was followed by Durbin’s debut album, 2011’s “Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster” that blended a mix of hard hitting riffs, vulnerable lyrics, and Durbin’s signature screams. In this interview, James relives his experience sharing the stage with Judas Priest, then takes us on his musical journey post American Idol, leading up to him joining Quiet Riot, then FINALLY releasing his first true heavy metal album “The Beast Awakens” in 2021, 10 years after American Idol. They also discuss James second heavy metal release, the new “Screaming Steel”, just released in 2024. James’s share’s his metal influences are deep in classic heavy metal with the likes of Dio, Sabbath and Iron Maiden. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "Who's Next"

E

On the 50th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest Murph review the 1971 legendary album from the classic rock band The Who "Who's Next." The Who was already one the greatest rock bands of all time in 1971 when they began working on a new project from guitarist Pete Townshend, called "Lifehouse." The band scrapped the plan (with the help from their producer Glyn Johns) and decided to use their best songs for a new rock album. The result was their greatest album and one for the greatest rock albums of all time. The band was in their prime, led by main songwriter, guitarist and music genius Pete Townshend. Roger Daltrey was the prototype lead singer of the time, a good looking, charismatic frontman with incredible vocals. Bassist John Entwistle is considered by many as the greatest bass player of all time. Rounding out the lineup is one of rock music's most iconic character, the insane Keith Moon, who was just as good a drummer as he was a madman. The album was produced by the talented Glyn Johns and The Who. Who's Next boasts some of classic rock's greatest songs, including, Baba O'Riley, Bargain, Behind Blue Eyes and Won't Get Fooled Again. These songs and more are staples on classic rock stations. The album has gone triple platinum in the United States and is constantly on the greatest albums lists. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 48 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was the Zeus' pick. So get in tune and make sure you don't get fooled again by listening to anything other than SIOL! STREAM IT EVERYWHERE In the exciting conclusion of Part 4 of my history of albums, we close out the 1980s. We’ve already seen how quickly music changed in the first half of the decade. In the second half, popular music absorbed more of the underground sound and style, creating an even deeper divide that gave even more power to the industry, and drove indie scenes even deeper underground. And as the megastar machine became more and more top-heavy, the underground was preparing for a takeover that even they didn’t see coming. How do you feel about the second half of the 1980s as compared to the first half? Do you prefer it? Does it sound more ‘80s to you? Can you hear how the divide between the super popular and the indie was setting up a major shift in the next decade? Discuss dammit! Ugly American Werewolf in London: Steve Hackett Interview & Live Concert Review

Steve Hackett is not only a truly talented guitarist and songwriter but he's a bit of a workaholic. He rewards his fans by touring the world every year, releasing new material on a regular basis and live albums from the themed tours he's led. And though he's in the midst of his Foxtrot at 50 Tour (for which he's already released a live album) we're proud to welcome him back to The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast (hear him ahead of the Foxtrot at 50 Tour on UAWIL #87) as he wraps up his final leg of the tour. The Circus and The Nightwhale is his latest release, an autobiographical concept album of his life growing up near Battersea Power Station, forging out into the world of rock music and eventually finding happiness in his life. It's the most prog/concept album he's offered since he was in Genesis and he speaks with us about how he approached this album differently than others. The opening track People of the Smoke stirs memories of growing up in London and sets the tone for a brilliant album full of tapping, tremolos and other tricks at which Steve is so adept. Hear Steve talk about channeling Jeff Beck, using one of Brian May's guitars and why you don't want him playing bass on your album. He's proud that the album has hit #1 on the UK Rock Chart and to be celebrated on the cover of Prog Magazine. In the second part of the episode, The Wolf & Action Jackson travel to Jacksonville, FL to hear Steve debut songs from The Circus and The Nightwhale live, to hear Foxtrot in its entirety and some classic Hackett solo songs as well. It made for a very special night for your intrepid hosts and one very special episode of UAWIL. Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast - EP 105 - Billy Joel Love Songs + Turn The Lights Back On & Grammy Performance

It’s easy to write off the lyrical content of love songs. They’re often fairly simple, and are more emotional than thought-provoking. But a good love song, like any song, reveals something about the writer, and, often, the listener. For our Valentine’s Day episode, we’re discussing our favorite Billy Joel love songs. But, we ended up doing more than discussing the lyrics and music. We also found ourselves reflecting on how the songs we heard in our youth shaped our perspective on relationships. And, how Billy’s perspective gave us insight to our own personal dynamics. Join us as we skim the surface of our own love lives, as we dig deep into our favorite Billy Joel love songs. ------ Email us: [email protected] Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Glass Houses Media, LLC Learn more about your ad choices. Only Three Lads: Top 5 Songs of 1996 (with Author Kyle Wiltshire)

E

This week, we set the way back machine for 1996…with a stop off in 1999, which is the setting for the new book by Kyle Wiltshire and Jay Watson, The Dead Rock Stars. Coincidentally, then, we welcome co-author Kyle Wiltshire as our Third Lad! Kyle is a husband, father, and writer who has seen U2 eleven times. He tries to paint like Bob Ross and enjoys talking about the Star Wars universe on a very deep level. He loves pop culture and prides himself on being able to name the year any movie from the 1980s or '90s was released. P.S. We put him to the test with a brand new O3L game, “B-Movie…or Be Dead!” About The Dead Rock Stars: What if famous rock stars from the past, those who died young, in sudden and tragic ways, actually faked their deaths to become secret agents? Welcome to the world of The Dead Rock Stars, the heroes we never knew we had. The Dead Rock Stars is a tale about Cole Denton, a young tech genius who discovers the secret world of rock star secret agents. He is tasked with saving the world from an unknown threat—one that’s closer to home than either Elvis Presley or the team can imagine. But can they beat the clock before it strikes midnight on December 31, 1999? In a twisting and nostalgic story, The Dead Rock Stars is an alternate history, placed squarely in the realm of real-world events, that happened without anyone knowing. Brimming with pop culture references for music lovers of every generation, the novel’s fast and hilarious plot will keep readers guessing at every turn. Learn more about your ad choices. Pop FEATURED SONG: Business of Ferrets – “Komputers & Kognac” (feat. Nick DeMatteo & Pete Braidis, from IT WASN’T ME !) STREAM IT EVERYWHERE In Part 4 of my history of albums, we’ve made it to the 1980s. The 1980s are considered a big decade for singles, so we often forget that some of the greatest and biggest selling albums were released then. I talk about those albums, as well as lesser known notable albums, and how technology influenced their crafting. As synths and recording became more and more affordable, artists were able to take more control over how an album was produced and crafted. This created the first true underground scenes, and split music and album development between the big stars of the industry pop machine and smaller artists of the indie label scenes. NOTE: Because I know more about the 1980s than previous decades, I’m splitting this episode into two parts. This week’s episode will go to 1985. What are your favorite albums from the first half of the 1980s? Do you think these albums hold up to the greats from other decades? How do you feel about 1980s production values in comparison to the 1970s and 1990s? When you think of the 1980s, do you identify more with the first or second half of the decade? Discuss dammit! Game Changers, in the eyes of the Imbalanced Brothers, are the albums, people, events, and things that changed the game, the music business, or how we view the whole damn thing! Nothing happens in a vacuum, and the rise and trajectory of Van Halen is no different. They had great managers, and label people guiding them on their way, and a major early supporter in Gene Simmons! Friends and family, and especially fans, showed them that their loud, boisterous music, and Dave's outlandish antics, were right on time for 1978! First Concert Memories #8: Blues Traveler post 9/11 in NYC with Brian of My Weekly Mixtape

E

We at The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast created our monthly sidecast, First Concert Memories, to give people a chance to share their passion for live music and how one particular rock show had a big impact on their life. FCM #8 is a glowing example of how a rock n roll show can regenerate and restore your passion for life after dark times. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Brian Colburn, a radio & podcast professional and host of My Weekly Mixtape, was commuting into New York City from New Jersey. While entering the LIncoln Tunnel, passengers were told that a plane had struck one of the World Trade Center towers and they would be rerouted back to their origin point. By the time they were back in New Jersey, both towers had crumbled. Like everyone in greater NYC, around the country and the world, Brian experienced a range of emotions and it took a long time to process that horror. However, on December 16, 2001, Brian saw that Blues Traveler, a New Jersey band he'd never seen live, were coming to the Roseland Ballroom that night. He called his buddies and within a couple of hours they were at the show. Hear Brian describe the feeling in the crowd as people tried to understand if it was OK to smile again, gather in a crowd and sing and dance to music you love. You'll get goosebumps as he describes John Popper playing the Star-Spangled Banner. You'll smile when you hear about Michael Franti joining Blues Traveler for a Bob Marley classic and Brian's encounter with him in the parking lot. And you'll tear up when you hear about the first responders who were honored on stage that night. This is why we created this podcast and we think you'll love Brian's story. Only Three Lads: Top 5 LA Bands

E

Finally...a podcast episode that captures all of the glitz and glamour of the City of Angels. You'll feel like you're right there on the red carpet with all of your favorite stars. Or something like that. OK, we all know that Los Angeles has a rich musical history, from the '60s heroes lining the Sunset Strip and packing clubs like The Whisky and The Roxy, to sensitive Laurel Canyon singer/songwriters, to the laid back California studio sounds of the mid-'70s, to the debaucherous sleaze of hair metal. But how about the classic alternative bands who kept LA on the musical map during the O3L era? That's our challenge this week. Plus, Uncle Gregg has a chat with Brett's inner demon! A powerful anti-drug message (we think??)! Health trends! Sticking it to big corporations! Hot robots! Meowing! Yeah, it's another late at night recording, which typically means nothing but trouble. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Toto & Journey Live Concert Review

Listeners of the show know that the point of The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast is to keep rock alive by sharing memories of bands, albums, live concerts and artist interviews. But the best way to indoctrinate the next generation away from the ubiquity of Taylor Swift is to take them to non-Taylor live shows. The Wolf Cub developed a love for the Toto classic Africa after The Wolf played it for her a couple of times. As it's become one of her go to songs throughout the years, The Wolf promised his sweet daughter that if the opportunity came to see them live, he would take her. Low and behold, Toto are opening for Journey as they continue to celebrate their more than 50 years in rock on an arena tour that would come to The Wolf Cub's home town. So as a dutiful parent, The Wolf took her and The She-Wolf out for a night of fond rock n roll memories. But who is left in these bands from their heydays? Did they play all the right songs? Which band sounded better? Which of these bands did the family say they'd go see again and which did they say thank you and goodnight after this show? Hear all about it through the eyes of a nine-year-old who has attended some big concerts (Rolling Stones, Duran Duran, KISS 3x, Chicago, America, Peter Frampton) and from the more seasoned perspective of her doting father.
