Ep 113See Hear Podcast Episode 113 - Interview with Denny Tedesco, director of Immediate Family and The Wrecking Crew
Back at episode 110 of See Hear, Tim, Kerry and I had a round table discussion (Broadway Danny Rose style) about Denny Tedesco's 2015 documentary, The Wrecking Crew. That film was about the session musicians of the 1960s LA scene that made the “name” performers sound great. These session musicians were not known by name outside of that community until their achievements were lauded decades later. What happens in the 1970s when the next generation of LA musicians want to have the ability to play with lot of different artists AND have the joy of being part of a BAND rather than just being part of a pool? You get Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel and Russ Kunkel rewriting the rules. Welcome to episode 113 of See Hear Podcast. Unlike the members of the Wrecking Crew who were originally trained as jazz musicians, and fell into rock and roll to earn a living, the new generation of musicians had grown with rock and roll, loved The Beatles, and wanted to play with songwriters that they admired – as well as contribute to their arrangements. They had the best of both worlds – freedom to play with different people, but still feel part of a gang. Director Denny Tedesco has created a wonderful follow-up to his Wrecking Crew film with the new doc, Immediate Family. For the last few years, they've been playing as a band under that name, but for years, they were playing (together and separately) for hundreds of songwriters / performers including James Taylor, John Prine, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Linda Ronstadt, Gene Clark, Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Phil Collins, and many many more. Their “employers” were also their friends who valued these gents' creative input, not just the ability to knock off a song under tight record company and studio requirements. Once again, Denny has produced an absorbing film about a side of rock history not usually discussed outside of musician circles. As well as chatting about Immediate Family, we of course go back to The Wrecking Crew documentary, and Denny's relationship with his dad, legendary guitarist, Tommy Tedesco. If you want to find out details of where to stream the film or see a theatrical screening, go to https://immediatefamilyfilm.com/ Sadly, it would appear that it's only streaming in the US at the moment, but check for updates on the website or https://www.facebook.com/immediatefamilyfilm. Imbalanced History: Drums & Demons with author Joel Selvin
EJim Gordon was a kid who loved to play drums. Where would that love take him? Basically, everywhere! His inventive, musical percussion style created an incredible demand for his services. Having Jim on drums could change the fate of a recording project, and often did! The success and impact of Gordon's playing was legendary, long before the June 1983 murder of his mother, Osa. The voices "won" following a long, arduous struggle with his mental health. The voices in Jim's head led to a series of heinous actions, leading to murder and prison, after a decade of trying to get help for his then-undiagnosed mental illness. Author Joel Selvin (Altamont: The Rolling Stones, Hollywood Eden, Summer Of Love) visits The Imbalanced Boys to discuss his forthcoming book: Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey Of Jim Gordon, out February 27th through Diversion Books! While the music plays a huge part in this episode, the discussion centers around Jim's story, his illness and its effects on the lives around him. Listen, sure! But be sure to read Joel's new book when it hits at the end of February! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Simple Minds - Sparkle in the Rain
On UAWIL, we regularly talk about albums and bands that are big on one side of the Atlantic but for some reason never have great success on the other side of the pond. One glaring example is Simple Minds who have dozens of hits and many gold & platinum albums in the UK, Europe and around the world but never had huge success in the US. Most US fans know Don't You Forget About Me from The Breakfast Club soundtrack as it went to #1 in the US in early 1985. But because that song wasn't on a Simple Minds album until the 90s and because prior to that they received little to no airplay in the US, many fans see them as a one hit wonder and don't realize the extraordinary career Simple Minds have had with over 60 million records sold worldwide. As it turns 40 on February 6, 1984, Sparkle in the Rain was a bit of a transition from the techno pop band of New Gold Dream 81/82/83/84 to a band that were going places. Simple MInds were playing bigger venues, becoming friendly (and competitive) with U2 and wanted to make a bigger sound. They enlisted Steve Lillywhite (after he produced U2's War) to lead them to more radio-friendly, stadium enhancing tunes. In the end, it's a bit of a mixed bag with takes on fame (Up On The Catwalk), war (East at Easter), rebellion (The Kick Inside of Me) and UK chart climbers like Waterfront and Speed Your Love to Me. Vocalist Jim Kerr delivers an amazing performance but sometimes the lyrics are a bit opaque. Charlie Burchill is a brilliant guitarist but you can't always make out what he's doing as Mick MacNeil's keyboards play a prominent role. The addition of Mel Gaynor from London gave them a big boost and the album hit #1 in New Zealand and the UK where it went platinum. But still, the US had limited knowledge of the band until the Breakfast Club hit a year later. So we go track x track to try to understand why the US didn't pick up on this one and if that had something to do with why they never became huge there like they did in Europe. Metal Mayhem ROC :Filmmaker Damian Kolodiy IMMORTAL SOUL: A RIOT TRIBUTE & CONCERT FILM.
On this episode, we’re joined by Damian Kolodiy, Filmmaker & Founder of NYC ROCKS, a reality web series that follows people & bands active in today’s rock & metal scene. Damian, a NYC native currently residing in Germany, is promoting his new YouTube series covering the long history of the legendary NYC hard rock band, Riot: IMMORTAL SOUL: A RIOT TRIBUTE & CONCERT FILM. His 4-part documentary mini-series explores the history and archives of the different eras of the band, spotlighting specific live performances from each era. The film centers around the Keep It True festival (2022) in Germany, where interviews with Riot fans young and old illustrate this passion for the band. “Immortal Soul” also features interviews with longtime Riot members Don Van Stavern and Mike Flyntz, as well as “New York Rock” author/historian Steven Blush and Keep It True Festival founder Oliver Weinsheimer. The final chapter of the series tells the origin story of the current day formation of the band, Riot V, and how they are well suited to carry on the musical legacy of founder Mark Reale for a new generation of fans. In our dialogue with Damian, we learn just how he discovered this underappreciated band decades after their formation, what inspired him to make this film series, & how he set out to what would result in a massive undertaking of a project. Far more than just a chronicle & timeline of the bands career, his unique twist to their story comes to life with the amazing volume of archival content contained in the episodes. With vintage concert footage, 8mm personal film, concert advertisements plus hundreds of never seen before photos obtained from the family & estate of Mark Reale, as the Filmmaker states, “It’s a great story. My goal is so Riot is not forgotten”. Additionally, post-conversation with Damian, we caught up with Rick Ventura, Riot Guitarist from 1979 – 1983 & Founder of current & active band, Riot Act. In this exclusive conversation, we get Rick’s commentary on episodes 1 & 2, as well as his reflections from his time in the band, including some great stories from that era! As Rick tells us, this was a great time in his life & something that continues to motivate him to keep the legacy of Riot alive & well decades later. I'm In Love With That Song: Television - "See No Evil"
Television came out of the CBGB's scene in New York (in fact, they were the first rock band to play the legendary club), but they never fit the "Punk" or "New Wave" label. They were unique, which is why their debut album Marquee Moon sounds timeless, as fresh today as the day it was released in 1977. Fronted by two great guitarists-- the mercurial Richard Lloyd and the enigmatic Tom Verlaine, who also provided unorthodox vocals and most of the songwriting-- Television would influence generations of bands that followed. Though they never achieved commercial success, Marquee Moon regularly appears on virtually every "Greatest Albums Of All Time" list. On this episode, we explore the track that opens the album, "See No Evil". "See No Evil" (Verlaine) Copyright 1977 Double Exposure Music Ltd. ASCAP Learn more about your ad choices. It's Not That Bad - Spawn
In 1997, the Spawn animated series debuted on HBO. It proved that the world was ready for a dark, violent gritty take on the character that graced the pages of the Image Comics series. Also in 1997, Spawn debuted on the big screen. It didn’t fare as well. But fear not, as we prepare to take on the hellish task of proving that Spawn the movie is not that bad. And WHY?? – Part 3: The THREE DECADES of the 1970s FEATURED SONG: The Drop – “Stay With Me” (from It Wasn’t Me !) STREAM IT EVERYWHERE In Part 3 of my history of albums, we get to the big one: the 1970s. If the album can be said to have had a heyday (and I say nay), this is the decade when it happened. Sales rose. Creativity soared. Critics still look at this decade as a peak of the album as art. Many fans do too. I name check some of the big albums – creatively & commercially, and include some personal faves. I talk about how the album developed & expanded, as did genres both popular and underground. I also argue that the 1970s was really three decades in one. What are your favorite albums of the 1970s? Is this your favorite decade for albums, or do you feel it’s overrated? ETo kick off the year, we return to our deep-dive episode format with a look at Dinosaur Jr.'s second record, the massively influential fuzz of You're Living All Over Me. Play That Rock n' Roll: Molly Hatchet, Part One: The Original Lineup (1978 - 1990)
This is Part One of Play That Rock n' Roll's retrospective about the legendary Southern Rock band, Molly Hatchet. In this episode, we cover the early days of the band, their connections to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and how they broke through with "Flirtin' with Disaster". We also discuss why lead singer Danny Joe Brown left for a solo career in the early '80s, how the band carried on without him, what brought them all back together, and how the original lineup of the band closed out the decade. We will discuss the band's rebirth and current status in Part 2. To give further insight into some of the topics covered, I have included clips from conversation with Kerrang! magazine writer Xavier Russell, who covered Molly Hatchet extensively in the early '80s. Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Pretenders - Learning to Crawl
EThe Pretenders broke out of London in 1979 and enjoyed success on both sides of the pond with hits like Brass in Pocket, Talk of the Town and Message of Love. But in 1982 the band were embroiled with problems from guitarist James Honeyman-Scott's deadly overdose to the sacking of bassist Pete Farndon due to drug use to Chrissie's pregnancy with Ray Davies and the dissolution of their relationship. However, Chrissie Hynde (songwriter, lead singer, guitarist) and Martin Chambers (drummer) forged ahead to somehow make what might be their best album in 1984's Learning to Crawl. In 1982, with the help of some pros, they released the single Back on the Chain Gang, a worldwide hit, backed with My City Was Gone which was a radio favorite in the US. After taking some time off to have daughter Natalie Rae Hynde, Chrissie led Chambers, guitarist Robbie McIntosh and bassist Malcolm Foster into the studio to record an album that would go platinum in the US and gold in the UK. From the heartfelt Show Me, to the soulful The Thin Line Between Love And Hate, to the country Thumbelina and the holiday classic 2000 Miles, this album really showcases how Chrissie's talent allows them to explore many genres. Released January 13, 1984, we celebrate Learning to Crawl by The Pretenders as it turns 40!
