In April 2020, a task force was created to plan a memorial for Neil Peart in a place familiar to all Rush fans, Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie, St. Catharine's, Ontario. Two years later, this week's guest, sculptor Morgan MacDonald, was chosen to create the bronze statues that will honor the late drummer. Morgan tells us about the constant presence of Rush in his life, the Rush Easter eggs hidden within the sculpture, and the enormity of the work ahead of him. His dry delivery piqued the interest of Tom Smothers, who offered him a job in the late 1960s as a writer on the “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.” He was roommates with Steve Martin for a number of years, and his younger brother is the renowned comedian and filmmaker Albert Brooks. His most famous and long-lived character was a witless, deadpan parody of bravado-fueled stuntmen like Evel Knievel. Recently, he starred as Marty Funkhouser on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Today’s dead celebrity is Bob Einstein. This episode originally published December 14, 2022. Though AC/DC are one of the most revered and successful bands in the history of rock n roll, in 1979 they hadn't cracked the Top 100 in the US. The killer riffs laid down by Malcolm Young had gained them a strong following in Europe and their native Australia but they had yet to breach the great big U-S-of-A. So in 1979 they brought in a new producer, Robert John "Mutt" Lange to give them an edge. And though they were all skeptical after giving Eddie Kramer a shot, once Mutt showed them he knew how to sing, how to get the most out of Angus's guitar and how to put together songs, they were all on board. However, though this would be their big breakthrough in America with Highway To Hell reaching the Top 20, the celebration wouldn't last as lead singer and primary antagonist Bon Scott would soon die while living that rock n roll life. But before he left he gave us some of his patented sexual innuendo (Walk All Over You, Love Hungry Man, Touch Too Much) and his description of his lifestyle in the title track. Cliff Williams had settled in on the bass after Powerage and the live album If You Want Blood You Got It and Angus Young came of age with the help of Mutt Lange in the studio. The result is some of their greatest riffs (Highway To Hell, If You Want Blood (You've Got It), fan favorites (Girls Got Rhythm, Shot Down In Flames) and controversy (Nightprowler). It marked the end of an era with Bon Scott but the start of working with Mutt Lange who would help their next album become the 2nd biggest selling album of all time. This week Tom & Zeus review the 1994 KISS tribute album, "KISS My Ass Classic KISS Regrooved." To coincide with KISS' 20th Anniversary, the band decided to organize a tribute album featuring today's hottest rock acts. Artists like Lenny Kravitz, Anthrax, Gin Blossoms and more interpreted classic KISS songs. KISS was even able to get the biggest act of the 1990's Garth Brooks to perform "Hard Luck Woman." Some artist were pretty straight forward with their covers, while others took big chances, like Toad The Wet Sprocket on "Rock And Roll All Nite", The Mighty Mighty Bosstones on "Detroit Rock City" and a supergroup made up of Tool, Rage Against The Machine and Faith No More called Shandi's Addiction with their version of "Calling Dr. Love." The guys breakdown the track selection and rank the songs and treat this like a compilation album, so they then rank the compilation album and cover versus the previous reviewed compilation albums. The Wolfhounds are an English noise pop band formed in Romford, Essex, in 1985 by Dave Callahan, Paul Clark, Andy Golding, Andy Bolton and Frank Stebbing, and originally active until 1990. The band reformed in 2005 and continues to write, record and play live, releasing new albums in 2014, 2016, and 2020. (Thanks, Wikipedia.) Cynthia Ross is a musician, writer, poet and spoken word performer. Better known as her stage name Cynthia B-Girl, she’s a punk rock pioneer and one of the earliest of proponents of the underground scene in Toronto, Canada. In 1977, Cynthia and B-Girls singer Lucasta met at post-concert afterparty, and soon after formed The B-Girls. Like several bands in those days, The B-Girls basically learned to play onstage. Soon they were traveling back and forth to New York City, for monthly shows atCBGB; They opened for Blondie, toured with The Clash and were huge in Japan. I could write a lengthy blurb for this episode of the show as I normally do, or I could just say, “Ladies and gentlemen, I present my interview with Richard Thompson”......what's that? You need more? Okay. Welcome to episode 176 of Love That Album. If you've listened to early episodes of the show or hung around the Facebook group for the podcast or know me in real life, you'd know that Richard Thompson looms large in my love of popular song. He's always been a triple threat: one of the greatest guitarists (acoustic AND electric) in contemporary music. He has a wonderfully expressive singing voice (a point not acknowledged as much as it deserves). Then.....the man has a gift with writing stories – not for books or films, but for songs. The thing is he paces his tales like an author or scriptwriter would, and that's what sets him apart from his peers. There are dark songs about lack of hope. There's songs of an unhealthy obsession with Elvis. Songs of self deprecation, survivor's guilt, and refusing to be shackled to society's rules also exist in his songbook. Is that too dark? Okay then, there's also songs of Egyptian mummies, Kenny G, and celebrating a great night out....and yes, there's songs of love including THAT song about two lovers and a motorcycle. In case you get the impression it's all about his lyricism, there's a strong gift of melody abundant in his catalogue. This year, Richard turned 75 and celebrates with his umpteenth new album, the excellent Ship To Shore. We discuss his new rekkid, some past favourite songs of mine (cos why wouldn't I?), his guitars, Margaret Thatcher, his parents' generation that went through World War 2, and character assassination (ummm....via song, not actual assassination). The Wolf & Action Jackson are HUGE Rolling Stones fans and count seeing the Steel Wheels Tour live in their respective cities as an important moment in their lives. Though the Stones never said it, many figured the Steel Wheels Tour would be the last chance for many people to ever see the Stones play. And because Bill Wyman retired after that tour, one could argue that definitely signaled the end of an era. Fast forward 5 years later and our hosts are in college, had been roommates, and went crazy for Keith Richards 1992 solo effort Main Offender. When the Stone s announced they'd signed a new $44 million deal with Virgin and would be putting out a new album with Darryl Jones on the bass, the boys were psyched. Not only would that mean some new Keith songs to hear on the album but that there would be a new tour - another chance to see the Stones live! This made for a special time in the boys lives and we've chosen to review this album to remember those heady days. However, even at the time the boys didn't love Voodoo Lounge. Producer Don Was tried to play up some funky grooves and call backs to their heyday but the end result was long (over an hour) and a disappointment outside of the songs Keith Richards sang. Still, our heroes go track x track here to unveil what was happening in Stones World at the time, which songs are worth keeping, which songs would have made better b-sides and what they loved about the tour.
