On May 24, 1974, the world were introduced to new "supergroup" on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song record label with the self-titled debut of Bad Company. Sporting a world-class lineup of Paul Rodgers (Free) on vocals, Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople) on guitar, Boz Burrell (King Crimson) on bass and Simon Kirke (Free) on drums, Bad Company were seasoned veterans of the studio and the road. After becoming disenchanted with their previous bands, the guys got together to form a straight ahead hard rock act that was built for American rock radio and to play live. And while the record went gold in their home of the UK, Bad Company (1974) is 5x platinum in the US. Paul Rodgers provides can go from singing with raw power on Rock Steady to the sweet Seagull to the soulful lament in Ready For Your Love. Ralphs big guitar riffs would help define what 70s hard rock was and the rhythm section of Burrell and Kirke were steady and creative. Though only two songs were released as official singles (Can't Get Enough & Movin' On), US rock radio fans have become familiar with the entire album thanks to DJs digging into this record for half a century. This week Tom & Zeus review the 1997 grunge influenced KISS album, "Carnival Of Souls: The Final Sessions" This was KISS' 17th studio album and the 22nd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Carnival Of Souls is a very polarizing KISS album. The album was recorded with the Revenge era KISS lineup right before the KISS Reunion. However, it was not released immediately. Bootleg copies of the album were wildly circulated and the band then decided to release the album on October 28, 1997. The band did not promote the album, nor tour on the album. It also was deemed to be KISS trying to be grunge. The album was produced by Alice In Chains producer, Toby Wright. The songs were dark and heavy with a lot of grunge like qualities. This may have suited the Revenge era KISS, especially Gene Simmons, but not Paul Stanley. This ended up becoming the last non-makeup KISS album and the last album with Bruce Kulick as well. This is the only album to feature Bruce Kulick on lead vocals on a KISS song, the last track on the album, "I Walk Alone." As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. Her latest book, ‘I Keep My Visions To Myself’, just came out from With an X Books. Kirsti MacKenzie is the author of ‘Better to Beg’, as well as editor in chief of ‘Major 7th Magazine’. Her work has been published in ‘HAD’, ‘Rejection Letters’, ‘trampset’, ‘Autofocus’, ‘Maudlin House’, ‘Identity Theory’, and elsewhere. Claire Hopple is the author of six books and the fiction editor at XRAY. Her stories have appeared in ‘Wigleaf’, ‘Vol. 1 Brooklyn’, ‘Forever Mag’, and others. She grew up in the woods of Pennsylvania and currently lives in Asheville, NC. Her next book, ‘Take it Personally’, is forthcoming from Stalking Horse Press in February 2025. This person died in 2021, age 61. His brother Neil once told a reporter that he almost joined the newspaper business as a young man, but that he had deliberately botched an interview. By 1984, he spent four months opening for the comedian Sam Kinison. His sense of humor sometimes got him in hot water. A 2018 article about him said “The dedicated fan will identify two patterns in his television work: It is invariably funny, and it is invariably canceled.” He became familiar to millions as the Weekend Update anchor on “Saturday Night Live” from 1994 to 1998. The Moscow Music Peace Festival was a two-day rock concert held in August 1989. Held during Mikhail Gorbachev’s period of Glastnost, Russia allowed a handful of western rock and roll acts to perform for the first time in Moscow, and over 100,000 people living in Cold War Soviet Union packed into Central Lenin Station to witness the forbidden fruit of late 80s rock and roll in all of its excess. Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, and the Scorpions shared the stage with some Russian rock and roll acts to promote peace and raise awareness about drug and alcohol addiction….Because Ozzy and Motley Crue are just the people you want promoting the virtues of sobriety. But the Moscow Music Peace Festival was also an important cultural moment near the end of the Cold War. By the end of the show, stoic Soviet soldiers were throwing their hats in the air and rocking out to the music. The event also inspired the Scorpions to write their hit song Wind of Change, which became an anthem for the end of the Cold War as the Berlin Wall came down just a few months later. We developed our On First Listen series so we'd have the opportunity to give a good listen to albums which had somehow gotten past us. Maybe we'd always seen it in the record store and were curious or maybe friends had recommended the album but we never had a chance to listen. Perhaps, like Roger Waters 1984 solo effort The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking, it was both as the distinct cover is a young boys record shopping fantasy and many prog-heads have suggested it's better than The Wall from Roger's former band Pink Floyd. In fact, he brought both concepts to the band in the late 70s - they could pick the one they liked best and the other, Roger would keep for a solo album. While The Wall became a cultural touchstone selling tens of millions of copies around the world, The Pros & Cons was met with a much cooler reception. And while Roger employed the talents of folks who had helped make Pink Floyd's The Wall such a success like artist Gerald Scarfe, he also brought in some preeminent musicians like David Sanborn, Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton. Telling a story in real time of a man dreaming about having an affair, the ambition of Roger Waters for the stage and screen of his idea is epic. However, despite all this help the album didn't sell like a PInk Floyd album and many critics and fans savaged the album as Roger's negative ego trip. Yet some say it's his finest work, in or out of Floyd. To help give us some insight, we brought back friend of the show Lee Dickson who was Eric Clapton's longtime guitar tech. Though his memory is a bit foggy, the stories of how the stage was setup and how the musicians performed this music on-stage are really special and we're so glad to have him back. Back in 1980, I recall going to the cinema to see a new film, The Blues Brothers. Music and car chases…..what wasn’t there to love? The critics hated it because….ya know….that’s what they’re paid to do. A few years after initial release, it became THAT cult film that everyone watched – on TV, on video or at late night cinema screenings (in Melbourne, it became an audience participation phenomenon similar to Rocky Horror). The question is how did the film get made? Welcome to episode 115 of See Hear Podcast. Kerry, Tim and I welcomed to the show journalist and author Daniel De Vise. He’s written a great new book called “The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic”. As the title implies, it’s not just about the making of the film (although a large part of it is devoted to that subject). Daniel did extensive research to talk about the early lives and characters of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. They were a part of the new North American comedy movement Second City, National Lampoon and Saturday Night (later Saturday Night Live), so he writes much about those institutions. There’s talk in the book about Aykroyd’s love of blues and how he (and Robert Cray’s harmonica player) made Belushi a blues fanatic. There’s stories of 70s cinema, addiction, egos, friendship, men in bee costumes, and origin of The Blues Brothers. We were rapt that Daniel came on the show to talk about his book and about the blues, the accusations of racism thrown against the comedians who wanted to bring brilliant blues and soul musicians back to the spotlight, the comedy movement as the new rockstar, how rock musicians started taking themselves too seriously…..and a TON of other things. Yeah, we even talk about The Blues Brothers movie. The environment that led to the film is hugely important and it would be impossible to talk about it without telling the wider story as to how the film got made.
